Happy What’s Up Wednesday!
You guys, we landed on Nantucket yesterday and this family of TEN is officially settling in for the remainder of the summer 🙂 .
We are here and we are oh so happy.
Speaking of happy, today is one of my favorite posts of the month because it’s always HAPPY! On the last Wednesday of every month, Sheaffer and I host this little linky party where we share what’s going on with us right now. It’s a little food, a little family, a little what we’re wearing, a little what we’re doing, a little what we’re watching and a little bit of everything else all in one post.
I hope you’re having a great morning!
Here we go…
Allllll the Nantucket food!
From burgers on the beach to our favorite restaurants, we are excited about all the fun fare in our future.
Don’t forget, you can see my complete list of places to eat (from casual to fancy, beach to cozy, breakfast to dinner) on Nantucket HERE!
Since we’ve been chatting all things Northern Ireland, it’s sent me down the path of reminiscing about our trip to Ireland in 2018…
…that was SUCH a sweet trip too! Look how tiny they were…
…I would give anything to go back and snuggle those four nuggets at these ages…
…life keeps moving oh too quickly for me.
You guys, I AM IN LOVE…
…with my new WEIGHTED VEST 🙂 .
I love walking for so many reasons, but after listening to podcasts and learning more about rucking, I thought it was time to at least invest in a weighted vest to see if I could handle a bit of load when I’m out and about. THIS VEST comes in several different weight options, and I bought the 12 pound one. Smith Shull was teasing me a bit until he picked it up and then he was like “Wow, that is actually really heavy”. I felt a bit vindicated 😉 .
THIS ONE is pretty slim fitting, adjustable and comfy. I’ve used it several times now and my “normal” metrics have all been a bit higher (more calories burned while on my walk, higher heartrate), but the best part is that I have been sore afterward. My goal is strength building, so I was extra pleased with that.
If you’ve missed my NORTHERN IRELAND RECAPS this week, I’ve shared PART ONE and PART TWO so far. I feel like all we’ve been up to recently is traveling (which we love!), but I’m also excited now to settle in for the remainder of summer.
I mean, it’s all relative because there are way fewer mosquitos on Nantucket than in my backyard in McKinney (and I know there are places with a lot more than McKinney), buuuuuut I’m just saying, when I get to Heaven, I might be asking the Lord why he thought they were necessary. I’m just saying.
This. On repeat. For the next few weeks. On. REPEAT.
If you missed our JUNE BOOK CLUB post, I shared which book we’ll all be reading in July…
…Swan Song by Elin Hilderbrand!
We would love to have you participate with us! Read it and then we’ll discuss on July 22nd.
My JUNE BOOK REVIEW will be out ASAP, but in the meantime don’t forget…
…you can also catch my 30 BEST BEACH BOOKS!
You guys, THIS STATION has EVERY SONG from Derry Girls. It’s crazy long (like 14 hours!), filled with SO MANY amazing songs from the 1990s and has been playing in my car for the last month 🙂 .
A June recap for you…
TANK + SHORTS + SANDALS + HOOP EARRINGS
GAUZE TOP (on sale!) + SHORTS + FLIP FLOPS (on major sale for only $14 and in so many other colors!)
The FLIP FLOPS are super comfy too! So is my BEACH SWEATER!
A LIGHTWEIGHT SWEATER and WHITE JEANS for the win
And finally…
PAJAMAS (of course!)!
Alllllllll the summer family time on Nantucket 🙂 .
And because we will be “beaching” a lot this summer…
…just a reminder that you can see all of our BEST BEACH FINDS in one spot! This post has everything from our COLLAPSIBLE FOLDABLE WAGON to our favorite BEACH TOWELS, our BEACH GRILL, BEACH BLANKET and more all in one spot!
That wraps up this month’s What’s Up Wednesday!
Don’t forget, if you blogged along with us today, please link up below.
I’m off, friends! I hope you have a wonderful Wednesday, and I’ll see you back here tomorrow for some EXTRA HAPPY FUN! xx

Family of eight? I’m so confused 🙂 Enjoy your Nantucket time.
Mix and Match Mama says
I corrected my typo. Clearly, I can’t count or proofread. 😉
Elspeth says
How fun! Enjoy the rest of the summer in Nantucket!

Bianca Catalano says
I think I need the gauze too! What size are you wearing? I seem to always be the same size 😉
Mix and Match Mama says
I love it!! I always buy mine in a 2!
Bianca Catalano Catalano says
Thank you! Purchased that and the best! You’re the best, enjoy summer!
Mix and Match Mama says
Let me know what you think about it!
Sheila says
I’ve been wanting to try “rucking” myself with a weighted vest!! So glad you posted about this! Did you have to work your way up, as far as time and/or distance at first?
Mix and Match Mama says
I started with 12 which for me (who strength trains regularly) was a bit of an effort but I could still complete my normal 4 mile loop in McKinney that I love. I do think I’ll move up, but I want my next one to be a “bigger” jump for days when I really want to push myself. In the Texas summer heat, I feel like I can’t push myself too much.
Debbra Weber says
Thank you for this info! It’s in my cart and will add rucking to my workout routine. ENJOY NANTUCKET!!
Sarah says
It’s recommended to start with 5-10% of your body weight and gradually increase as you’re ready. Beginning with shorter distances until you build comfort with it is best. Too much too soon and you’ll put too much strain on your body.
Marie C says
Sounds so nice to settle into Nantucket for the rest of the summer. I’m a little confused by the “family of eight 6 people and I thought 4 dogs?
Mix and Match Mama says
Did I say 8? For the love I need to proofread better. I will adjust that now. Sigh.
Mix and Match Mama says
Just fixed it!! Thank YOU!
Marie C says
Of course! Have a great summer ❤️
Eliza says
As always love reading about your family’s adventures…
Could you please list a couple of the podcasts you listened to/learned about rucking? Thank you! ☀️
Mix and Match Mama says
Have you read Outlive? Peter Attia talks about rucking A LOT. I bet he mentions it in every single podcast episode at one point and I *think* even has an entire episode dedicated to it. Cynthia Thurlow just mentioned the weighted vest in a recent episode. I *think* it was the episode with Dr. Mariza Snyder.
Eliza says
Ok, Thank you! I’ll check those out.
Sarah Shaneyfelt says
Is it Peter Attia who’s talked about the weighted vests?? I feel like I listen to so many functional medicine and wellness podcasts that I can’t remember where I heard it! I’m glad you feel like it’s helping you gain strength. I’m just now in Part 3 where he’s talking about strength and cardio–I have loved this book so far and have learned so much! But also really motivated to adjust my life to increase my health span 🙂
MeetTheShaneyfelts
Mix and Match Mama says
He talks a lot about rucking with rucking packs (where you can adjust the weight). Isn’t that book LIFE CHANGING?! It was one of Cynthia Thurlow’s guests who brought up the weighted vest and then Cynthia said she uses them now too. I LOVE it!
Sarah Shaneyfelt says
Okay maybe it was Cynthia’s podcast then! I started listening after you recommended her–and her voice is so soothing! She’s such an enjoyable listen!
Mix and Match Mama says
I could not agree more!!
Lindsey says
Hey Shay – Oh man, you inspire me to read every time I come to your blog. I’m super consistent on my time in the Word (also doing TBR right now), but struggle to MAKE the time to read elsewhere. I daydream of reading…and I’ve got a stack on my nighstand, a bunch of books in Amazon cart you and others recommend, but I just can’t seem to pick up my pace. My question: I’ve never read Elin Hilderbrand. Swan Song looks like the end of a series…where would you start with her books? I can maybe listen on Audible when I’m driving kids around and get through them faster to make it to Swan Song. Thanks 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwwww! I love that my blog inspires you to read!! That is such a lovely thing to say. Okay, Swan Song isn’t the end of a series. It’s a stand alone book. It is though the end of her career. She’s wrapping up being an author with this book which is why it kind of sounds (when reading the synopsis) like it’s the finish of a series. I hope you read this one along with us! I also love her novels Blue Bistro, 28 Summers, and The Identicals.
Lindsey says
Thanks! When I went to Amazon I saw there were several books set on Nantucket that I thought might be a series… About the time to read, have you posted when/how you read/listen. I’m seriously amazed by how you listen and read so much: books, podcasts, music playlist. Are your days longer than mine?!? Haha
Mix and Match Mama says
I think there are only 3 (maybe 4) not set on Nantucket (those take place on St. John in the Caribbean). You will really love so many of them (if not all!).
Sheaffer says
Those babies in Ireland make me want to bawl!
Mix and Match Mama says
I KNOW!!!!!!
Lindsey says
I’m curious about rucking! Where did you feel sore?
Mix and Match Mama says
Shoulders, back and abs. I’m totally into this vest!
Kelly says
Yay! Looking forward to more Nantucket posts! Where are your sunglasses from in your insta story today? They are darling!
Mix and Match Mama says
Those are my “need big glasses as I’m running out the door late to tennis” glasses. They’re oldies but goodies from Louis Vuitton.
Hallie says
I love these posts! What size are you wearing in the Kut from the Kloth shorts with the black tank top? Thank you!
Mix and Match Mama says
A 2!
S says
I have really enjoyed reading your posts about Northern Ireland. I also loved Derry Girls! A curiosity question- at what age do you allow your kids to watch shows with profanity? My oldest is 10, so we’re just in the beginning stages of this. Just curious how you handle this. Thanks, as always, for sharing your life with us!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh such a good question, and I wish I had a firm answer. I would prefer nothing they watch have profanity, but that seems harder and harder to come by these days. We try to think about content before anything else. I really love Ted Lasso (which also have profanity), but the content just seems more mature, so that’s one my kids haven’t watched yet. Derry Girls content seemed very family friendly albeit Michelle who enjoys the profanity. So, I don’t have one answer, but I do really think about content. Sex and violence are another issue all together, and we do as much as we can to minimize that content.

I attended one of Elon’s book events last week. She as an author is not retiring. The Nantucket books are ending. Her next book, The Academy will be out next year co-written with her daughter. It’s an adult book based on her daughter’s experience at an exclusive boarding school. She also announced that Netflix will announce The Perfect Couple air date in July and release the trailer.
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s exciting! I’ll for sure read that one too!
Debbie Alsip says
Enjoy the cooler weather and fewer mosquitoes on Nantucket! I’m struggling with bug bites and high temps in AR! My hydrangeas are feeling it, too. Please post pictures of yours on Nantucket. I bet they are gorgeous!
Mix and Match Mama says
They’re starting to bloom but haven’t peaked yet. I’ll be sure to post!
C says
Guess you didn’t want to answer the mayo comment. Another contradiction on your part. This is what happens when you lie to your audience so much. You can’t keep up with all the stories you fabricate.
Mix and Match Mama says
I answered the mayo comment in detail. I think you might need to find another place to spend your time. My happy zone is making you unhappy which isn’t good for anyone. This isn’t required reading. I wish you nothing but the best, but maybe it’s time to focus on positive things. xx
Carolyn says
I feel the same way about onions. They “ruin” a recipe for me, if they accidentally get put on my burger or sandwich I am scraping them off gross, but I’m currently having a quinoa bowl with chopped up purple onion and it’s fine because they blend in to all the other flavors. No big deal. Not everything is black and white, there’s nuance to everything. No need to constantly try and accuse Shay of lying by picking apart every little thing she’s ever typed. I don’t know if it’s the heat or what, but some of the comments have been ridiculous lately. A grown woman is actually sad about your two children not getting to go to a concert and needs you to know that you gave them the wrong gift, bizarre.
Mix and Match Mama says
It doesn’t seem healthy does it? It makes me sad for people who live in such anger and outrage about things that have zero affect on their lives, livelihood, health or happiness. There is just so much brokenness in this world, and I’m often praying for people who seem extra hurt and sad.
Karah Stracener says
Enjoy the rest of your summer on Nantucket. We are headed up to the East Coast next week, Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and I have been referring to your posts so much. I went to Nantucket last summer with a friend and fell in love with the island. I can see why yall love it there so much. I’m now going to have to look up rucking, I am curious.
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwww! Thank YOU, Sarah! I hope you have a wonderful summer!!
Janet Teeter says
I’m ordering that weighted vest. Love this idea! Also, can you recommend a good self tanner? Thanks for another fun post💖
Kay says
Welcome to MA! Our kids (just outside Boston) have their last day of school today-insane-so we’re so ready to SUMMER with you.
I noticed the cutest Stanley-like cup with Nantucket maps on it in your stories the other day. Do you have a link?
Happy Summer!
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwwww. We’re so happy to be here with you!!! Happy LAST DAY!!!! I bought that cup at a store here on Nantucket called Erika Wilson. They have the CUTEST things!
Kate says
Hello,
How do your kids foster good friendships if they are always gone? I’m a flight attendant who travels at least half the month and it’s exhausting/hard to maintain friendships. For kids I would think it’s a must to have a friend group to thrive and connect with. Just curious.
Mix and Match Mama says
I think my family lives in a community where kids are often gone (especially playing youth sports), so it doesn’t seem super out of the norm. My kiddos all have a great community of friends and are all involved in their various activities, but summertime in our Texas community can be lonely if you’re not “doing” and “going” 24/7, so we’re just “doing” and “going” our own way. Between sports and camps (so many camps), kids just seem really busy in our area (I’m not sure whether that’s good or bad, it just is what it is). At the end of the day, our family bond and spending time together is always our #1 focus.
Taylor says
The Abercrombie jean shorts (first one in the post) are the best!!!
K.K. says
I loved a lot in this post, but maybe nothing more than your sentiments about mosquitos… Yes, Shay, yes… WHY?! 😉
Mix and Match Mama says
Like why? Lord, why? I do have that question for him.
Arika says
So since (I think?) K’s Eras show might have been the one that Jason and Travis were at – they talk about it today on their podcast. I’m a Chiefs fan, so I’m a regular listener anyway, but it was fun to hear them talk about their London adventures on the pod. They recorded it on Saturday morning from a pub in London, so it was before Travis went on stage on a later night. But they describe their experience meeting Prince William and the kids, which was super cute. It’s right around the 43 minute mark on the YouTube broadcast. I’m also a regular listener of the Calm Down Podcast with Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson. Again, started listening because I’m a sports fan, but they are so much fun and their pod reminds me of the one you used to do with Erika – just two besties chatting. They were also at one of the London shows so I’m anxious to hear what they have to say about it too. Enjoy your Nantucket summer!
Mix and Match Mama says
Travis was at K’s concert in a suite (they showed him on the Jumbotron), but it was the following night when they were already back home that he took the stage. I watched the video on IG, and it was SO cute!!! I need to listen to those podcasts. I know that Erika regularly listens to both!
Bri says
All of your shorts are so cute!
Becky Carl says
I’m still looking for the mayo comment, lol 🤣🤣🤣
Mix and Match Mama says
Is it the weekend yet? 😉
