It’s Mondayyyyyyyy!
I hope you enjoyed your weekend. The boys at our house were in Colorado all weekend snowboarding for Smith’s birthday, so we had lots of fun girl time. It was just a realllllly nice low-key weekend, and I think we all thoroughly enjoyed it.
I’ve been doing an experiment for several months now, and today, I’m going share it with you and let you weigh in. Ready? We’re talking about…
Hahaha!
Deodorant and Monday just seems to go together, right?!
Um, okay, if you’re new around here, I have been on an all-natural deodorant kick for the last 7ish months or so.
Last year, I hosted a little party at my house and one of my sweet friends was telling all of us about the importance of using a more natural deodorant…and she was verrrrrrry passionate about it. So, after the party, I did a little online research (where all the scariest information is) and decided that I too would switch to an all-natural version (after like 25 years of wearing the same brand)…and it didn’t work out as easily as I thought it would. I blogged about it HERE, but in a nutshell, switching directly from the regular deodorant to the all-natural kind made me break out in a rash. Annnnnd so I had to detox for a week before I could apply the natural stuff. And by detoxing, I mean that I didn’t wear deodorant at all for a week. So, there’s that. #sigh
So, I say all this to say, over the last seven months, I’ve been doing my own experiment with different types of all-natural deodorants trying to find that perfect formula for me, and today, I’m sharing my thoughts with YOU.
Now, I know some people don’t wear any deodorant and twelve months ago, I would have thought that was gross, but friends, honest to goodness, today, I totally get it. I still prefer to use the natural stuff, but after reading all of the scary things on the internet AND by going without for a week and realizing it really wasn’t bad, I get the not wearing it. #butistillliketo
So, these are the four formulas that I’ve been using these last 7ish months. I like them all for different reasons, but they are all four very different…
#1: SOAP WALLA’S SENSITIVE DEODORANT-CITRUS
Okay, I heard about this on my friend Ashley Insta Stories one day and if I had to name a favorite, it would be this one right here.
One of the things I love most about this one is the scent (it smells like orange peel). I also think this one keeps me dry (I’ve learned that I’m having a harder time staying dry with natural deodorants), but this one does a really good job. Now, I don’t love that it comes in a pot and you have to rub it on with your fingers, and I don’t love the color…it’s a dark gray. So, even though it blends in with my fingers really well, I don’t like to wear it with white tops. I don’t know, I wish it weren’t that color…but I think it does a great job. PLUS, out of all of these, this one has never made my armpits red or broken me out (from time to time the other three below will cause my skin to get red). This brand makes several versions of deodorant, but I like this one because it’s for sensitive skin and clearly, I have sensitive armpits. #sigh
I heard about this next deodorant when I did JAMIE IVEY LIVE…
#2: MILK+HONEY CREAM DEODORANT
Okay this one smells like the most divine cake frosting EVER! I wish they made a body butter in the exact same scent. This one is great too, but again, you have to rub it on with your fingers (which just isn’t my favorite thing to do). I do think this one keeps me nice and dry, but it doesn’t come out of the tub as easily as the one above, and the consistency is a little harder to rub in BUT IT’S WHITE! I love that this one is white!!
#3: PRIMAL PIT PASTE
Okay, I’m a big fan of Primal Pit Paste and used their charcoal deodorant this last summer too. I buy the Coconut Lime Scent, but they have a gazillion others (and even non-scented). I love, love, love the application of this one (like my good old-fashioned deodorant from the past), but after using the two cream deodorants, I think they work better on me. I don’t know? It’s so hard to tell, but I have seriously been applying and analyzing all of them for so many months that I think, those work a little better (but they’re harder to apply). This brand also makes a cream, so perhaps I need to try that next?
#4: KOPARI COCONUT OIL DEODORANT
Okay, so I love Kopari products. Like love, love, love, love them! I use their coconut melt, coconut scrub and coconut rose toner EVERY.SINGLE.DAY, but I haven’t fallen in love with their deodorant (which kills me because so many of my friends swear by it!). I love that you apply it without using your fingers, but I find that it does the worst job of keeping me fresh and dry. Oh no! What is wrong with my picky armpits?! I have friends who buy this stuff in bulk, so clearly, it might just be me.
So…yes, my whole post today is on deodorant. These are the four I’ve been using, but do you have others I should try??? I like all of these for different reasons, but none of them feel like “the one” yet. Thoughts? Suggestions? Ideas? Ha! I’ll take them all!
Have a good Monday, friends! My kids are off from school today, so I’m going to run some errands with my girls and then anxiously await the return of my boys. Maybe I’ll even order a new deodorant or two based on your comments? xo

Thank you for your reviews, Shay! I’m finishing up my current deo and am going to get a clean one next. This really helps!

Dabney Morris says
Hi Shay! I love Native the most of all I have tried!!
Emilie Schario says
None of these give you rashes? Every natural deodorant I’ve ever used has always given me really painful rashes, so now I’m skeptical.
Mix and Match Mama says
The first one never has, the other three have made me red from time to time. I had to detox for a week at first though. Before I detoxed, I broke into a big rash.
Laura says
Many of them contain baking soda (I think that was it?) which apparently a lot of people are allergic to. I know I liked Native brand a lot. After about 6 months I broke out in a rash BUT they are supposed to be removing the baking soda from the ingredients. I’ll also be trying Tom’s next- my sister has tried a bunch and says that’s her favorite!
Trisha says
I also broke out in rashes from the natural deoderants and discovered that it was the baking soda. Native makes a sensitive formula without BS and I haven’t had any rashes and it’s worked the best for me out of the several other brands I’ve tried. Good luck!
Kristen says
Native has a sensitive version without the baking soda. Also for those needing to detox your armpits, try using the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay mask from Amazon.
Laura says
I’m with these ladies! I used North Coast organics ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0716SFKV7/ref=mp_s_a_1_4_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1548474525&sr=8-4&keywords=north+coast+organics+deodorant&dpPl=1&dpID=51wPV4tlbHL&ref=plSrch )for About 9 months and when summer hit I realized it wasn’t doing the trick for eliminated body odor. I then went on a trek for a new organic deodorant but I had issues with Toms and Kopari. Toms worked but left me with a rash. Kopari did not get rid of the odor and left me with a rash. I then tried Native and I love it!!!!! Plus it is more cost effective than Kopari. I have been using it for about 7 months now and have not had a problem! Another one to try (I have it but haven’t wanted to trial it) is the DoTerra deodorant.
Kaitlain Hartman says
MeowMeowTweet has a great all natural deodorant and baking soda free options! I love them and I have very sensitive skin (baking soda deodorants made my skin peel).
Tisha says
I had the same thing happen with Native. The rash burned so bad
Melissa Jenkins says
I’m so glad you shared again. I’ve tried a few! I thought I was using a “clean” aluminum-free deodorant that I could share but Tom’s has aluminum. It is labeled as natural powder so I’m ticked that I didn’t notice this ingredient a year ago.
Lacey says
Me too!!!! I had massive, painful lumps under my arms 🙁
Pam says
Native gave me and my daughter rashes. I called them and they sent me the sensitive formula, which also gave me a rash. They mentioned baking soda can make sensitive skin break out. But doesn’t make sense, because the sensitive formula does not contain baking soda.
lauren says
Natives does this to me too. I think it’s because the formula is too solid for me and just rubbing it on gives me a terrible rash. It’s too bad because I love the scents.
Jess says
Have you tried Schmidts? They have a coconut lime and it is similar to Primal but I feel it’s consistency is alot like regular deo! I’ll have to give some of the others a try!
Taylor says
Just put number 4 in my cart! I made the switch and have only been using Tom’s of Maine deodorant from Target because it was convenient for me to buy and I feel very indifferent about it. This post made me excited to branch out!
Toni :0) says
Native, works the best for me with no rash and is now available at all Target stores. I tried Schmidt’s and it broke me out in a bad rash. My teen daughter uses Native too and loves it.
Kara says
I love Native too! However, once it became available at Target, I noticed the Target one was not as great as the one purchased online through Native. I contacted customer support and they shared the ingredient labels for each and sure enough, the Target formula had been changed. So, I stick to ordering straight from the Native website!
Kristie says
So interesting about Target. I recently bought some Native there and haven’t had the time to look up what’s really in it. I don’t love it though. Maybe i need to order directly from Native. I know that even within one company, products are not created equal when it comes to ingredients. Sadly, if we are looking for safer ingredients, we have to research them individually.
Stacey Robinson says
Thank you for sharing Kara! I have always bought Native online until this last month when Target started carrying it. I will definitely continue to buy it online too.
Toni :0) says
Wow Kara, that is very interesting and disappointing that they did that. What the heck?! Thanks for the warning. Will stick to online since they do have free shipping.
Kristine says
Good to know! I was going to order through Target, but Native online had a great promotion going on I ordered through them instead!
Rachel says
2nd the Native brand
Shauna says
I also love Native. I have super sensitive skin and many brands left me irritated. I have been happily using Native for almost 2 years without any issues. I always order off their website and can usually find a promo code on the Retail Me Not app.
Susann says
Native is the best! It keeps me dry and has wonderful subtle scents. I’ve got my husband and sons using it now, too, and they work out, sweat a lot, and it works great for them!!
Tina says
I love Native as well! Coconut Vanilla scent is my fav! I use the one from Target and haven’t had a problem. It even feels better on than the regular deodorant I used for yeeears.
Tiffany says
I have been using the Native brand for a few years now and I love it. I have very sensitive skin and had no reaction when I switched. I tell everyone I know about their deodorant. I will say the only thing hard about using it is the first couple of applications. It’s a traditional stick but it’s hard and dry until you use it a couple of times and then it goes on smoothly.
Katherine Darlington says
I recently heard Brooklyn Decker comment that she’s had to use prescription deodorant until her mom found her the all natural vegan roll on deodorant called Just The Goods.
She said it’s the best deodorant she’s ever used!
Brooke Richardson says
Shay, buy the thieves toothpaste on your next order. Not only is is great for brushing your teeth, it’s great as deodorant too. Yes you have to put on your fingers but it’s white and goes on easy. It keeps me dry and always smelling good. The
other natural products I tried that went on like old fashioned deodorant did not.
Melissa says
I agree! If you’re looking for all natural this works great!
Jordan McCaskey says
I just got the Native brand to try and like it so far – love the smell!
Jamie says
I’m on this very same journey and have been for a few years. Primally Pure brand is my favorite so far. It keeps you from stinking, keeps a sweater like me from sweating thru, and it comes in a deodorant like tube. Realistically, I think making a good, health conscious change means it probably won’t be perfect unfortunately. I’m with you, why can’t it just be exactly like normal deodorant without all the bad stuff?!
Ada says
You should try Primally Pure – it’s the best natural deodorant I’ve ever used! My husband loves their charcoal one and I love the Lemongrass scent.
Ada says
You should try Primally Pure – it is the best natural deodorant that I’ve ever used! I love the Lemongrass scent while my husband loves their charcoal deodorant.
Carrie says
My sister in law gave me an all natural deodorant that I tried and it really did nothing. I used a birth center when I was pregnant ( still see my midwives for annuals) and I actually asked them their opinion. They told me to research it but the lowdown is that scientifically their is no true evidence that antiperspirants are dangerous. They told me to certainly use a paraban free deodorant but that most are paraban free. I did research it honestly from what I found I am ok using my regular deodorant. 100% I know many people will disagree. I am still open to it but I also feel like it spirals to other things. Similar concerns are raised with hair products, make up, hair dye, femine products, sunscreens ( ok due to a severe sunscreen allergy we do use a better sunscreen and that rabbit hole of research is interesting!), etc
Marisa says
A couple of us in my family seem to have a sunscreen allergy, and I am not sure what to use instead. Which brand are you using?
Anita says
Carrie…you won’t get disagreement from me. I know there has been a push for natural deodorant, many bloggers have been reviewing them like crazy (still love my bloggers, this is not to pick on them!). I am a nurse, I work for a teaching hospital, all of our practices are ‘evidence based’ (supported by research). I started to get concerned that I should make the switch…I exercise intensely and I am quite the ‘sweat-er’ even between workouts; I reapply deodorant throughout the day because I enjoy feeling fresh and smelling good 🙂 . I have researched this like crazy. The evidence is just not there. Some of the information shared via social media is older info, that has re-surfaced, things that have been de-bunked by more studies. It continues to be studied, and if more data is presented that truly supports all of the ‘bad’, I will work hard at making a switch. If the natural deodorants do work for some, and they wish to continue to use them, by all means I think that is great and do it.
Farryn Bussa says
I love this post!!! I decided to start using natural deodorant several months ago and had a really hard time finding one that didn’t irritate my underarms, as well. I tried many brands, and ended up LOVING this Canadian brand called Rocky Mountain Soap Co. I randomly found it while researching natural deodorant. It’s easy to apply, keeps me dry and has literally never irritated my underarms. I personally love the Tea Tree scent! Highly recommend !
Leslie says
I’ve been using Schmidt’s in the charcoal and magnesium scent. I love it.
Kn says
Yes! The magnesium and charcoal is my fav too!
The baking soda in the natural deodorants is what breaks people out a lot of the time sadly.
Coreline says
Our whole family uses Native deodorant, the mint-eucalyptus. Love, love, love. Their subscription service makes it pretty affordable.
Kathleen says
Yes, try Rosy Pits by Megababe!! This has been my favorite.
Kristina Bednorz says
Have you tried Primally Pure all natural deadorants? They also have other amazing all natural products! Check them out.
Melissa says
Native deodorant-Vanilla (can be found at Target or online). I tried PP paste, then Kopari and found that I like this one best. I have not tried any of the creams, but I know that I would not like to put on deodorant with the fingers.
Ruth Poat says
Oh my goodness! After reading your post I went online to read up on antiperspirants. ?? I’ve been using a deodorant and antiperspirant forever. Now I’m convinced my brain is full of aluminium. I’ll definitely have to try these natural alternatives.
Emma B says
The best one I have found is either Crystal (literally a crystal that you wet,) or Schmidt’s sensitive skin I scented. I always break out from things and never have from these!
Sheilah says
Native!
Erika Slaughter says
Right this second one of my arm pits is red, the skin is peeling, and I have those painful bumps. Clearly, I need to try something new! I’m off to order new deodorant!
Kaitlyn says
I like the Saje Au Natural crystal fresh deodorant stick!
Melissa says
I’ve been on a similar journey and found a brand called Lume. It works!!! And no rash!!!
Melanie says
I just saw an ad for Lume yesterday, and I’m thinking of giving it a try. Glad to know you liked it!
Lori says
I switched to Native deodorant 3 years ago and have never looked back! They offer many great scents and free shipping. I think you would love it. (and it’s white!?)
Grace says
Did you have to detox with Native?
Whitney says
Native, hands down. They also come out with seasonal scents, so right now I’m still using Candy Cane. During the spring and summer, Lavendar & Rose is my favorite. It’s easy to order, they have free shipping, and several scents to choose from throughout the year.
Lu Ann says
I made the switch to Native about a year ago and love it. Recently, I tried Kopari but it didn’t work for me, so I went back to Native.
susan says
Thanks for the review. We have been testing and using natural deodorants since my husband has skin cancer surgery 2 years ago. None of my family like Primal Pit Paste – caused rashes and swollen lymph nodes. We love Native and I am a huge fan of the Tarte brand! You should try that one!
Narci says
Such good information! I love all of this, and can’t wait to try some of these!
Anne says
I love Primally Pure, lavender scent. It is a stick, white, and the fragrance lasts all day!
Suzie says
I use a different deodorant every day (I think it helps my body).. I rotate between different Schmidt’s scents and a brand called Polly’s (OPF Farms, made with goat’s milk -Polly’s Peppermint Pits is my fave) and a weird trick…. I use Thieves toothpaste in the mix! Just a dab on my pits (it tingles at first) but I love it. Also, none of the deodorants that are natural are meant to keep you dry (bc they don’t have antiperspirant)… so the goal is to just reduce the smell (detox) when you sweat! Hope this helps! I workout a lot and I sweat all the time! Been a battle forever!
Jennifer says
Native is awesome! I’ve been using it over a year. I have the non scented version because I also have sensitive skin, and I love that it comes in an applicator like regular deodorant.
Ashleigh Holden says
I have used Primally Pure’s natural deodorant for almost three years and swear by it! I broke out in a rash the first week but haven’t had any issues since. I love the lavender, blue tansy, and charcoal scents. I also love Primally Pure’s body butter, specifically the citrus + mint scent. It does wonders for wintertime skin.
Bryanna says
Primally Pure!! Works better than the toxic stuff!
Joanne says
Bryanna, same here! And, the tube lasts a long time.
Dara says
Native!! It is in a “bar” like Secret or Dove and works great. I tried a few before switching Toms and Primal Pit Paste) and this one is my favorite. I even had my husband switch and he is super active and athletic. It was only available online but I’ve seen ads that the brand is now available at Target.
Maria Zandri says
I swear by Schmidt’s sensitive skin line. The Jasmine tea is my favorite scent. It applied easily and is baking soda free. I had a hard time switching too and the baking soda was causing major issues for me. This brand has worked so well and is soft and easy to apply (and white!).
Jenna says
Primal pit paste in the jar is the only thing that works for me. Lavender scent. The best hands down!!!
Kassy says
My pre-teen daughter wears Tom’s lavender scent and it works great for her. I still smell a little B.O. when I wear it. I’ve tried Shmidt’s and it was too hard to put on, felt like sandpaper on my armpit (no thank you). I sweat when I’m nervous, stressed and obviously when I’m hot. I’m coming back here to read all these suggestions later today!
Laci Robertson says
I also ventured out last year and tried to find a safer deodorant … native is the best, hands DOWN!
Kerri says
I’ve been using Schmidt’s for years before they came in stick form too! A helpful hint: when using these natural stick deodorants, make sure to heat it up a little bit under your pits before applying.
Beth Miller says
I was a loyal Primally Pure deodorant wearer for several years, and I recently tried Schmidt’s because it was at Costco. I LOVE Schmidt’s!!! It was $9.99 for THREE sticks and the Rose/Vanilla scent is amazing! It goes on so smoothly and is skin colored, so not visible. I still sweat since it’s not an antiperspirant, but there is no odor. I love it!
Jen Dawson says
I made the switch myself and use Young Living deodorant. It was a detox period and I found through the summer I have to reapply. Also completely unconventional and I did this out of desperation I used my purse thieves spray. This worked awesome and I always have it in my purse in a pinch.
Megan says
Native!!! Love it
Stephanie says
Another vote for Primally Pure. They go beyond deodorants too. And my new favorite face item – SILK Therapeutics. Trying to change all my bathroom products. Getting there!!
Amy says
After trying a few different ones, Native is my favorite! You can buy it online or at Target.
Heather says
I’ve been on this journey for a while now too and finally discovered it was the baking soda used in many natural brands that was breaking me out. I’ve been using Native brand for about a year now and love it! They have a sensitive skin formula that doesn’t use baking soda and I’ve never broken out from it.
Paige says
Why is it so hard to
Find one that works??? I’ve tried soooo many and settled on Kopari but I just started getting red and I feel like it stopped working!
Natalie says
Schmidt’s Snow Day is my favorite! It is the closest to a baby powder smell and love the consistency! I really think it works well. The first time I tried it I found it at Marshalls!
https://shop.schmidts.com/products/snow-day-deodorant-stick
Faith says
Ms. Shay, thank you! Because you switched to natural 7 months ago, so did I. I detoxed for ten days and it was rough but now I don’t smell nearly as bad as I ever did. I tried primal pit paste but started to get a rash after two months. I switched to Schmidt’s and no rash! My friend tried native, got a rash and now is also on Schmidt’s.
Laura says
I’ve been using the primal pot paste after you wrote about it last year. I’ve tried many scents and love them all!
As for the ones to apply with your fingers that would bother me too. Could you possibly apply with a small kitchen spatula? Or a flat makeup brush?? Just a thought to help with application!
Amy says
Hi Shay!
Okay, my suggestion differs from all the rest. I have super sensitive skin and prefer natural deodorant. I get it when you talk about getting irritated armpits from products and just not finding that perfect depdorant. Now, I MAKE MY OWN and it is SO easy and simple to do!! You already have most of the ingredients. I follow this coconut recipe I found online:
https://wellnessmama.com/1523/natural-deodorant/
6 T coconut oil
1/4 cup (4 T) baking soda
1/4 cup (4 T) arrowroot
Mix together.
But I put less baking soda in it, maybe 1/2 to a 1/3 less (to the pt where it doesn’t irritate newly shaved armpits). I put it in an emptied deodorant container and stick it in the fridge to keep it hard.
Hope it works as well for you as it does for me!
Kelli B says
I use Schmidt’s in the charcoal and magnesium scent. I love it and I haven’t been stinky once since switching. I chase an almost 3 year old and a 5 1/2 year old around all day and I’m 8 months pregnant so you know my hormones are all.over.the.place. This stuff is legit. With that being said, I ordered the milk+honey one to try also. My hubby loves the Schmidt’s too. We tried the primal pit paste and it didn’t work for either of us.
MaryClyde says
This post is SO helpful! I have been thinking about starting to use natural deodorant for the last couple of weeks, but had no idea where to start! I also have sensitive skin, and was initially going to try the Kopari one (and I may still, at some point), but now I’m thinking I should try one of the cream kinds. Thanks for sharing all of your thoughts, Shay!!
Brooke says
Have you tried Lavanila natural deodorant from Sephora? I’m obsessed!
Tasha says
My daughter and I use Lavanila too. We used to use Tom’s of Maine, and Lavanila keeps her much fresher.
Heather says
I’ve been using it for several years. It’s the best natural deodorant I’ve found.
Megan Watkins says
I use native. I did the Aztec clay mask on my armpits to detox them and never got a rash. I do the mask once in awhile still.
Trisha says
The Aztec one from Amazon that you use on your face?? So interesting! You did that before trying natural deodorants??
lyndsey says
Love, love Native! Smells amazing!!!
Bethany Free says
I switched to Tom’s back in the early fall last year and it works very well! I like that it goes on like a typical deodorant and it is clear! The first week I switched from Secret to Tom’s I felt like I smelled like vegetable oil when I would start sweating after exercising! I think I was just self-conscious about using a new product and worrying it would not work because my friend assured me I did not smell like vegetable oil! Don’t we all need a good friend who is willing to smell us after we have been sweating! 😉
Kristan King says
I started with Kopari, at first I loved it, especially early in the day. By the end of the day though, I felt stinky and sticky. Just tried Type A for the first time and so far I really like it. Keeps me drier and smelling better at the end of the day. I’m still on the search for the perfect one though!
Sara says
I’ve tried both Native and Toms and have reverted back to the old standby Secret. I workout a lot and there is nothing more embarrassing than being the source of BO at the gym!!! I just don’t get the same BO prevention with the natural ones! I also agree, the jury is still out on how bad regular antiperspirant actually is. There are good arguments on both sides. And I agree with another commenter, sometimes it just leads you down the never ending rabbit hole of how “bad” everything is for us! (makeup, shampoo, soap, etc). Thank you for this post though! I think you should put these all through a hot July TX day and give us the final details ?
Charli says
I’m just glad to see I’m not the only one struggling to find one that keeps me dry enough. Most recently have been trying Kopari and, like you say, it just doesn’t do the dry/odor control work like I need it to. ? Thanks for reviewing and sharing!
Kaci says
Kopari has been life changing for me! I haven’t had the chance to try it in the summer yet. I do all of my cardio in hoodies though and still have never had a problem (and that a lot of sweating). Really love that stuff!
Jamie says
I am so glad you said that kopari doesn’t work for you. I was beginning to think I was the only person it doesn’t work for! I use their other products too. I stumbled upon this natural deodorant and it works really well for me: https://www.modere.com/productDetail/deodorant.
Victoria says
Lume deodorant is newer and clinically proven to last 72 hrs. I saw their ad and had to try – I think it’s doing a good job!
Rebecca says
Ive tried a few, and by far my favorite is Native. I order it online but Target just started selling it. I’ve used it for almost a year now and have no intention of changing it up.
Kelly says
I also must have sensitive arm pits like you because I’ve had reactions to all that I’ve tried except Native! It smells great, goes on easy and is white!
Kristin says
After trying a bunch, Lavanila is my favorite. I had tried Native after rave reviews, but something irritated me and I saw it contains sodium bicarbonate so that might be it. Lavanila’s drying properties are from corn starch. It also has antibacterial ingredients (bacteria is what causes the stink) and aloe for moisturizing, plus for every unit sold the company plants a tree. In addition to their website, you can buy at Whole Foods and Sephora.
Kenzi says
As someone who is very active, I’ve found that the Thai crystal salt stick works the absolute best. Now, it sounds crazy since it is just a stick of salt, but the salt kills odor causing bacteria. This is the only deodorant that does not leave a rash nor stain your clothes.
Brittany says
You need to try Primally Pure. I have a major allergy to shea butter and pretty much every natural deodorant is made with shea butter, but primally pure isn’t!
Nicole says
I started using the Primal Pit Paste after your original post about it and went straight to the Charcoal and sensitive skin ones. After reading online how everyone broke out into a rash from the baking soda I didn’t even bother with their non sensitive. I absolutely love it! I don’t have itchy pits or really sweat that bad now. On days I’m just staying home I won’t wear anything.
I too tried the Kopari and wanted to love it but I found that it made me sweat more and I felt super sticky.
Christina says
I am still waiting for my “AH HA!” with natural deodorant, so I’m excited to look into the ones mentioned. Tried like 3 Native scents, just doesn’t seem to work for me, tried Honest co spray, no go, onto Toms and its better than Native but still NOTHING like the regular stuff. I’m so sick of stinking but I know how bad the regular deodorants are, UGh!!!
Laura says
I like LaVanilla that I buy from Sephora and recently saw it at Ulta. It is a wetter formula but does dry down. I used Schmidt’s for a few months but my clothes ended up stained.
Julie Kennedy says
I think Vichy has a great non-aluminum one. It’s a little more expensive but worth it!
https://www.vichyusa.com/skin-care/skin-care-product-type/body-care/dry-touch-deodorant-3337871322595.html?cm_mmc=GooglePS-_-ProductSearch-_-DRYTOUCHDEODORANT-_-None&cm_mmc=cpc-_-googlePLA-_-Shopping:%20PLA_PLA%20-%20All%20products-_-kw:%20&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4pqbvoX_3wIVFa_ICh3YzQJvEAQYASABEgIwP_D_BwE
Natalie Alvarado says
Native Coconut and Vanilla is the best!! And I’ve tried several. Also, order it online because the Target version is different.
Elaine says
Many deodorants look “clean and natural” but if the word “fragrance” is listed as an ingredient, run the other way!! Companies do not have to disclose exactly what is in fragrance and all kinds of chemicals and carcinogens can be disguised under the word “fragrance”. I’d highly suggest the documentary Stink on Netflix.
Meghan B says
I love Hilltop Designs – it is a roll on one, and I’ve never broken out (and I have sensitive skin.) I use the original “Unscented” one which actually has a slight coconut scent because of the coconut oil in it.
Courtney says
I love Native! Have been using it for a couple of months! Are you still reading? I love your monthly book blog and haven’t seen one in a while. You’re my go to girl for book recommendations!?
Julia says
I tried the Primal Pit Paste one after you blogged about it and I really like it! But I’m trying the Humble deodorant which I ordered off Amazon now and I really like that one too!
Amy says
A little company out of Nashville… Little Seed Farm. You can get free samples from the website (have to pay shipping). It’s in a tub, but you can buy a bamboo applicator. NO BAKING SODA. Also doing a charcoal paste detox every so often can help detox the nastiness out of pits.
Eva H. says
I love LSF deodorant too!! Also love that they are a small, family run business as well.
Kristy L says
Another vote for Lume! I randomly tried it after seeing multiple Facebook posts and this is the only natural deodorant that keeps me smelling clean and doesn’t give me a rash. I love the original scent, it’s white (!), and they have one you can sweep on like normal deodorant.
Renee says
Kopari did not work for me either. I was very wet and stinky when I used it. I gave up on it after a month. I like the primal pit paste and have used it for over three month and just the past week , I start getting some itchy bumps at the top of my arm pit (the top when I raise my arm above my head).

I have a friend who’s passionate about natural deodorant too, so I’ve been looking into it! So far I’ve tried Native…it’s a traditional stick with good scents, but it does feels tacky for a few minutes. I’ve also started going without on days when I’m not really doing anything…which I, too, thought would be bad, but it’s really not!
Brooke Garwood says
Love love love Native!! Tried many and this one was the best for me. Thanks for your review!! Really good info.
Amanda says
Native and Schmidt’s (sensitive skin) are the winners for me. They smell great, are mess free, sold at target and don’t give me a rash!
Leah Crouse says
I’ll jump on the Native train! I’ve been using it for over a year now. I noticed that in the summer months, in hot and humid Alabama, I was getting some red irritation. I switched to the Native Sensitive in Coconut Vanilla and have had no problems! I love the free shipping and I subscribe to get it every two months, so it’s really only $5 a month.

I use Scully’s deodormint, its been made by 4 generations now and has been around since 1928. I love this stuff and it comes in a glass spray bottle. This tag line comes from their website:
AMAZINGLY REFRESHING!
The first deodorant you’ll ever love… Scully’s Deodormint® works because our formula of blended mints and citric acid kills the bacteria that make the odor in the first place.
you can find it at http://www.scullyswonderfulstuff.com
Give it a try, I love the way it feels when sprayed on..it has a cooling effect and works!!

Native is the BEST and I tried so many natural ones that would leave me stinky ha my fiancé was like you need to switch back to regular! Then I tried Native. I do the subscription service online and they sent it every few months which is awesome. Love it and it’s so worth it to know it’s natural and free of aluminum and other chemicals.
Marisa says
It’s not you. The Kopari deodorant does not work for me either. I am so stinky by lunch time.
Briana Stiles says
Primally Pure is the BEST. It is the only one that hasn’t made me break out in a rash. It doesn’t keep my 100% dry but other than that it is perfect.
Gwen says
Try Norwegian deodorant. Glides on & has never caused a break out or redness.

Hi Shay! First time commenting here 🙂
Awesome post. I also changed to natural deodorant but years ago now. I started with Native, it worked perfectly for months and suddenly I just couldn’t use it anymore, I developed such a bad bad rash that I even had to go to the dermatologist (I have sensitive skin and never thought I would be getting a rash from a natural deodorant). After using a very expensive cream, I realized it was actually the deodorant. I stopped using it and everything went back to normal.
Now I’m using Bali Secrets, it’s amazing!! I have had no problems with it and it’s been over a year now. I actually tried to test and go back to Native to see what would happen and only one day of using it and I started getting itchy again.
Bali secrets is working perfectly for me and the rose scent is wonderful. It’s a stick but more “liquidy”, not like the regular white firm stick, which in my opinion I like it better when it’s liquid.
Bluegal says
I used to use a deodorant powder from Lush that was primarily coconut scented, I think. I checked and now they have four products I haven’t tried yet—two bars and two powders so I’ll have to try them again and see! Sometimes the scents are too much for me but some are milder.
Darla Hughes says
Native is my favorite – I order them online and love the smells. I tried a couple of others I didn’t like. I’ve been using it for over a year.
Melissa says
Lavanila is hands down my favorite. It’s the only one that didn’t give me a rash out of all that I have tried, and I tried a lot. I use the Sport Luxe.
Katie T. says
I have been researching natural deodorants too! And I recently found an article that explained the rash could be the baking soda but also, because they are not anti-perspirants. They are simply deodorants. So, unlike the chemical filled stuff we are all used to these are simply masking smell, not stopping you from perspiring. So the extra moisture in your under arms can cause friction/rubbing and create redness. I’ve been exfoliating (which is supposed to help) and just patting dry when I notice they are a little bit moist. I did go deodorant free for several months and didn’t really notice a big difference, so who knows! I am using Native vanilla coconut right now but i got I from Target and apparently that’s a different formula. I am going to order the sensitive one from their website next because I do like it and the smell is perfection!
Kate Nelson says
Just got American Provenance for me and my husband. Their scents are so good and so far its working as well or better than the NATIVE that I’ve been using. I love the Pinups and Paramours scent. My husband likes the scent called Shotguns and Shenanigans. (great names and branding 🙂
Jessica says
Hi Shay, I’ve been down this road a few years ago. I’ve tried several and discovered my favorite is from modernroots.org. My favorite scent is cooling cucumber. You should check out their website. We use their bar soaps, facial scrubs, hand cream/soaps and vapor fluff (just to name a few). Good luck!
Chasity says
Good ole Schmidt’s Charcoal and Magnesium!! I too had itchy armpits when first trying this deodorant but I realized that I was putting it on after shaving. I have started shaving at night and then putting it on in the morning. No more itchy armpits and i don’t stink!! It is a grayish color but seems to go on pretty clear. It hasn’t made any stains on my clothes!
Alyssa says
Like many others, I’m a fan of Primally Pure, and they offer auto shipping.
Deb Weber says
I have been using Native for a little over a year. After reading the reviews, I’m glad I chose Native. The ordering and shipping have always been fast and easy. I like the trying the seasonal scents. I am going to order some for both of my sons the next time I order to see what they think.
Alison says
I have been having success with Native as well. I do notice a little wetness, but that seems to be getting better as my body adjusts. I suggest trying their travel set so that you can try several scents and find a favorite. They also make a charcoal one that is limited. I think it works the best on wetness, but it don’t love the color; using it in winter mostly.
Kelly says
I don’t use any. I was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago at age 31 and haven’t put deodorant on since the day of the biopsy! I have been surprised how little I have missed it!
Amy says
Love this post, I switched to all natural about 6 months ago and have used Kopari. No rash but some days I do have a hard time staying dry and I don’t like that. I recently purchased Schmidts Rose and Vanilla from Costco but have yet to try.
AliJ says
I was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 years ago and when I had to have radiation the oncologist recommended Tom’s. I had no problems with it at all. I was worried I’d smell but it really does work well!
Sara Alexander says
I’ve had luck with Lavanila!
It’s scary what we are putting into/onto our bodies without really knowing the danger that is there.
Laura says
I have been struggling sooo much with this deodorant stuff!! I have the Kopari and thought there was something wrong with me because it does NOT work. I actually started to doubt the other bloggers that promoted it because I don’t even sweat a lot but I was wet and smelly by the end of the day!!
Any progress with switching Andrew to a natural one?
Bailie says
Ursa Major! Its a tradiotnal stick and you can purchase on amazon. I swear by this stuff!
Megan says
I’ve used natural deodorant for a few years now and feel like I’ve tried them all! They either don’t work or I’m still allergic to them. Everyone swears by Kopari (like you mentioned) but I’m highly allergic to it!! The one I’ve been using for a while now is by the Fresh line. You can get it at Nordstrom or Neiman’s. Love it!!
Meg says
You need to try Native. It’s hands down the best natural deodorant that I’ve tried, which have been many others. I would advise ordering from their website instead of buying at Target. I have always bought from the website directly because they have more scents to choose from. I have used the Coconut and Vanilla and the Lavender and Rose scents. They sell the same scents from a sensitive skin line, which I haven’t tried because I have never had a rash from their original products.
Colleen T. says
I tried many natural deodorants (Tom’s etc.) and none of them worked for me. I still smelled after trying them for weeks. I tried Native and that was amazing and worked for months. Then I developed a rash that was very itching and unrelenting. I was told it was due to Native and stopped but now I believe it may have been due to my shaving cream. I’m going to go back to Native to see if it works. The smells are amazing, does not leave any marks on your clothes and it actually works. The customer service is amazing. If you don’t like the scent or have any issues, they will work with you. Because their customer service was so great, I would highly highly recommend giving them a try.
April says
I have tried and like Native – I order online. I have tried Kopari and I don’t like it either. It leaves me feeling sticky – and I do not like my underarms feeling sticky. After reading through the comments – I think I’ll stick with Native.
Thanks for sharing, Shay!

After a cancer diagnoses, I began switching out all my products. I tried several natural deodorants (including Native) but got a rash with all of them except Young Living’s line. I did have to go a week or more without using any deodorant because of the rash issue but haven’t had one since.
Lindsay says
Hi Shay! I have recently started using natural deodorant and I was wondering if Andrew uses it as well? I have wanted to get some for my husband but I’m not sure even the strongest natural deodorant would be enough for him! ??

Good question! He is not ready to make the switch.
Zelda Sanchez says
I have used Earth Science Tea Tree Lavender and foe years and it smells great!
Meredith says
I’ve used Truly’s natural deodorant for years. No one seems to talk about it, but it’s my absolute favorite! It is a paste that you apply with your fingers, which I wasn’t crazy about but have gotten used to. It does have baking soda in it. (It has never broken me out.) I tried Native and wanted to love it because it smells great and it comes in a typical deodorant applicator, but I noticed it doesn’t keep me smelling fresh like Truly’s. You eventually get used to sweating with natural deodorants, it just takes time!
Jami says
I’ve been using Native for about 6 month so and liven it. I’ve tried Coconut & Vanilla, Lavender & Rose, and I’m currently using Cotton & Powder which is such a light fresh scent. I haven’t had any trouble. I work at a high school and wore for one of the first times at our open house event, extremely hot in the building but I never felt too wet or sweaty.
I first ordered it and ironically a week later got a phone call that some tests showed I had pre cancerous and possible cancerous cells in my uterus. A week after that I was having a total hysterectomy plus ovary removal and the doctor has discouraged any hormone replacement. That put me in menopause at 39. Anyway.. due to that scare, which everything else came back clean, I’ve tried to start using more natural products.
Like another commenter said it comes in a container like any other deodorant and it can be a little hard and rough at first but after a couple days it softens up and it’s no different than Secret or Sauve.
Atlanta Meynier says
Try Lafe’s brand-you can find it at Whole Foods! Lafe’s is a company in Austin (and it’s my dad;) he has been in the business a long time and as a dad and grandfather he is passionate about staying healthy. Hope it works for you! http://www.lafes.com

I am not a fan of kopari at all. I tried for a few months but it made me smell worse than not wearing any at all. I wanted to love it but gave up! I Iike Lavanilla from Sephora as well. But, I’m going to order native today from all the comments. Thanks for this post!

I went to natural products a few years ago, and have tried several products ever since. Some of the scents sound like they would be nice but are downright gross. ? I really liked the Pacifica deodorant wipes and used them for a long time. love the coconut scents. I find they work well except in extreme heat. My office is the first one next to the boiler room in a very old building. So while my neighbors across the hallway have space heaters and wear layers, I’m in short-sleeves because my office can be like a sauna when the temps drop really low and the heat works over time to warm their office. Recently, I dec ided to give Kopari a try because I love their other products . So far, I really love it. It works for me, even on those heatbox days! ?
Nicola says
Definitely try Primally Pure deodorant
(Geranium & Blue Tansy are my favs)!
They contain the perfect amount of baking soda to avoid irritation & give awesome natural deodorant tips (dab it on, don’t smeer; less is more, 2 dabs per area; and warm it slightly to apply better).
I found those tips super helpful when I switched to natural deodorant! Can’t wait to hear if you love them! I think they also have a quiz to find your perfect deo ?
katie says
i keep seeing ads on instagram for myro. it says it’s all natural and looks like you would apply like a normal deodorant. would love to hear your review on that!
Terry says
Personally, I love Kopari. But one worth trying is Skinny. Their line of 100% pure coconut products is amazing! Their coconut oil is all I’ve been using to cleans my face now for over a year. I just got a sample last week at the buyers market in Atlanta and gave it a try. It works great, but I’m not in love with the way it goes on compared to Kopari. My daughter compared its application to that of Native.
Jessica says
Native for the win! But I would say be open to trying a few scents. I’ve learned that anything with a mint smell doesn’t work for long on my body. By mid afternoon, I can smell myself a little. But the other scents work great for me. I even got my boyfriend to start using Native!
Ranisa says
I am looking forward to going back and reading these comments. I have only tried one on your list. I have too have been on a natural deodorant that I love hunt. I have tried primal pit paste stick, toms, native, native sensative, some brand my doc had in his office (I didn’t like it and do t recall the name), a charcoal and magnesium by native, schmidt’s, and Schmidt’s sensative. By far my favorite is the jasmine tea scent sensative by schmidt’s.
Christy says
Sounds Crazy but Young Living’s Thieves toothpaste was recommended to me over a year ago to use a deodorant! I started using it and have never looked back. I love it. 100% nontoxic and works amazing !
Samantha Barnett says
Who knew that deodorant was such a passionate thing?? It’s crazy how different our bodies are. I’ve tried several natural brands and gave up because nothing worked. A couple of years ago, my person told me to try one by Olive Tree and gave me the rest of one of hers so that I could try it without the expense. I love it! My favorite is Tea Tree Lavender though I’m using Cedar Lavender right now because I couldn’t convert my husband. Hahaha! A bonus is that it’s a locally-made product in the metroplex. Check it out at olivetreebodycare.com. I am in no way endorsed. I just love their deodorant.
Marilyn Grable says
Did you try Toms?
Mix and Match Mama says
I haven’t yet. I”ve only tried the four I reviewed today.
Staci Hart says
I am super sensitive! I found Native at Target and love it! The only time I notice a difference in coverage is during “that time of the month”, otherwise I am good to go!
Bryanna says
That’s super interesting! I have never noticed any sort of change during “that time”!
Jillian says
After your post last year I also made the switch to natural! I ordered some mini jars from primal pit paste to see if I was sensitive to any of them. I had no problems after my detox period so I ordered larger jars in their regular level 2 deodorant, and I have had no problems from that. BUT I ordered a stick recently and I broke out terrible under one arm! I reached out to them and they sent me a sample of their zinc formula and it is nice and easy to apply. But what is crazy is when I cleared up under my arm I started using my jar of the regular formula again (which was the same as the stick, just in a different type of application) and I have had no problems since. It was like I was sensitive to the stick itself. I think it was too hard, even after holding it on my skin to soften it and that is what caused the reaction. You should try their jars and see how that works for you
Amy says
I’m on the Schmidt’s train-
Coconut lime, Jasmine Tea, and Rose Vanilla are my favorites.
I actually look forward to putting my deodorant on because I love the subtle scents so much!
The are 10-12 dollars each at Whole Foods or Sprouts, if they aren’t on sale, but TJ Maxx sells them for $4.99 and right now Costco is selling three pack of the Rose Vanilla for $9.99.
I find I go through the natural deodorants more quickly so I like to have back- ups at home. I have never had a rash issue with Schmidt’s.
Melissa says
I’ve tried so many and my favorite is LaVanilla in the vanilla scent! It’s the only one that works for me

This is going to sound weird since I’m not a teenager, but I love the Tom’s Wicked Cool Deodorant for Girls – Target sells it online and the smell is the best I’ve found thus far for natural deodorants. I have sensitive skin too, and I’ve never had an issue with getting a rash from using this product. You should give it a try! https://www.target.com/p/tom-s-of-maine-174-wicked-cool-summer-fun-natural-deodorant-stick-for-girls-2-25oz/-/A-49118538

I prefer ones made with essential oils instead of fragrance for scent. I’ve tried Schmidt’s and Stinkbug Natural’s, but my favorite is the vegan one from Naturally Silky Soap. You don’t have to use your fingers and it keeps me dry all day.
Libby says
Love this topic! I used Native for a few months and loved it BUT it turned my armpits dark. I’m too vain for that! Evidently it’s a common thing with these natural deodorants. A week after going back to Dove and my coloring was normal again. It’s such a hard toss up!
Kristy says
For the past 8 months I’ve been using a simple homemade mix of essential oils and pure lotion. Fill a 4 oz glass jar with lotion and mix in 20 drops each of copaiba, frankincense, and tea tree. Super simple!
Meredith says
O made the switch after your last pist, tried toms, but did not like the scent I got, bought Schmidt’s and after a few weeks had a horrible rash that took weeks to get over. My daughter also said it was not strong enough for her. I bought a generic form of toms lavender at Wal-Mart and it’s good unless I’m super hot. I’m currently trying arm and hammer natural and have primal paste.
Janna Bowling says
Have you heard of Norwex? It’s a direct sales company, but they have microfiber cloths that pick up/remove germs without having to use any chemical sprays. They have a crystal deodorant (a few people have mentioned salt crystal ones in earlier comments) and I just started using it less than a week ago and haven’t noticed any issues. The lady I buy from is named Julie and lives up in McKinney (I’m in Wylie) and has a heart for adoption if you’d like her contact info. She’s amazing! I also just started using their laundry detergent and you only use 1/2 teaspoon per load and it’s also amazing!!!
Lisa says
I’ve been using natural, non-aluminum deodorant for quite a few years, and I’m loving Smarty Pits right now! I get it from Grove Collaborative. The other brand that I’ve loved is Meow Meow Tweet, but it has become cost-prohibitive, as the inexpensive site I used to buy it from no longer carries it. Neither of these have irritated my pits, though both contain baking soda, which some people are sensitive to. I believe Smarty Pits has a baking soda-free formula, though. I don’t smell by morning with these brands, and have had less effective results with Schmidt’s, Tom’s, Native, Primal Pit Paste, and I’m sure I’m forgetting some others (I’ve tried soooo many)!
Ruth says
I’ve been on the natural deodorant kick for awhile now and it was definitely hard to find one!! The first few I tried made me break out into itchy rashes. Another brand was nice but oddly enough it seemed to make me sweat more. I’ve used the same brand for many years now, but I read it may not be so natural after switching owners, but at least it was aluminum free. Based on your recommendation, I tried the primal pit paste and so far it has been my favorite, nice scent, no itching! But, it is difficult to apply. A lot of days in our cold winter months, I don’t apply it. I know, a lot of people might think that’s gross, but I ask those closest to me and they say they never smell anything bad so I understand why some people may go deodorant free, however, I think that method only works if they practice really good daily hygiene!!
Tina says
It’s so comforting to hear a lot of people are struggling with this. I’ve tried several and my clear favorite so far is Native sensitive formula Coconut and Vanilla scent. I like how it goes on, it doesn’t bother my armpits like every other brand, and the smell is really, really good. However, I dislike how wet my armpits feel all the time. I realize there are trade offs, but I am now self-conscious and am constantly checking to see if I smell! I’ve never had this issue with traditional antiperspirant/deodorant. It’s been a bit disheartening. I mean I haven’t switched many other products to natural ingredients – why oh why did I choose my armpits?!?
Kristine says
I just saw some from Costco. Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant. Ever heard of it? Costco usually has good things so this might be worth a try?
Susan says
This post couldn’t come at a more perfect time. I have been using Kopari for about 2 months. I have noticed my pits are red but they are not itchy and don’t hurt but I don’t think they should be red so I have been thinking about switching. I also just feel meh about it because by the end of the day, I feel smelly. Not horrible but noticeable to me. I am thankful for this post because I didn’t know where to do next or what to do. Thank you.

I normally never wear deodorant. I don’t smell, I PROMISE! However, I do notice that depending on my cycle, things can sometimes get a little funky. So, ever since your last post, I started using NATIVE and I really do love it. It hasn’t stained any of my clothing and Target sells my favorite scent, “Lavender & Rose.” Also, I’ve never had any skin irritations. Definitely worth a try! 🙂
Lindsay D. says
I really recommend the Crystal brand of deodorant. They have both an actual crystal that you wet and rub under your arm. I haven’t tried that one, but they also have a roll-on that I use. I only recommend the unscented. About 10 years ago I noticed regular deodorants didn’t work for me anymore. I kept switching to ones that contained higher aluminum thinking that would help. It didn’t! Then I decided to try the natural route. It is the only deodorant that has worked for me!
Kate says
Also love Native! I initially bought their sampler pack to see which scent I preferred (fell in love with one of the fall seasonal which isn’t available anymore!). I did not have any issues with transitioning so perhaps this could be an option for you? Good luck!
Lori Whittington says
Has anyone tried the PiperWai brand? It was on Shark Tank a couple of years ago!
Lauren says
You should try Primally Pure! The charcoal deodorant works wonders. I have tried many natural brands over the last two years and this one has been the best.
Nicole W. says
I have super sensitive underarm skin and have struggled with rashes and redness for years. In the last few months I’ve been using Lume natural deodorant. In the label it says that it is suitable for the whole body (even private parts! :0 ) because it’s so gentle. It goes on clean and has a very light “herbal” scent. I’m so happy that I’ve found this brand and wish I would have schitched to it a long time ago! I haven’t had any problems since. :))
Alex L. says
I swear by Schmidt’s but only their sensitive skin versions. The “normal” versions make me very irritated and bumpy. I’ve noticed I’m not as dry as with traditional deodorants but Schmidt’s sensitive is the best natural deodorant I’ve tried.
Jamie says
I used natives and schmidt’s and both left stains on my tighter t shirts. Has anyone else had this problem?! I’m not a sweaty person, but they look almost like oil stains. I want to find a brand where this isn’t a problem.
Amanda says
Jamie, I also have this problem. I wear a lot of dress blouses for work and find that the natural deodorants leave oily stains on my clothes. I really like the Native and Lavanilla deodorants, but can’t use them on days I go to work. I want to find a brand where this isn’t a problem, too!
Alex L. says
Same!! It’s very annoying!
Sharon A says
So glad you wrote this, and THANK YOU for your honesty! I tried Kopari for a couple of months, but i was always self conscious that I was stinky?! No way to live! And it was sticky. I also tried Schmidt’s but got rashes from it. Badly. I’m allergic to the baking sofa ones. From reading comments here, I think I’ll try Native or lumi (I think that’s what it was called) next.
Amanda @ That Inspired Chick says
Oh my gosh, THESE COMMENTS!!! I’ve got so much I should be doing but instead I sat here for (what felt like) half an hour reading comments! hahahaha I’m a Native girl too but the only one I’ve ever tried was Toms and it wasn’t cuttin’ it for me. (I started my boys on it though…although they think Craig’s deodorant is more manly so they sneak that.) I love Native but I’m super interested in trying the one that smells like cake. 😉
Also, when I made the switch I eased into it instead of going cold turkey. I have no idea if that was “correct” but I would do the natural one one day, then my normal Dove or Secret, then two days with the natural, then the dove or secret and then eventually got to all natural. I never broke out like I was expecting to. But everyone’s body chemistry is so different so who knows.

Since you asked for thoughts…..coming from many dermatologists ~ There are no scientific studies linking deodorant ( aluminum) with breast cancer. Feelings are not facts.

My friend on YouTube mentioned an aluminum free deodorant called “Myro”. I ordered it, but haven’t gotten it yet, it’s caught up in shipping. Maybe since you live on the mainland, you would get yours faster (I live in Hawaii).

I switched to Schmidt’s in 2018 and it was gritty and caked up on my pit. I switched to Native 3 months ago and have loved it so far.

I also found the Kopari wasn’t keeping me dry ugh! I also broke out in a rash from it after a few weeks. Okay, I’ve tried a bunch myself and the only one that works for me is Doterra’s Beautiful deodorant! It smells heavenly too and keeps me dry. It’s all natural and has essential oils in it too.
Dawn Lampkin says
I made the switch to natural deodorant about a year ago. I started with Native, but didn’t love it. I switched to Tom’s And I like it a lot!
angela shields says
I switched from my natural deodorant to kopari because I loved the smell of it. I really wanted it to work but I started smelling by the end of the day. I went back to the natural deodorant I was using before. It is a roll on and it goes on wet but it never bothers me. It’s the brand crystal essence and I use the lavender and white tea scent. I get it at Natural Grocers but they probably have it on amazon. I never smell with it. Thanks for the review. Love your blog!
Erin O’Dell says
One of reasons for the breakouts could be the baking soda that most natural deodorants use. I had the same issue. I use Handcrafted Honeybee’s Smarty Pits. Once I switched to the non baking soda or sensitive skin formula I’ve had no issues. I’m an Esthetician and am obsessed with ingredients and what they do for our skin!
Chaeli says
Native Deodorant. 100%. I have tried allllll the others. Native goes on smoothly and has amazing scents and actually works!!!!
Savannah says
You’ve got to try Native!
Julie says
Love Native! From the website. Been using about 6 months and doing great with it despite sensitive skin. One thing I do that helps me is to try to wait a few minutes to apply it after a shower/shaving if at all possible. If I have time I’ll wait about 10 minutes and do other stuff to be getting ready while I wait. Set it out right in front of you on the counter so you won’t forget, ha! If I do this I have no trouble, otherwise it might sting just a bit after shaving. I use the regular, but the sensitive skin version is available in several scents. If I started to experience any issues I would try that version to see how it compared.
Sarah Anikpo says
Schmidts from Target keeps me dry. I tried Toms of Maine, Trader Joe’s and a crystal stick that you wet before using and I was wet and smelly by the end of the day with all the others.
Stacy says
I have tried them all…but Native was my winner. I run a lot and this one keeps me from stinking. My Target just started carrying it which is a huge bonus. Try the coconut vanilla. On days I stay in I spritz a concoction of rosemary and lavender eo mixed with acv and water. Great post—here’s to hoping all women make the switch to natural.
Melanie says
My favorite so far has been a recipe I found on Pinterest! Baking soda, cornstarch, coconut oil and I added peppermint oil!

I have found that Schmidt’s (only the Geranium scent) works the best to keep me dry and doesn’t break me out. I would like to find another brand to use as well because my skin typically gets used to a deodorant and it becomes less effective so I was happy to see your post about the different types you have tried that worked. Can’t wait to try them!

I am so passionate about this topic!! I think it’s so interesting how each person’s unique experience can really make or break their success. I do NOT like Tom’s OR Native AT ALL… but I’m a gal who sweats more than the average. Someone also may have mentioned this one (I didn’t read through all the comments) but I LOVE Piperwai. It comes in a jar or they have a roll-on that I love. It is gray… so I don’t love to wear it with white. If I’m wearing white, I use the Jason brand and keep it on my purse if I feel like I need an extra swipe later on in the day. 🙂

Lume deodorant is great! I have tried others such as Schmidt’s and Native, but they caused pretty severe rash and irritation. Lume contains arrowroot instead of baking soda and thus no breakouts. It comes in both a scented and unscented version, and in both a traditional underarm applicator and a tube. I’ve not showered since Friday morning (been sick all weekend) and still smell fresh – I just checked! It can even be used to control odor of feet, private parts, “underboobs”, etc.

I love Native deodorant as well as Little Seed Farm. LSF has an awesome story behind it and they have a bunch of great products. Their deo is also a cream, but I don’t mind it so much. My fav scent is grapefruit lemon. Plus you can get free samples to see if you like it before buying!! I like LSF better, but use Native when I’m in a rush and want to use a conventional deo stick.

For many years, I have been using safer products in all aspects of my life. As for natural deodorant, I have liked Real Purity Deodorant that I order on Amazon. It holds up for me in the summer months and after working out. It’s a little expensive, but so is everything that goes against the typical chemical loaded products that are acceptable in the US, but not other countries.

Just want to say that I have actually been deodorant-free for about a decade!! I can think of a few occasions where I’ve needed a quick scrub to get through the rest of the day, but I don’t smell, promise!!! Once you detox… it’s like your body adjusts and deodorant just isn’t necessary anymore. I always suggest this to friends who are struggling with their natural deodorant searches. 🙂

I have tried a lot of different brands and made my own and Native is by far my favorite!

This may sound strange but I read on Reddit that skin care acids work better as a non-aluminum deodorant than the natural versions. I was skeptical, but after some googling I gave it a try. Sure enough, they work great! My biggest problem with all natural deodorants is that I feel like I stink at the end of the day so I picked up the $4 red jar of Stridex pads (I originally tried this with a lactic acid toner I use on my face just to experiment and once I realized it worked, had to find something a little more cost effective than my beloved P50!). I give my armpits a couple swipes in the morning and to my amazement, they work great! No more odor at all! I was kind of amazed. It has been a year of using a stridex pad a day on my armpits and I’ve haven’t felt the need to ever go back to deodorant! Primal Pit Paste gives me such an itchy rash, and I was concerned about Stridex being too harsh but I’ve experienced no irritation at all.

I have tried all of these plus some and Native sensitive is by far my favorite! Order it directly from their website. Schmidt’s sensitive is my second choice!!

Another vote for Lavanila from Sephora! It’s so good and I like that I don’t have to use my fingers to apply.

I love Schmidt’s! I used to be a Dove or Degree girl but I made the switch to Schmidt’s and after detoxing for a week and then trying it I have had no issues with a rash. They have a sensitive line too! To me, their scents are the best, it’s in a typical deodorant stick and keeps me dry! Their charcoal & magnesium, lavender & sage, and bergamot & lime are my three favorites. I tried Tom’s a long time ago but found out that it is not in fact natural so I stopped that!
Jill says
I started with Schmidt’s for sensitive skin and loved it but after about a year it started not being as effective. So I tried Native… it broke me out! Ugh!! So just recently I’ve started using Primally Pure in lemongrass. So far, so good! I’m also ordering a facial serum and a face spray from them so I’ll keep you posted!!
Peggy says
I have tried Native which I could almost eat it smells so good BUT it does not keep me dry! I really wanted to work because you can get it at Target now. ?
Amanda says
Just started using Lume! Their Instagram add hooked me. Its not just for pits, lol. You can use it on all your parts. So far its great and has no baking soda so no rashes.

Rosypits by mega babe. I was super skeptical, but my regular deodorant just quit working, so decided it was time to take the plunge for natural. I’m very active and live in the south. I broke out the first 2 weeks, but haven’t had any issues since. Totally works and the applicator is cute too.
You should try it!
Carrie B Sandersfeld says
Love Native! My skin breaks out easily from deodorant and I have never had an issue with this one.
Dana Jackson says
I made the switch to Native a year ago and never had a break out and I am very happy with the brand! You only need a few swipes so it lasts a while also! Love the lavender and rose, fig and honey, and cucumber mint scents the best!!
Corbie says
Love this post! I have tried a lot of them too and I would say Native and Schmidts are my favorites. BUT after readying the comments I just learned that the Target Native has an ingredient change so… I may now order directly from them. Love reading the comments and learning new things!
Erica says
Tried Native for a month but felt like I had to reapply midday and I smelled worse than when using the chemical filled stuff. Also noticed red bumps under one arm which in the winter isn’t so bad but wouldn’t be thrilled if they stuck around in the summer. Started using Fatco about three weeks ago and I’m loving it! No bumps, I stay dry, and no need to reapply. I purchased in the tube from target which seems to be better than old packaging in a jar. Review I read says that Thrive Market sells the least expensive option for $10 as its $12 for one oz at target.
Kendra says
Native is my favorite! No rash and fun sents! It is free shipping and they just released it at Target but limited sents. It does make you sweat which is a good thing but it smells yummy at least! I love it and am hooked!
Rene' Pingel says
You and Erika got me on this all natural deodorant kick. I tried Tom’s a long time ago, and did not like it. When you introduced this, I went without deodorant for four weeks–yes four weeks. I really detoxed. I went to Target, got Native in the Jasmine & Cedar scent for fall and winter, and I love it. I have never broken out in a rash. For the summer I will get the coconut fragrance.
Melissa says
I’m a Schmidt’s fan!! Switched to that about 3 years ago. It comes in the jar that you apply with your fingers, as well as a twist up solid. I love the solid. Lavender is my favorite, but Whole Foods has been selling a seasonal scent called ‘Snowfall’….which is a light powder scent. I bought one, and went back to buy another before they’re gone for the season!

Now that Kensington is getting older are there any stores she likes to shop for clothes in. My daughter recently turned 10 and is not wanting to shop at little kid stores anymore.
Mix and Match Mama says
She likes Crew Cuts (the J Crew kids store), Gap, Vineyard Vine, Nordstrom, Boden and stuff like that!
Lindsey says
I’ve tried probably seven or so natjo deodorants and am stuck on Native right now. While I think I have a hard time staying dry with natural, this works the best to hide the scent.
Lori says
I use Native too! I like it better than Toms and Schmidt’s for dryness. I did the detox week before I jumped in after reading your last blog, but I found switching between brands also caused me to break out horribly. That’s my word of warning – watch switching between even natural brands too.
Excited to give three and four a try though too!
Marne says
All natural deodorants made with baking soda made my armpits turn black or gave me a rash. It was so disappointing and not very attractive. I found one that is made with magnesium and it’s been awesome!

In the summer she has a strawberry scented one…I love it!!

I haven’t read through all of the comments but I LOVE Native deodorant!! I have been using it for almost a year and it’s amazing! I live in Florida and sweat 10 months out of the year. You can get it in either stick or jar form. Their scents are divine, I dont feel like I sweat and it keeps me dry. I have also used Lemongrass Spa deodorants and liked it as well. Ohh you can buy Native at Target which is super convenientz. They don’t sell as many of the scents that the Native website sells but it’s so nice to be able to grab it when I am there.

Primally Pure is the best I have found.
Nicole Bane says
Milk & Honey makes a stick version now! I loved Native, but like the M&H cream I tried (before the stick was available) I got red dots that wouldn’t go away. I guess I need to try the sensitive Native
Option. Also, I learned that most men’s deodorants don’t have aluminum. In the summers I wear my husbands Old Spice to hold up against the Texas heat.
Katherine says
Primally Pure!! I’ve tried so many and this is THE one! Primally Pure keeps me smelling great all day (currently using Tea Tree and love it)! I did break out with a little rash at first but it was short lived and mild. I haven’t had an issue since. I’m not a spokesperson, just really believe in their products. Also, the Everything Spray is a miracle in a bottle, definitely read up on that too!!!

You must try the “Thai” crystal. It really works! It kills the bacteria that causes odor. You can use it on your underarms & feet. It gets great reviews. You can buy it at Whole Foods or on Amazon.

I switched to natural deodorant 2 months ago… went straight from Old Spice men’s (that I’ve been using for 8+ years) to Primally Pure’s natural deodorant – specifically the Blue Tansy scent. No rash. No stinky detox phase. It’s literal perfection in my book. I’m a sweaty/stinky person & I workout at orange theory 5x/week – my pits don’t stink after the workouts. Love the ingredients and the business! Have so many of their skincare products – I’m obsessed!

I’m a frequent reader but never comment. However, as a chemistry teacher with a physiology background, I want to echo the comments citing the lack of evidence linking aluminum in deodorant with cancer. Moreover, the more important fallacy is the idea that natural is better. Some of the most toxic substances to humans are natural/plant derived. We have an unhealthy fear of anything that sounds “too chemical” and we forget that substances like water and oxygen are chemicals, too. Living things are just bodies of chemicals! ALL substances have a toxic level (including water). It is the dosing that determines the poison – not whether it was naturally derived or synthetically created. Start by reading about chemical myths. It is easy to see why so much misinformation is spread online. Anecdotal evidence is not peer-reviewed evidence. I’d argue we too quickly assume safety with “natural” products for which there is little/no data to support their efficacy or lack of toxicity.

yes! Thank you for posting this. Pharmacist here. No evidence. None.

Kai Naturals! I think I have tried them all but this one does not leave my armpits sensitive and goes on super smooth like regular deodorant. It is a bit more pricy but totally worth it! They also have this detox armpit bar soap that I use occasionally and I think its helps a lot.

I have been on the same quest for 3 years and I had terrible rashes. I think ??I found the one. LUME!!!! Love it and it can be used on private parts too. No baking soda
Kate says
I swear by Lavilin bio balance that I order on amazon. Not to be confused with lavanila!! It’s different! It’s a cream in a pot, but also comes with a small plastic application stick so you don’t have to use your fingers. After adjusting your body to the deodorant by applying every other day or so you will end up just needing to apply weekly. It was developed years ago for soldiers to use! It’s incredible.

When I started using natural deoderant I tried so many kinds too. And most of them made me break out. My skin doesn’t love baking soda or arrowroot powder. The two that never made me break out are: Piper Weird original charcoal deoderant, but I had the same issues as your favorite (dark color and white shirts). Then a friend got me to try the Sprouts brand Mineral Salt Deoderant spray. It goes on wet, so I apply after I shower. It’s amazing. No rashes, no residue. When we moved there weren’t any sprouts nearby. I started order the Thai Crystal Deoderant Spray on Amazon, it has the same ingredients, and it works just as well. It even stood up to two Florida summers!

I really like the Native it took a bit of time for my body to adjust but once it did it now works.

Hello! I love Schmidt’s rose and vanilla deodorant. It smells really good and it lasts even when I sweat. I get it at Target.

I switched from Dove to Native. I will never go back!! I used a charcoal face mask from PureHaven (an all non-toxic skin care line) in my armpits to detox. My transition that way wasn’t too bad.

Do terra essential oil deodorant is the only thing that I have found that works for me.
Lauren says
I haven’t read through all the suggestions, but I bought doTerra’s deodorant a few months ago after using the heck out of some essential oils. I’ve loved it. I FEEL like it’s safer for me than regular deodorant and I haven’t been smelly. The ultimate test will be in a South Georgia summer, but for the winter it’s working just fine!
Jennifer Robertson says
No one will probably agree with me, but there really isn’t any scientific evidence that non-natural deodorant is dangerous. I just don’t understand the need for the switch. https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/myths/antiperspirants-fact-sheet
Allena Gurley says
I wouldn’t normally talk about essential oils but knowing you already use them, I use the Young Living deodorant. I think it works as well as any other natural deodorant I’ve tried over the years and I really like the smell. Plus I just really trust the company so I’m not worried about hidden ingredients. I saw a lot of comments with brands I’ve never heard of so it does make me really curious!
Kelli Bueker says
I saw someone mention this above too – but the Young Living Thieves toothpaste is a great deodorant! It tried the YL deodorant and it didn’t work well for me, but I may give it another shot. I also made my own using the bentonite clay, Purification and Petitgrain and I really liked it. I had the problem of it turning my clothes gray though.
Paige says
Schmidt’s! Lime + Bergamot scent. I have really sensitive skin and have never once broken out into a rash using this. They sell it at Target and every once and while you can find it at Costco too!
Emily Donlon says
Try Megababe Rosy Pits!! It smells great, has never caused a reaction on my super sensitive skin, and it lasts for months!!!
