The Yankee fans in our family headed to NYC last weekend to watch a game and enjoy the city. This was Ashby’s first Yankee game and she was PUMPED!! At one point, Andrew texted me and said that the three of them had made a pact to go to a game every year for the rest of his life. Ha! I hope they do!! I know how special seeing a baseball game with your dad is…I’m almost 36 and I still think it’s special every.single.time.
So, here are some pics from their fun time. They went, they ate, they saw a show, they stayed up really late, they ate some more, they went to the 9/11 Museum, they ate and they saw the Yankees beat the Red Sox. Sigh.
Off they go! Dallas to NYC! Side note: Andrew did her hair. I was impressed 🙂 .
Their flight left Dallas at 6:00 AM, so that they had plenty of time in New York that day. First stop, lunch.
And then of course, their second stop was Serendipity! Ashby had a strawberry cheesecake sundae…and it looks like she loved it!
They hit up Dylan’s Candy Shop after that and Andrew bought me gummy bears…because he’s the best husband ever. Ha! After that, he said they went back and took a quick nap so that they were geared up for dinner and a show. They had a window table at Carmine’s before heading off to see Anastasia!
He looks like he’s having no fun, right?!
Kensington and I had seen Anastasia back in June and loved it so much that we knew they needed to see it too! It is such a good show! They all three told me that they really liked it. They also told me that they enjoyed their Dylan’s Candy during the show too 🙂 .
The next morning, they had breakfast at The Smith…because Smith loves to eat at The Smith. Ha!
This might be my favorite thing ever.
And then after breakfast, they went to the 9/11 Museum. Andrew told me that it’s the best museum he’s ever visited. I really think this was the highlight of their trip.
After the museum, they headed to Georgetown Cupcakes! Annnnnnnd…they were surprised by…
…Papa Jay!
My dad had coincidentally bought a ticket to that night’s game too, so he flew up that morning and surprised the kids (Andrew knew) that afternoon before the game.
My dad sent me this picture. They played a lot in the park that day.
Lots of subway riding on this trip…
…my kids love riding the subway. Ashby walked this whole trip instead of a stroller which worked out great because taking a stroller on the subway is not easy work!
And then, they got ready for the game! They had shopped earlier so that Ashby had plenty of Yankee stuff to wear. Andrew said that she insisted on a baseball cap too 🙂 .
I’m pretty sure my husband was in heaven.
Two peas in a pod.
She came home completely ruined. She is a Yankees fan for life now. Sigh.
So much to say about this picture! Andrew said she could not stop eating peanuts. (That’s our Ashby for you…she’ll pass on anything and everything sweet and since I’m assuming Yankee Stadium doesn’t sell chopped up bell peppers or jalapenos, she picked peanuts instead.) But look! She can use her right hand now!!! Y’all…9 very painful procedures in less than 12 months has done this. Look! She can bend her fingers now! She could not bend her fingers this time last year. And now, she can bend them enough to hold a peanut. PRAISE JESUS!!!!! My mama heart could just explode. She couldn’t bend them at all. And now, they are assisting her. It’s such a blessing. Oh how I love this extraordinarily tough kid!
Whew! That’s a wrap on Yankee Game 2017.
Kensington, Madeley and I enjoyed our special time at home while they were away. When Madeley is a little bit older, she is going to come to Red Sox games with us.
I’m not posting tomorrow, but will be back on Friday! We are actually off having fun this week and celebrating the end of summer. See YOU on FRIDAY!

I love this post. It’s so fantastic that they took so many pictures of their weekend!! Looks like it was a fun time away with Dad.
Even if I am reading this from my living room in Boston and the Yankees prevailed (argh). Go Sox!
Elspeth Mizner says
Wow! How fun and great memories to be made with dad! Have fun of your vacation Shay!!
Sara says
We went to the 9/11 museum when we were in NY last, and it was a very good museum. I would certainly recommend it; however, it did make me a little emotional.
Amy Heinl says
What a wonderful trip for them….Ashby looked so cute in her Yankees cap and what a blessing for her be able to bend her fingers. Prayers being answered. Smith and Ashby will always treasure these special memories with their dad.

I am impressed at how well Andrew documented their trip! That’s a blogger husband for you I guess 😉

I had to completely laugh when you said Ashby came home “ruined”! haha Only die hard Red Sox fans will completely understand that!! At least you have Kensington and Madely you can cheer the Sox on with =)

What a sweet trip they had!
AND Ashby! So happy she can use tjose fingers. Bless her heart. She never lets any of it stop her, does she?
Susan Williams says
The 9/11 museum is phenomenal! In 2012, I saw the memorial fountains, in 2014, I got to see the museum as well, and Oct. 2016, we went to the observatory. All three were worth seeing alone, but were amazing to see all complete! Looks like they had a great trip! I ❤️ NYC (but not the yankees ?)!
Jennifer says
Where do you recommend staying in New York? I was thinking about taking my son for a quick weekend trip for a Yankees game but I have never been. I might just have to copy yalls trip! Looks so fun!
Mix and Match Mama says
We almost always stay in Midtown because it makes walking most places so easy.
Jenny says
One thing I recommend is looking to see how close the subway stations are to your hotel. That made a huge difference with our kids when we took them.
Ariadna says
Oh my goodness I love this post so much!! Sweet little Ashby holding her peanuts and enjoying time with her dad!! I think it’s so neat that both of you take the time to take your kids on trips on your own, not many people do that! Props to both of you! And may I ask, how does a Shull kid decide who to root for? Do the older siblings influence the younger ones? Has Madeley really decided she’s a Red Sox fan? Sorry for so many questions! 🙂
Laura says
I was wondering the same about choosing teams! I was sure Ashby would be Red Sox!
Erin Port says
Praise the Lord for her fingers! Love that! I love that they go on these adventures one on one with you. I bet they will be some sweet memories they cherish for years to come. We are big Pittsburgh Penguins fans and so when they won the Stanley cup my dad outfitted all of us but he didn’t originally get my daughters hats but they both wanted them. He remedied that quickly! It’s fun to share those team loves with our kids! xoxo ERIN
Amanda says
I’m so happy for Ashby being able to bend her fingers now!! What a tough girl to get through all those surgeries!
Angelique says
Yay for Ashby – tears of joy in my eyes too. I can only imagine how relieved you must be. God works miracles!
I love NYC so I’m happy to read about Andrew taking the kids there and that Ashby had a blast at her age. I thought we would have to wait a few more years to take the kids but now I’m thinking we can go sooner than that.

What a fun trip for the 3 of them! I love all of Smith’s expressions! Ashby is quite possibly the cutest Yankees fan 🙂

How adorable is that?! Your family is beautiful! & Ashby! I’m an OT so I’m praising & celebrating along with you over her dexterity! Andrew & smith matching melted me & Ashby wanting to wear same shirt in pink & hat just sent me over! You better hope Madeley doesn’t want to be a Yankee, too! Precious of your dad to meet them!

I love this story and photos. I”ve always wanted to go to Yankee Stadium..not because I’m a big fan because I’m not, but because of the history of the franchise. Actually I always wanted to go to old Yankee Stadium and ever made it. Now I’ve lived in CT for 4 1/2 years and I MUST do it. My biggest take away from this post (I rarely comment but always read) is how grown up Ashby looks…she’s definitely a big girl now and is beautiful to go with her resilience and courage..You go Ashby!
Diana says
Andrew and Papa Jay are such wonderful examples of what a father should be…and Ashby’s hair looked great!! Way to go, Andrew!
Kelly says
Your family is an absolute inspiration on how to make memories with your kids! Well done;). Also, Smith is looking like such a big kid in these pics and Ashby’s use of her hand is such a praise of God’s goodness and grace. Happy Wednesday!

I was in DC and NYC with my 8th grade daughter’s class trip. The 9/11 Museum really was the most well done museum I have been to. We saw a lot that trip in both cities and through many years of travel domestically and internationally. I am sure some of it was since that day holds such a meaningful place for me. The museum itself was well done, the volunteers/docents were excellent and even though it was busy the other visitors demeanor added to it. I urge anyone who is in NYC to make sure to visit it.
Corbie says
Loved this! I am so impressed with Andrews pictures! What a great trip!

We just went to a Yankees game on Aug 2 so we were there right before 🙂 There was over 4.5 hours of rain delay so I’m glad they weren’t at that one! It was a lot of sitting. Fun stadium though!

What special memories for Smith and Ashby! I’m actually going to New York next month to go to the Yankees/Red Sox game with my dad!

Extremely impressed by Andrew’s hairstyling skills. Nice work! Your kids are lucky to have wonderful parents who give them these life experiences- I’m sure they will always remember and cherish these times. I love the friendly family rivalry- we had it in my family too between the Vikings (boys) and the Packers (girls).

I love this tradition you guys have!!! Our house is also a house divided over the Red Sox and Yankees – my husband is the Red Sox fan though. We have been in heated debates since before my son was even born as to what team he should root for! ? He is now 5 months old and I’m patiently waiting to be able to take him to his first game!

I love this post. A father taking time with his children and such joy on all of their faces. Tears. Great pictures. The photo booth was a favorite. Praise God for Ashby’s use of her hand.

I just teared up reading that Ashby is able to use her little fingers now. I knew y’all were keeping up with her treatments and I’ve always wondered if anything was improving. That is just amazing, Shay! I will continue to keep her in my prayers.
Carole says
Ashby’s hand looks so good! Would you be willing to share any side-by-side before procedure vs. after procedure pics? I would love to see the progression. She is too cute and the glasses on her are everything!

I’m tearing up over her eating those little peanuts!!!!

As I was reading this post, I was thinking to myself.. Wow, Ashby’s arm is looking really great.. and then I read your last little bit! Praise Jesus that is so wonderful!!! Praying for continued healing and improvement for that sweet girl 🙂

Oh gosh, what a special trip for Andrew, Smith and Ashby! Love that you both take the time to do these awesome adventures with your kids. Making memories!!!

I guess I never realized that she couldn’t bend her fingers to use them like that. I’m so happy for her that all the pain and struggle is having a good result. You must just be over the moon for her.
Judy says
Love this tradition! I remember going to Yankee games with my family when I was about Smith’s age. (I grew up across the river in New Jersey…now live on the west coast.) The best part of all these pics…seeing Ashby using her fingers with the peanuts!! I teared up!!
Alice says
Did Ashby understand what the 9/11 museum was about? I would love to hear your take on how to talk to younger kids about terrorism and violence in the news. I haven’t talked to my kids about anything like that on that scale, and I just don’t know when to bring it up or how to explain it in an age appropriate way. (My oldest is almost 5.) We don’t have a TV in our house so they don’t hear about those things unless my husband and I talk about it.
Mix and Match Mama says
I think she understood as well as a five year old can. We do talk about things like this at home and our kids have been other places (especially a lot of WWII places), so I think it’s something she understood as well as can be expected for her age.
Jeanie says
I love that Andrew takes the kids AND fixes Ashby’s hair. Also am loving that Ashby can use her fingers! This is awesome!!

Well this made me tear right up! So exciting to see all those procedures working for Sweet Ashby! It looks like the traitors in your family had a great time! ?

Love this post! And must confess that me and my mom (who were on a mom/daughter trip) saw your family up close while in New York this past weekend — They were at a shoe store on Broadway, kind of close to Central Park. I was star strucked and too timid to say hello, but (1) it made me SO happy to see them up close and spending time together, and (2) I took it as yet another sign of my calling to adopt because never in a million years had I thought I was going to see Ashby up close during this memorable trip I had with my mother. Thank you Shay!
I hope you are all enjoying your vacation!

I was just thinking as I was reading that Ashby’s hand looked great!!! And then you wrote about it at the end!!! I’ve been wondering how she has been doing, so it’s great to have an incredible update on her!! Would love to know if there is any other update with her health. Go Ashby!!

We haven’t been there! Right now, I would say my new favorite is the German restaurant called Rolf’s!! It is so good and the atmosphere is AMAZING!!
