It’s Stranded!
One Wednesday a month, Erika and I host a link up where we share 3 random things we would take with us on a deserted island. They’re silly, funny, totally lighthearted things that we would hope to have with us should we ever be you know…stranded.
So far, we’ve had these topics…
What 3 medicine cabinet items would you take?
What 3 Netflix series would you take?
What three famous people would you take?
And today…what three types of Halloween candy would you take?
#becauseitsoctober
So…I thought. I pondered. I debated in my head. I’m going to be honest, I’m not a real candy person. Give me all the pie, cobbler and brownies too…but candy has never really been my thing. There is one exception to the rule and that is my obvious first choice…English Toffee.
Me eating an English toffee cookie in Nantucket.
We trick or treat with the same big group of friends every year…
…and I shamelessly beg, bribe and borrow/steal their Heath bars (which is the closest thing you get on Halloween night). Toffee is my love language. I love toffee. Give me all the toffee. English toffee, you would be with me on that island.
And side note, if you love toffee too, then you should make one of my toffee recipes:
TOFFEE CRUNCH PIE
GINGERSNAP TOFFEE CHRISTMAS CRUNCH
TOFFEE COFFEE BROWNIES
CHOCOLATE TOFFEE BARS
STICKY TOFFEE BUNDT CAKE
TOFFEE CRUNCH BUNDT CAKE
So, after toffee, I had to think long and hard and decided I would need the protein on the island, so I picked…
…because peanut butter cups are protein, right? #itellmyselfthatsometimes
Whenever I’m tired of fish, coconut and leaves on the island, I’ll pull out a peanut butter cup. #blessedness
Okay, am I the only one who thinks the holiday peanut butter cups are just so much better than the regular ones??? The pumpkin/heart/Christmas tree cups have way more peanut butter and (I know this is weird), but I think they’re better without the ridges around the top. Is that weird? Am I the only one? Why don’t they make the big puffy ridge-less ones year around? Sigh.
If you love a good peanut butter and chocolate recipe, I have you covered there too:
PEANUT BUTTER CUP S’MORES
BANANA CUPCAKES WITH PEANUT BUTTER CREAM CHEESE FROSTING
PEANUT BUTTER CHOCOLATE CHIP CHEESECAKE
CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER BARS
And then my third choice is just so random. I can’t really explain it, but I love…
…Hot Tamales.
Yes ma’am. Give me those little red pieces of spicy heaven and I’m so happy.
Okay, what three pieces of candy would you want to take on a deserted island??? If you blogged, link up! If you didn’t, just comment and tell me. I don’t know why, but I find this so interesting ;).
Next time on Stranded…What 3 types of outerwear would you take?
And to see our other topics, look below…
Happy Hump Day!
Elizabeth says
There is nothing better than a Reese’s! I think I would add something else sweet.. maybe skittles, or Starbursts?!

I completely agree-the pumpkins, trees, and eggs taste way better. I also think they’re bigger so that helps too! Ha!
Carrie says
I agree on the Reeses holiday edition being better than the regular. I also like the minis better than the regular size. 🙂
Leslie says
Oh my goodness! You are SO right about the holiday Reeses! The pumpkins, Christmas trees, and Easter eggs are the bomb, and I normally don’t even like the normal Reeses. My three types of candy that I would have to bring are those
Ferrero Rocher chocolates, Sour Punch Straws, and Kit Kats. Bring on delicious Halloween candy!

Even better than Heath bars?? Skor bars!!

I have an unnatural love for mellowcreme pumpkins this time of the year. It grosses a lot of people out, but more for me!

Beth says
I totally agree with you! I’m not a candy gal, but I will enjoy a PB cup and the holiday ones for some reason taste way better!!!
emily @ a little bit of emily says
That is such a tough one! So many good candies out there. I think the Dark Chocolate “Midnight” Milky Ways would be a must, Skittles for something fruity and either white chocolate Kit Kats or little Reeses cups!
Sarah says
Love this post!! I’m also a huge toffee fan and like you, I’m not big on other candy except Reeses! M&M’s are also delicious, but I’d never buy them at the store or anything. I much prefer baked goods 🙂
Hope you have a wonderful day!!

Amy Heinl says
I toi think the shaoed Reeses are way better than the others. My choices would be Hershey Bar with Almonds, Payday bar, and a Clark Bar
Sheaffer says
100% YES! Get rid of those ridges!!!!!
Michelle B. says
No way!! The ridges are my favorite!! 😉
Narci says
You are so right! Toffee is delicious, and the holiday shapes are even better than the regular Reese’s cups! such a fun link up!! Thank you!!
Lindsay Jorgenson says
I’m with you I’m not a big candy person, but My first candy would have to be See’s Scotchmallows its just the best follow by their Toffee Crunch (give me all the toffee)! And then lastly Reese’s peanut butter cups and yes the holiday ones are always so much better! Don’t forget about the Reese’s eggs at Easter those are my personal favorite!
Angie Sharp says
We have the same conclusion at our house…..the holiday versions of Reeses Peanut Butter cups are WAY better! And the little egg shaped ones at Easter. 🙂
Nicole says
So fun! Speaking of all these sweet treats, do you still end your day with a brownie? Or have you switched to something else? 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Ha! Still a brownie :).
Tiffany says
I agree with the Reece’s thing haha and they’re even better cold. They also make Reece’s pieces filled peanut butter cups. They are amazing.
Mary says
Milk Duds, peanut butter M & M’s, and a toss up between red licorice (cherry) and Hot Tamales!
Loren says
Don’t forget the reese’s easter egg!!!

Tonya says
I totally agree about the holiday Reese’s. They are SO much better. I had a pumpkin yesterday. If it wasn’t for hot tamales (and raspberry zingers) I don’t think I would have made it through college!
Leslie says
Totally agree the holiday reese’a have more PB, especially the football ones for Fall and Christmas tree!
Amanda A. says
Holiday Reese’s are the best! I am glad they started making them for every holiday and not just for Easter! The regular Reese’s just don’t compare anymore…
Aubrey says
Our candy tastes are totally in line. Toffee and Reese’s FTW. And I think the eggs, pumpkins, and Christmas trees are sooooo much better than the cups.
Lizzie @ This Happy Life says
Toffee is my jam, and yes! They do make the holiday reeses so much better!
Brooke Richardson says
The bigger the better when it comes to Reese’s and I agree they should all be smooth on the outside! Way better that way!
Marcy says
1. Brown & Haley Dark Roca
2. Reese’s Holiday shapes (the peanut butter center seems creamier)
3. Sour Punch licorice twists
Lindsey Morris says
Holiday Reese’s are by far the best! I am a sucker for those!
Brittany says
I’ve always thought the holiday Reese’s were so much better than normal ones! The normal ones usually sit in our fridge for a while but the holiday ones are gone within a couple of days. Same with the Easter Snickers bars shaped like eggs. SO MUCH BETTER!
Megan says
Toffee is my all time favorite candy and I left it off my list!?! HOw!? Oh the shame. I’m swimming to your island. And hot tamales always remind me of going to Mariners games with my dad when I was little!!! Great picks!!!
Laci Murray says
My MIL and I swear it’s because the holiday candy is fresh…but none the less we agree!! I am a Snickers girl, but it has to be the bite size. They taste better! Haha!
Jordan Meline says
I said the EXACT same thing about the holiday Reese’s! I forgot about toffee and Heath bars…so so delicious!
Kathryn says
I am also weirdly obsessed with hot tomales. And Heath bars.
Karen Ward says
I totally agree that the holiday Reese’s are MUCH better than the everyday ones. My three candies would be: Holiday Reese’s, Skittles and Twizzlers.
Dana K. says
Agreed on the Reeses; that would be my number 1; followed by dark chocolate KitKats and Swedish fish! :). Give me those three and I’m a happy camper.
heidi says
Me and my hubby agree it’s a perk for all the sleepless nights that we can Halloween candy. It just tastes better on Halloween night lol
My 3 would be
Wonderbar
Twix
Baby ruth
Debra says
You are a woman after my own heart! Hot tamales are my absolute favorite! I’ve always loved peanut butter cups, until my husband converted me to peanut M&M’s. Also, you’ll need some fruit on that island, so Rasinettes should do the trick. In fact, if you could sneak some popcorn to mix with your Raisinettes, whoa, that is so much deliciousness all at one time! Sweet, savory and crunchy…YUM!
Melissa says
Obsessed with reading all of the “McKinney mom blogs”!
Love toffee, especially in a cookie. Everyone must try Justin’s dark chocolate mini peanut butter cups (Kroger and Target). My favorite reward (for maintaining sanity with adorable/hyper kids) and way better than Reese’s!
Angela Ellingson says
This is so great. Yes toffee! Yes Reese’s! (And Ha! I have never thought about regular vs. holiday, but you’re totally right!) I think I’d sub out the Hot Tamales for caramels! Definitely too early to by Halloween candy for trick or treaters! It would never make it till the 31st! 😉
Erin says
1. Candy corn. Obsessed. But not the brown ones.
2. Nerds. My all-time favorite as a child to get in my Halloween bag (ok, it was a pillowcase, but that seems SO redneck now–what was my mom thinking?!?)
3. Tootsie pops. Just so dang good!!
Alex T says
I love heath and reese cups! Have you ever put the reese cups in the microwave for a few seconds so they are sort of melted?! HEAVEN!!!
Melissa in Texas says
Totally agree on the holiday Reese’s!
I’d also take Take 5 Bars and Raisinets.
On a completely different topic… Following Madeley’s story has inspired me. I know I won’t be adopting any children myself, but I’d still like to do something. Is there any organization that assists families that are trying to adopt? Or a favorite charity that benefits children? I’d like to make a donation, inspired by your family.
Natalie Clark says
Absolutely no doubt about the fact that the holiday Reese’s are so much better than the regular! They are so much puffier! I loved the days when those made their way into my lunchbox growing up!
Cara says
I LOVE symphony bar brownies! Hot Tamales are my favorite, too.
Camille says
oh my goodness! I agree about the speciality Reese’s! My friends know this about me! I am always saying the pumpkin to chocolate ratio is better in _____ which every seasonal shape is out 🙂 My favorite was the Egg, but recently the forms have changed
Debbie Lei says
You’re SO RIGHT about the holiday Reese’s!!!!! I never thought about it like that. But more PB :’) = <3
Holly Hopkins says
Oh my goodness you are soooo right on the PB cups not the same at all as the holiday ones! Give me all the mini bags of ketchup chips, sour patch kids, & any mini chocolate bar!
Melissa Frye says
Ah, yes, the holiday Reese’s… I can eat the regular ones, but not the holiday ones because they are not gluten free… stinky, eh?
Liz says
Swedish Fish, Heath, Milky Way!
Jessica says
If you love toffee – you need to try Mrs. Weinstein’s Toffee (if you haven’t already) it is AMAZING. The almond is my very favorite. They make it at a place called Sweet Shop USA in my hometown in Mt. Pleasant, TX. They also sell it at Neiman’s (I think it is in NM packaging). Definitely worth a try if you haven’t had it!
And you are not alone with the Reese’s – the holiday ones are hand downs the best.
Happy Wednesday!
Fenny says
Why no hot tamale recipes, lol?
Chrissy Scheiter says
Yes, yes, yes, yes!!!! I agree on all counts. I’m not a big candy person myself. I was going to skip this link up because I don’t like candy. Then I read yours! I love toffee, mostly in my cookies. Reese’s are soooo much better on the holidays without the ridges. I won’t eat them any other time. And hot tamales are my favorite candy! You and I could hang on the island for sure!
Laurie S says
If you like toffee, try Sees’s Candies’ Toffee-ettes. So much toffee with a light coat of chocolate and rolled in nuts. So good…
Jillian says
100% agree about the holiday Reese’s. They just taste better in a festive shape, and the peanut butter to chocolate ratio is way better than usual! I am not a sweets person, I prefer salty to sweet, but this time of year when the fun size 100 Grand bars are out I can not leave Target without a bag in my cart. So those would be a requirement on my island
Marta says
Macaroons a must and I know it is not Halloween candy…lol. Let’s see, if it had to come in a bag, it would be a Reese’s cup, MM’s and Twix.
Katie Compton says
I love Hot Tamales!! They are my go to movie candy!!
Amy says
I totally agree about the ridge-less Reese’s. I also love the white chocolate Reese’s pumpkins. Why can’t I have those all year long too??
Therese says
You are so correct, the holiday peanut butter cups are waaay better. The peanut butter to chocolate ratio is better and the smooth edges!!!
Kacy says
Read this while eating Hot Tamales…I’m not a candy person either, but I LOVE Hot Tamales. 🙂
Robin says
Put the Reese’s in the freezer and they are EVEN BETTER!! 🙂
Brandye says
Reece’s (like a truckload…but how to keep them from melting?); hot tamales (my hubby is the reason for my addiction), M&Ms (some peanut and some plain).
Leigh says
I think these are three of my favorite too!! Good choices!
Jamie says
You have to order a box of enstrom’s toffee. It.is.so.good! Toffee is also my love language ????
Rebecca Jo says
I legit tell myself the protein story too every time 😉 #whateverworks
Kelly McNellis says
You are SO right, Shay — I’ve always thought those PB shapes were so much better and felt crazy for thinking so! Now I know I’m not alone. If we’re being honest here, I tend to stock up around holidays too 🙂
Lindsay @ Lindsay's Sweet World says
GIRL – I LOVE HOT TAMALES!!!! I think we’re the only ones! I used to work at the movie theater when I was in high school and we never had to order those because they would just sit in the candy case and go bad because nobody ever bought them. Haha. I LOVE them, though!! Those and the FIRE Jolly Ranchers. Gimme gimme gimme!
Shannon Wood says
I’m totally with you on the Reese’s thing. The eggs at Easter are my favorite. And I don’t normally like the bigger peanut butter cups. Something about those just tastes different.
Kathi says
1. White chocolate Reeses pumpkins
2. Kit Kats
3. Reeses sticks
Valerie Patton says
Your Sticky Toffee Bundt Cake is one of my all-time favorites!
Maria says
I totally agree about the Reeses Pumpkins!!! Its all about ratios!!! Lots more peanut buttery goodness!! And, of course toffee is a MUST! Ha!! Sounds like lots of people are in agreement;)
Melissa Higareda says
I was just thinking the same thing! I need to stock up on the Reeses pumpkins because I love the chocolate to peanut butter ratio. With the cups I always discard the ridges! Haha!! I’m so happy I’m not the only one that noticed!
chelsea jacobs says
TOFFEE FOREVER! Brb while I make all of those recipes.
Shara says
I agree about the holiday Reeses. Unfortunately I have a candy problem. My top 3 are Whatchamacallit, Twix, and Kit Kat. I also love sour, gummy candy *hangs head in shame*
Chelsey says
Totally agree with you on the holiday Reese’s! They are much better than the regular cups, I prefer dark choc, so I think that’s why I don’t like the reg. ones.
My 3 would be Sour Patch Kids, Heath Bar and SweetTarts!
Holly @ While I'm Waiting... says
I completely agree! The Reese’s Easter Eggs are the perfect ratio of peanut butter to chocolate. The pumpkins and trees are good but there’s something about those eggs! And, I completely forgot about Hot Tamales! Another favorite for me!
Wordshipper says
Total Reese’s snob here. Funny, we were just talking about this at the office today. I always thought it was just me who liked the shapes better but turns out just about everyone in my office does! And there is a specific shape that I love above all others – the Christmas bells…
Jeanie says
I love the English toffee, too. My very favorite candy, though, is a plain Hersheys bar (no nuts). I might choose a New York Mint Patty as my third choice, just to get a little refreshed.
Nicole says
Have you had Pumpkin Spice Hershey Kisses?! They are SO yummy!!
alyssa says
I was thinking the same thing about Reese’s the other day as I got into my stash (I stock up on holidays so I never run out). I hate the ridges-they’re too hard! Right now I’m in heaven because from now until Easter, the special Reese’s are in stock- then I fill my stash til fall!
Marsha says
In no particular order: (I guess I like chocolate!) ????
1. 5th Avenue….similar to a Butterfingers, but better…kind of hard to find
2. Skor…toffee….better than Heath in my opinion
3. Reese’s cups, but I like the “ridges”…thicker chocolate, especially on the miniatures
4. Also love peanut M&Ms, Snickers, Almond Joy, and Hershey’s Almond
Holiday: okay, here’s some holiday candy you should try: Russel Stovers Santa truffle, and Milky Way Santa head…Milky Way is definitely not a favorite, but this one is”mousse-like” and wonderful
Jill Myers says
If you love toffee you really need to try a Cadbury Crunchie candy bar (sponge toffee covered in milk chocolate). They are primarily available in Canada. Seriously they are amazing!
Jill in California says
Oh Shay!!!!! Please tell me you’ve experienced ENSTROMS TOFFEE?!?!? Hands down, the best toffee on Earth!!!! So fresh, sooooo delicious. I order every year for my family and they can’t get enough. You might need to order some and try it out for yourself! I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, and it just may start a new tradition with you and your family!!!! http://www.enstroms.com
Ericka @ A Quiet Girl's Musings... says
Hot Tamales are easily in my ALL TIME TOP 5. I have to be careful, though. Hot Tamales, to me, are what Lays potato chips are to others – I can’t eat just one. I’ve actually burned my mouth before eating so many of those tasty cinnamon nuggets! LOL! Fun list!
Have a great day!
