Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, my family loves to make (and eat!) Haystacks! I don’t know what it is, but those peanut buttery butterscotch bites just put us in the holiday mood. When we started eating g-free at our house, we had to get creative with our Haystacks, so instead of the traditional crispy chow mein noodles, we used Cheerios 🙂 . Not only was this a super simple substitution, it was just as easy too! We use plain old regular Cheerios, but you could go nuts and use one of the other varieties too! The sky’s the limit with our new g-free Haystacks!

G-Free Haystacks!
Description
Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, my family loves to make (and eat!) Haystacks! I don’t know what it is, but those peanut buttery butterscotch bites just put us in the holiday mood. When we started eating g-free at our house, we had to get creative with our Haystacks, so instead of the traditional crispy chow mein noodles, we used Cheerios 🙂 .
Ingredients
- 4 cups Cheerios
- 1 (11 oz) package butterscotch chips
- 2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
Instructions
- I like to lay wax paper on my counter for the Haystacks to cool.
- In a microwavable bowl, melt the butterscotch chips and peanut butter together (stirring every 30 seconds).
- Next, stir your Cheerios into the melted butterscotch mixture.
- After that, drop by tablespoon fulls onto wax paper to set (one hour).
- We like to store these in an airtight container or gallon-sized baggie when not enjoying.
Notes
We used plain Cheerios, but you can certainly mix and match it with the other varieties too!

Just an FYI, Cheerios are not celiac safe. It is confusing and long learning process.
KimW says
They are – certified gluten free.
Cori says
Definitely not safe for those with Celiac disease. The “certification” on these isn’t real, and is all monetary based as General Mills sponsers the association that “certifies” them. There have been thousands of people, mostly children, who have gotten incredibly sick from eating them. Cheerios aren’t properly tested for gluten, nor do they use oats that are properly gluten free. i would recommened looking into this and making your own decision, but many Celiac sites and associations agree that they are unsafe for those with Celiac disease. Even Canada won’t let the “gluten free” be on the packages, but the USA will.

Yum! I’m going to try these with Sunbutter (peanut allergies here).

Yum! My family does a rice Krispy treat with a bag of butterscotch chips a cup of pb (melt together) add 6 cups or Rice Krispies. Then just put in a 9×14 pan, chill in the fridge and serve. This sounds similar!

I’m going to try this with All Bran cereal for extra fiber and a more traditional shape – thanks for the idea!

We have made these every single year growing up… except we use corn flakes. They are amazing! You should try that too, also g-free 🙂

Love that idea!!!!
Katie says
I’ve seen a number of comments suggesting corn flakes as a gluten free option. Please be advised that any cereal that contains barley or malt syrup/flavoring is not gluten free. That includes rice krispies too.

This looks similar to “Cheerios Treats” we make in our house which is:
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup light corn syrup
melt together and add 6 cups of Cheerios

You had me at corn syrup 😉 .
