Happy Tuesday, friends!
You guys, we only have 8 more days left of school! Right this minute, my mama heart is SO EXCITED! Even though, I always get a little panicky about working and having the kids home all summer (it’s always SO tricky…especially the first few weeks), I would rather have them home with me than not. We are counting down the days over here.
Last week, after months of meticulous planning, we loaded up everything we have ordered/packed for our bonus home on Nantucket and Andrew and my dad drove it (plus our vehicle) from McKinney to Nantucket. The boys left on Wednesday morning at 3:00 AM while the girls…
…left on Thursday morning and flew to Boston. Spoiler alert: this is the easier of the two ways 🙂 .
If you’ve read my blog for a while, you know that driving long distances is my dad’s jam. In fact, he has not one, not two, BUT THREE Guinness World Records in the driving category (driving the 48 states in the least amount of fuel, miles covered and time) and has done the trip an additional two times (so he’s driven the 48 states 5 times) just to personally beat his own records (which Guinness has officially retired which means he’ll forever hold them). So, many months ago when Andrew and I were putting this trip together, my dad was quick to say “I’m taking one vehicle”. Amen. And amen. (Thank heavens, I didn’t have to do it!). It took the boys 30 hours to get from McKinney to the ferry terminal in Hyannis, MA…
…where my mom and I met up with them on Thursday afternoon.
Me: Um, Andrew, can you please load my rather large suitcase in the rather full U-Haul? Thank you!
We had ferry tickets on the “slow ferry” for both our car and the U-Haul which takes two hours to get to Nantucket instead of the passenger speed ferry that takes only one…
…yay! We made it! It wasn’t my favorite way to spend two hours, but I didn’t get sick, so I consider that a win.
We arrived around 6:30 PM, checked into our favorite hotel and then…
…set off to stroll town and find a place to eat.
Awwwww! As many times as Andrew and I have been to Nantucket and as many times as my parents have been and as many times as I’ve been with my parents, we’ve never all four been together without kids. It was such a special weekend just the four of us. We had a delicious dinner at The Charlie Noble and then crashed. The men were exhausted.
The next morning, we woke up and met at 6:45 to get our day started. Since our house was completely empty (as all of our contents were in said U-Haul), we stayed at the hotel this first night. We were going to stay at our house as well this weekend but by the end of the first day, we decided to extend our stay at The Nantucket in order to give ourselves more time to get moved in, unpacked and clean it without the pressure of “we need a place to shower/sleep/etc”.
The Lord was good to us all weekend! We had BEAUTIFUL weather for unpacking. It could have been raining/windy…instead, it was absolutely gorgeous!
Our favorite hotel on the island!
We grabbed breakfast and headed to the house to show my parents for the first time and start unloading the U-Haul. The four of us worked and worked and worked (moving into a space is such hard work!), so by noon, we were ready to take a break and have a quick lunch at…
…Something Natural 🙂 .
After lunch, we worked right up until it was time for dinner. We ran back to the hotel, had 10 minutes to change and then rewarded ourselves with a delicious dinner at The Sea Grill followed by…
…The Juice Bar. We were beat and headed straight to bed when we were done.
The next day, thankfully, the U-Haul was emptied and we just had work to do that morning in the house before heading back into town to get odds and ends (another extension cord, a lamp, one extra mirror, etc). We decided to only add art to the house that was purchased on the island, so this gave us a minute to look for that as well.
It was another beautiful day on the island, and we certainly didn’t take it for granted.
We stopped by our friend Pete’s…
…and bought three pieces including this fun patriotic one here. It just made me happy when I saw it.
Nantucket was looking extra pretty this Mother’s Day weekend.
After finishing up at the house, it was time to change and take my parents out for one last dinner for all of their AMAZING work…
…Nantucket has always been a special place to my parents. The first time they brought me to the island I was 14 years old (Kensington’s age!). It has been a dear love of ours for decades. My dad said over the weekend that he never feels more at home than when he’s there. It’s a place they’ve taken many friends, all of our family and now, they’ll get to come visit us too. In fact, my grandmother likes to remind me that before my grandfather passed, he wanted to visit all of his favorite places…Walt Disney World, Maui and his last trip, Nantucket. It’s very dear to us all.
One last dinner…
…at the coziest spot…
…Queequeg’s before heading to back.
Andrew and I had to get up at 4:00 AM the next morning to take the slow ferry back over to Hyannis, unload all of the boxes and trash at the appropriate place (we didn’t leave any on the island), take the drive back to Boston and fly home.
So many photos, details and memories are in our future this summer. Before I share the specifics, I would really like the kiddos to see first, so I apologize for that (but they’re so excited, so I want to show them first), but I will share this…
…our house on Friday afternoon (holy cow, how did the four of us make this mess and then clean it up!)…and then…
…the after 🙂 . Looks like a great place to call home from time to time, right?!
We saved, we prayed, we planned, we packed, he drove and we made it. We are so excited about a fun bonus chapter in our story. We are ready to enjoy Sea Shulls! xx
Bekcy Przy says
Oh how exciting! So many fun family/friend memories are going to be made there over the years! It is awesome to have a spot that feels like home the second you get there.
Quick question. I am going to Nantucket in September. I am flying into ACK. What is the best way to get to my hotel? uber? I wasn’t planning on renting a car, but if that is the easiest, I will go that route. I am not going to go all Sally Hepworth and try to snag a ride from someone;-).
Have a fabulous Tuesday!
Mix and Match Mama says
I would take a cab (there are many right there outside of the airport) or Uber. You don’t need a car. Have so much fun!
Juanita Gil says
Well, welcome to Nantucket that’s so funny we will be making the reverse trip in about four weeks to Houston Texas after 20 years on Nantucket.

Sarah says
I love this so very much! How wonderful you can enjoy this bonus house in a place you all love. Wishing you many many years of happiness in your new home!!
Tara says
I’m curious how your kids can play middle school/high school sports and be away all summer? Our kids have multiple camps and practices (minus a 2 week dead period) that are mandatory.
Mix and Match Mama says
I think things are a bit different down in Texas. The Texas UIL regulates sports and practices pretty seriously. For instance, middle school football for Smith can’t start until the first day of school. Kensington has two high school cheer things but one is at the very beginning of summer and the other, the very end. I don’t know? We’re going to take it month by month and make adjustments as needed.
Susan L says
That’s so great to hear the way Texas does school sports! Kids need a break, both physically and mentally, from year round sports. Love your home and can’t wait to see your adventures. Your parents really are angels on earth! Enjoy!!
Mix and Match Mama says
They really do! Teachers, coaches and parents do too. We have one chance at raising our four kids, and we’re praying really hard we don’t screw it up and spend as much quality time as we can with them.
Amy Heinl says
So excited for all of you. The kids have to n be bursting at the seams to see it (as are we…lol). From the outside, the home looks stunning. Can’t wait for all your stories this summer from Sea Shull.

Carissa says
This is so inspirational Shay! Not just the beautiful island home but the motivation behind it all, spending time with your family, making memories together and making that a priority over all the “stuff” and scheduled activities summers can get filled up with. It reminds me of this little quote:
“Near the sea we forget to count the days.”
Blessings to you all for a healthy and happy summer!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you so much, Carissa. This means so much!
Chrissy says

How have I been following your blog for years (the oldest story I can remember was of your old house and rodents?) and didn’t know that about your dad?!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh that was 2013…and it feels like yesterday. Ha! What a disgusting chapter of our marriage. Thank you for following along! I’m so grateful!
Karah Stracener says
I am so thrilled for your family and all the amazing memories yall will make for years to come. The cottage looks adorable and I cannot wait to see more. I am looking forward to all your ACK posts this summer. Congrats Sea Shulls on your new adventure 🙂
Dee says
We have a second home (on our own island) on a lake (Lake St. Clair) here in Michigan and it’s a lot of work. Thankfully we are in the same state and only use our place from April to first of December (the lake freezes over). The only way to get to our island is by boat (we have 2 of them). You will love your second home. My girls grew up there. It’s been in my husbands family for about 60 years. We rebuilt it in 1987.
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh how fun! I love Michigan so much. I bet your lake house is beautiful year around but especially lovely in the fall.
kristen says
What a cute house! so happy for y’all. Shay, somehow you look exactly like your mom but also exactly like your dad! Also, would it be possible to know what lip color your mom is wearing in the first pic of the two of y’all? thank you so much 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
I love that you think I resemble both. I think my personality does too. I can certainly ask my mom!
Jen Small says
I have to know where you got that cute sign for the house. Just bought a beach house, and we are naming ours “Sea Smalls.”

God is good in helping you thru all of this.
May y’all have a fabulous summer
Paula R. says
Congratulations, Shay and Shull family!
The house is so “quintessential” Nantucket. So charming and beautiful. Praying this home will be a haven of peace and delight for all who enter.
I can’t believe your Dad holds actual Guinness Book records for driving. That’s so cool and crazy.
So… please share all the deets as you begin this new phase of life on Nantucket. No detail is too small to share. I’m so excited for summer Nantucket content.
After settling in this weekend… do you think you are pretty much move-in ready?
Do you feel like you thought of most everything to bring? I’m sure between both your and Andrew’s meticulous lists, you thought of everything. It’s just interesting to see if you thought of things once you were there… that you needed to buy. Blessings as you pack up to head to Nantucket soon!
Mix and Match Mama says
We are 100% ready to move in (clothes, clean bedding, toothbrushes, bikes…you name it!). I honestly don’t think we could have prepared better save an extension cord or two. Sometimes, it pays to be two very Type-A people in a relationship 🙂 . Thank you for your sweet comment!! I am so blessed by readers like YOU!

Best wishes!
Mix and Match Mama says
I have some pretty amazing parents. Andrew does too! His parents were at our house taking care of the four kiddos 🙂 .
Nikki says
Looks picture perfect! (And, I’ve been reading your blog for ages upon ages and did not know about your dad’s Guiness Records … how cool!) Just shared your blog with a friend who is going to Nantucket as soon as school lets out. I’m sure your tips will be appreciated!
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwww! Yay! Thank you, Nikki! And yes!! They don’t put every record in the physical book each year (there are too many to record in a book), but they did feature him in the 1998 book (the year he earned the record for least amount of fuel).
Elspeth Mizner says
So excited for you all and this new chapter! Can’t wait to follow along!

Jessica says
Did you have to buy another vehicle or did your parents drive it back to Texas?
Mix and Match Mama says
My parents actually stayed an extra day and flew home yesterday. We left a vehicle on the island. It’s one we had here in McKinney and had saved for such as time as this!
Sarah says
Cannot wait for the tour!
Are those the polished gunmetal aviators? I LOVE them.
Mix and Match Mama says
They are!
Keisha Dawson says
Congratulations! I am so excited for you all!
Gail says
Ten years from now it will be so fun to hear all about this from your kids point of view… their favorite memories and all their ‘coming of age’ things that are important to teenagers! I am curious about how you will maintain your Texas house during the summer… I know Andrew does all the keeping the patios clean every day and all the beautiful plants. Will someone come to do that or just one big clean up at the end of the summer to get it ready for you?
Mix and Match Mama says
We are going to put away and simplify as much as we can before we go and then, we have someone taking care of things while we’re gone as well. I can’t wait to hear their perspective 10 years from now too! I pray it’s as special for them as it will be Andrew and me.
Shelia says
Yay!!!! Congratulations Sea Shulls … I’m so excited for you all & can’t wait to see pics & follow along with y’alls new adventures!!!
Have a great summer, hope to run into you in Downtown McKinney ❤️

I’m so happy for y’all that you are able to make this work! Owning a second home is a LOT of work, especially one so far away. So far, you’re crushing it!!
Have you been posting your blogs later? I’m an early reader and when I checked this morning (6 am eastern time), this hadn’t posted yet. No big deal, I’m just happy I came back to check again!
Mix and Match Mama says
Really? I thought we had it fixed. I was having tech issues last week, but when I looked this morning, it looked like it published on time. Can you please let me know tomorrow what happens? Thank you!
Lauren says
Sure thing! It usually posts at 5:30ish my time, I’ll let you know what time I actually see it pop up.

Christine says
Congratulations!!!
Liz Thorson says
Thrilled for you and your family, Shay! I love your family history of loving Nantucket being carried on by you and Andrew’s kiddos. We spent almost the 1st year of our marriage living in Boston while my husband earned his Masters degree. We loved exploring the Cape, but couldn’t afford the ferry ticket to Nantucket. I’d love to spend a week there now, celebrating an anniversary! Maybe next year!? P.S. Thought about you yesterday when my team, the Mariners, beat your Red Sox and knew you would not be happy. Do you and Catherine banter about the Mariners vs the Red Sox or is she a Rangers fan, now?
Mix and Match Mama says
I would say that she’s very passionate about her Seahawks but not baseball. We just beat her Kracken though, but I don’t think she cared much. Ha!
Sheaffer says
What a weekend! My goodness y’all were productive! Excited for your fam and all of the memories you are going to make there!!!!

What a giant pile of boxes and garbage– a sure sign of a very successful move-in weekend! It sounds wonderful.

So darn excited about this! I want to visit!!! I know you’re going to have the best time there!!
Jennibell says
Exciting days ahead!,, I’m glad you have been able to make this dream come true for your family 🙂
Rae Bush says
Your dad holds three world records for driving all 48 states? Say MORE! So interesting.
Mix and Match Mama says
He does! There were a lot of rules (getting a ticket of any kind disqualified you, you could only have two drivers and one navigator, witnesses and photos at each state line, etc). All three times he took different vehicles and different routes (depending on which one he was doing), and since they’re retired records now, he and his two friends (the other driver and navigator) will always be the record holders.
Jennifer Williams says
I can’t wait to follow along! This place looks dreamy!
Kelly says
So wonderful when all of the planning, praying, saving and just plain hard work pays off! I wish you and your family health and happiness in your Nantucket home:).

Your new bonus home looks so lovely!! I am from the UK and visited in the summer of 2016 and completely agree with your sense of immediately feeling like you were home, Nantucket will always hold a special place in my heart! I also love your Nantucket necklace, such a special touch. Can’t wait for all of the Nantucket summer content☺️
Kelly says
This is such an adventure to follow along with. So many questions and curiosities- maybe this will lead you to write another book:) It is such an intentional and unique thing to do… I will love following along as you navigate a new lifestyle in a new place.
Do you have plans to travel back much for work or family things? Or is the goal to stay pretty much the entire season? And will any friends or family be visiting ? Just curious and so admire your focus in making this happen!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you, Kelly. I appreciate your comment so much as I can tell it’s super thoughtful and sincere. Andrew will pop back for work as needed, but I can work from home which means, I will stay on the island and work all summer. Last summer, we actually took notes in our phone of how often we saw friends and family and honestly? It wasn’t that much. Between sports, camps, vacations and such, everyone was just so busy (which is awesome!), so that helped us solidify that if they’re all off doing their fun things that are important to them, we should do the same. Special people will come and visit this summer when they can, but we also didn’t put any expectations on anyone. I want people to do what feeds them and their families, and thankfully, coming for a visit is on many peoples’ list this summer season.
CJ Towers says
Oh that is such a nice quiet neighborhood you’re in! Well, at least it was quiet when I was biking in the area. I pray that God bless you all in your second home.
