The Mix and Match Mama Office


Well, it’s here!  Today’s the big reveal of the new Mix and Match Mama (and Mix and Match Travel Agency) office.

I mean…I feel a bit nervous and a bit stupid at the same time.

It’s literally just a room in my house.

It’s not that big of a deal at all.

The thing is though…my dream of having this room was over 3 years in the making AND IT LITERALLY RUINED MY HOUSE.

Like literally.

Everything from the actual structure itself down to the patio to all of the grass and yard (thanks to the construction workers/equipment/tools/dumpster/etc) was damaged during the construction of this little space.  So yeah, I feel a bit excited and bit like “um, yeah, all of that for this one little room…I know…ridiculous”.

BUT I LOVE IT.

I’m not ready to say “it was worth it” which is the number one question every team member, family member and/or friend has asked since coming over to see it.  Was it worth it?  I’m not sure yet (insert that wide-eyed emoji).  I’m so happy to have it though, and I love every detail!  It’s everything I wanted it to be and makes me really proud.  I have worked really hard to build up my little business and now, it officially has a space.

So, first everyone needs to settle in.  I have about 400 pictures on today’s post for you to review.  I will try and source as much as I can at the bottom of the post, but there’s a good chance, I’ll probably miss a thing or two.

Before we see it, we need to start at the beginning…

I took this pic standing in my backyard last May.  Our vision was to add the office above our master bedroom but then also connect it with the other side of the house (adding above the patio too).  I wanted you to be able to access the office from both inside the house (in two places) and outside the house as well (for anyone stopping by to visit me)…

The early days of construction.  That right side there was going to be the new addition of my staircase along with my new exterior door and walkway.

Brick off, concrete poured, it was time to rock ‘n roll!

So the door opens to this landing here which has a pocket door that I can close to keep it separated from my bedroom or I can keep it open too.

You can walk right up these stairs and head to my office.

I love this picture of my grandparents.

Same grandpa on my 16th birthday.  I’ve had this picture on every single desk I’ve had from that day until now.  When we took that picture, he had just been diagnosed with cancer.  That picture (and frame) went to college with me, went to Detroit, went to State Farm and every desk in between.  He passed away about 22 months later.

 

 

That’s actually a TV with “wallpaper” I can change out on the screen.  This one here makes me happy right now 🙂 .

        My team works from home! I actually have three girls who work for me that don’t even live in Texas! My office manager, Caroline, comes over the most often and then Erika and Clare do as well from time to time.

      Not nosey! That connects to the rest of the new construction that connects to the upstairs we’ve always had. More room tours to come, but it’s a great space out that door too!

      They all work from home. Caroline comes up here the most and sits across from me at my desk…Erika is actually coming today, but for the most part, it is me and maybe C.

      They do come over from time to time, and we work at my desk. There are drawers on the front side of the desk (it’s called a ‘partners’ desk) that give them a bit of space too.

    Shay, I was wondering what kind of flooring did you use? We just had to re-pipe our entire house after the winter storm (we’re down here outside of Houston), and I have to pick out new floors after we had water damage from busted pipes.

      Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry!! These are real wood floors that we cut into the herringbone pattern and then stained.

      I do not have shades on these windows! The way the sun sets really makes this an ideal space not to need shades.

    Gorgeous! A fire place is a must! The balcony tiles are stunning! My question seeing your charger plugs…..why did you not do the outlets with built in USB ports? We have slowly replaced almost all of our “pivotal charging” outlets with ones that have them. Game changer. No more huge bricks for charging!

      Also, people ask me if our house flooding was worth it to get the entire thing remodeled. Although I love it and am so happy we got to change everything, I am just not there yet either on saying it was worth it. May after more time passes.

    Two questions: Just curious since you have a home business did you have to do anything special for approval with the homeowners association? and Have you had to do anything to shore up the creek running behind your house?       Yes! Our HOA has looooots of rules, so we checked every one of them…and yes, Andrew does something out there. I’m not quite sure what he does…but he’s always a busy bee around that creek.

    For those asking about the art/pictures …. I have found quite a bit of similar items (pictures, coffee mugs, etc. featuring “that girl”) at TJ Maxx and HomeGoods for my oldest daughter, who also is obsessed. Maybe not the same quality, but a good source for starters.

          Today, I did? I am almost positive that we used Antique White for the trim in my office. It’s been the year of white paint…but I really think that’s it!

      Well, I never one time complained about them. I complained about me and my ambition desiring to create an office that, due to poor construction at one point, flooded my entire house (and the result of that was total destruction of my house that required an army to put it back together.) I think I’ve handled the whole flood situation with grace…all things considered.

    Stunningly beautiful or AMAZEBALLS!!!! In all seriousness sometime we walk thru pain or extreme difficulty and we need to sit with those emotions for awhile to see if in time there is purpose to that moment and come to a conclusion. I believe time will reveal your answer to the question if it was worth it. I also bet the glorious view of the seasons out your beautiful windows is going to bring you that answer in a very still quiet moment.

    GORGEOUS!!! Curious…. did you have the original builder of your home do the addition or did you go with someone else? It looks flawless, and like it was always supposed to be that way 🙂 We have a similar project, and finding the right contractor is scary! Something always goes wrong.

      Our original builder doesn’t do remodels, so we had another builder come in and do this. That being said, our original builder’s architect drew up the plans, and they were instrumental in the design and cohesiveness. Side note, our original builder is also busy right now being mayor of our town 🙂 .

I have a space my office and I am typing from it now It is a very calm place for me to collect my thoughts and pray, create and dream I felt looking at the pictures that God wanted to show you his faithfulness He wants you to stay determined for the season ahead of you with raising your children, with Ashbys challenges (which I am praying for) and all the good He has instore.     Everything in your new office is lovely! Since we’re older than your parents, we wonder why this room wasn’t planned as part of your first floor to accommodate clients unable to navigate stairs or maybe none of your clients have such an handicap? I also was concerned to see the “cut out” in your floor space to the first step at the top of your stairway. An architect designed our house with that same “flaw” (third floor), & for safety’s sake, we’ve needed to place a railing there so no one accidentally tumbles onto that top step. Am SO glad, along with you, your office is completed!

    Absolutely beautiful Shay! Love that coffered ceiling, herringbone hardwoods, Lucite handrail…..I could go on and on! Question about your textured walls. Is that a popular feature in the southwestern states? I’ve seen it in houses in Utah, New Mexico, etc and was wondering. I’m in the eastern part of the US and you never see that here.

      I have the MacBook Air and love it! Andrew has the Pro (I think…the bigger one…it’s the Pro, right?), and he loves it. For me though, his is too big to put in my purse.

    I’ve been working from home for the past year with the pandemic and this space give me so many goals for what a home office could be (as opposed to a space shared with the guest room)

    I’m also envious at the lack of cords! I have so many cords – for my laptop, headset, docking station, extra monitors, keyboard, mouse. It’s cordapoolaza! Inspired to see if there is a way to tame them a little bit.

    I know this has been a journey but the end result is amazing and hopefully worth the process.

    Looks fantastic! Really love the coffered ceiling, herringbone patterned floor and the natural light! The only detail(s) I would add is a world map or a cute globe of some sort! I love a good map 🙂 I gifted my nieces and nephew a world map so they can pin all the places they have travelled and they love doing it!
