It’s the first edition of Fifty Two Shades of Shay! In case you missed it last week, click here to see what I’m talking about :). There is a giveaway in the post…so you better read it all!
I get a lot of comments and/or email about my makeup. Apparently, when you think Shay…you think makeup. Here’s the thing…I’m a bit of a makeup junkie. And I have been for years. Some people drink when they’re happy…some people eat when they’re sad…I buy lipsticks when I’m experiencing any emotional up or down. A little tube of lipstick just makes me happy. Makeup is definitely a shade of Shay…
I wear lipstick with a gloss over it every day. I put on my lipstick first and then apply the rest of my makeup. The brighter the lipstick, the less other makeup I feel you need…so the lipstick sets the tone for my makeup routine. These are my glosses. I love MAC and Nars the best.
My favorite lip gloss is this MAC Like Venus. It’s pink with a little sparkle. In other words…it’s awesome.
These are my MAC lipsticks. Just my MACs. They make my heart happy. I keep the tubes upside down, so that I can quickly and easily find which color I’m looking for. I also keep them grouped by color as well…I tend to buy pinks, purples and nudes. And of course, I have the famous MAC Russian Red…every girl needs one good red lipstick.
My very favorite is St. Germaine. In my opinion, it’s the perfect pink for your pout.
This is what I call my “base” drawer. These are all of the things that I use to create a base before I add the color.
For days when I need a little more coverage, I use Laura Mercier’s Oil Free Foundation in Warm Ivory, next to that is my absolute favorite tinted moisturizer, also by Laura Mercier (I wear the shade Bare Radiance). This is what I wear 95% of the time. Before I put either on, I apply Laura’s Oil Free Primer underneath. It just keeps everything in place. On the far right is Sonia Kashuk’s Perfecting Translucent Illuminator. I had been reading about this stuff for years but finally just recently bought some at Target. It’s just a little shimmer to apply on those days when you’re feeling (or looking) a little drab. It didn’t take me long to see why it’s so popular with all of the magazines.
I used YSL’s Touche Eclat #1 on most days as a concealer but when I’m needing something a little heavier, I use Laura Mercier’s Secret Concealer #1. I also love MAC’s bronzer in Refined Golden and Nars The Multiple in Orgasm. Plus, I use a little loose powder from Laura Mercier and my Beauty Blender. That Beauty Blender is sheer genius…I apply both my foundation and my tinted moisturizer with it.
This right here is my must, must, must product. It’s Urban Decay’s eyeshadow primer. I use it every single day. Apply it before your eye makeup and you’ll never have to worry about smudges or disappearing eye makeup again. The purple is their Original Formula and the gold is Sin. The gold has a champagne color to it and the original is translucent. I love, love, love them!
These are my eye shadows, eye pencils, and blush.
Nars makes the best blush!
I wear either Gaiety or Super Orgasm. They are worth their weight in gold!
And my favorite mascara…MAC’s In Extreme Dimension Lash. I noticed that my sister-in-law’s lashes were looking extra awesome and she said this was her secret. I bought it and fell in love immediately! Mascaras are hard to buy…but this one has proven itself a winner to me!
So…now, you see my makeup stash. I think the important thing is to find a brand that works well with your skin type and that stays in place. For me, that’s a lot of MAC, Nars and Laura Mercier. I also love shopping for makeup at places like Sephora and Nordstrom because they make returns so easy. I hate spending money on makeup only to realize when I get home that it’s not the right color or it doesn’t apply like I had hoped. These two stores are great at letting you return makeup you’ve already tried.
Now…time for a giveaway!! I will be drawing one random winner to receive a $30 Nordstrom gift card (to use on makeup or whatever else your heart desires!). I will draw the winner from my Face Book followers. If you don’t follow me on FB yet, no worries, click here to see my page, like it and you’re entered to win. I will select the winner this Friday morning at 4:30 CST, so you have plenty of time to “like” me. The winner will be announced here and on Face Book that day. Good luck!
Next up: Fifty Two Shades of Shay: Spring Shopping for Kids…it’s that time of year!

Love this post Shay! I am such a make up fanatic too so I'm always looking for new things to try! I love that urban decay eye primer too. It's definitely the best one I've tried so far!
Sheaffer {Pinterest Told Me To} says
Okay…I want to go to Sephora RIGHT NOW. Thank heavens they have online shopping!
Baby Mama Juice says
It's great to read what you love! I'm a non-recovering make-up junkie. I agree that MAC lipstick is the best, though I've started loving Tarte's gloss pencils lately. I posted about the Urban Decay eye primer too. I use it by itself on "au natural" days. I can't wait to try out some of your recommendations!
The Cantelmo Family says
I don't have much of a make up budget so I usually have to end up getting stuff at Target. What is the best thing to splurge on? I keep trying to find good mascara – would it be worth spending a little extra on mascara or something else?
aprilparrish says
Thanks so much for sharing your make-up secrets!!!

I love makeup!! MAC is one of my favorites. I use their foundation, eye shadows, eye liners, and blush. Plus the lip gloss and lipstick! And all of my brushes are from MAC also. I really like I.D. Bare Minerals too. I use their loose powder, mineral veil, and mascara. I liked you on Facebook. Thank you for doing a giveaway.

It's funny you wrote about this. While watching RuPaul's Drag Race…I look at all the pretty make up and I turn to my husband and tell him that I just want to go add MORE make up on…it's all so pretty. Now I am obsessed with brow pencils. 🙂

I love seeing what others use. We share some faves.
BUT I travel so much I have to keep it all together. I'd probably use more of my "unused" colors if I spread them out like you. I'm a lipstick junkie too!
Catrina Guiro says
Thanks for not only some great make-up tips but organizing tips, also! I love how you keep your lipsticks. I keep mine in a separate make-up bag but turned upside down in a drawer would work so much better! Thanks again!
Angela Ellingson says
I am going to have to try some of that! Do you ever wear eye liner?
Tiffany says
Woah. I just realized how un-girly I am compared to you. I own one lipstick — got it for free from Clinique like five years ago… :/ Must go shopping.
Suzanne Riley says
I have been researching foundations lately(time for a new one) and Laura Mercier seems the way to go. Everyone I know loves it and hopefully I will, too!!
Hailey Pocic says
Hi Shay – Thanks for posting about your makeup! I loved reading about your routine. I was just wondering where you apply the Sonia Kashuk Perfecting Translucent Illuminator. Is it for eyes, cheeks, etc.? Thanks so much!
Lauren says
OK. Since I am in this crazy "nesting" phase, I am now totally aware of how boring my make-up drawer is! You just gave me one more project to tackle! 😉

thanks for suggesting the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer! I'm putting it on my wishlist.

Awesome! I liked you on FB too. Didn't know you had a FB page too. I will have to try NARS. Never even heard of it. Can't wait to try the mascara – love mascara. 🙂

I have such a weakness for makeup. I think I have 52 shades of lipstick already but I'm about to add a few more after reading this. Thought I would share one of my favorite products (that I get at Sephora). It is Stila Convertible Color. Every color is great! It is multipurpose, which means you need to buy at least three at a time.

I definitely need makeup help! I tend to not wear much and never know what to pick.

YAY!!! I'm so GLAD you wrote about this 🙂 I'm a new follower of yours and am in the process of OVERHAULING my makeup routine and learning more about products, brushes to use, etc. This definitely helps! I also always seem to have trouble with my eyeshadow creasing up, so the Urban Decay Primer will be something I will have to try!

Wow! That is a LOT of makeup!! My supply fits neatly in a 8x4x2" bag. I'm perfectly happy with being a makeup minimalist. I'd rather spend my money (& time) on other things. Also, not a shoe hoarder or purse junkie. 🙂

I love that you spoke up to say this! You read my mind. So many more important things to spend money on!

I am a makeup kindred spirit with you! I'm not quite up to speed with all the latest and greatest clothes, but I'm a sucker any day for good makeup! So much so that I already made my Target trip the other day and got the the illuminator! Ha! Used to be a Bobbi Brown hoarder and haven't used it in a long time, but love it! Currently using BE, but have had a few Laura Mercier products in the past. Never tried the foundation, etc. Might just have to try it out! BTW, tried a liquid eyeliner for the first time that I LOVE, it's by Lorac…from what else? Sephora .And, what are you using to organize your lipsticks?
Kim Kauffman says
I love makeup so this post is right up my alley! You inspired me to get out to Sephora tonight and buy some new things! I got the Urban Decay Neutrals pallet (love their Naked 2) and a new Smashbox lipgloss. It was a little brighter than I'm used to but I'm loving the added color! Next up has got to be the Urban Decay eyeshadow primer. Fun stuff!

I have some answers to your questions:
1. I use MAC's black kohl eyeliner.
2. I love any shimmery brown or taupe eye shadow.
3. I have pretty normal skin…it would lean more dry than oily.
4. The best splurges in my opinion are primers and mascaras.
5. I apply the illuminizer on my cheeks with my finger tips…just a touch will do it.
6. It takes me about 8 minutes to apply my makeup in the morning.
7. And as for the comments about how I should feel bad about spending money on makeup, I don't. I save my money, invest my money, give to charity, provide for my family and plan for my future…if I want to take $14 and buy some lipstick, that's perfectly fine. I don't spend money on alcohol or fast food, so a little lipstick here and there is a great purchase for me. Plus, I think women need to do little things to make themselves feel better and have a little more pep in their step. And finally…spending money makes the world go round. When we spend money, people get to keep their jobs…the people at Nordstrom, at MAC, at the manufacturer…and so on. Spending money is not a bad thing…it's commerce at its best (in the form of a lipstick!).
Thanks so much for the feedback!
Margie Nowlin says
I'm sorry you had to read the two rude comments not that any of your spending needs to be justified but you adopted an orphan, help us all cook yummy things for family, right now as I type this I am reading one of the great books you recommended, etc. So basically if you want to buy a $14 lipstick it's none of their business you were open because people were asking and once again someone is rude…so predictably sad I'm sorry ?
