Hello, Monday!
Over the last year or so, we’ve updated our kitchen a little here and there…right now, I think it’s totally updated and we’re finished 🙂 . Our kitchen expands the entire house (we have both windows facing the front and windows facing the back), and it’s where we spend most of our time (especially me!). In fact, I’m typing this right now from the bar in the kitchen. So, I wanted to brighten and lighten things up a bit while still keeping it “cozy” (because you know that’s my jam!).
Here are a few pics of the finished product along with any sources you might want.
If you forgot, here is what it looked like before (minus the fall decorations)…
…I still love it, but it was a bit dark.
Now…
…just a bit brighter!!
Here’s another before…
…and now…
…yay!! I am so happy with the changes!
So, here’s a quick rundown of what we did…
1: We replaced all of the Alaska White granite with quartz in “Calcutta”.
2: We repainted all of the cabinets. Originally, the island was painted this blue/gray Sherwin-Williams mix and then “antiqued” with a black stain while the other cabinets were cream and “antiqued” with a brown stain. We sanded and repainted all of the cabinets. The island is still a blue/gray combo (just not “antiqued”) and the other cabinets are now a nice, bright Sherwin-Williams paint called Antique White (which is our trim color in the entire house, our wall color throughout the house is Sherwin-Williams Kilim-Beige) and also not “antiqued”.
3: We replaced the barstools and have these now.
4: We replaced the light fixtures over the sink and have these now.
5: We replaced the faucet with this one.
6: We replaced the knobs and pulls.
7: We replaced the handles on the fridge with these.
8: We bought a new rug from Builders Carpet & Design Center here in McKinney.
9: We bought the new doorknob here.
So, there you go! I wish I could have you all over for coffee and a bundt cake 🙂 .
Don’t forget, you can check out my Home FAQ post and my Home Q&A post if you have other questions about things around our house and also our Everything Yard post too!
Happy Monday! xo

I love the changes!!! It definitely brightens up the space and gives it a fresh feel! Thanks for sharing!!!

Lauren says
LOVE it! Absolutely beautiful and SO much brighter! A few questions:
1. When you walk in your front door, can you see your kitchen? I’d love a “front entry/foyer tour”!
2. The fridge behind the cabinets… Is it just your average fridge and they custom build the cabinets around it? Or do you have to buy a special fridge?
3. We are renovating our kitchen this fall and haven’t decided on a countertop material… How do you like quartz?
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you, Lauren! Okay, 1. No, you cannot see the kitchen from the entry. 2. Yes, it’s a subzero that has custom wood doors on top of it. 3. I love quartz (and granite!) for the kitchen. I don’t want to have to be careful/babysit my counters. You can sit hot pans right on them and they don’t etch, stain or scar.
Christine says
Hi…it looks great. What brand of quartz? We have been looking at different brands/colors for our remodel this summer. You mention hot pans on quartz…we have been told no pans hotter then 350 can be placed on quartz, but pans hotter then 350 can be on granite? Just curious if it was brand specific. Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t know about a brand, we went to the stone store here and picked out slabs. It’s called “calcutta”. We sit hot things on our granite and quartz every single day without any problems!
Lori says
Beautiful kitchen! Our new countertops are coming tomorrow! We had to gut our kitchen due to a dishwasher flood in January 🙁 I’m curious about shelf liners in kitchen cabinets. Do you use them? If so, what do you recommend?
Mix and Match Mama says
I do not! I used to use them in my other homes, but when we built this one, I didn’t want to add them to my freshly painted cabinets, so I didn’t. Also, is there anything more frustrating than lining cabinets? I can’t think of one 😉 .
Alexis deZayas says
It’s crazy how big of a difference a little change in your space can make! Love it!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you, Alexis!
Erika Slaughter says
I LOVE it!! I think all the gold touches are my favorite part!
Kristen says
Love the changes! Did you guys refinish the cabinets yourselves?
Mix and Match Mama says
Our house painter did!
Charmaine Ng | Architecture & Lifestyle Blog says

Thank you, Charmaine!
E says
It’s very pretty! I really like the new counters. Have you considered recessed lights in the ceiling to brighten it up more? I see you use lots of lamps.
Mix and Match Mama says
We have it! I love the glow lamps give off more, but we have recessed lighting throughout too.
Beth Knecht says
So cute! Love your new adjustments!
Do you have a new favorite of the whole process?
Mix and Match Mama says
I think I would say the hardware. I love it all, but that really made everything POP!
Bev says
Beautiful! The last photo especially shows how much brighter your new kitchen is, love it!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you, Bev!!!
Dana says
It looks great, Shay!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thanks, Dana!
Kristen says
Good Morning! Random question from previous post. Where are your outdoor lanterns from that are on the outdoor dining table? Been on the hunt for good outdoors ones! Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
Those are Pottery Barn and are still available!
Kerrie Hofstad says
I love it so much! Now I can’t wait for the Mix and Match Travel Agency update!
Mix and Match Mama says
Me too! Me too!
Danette says
Hi Shay! Your kitchen is stunning!! LOVE all the changes! Question – how do you keep the rug in you kitchen clean, and where is your trash can? Hope you have the best day!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I hope YOU have the best day too! Okay, I have two trashcans. I have one under the kitchen sink and one of the pullout drawers is also a trashcan. The rug is probably not as spot-free as you would think…but that’s why I always get one that’s busy/has texture to camouflage it.
Tracy says
Do you have two dishwashers?! Dreamy!
Mix and Match Mama says
I do! If you had me name the best decision I made when building my house, I would without a doubt say that.
Aubree Browning says
I was about to ask the same thing! Genius!!! Tucking that idea away for when we build.
Mix and Match Mama says
Seriously, best idea. 😉
Jaime Matherson says
Oooooh I LOVE your kitchen! It’s so pretty! Could you do a Q and A post about your kids rooms.
Mix and Match Mama says
That would be a fun post!! YES!
Melissa says
Yes, please add a tour of their playroom ASAP 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
We really don’t have a play room any more. They’re too big. Boo.
Adrienne says
Do you find that the white quartz stains easily?
Mix and Match Mama says
Nope! That’s why I picked quartz over marble. It’s so durable and doesn’t stain.
Adrienne says
Awesome thank you! Considering it for bathroom countertops and was worried about make up staining it. ?
Mix and Match Mama says
I would go with it!!
Sarah Shaneyfelt says
Love it, Shay! I love your new kitchen cabinet color with the new countertops!
MeetTheShaneyfelts
dianne says
what are your counter tops?
Mix and Match Mama says
Those are the quartz in Calcutta.
dianne says
is it a specific color? Is it a solid color?
we are trying to find a counter top and overwhelmed. We want a warm look
Mix and Match Mama says
Our quartz? It’s the one called Calcutta. We picked out the slabs from that line.
Cindy Garbe says
You have a beautiful home!!! I would love to know more about your walk-in closet. It looks like you have 3 levels of hanging clothes, which I’ve never seen before. Do you have a tool that allows you to reach the top rod? We are just building a house and I am interested to learn more about what you have done. Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
We have a library ladder for the third row!
Sheaffer Sims says
The kitchen looks AMAZING!!!! My favorite part? Those gorgeous light fixtures! And listen, you might not can have everybody, but you can definitely have me over for bundt cake. I’m free all week.
Mix and Match Mama says
Come on over friend! I’ll make any one of them that doesn’t have banana in it 😉 .
DANIELLE K RIGG says
Looks BEAUTIFUL!!!! How long and hard of a process to sand and paint the cabinets? We are looking for new barstools, the fight in our house is backless vs having a back. Why did you go backless?
Mix and Match Mama says
We didn’t do it, our favorite local house painter came in and did it all (including the pantry and butler’s pantry) in 2.5 days.I like backless barstools because they tuck in under the counters and out of the way. To me, they’re more visually appealing.
Ahna @ Hammers N Hugs says
Those lights – every time. Love them. Well done with your kitchen!! Is your stove a Viking? I would love to hear a breakdown on your stove! I am researching a lot of different options for when we build and at this point I am leaning toward an Ilve, but I would love to hear your stove thoughts and suggestions?! Happy Monday!!
Mix and Match Mama says
It is a Viking! I always wanted one, researched them myself and have been so pleased with it. I have zero complaints and would buy it again.
Kalynn says
I’m curious how you go about keeping a rug clean in the kitchen. I’m scared to do it!
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s why I always get a rug that’s “busy”. It’s probably not super spot-free.
Lindsay Tingler says
Looks beautiful! I love light and bright!=)
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you!!!!
Pamela says
Would love to see a ‘What’s in the cabinets” post! So much great space.
Mix and Match Mama says
That would be fun!!!
Elizabeth Kelley says
I love it! I really appreciate that you went lighter on a few things instead of going to the farm house trend. I love pops of color and little details. Well done! Just also want to say that I’ve been reading your blogs for years and I look forward to all your posts!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh my goodness, thank YOU! This made me smile so big!!! xo
Wendy Hicks says
I LOVE it!!!! Really pretty
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you!!!!!
Karah Stracener says
I love all the kitchen updates. It looks so good!!! We are about to do a total kitchen renovation and gut our kitchen. Its all overwhelming but I am excited to start the process. Do you like quartz better than granite?
Mix and Match Mama says
I think I like it equal. We also have other countertops in our house (marble and travertine), but granite and quartz are both just so durable.
Ashley says
Would you mind sharing the company that repainted your cabinets?
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s not a company, it’s our local painter that paints everything in my house. I adore him! Email me if you’re local for his info.
Genevieve says
Love it! It’s so fresh and bright! Where did you get your glass apothecary jar from?
Mix and Match Mama says
Hobby Lobby!
Caitlin says
Wow, the kitchen looks even more beautiful! What are you doing with the old kitchen hardware? My husband and I are redoing our kitchen and I would be willing to buy the pulls and knobs off of you.
Mix and Match Mama says
We kept the old hardware!! I have no doubt that it will be back at some point and I might want to switch again, so we kept it. Ha!
Kassy says
It looks so inviting! Will you be updating your laundry room now that you are building a separate office space?
Mix and Match Mama says
No, that will just be a workstation area for the kiddos!
Leslie S says
That’s an awesome idea!
Serena W. says
It looks beautiful, I love it all!!!! Still cozy but with a fresh little update! That hardware really brings it all together and makes it pop!!!
Debbie says
Looks beautiful!
Debbie says
That kitchen is a dream!! No wonder you love cooking so much, it’s perfect!!
Susy says
Yes to Bundt cake! With the extra time for baking I just made a Meyer’s Lemon Rhubarb Bundt cake. Egg whites gave it an amazing lift and lightness. A little sea salt gave it an added surprise crunch here and there. Olive oil gave it a lovely taste combined with the tartness of the rhubarb!
Love your Bundt cakes too!
Kelly says
Your kitchen is beautiful, Shay! The eye to detail really makes it special:).
Julie says
Is your bread board blue!?! Did you paint it or did you buy it that way? If you bought it, where did you get it? Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
Isn’t it so pretty?! Follow @caitlinwilsondesign on Instagram! It’s from her shop! She’s local here and I love her things.
Julie says
This looks beautiful! I love the ‘French Country’ look and love that you made some on trend refreshes. Having two dishwashers is brilliant. That is a goal for my dream kitchen! Plus a pizza oven lol. Enjoy it and thanks for starting off our week with something cheerful and fun. I can’t wait to see your travel agency once it’s done! Have a good week.
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwww! Thank you so much, Julie!!
MelanieL says
I’ve always loved your kitchen! It looks great with the updates. 🙂
Suzanne Lane says
Hi Shay! Love your kitchen updates. We want to have our countertops replaced and our cabinets painted but we are having trouble finding a good paint contractor. Would you mind sharing your painters’ contact information?
Mix and Match Mama says
If you’re local, email me and I’d be happy to share his info! He’s super sweet!
Vivian says
Everything looks amazing. Did you have to change doorknobs all around your house or just the kitchen? I am taking notes for when we build our home one day.
Mix and Match Mama says
I’ve changed a few over the years, but no, I focused just on the kitchen this time!
Amie says
Love everything especially the gold pulls, knobs and lights. I want to use gold as well but was unsure with the oven, sink and dishwasher being stainless. Also the door hinges, did you change those out as well or leave them as they were?
Mix and Match Mama says
Left them!
Michelle says
So pretty! Any chance your window treatment fabric is still available or can be found!?
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh boo! It’s pretty old, so I doubt it.
Lori says
It’s lovely, Shay! So bright & cheery!
Wish KS wasn’t so far away, a slice of your Bundt cake would be so good right now!
Jenna Zavoral says
Beautiful! Did you paint the cabinets or did you hire it out?
Mix and Match Mama says
The man who always paints our house (rooms and such) did it!
Jane says
Looks like you missed something when proofreading! Your list of 10 changes is actually only 9 things as you skipped number 3. Kitchen looks great though!
Mix and Match Mama says
OF course I did. Geez! I am correcting that right now!
Amanda @ That Inspired Chick says
I LOVE all that gold hardware!! It all looks beautiful! I may need to text you about your painter’s info! I’ve been wanting to have my kitchen cabinets painted for long!
That Inspired Chick
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh my gosh, do! You will love him!!
Jaren says
It’s so beautiful! We switched all our kitchen granite to Soprano quartz a few years ago, and I absolutely love it! My kitchen cabinets could definitely use a paint touch up. I also have mine the color of my trim. Question: Did they just order new cabinet doors and paint them or did they paint your existing doors?
Mix and Match Mama says
He sanded and painted the existing doors!
STEPHANIE SANDERS says
I’m in love with your new cabinet hardware! Who knew gold would make it’s way back in style? Gorgeous!
Mix and Match Mama says
Right?!
Kristin says
We are about to do a similar update and I have a question about your sink?? Does it scratch easily? What brand is it?? Thanks so much!
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s the original sink and no, it doesn’t scratch! I love it!! It’s a Kohler!
Tricia says
I just wanted to comment on quartz… We too have quartz counter tops and LOVE them! We moved into our new house a year ago and somehow during the move had blue food colouring (Canadian spelling – ha ha) leak all over our island and we didn’t notice until the next day! Rubbed some blue Dawn on it and let it sit for a few minutes… clean as can be! Blue Dawn (has to be the blue one) takes stains out of anything, even expensive white/cream quartz counter tops!! My Mom and all of my aunts have sworn by it for years!
Loved this post, Shay! Your kitchen is so warm and welcoming! Wish I didn’t live so far or I’d take you up on that bundt cake… LOL! Wink…
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwwwww!! Come on!! I’d love to have you!!!!!
Tanya says
I have been wanting to paint my cabinets! I would love your painters information. I live in McKinney too. I sent you an email earlier this morning. ☺️
Evelyn says
Love the kitchen! Do you have a microwave? I didn’t see one. Also how do you recycle, is that why you have 2 trash cans?
Mix and Match Mama says
We do! If you’re looking at the island, it’s on the lefthand side on the lower cabinet. We have a blue recycle trashcan right outside the door in the garage, so that’s where we take those items as collected.
Jessica says
It’s stunning!! Thought it was beautiful before but WOW gorgeous. My favorite is the blue island and the gold lanterns!
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwwww! Thank you!!!
Rachel says
Love it! I have a super random question about the paint, do you know what finish was used! I need to have mine repainted but can’t decide the finish!
Mix and Match Mama says
egg shell!
Emily says
I can’t believe I’m the first person to ask this…but what color paint is that on the island? Always love a good blue.
Emily says
I am so intrigued too about the floorplan of your house. Would you ever share a layout for us to see? I dream of building my own someday or gutting our current house.
Mix and Match Mama says
Hmmmm…I don’t know? Maybe? It really works for us!
Diana says
I agree with the comment about seeing the layout of your house, I would love to see that or one that is similar! Your house is like a french chateau, it’s beautiful! and your kitchen is a dream! 🙂 I didn’t even notice your fridge before since it blends in with the cabinets, and the double dishwasher is such a great idea!
shannon rossiter says
Hi!
Wondering what you use or do to keep your painted cabinets so pretty. We have painted (Sherwin Williams white) cabinets in our kitchen. After just a couple of years, the paint is chipping/flaking off
Mix and Match Mama says
Well, I anticipate that happening too. I’m hoping I can just touch it up with leftover paint. I like to use Mr. Clean Magic Erasers to clean them off as needed.
Connie says
Shay I’m jealous. I love, love, love your home!!! That stone is beautiful!! I know it’s been there, but I just love that look! I love it all! You have style! Also, those organic Apple-cinnamon rice rollers are amazing!! Thanks for the rec!
Mix and Match Mama says
We love them too!!! Thank YOU for the sweet comment!
Shelly says
Everything looks beautiful! Will you please share the name of your island paint color? SO pretty 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
I sent Andrew off to look for the can yesterday. I’m not sure we still have one left (as I spilled what I think was our remaining one on the driveway, sigh). It’s a mix! If I find it, I will for sure let everyone know!
Cece says
Random question– mostly because I’m nosy! Have you added on a social media person to the Mix and Match team? I’ve noticed the use of hashtags and more editing on your pics. I’ve also noticed that you are responding to many more comments on the blog. Just wondering if you’ve expanded your Mix and Match team. Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
Ha! No! I’ve just been quarantined and had more time on my hands to finally tackle some of my “to do” list. I have been meaning to work on my IG more for years but never found the time…I have it now, so I’m trying to be better at posting. My team all works for MMT.
Rachel says
Do you know what paint finish he used? Semi gloss or satin or something else? I’m going to redo my cabinets and don’t know what to pick!
Charmin Brooks says
I think a few comments above Shay mentioned egg shell as the finish. 😉
Shannon Leyerle says
Wow – such a difference! They’re both great, but I love the lighter look. Can I ask what the paint color is on your blue island? I’m very excited about your office too! With all four of your kids headed to school in the fall, it’s probably a great time to have a dedicated space!
Mix and Match Mama says
I wish I had the can! I need to figure it out to share!!
Karen says
Love the changes!!! Your step up counter height on the bar seems perfect. I’ve had a super high one and now our current one is flat and I’m not thrilled…..Do you know how many inches yours is? Thanks
Mix and Match Mama says
From ground to floor or the difference between the bar and counters? I’ll measure!
Karen says
Thanks ~ I was able to see it clearly on your IGTV tour….
Carol says
Have you ever heard of ruggables? They’re nice because you can take the top off and wash them. Pretty helpful for kid friendly homes ?
Mix and Match Mama says
I haven’t! Looking it up!!
Kacy M says
Love it!!
Nicole says
Love, Love, Love.
How about a fridge tour next!?
Kristen says
I tried to read all the comments for the new island blue paint color but didn’t see it. Do you know the name?
Thanks kristen
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t! It’s a weird mix of colors…I used to have a can leftover, but I accidentally spilled it all over our driveway. And then Andrew drove through it. If you look closely at my driveway pics, you can see it. Sigh. Sigh. Sigh.
Deena says
Your kitchen was lovely before but I love the changes you made to made it brighter! I’d love white cabinets but we moved and I do like our dark cabinets. Maybe someday.
I would have said before that backless stools aren’t as comfortable but I’d have been wrong. We got padded counter height stools that are so comfy and I can sit in them a long time. Thanks for sharing!
Maddy says
Love it! These pics are gorgeous. What’s your favorite Julipreset? I just bought a couple!
Mix and Match Mama says
I like the ones called soft, light and bright!
polly pover says
Latex or oil? What finish? If it was oil paint, how did you deal with the fumes?
Mix and Match Mama says
I am pretty sure it’s latex!
Lauren says
I’m in love! Such a sucker for the French country look and you have so achieved that perfectly here in my opinion!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you!!!
Sarah G says
So beautiful! I love the bright white with the pop of color. It came together so perfectly.
Kim C says
Your kitchen has always been one of my favorite rooms to see on your blog and social media (with your outdoor space following closely). Love all the changes that you’ve made! I would also love to see your pantries, fridge, & freezer organization or even just the set up. With also 6 people in the house, it doesn’t matter how often I organize things, 30 minutes later the kid tornado has usually gone through and undone everything.
Mary says
Hi Shay,
I love the gold tone hardware in your kitchen and I noticed you switched your pantry doorknob to gold tone too. I’d love to have gold tones in my kitchen but the rest of my house/doors etc has a brushed nickel hardware. What color are your other doorknobs in the rest of your house? Gold? Does it matter if everything doesn’t match? What do you think?
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t think it has to match. I think make each room how you like and enjoy. Over the last two years, we’ve replaced many light fixtures, sconces, door knobs, hardware with new things but it’s not all cohesive!
shawnna Griffin says
hey girl- love the kitchen! so cool!
