The Bestie Breakdown: EPISODE 1


What? What?  Erika and I are totally stepping out of our comfort zones today and sharing the first episode of our new podcast with you!

We’ve been talking about hosting a podcast for about six months now and today, we’re finally doing it.  A few little tidbits before you take a listen.

First, we wanted you guys to be able to get to know us a bit more and in a different way.  There is more info actually in the podcast about our goals/intentions, but we’re going to aim for content that isn’t on our blogs because we don’t want to just repeat what you read on here, but we want to chat about other things in our lives from food to pop culture and in this episode, why we hate swimsuit shopping in February and thoughts on the gala we’re working on (total girlfriend/random/fun stuff!).

The second thing is that we are not technologically gifted, so there was a learning curve with this first episode.  We know it’s not perfect, but thanks to Jane (our amazing friend and coworker), it’s up and running and we’re hopeful that in the future, it will get better and better each time.  Really, you just need to listen 🙂 .

    Love the podcast! Try titlenine.com for swimsuits! My Instagram ads have been on point for sucking me into things and Title Nine is one that I’m so glad they did! I am constantly on the look out for great board shorts and they have the most perfect ones that are fully lined so you don’t need bottoms too which I think are perfect for an active tropical vacation! They also have great dresses that you can move in! Note on the swimsuits though the band size was right but I had to do one cup size down from what they recommended!

    Good for you two for getting out of your comfort zone and trying something new! I listened to some of the show on my way to work and as far as Athleta suits- I noticed when shopping online this month that even the model wearing the “high coverage” bottom has some bum hanging out. I guess that’s a thing now even in what looks like the most modest bottom.

    I am listening now and we just got back from a Caribbean cruise two weeks ago and that must be how they’re making bathing suits now. I cannot tell you how many women’s butt cheeks I saw. In shape and not in shape and they didn’t care. I am 38 years old and I would never be able to wear a suit like that even if I was super fit. Not going to happen lol

    1. I was planning on making your maple orange salmon tonight but I realized I forgot to pick up the maple syrup on our weekly grocery trip yesterday. I have agave nectar. do you think I could sub with that? Do you think it would still taste ok? Thanks for the help!

    Random comment! I’m making your crock pot Chicken A La King for dinner tonight for the first time. Excited to see how it turns out, although I can’t imagine it will rank up with your crock pot Beef Stroganoff which is my absolute favorite. Appreciate the recipes as they’re my go-to “cook book”.

    So exciting! I love podcasts. The Big Boo cast had an episode release today too!
    Loved the conversation on dogs and Shay saying she lives in a pet store. I have one dog – 75 lb 10 year old German Shepherd. My daughters have each been asking for their own little dogs. I’d love to have some little dogs, but the clean up!? Seriously, can’t we train our dogs like the cat in Meet the Parents who goes in the toilet????‍♀️

    Two sisters in my town have a podcast: Welcome to the fam podcast. They are hysterical! You will love them. They will tell you to skip the first couple of episodes and start with the third or fourth episode.

    It’s interesting to hear your voices! My only feedback right now is why the lag time between one of you asking a question and another one talking? Can’t wait to hear future episodes!

      I had trouble getting past the lag time too- I’m assuming that will get better though? I loved hearing your voices and getting to know the interactions between the two of you!

        We’re trying to fix that! It records our voices independently of each other…so then every time we played it back, they weren’t lining up!

    Great first episode! Your office/laundry room being a pet store had me cracking up! And the fact that Erika would rather hold her arms and hands up instead of petting a sweet dog because her mom had her believing all dogs were dirty! I don’t know why, but I was laughing so much about that too! I have got to read that Jessica Simpson book. It sounds so interesting!

    And because you talked about Mix and Match Travel in your podcast….For those that like to travel, I have to put my two cents in and say they definitely need to use your travel agency! We haven’t even gone on our trip yet–we leave in October, but we’ve been planning this cruise & land portion trip since July I think of last year, and my husband and I have made two major changes (one due to moving & work issues, and one just because of preference), and we are not charged anything for the planning. Shay has been a dream to work with and she literally does ALL the work! She has taken care of booking the cruise, the airfare, the hotels in perfect locations that are in safe areas in Europe, all the transfers, to and from the hotels, airport and cruise port. Shay is also providing recommendations and tips on sites to see on our land portion, and how to purchase the tickets early and skip the lines. It’s all so organized and I just can’t believe how easy she has made this for us! I am so excited for this trip in October, and I hope others will take advantage of all that Mix and Match Travel Agency can do for them when it comes to planning their next travel adventure!

      We’re working on that! We are definitely a work in progress. It speeds up and down too making it sound like we’re talking on top of each other or with weird pauses. It’s a MESS…BUT, we’re going to get it figured out!

    I loved listening to your podcast…it got me through my 30 min workout on my bowflex max. ? I had to laugh When you guys talked about how Erika doesn’t carry a purse. My BFF is the same way. My purse has everything in it from baby wipes (my kids are 22 & 17 ?) to dental floss. When we go places my BFF walks out with just her phone. I don’t know how she does it. My purse is like my security blanket. ? Have a great rest of your week. We are off to Vegas for a long weekend with my BFF and her hubby…celebrating me turning 50!!!

    Is there a way to make this a video or put closed caption on it? I’m hearing impaired so I can’t understand listening to podcast without seeing the faces.

      Hi, I’m a retired court reporter, and if you would like to have your podcasts close-captioned, let me know. It would be a little bit of a learning curve for me too, since I’ve always worked in court, but I’d be happy to try. After all, I’m planning to listen to all of them, so I might as well make myself useful!

    Here are a few podcasts I recommend, they might help you ease into the podcast world.
    Oprah Supersoul conversations (because Oprah), Sibling Revelry (Kate and Oliver Hudson they interview other siblings or interesting people), and Juicy Scoop with Heather McDonald (comedian who talks celeb gossip, reality shows, and is just fun).

    LOVE this!! I am so excited you all are doing a podcast.. too much fun!! I am a HUGE podcast listener and i’m throwing out ideas :). I think you should touch upon your blogs, this is why your readers love you and Erika b/c of what you write.. i think you all could do a deep dive into some of your topics that you are only able to write a little bit on due to space. I also LOVE the idea of having some of your besties in town who blog and those who don’t.. LOVE seeing your people and listening to them.. just my two cents :).

    Try Lands End for bathing suits. Different styles available in tops and bottoms. Their Starfish pants are great too.

    I love podcasts!!! You should definitely start listening to Jamie Ivey & Annie Downs podcast! Also, regarding swimsuits..I have been very impressed with Target’s swimsuit collection this year! Maybe give them a try!

      Agree about the long pauses. I kept wondering if my phone cut out…and then Erika would eventually speak. Also, the difference in the volume of your voices was significant. When Erika would speak after a pause, it would almost blow my airpods out!! I’m sure Jane will get it all sorted out?

        Thank you for the encouragement! We recorded it and then realized it didn’t produce the sound automatically together…we’re a work in progress but we’ll figure it out!!

    Yay for promoting my state of Alaska and how beautiful it is!! After the cruise (or many folks do this before they cruise), I highly encourage them to spend some quality time on land exploring some beautiful areas like Denali National Park. My own town of Eagle River is spectacular and the hiking is out of this world!!

    It was a fun listen. Definitely some long pauses. Maybe you need to record it together? Anyway, I’m hoping it’s in the Apple Podcasts and will be listening in the future.

    You should check out the Young House Love podcast (also on Instagram). My latest one is At home with Linda and Drew Scott. It’s a fun listen. If you want a frightening one, try Dr Death. He was a doctor practicing in Plano and Dallas.

    Such fun, Shay and Erika! I love feeling the love, support, humor and bestie friendship you two share! My bestie and I met 51 1/2 years ago, on our first day of college sorority rush. We’ve lived many states away from each other since 1/2 way through our sophomore year, but we adore each other like you to do!
