Well…a few weeks ago, I saw this image on Pinterest and an entire post was born.
Love. I am in in love with everything about this picture. I love the distressed jeans, the gold jewelry, the navy jacket, the bangles, the hair, the brown bag, the polka dot shirt and the pop of color with the yellow. One little pop of color and the entire outfit comes alive.
Today’s post is all about little pops…it doesn’t take much to turn basic into brilliant and boring into fabulous! I’m going to show you my favorite little pops of neon and bright colors for spring…from nail polish and tanks to bags and scarves…and more!
I’ve been looking everywhere for us some little pops…
…it’s amazing how simple it is to add a pop into your basic style.
First up…
…tanks.
I love wearing tanks under my tops. It adds an extra layer of interest to any look…and sometimes, a little pop of color. I found this bright tank at Old Navy and love it! In my opinion, Old Navy and Gap have the best tanks because they’re longer (perfect for layering) and wash and dry beautifully. Add a little pop with a bright tank…
Any of these tanks under a basic sweater or shirt will instantly add that fun pop of color.
And for the rest of the above outfit, click on the item name: Jeans, necklace, military jacket, sweater, leopard flats.
Goodness…nothing could be simpler than adding a bright pop of color to your nails to jazz you up a bit…
…I just found this image off of Pinterest…but geez…how happy do those colors make you? You know that I’m a nail polish junkie. And one of the reasons I am is because it’s amazing how a little polish can instantly elevate whatever you have on (even gym clothes!).
This is my own personal collection from my Fifty Two Shades of Shay: Nail Polish post :). Just a little pop of color on your toes and fingers and you’re good to go.
I was talking to Sheaffer about how I was looking for pops of color everywhere and she said I needed to look at Rebecca Minkoff’s new spring/summer bags at Nordstrom. Sheaffer, knowing what a color crazy person I am, said she knew the bright Minkoff bags would thrill me. And she was right. So right. I love them all!
Look at those fun colors! I love that there are not just totes but crossbody bags too. A great bag can be used every day and goes with everything…you will definitely pop with these babies! Here are a few of my faves…
Neon Pink Tote (in 7 other colors!), Minty Crossbody Bag (in 3 other colors), Orange Crossbody (in 2 other colors), Studded Tote
I know what you’re thinking? A bright pink bag, really? Yes. Whether you’re wearing shorts and a tank or your yoga clothes…a bright bag will instantly make you look a little more pulled together. Just look…
…seriously, what did we do before Pinterest? And Sheaffer?
Thank you Sheaffer for knowing exactly where I needed to look for fun colored bags…I love them all :).
The next place I’m poppin’…scarves.
Now that’s simple. We just need a few bright scarves to brighten up our basics. Here you go…
Hello floral fun!
This fun pink scarf is under $30 and available in 13 other colors!
And this turquoise infinity scarf just says happy.
Now…we have discussed this before. We have discussed it in great length actually…when I die, I would like to be buried in shorts. Not just any shorts, I would like to be buried in bright colored shorts (with tall wedges, an armful of bangles and beachy hair…but I digress).
I have probably discussed my love of J Crew shorts on this blog no less than 5,896 times. And with spring and summer just around the corner, you can go ahead and prepare yourself for 18,236 pictures of me wearing their bright colored shorts. They are my favorite. I love them. They’re wonderful. And they add just the right amount of pop to anything.
I love these shorts. I love them. I always wear the 3″ in-seam but it does come 4, 5, 7 and 9 inch too! No matter how old you are, how tall you are, how small you are…no matter what, if you need a pair of fun and bright colored shorts…these are my absolute favorites! And they come in so many great colors! Love, love, love these!
And my last pop…
…I just love a little pop of color in my earrings. Sigh. I love my blue earrings…
…and my green ones too. I pretty much wear them every day. Just that little pop and look how my two boring outfits are a little more interesting.
Little pops of color. I’m going to spend my weekend trying to find more ways to make my basics pop.
Speaking of popping…dinner tonight…
…like a Jalapeno Popper but in a yummy (and simple) casserole.
Happy Friday friends!

I just want you to know that I woke up at 5:30 am this morning bc I have a meeting at 7:00. I checked the blog, no new post. So I waited and waited till 6 (in atlanta!) And I can now officially get out of bed and get ready because I have read the post for today. Your blog is a part of my routine. I'd be lost and my day would be imcomplete without it!
Now I'm going to go wear something that makes me "POP! POP! POP!"

It's so dreary in the Midwest with what seems this eternal winter… but you reminded me to keep looking forward to the colour that comes with spring!
Sheaffer {Pinterest Told Me To} says
Well, I need more POPS in my life! Like yesterday. I need a poppin' bag, I need a poppin' scarf, I need a poppin' tank. I WANT TO BE POPPIN'! And just fyi, I think I just created a new catch phrase.

I'm reading this quietly in the bedroom while Tab is still sleeping, but in my head I'm repeating over, "Pop, POP, pop". Hahahaha!!!! Hope that makes sense b/c it's really funny to me!!

Are the J Crew outlet shorts the same as the regular store?
Narci says
I love all of this!! The pops of color are perfect for February. I saw a pink Kate Spade purse at Nordstom yesterday–it was so pretty–the sales lady and I oohed and aahed over it for 10 minutes! Now I think that I need it! 😉
Alison @ Get Your Pretty On says
A bright purse just went on my spring wish list! Gosh, I love spring. It makes me happy to get dressed again.
Meagan @ The Clanahan Fam says
LOVE those "pop" purses! Last year was the first year that I jumped out of my tan/cognac/black/boring purse phase and got a bright green MK one. It just makes me happy. I think I need a new one 🙂 And your jcrew short segment? Aghhh I can't wait until spring to break out my collection. I seriously have a whole drawer of those. I don't think my husband knows that and he would probably freak 🙂
Michelle Nobbe says
LOVE this POPPIN post!! I have had my eye on several purses that will POP, so I think I might just have to get one because Shay said we all need more POP!! Thank you for your awesome posts!
Mix and Match Mama says
The outlet shorts are not the same. They are made from a different material (thinner) and don't wash and wear as well. I bought two pairs before I realized that.
Paula says
I am big on the tank top layering!
Gotta get a new handbag for sure!
Lauren and Eddie says
I LOVE the Stella and Dot earrings but I am so worried they're going to stretch my ear lobes they're so darn heavy! I wish they'd make a pair that was exactly the same but a little lighter. I wear mine all the time, too!
Sherrie says
Hi Shay,
This post is great. I have never tried JCrew shorts but I will have to check them out. With regard to Old Navy tanks, do they wash/wear well? I am usually a tall small in everything at GAP, do you recommend a small as well in Old Navy? Thanks as always!
Ashley @ Fancy Ashley says
Oh how I LOVE pops of color!!! LOVE!!! Yet another reason we are soul sisters, I am obsessed with the 3 inch J.Crew shorts! My neon pink are my absolute favorite!!!!! I always have fun colors on my nails too! Then every time I look at my hands, the color and glitter on my nails make me smile! Happy Friday!!!! XOXO!

Stella & Dot has some great bags with Pop this season!
Mix and Match Mama says
If you're a small in Gap tanks, you'll be a small in Old Navy too! They wash and wear so well!
Angela Ellingson says
I really want those JCrew shorts!! If you had to guess, do you think the 3 inch shorts would look too short on someone who is 5'8"? They look great on you!!!
Amie says
Thank you for the suggestion on the tanks. I have been looking for longer ones to layer but they are hard to find.
Melissa says
I love the Essie pink color in your POP collage. Do you know what it is called?

Shay – I just have to let you know how much your and Sheaffer's posts influence my life…..
Yesterday, I bought the robe you and Catherine were given for Christmas from Nordstrom and last night my daughter and I made Pizza Boats together for dinner. She loved them! And so did I.

J Crew shorts are simply the best!!!

That first image totally looks like an outfit you would put together! I often try to put a pop of color with my jewelry.

Great post! I love that you added nail polish to your list too! It's one of the easiest and sometimes cheapest ways to really give yourself that little extra oomph. I really need to go paint my nails now!

I received my first Toms ever in the mail! Oh my…LOVE!
I know you have the camo. Do you have more?
Anonymous says
Shay – are you wearing the exact camo jacket that you linked to on the Nordstrom website? If so, it looks cuter in the photo you took than it does on the website. I want to order one if it is the same one you are wearing. Please let me know. Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! That is the exact jacket!! I bought it a few weeks ago and have been wearing it all the time! I'm wearing a small!
Anonymous says
Okay. Thanks Shay! Nordstrom needs to be using your photos. 🙂 I am going to order that jacket. Love it on you!!!
Cathy says
So I see your first pic in this post and I think "Hmm..that would be cute with my military jacket. Lo and behold, you post the pic later in your post.

Just wondering if you've ever done a post on dresses. I rarely see you wear them.
Ruthie says
Hi Shay 🙂
Love this post – I'm looking forward to spring! Can you comment on something for me? I'm wondering if you every bought the 3 inch chino shorts from J Crew Factory, and if they are the same or at least very similar? The pricing is tempting, but I am concerned about fit and quality (I bought some solid T's from Factory once before and they were awful-fitting, shapeless, and felt very cheaply made). Would love any advice you can offer. Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
I have bought the Factory shorts before and they're just not the same. The material is thinner than the material on the J Crew shorts. They also wrinkled really easily.
And as for dresses, I'm a separates person. I really don't ever wear dresses, more skirts and tops. 🙂
Karly says
I love the JCrew shorts! A few 'pop' colors were on mega sale! I bought 2 pairs for post baby motivation this spring:-) Can't beat $19.99 then 40% off!!!
