Shay on Today: Girls Trip Edition!

Happy Friday!

Am I the only one who feels like since July 4th is on Tuesday, we have a five day weekend?  Because I do!

Well, last Saturday morning, Kensington and I headed to New York City to spend a few days with my mother-in-law before our appearance on Today with Kathie Lee and Hoda.  And spoiler alert: we had the BEST time!  I tried to list every restaurant in this post (because we ate at some GREAT places!) and give my glowing remarks about the show we saw on Broadway.  So…if you’re heading to NYC anytime soon, take note!  We had A BLAST!

Our trip started off a little rocky.  The weather was horrible in Dallas that morning, so our flight ended up being delayed by hours.  Urg.  We made the best of it with lots of Starbucks, reading and a power nap.  I love traveling with this sweet girl of mine!  When Today reached out, they specifically asked that I bring Kensington and she was over the moon.  (And I’m wearing that same scarf that I wore in Alaska because I love it so much 🙂 . )

Waiting, waiting, waiting.  I had a VERY good book to read, a coffee to drink and I was wearing those Ugg wedges that I love so much…so my feet were comfy 🙂 .  For a wedge, they are SO COMFORTABLE!

We woke up at 4:00 AM…so she rested a bit at the airport.

Kensington and Lucky.  If you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you know that Lucky goes everywhere with us…

…Kensington and Lucky circa 2009.  She has literally rubbed the spots off of that dog.  We put an actual dog tag on him a few years ago with our phone numbers just in case he ever gets lost.  That would be catastrophic!

My mother-in-law, Cheryll, flew in from Joplin that morning to meet up with us.  Her flight was delayed by two hours in Joplin because of Dallas’ weather, so we finally met up with her when she landed.  So, my in-laws travel a ton!  In the last year alone, they’ve hit up cities like New Orleans, Vancouver, and Jerusalem…and they’re heading to St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Louisville this year.  But for whatever reason, my father-in-law does not think he’ll love NYC.  No matter how much we all tell him that he’ll love it, he has it in his mind that he won’t.  So, I told Cheryll that the next time I have to go to NYC for work, I’ll take her with me because she’s never been and has always wanted to go…and I knew in my heart that she would LOVE it.

And we finally made it!  And it was love at first sight!

Because of the huge delay in Dallas, we made it just in time to drop off our luggage and head straight to our dinner that night.  Whew!

I had made reservations for dinner at Toloache and it was so good!  I knew we needed to eat somewhere near Times Square since we had a show there that night, so after doing a little online research, this was the spot I picked and it was a WIN!  This little Mexican restaurant could not have been cozier.  It had exposed brick, lots of candle light and really yummy food.  Everything we ate was delish!  (And as you can see, I just swapped out my scarf for a necklace that night.)

So ironically, while I was in NYC filming a cooking segment for Today, my brother was there because he’s a contestant on Worst Cooks in America Celebrity Edition.  Ha!  Isn’t that funny?  Catherine and I knew we were going to hook up on this trip, but while we were eating, she texted me to make sure we had made it to NYC (finally!) and I told her we had and were on our way to a show.  She was like, “me too!”.  And then we realized we were both headed to see the same show!  What are the odds?!  We were all so excited!  So, we left the restaurant and planned on meeting up outside of the show…

Yay!  Family!!  Catherine was at the show with Mark (who is an extremely close family friend that resides in LA but just happened to have been in NYC too that week).  We were pumped!

Okay friends…we went to see Broadway’s new musical Anastasia (based on the animated movie) and it was UNBELIEVABLE!  I do not say this lightly…I was really blown away by how good it was!!  I had purchased us tickets on the third row because I really wanted my MIL to have a good seat since it was her first show and by the end, she was crying.  It was FANTASTIC!  If you’re going to NYC soon, I could not recommend this show more!  I think it’s perfect for people with or without kids.  We loved it!!  (I also love my tassel earrings!)

Kensington has always loved the animated movie, so she really loved the musical!!

After the show, we crashed for the night.  Then…

…we woke up bright and early the next morning ready to hit the town.  NYC was pretty deserted on this morning, so we basically had Rockefeller Center all to ourselves.

Love this sweet girl of mine!

The weather was PERFECT the entire time we were in NYC!  It was in the mid-70s with a little cloud cover.  I have never been there before during prettier weather.  Cheryll loved seeing Rockefeller Center with her oldest granddaughter!

NYC in the morning.

After that, we walked to breakfast at Sarabeth’s because…when in NYC, you should eat breakfast at Sarabeth’s!

It was divine.

We decided to spend this day uptown.  We walked miles and miles and miles through Central Park and also through both the Upper West Side and the Upper East Side.

Did I mention that the weather was glorious?  Because it was!  (And my top is here.)

Central Park in the summer!

Popsicle before lunch? Why not?!

So, we were walking up the Upper West Side and when I went across the crosswalk, I noticed this girl walking toward me and I thought to myself “that looks like Beth Stern” (Howard Stern’s wife), so I looked right to see who she was talking to and his voice gave him away before I even saw his face…

…it was Howard Stern!  I stopped in the crosswalk and grabbed my camera as they walked past me.  Looky there…a little celeb siting on the Upper West Side 😉 .

After all of that walking, we were ready to sit down and grab a bite…so, we randomly stopped here…

…at A.G. Kitchen and it was delish!  We sat on their covered patio and had the best little lunch!

After that, we continued our stroll up the Upper West Side and smelled something really good coming from this truck…

IMG_4541, we stopped and got a bag of caramel corn 🙂 .

We posed here.  In You’ve Got Mail, this is where Tom Hanks’ character sees that Kathleen Kelly is Shop Girl for the first time.

Top of the rock as we crossed through the park from the Upper West to the Upper East Side.

We continued our walk down the Upper East Side until we hit Saks Fifth Avenue and decided to go in.  My MIL loves makeup and stuff (like me!), and she said she needed new mascara…so I told her she had to try my very favorite mascara of all time and she agreed…but she told me that I needed to try her very favorite primer…so I agreed.  We both walked out with new things and we both really like them!  She told me that she uses my Clinique SPF every day (which you ladies know how much I love that stuff!) but then puts this primer on top (I have been using the Clinique alone).  I must say…the primer gives me both a matte and dewy finish at the same time.  How is that possible?  Don’t know but I’m loving it!

We tried a new restaurant that night called Joanne Trattoria and it was so good too! It was on the Upper West Side and in this cozy little building.  We ate on the patio, but the inside looked great too.  There were lots of fireplaces, twinkly lights and candles…plus the food was really good!!  And I’m in love with my new choker.  I haven’t worn a choker in like 15 years…but I’m kind of obsessed with this one.  I wear it again later too.

Dinner with my girl!  We freshened up before dinner and I put on that green dress again.  It comes in 6 other colors if green isn’t your fave…but green is my fave 😉 .

See how cute it is?!  This was my view on the patio.

Rise and shine!  The next morning we were up ready to hit the town for our last full day!

We started off with breakfast at The Smith!  Last time we were in NYC, we ate dinner at The Smith and so many of you told me we should go back for breakfast…AND IT WAS SO GOOD!  Wow!  The BEST breakfast potatoes I’ve ever had in my entire life.  So. Incredibly. Delicious!  And you know how they say New York is a small town?  My friend Mark was there eating breakfast with a friend.  How weird is that?!  One last thing…we were at The Smith and they handed Kensington a bottle of Sir Kensington’s Ketchup.  Whoa!  So many coincidences!

From The Smith, we took a cab down to the 9/11 Memorial.

My mother-in-law only had one request before this trip…she wanted to see this.

After we were done viewing, we decided to walk back uptown (a long walk!) and check out things/stop along the way.

Walking through Tribeca…

…we walked through Chinatown and Little Italy (pictured here) too.

On Instagram that morning, I asked you guys for lunch recommendations in Soho and so many of you said to eat at Balthazar…so we did! Another win!!  I had no idea what kind of restaurant it would be and it turned out to be a cute little French Bistro!  Kensington had the steak and frites and Cheryll and I split the ham and Gruyere sandwich with a salad.  Perfect!

From there, we walked around the corner to Georgetown Cupcakes to meet Catherine and Samuel…

…one unicorn cupcake, one caramel cheesecake cupcake and one oreo coffee cupcake (that one was mine!).

A girl and her unicorn.

Samuel LOVES him some Kensington…and vice versa!

We love that sweet boy!

Cupcakes with Catherine (and Samuel too!).

So, from there, we continued walking up Sixth Avenue until we hit Macy’s on 34th Street because my mother-in-law is a HUGE fan of Macy’s.  Both Cheryll and I bought new shoes 🙂 .  It was the perfect treasure to bring back from NYC.  You can see mine HERE.

After all of that walking, we freshened up quickly at the hotel and headed right back out to dinner…

…dinner at Carmine’s!  Yum, yum, YUM!  (And yes…that same old black dress that I wear on every trip I ever take…and at home too!  Plus that new choker that I love.)

The next morning, we woke up ready to go be on Today!

A hotel selfie before we headed out.  I’ve told you guys this before, but every time I’m in NYC or LA, I use the app called Glam Squad to come do my hair and makeup and I’ve never one time been disappointed!  They show up, get me looking my best and then I’m out the door!  Here are our outfit deets for those of you who care: MY DRESS (in navy)//MY SHOES//MY EARRINGS//MY CUFF//KENSINGTON’S DRESS//KENSINGTON’S SHOES

Here we are at Today!  Ready to go!!

Three out of seven Shull girls!

How blessed am I to have a cheering squad?  Catherine, Samuel and Mark wanted to be there for us that morning too!

And then, all of a sudden, Kensington’s life was MADE!  I’ve mentioned on here before how much I love Sutton Foster.  She is on the TV show Younger (which I watch), but why I’ve always loved her most is because she’s a Tony award winning actress on Broadway.  Kensington listens to her musicals in the car (especially Thoroughly Modern Millie and Anything Goes) and watches her on YouTube sing and dance ALL THE TIME.  So, when we found out that Sutton was going to be on at the same time as we were…K about flipped her lid.  When Sutton walked in, we went over and introduced ourselves and she COULD NOT HAVE BEEN NICER!!!

She asked Kensington questions, gave her a big hug and then later said hi and waved at her again after her segment was over.  She was lovely.  Absolutely lovely.  You never know how people will behave in person…but she was perfection.

Kensington has said the phrase “I met Sutton Foster” at least a thousand times since we’ve been home.  Such a sweet time!

Just lovely.

Speaking of lovely…

…I cannot put into words how lovely Hoda and Kathie Lee are.  I really can’t.  Hoda and I had a big hug over adoption and her newest baby girl Haley Joy.  Then, Kathie Lee and I had a big hug over Hoda’s adoption too 😉 .  It was magical.  They doted on Kensington.  They asked her a million questions, they hugged and hugged on her…they made her feel so special.  God bless both of these ladies.  I am truly in awe of them.

Here are some random pictures from our time with them…

Ah!  So much fun!!!  After the show, we headed to the airport and flew home.  If you missed our segment, you can see it HERE.

It was a wonderful trip to the Big Apple that I know we’ll always remember.

Happy Friday!  Come back Monday for my big June Book Review!!

I was going to tell you to eat at Joanne, but you already made it there! What is your favorite hotel? Also, we have visited the Tenement museum several times. They have amazing hisorical tours! I think your kids would love it! Glad you had fun!

Agree! I couldn’t figure out who she resembles 🙂

  • Amanda Yap-Choong June 30, 2017 at 6:40 am

What special memories!!!!! (Your hair always looks so good too). On a side note, if you want some good binge watching after such an exciting trip, I think you would throughly love “call the midwife”. It’s based in a suburb in London and a period drama about midwifes working with several nuns. AMAZING xx

    • Mix and Match Mama June 30, 2017 at 6:45 am

Yes! I watched that one!!! It’s so good!!

  • Narci Dreffs June 30, 2017 at 6:41 am

    Love the shoes from Macy’s!!
What color did you get? Have you worn them yet? I work in NYC so I need to be able to WALK all day long! Might run out at lunch to Herald Square to get them 🙂

    • Mix and Match Mama June 30, 2017 at 6:45 am

I’ve worn them once and they’re so comfy! I got the brown color (not the taupe)!

  • Kristen Hardison June 30, 2017 at 6:43 am

I loved the Identicals too!! Can’t wait for Monday’s book review! 🙌🏻 Will you remind me the name of the Watch your big kids wear that also counts steps? Thank you! Loved this post!

It’s a Garmin!! They love them!!

  • Lindyb June 30, 2017 at 6:43 am

Shay, I’m taking my niece that is 8 to NYC for her 9th birthday. She’s been obsessed with going since she heard Taylor Swift sing Welcome to New York 😉. I’ve been a few times but have no idea what to do with kid her age! Suggestions? Must dos? Thanks!

    • Mix and Match Mama June 30, 2017 at 6:45 am

You have to take her to American Girl on Fifth Avenue for sure! And I highly recommend Anastasia (Lion King and Aladdin are good too!). A sundae at Serendipity’s is fun as well!

  • Susan June 30, 2017 at 6:44 am

Wow super impressed with all the walking!
Loved seeing the segment- you both were fabulous and Kathie Lee and Hoda seem so genuinely kind!

Oh my goodness! We just moved back Tom a Charlotte from NYC in February and all of your UWS spots were ours, too! We lived across the stress from where you spotted Howard Stern! You chose awesome restaurants for your time there, and I loved all the pics of you and your sweet girl on KLG& Hoda. LOVE them! Congratulations, mama!

  • Megan K. June 30, 2017 at 7:21 am

What a fun trip!! I have a question for you…what shoes is Kensington wearing? My daughter is going into second grade and wears a size 2.5 which means she’s growing out of Natives. I’ve had such a hard time finding shoes for her this summer. Would love some suggestions!

    • Mix and Match Mama June 30, 2017 at 7:27 am

They’re Sketcher Go Walks! She loves them!!

  • Megan June 30, 2017 at 7:25 am

Loved this post!! The theater, the restaurants, the park. Love it all! I just discovered Younger and how funny that you mentioned it today. Sutton Foster is great and it’s nice to know she is kind in person as well.

  • Dawn Scheurich June 30, 2017 at 7:32 am

Such a fun post–thanks for all the pics. I might not ever visit NYC, so I love seeing all the sights through your travels!! Also, I live in Joplin!! I enjoy when you have a post about being here visiting your in-laws!

  • Nona C June 30, 2017 at 7:39 am

I love this post! Do you have a hotel preference or area. We are just unsure if staying near Times Square is the way to go…

    • Mix and Match Mama June 30, 2017 at 7:49 am

I like saying in Midtown because it’s easy to walk everywhere from there!

  • Laura June 30, 2017 at 7:39 am

Wow! Love all these sweet pics (esp Kensington in the crosswalk and the group shot at the cupcake shop) and your stories and experiences in NYC. I had no idea Anastasia was made into a musical. I love Sutton Foster too, and even more now that I know how great she is in person. Totally living vicariously through this post, it’s now a favorite of mine! 💟 Glad you had such a wonderful time!

  • Briana June 30, 2017 at 7:43 am

It makes me so happy to see Kensington holding a Lucky dog! I’ve had a 101 Dalmatians stuffed puppy (Dipstick) since I was a little girl and I still keep it at my apartment now at 25. Haha!

  • Lisa D June 30, 2017 at 7:55 am

How special that your MIL got to travel with you! Fun times for sure! And MMMama, your hair and clothes and smile always look great!

  • Corinne Wright June 30, 2017 at 8:13 am

OK, seriously, I’m so intimidated by the idea of traveling to NYC. You should do hosted mother-daughter trips to NYC. I’d sign right up! You lead the way, and we’ll have a blast!

  • Maria June 30, 2017 at 8:16 am

Yes! Joanne Trattoria Is Lady GaGa’s family restaurant. The NYC housewives have gone there too. It was featured on the show. Next time you’re in NY, have breakfast at a local diner on the Upper West or East Side as locals do. The best food and crazy good breakfast potatoes!

  • Melissa June 30, 2017 at 8:20 am

Looks like a great trip! Makes me want to start planning my next trip to NYC! It’s my favorite US city. You all were great with Hoda and Kathie Lee! Can you tell me about the top you wore on your last full day in the city? Where it’s from and maybe a link?

    • Mix and Match Mama June 30, 2017 at 9:41 am

It is a Lucky top from Nordstrom but not in stock any longer.

  • kanah June 30, 2017 at 8:25 am

    Just kidding..they’re working now 🙂

  • Michele Bartell June 30, 2017 at 8:27 am

Looks like a great trip! And the weather was perfect! Can you share what blush and lipstick you’re wearing?

    • Mix and Match Mama June 30, 2017 at 9:41 am

The lip is Bobbi Brown’s Taffeta (her Bikini Pink is the same color) and Nars blush in Orgasm.

  • Elspeth Mizner June 30, 2017 at 8:29 am

Love your outfit that you wore on Today!!! When you shop through Nordstrom, do you go in the store or shop online. Always was curious! Also where was your favorite place to eat out of all the places you went. They all sounded so delicious!!! So glad you had a wonderful and memorable trip!!

    • Mix and Match Mama June 30, 2017 at 9:40 am

I do both, but mostly online. I pretty much buy everything online (including ordering my groceries!).

  • Taylor June 30, 2017 at 8:53 am

I’ll always remember the trip I took to NYC with my mom, my best friend, and her mom when I graduated high school. It’s one of my favorite memories with my mom. Kensington will always remember & cherish trips like this with her momma & grandma!

  • Nicole D. June 30, 2017 at 8:55 am

Ah you were in my ‘hood where I work! (theater district) Toloache is one of my faves and if you HS walked into my theater I would have felt like I saw a celebrity lol

  • Laura @ Laura Likes Design June 30, 2017 at 9:01 am

This makes me want to visit NYC, stat! So glad to see that you had a great girls’ trip!

  • Rebecca Jo June 30, 2017 at 9:02 am

I am so glad to hear that about Sutton Foster – I LOVE HER (I miss the show Bunheads) LOVE YOUNGER!!!!
OK. my heart is still back on Lucky & how worn he is & how the spots are gone. I still have my dog I used to travel everywhere with. Sparky. Its so ratty, my hubby wont even let it on the bed, so he sits on the stand next to the bed. (Sparky, not the hubs) 🙂 haha

  • Jenny Jo June 30, 2017 at 9:09 am

Oh gosh, Kensington is such a little doll, I adore her!!! BTW Shay I don’t think you linked the new shoes you and your MIL got. It says HERE but it doesn’t let you click on it.

    xo, JJ

    • Mix and Match Mama June 30, 2017 at 9:31 am

Weird?! I just clicked on it!

  • Baylee June 30, 2017 at 9:13 am

Hi! I was wondering what foundation you were wearing this summer? I’ve been wearing the NARS All Day Luminous that you talked about a year ago.. but for some reason it just doesn’t sit on my skin the way it used to.. maybe just because it’s summer! Just wondered if you switched during different seasons to see if I should try something new 🙂 Thank you!

    • Mix and Match Mama June 30, 2017 at 9:30 am

I love that Nars too but only wear it in the summer for things like church (where it’s not super hot and humid). I’ve been wearing a little bit of Bobbi Brown’s foundation stick or her tinted moisturizer most days.

  • Paula June 30, 2017 at 9:15 am

    FUN! FUN! FUN!
I live vicariously through all your trips. With a daughter of severe special needs, travel is limited for us. But you tool me to both Alaska & MY within two weeks. Thank you.

  • Francie June 30, 2017 at 9:16 am

Beautiful pictures! I would love to go see a Broadway show in NYC, it’s been on my bucket list for years now.

  • Nikki June 30, 2017 at 9:18 am

I’m taking my daughter and a buddy to NYC over Labor Day for my daughter’s 16th birthday. We’re going to the US Open! I’ve pinned all of your recommendations so we can check them out.

  • Lauren @ Oh Hey! I Like That! June 30, 2017 at 9:24 am

    Omg Sutton Foster????!!!! That’s amazing!!!

  • Maria D. June 30, 2017 at 9:25 am

You had a great trip – one of my younger sisters, her husband and two of their children (the girls) are headed to NYC as I type this comment – they are so looking forward to their trip and I’ll have to text her some of the restaurants you visited – along with the cupcake place. I can’t believe how much Samuel has grown since the last time I saw his picture – he’s a handsome little boy! I’m so glad your mother in law Cheryl got to take a trip with you and Kensington – it was good bonding time for the two of them and something I know Kensington will always treasure. Have a great 4th of July weekend!

  • Rebecca June 30, 2017 at 9:51 am

Love this girls’ trip, how special & fun! I’ve been making your recipes for years & love your style too! I was excited to see the dress you wore on Today was the exact dress (I have the navy) I purchased at Nordstrom rack last year on super sale! Silly, but made me feel as stylish as you are!😉
Have a lovely weekend! 😊 Rebecca

  • Sandra June 30, 2017 at 9:58 am

Thanks Shay for this indepth review of your trip. I am a loyal reader but this is my first comment. My daughter and I are travelling to NYC in August to celebrate her 18th birthday. I’ve been there before but this is her first visit.
Thanks for all the restaurant recommendations – Balthazar has been on my to-try list forever.

  • Regan Reeder June 30, 2017 at 10:08 am

I read that your MIL is visiting Pittsburgh, which is where I’ve lived now for 10 years. If you’d like any tips or suggestions for her I’d be happy to share!

  • Leslie June 30, 2017 at 10:21 am

Loved this post! Thanks for sharing! Kensington did a wonderful job with her momma! You said your MIL is traveling to Louisville soon? Any particular reason? I just ask because that’s where I live 🙂

  • Marta June 30, 2017 at 10:31 am

Your mother in law has killer cheekbones!! Holy! I see them in Kensington who is going to be a heartbreaker like you Shay. Wonderful trip to NYC one of my favorite cities.

  • Katelyn June 30, 2017 at 10:32 am

Being from Pittsburgh I must ask-what are your in-laws planning kn doing when visiting Pittsburgh?!

    • Mix and Match Mama June 30, 2017 at 2:48 pm

      I have no clue? 🙂

  • Jamie K June 30, 2017 at 10:35 am

So fun! You always say you ask the glam squad about favorite makeup product- if you did this time, tell us about it on a future post!

  • Heather Roecker June 30, 2017 at 10:55 am

Loved seeing you on Today! My dream is to meet Hoda someday! 😍 Is Kensington wearing Sketchers in your full day photos? Need something like that for my daughter that she would do with her dresses! Thanks!

  • Lisa Klein June 30, 2017 at 12:09 pm

Did you love Georgetown Cupcakes? We will be in LA next week and my 10 year old daughter really wants to go there!! It is a good hour from where we are staying so trying to decide if it is worth the drive. Thanks!!

    • Mix and Match Mama June 30, 2017 at 2:44 pm

I don’t think they’re worth the drive. I mean, they’re realllllly good, but I don’t know that they’re an hour drive good.

I’m with Kensington-I love Sutton Foster too! I watched her ABC Family show Bunheads and thought it was adorable, I only wish it had gone for more than one season!

What a fun girls trip! It’s so wonderful that your MIL was able to come with you! I loved the movie Anastasia when I was little. I had no idea they made it into a play. I love Sutton Foster too. Seeing Kensington’s face when she met her… adorable! I’m so glad you all had a wonderful trip!

My husband and I are traveling to New York in November for a getaway. Do you have a recommendation for a hotel? I haven’t been to NYC in some time and never as a getaway with the hubs so curious your thoughts. Thanks!

    • Mix and Match Mama June 30, 2017 at 2:44 pm

I always say Midtown because it’s so easy to walk everywhere from there!

  • Lindsay @ Lindsay's Sweet World June 30, 2017 at 1:19 pm

Another amazing trip!! Girl, you are so lucky to get to travel so much! I haven’t been to NYC since 2012 and I miss it so much! It’s time to remedy that!

Me and my husband are planning a trip to NYC in August. We are wanting to watch a show on Broadway. Where is the best place to buy tickets? Online or at the box office?

    • Mix and Match Mama June 30, 2017 at 2:44 pm

i buy them online before I go!

  • Amanda @ That Inspired Chick June 30, 2017 at 2:08 pm

Love this post and all the great food recommendations. I follow @jackswifefreda on IG. (BEST FEED EVER) and can’t wait to try one of their 2 locations when I visit NYC. What a absolute bonus for Kensington to meet Sutton Foster – I love to hear when people are genuine in person. How fun for the 3 of you to have such a great few days!

  • Bridgette June 30, 2017 at 3:33 pm

As a New Yorker, I love reading about your visits to the city! I live on the Upper East Side, where one of my neighborhood favorites is Toloache. I didn’t even realize they had a midtown location until a couple of weeks ago! It is so, so good :). I also love that you stopped by Cafe Lalo and AG Kitchen on the UWS. Such a fun trip!

  • Crissy June 30, 2017 at 3:46 pm

What is the brand of watch K is wearing?!?!

    • Mix and Match Mama July 1, 2017 at 5:55 am

      Garmin 🙂

  • Brenna McC June 30, 2017 at 4:32 pm

I also have a very deep Broadway-inspired girl crush on Sutton (and watch Younger)! She is AH-Mazing!! Jealous of Kensington, it’s so wonderful to hear that Sutton was lovely. Have K listen to the soundtrack from Little Women the musical- the first show I ever saw on Broadway with Sutton as Jo March. The music is fantastic (and catchy).

  • Devon June 30, 2017 at 5:31 pm

As a long time New Yorker, I loved this post! Toloache is the best!

  • Kim June 30, 2017 at 5:42 pm

So apparently Sean doesn’t read your blog and cookbooks if he’s the worst cook in America?!?! Lol, I guess you got the cooking genes ha!! 😉😜 Thank you for sharing your life with us, so fun!!

  • Becky June 30, 2017 at 5:49 pm

What a fun post and read !! What about the cute white shorts you wore? Been looking everywhere for a pair I like. White shorts and white jeans are so hard to find good ones.

    Thanks !!!!

      These are Vineyard Vines!!

  • Laura June 30, 2017 at 7:03 pm

Kensington has such good genes! Your mom and Andrew’s mom are both so pretty. I think she REALLY favors Andrew’s mom.

  • Kerri June 30, 2017 at 10:03 pm

Did you guys go inside the 9/11 memorial? It’s so worth it

  • Kimberly June 30, 2017 at 10:55 pm

Glad you all liked Balthazar! I’m always reminded of that restaurant because I live next to Peerless Coffee in the SF Bay Area where they roast the Balthazar blend coffee they created just for the NYC restaurant.

  • Angela Ellingson July 1, 2017 at 12:39 am

Love all your dresses. Which one would be your go to for a wedding? I am having such a hard time finding one in the stores I like. Something that I can wear again and again, not just for weddings. Thanks! Have a great Fourth of July. I have a bunch. Of your recipes planned for our party.

    • Mix and Match Mama July 1, 2017 at 7:29 am

That black one (that I also have in navy). It can be easily dressed up or down! I just love it!

  • Liz July 1, 2017 at 10:00 am

Love all your travel tips! Do you have any recs for comfortable shoes (particularly for evening) for summer in nyc? Im headed there next month and can’t decide what shoes to take. Thanks!

    • Mix and Match Mama July 2, 2017 at 5:17 am

I wore my Tory Burch sandals and my Ugg wedges at night and both were so comfy!

  • Amanda July 1, 2017 at 11:49 am

Love reading your blog…I currently have a 3 week old baby so the late night/early morning feedings don’t feel so lonely and tiring while I’m perusing your blog and feeding baby Ella. 😀 You have no idea how much better your blog makes me feel during the rough nights sometimes!

  • Jaren July 1, 2017 at 8:56 pm

What a fun trip!!! I can’t wait to visit NYC one of these days. I’ll keep a note of those restaurants in the meantime. You did fabulous on the show, and that pie looks so good and so easy! Do you get nervous about being on TV? Kensington was precious!

  • Nichole July 1, 2017 at 8:57 pm

Ditto on the love for Anastasia and Sarabeth’s! We were in NYC for memorial weekend and hit up both. So glad you loved Anastasia too.

  • Vicki July 2, 2017 at 6:50 pm

Hi Shay! I just booked a trip to NYC for late July. Naturally we want to see a Broadway show. Have you seen Book of Mormon? I am deciding between BoM, Anastasia or Aladdin. We have a 17 year old son and 14 year old daughter. What are your thoughts? Thanks so much 🙂

    • Mix and Match Mama July 3, 2017 at 5:02 am

I have heard amazing things about Book of Mormon! I don’t know which one you should pick?? With a 17 year old son, I’m leaning toward Aladdin. I think your daughter will love both Anastasia and Aladdin!

  • Annie B July 3, 2017 at 11:28 am

What watch are you wearing in these pics?

  • Nikki July 3, 2017 at 3:45 pm

How fun!! Have you or Kensington watched Bunheads? Sutton Foster is wonderful in that show! I think you’ll love it.

  • Detroit Duchess July 3, 2017 at 3:56 pm

It looks like you had a blast! I love Sutton Foster and Younger – one of my favorite shows right now. Great job on your segment!

  • Lindsay D July 4, 2017 at 9:44 am

Great job to you both on the Today show!! Kensington was adorable!! I was out of town, so I just watched the clip online. Happy 4th!!

  • angela July 4, 2017 at 4:02 pm

We stumbled across Toloache one night and LOVED it, we eat there on every return trip! and you cannot beat Sarabeth’s and the park!

  • Erica M. July 5, 2017 at 9:41 am

Hey Shay! I was in NYC the exact same time you were and looked for you EVERY day hoping to see you somewhere out in the city, but had no luck. 🙁 We also went to Rockefeller, Carmines (my fav), Central Park, Little Italy, etc. and the weather was perfect. Hope y’all had a wonderful time!

  • Courtney July 5, 2017 at 9:54 am

This looks like such a fun girls trip! I had to mention, in a couple of the pics before the today show, your hair was kind of tucked behind your shoulders and it looked more collarbone length. I’ve never seen your hair that short but it looked really pretty! If you ever think about changing it up that would be a great length on you!

  • Shelly July 5, 2017 at 2:58 pm

Such a memorable trip! I love seeing you “in action”….vs still shots….it’s fun to see your personality shine through.

  • Lizzie @ This Happy Life July 6, 2017 at 6:43 am

How awesome you brought you K and your MIL with!!!! I am trying desperately to convince my hubby to go to NYC with me and he just has no interest!! I DO NOT GET IT!! LOL

  • Alyssa July 6, 2017 at 11:04 am

I see that you mentioned your Nike shoes aren’t available at Nike anymore…but is the style name on the shoe somewhere, and if so could you share? Just curious to look elsewhere for them if they are an old style…They are so cute! Thank you!! Always love reading your blog! 🙂

  • Kelly July 8, 2017 at 8:38 am

I always love your trip recaps! We are planning a NYC trip in September with our 16yo sons and I’m taking notes on the restaurants. Do you have a specific MIdtown hotel recommendation? 😉 Also, I have several of the tops you’ve linked to recently and I love them all. I pretty much know if Shay loves it, than I will too. Happy Saturday!!

  • Susie July 24, 2017 at 8:33 pm
