And my final tip…I wear sunscreen every single day on my face and every day on my body during the summer and spring. I’m not going to go to all of this trouble and get my skin looking good and then let the sun go and damage it. Whenever you see me with a tan…it’s coming from sort of a bottle. I’m that old lady out by the pool wearing SPF 80 and sitting in the shade…I’m not letting the sun do damage to me.
As for what self-tanners I use…that’s another day and another Shade of Shay :).
I hope this answers all of your skincare questions. I’m never trying to make myself look younger…I just want to look the best I can for the age I am. I also want to protect my skin because this is it…the only skin I get…I need to take care of it.
On Mix and Match Mama today…Pizza Boats…
…they can be lunch, a snack, an appetizer or a little supper. They’re so simple and very yummy!

I was originally drawn to this blog because I'm a huge fan of The Bachelor, but that's not what made me stay. I love this blog so much! I'm a morning news producer and work overnights, and it's tough! But, knowing I have this blog to look forward to in the morning always makes my day! I'm 22 years old, am not married, don't have kids, but this blog still appeals to me because I hope to one day have a family and lifestyle like yours. Thanks for sharing your life and tips with us Shay! You are seriously awesome and a great role model.

I hope you don't get grief for #4 — that's your choice! Some folk decide to spend money on tanning beds and spray tans and that's their choice to spend money on that, too.
That said, I think your first and last points are two of the most important points for taking care of your skin. Thanks for mentioning them!

You WILL get grief…but who cares?? I love all these tips! I am 50 something and wish I had taken care of my skin better!!!! Thanks so much….off to look up all the links!

Great post. I have been toying with the idea of going for a peel. I'll be calling my dermatologist this week. I was also looking for a new eye cream so your recommendation came just in time.
Also, I am really working on getting up a few hours before my kids (for me that is 5:00) to get work completed for my part time job, throw in some laundry, and have my coffee in peace. My treat is reading your posts while I enjoy my coffee and then I get to work 🙂

When I die, my clarisonic mia is coming with me. It is my BFF and I feel no shame in my game. The thing is a miracle worker, and I highly recommend it to anyone.
Love reading about other peoples skin care routine. Always up for something new. Thanks shay!

Your skin is beautiful! I love my clarisonic too! And the beauty blender. I am grateful that my mom doesn't age so I'm hoping this will be true for me too! (I'm in my late 20s) Thanks for the links to all your favorites. Love your blog!

I do next to nothing to take care of my skin, but this is my wake up call! I'm 32 now after all. Guess I will be looking into the clarisonic!

Thanks for the great info Shay! What strength of Rentin A do you use? I have such a problem even after years of using it with it cracking my lips. Just wondered what strength you use. Thanks!

I literally just received my first order of Neocutis creams after my derm suggested them. I'm not going to lie, it was hard to part with all of that $$ without even trying them first. So I am thrilled to read your recommendation. Yay!

Thanks for sharing your tips Shay. I have a suggestion for you because your skin is so important…Jane Iredale. I use her Tinted moisturizer "Dream Tint" and its wonderful! Her line is used by many celebrities as well. Look it up, you'll really love it! XO

Great post, girl — you do have awesome skin!! I just started getting peels about 4 months ago (I've had 3) and I feel like my skin looks and feels so much better! I've tried a few different peels and am still trying to pick out my favorite "go-to" that I'll stick with. I agree that it's worth the hassle and cost! I get mine done at a medical spa I've gone to for years (I also get Botox — ekkk.. Truth!) and they frequently sell great peel packages where you can buy 3 and get 2 free, etc.!
Glad you shared this goodness!!! Happy Tuesday to you and your sweet fam!

Hi Shay, you do have great skin! I'm only 25 but am starting to see aging signs so want to start preventing. Questions- do you spread the retin a/moisturizer combo all over your face or do you spot treat? And- I would love to get a peel but am scared of the redness factor and going to work…did you turn red when you first started getting them? Thanks!

Okay – you are convicting me with this post. I am SOOOOOOOO terrible about taking care of my skin. And I'm not getting any younger. 🙂

I 100% agree about the Mia – mine has transformed my skin. I was so excited (fanatical?) about it on the blog that several friends bought it and everyone loves it.
I love my dermatologist – he is insane in the best of ways. He has a pic of himself with Huey Lewis in his waiting room and the music that he plays is always a hoot – no Muzak!
I am using the R+F that Mel Larson started selling and I really like it!

Yay! Thanks for your post. It's important to be reminded that a lot goes into keeping yourself healthy and looking the best you can at the any age. Once the routine is set the time will feel less, I'm sure!

I loved reading this! I have always been so big on skincare and wondered if I made it too big of a deal, but after reading this I am reaffirmed that it really is so important! I wear sunscreen daily as well but had a question for you, what kind of sunscreen do you wear on your body daily that doesn't smell too strong like sunscreen? Thanks for putting it all out here everyday!

Great post! I have been wanting to try the Mia Clarisonic for some time now, I think I will make the jump and purchase one this year. I have a question for you, I know you swear by these products and absolutely love them, but our budget is a little tight right now – do you have any skin care recommendations that are over the counter or maybe in a lower price bracket? Thanks so much for sharing, it's always fun to see other people's routines!

Love this post!!!! I wish I could afford to do all of this. What price range are the peels/microdermabrasion? You are beautiful! It's working for you!

Thank you for this post! I just turned 27 and for about a year have been feeling the need to start a better skin care regimen, but there is just SO much out there to choose from, so any advice and specific products that people can vouch for are huge lifesavers for me! I have thought over and over about purchasing the clarisonic and I think you just convinced me to! I love reading your blog every day and today just needed to comment because this spoke to me!

Hi Shay,

Thanks for sharing! I love my clarisonic mia (going on 5 years), I get micro every other month and a chemical peel on the other months, I use masks every night on my face — My routine is high-maintenance to say the very least, and I often feel a bit self-conscious about how much time, effort, and MONEY goes into it. I'm 23 years old, and many of my friends just wash/rinse off their faces at night and call it a day. Wish I had the luxury of such simplicity, but I've had problems with acne and excess oil, so I've learned my lesson about trying to cut corners and skip steps or use cheaper products. For the past 5 years I've stuck to strictly Eminence for skincare (pure organic line, highly recommend for sensitive skin or those afraid of any type of chemicals) and Jane Iredale for make-up (pure mineral line).

I've been waiting for this one…your skin really is gorgeous! I wish I'd been as disciplined 10 years ago! I was using my clarisonic 1-2 times per day and after a few months, went in for a facial. The anesthetist said my skin was beyond dehydrated, and when I told her about the clarisonic she practically gasped!! She said 2-3 times per week max?! I loved how my skin felt when I used it regularly, but now I'm paranoid that it's too rough. Have you encountered that? And yes, shoot me your derm's name!!

This is so good! Thanks for sharing. I need to do more for my skin. I got a Clarisonic Aria and switched my makeup to Bare Minerals about the same time back in September and shortly after started breaking out like never before. I haven't used my Clarisonic in 2 months which I am so sad about because it feels so great but I guess my skin is too sensitive. 🙁 I have a dermatologist appointment set up to see if they think it's linked…

I recently ordered a few of your recommendations from your Friday posts…the Grapefruit Lip Scrub and No. 7 Lift and Luminate Night cream. I love them both, and I already feel like I'm doing a little bit more to help my face out. I know I should take better care of my skin, and all these pregnancies do a number on my skin! Loved this post. My first goal would be to get a good eye cream. Thanks for all the tips.

Thanks for sharing! I follow a similar routine but am always on the lookout for new products to try as I've yet to find the "holy grail." I do have a couple of questions though…is your skin naturally dry? I ask because mine is combination and especially with eye cream/face cream, I can't use anything too "rich." Also, if you don't use your clarisonic at night, how do you take off your makeup/cleanse your face at night? Do you use wipes? Or just the Cetaphil? Thanks!

Hi! I love your blog; thank you for sharing! Please disregard if you already got this….my computer crashed and I wasn't sure if it went through before everything froze! Wondering why you switched your tinted moisturizer to BB from Laura Mercier? What are the differences that you have found? Also, do you still use a primer before you apply your makeup? Thank you so much, and I completely agree….what we eat does show on our face! Since cutting back on sugar, limiting processed foods, and increasing my water intake, my skin is much improved!

Awesome post! What brush head do you use on your Clarisonic?
Kelly says
Thanks Shay for your post. I really enjoy reading your posts and have got a lot of things based on your recommendations.
I don't think anyone should ever give anyone grief on how they live their life and spend their money. However it is obvious that you are able to spend a lot more money than the average person. I would love if you would include some recommendations for products that work for a smaller budget. I try to save my money to buy things that I know are worth it, but there is no way I could afford all of them.
Again, thank you for your post!

Thanks for the tips! I am actually going to get my first Chemical Peel next month. I think its the salicylic as well. Can you tell me how much down time you usually require? How long should I expect to be red? You mention you are able to pop in and out – does this mean you go about your day as usual or do you try to time them for end of day?
Mix and Match Mama says
OK…some answers to your questions:
1. I use the "normal" Clarisonic brush head.
2. I remove my makeup with just the Cetaphil and a washcloth at night.
3. I don't think you'll have any down time with a chem peel. The first few times you do it, you'll be a little red after and then 3 or 4 days later, you begin peeling a bit, but it's not bad at all!
4. I can do another post with less expensive products…I have been asked a million times exactly what I use, and this is it. I didn't want to dilute my routine with other products. However, i'll keep that in mind for a future post!

Hi – I had a question about your mom actually. First, your skin does look great, but you are so young! I was wondering what your mom uses on her skin – she has amazing skin and so I was wondering if her skin care regimen was as complex as yours or if she is just lucky to have great genes?? Also, have you noticed a difference since starting the routine that you do now? Thanks 🙂

Shay, thanks so much for sharing! I can't wait to implement:) quick ?: where do you buy your neocutis journee cream? Amazon has best price, but in the reviews, a few people said they got fake products. Wondering best place to buy it for most reasonable price?

I've been debating about a clarisonic for so long. Your post gave me the push I needed to just do it. Off to ulta I went and came home with the cutest pink and white one. I'm excited to see the difference it makes! (The cleaning, not the pink and white color. Although, ithe cute color doesn't hurt.) 😉

I honestly felt like a kid at christmas yesterday I am almost 39! but my mom and I went to Ulta yesterday and they were having a sale starting today and the woman let us get the Mia 2 in a retiring color for 125. I was so excited. So i let it charge for 24 hours and I just used it!!! i am in LOVE! i look younger already:) i am sure its all in my head…but can you tell me – when you use it do the bristles not even really look like they are moving? I want to make sure I am doing it right. Thank you! Anyone who is a pro can fill me in:)

Love this! Your skin is always radiant! Do you use anything special on your decolletage? I just noticed that at almost 35 years old that mine is starting to look a little wrinkly and saggy and I DO NOT WANT TURKEY NECK 🙂 I went to sephora and ulta to look at reviews and couldn't find anything that I felt comfortable ordering. Any help would be appreciated!
Esther says
Love this! Your skin is always radiant. Question though – do you do anything special for your decollete area? I just noticed mine starting to wrinkle a bit (I'll be 35 this summer) and I am so hoping I don't get turkey neck! I've researched at sephora and ulta but the reviews were conflicting. Thanks for sharing your routine!!!

Sorry one more question 🙂 I used to have skin much like yours but then my thyroid med has messed it all up! So trying new stuff. I am very interested in starting back up with my Retin A (used it through high school and college…dont know why I stopped)…but am afraid of the "uglies" that supposedly occur when you start using it (like breaking out MORE, or major flake y skin)….did you experience any of that? What strength/brand do you use? and finally…do you have to avoid during pregnancy (not preggers yet but its hopefully in the cards in a year or so). Thanks! xoxo
Mix and Match Mama says
I use the 1% Retin A. Sometimes, it will cause my dry skin to flake but I think the chem peels and microderm help ward that off a lot! That stuff is gold!

What shade of concealer did you get? Wow, there are a lot of choices! 🙂

I'm late reading the comments to your skin care post. I am much older than you and have had problem skin for years.. Lately its really bothered me. With that taken care of I am seeing the PA for cosmetic treatments and am loving it. I'm having some ED treatments and then in a few weeks laser treatments.. might be having a series of both of those. Believe it or not.. I am going to Dr Suzan Obagi's office.. I don't see her but some of her associates and I am using some of her products.. Pretty amazing.
