2. Volunteer at school. This year, I’m volunteering every Friday morning and then on some Mondays too. I love that I get to walk the kiddos to school on Fridays and then go inside with them to volunteer. I’m going to commit to keep this goal for the rest of the year. (Bonus, their school makes it really convenient for bringing siblings, so Ashby has been helping too!)
3. Host dinner for one family. We invited the McAnallys over for dinner this month :). I love having those five over! We laughed, we talked, we watched the craziness fly by as the six kids ran around…it was so much fun!
4. Clean, sort and donate clothes. Done. Whew. That’s always a lot of work but good to do!
5. Visit the eye doctor. Did it! I went in and had my first full eye exam. My doctor said that at this time, I don’t need glasses (woohoo!). He said probably the two exams that my general physician performed weren’t exactly correct (because I failed both of those). I’m super glad that I went and now…I need to take my kids.
…this made me smile :).
I went back and rounded up some of my favorite things from months past for this month. Happy (almost!) October!
1. Write notes of encouragement. I know there are people in my life that could use a little bit of encouragement…maybe a Bible verse or quote too. I’m going to really make an effort to send some notes this month.
2. Have 3 special nights each week. This idea came from one of you guys and over the summer, we did a great job maintaining this every week…but in September, we failed. Between baseball games and dance on some evenings, we did not have our special time. This month, on Mondays, it will be Kensington’s turn, Tuesday is Smith and Wednesday is Ashby. The two other kids will go to bed at their normal time and then the “special” kid gets to stay up 30 minutes later and Andrew and I will do whatever that kiddo wants. Sometimes we craft, sometimes, we read books, we play lots of games and other stuff too. ‘Tis the month of special time!
3. Watch extra kids. I am going to volunteer to watch some extra kiddos this month for my friends. During the day, it’s easy for me to watch a kid or two while my friends run an errand/visit the doctor/go to an appointment or whatnot.
4. Have another skin check. Every six months, I’m getting a skin check! If you haven’t had one in a while, make your appointment too! Ain’t no one want to mess around with skin cancer.
5. Pray more for others. My prayer post over the summer was my favorite post to date. I was so overwhelmed by the people who both needed prayer and who stepped up to pray. I really can’t even articulate how moved I was by the entire thing. This month, if you need prayer, please comment. I know so many of you out there would love to pray over these requests with me. I’m praying for you ladies. I don’t know what’s going on in your lives, but I know that I would love to pray for you.
That’s October.
One last thing…we’re also going to check several things off of our fall bucket list this month too :).
Dinner tonight should be on your October goals…
I’m not quite sure you could make anything more family friendly. Your fam is going to LOVE this!
Don’t forget that What’s Up Wednesday is TOMORROW!

I always love reading your goal posts! I gotta tell ya, I made the sloppy joe pot pies for me and my husband last night and we LOVED them! I'll be making them again soon! I agree with the prayer post, it was so overwhelming but it just shows how we all need to bound together in prayer for one another.

My husband and I are starting the process of getting approved to be foster parents. The whole process is invasive and scary. I'm terrified that we will be given these babies to care for and have them taken away. That is an inevitable fact of foster care. This is something God has put on my heart for a long time. It feels like he is literally pushing me on my back yelling, "You need to do this!". So, prayers that we are following God's plan would be so appreciated.
Erika Slaughter says
Kate, that's awesome!! We have a friend going through the same thing and they're eagerly awaiting the call! I'll be praying for you guys!!
Shay…those fall pictures of your kids are so cute!! I used to be a summer girl but you're rubbing off on me. Bring on the pumpkins!!!
I Like Ike says
Kate, that's AMAZING! Fostering is so near and dear to my heart. No doubt God will give you the supernatural strength to pour love into those children who so desperately need it! He will also give you the strength to let them go when it's time. I pray your love just multiplies! Thank you for answering His call!! A group of us are working hard in my local community to bring The Call to our area. It's an organization that focuses primarily on assisting foster parents, from helping with the training and streamlining the paperwork to offering a free store wobt all the items needed when you take on a new child: diapers, formula, clothes, toys for all ages, ect. We'll also help with Christmas and vacations. I'm super excited about it. Foster parents are precious to me. I encourage you to see if their is a similar group in your area to come along side y'all.
Praying for your family!!

Me! Me! I'm Erika and Shay's friend at thr tail end of certification – just waiting on the call! I am so glad that you are obeying that tug on your heart. Fostering is scary but so worth it. Please email me meaganruse@gmail.com if you have any questions. I will be praying for you as you enter this journey.
Jen says
We have been foster parents for a couple years now. God has taught me to live by faith, not fear. Faith that he has brought these kids for a season and faith that He loves them more than I ever could. It is hard to say goodbye but as I tell my bio kids, when this happens God has someone else He needs us to love. I will pray for both of you as you finish the process and wait for the call. Blessings.
Stacy says
We are foster parents too!! Its not an easy journey but it is a blessing!! Praying for you guys as you await the call and in the journey to come! We adopted our first placement in May and are seriously considering taking another placement soon for possible adoption. It's not something that just anybody can go through because it can be so hard but I'm so thankful we took the leap and that God led us down this path!

Please pray for my cousin!
She beat breast cancer at 26 and got married last weekend (hooray!) but a few weeks ago got the bad news that it had spread to her brain. Not sure of treatment yet, and boy does she need prayers from all over. They are an amazing couple who have battled so much in their time together. Your post of your friend Manda struck a chord and miracles do happen. We are hoping for one!

I'm sorry to hear this! I have a childhood friend who when through a similar situation–found out she had an inoperable brain tumor a month after getting married. Many prayers for your cousin and her team of doctors!

There are so many people who are suffering and need prayers…sick, heartbroken, lost. It seems selfish to ask for prayers for my husband and I, but we are newlyweds and trying to conceive our first child. We know it happens at a different rate for everyone but our age (mid-30s) puts the pressure on a bit. Please pray it is God's will for us to have a baby! You inspire me everyday to pray more for others. Your blog is a bright spot in my morning!

No prayer is selfish! God tell us to cast ALL our cares upon Him! (1 Peter 5:7) Praying for you both.

Such great goals!
Please pray for our family, in particular my daughter Carmyn. She has Angelman Syndrome. Over the last year she has started toe walking. This is affecting her balance and she falls a lot. The doctor said she has lost the ability to flatten her feet and now needs surgery. Catch is he said she will likely need a repeat surgery because of her age. Two, she has to be braced 12 plus hours a day until she is done growing. That will be 8 plus years. She hates braces. She is non verbal and can't express herself, which breaks my heart. I am not even certain she understands at all.
We could opt to do nothing, but she will become completely immobile & feet deformed. Whole thing stinks. I hate it for her, plus I have 3 other children. Please pray as we move forward we make the right choice and right surgeon. That God will provide the details.

I just don't go. This time of year, I'm lucky if I make it twice (sometimes, only once). I try not to put pressure on myself about it. I don't want to miss life because I'm at the gym!

Please pray for a wonderful client of mine. She was hit by a car while biking in Chicago. She is currently in an induced coma to help brain swelling go down. At this point, doctors don't know the extent of permanent damage. She is an amazing woman. I don't know her that well, but she has the most fun and bubbly spirit. She has always helped others. She was working full time, taking care of her 2 kids along with her husband, going back to school, and is really into running. Her family is staying strong, but it's one of the scariest times of their lives. She's so strong, so we have high hopes for her! Thank you.

Love me some fall! I don't have a request, but a praise. I want you ladies to know that God WILL answer your prayers, it won't be on your time, but He does answer! I have had a very broken relationship with my brother and his family for about 10 years. It has been awful and so straining. God has completely restored this relationship to the point of my sister-in-law asking for forgiveness for her past behavior. I have prayed every.single.day for 5 years for this, and I can't even tell you what this feels like! We are going to be spending the holidays with them, I feel like I've won the lottery…:) So please remember He WILL answer your prayers, there just might be a lot of in between stuff that needs to get figured out first!

Shay, I look forward to your posts every day! Prayer request – my health. I'm a mother of 2 young children and I'm battling generalized anxiety. It's actually been diagnosed – not just a "feeling" that I have. I know it seems minor, but it's a struggle every day and I don't want to have to be medicated. I haven't felt "good" or like myself in over 8 months. I'm trying so hard to trust God's plan in all of this, but it's just hard. Your prayers and those of your readers are certainly appreciated.
Brady Wilhelm says
This might sound crazy and be totally irrelevant to your situation, but I thought I'd share my experience! I had a baby and had very, VERY mild post partum depression for just about two months. 18 months later, I had another baby and for almost 1 1/2 years after I had her, I just didn't feel like myself. I wasn't depressed or anxious, I just wasn't happy. I loved my husband and kids, but I wasn't excited about anything or enjoying life. Another friend was going through the same thing and said she noticed after stopping birth control that she felt better. So I did the same. And I feel like a completely different person! It truly changed my life. I went back on birth control 6 weeks after having my daughter and never thought twice about it. But once I was off of it, I could tell SUCH a difference. I think mixing all the hormones of birth control with what was most likely another very mild case of post partum just totally messed me up! Of course, I have no clue if you're on birth control and not every situation is the same, so it may not affect you the way it did me, but I'll be praying for your anxiety to go away and for you to have peace!
Mallory says
That is not a minor thing! I've had problems with anxiety since I was a child, officially diagnosed at 13. Sometimes it is still a total struggle for me and affects me sometimes getting out of bed some days. Praying for you!

Please pray for my future husband and myself. We have a vision for our future wedding but unfortunately my parents do not agree with it unless it is in their church/denomination. We would both really love their support and blessing as we get married. I fear that it will ruin my relationship with my mom for a period of time during what should be a very exciting time in my life. We both love our relationship with God and stride to walk by faith. We would like to be apart of a church community that clicks for us and one that we can grow with. Thank you for your prayers! I will be praying for everyone as well!
Mallory says
A good friend of mine is going through this because she married a man in January that her parents said was going to bring her to hell simply because he wasn't part of their ultra conservative denomination. They have, unfortunately, cut her out of their lives and are keeping her from her six younger siblings. I am praying for your parents' hearts to be softened so they can be with you during this very exciting time, and that you will have peace, joy, and happiness as you get closer to your wedding.

Please pray for my son that has a history of substance abuse issues. This is every parents night mare and living hell!! For the past 19 months he has dealt with serious health issues. Saturday he was admitted to the hospital for the second time since July. Please pray for him to maintain inner strength in his daily battle to remain drug free and for God to lay his healing hands upon him. I am a retired Social Worker and have the upmost respect for you and your husband choosing to adopt a special needs child. It is obvious that Ashby is happy and thriving in such a loving environment. She is absolutely adorable and full of so much personality. May God continue to bless you and your family. You and I have something in common. My father was a State Farm insurance agent for over 30 years. My mother assisted him at his office so the company has been a part of my life since 1954.

Just reading your comment and wanted to let you know that I am putting your family in my prayers. We lost my brother in 2014 to his substance abuse and I understand how it can absolutely wreck a family. I strongly believe in recovery and I am believing that your son will get through this and be able to use his story to better others. Know that you guys aren't alone in the substance abuse battle and many families are fighting right along side with you!

I hesitated posting a comment the last time you asked for prayer requests, because I've been so private about our infertility struggles. But I am starting to gain a little courage, and I thought this might be a good starting point. My husband and I have had 4 unsuccessful rounds of treatment, and are currently beginning the 2nd week of the 2 week waiting period to see if this round worked. We had a consult yesterday to discuss IVF, because if this round doesn't work, we will begin that process as early as next week. It's overwhelming, frustrating, disappointing, etc… Please pray for strength for both my husband and I in the coming weeks.

I am so sorry to hear about your struggles with infertility! My husband and I have been going through the same thing and it's rough. We did 5 rounds of IUI's with no success and are currently in the middle of doing our shots for our 1st round of IVF. We were the same way with not wanting to tell anybody but decided we needed the prayers and support of our family and friends before starting IVF. Infertility is an extremely emotional roller coaster. Best of luck to you and your husband! I hope we both get pregnant soon! 🙂

My favorite color is October too! Can I please ask you to pray for my husband and I's marriage? He has moved out of our house and it has been really hard on me and my two little boys. God is in the miracle business and I would love to have a restored relationship with Dustin and for his heart to soften. I do not want a divorce or a legal seperation.

My favorite color is orange! It always has been. Can you pray for me? I have a biopsy tomorrow at 10:30 EST to determine whether or not I have thyroid cancer. This is the fourth time I've had tumors, but this is the first time since I moved 500+ miles from my family for grad school (I'm 23). I'm really nervous about the procedure, but then it'll take a week to two weeks for results, and I have diagnosed anxiety, so that is not going to be easy on me, either. Thank you.

We just welcomed baby #2 ten weeks ago. I know we have so much for which to be grateful…so much so that I almost didn't comment here. However, I have not been feeling much joy lately. I feel guilty about this. Our new little one cries a lot and is often overly tired because I have to awaken him from naps to pick up older brother from pre school. Pediatrician says he's fine due to weight gain, etc but I think there are some issues with gas, reflux, etc that are making him very uncomfortable – hence all the crying. I feel like I'm in over my head. I'm wanting to express much more patience, much more joy, and much less frustration. Also, deeply wanting to feel God's care and express more grace, poise, and quietude in the moments that challenge me most (when both kids are screaming at once and I feel frazzled, when our new baby cries extremely in places where I can't do anything about it – like when I'm driving on the highway at 60 MPH, during overnight awakenings for nursing when I'm especially exhausted). Also wanting to feel more harmony restored in our household and between my husband and me as we navigate the new normal. I know there are so many out there struggling with infertility, adoption disappointments, pregnancy loss, and more and I trust that my post here will not come across as insensitive to others' experiences. Thanks, and God bless.
Mallory says
Just because other people have their own "worse" struggles, that doesn't make you insensitive for sharing yours. Your feelings are very real, and it's okay! I'm praying for you and your family to find harmony, for you to feel strength and peace in your new role as a mom of two, and that you will find people to support you through this tough time.

Shay, I was going to add my father to the prayer list, as he's battling bladder cancer and it's been very difficult for the last few months. I love your monthly goals! I would love it if you could pray for me and my family and if anyone out there could pray for us… We are expecting twin boys and at the anatomy scan Baby A (August) was given a preliminary diagnosis of two clubbed feet. We go in for another scan in a week or two to confirm the diagnosis. We have had genetic screenings and other tests that showed no chromosomal abnormalities or any other genetic issues, so we are confident that if he does in fact have clubbed feet it is an isolated orthopedic issue. Either way, we would appreciate prayers for healing for our baby boy and prayers that our team of doctors will be able to do whatever is necessary to give our little man a normal start in life. Thank you so much for offering prayers again this month, we could really use them!

I'm asking prayers for my husband. He and I have been married for 5 years and we have a 4 year old daughter. About 2 years ago, he finished up 4 years in the Marines and after 2 deployments and many conversations together, he felt that he no longer believed in God. In the past 2 years, I have watched him struggle so much with physical injuries related to his deployments and his unbelief has only become more adamant. My daughter and I found a great church in our area about a year and a half ago, but my husband refuses to go and even (politely) refused to attend my baptism. I know that God desires all of his children to come to know him and he also desires for us to have intimacy and love in our marriage through him and this is what I pray for my husband.
Denise Ross says
Shay thankyou for another prayer requests month. I loved the last one and prayed over everyone on there and the ones who didn't wish to list their requests. I'm doing the same this month. We all have our trials and for each of us, they are hard no matter what they are, but remember our God is bigger than all our challenges and we can still hope sometimes desperately, in Him. We can be assured He is with us and what is meant to hurt us, God will turn out for our good. May we each find rest in Him and cling to His promises. Praying for each of you, much love and hugs from Australia xx

Hi Shay, I love the prayer requests, and will be praying for others in the comments each day, too. What a great idea and way to uplift each other! I just found out I'm pregnant with my second child, and would appreciate prayers for a healthy baby and healthy pregnancy (I've been struggling with some nausea and fatigue lately and just hope to feel better so I can be fully present each day with my 2 year old). Thank you! xo

Hi Shay,
I'm not sure if your still checking this post but my family needs some big praying right now. My Aunt who is the rock of our family attempted suicide on Wednesday night. She was found just in time and they were able to bring her back and she is in ICU right now and is expected to make a full physical recovery. I'm asking for prayers for her mental health to be healed as well and that our family can help her navigate this. We are all in shock and she is the last person I would have ever thought would try to take her life. I just pray she knows how needed and loved she is. Also I'm pregnant and it is hard to manage my emotions and try to enjoy the pregnancy and my own little family. Thanks you

Hi Shay,
I'd like to ask for prayers for my husband and I as we start our IVF cycle this time next week! I can't believe we are here. We are feeling all sorts of things- excitement, anxiousness, and especially hope! Please pray for my health and safety, wisdom for our doctor and nurses, patience and strength, and a healthy baby to come from this! Hi Shay, I love your blog and food blog. Always something fun on them. I have 2 prayer requests… one that my husband gets into the schooling for his army career. The second prayer request is to conceive a second child. It took us two long years to conceive our son and that was a fluke in itself (god is great!). We are at a year and a half trying for our second and as you know this journey is tiring. Thank you so much for even taking prayer requests. I plan to add a few people from this list to my own prayer list as well. Thanks again. Jenna

Hi Shaty (and your gorgeous readers),
It's taken me a while to get the confidence up to post on this prayer list. My prayer request is like so many others, my husband and I are praying for children. We are both separately medically infertile (due to previous treatments/surgeries etc) but we want so desperately to be parents. Here in Australia both domestic and international adopting is near on impossible. We just pray that we are blessed with a child to love on soon.

Hi Shay (and readers), Please pray for me. I moved to central Florida (Orlando area) 6 weeks ago. I've always been EXTREMELY close to my family (it's me, my parents, my two brothers, their wives and my 3 nephews)… I moved from North Alabama, so that is about a 10-11 hour drive. Shay, you even planned a Disney World trip for me and my mom in March 2014 at the Wilderness Lodge for my birthday! Anyway, I moved to Florida because of a guy (a wonderful man and luckily I got two great jobs right off the bat) but my family disagrees with my choices and are not speaking to me. It absolutely breaks my heart because I truly feel like I don't have a family anymore. My nephews (the two older ones, Bradley and Drew, ages 15 and 12) aren't even allowed to speak to me, I'm blocked from their phones..this breaks my heart…. I have gone to every school play, ballgame, birthday party, school event, lunch, volunteered at their schools..they were really like my own kids..i even took them to church and the 12 year old got saved at VBS this summer…. and now they all hate me. I don't know what to do. I'm completely heartbroken and with the holidays coming up, I can't even think about it without crying because I have never missed a holiday with my family. I even went to college an hour away so that I would be close to my family. I love living in florida and it has ALWAYS been my dream to live by Disney and they know that, but they aren't happy that I left and I also left the family business. Please pray… I don't even know what to ask you to pray for specifically… maybe that I can talk to my nephews or that my parents will forgive me for moving and will ask forgiveness from me for the way they've treated me? If anyone has any advice, my email is Rachel.tapscott@gmail.com. Bless all of you. Thanks so much for reading this. I feel like I have no one here and it is nice to know that someone out there might be praying for me.

Hi Shay,
I love keeping up with your blog! I would really appreciate some prayer. I am 13 weeks pregnant with my first baby 🙂 And I am a Type 1 diabetic. My pregnancy is considered high-risk and I have many care providers that I see on the regular which is awesome. Although I am very diligent in caring for myself, there are many unpredictable swings – both highs and lows, with my sugar levels. Having high blood sugars could have negative effects on the baby and as much as I try to minimize that, it still happens. I'm learning to trust God – to know that He is greater still than my condition and He can allow me to have a healthy baby. But prayer would be appreciated, that my pregnancy will be healthy and that we will be able to welcome a healthy baby into our family! Also, that nothing bad (seizures, unconsciousness) will happen to me especially at my job as a third grade teacher, and that I will feel the warning signs of a low blood sugar early on. Thank you so much!!!

Shay I love your blog! I am going through fertility struggles myself and reading your story and seeing so many others commenting who are going through the same thing makes this difficult process much less lonely! Just had a 4th failed IUI so asking for prayers as we start another round with new medications. Praying and sending hope to all others in the same boat- I am already mommy to a sweet girl conceived through IUI so it does work!!!

Shay, thank you for this reminder to pray for others! You blog/life is a great example for others and has been a huge encouragement for me. I want you to know I am praying for Ashby. I would like to ask you to pray for my dad. He found out this week that he would need open heart surgery by the end of the year. He is a wonderful man of God. We are believing for a healing miracle. Please pray for him as he is scheduled for surgery Monday Nov. 30th! It happened so sudden but we are just trusting the Lord. God bless you and your family. Laura
