You guys, I’m starting off our week (and really, the official start of the Christmas season) by causing more TROUBLE!
It’s with another edition of TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE but this time…it’s all about CHRISTMAS SONGS!
Buckle up. Things are about to get controversial.
If you missed my last post, I shared my Top Five, Bottom Five: THANKSGIVING FOODS and quite honestly, I had friends and family FIRED UP over my opinions. It always amazes me how passionate people I love can get over something like…turkey. 😉
Speaking of fired up, my first Top Five, Bottom Five: MOVIES was…um……how should we put it…highly controversial and very opinionated too.
If you missed either post and want to see which movies I think are underrated and which ones are overrated or which Thanksgiving foods I love and which I think are bland and boring…make sure you read those posts too.
Once again, I came up with my list and then ran it by my husband. I will say as much as we disagree on Thanksgiving foods (polar opposites!), we have an almost identical list here. What? What? Apparently, we’ve rubbed off on each other in this department 😉 . I have listed Andrew’s Top Five, Bottom Five at the bottom of this post for you to see as well.
Who knows? Maybe you and I will be in agreement today too?! #notlikely
Here we go, in reverse order here are my TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE CHRISTMAS SONGS…
5: ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU
I am not ashamed. In fact, should you ever be in my presence when this song comes on, I will happily belt it out with Mariah for you. This song is fun, happy and always puts me in the Christmas spirit. I love Mariah’s version, but I might even love Michael Buble’s more. Either way, I know a lot of you are going to put this song in your bottom five but not me…it’s a keeper.
4: CHRISTMAS (BABY PLEASE COME HOME)
Yessssssss! I don’t care who sings it (but I love The Eagles’ version the best!)…this song is gold and not played enough.
3: THE CHRISTMAS SONG
I mean, of course. Nat King Cole’s version is my very favorite, but I would truly listen to The Chipmunks sing it too. It just oozes Christmas.
2: HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS
Yesssssss! The list is long of the artists I love to hear sing this one, but Ella Fitzgerald, James Taylor, Nat King Cole and Judy Garland’s versions are my absolute favorite! The lyrics, the sentiment…it’s all perfect.
1: MERRY CHRISTMAS, DARLING
And yes. Of course. When I think back to my childhood, no matter the memory or the time of year, I hear Karen Carpenter singing this song. My mom and dad must have played their Christmas album a bazillion times. When we moved to Detroit in 2004, and I spent my first holiday season away from my family, I remember going to Best Buy just to buy this CD. I tell Andrew all the time, I don’t care if I die in June, I want this song played at my funeral.
So, I love those songs the most!
These below…well, these make me change the station as I’m driving down the road.
These songs would be my…
5: WHERE ARE YOU CHRISTMAS
Nope. It’s whiney. I don’t like it. Where are you new radio station is what I think when it comes on in my car.
4: WONDERFUL CHRISTMASTIME
Oh for the love…this song is just long. I do believe it’s like 18 minutes of one sentence being repeated over and over and over again. I’m not even saying I hate that one sentence (and I certainly don’t hate McCartney), but it’s just so long. It’s so long. And so repetitive. And long. It’s a pass for me.
3: GROWN-UP CHRISTMAS LIST
Add Amy Grant singing it and you have me knocking my Starbucks cup over in my console to change the dial. I just cannot stomach this one. Again, nice sentiment…but I groan at it’s arrival to my eardrums.
2: LITTLE DRUMMER BOY
Make it stop. I don’t get this one. I’m all about songs that are about the birth of Jesus (give me O Little Town of Bethlehem, Silent Night, and Away in the Manger ANY DAY of the week), but this one is a big bottom five for me.
1: THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
If any one of you tells me this is your favorite Christmas song, we’re going to need to have a serious talk about why you are so wrong. On the first day of Christmas, I make sure this song is not on any of my playlists.
So, those are mine!
When I asked my hubby what his were, I was pleasantly surprised. What he lacks in Thanksgiving food taste, he makes up for in Christmas songs.
TOP 5
#5: ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU
#4: MERRY CHRISTMAS, DARLING

Ryan C says
I, 100%, absolutely love your BOTTOM 5 list, LOL!!! 😃
Laci Murray says
Mariah Carey and Michael Buble!
Leslie S says
Shay!! You have to listen to The Christmas Can-Can by Straight No Chaser!! Trust me, it’s just so much fun.
Ok. And also, I know it’s on your bottom 5 but trust me – listen to the 12 Days of Christmas also by Straight No Chaser — but grit your teeth thru the beginning and listen to the whole song 😀🌲 It has a great twist if you can get past the traditional part of the song. What a fun song it turns out to be.
Natasha says
I LOVE Straight No Chaser! They are so good!!!
Jacquelyn Jenkins says
YES!!! 12 Days of Christmas by Straight No Chaser is THE BEST!!! The twist is my absolute favorite!
Catherine says
I came here to say this! Twelve Days of Christmas by Straight No Chaser is the bomb!!
Julie says
I love these posts!! And I totally agree with you and Andrew. Two more absolute favorites for me are Ariana Grande’s ‘Santa Tell Me’ (always puts me in a good mood! and Cee Lo’s ‘What Christmas Means to me.’ LOVE those.
Kelly Anthony says
All I Want For Christmas Is You is my number 1! I love Mariah’s version, but I also love love love Vince Vance!!!

But the rest I can stand behind!!!
Leslee says
Same!!! Sorry not sorry
Erika says
Ooooh I want to know t5b5 of modern and classic.
I love John Legends Christmas album!
Lesley McFarland says
Ok I had to look up a few…did not know that was the Christmas Song, and Grown Up Christmas List. Where have I been the past 44 years 🤦🏼♀️. But NSYNC happy holidays😍😍 is my absolute FAV!!
Krista S. Steenbergen says
The only reason I love 12 days of Christmas is the story behind it, in addition to the Straight No Chaser version! So good!!
MelanieL says
Laughing out loud!!!! I’m sorry but Justin Bieber’s Little Drummer Boy will change you. There, I said it. We have his Christmas CD in our old school under the kitchen cabinet CD player 365 days of the year. I am not kidding. I am 42. Have a great day and promise me you will play that song. 🙂
Michelle says
You don’t like Josh Groban’s Little Drummer Boy??????? Hahahahah – it is one of my favorites – probably because of the orchestration but still….so good. My husband LOVES the Carpenter Christmas album. We have it on repeat this time of year.
M says
Have you heard the Carrie Underwood version? Her son sounds cute!
Haley says
I was going to say the same thing – listen to Carrie Underwood’s version and I dare you not to tear up a little and smile at the “pa-wum-pum-pum”s!
Krista says
Judy Garland’s Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas s my absolute number 1 of all time!!
Emily says
Yes yes yes! I will only listen to the Judy version. It is so beautiful and emotional!
K.K. says
SHAY!! I’m 100% with YOU!! For all the same reasons!! 🙂
Meredith says
These are awesome – Merry Christmas Darling is my fave BUT I love Amy Grant’s Christmas Albums!!!!
Jennibell says
So have you seen the 4 King and Country performance of Little Drummer Boy??? It is SO GOOD.
I’ve never thought much about this…this will be a good conversation starter at our next dinner party 🙂
Jill says
It’s by far my favourite version of it but I do agree why would Mary want a drum solo!
Corinne Angold says
I was going to comment this same thing! I never like Little Drummer Boy until I saw For King and Country’s performance of it at the CMA’s and was just soooo moved! Now it’s my #1 : )
Robin says
I prefer Christmas songs that are either classic or about the real reason for the season! Silent Night, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Joy to the World, White Christmas, Silver Bells. (Honorable mentions- All I Want for Christmas and Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree)
Bottom —Christmas Shoes, Hippopotamus for Christmas, Twelve Days, Grandma Got Ran Over, and Marshmallow Christmas.
Beth says
Robin, those bottom 5…you nailed it. I change the station every time.
bebette says
i do believe this is my most favorite post of yours yet. christmas songs are the best, and i can listen to them all year long. i agree with your top 5 – bottom 5 choices, but mine varies slightly because there are so many to choose from.
top 5:
5 – mele kalikimaka – i love the version of the trio of ingrid michaelson, allie moss, and bess rogers. it’s a fun song to sing along to.
4 – (there’s no place like) home for the holidays by perry como – i love this even more now that my girl is in college, and i can’t wait for her to come home.
3 – i’ll be home for christmas (any version) – love the sentiment of the lyrics.
2 – have yourself a merry little christmas (any version) – i love this song so much that i have a whole playlist of it sang by different artists.
1 – merry christmas darling by the carpenters – this song just oozes christmas and makes me happy.
bottom 5: i will immediately change over to the next song if these songs ever came on.
5 – feliz navidad
4 – grown up christmas list
3 – wonderful christmas time – what was paul thinking of when he wrote this song? big blah!!!
2 – grandma got run over by a reindeer – why?
1 – little drummer boy – i don’t get this song so i will pa rum pum pum pum out of here.
by the way, i will belt out mariah carey’s “all i want for christmas is you” with you anytime. 🥰
Jules says
Pretty much my Bottom 5 too.
5. Little Drummer Boy
4. Frank Sinatra’s Jingle Bells – Love me some Sinatra otherwise, but why must we spell out “J I N G L E bells” repeatedly. Can’t take it.
3. Feliz Navidad – Repetitve, annoying. I am all for diversity in music, but we can do better than this song.
2. Grown Up Christmas List – For SO many reason. Beautiful music, concerning lyrics.
1. Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer – For every reason possible. Unnecessary, awful, against the whole Merry vibe.
Emily says
Little drummer boy used to bother me too, but after hearing my neighbor sing it at church, just her and the guitar it touched me so much! I finally got the message of it. Kind of like the widow offering her two mites. Even though it was small, it was her all. Just like the sweet little song of the drummer boy, he gave the best he could to the Lord.
I agree with your other favorites and non favorites! What a fun post. Thanks for sharing!
Barb says
O holy night
Mary,did you know
Silent night
Birthday of a King
Shine Jesus Shine
I saw Mommy kissing Santa Clau
Here comes Santa Claus
Jingle bell rock
Brittany says
OMG, YES. I absolutely abhor The Little Drummer Boy. Like, I actually get enraged when I hear it. Grown Up Christmas list is awful too…
sandi says
Top Five:
1/ O Holy Night
2/ White Christmas
3/ Mary Did You Know
4/ Winter Wonderland
5/ 12 Days of Christmas (Straight No Chaser version ONLY)
Bottom Five:
1/ Santa Baby
2/ I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus
3/ All I want for Christmas is You
4/ Grown up Christmas List
5/ 12 Days of Christmas (every version except Straight No Chaser 🙂
Marian Cadenasso says
I have to disagree with you on Little Drummer Boy, especially the Bob Seger version. Look it up! Merry Christmas!
Jessy Foster-Lee says
My 90s soul loves Let it Snow by Boyz II Men. And I absolutely cannot stand, and grandma got ran over by a reindeer.
Jen C says
I love any religious Christmas songs! That’s what Christmas is about!
I don’t like “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas”…….just no.
Natasha says
But have you tried Bob & Doug McKenzie’s 12 Days Of Christmas?!?!?! Hahahaha!!! I think you have to be Canadian to truly appreciate it though 🙂
Cyndie says
I could listen to Christmas music all year. It would be mighty hard for me to choose 5 bottom songs. I love any song the Carpenters sing. Merry Christmas (in November) to you!
Traci says
The Christmas Shoes – nope
Nicole says
Biiiig nope for me too! I loathe this one. Why is it even a Christmas song?!
Kacey says
Highly, HIGHLY agree on the little drummer boy. I don’t know what it is about that song but I cannot stand it. Change it every time it comes on. Just gives me the ick 🙅🏻♀️
Also, LOVE just about anything Pentatonix Christmas!
Beth Valenta says
Michael Buble is #1 and Pentatonix Christmas is right there. I am not Jewish but I LOVE Adam Sandler’s Hannukah song, lots of laughs. Bottom is Deck the Halls, Jingle Bells, and Santa Baby.
Leticia says
Top (in no particular order): Silver Bells, Silent Night, White Christmas, The Christmas Song, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
Bonus: any from Charlie Brown Christmas 🙂
Bottom: Wonderful Christmastime, Last Christmas, Grownup Christmas List, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
Lyssy says
Santa Clause is Coming to Town by Bruce Springsteen is another good one. I agree with your bottom 5 except I love Little Drummer Boy by Bob Segar
Danna F says
I love these Top 5, Bottom 5 posts! Good topic…need to ask my husband his. Any vintage artist like Nat King Cole, Burl Ives, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, etc are my favorite. Growing up Elvis Presley’s album was my favorite! Brings so many memories of holidays with my grandparents to mind.
Move over Mariah Carey cause Michael Bubles’ Christmas album is my top fave for the last 5+ years!!!. He is easy on the eye too…Ha! Every time I hear a Carpenter Christmas song , it makes me tear up. I do not know why. I have to turn the radio because I don’t want to be sad. The worst is when it is in a store and I cannot leave quick enough. It is weird!
Must go check out some of the suggestions from some of your readers. I may have a couple new ones this year! Have a great Monday Shay!
Ditto to the Grandma Got Ran Over by a Reindeer song….the worst!
Ellie says
I don’t think I’ve seen anyone mention O Holy Night. That is my all time favorite! I love Josh Groban’s version, but Mariah’s is good too! Thanks for the playlist!!!
K.K. says
OH, one more thing… It wasn’t until last year that I ever heard Barbra Streisand’s version of Jingle Bells. Now that’s a fun version! I feel like I’m missed out for decades!! My nieces and I have had more fun with this one. (I know it won’t link, but if anyone else has missed this one, here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7p5zEiSmUk)
Valerie says
The Carpenters and the Charlie Brown Christmas albums–my absolute faves. When I was in college I introduced my roommate to The Carpenters Christmas album and after that she made me play it every night as we went to sleep. Every time I hear anything Carpenters Christmas it brings back that memory.
Trish Oves says
I love Old Toy Trains and do not like Grandma For Run Over By a Reindeer
As a kid, I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus was upsetting and confusing!
Julie Psurny says
I grew up listening to the Christmas albums of Mitch Miller, Johnny Mathis, and the Ray Conniff Singers. So anything of theirs is a top song for me just for nostalgia’s sake! (I swear I’m not that old, but my parents are! Lol)
I have 2 songs in heavy rotation now, one is Sarah Mclachlan’s cover of River by Joni Mitchell. It’s not really a Christmas song per se, but I think it beautifully speaks to how difficult the season can be for many of us. The other is a mashup of God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen and We Three Kings by the Barnaked Ladies, also featuring Sarah Mclachlan. The bass and harmonies are just incredible!
Lizzie says
So many great Xmas songs, from the 40s thru now. I just can’t do Mariah Cary. Just. Can’t. I love Oh Holy Night by Martina McBride. And, of course, I have to pop out the Partridge Family Christmas CD every year. LOL
Deena says
I like most Christmas songs this time of year but these are my favorites right now.
1. I’ll be home for Christmas
2. White Christmas
3. All I want for Christmas is you (because of Love Actually)
4. You make it feel like Christmas (Gwen Stefani & Blake Shelton)
5. Under the Mistletoe (Kelly Clarkson & Brett Eldredge)
I don’t really dislike any songs that I can think of.
Rachel says
I agree with you about “The Christmas Song”! It does ooze Christmas!
As for my least favorite….The Christmas Shoes. I cannot stand it! I will change the station every time it comes on, and if I don’t have a station to change it to, I will sit in silence until it is off. I understand the “sentiment” or whatever you want to call it, but I think of Christmas as happy, and hearing a song about a child buying a pair of shoes for his/her sick mom (who will not make it another Christmas) is not happy…at all!
I love this “top 5, bottom 5” idea! I need to sit down and come up with a list myself! I’ve never really thought about my favorites, and least favorites (other than “The Christmas Shoes” :/
Joanne says
I don’t like 12 Days of Christmas either… but the 12 Pains of Christmas son makes me laugh.
Emily says
If you have never listened to the Behold the Lamb album by Andrew Peterson, you should at least listen to “Labor of Love.” It can make me weep.
Martha McMurry says
I’m in total agreement with you on all of them. Guilty pleasure in our house is N’sync’s Christmas album. My girls were huge fans.
Brenna Johnson says
Shay!!!!! You hate the faith hills version of “where are you Christmas”? And grown up Christmas list is my fave!!! 🤣🤣🤣 you hate the Kelly Clark’s on version too? Last – have you listened to “Straight no chasers” 12 day of Christmas song?!?? I mean i love so much of everything you post! How can we differ on these songs?!?
Ryan c says
Oh man! So many good songs!
No real order except for…
1. Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree (Brenda Lee of course)
This song remind sme of my Grandma and I’ve always loved it!
Bing Crisby, Micheal Bublé, THE CHIPMUNKS, are all special and fun! All I want for Christmas (Mariah’s the best), Gotta say, i do enjoy Little Drummer Boy, ONLY Whitney Houstons version, mostly for her beautiful voice, the Eagles, and white Christmas(Home Alone soundtrack!)
Bottom 5?
🤔🤔🤔Not really sure, I think I enjoy all the holiday music ❤️🎄
Allison says
TOTALLY agree with bottom five numbers 5, 4, & 3. Whiny and annoying.
I’d add Santa Baby. Such a dumb song. Also I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause. What?! When my children were young they were like, huh? Moms kiss Santa Clause? Also Baby, It’s Cold Outside. HOW DID THIS SONG BECOME A CHRISTMAS SONG?! No… it’s more like the cold weather date rape song. I hate it. These three have me flipping my coffee over to change them. Top Fives were great too!
Nicole Wilder says
My mom’s Christmas tradition was to have The Carpenter’s Christmas playing while we decorated our tree and while we opened our presents. This album is ingrained in my soul and now, I have the same tradition with my family. It’s such a wonderful album!
I agree with most of your list but I have to say, *NSYNC’s Christmas cd is towards the top of my list, especially O Holy Night(Acapella). 🎄
Grace says
All I want for Christmas is you is my #1!!! Oh What a Glorious Night (sidewalk prophets) and Go tell it on the Mountain would round out my top 3!

Amanda says
that bottom 5 list is SPOT ON
Lauren says
Oh gosh, Merry Christmas Darling will go down as one of my most unliked songs ever! Happy you love it though! I also don’t like the Christmas Shoes song. I want to feel happy when listening to holiday music, not sad. I will also say, the entire Spirited soundtrack is quickly running up to the top of my list!

4. Do they know it’s Christmas- Band Aid

I 100% agree with your top and bottom five, but would have to add some to the bottom: Dominic the donkey, I want a hippopotamus for Christmas, and feliz navidad.
Other faves include Blue Christmas, is Zat you, Santa Claus, and melakamikimaka.
Dawn says
Totally agree—100% with you!!
Kim says
I have to admit Clay Aikens Christmas CD (remember him??) is one of my all time favorites! I don’t know what it is but that’s the one I play the most lol. I really love the Rob Thomas song Merry New York Christmas and Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas. Not many that I don’t like but 12 Days of Christmas would probably be up there.
Lauren says
I thought for sure you would have “Christmas Shoes” as one of the bottom 5!! I love it honestly but literally no one else does!! Lol
Mix and Match Mama says
Well that one is just not merry or bright at all!
Kasey says
have you seen the movie with Kimberly Williams PAisely?? so good. SO SAD!!!
Kacy M says
Christmas is my favorite holiday of the year and this may be blasphemous but I absolutely hate Christmas music 😂💀😬
Ryan c says
OMG! I don’t even want to know your TOP/BOTTOM Chritmas movies! Ok….maybe I do! 😉
Margaret says
Agree! Shay, post your top and bottom 5 Christmas movies!
Kristin says
Maybe it’s because I’m an Episcopalian, but Christmas songs always means hymns to me. And my favorites are In the Bleak Midwinter and Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming. I don’t want to mention my bottom five, because surely at least one will become an earworm and drive me batty, but they are all not hymns, and at least one is on your bottom 5. Re. Little Drummer Boy, have you heard the version Bing Crosby and David Bowie did? Love it!
Corinne Angold says
Silent Night (Lord of my Life) by Lady A just gives me goosebumps -I love it so!
WhittyWife (Lindsay) says
Girl, yes! I don’t mind the drummer boy… but otherwise, I can’t stand the other 4 either. 😄
Janice says
I was never a fan of The Little Drummer Boy UNTIL For King And Country came out with their version! You have to play it loud. It’s my favorite!
Kasey says
oh my gosh- have you heard their version of O Come o Come Emmanuel?? it gives me goosebumps!! i’ll have to listen to the drummer boy version of them too. Thanks for sharing!!
Lisa says

Carol of the Bells
Blue Christmas
Bottom 5:

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

All I Want for Christmas Is You
Kasey says

1. Breath of Heaven- Jesse James Decker
2. Halleluja- Carrie Underwood & John Legend

Yesssssss!
Jennifer says
Yes! This song bothers me so much every time it comes on the radio I shout “Yes! she knew!” And changed the station 😂
Heather says
Michael Buble’s Christmas album is on repeat in my car all season long! His version of ‘All I Want for Christmas’ rivals Mariah’s, and I’m in love with his ‘Cold December Night’!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes!!!! I love that song too!
Kristen says
How has nobody mentioned “Feliz Navidad” or “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”? “Feliz Navidad” is super repetitive (the same two sentences over and over?) And “Baby It’s Cold Outside” is super cringey and makes me think date rape, especially the Zooey Deschanel one that sounds like a 50-year-old man is trying to seduce a teenager and won’t accept “no.”
Marti says
I love Christmas Wrapping! It’s on repeat on my playlist. I have to disagree with Andrew on this one!
Erin says
Lady A’s version of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas is SO GOOD as well!
Sara says
Such a fun post!!

Santa Claus Is Coming to Town by Bruce Springsteen.
Do they know it’s Christmas.

Christmas Time is Here from Charlie Brown Christmas!
