Yesterday was the first day of school…and we all made it through with happy faces!
Smith woke up very chatty (he’s already SUCH a chatty kid but he was EXTRA talkative!) and Kensington woke up excited but with a bit of nervousness too. Overall, the energy at our house was happy and optimistic. It was their first days of 3rd grade and 2nd grade. And you know what I thought all morning long? Where did my babies go? I swear, I blinked and time hopped them forward. Wasn’t it just yesterday that I had two under two? It feels like it.
We got up, everyone got dressed, they ate breakfast and then we headed outside for our annual pictures…
They picked out their own clothes for the day and for some reason, this shirt made me laugh. A lot 🙂 .
She has apples on her outfit…because, hello? It was the first day of school! 🙂
Sister picture! Please let me read Madeley’s mind for you…she’s wondering why she was hustled out of bed so quickly, dressed and not given her scrambled eggs? She was perplexed by the whole thing. Ha!
I mean…she seriously wanted her eggs.
Four kids ready to conquer the day. Oh how I love these four so much! They’re all so different and all so special in their own way!
Let’s do this school year!
Our annual backpack pics…
Summer is officially over.
We all piled into the golf cart and headed off to school.
In we go! Kensington turned around at one point and told me she was nervous. Sweet girl! I just want her to have such a great year!
We dropped off our 2nd grader…
…and then our 3rd grader.
Whew! Why is that so tough? It just is! After that, the little girls and I headed to breakfast on our town square with friends…
Our annual first day of school breakfast is always one of my favorite things. I just love these ladies so much!!
And then…there were two. They were loving all the attention 🙂 .
We wrapped up our morning with a trip to Hobby Lobby…because IT’S JUST ABOUT FALL Y’ALL!
Well, I’m finishing this post at 1:41 PM. In about an hour, I will go get those two big kids from school and I’m hoping they had the BEST day! I cannot wait to hear all about it. xo
…if you are blogging What’s Up Wednesday, our bonus question for the month is what are your best back to school lunch ideas and/or tips! I can’t wait to read these! Blog and link up tomorrow!
Happy Tuesday, friends!

Ahh, first day of school photos are the best! I need breakfast first thing too, so I TOTALLY feel ya Madeley. 😉 Our first day should have been yesterday, but it was cancelled due to the rain from the hurricane. Wish us luck today! Eek! I’m going to steal your backpack photo idea. They look so little with their pre-k backpacks …

I love that you can ride a golf cart to school!!! My husband is dying for one but I’m not sure when we’d use it haha. The neighborhood pool is around the corner, so it doesn’t exactly seem worth it haha.
Hope your kids had a fantastic first day!!! And glad you’re able to get some special time with your little ones 🙂

Looks like a success! Do you put their yumboxes in a lunch box as well? If so, what brand fits the yumbox? I bought a bentgo for my Kindergarten age boy but it won’t be big enough for next year.
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! It fits (barely but it does) in the rectangle Pottery Barn Kids lunchbox.

It’s just devastating.

Do you do anything creative with your kids’s old backpacks if they get new ones each school year-or are they pretty worn out by that time to recycle/donate?

Speaking of Fall decorations, do you have a post you can share about how you organize all of your holiday decorations? What do you use to store them? Any recommendations? I imagine everything to be so well organized at your house and your decorations are always so beautiful!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Hahaha! Please don’t imagine that! They’re in big bins up in the attic…I think it’s basically a crazy mess up there :).
Kelsey says
Glad to hear your kiddos had a great first day! My oldest starts Grade 3 next Friday. I was curious though, I know your daughter was born in 2008 (I’m a long time reader so I don’t feel too creepy knowing that) and mine was born in 2009 – but both are going into Grade 3. I live in Canada so i’m wondering if kids in the US start a year later than kids in Canada?
Mix and Match Mama says
Our school calendar year runs September 1 through August 31 for kids in Texas. So, K’s birthday is 09/15/2008 and Ebby Lee’s is 04/09/2009 but they’re in the same grade. Make sense?
Kelsey says
Ah gotcha – that makes perfect sense! Thanks for replying 🙂
Andrea in MN says
I “think” you mentioned the kids pick a new backpack each year. I wondered what you do with the backpacks at the end of each grade, since they are monogrammed (I think)? Odd question maybe, but I wondered the same thing the past few years for the back to school post. I know you are very busy, and I feel silly asking, but I am so very curious.
Mix and Match Mama says
We use them for traveling and sports stuff (dance bags, basketball stuff, etc).
