Hello, hello!
Today’s post is all about our house 🙂 !
At the beginning of the year, I started jotting down some of the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) I get about different topics, and today, I’m going to address some of the ones pertaining to our house. Side note, the flag is not flying today, I just thought this picture was particularly festive for a house post 😉 .
This post is really just going to be a random mix of this and that…starting with the number one question I’ve received since January 1st about our house…
WHAT COLOR ARE YOUR INTERIOR WALLS?
Easy question and easy answer…
Almost all of the walls in our house are painted Sherwin Williams’ Kilim Beige.
Speaking of walls…
WHAT COLOR DID YOU PAINT THE LIBRARY?
Early this year, after 15 years of always having a “red room” in my house, we painted our library…
…Sherwin Williams’ Latte (which is in the same color family as Kilim Beige, just a tad darker).
TELL ME ABOUT YOUR NEW COUNTER TOPS?
About a year ago, we replaced some of our counters in the kitchen. I still love the Alaska White granite that I had (and have it in other places throughout the house)…
…still love it! But, I decided to change things up and lighten things up, so we replaced it with…
…this quartz in Calcutta. I like both granite and quartz because they’re tough and you don’t have to be careful with either one. I can sit hot things down, spills wipe away easily…they’re both really durable. I had them do a straight edge this time on the counters as well.
Speaking of those two pics, I received this question several times…
WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR NEW LIGHT FIXTURES IN THE KITCHEN?
I love my new light fixtures! We actually went through the house this year and replaced all of our sconces and several light fixtures including the two over the island. I bought them HERE and love them!
WHAT ARE THOSE TRAYS YOUR KIDS ALWAYS USE?
When I looked on Amazon, it said I bought these trays back in 2016! Whoa! To say we’ve gotten our money out of them would be the biggest understatement known to man. We use them all day, every day. I love the lip on them (no spills), I love that they can be used for both food and crafts, I love that they’re durable…I love them! Everyone has a color, and that keeps things simple. Ours aren’t currently in stock, but these are similar.
WHERE ARE YOUR NEW BAR STOOLS FROM?
We replaced our bar stools when we replaced the counters in order to lighten things up a bit. My kids like them because they’re big and comfy, and I like them because they swivel. You can find them HERE.
WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR RUG IN THE LIVING ROOM?
I got a lot of questions about rugs. Almost every single rug in my house is from Pottery Barn. Seriously, from the kids’ rooms to upstairs, our room, the great room, the dining room…PB. Now, these rugs…
…from my closet are from Magnolia, but I could not for the life of me find a link for you. I love them too!
WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR NEW PATIO FURNITURE?
We updated our patio furniture early fall…
…and everything from the lounge chairs to the table and chairs, sofa, ottoman, it’s all Restoration Hardware! We mixed and matched between the teak and wicker.
I LOVE YOUR OUTDOOR RED CHAIRS! WHERE DID YOU GET THOSE?
These are legit some of my favorite things too! These are from Home Depot, and they’re super comfy! They’re really easy to hose off, wipe down, stack, carry…they’re not heavy, they wear really well year after year and typically come in a variety of colors, and they’re only $20 each! I always love the red, but they come in a variety of colors.
WHERE DO YOU BUY ALL OF YOUR INDOOR AND OUTDOOR PILLOWS?
I love me a pillow…
…they’re all from Pottery Barn too! I really do feel like their outdoor pillows last forever and as for their indoor ones, since you typically have to buy the insert separate, just replace the pillow covers seasonally and fold the ones you’re not using (instead of storing the entire pillow). Here are the pillows on the sofa from left to right: PRINT//BLUSH//VELVET//TUFTED
IS THAT A BATTING CAGE?
Ha! I’m typing this post right now on the patio table and just snapped this pic…
…see it back there?
It’s a batting cage!
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU ALWAYS PLAYING?
Every time I post a video, I get this question. The answer is always French Cooking Music Radio on Pandora 🙂 .
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR BIG POOL FLOATS?
Amazon!! 🙂 They have a huge variety!
WHERE DO YOU BUY ALL OF YOUR LITTLE LAMPS?
This right here, was the second more FAQ so far this year when it comes to my house…
…so many of you want to know where all of my lamps come from, and I so wish I could point you to one particular place. I legit have lamps from anywhere and everywhere. Some are from stores and boutiques, some are from Walmart or Target, some are from flea markets, some online…they’re each from some place different. Boo. I hate that I can’t be more specific, but what I can say is that they really are everywhere (Hobby Lobby, Home Goods, all of those places too!) so just be on the lookout! I bet you’ll end up seeing them now that your’e looking.
Whew! Lots of house questions!! If you have any other ones, please let me know! I’ll be answering them today here and on Stories as well!! xo
Erika Slaughter says
Q and A posts are always some of my favorites! That was fun!
Kimberly says
I loved reading through your post! We have Kilim Beige in our home, too and LOVE it! I am curious where you found your sofa table that was on the rug you showed. I am looking for one that exact size.
Mix and Match Mama says
That is Restoration Hardware!
Diana Austin says
Your grass looks fantastic! My question is: Do you clean your house yourself or do you get outside help?
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you! Grass is one of Andrew’s “chores” 😉 . When I opened my travel agency, I got someone to come help me clean. She’s helped so much!!
Cher Rezac says
what do you do with all your old stuff when you replace it? Furniture, light fixtures etc
Mix and Match Mama says
We sell them to people here locally!
Laura says
Your house is gorgeous and I love your decorating style!!! I was wondering what you do with the older items that you replace?
Mix and Match Mama says
We sell them to people we know/put them on our city’s FB page for things like this.
Becky Martinez says
How many lamps? 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
I just counted: 3,896,365 🙂 .
Sarah says
This was my question, too!!! Not necessarily “how many” overall, but more how do you decide how many lamps per room? I never want to over-do it, but I LOVE lamps and think they make a space so cozy!!! Yours really do look so, so good!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I probably always over do it! Hahaha! We never, ever, ever turn on overhead lighting, so we need lots of lamps for good lighting!
Ellen V. says
Thanks Shay, I enjoyed reading this post!
Lori says
Your house is always so cozy, every season! I am curious to what is above the upstairs windows on the outside of your home? I thought it might be a window…nevertheless, it’s gorgeous! Thank you for sharing & giving us inspiration!
Mix and Match Mama says
In the first pic of the exterior of the house? Right above the flag? It’s a window that just looks into the foyer (it’s a two story foyer). That one?
Karen says
I noticed that little window as well. What a unique feature!
Lori says
Yes! I was just curious! The outside is as beautiful as the inside! Thank you for sharing!
Ahna @ Hammers N Hugs says
The new lights over your kitchen island are perfection. Love them. I would love to read a review of your pool. What you would do differently, the same – the size, features, materials, pavers etc. I am designing a pool into our outdoor living when we build, and it is so helpful hearing from other pool owners!
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s a great post idea!
Jennifer C says
Yes! We are currently designing a pool and outdoor living space so would be super interested in a “pool post”!
Dana says
Agreed!!
Angela says
Yes, a pool post would be wonderful!!! We’re looking into one
Gianna says
Shay – I love your house!! It’s so cozy and inviting :). I believe you when you say you can’t find a link to those Magnolia rugs in your closet. I’ve been searching for SO LONG!!??
Mix and Match Mama says
I felt like I spent an hour looking! Hahaha! I bought it several years ago, so that’s probably why. I do love those rugs!!!
Amy Wolff says
Love your house!!! ANd your mom’s! ❤️
The two chairs on your family room look like they are PotteryBarn (I think they swivel)
Do you remember the color of the fabric choice?
Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
All four chairs in there are actually RH too! The two velvet ones don’t swivel but they both recline and the two white chairs downstairs don’t do anything, but we have two more (in leather) upstairs that recline.
Halee Bownds says
Can we see more of the kids’ rooms! I love how you have to step up into Madeley and Ashby’s closet. Are all of their rooms/closets like that?
Mix and Match Mama says
No, just the little two girls’! Yes!! I can do that!
Kathy says
Some people sure do have the ‘eagle eye’, as I never even noticed the batting cage back in the woods behind your pool before! 🙂 Very impressive! Your house is beautiful, and I especially love the outdoor area. I imagine I would spend most of my time on your back patio!
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s where I live most days too 🙂 !
Karen says
I’ve noticed the cheetah/leopard print carpet on your steps in previous photos. Do you know the brand of carpet and the color name? Would love for my bedroom. Thank you Shay!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh goodness, I don’t! I’m sorry! We picked that out such a long time ago that I don’t remember the details.
Marilyn Bridges says
The new things are all beautiful! Just curious, with light fixtures or other small furniture items you replace, do you have a good place where you re-sell these or do you donate? Thanks
Mix and Match Mama says
Our city has a FB page for selling items like that, and we did that both times!
Jeanine says
I was wondering where you got the leather sofa in your family room, and is it comfortable?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes, yes, YES!! It’s another Restoration Hardware find!!
Renee says
What about the swing set in your yard? Do you think the swing set and mulch was a good investment? Do your older kids still like it?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yesssssss! All of my kids still use it. I’m so happy we put that back there!!
Elspeth says
I love all your home posts, your home is so cozy but elegant. Simply beautiful!
http://www.elspethsdaybyday.com
Beth Knecht says
It’s always comfy cozy to get peeks inside people’s homes! I’m curious as to how you keep up with having a clean back porch? Do you sweep and wipe things down with a rag daily? If so, (this sounds dumb) where do you keep that dirty rag? I hate having dirty rags laying around but don’t want to wash it in with our other clothes!
Mix and Match Mama says
Andrew Shull sweeps it and wipes down the table, etc every day.
April says
Thanks for sharing. I love your home and that it always looks cozy. I know you’ve shared some of your cozy tips before and I’ve definitely tried to implement some – more lamps, more pillows. And that outdoor space – wow! Thanks again for giving us more of a glimpse into your home. Happy Easter!
Sayra Harris says
Where do you store all of your pool floats during the summer when you are using them daily?
Mix and Match Mama says
Typically, most of them “die” before the end of the year (as my kids “love” them hard), so we don’t usually have many that survive. The ones that do, we just take out the air and kind of pack up until next year.
Miranda Foster says
Love your style!
We use the color trays daily as well! Love them!
Melissa says
Shay could you do a whole outdoor tour of your yard?? I know we get little glimpses but it would be great to see the layout so I could get an idea since I am currently trying to figure out what to do in my yard! I would love to know more about your gardens, what you plant, flowers and shrubs and such!
Mix and Match Mama says
Sure!!
Stephanie says
How deep is your pool? We are building one right now and have 4 kids of similar ages to yours, and not sure what to do. Trying to make it fun for the littles and bigs!
Mix and Match Mama says
I think it’s 5 feet!
Jenn says
I love little lamps but oh my gosh, I need advice on cord management! When you’ve got a lamp like that on your counter, are you just placing them strategically? Do you have floor outlets for living spaces? For my house, it’s hard to figure anything out!
Mix and Match Mama says
We do have strategic floor outlets, but on counters, I just make it work!
Prudence says
Your house is so beautiful and cozy! Any recommendations for a good coffee maker? I have a Keurig that needs to be replaced. It gets a lot of use.
Mix and Match Mama says
Well, I love Keurigs too! We’ve tried Nespresso, but I really like the Keurig more. Right now, we have a Jura.
Elyse says
Love your house, Shay! We just bought our first house at the end of December! I hope my house is as cozy as yours one day! 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Cozy is my favorite word 🙂
Katie says
Can you do a video tour of your house? I just love your style!
Sarabeth says
Where is your bedding for your master bedroom from?
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s all right here: https://mixandmatchmama.com/2020/03/bed-making-routine/
Lauren says
Your closet is so gorgeous! Details on how you put it together and/or organize it would be fun to know!
Erin says
Can you pleaseeee do a closet tour?! Your closet looks absolutely amazing!
Crystal says
Did y’all custom draw your floor plan? The house is beautiful!!
Mix and Match Mama says
We did!
Kim says
Love you house. What paint color is your kitchen island? Love it
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s a mix! We just repainted it when we replaced the cabinets and removed the black “antiquing” from around the blue gray. It’s the combination of several blues and a little gray from Sherwin Williams.
Lauren Karg says
I love your house! It’s always so cozy and I now order those Texas candles of yours all the way to Kentucky! I would love if you would do a full house tour. Similar to a layout. We have land we are waiting to build on as well and I love seeing functional floorplans that work well for larger families with kiddos!
Hope you and your family are staying safe during this time. Praying for you all!! Have a blessed day!
Terry Glenn says
I love the bedspread on your bed. The one at the foot of the bed. Do you mind telling where you purchased it? It’s one of the prettiest I’ve seen, and I have the same color scheme. Thank you so much, Shay!
Terry
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s an oldie but goodie! We bought it about 7-ish years ago from a store that’s no longer around. Boo.
Kasey says
Do you have a playroom for the kiddos and if so is it upstairs or downstairs? Coming from a Mama bathing in the trenches of three under the age of five drinking all of the coffee and all of the wine! ?
Mix and Match Mama says
We have one upstairs! Annnnnnd…I’m on my third cup of coffee today!! 😉
Paras says
Hey love the post. I was in market today and saw gluten free meatballs and I think I remember you saying you haven’t found any. The brand is Cooked Perfect Brand. The store we use is Harris Teeter. Hope this helps.
Bethany S says
Thanks for sharing this! Your home always inspires me to create a cozy living space that feels welcoming! I have always debated getting a leather vs fabric sofa when we replace ours. We currently just have a dog, but would love to have kids, so I always wonder which one will hold up better. I figure if you have 4 kids and 3 dogs, leather must hold up pretty well.
Thanks again for sharing. Happy Easter to your sweet fam!
june says
Beautiful home! Love the ottoman in your closet. Do you remember where you got it?
Mix and Match Mama says
Wayfair!
Charmaine Ng | Architecture & Lifestyle Blog says

Maggie says
This was great! You should do a how I work from home post. With everything going on in the world, I have had to set up shop at home and having never worked from home before it is an adjustment! Since you work from home all the time, a few tips and tricks would be really timely!
Em says
Hi Shay! Thanks for the home tour! Sort of random, but I’m wondering what your rules are with the pool and keeping the kids safe. No one allowed in or near unless mom/dad outside, everyone out if you have to run inside quick, playing in the pool rules, staying safe around edge of pool, etc. I’m sure as your kids get older, the rules are maybe easier for them to follow? Just looking for tips for my littles 🙂 thank you!
Mix and Match Mama says
The rules have changed as they’ve gotten older but no one is ever allowed to go outside without mom and dad’s permission and all doors are kept locked at all times…are a few basic ones that we’ve always had. All of the doors also beep when opened and it says which door “outside garage door open” things like that too. We have other rules/locks/dos and don’t but those are some of the very basics!
Julia says
Hi Shay! Such a gorgeous home! Can you tell us more about where you get all the framed wall art in your home? Any favorite Dallas-area places? Do you go into art galleries when you travel? I have a hard time even finding art while on vacation!
Mix and Match Mama says
We typically get pieces from our travels and then have them framed at home. We also like to visit consignment shops in Dallas for pieces as well!
Amanda @ That Inspired Chick says
I love when you post about your house!! I would live on that back patio. Swoon.
That Inspired Chick
Carla says
Could you also do a post with more detail about the batting cage? We have a baseball loving kid in our home and want to see if that’s something that could be done in our backyard.
Holley says
I’ve always loved your home! Thank you for sharing!! 🙂
-Holley @ beesimplyorganized.com
Kaylee says
Where do you get your seasonal plates you set out on the counter? I know I’ve seen your
Fall and Christmas ones before. Now sure what other holiday ones you have? Are the plastic or ceramic?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! The sweetest lady named Lori does them! You can find her on Facebook at @ohhowcute by Lori Clark!
Michelle says
Hey Shay! Your home is beautiful and so inviting! Can you tell me where the fire place screen in the family room is from? I love it. 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s from Stacy’s Furniture!
Lori says
What are all your candles again? I know you’ve raved about them in older posts. You always have the cutest ones! Any favorites?
Mix and Match Mama says
My favorites are Circle E Candles from Fredericksburg TX! My favorite scents are Country Morning (that’s like a pumpkin spice) and Apple Strudel. Their most popular is Bird of Paradise and right this minute, I’m burying Citrus Orchard!
Chrys says
Can we please, please get a closet tour? Your walk-in closet looks absolutely dreamy ?
Angela says
Your home is beautiful! Do you have a link to the topiaries and urns by your front door? Are the plants real?
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t! I’m sorry!!
Jamie says
Where do you keep your exercise equipment?! I forget that basements aren’t normal in all states and that’s where our home gym is located!
Mix and Match Mama says
Right this minute, they’re all in the garages.
Justina says
I love how you decorate your house for each holiday, can you share how to organize and store your decorations
Mix and Match Mama says
I have so many pictures of my house decorated for the holidays! That’s one of my favorite things to do!! On the side bar, you can search “deck the halls” or “fall decorations” and multiple posts will pop up!
CRyan says
So pretty Shay! Thank you for sharing!
KC says
How many acres do you have?
Mix and Match Mama says
A little over one!
Sandra says
Do you happen to know the color of your Stucco? I am wanting to repaint ours and that is the exact color I want.
Mix and Match Mama says
We have cast stone!
Lisa says
Hi Shay! As always, thank you for taking the time to give us a peek into your life and answer so many questions! Can you post your master bedroom closet? It looks AMAZING and I would love to see the whole thing. Have a great day!
Lisa
Dana says
Hi! Your home is very warm and inviting. You have great taste Shay! Here are some questions:
– where is your Peleton kept? where do you do yoga? weights? do you have a separate exercise room?
– do your dogs shed and do the dark floors show the hair? do you ever wish they were lighter?
– does Kensington have a volleyball net in the yard for her sports too? or a dance barre for the girls?
– how many bathrooms do you have? do you feel it’s too many, not enough or just right?
– what type of fence did you choose? I like the look of wood but hear the vinyl is more durable
– do you have a garden? favorite flowers/things to grow?
– is the pool maintenance worth having a pool? any issues with snakes, mice etc.
– why did you choose a two level vs one level home when building?
– where or what do you play your music from? your phone? stereo? computer?
These could be longer posts…
– what would each person and dog say is their favorite thing about their home and their fav room?
– where do you get your design inspiration from? magazines? books? movies? travel (places around the country/world you’ve been or seen)?
– are there any future projects you have in mind or something you want for your house or done to it that you haven’t yet? anything your kids or husband would like but don’t have yet?
I know that’s a lot- I really tried to come up with some for you! Hope it helps and can’t wait to hear your responses. Thanks again Shay for sharing your beautiful space with us!
Mix and Match Mama says
Okay, I love all of these questions! I actually had so many from my Stories yesterday that I think I’ll do a second post to answer more. I’m going to save this list for that time so that I can give adequate attention to each one!
Catherine says
I have noticed you pinning a lot of ‘light and bright’ decor pictures on Pinterest. Are you planning on more changes to reflect that style – would you ever change your wall colours for instance? Thank you for the home tour! It looks like your home ‘lives well’.
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t think so, I just like to pin a variety and you know how Pinterest works, you pin one chocolate cake and the next day, it has 100 chocolate cakes in your feed. It’s probably because I grew up in the home of an interior designer, but my house will never be “finished”…it will always be slightly changing, adapting, being tweaked. My mom always told us to grow and change constantly. That being said, I really do love the more warm tones and any time I move in another direction for a hot minute, I jump right back.
Jennifer says
Your backyard is amazing but every time I see your pictures all I can think is—mosquitos! We live in Denton (very close to you) on a wooded lot and can hardly use our pool because of the pests! Do you have a trick?
Mix and Match Mama says
Some years are better than others FOR SURE! We use a service called Mosquito Joe’s who comes out and sprays about twice month during mosquito season.
Genevieve says
Do you use a dish drainer on your kitchen counter? If not, how do you handle hand wash items and pots and pans?
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t have to hand wash very often at all (I purposely only use things that can do in the dishwasher), but if I do ever hand wash, I just dry it immediately and put it away.
Tara Rexroth says
Are your bedroom walls the same Kilim beige? You had a picture recently with Smith and Yankee and I loved the wall color. Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
No, that’s a darker taupe color. I believe it’s called oatmeal…but I don’t remember that one exactly. It’s more like the “latte” in the library.
Tara PEARSON says
Any chance it is called oat cake? I love your decorating style and I’m trying to find a paint color for our house. Thanks for helping!
Mix and Match Mama says
Okay, I just looked around on their site and I think it’s “taupe tone”. I am not 100%, but I’m like 95% sure that’s it!
Kim C. says
Love reading posts about your home! I never tire of looking and reading about it. I know you have a lot of lamps in your house, like things cozy, and rarely if ever use overhead lights, but what about during the day? I’ve really taken to using just our lamps in the living room at night thanks to you but I still love for the house to be really bright during the day. During the day do you draw curtains/shades or do you not mind the brightness then?
Mix and Match Mama says
I keep the same lamps on all day (morning until night). I think the lamps I have plus the natural light gives me enough “day” light and then in the evening, the lamps give me a cozy light. The highest wattage of bulb we use in them is 40.
Charlene Cunningham says
Can you give more details on the kitchen quartz? I have been looking for a light color that is not “busy” or have too many dark veins.. This looks perfect. Is it cambria, ceasarstone, etc???? This is for my master bath.
Mix and Match Mama says
The quartz we picked out is called “Calcutta”. I liked it because it appears more like marble (which I love) but is more durable. We picked out our two slabs and made sure they weren’t too vein-y.
Laura says
Sorry if this was asked. Do you turn off all your lamps every night. I always worry about how safe they are? I just Love how cozy your house looks
Mix and Match Mama says
I turn off most of them. We leave some on 24/7 but most, we flip off at night.
Norma says
Shay, do you remember the name of the rug in your room that you just painted from pottery barn. I have looked on site and not sure which one it is. Thanks
Mix and Match Mama says
I bought that rug six years ago, so that one isn’t online any longer. I really think it’s my favorite too!
Jaime says
Hi I’m not the best at planning out recipes that “Go together” for a meal. Do you think your Lemon Gnocchi with Peas and Parm would be good with your Scallop Kabobs? Thank you so much! I wasn’t sure about this one.
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! I love scallops with lemon and peas!
Katie says
Love this post! Do you know the type or color of your wood floors?
Mix and Match Mama says
I think (but I may be wrong) that the stain on the wood is something like espresso???
Kris says
We’re thinking about building an outdoor grill area- what items other than the grill do you have built in?
Mix and Match Mama says
A fridge and a cooler. We actually use the cooler waaaaaaay more than the fridge!
Andrea Lauper says
Hi Shay,
I wanted to know what color of “white” your kitchen cabinets are painted? I never knew picking a white could be so hard.
Thank you!
Mix and Match Mama says
They’re painted a cream color and then “antiqued” with a brown stain on top.
Misty says
I love your wood floors! Do you remember what brand and stain color they are?
Mix and Match Mama says
They’re real wood and the stain (I’m pretty sure) is called espresso!
Julie says
Hi Shay-
Where did you get the beautiful white chairs in your living room (with the fireplace?). I am sadly in need of a new chair as my children broke the legs off the one I had? and now only four out of five of us can sit down to watch a movie together? LOL. Thanks so much!
Mix and Match Mama says
They’re from Restoration Hardware!
Shana says
we are building our first house and I’m already having issues picking out a brick color? I’ve realized the mortar color can really change the brick. Can you please tell me the color of your exterior brick?
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s a basic brown! I wanted our whole house to have smeared mortar, so the brick color didn’t matter (similar to painting the brick). For this technique, any old regular brick would work because you see the smear not the brick.
Shana says
Thank you!! ☺️
