Happy Tuesday, friends!
You guys, we are on snow day #4 over here which is the PERFECT time for me to remind you to make my mom’s CHICKEN & DUMPLINGS!
The first time I shared this recipe with you was FOURTEEN YEARS AGO!
My mom has been making this recipe longer than I’ve been alive. Growing up, this was a staple winter supper at our house. It’s CRAZY SIMPLE, it goes in the slow cooker, and it’s especially delicious on really cold winter days. If I’m being honest, it’s not one I tend to make nearly as often as my mama does because it’s a little indulgent. We save this for especially cold days when we’re looking for something really easy, hearty, and extra delish.
After Ashby’s surgery two weeks ago, this was the first thing she asked me to make her while we were home recovering. Who am I to deny that sweet child some chicken and dumplings?! I immediately pulled out my slow cooker and made it.
From my mama’s kitchen to yours, enjoy your winter eats! xx

Description
My mom has been making this recipe longer than I’ve been alive. Growing up, this was a staple winter supper at our house. Ingredients
- 2 pounds of uncooked chicken breasts
- 4 cups of water
- 2 cans of cream of chicken soup
- 1 tablespoon black pepper
- 1 can of refrigerated biscuits (Do not bake, I use Grands)
Instructions
- Place chicken breasts across the bottom of your slow cooker. Top with water and both cans of soup. Add in black pepper.
- Cover and cook on low 7-8 hours or high 3-4 hours. Remove lid about 15 minutes before you’re ready to eat, shred the chicken in the slow cooker using two forks.
- Take your uncooked biscuits and quarter each one (I just tear them with my hands but you could cut them). Add your biscuit pieces into the slow cooker. Cover and continue to let the biscuits cook another 15 minutes.
- After about 15 minutes, remove lid, ladle and serve.
Notes
Anytime we make this, I really “beef up” the recipe by adding extra chicken. I find that we can add up to 4 pounds of chicken without having to add any more cream soups (it’s just not quite as thick). This gives us extra protein without adding the extra soups.

This sounds easy to make and so delicious! I’m thinking you could leave out the biscuits and substitute rice or noodles on the side. Thanks for all your trued and true recipes!
Mix and Match Mama says
Of course!!
Kate says
Do you stir the biscuits in or just leave on top? This looks yummy!
Mix and Match Mama says
I stir them in, but they kind of float, and that’s okay. They’ll cook up in the slow cooker even if they’re on the top.

I just saw this pop up again and had to smile, I’ve been making this recipe for about 14 years now. It’s one of my kids’ all-time favorite meals and still in our regular rotation during winter. Sometimes I add peas, carrots, or corn. Thanks for creating something that’s really stood the test of time
Mix and Match Mama says
YAY! Thank YOU so much for making this one too!

I have made this several times. Sooo So GOOD!! and perfect to the weather we are having. Like you said it is very indulgent so I don’t make it as often either. Maybe 2 or 3 times a year. It also brings back many precious memories. Growing up, chicken and dumplings along with homemade cornbread dressing was the meal everyone requested for our Christmas meal. It was the only time of year that we had them.
Being closer to your Mom’s age, think we could have a day in the life of your Mom.
Mix and Match Mama says
YAY!! I’m so happy you make this too!! And I can absolutely ask her!

I’ve tried quite a few chicken and dumpling recipes over the years. This one seems so simple and stress free! Excited to try as the weather will continue to stay cold here in Huntsville, AL for the next week!
Mix and Match Mama says
It is the easiest! I hope you love it!

It was 17 degrees in Georgia when I read this post this morning and I immediately went to the grocery store after dropping the kiddos off and now my crockpot is started! I’m so excited for dinner! Thanks Shay!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yay! My mom will be so proud 🙂 . Enjoy!

I’ve been making this recipe a few times a year since you originally posted it. I always google it to make sure I have the ingredients and time right! My daughter requested it today (on our fourth snow day too), I was shocked to see it come up as a new post today! How timely. Thanks for all the recipes you’ve shared over the years!
Mix and Match Mama says
Wow! Thank YOU for making these recipes for so many years! Goodness, I am so blessed by it!
Mix and Match Mama says
I never found a good biscuit substitute while we were g-free. I looked and tried so many things, but I never found one. Maybe someone here can comment and share one!
K.K. says
Thanks! Yes, let’s hope so. If I find a good one, I’ll come back here and comment as well. 🙂

Enjoyed your Taco Rice Soup for lunch today. It always hits the spot.
Mix and Match Mama says
I love that one too!!

This looks good! One question, I don’t particularly care for cream of chicken soup… Is there something else you would recommend in place of it?
Thanks 😊
Mix and Match Mama says
Do you care for any cream soups? Mushroom would be an excellent sub!
Jaime says
Do you ever make this on the stove top instead? I don’t have a slow cooker. Just an instant pot!
Mix and Match Mama says
My mom does all the time. I typically always make it in the slow cooker, but it absolutely can be made stovetop as well.
Kristine W says
I love this recipe. I cook it stove stop and add some veggies & skip the dumplings. I serve over mashed potatoes. I call it Goodness in a Bowl.
Amy Mahoney says
Just added this to our meal plan for Sunday night which sounds like the PERFECT way to end a cold weekend 🙂 can’t wait to try it!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yay! I hope you love it!

You never answered my question of how many rooms you get for your entire family when you stay in a hotel while on vacation ? ?
Mix and Match Mama says
Hi Irene, I’ve answered it now three times 😉 . Two. We get two rooms. If you’ll go back to where you’ve asked the question, you’ll see my response.
Nikki Sommer says
How do you make this gluten free? I haven’t been able to find gluten-free biscuits.
Mix and Match Mama says
Unfortunately, I have not been able to make this g-free as I too cannot find a good gf biscuit.
Pam says
Try it with Cream of chicken with herbs soup. So good
