Happy Tuesday, friends!
I don’t know about you, but everywhere I turn, I’m seeing alllllllll the mentions of: COASTAL CHIC, COASTAL HOME, COASTAL VIBES, COASTAL LIFE, COASTAL DECOR, and of courses…COASTAL GRANDMOTHER.
I mean…right?!
If you haven’t heard the phrase “coastal grandmother (or granddaughter)” it’s very popular on social media right now…especially because it’s mainly a summertime aesthetic/vibe. This is a very Nancy Meyers’ movie/Hamptons-y/neutral/beachy/relaxed/lovely aesthetic.
No matter what you call it, this movie right here…
…is the perfect way to enjoy it 🙂 .
As you know, I LOVE any and all things seasonal, so as you can imagine (especially having recently returned from Nantucket), I’m VERY into this style. It’s just HAPPY and LIGHT and CALMING and BEAUTIFUL! It’s this…
….yes, yes, yes! I feel it in my bones.
If you’re like me and looking to add a little seasonal summery coastal style into your day, I have several different ways to do it.
Here we go…
I’m starting with the obvious, no? I find all of these movies relaxing and up lifting. They all include great soundtracks, beautifully decorated homes, strong female leads and friendship. Not all of these might be “coastal grandmother” by definition, but they all check the boxes for me that put me in the summery/coastal-y mood.

It’s Complicated
Book Club
Book Club 2
Under the Tuscan Sun
Mama Mia
After you watch your movie…
This time of year, I feel like I read one book in this genre after another (and I’m not complaining about it!).
Here are just a few of my faves (but really, there are so many!):
The Summer We Started Over by Nancy Thayer
The Five-Star Weekend by Elin Hilderbrand
The Little Italian Hotel by Phaedra Patrick
The Magic of Sea Glass by Jenny Hale
One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle
I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again…Pinterest is my favorite form of social media because it’s just HAPPY! If you’re not following me on Pinterest you are missing out. I do very little well in life, but geez, I am a champion “Pinner”. I have a COASTAL LIVING BOARD you’ll totally want to try out for some coastal style inspo. This board is just happy. Scrolling through is pleasing to the eye, soothing, relaxing and oh so summery. Whether you’re looking for outfit inspiration, home decor, movies to watch…whatever it is, Pinterest is your coastal style hotspot.
For two years now, I’ve been listening to some amazing “Coastal Grandmother” stations on Spotify. I *believe* it was one of you who turned me on to this genre, and I absolutely love it. It’s the perfect background music for work, cleaning up the house, folding laundry…it’s just fabulous! As you can see, there are many, many options!
Should you want to add some coastal style touches to your house or wardrobe, here are some that I have myself and LOVE…
3: COTTON LINEN GAUZE BLEND TOP
And finally, based on all the movies and books I’ve read and things I’ve “pinned”, these are some simple ways to add a coastal style to your life right now…
1: Add fresh flowers to your kitchen counter.
2: Enjoy dinner (or any meal!) outdoors.
3: Wear white.
4: Visit a farmers market.
5: Go for a walk.
6: Work in your garden.
7: Spend time with your friends.
Just a little coastal summer style for your Tuesday.
Okay, it’s your turn to share! What do you do to add a little coastal style into your summer? There is no detail too big or small. I would LOVE a few more suggestions! Please comment and share! xx

This was such a fun post! I live in Iowa which is very far from any coast, but I love to have a pitcher of iced tea in the fridge during the summer months. It helps me feel a little closer to the coast!
Mix and Match Mama says
I LOVE this simple idea!!
Lindi says
For someone who is landlocked and not near the coast, I don’t think coastal style resonates. I enjoy visiting the beach very much, but in my day to day life, I don’t think or live coastal. 🤔

Shay, I don’t know how you do it, but I feel like more often than not this year I’ll open your blog and be like “I was JUST thinking about that yesterday!!!!” I guess we are very similar!!! This blog post is perfect this morning. I feel like I need to bookmark it and buy everything off that graphic haha! Now if tomorrow’s post is on lowering cortisol levels, I’ll know you’re truly inside my brain 😉
Mix and Match Mama says
YAY!!!! You just made my day!!! Thank you for saying that 🙂 . I also lol when I read the last sentence!
Jennifer C. says
I think I’ve been a coastal grandmother since I was 16. 🤣 I remember being so inspired by Diane Keaton’s character’s style, even back then! Now I’m 41 and living my best coastal grandmother life! Give me all the airy neutrals (although I do love me some black, too!)!
Mix and Match Mama says
We should be BFF 🙂 .
Angie says
Ohh I love everything about this post! My family and I live on the coast of NH (near Portsmouth) and we live and breathe all things coastal.
Sarah Shaneyfelt says
Nancy Myers can do no wrong and I wish I could live in one of her movies–the Something’s Gotta Give house might be my favorite!

What a fun post!

I would add making a pint to slow down too. Take time to really be present wherever you are in life.

I like to think my work clothes are “beachy office” but then a friend told me “no they are just beachy” 😂. Either way I’m pulling it off. Maybe next time I’ll say coastal grandma!
Mix and Match Mama says
I am 100% supportive of your beachy office clothes 😉 .

Coastal farmhouse is how I would describe my style! Love everything about a relaxed, cozy, yet put together and clean vibe. ❤️
I’m reading The Five Star Weekend right now! After a year long hiatus, I’m back on the Hilderbrand train!
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s another great phrase for “it”! I love it!
Samantha says
I’m reading The Five Star Weekend right now too and one of stars mentioned something about a coastal grandmother look. I love the chill vibe!
Talia says
This has been my style for some time now. I love how clean and yet very welcoming and comforting it is. Your blog is my bright spot! Always a delightful read!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank YOU so very much!

Shay – did you watch the CBS Sunday morning program this week? They interviewed Elin Hilderbrand at her home in Nantucket. I thought of you instantly & wanted to text you to tell you to watch it! Lol! Sad news for her readers though – she’s retiring!
Mix and Match Mama says
I did not watch! I heard she was retiring…I need to go look that up now and see if I can watch the playback.
Jess says
I love this and have been looking forward to your posts as part of my daily routine!!
I love changing out curtains for the season as that lets me have that light and air feeling and then the soft cozy once it gets back to sweater weather. We’re also big open window people as long as it’s below 80 we are windows open and all breezes welcome!!!
Thank you again for sharing so much and your time spent blogging, it’s such a welcome pick-me-up every day!!! 💛💛💛
Arlene says
Love this post! Have you tried the Endless summer lotion? I’m so intrigued and curious, just wanted to know your thoughts on the scent!
Mix and Match Mama says
YES!!! I’m actually using it on Nantucket right now. It’s beachy with a warmer undertone (if that makes any sense?). I love it!
Arlene says
Thank you so much!!! Will order a small one and give it a go! Thanks girl!!
Arlene says
OMG! I love it!! I’m very picky about smells and can’t tolerate too strong of ones, but this is the perfect one fir me!! Thanks for the recommendation!! And finding one with clean ingredients!!!
Hope says
I’m beachy office too apparently since today I’m wearing white jeans with turquoise tie-dye top.
Beth Valenta says
Oh how I love coastal and neutrals. I have lived in what I call “fun pants” so far since May. Linen type flowy pants (Old Navy has the cutest) with a tank! My favorite are small or big boils with shrimp and fresh corn while eating outside.
Alison says
Well, I didn’t know it until I read this post, but coastal grandmother is my vibe. The books and movies you listed are some of my absolute favorites! They give me all the happy vibes!
Kristy says
White wine! A cold glass of white wine.
Mix and Match Mama says
YES!!

Happy Summer Shay! I just finished reading One Italian Summer and although it was different than what I expected it was really really good and I can’t stop thinking about it. Now I want to go to Italy and feel all the feels reading the book gives you. I live in Florida where it is basically summer year round but I’m loving all the coastal content!
Kelly Jo Kirkland says
All the summer/beachy candles, and now I need a beach! Also, the white vuori tennis skirt is my favorite!! Thanks for the rec!
Kerri says
Couldn’t love this post more. Coastal Grandmother is my styling Vibe, my decorating Vibe, and just my what I want to emulate!
sandi says
I need to learn to incorporate this style as we are downsizing to a house on the bay. The light, airy and simple colors are so different from our current home. There is even a rope toilet paper holder in the half bathroom. Dark colors on the walls are my favorite with Sherwin Moody Blue being at the top of my list. Embracing these lighter colors is going to be a challenge and fun too.
Katie Stewart says
One more thought: read a comment about Endless Summer fragrance. You need to try Dressed in White at BBW. Instant “coastal grandmother” vibes! I want my entire house and life to smell of Dressed in White!
Mix and Match Mama says
And I google that immediately…

White sneakers, gauzy white blouse, baggy tan linen pants, “deliberately” messy hair, and a floppy tan hat….Bouquet of flowers sticking out of the top of my LL Bean tote at the Farmers Market…..sigh….
Mix and Match Mama says
YES!!!!!

Loved this post! I recently rewatched Something’s Gotta Give dvd with the directors cut. Nancy Meyers and Diane Keaton talking about the making of the movie throughout. Learned a lot including the fact that the little grocery store where they filmed was Ina Garten’s.
Mix and Match Mama says
I need to watch that STAT!!!!!!
