Happy Tuesday, friends!
Today, I’m sharing another edition of SHAY’S WAYS (a very silly little name you ladies helped me come up with when I share my own little practical tips, tricks, ideas and keys for easy everyday living). These are all just my opinions, ways of living and none of them are perfect/right/me telling you what to do. I’m just sharing more “me” and you take what you like from it and leave the rest.
A very sweet blog reader asked me earlier in the year if I would share my keys to everyday happiness/joy. I jotted that note down and have been thinking about it since. I certainly have my bad days, my bad moods, my bad moments. There are some days when I just cannot wait to go to sleep so that I can start afresh the following day. I also certainly haven’t faced the trauma and hardships many of you have throughout the years, so this is certainly in no way me telling anyone that my life is hard or that you can make your life ‘easy’ just by doing X,Y and Z. I’ve just been reflecting a lot lately on ways I purposely chose joy in my boring, regular old everydays and am sharing that with you in case maybe you want to add a thing or two to your routine as well.
Thank the good Lord the older I get, the more I change. I go back and shake my head often at the old me and am so grateful for maturity, wisdom and experience that’s come along with each year. One thing that has always been very “me” has been how I like to be influenced (which is ironic considering many would call me ‘an influencer’), but I know not everyone needs/craves/desires that in their life, but I do. My dad does. Andrew doesn’t. Everyone is different.
I love to read those little French books and pick up tips, I love to read through cookbooks for kitchen inspiration, I love to flip through a magazine and find new ideas, and you all know, Pinterest is without a doubt my FAVORITE form of social media. I can get so inspired just sipping my coffee and looking at all of the inspiration in my Pinterest feed. Movies, music, blogs, being outside, TV shows all greatly influence me which is why I try really hard to focus on specific genres/people as to stay in “my influential lane” (I’m talking to you Nancy Meyers!).
The pandemic taught us all a lot, and one thing it taught me was to seek out podcasts for inspiration. You guys, I am a SUCKER for a podcast now. I listen while I work, while I drive my car, when I’m doing chores around my house, when I’m walking my dogs. Just like with the movies I consume, the TV shows I watch and the news outlets I listen to (you can read HERE about how I stopped watching ‘the news’), I am super picky about the podcasts I listen to as I want to be inspired each time. I want to go for a walk and return home motivated by someone and not drained/dragged down. I listen to a variety, but my favorite podcasts for inspiration are: The Simple Sophisticate, Everyday Wellness, At Home with Sally, The Enneagram Journey, and The Simplified Podcast.
So, I typed all of that to say that I take pieces from all of the above and apply them to my life to find more joy and contentment in the everyday. Even if my day is totally sucky, I can still stop and appreciate the simple act of drinking my coffee out of my favorite mug. I can still take my dogs out in the backyard and pick fresh basil. If I am present in my life (something I practice daily!), I can do small, simple things to add a bit of joy and contentment throughout my everydays. Here is a sampling of some of mine.
My 22 KEYS FOR FINDING JOY (AND CONTENTMENT) IN THE EVERYDAY:
1: A cozy chair, cup of coffee and a quiet time (for me, it’s reading the Bible and a little bit of a book) every morning
2: Turning my phone on Do Not Disturb…often.
3: Going outside early in the morning whether to walk or just sit on the patio a minute.
4: Having a few fresh flowers on the kitchen counter. Trader Joe’s always has great prices on beautiful flowers.
5: Lighting a scented candle makes me happy every single day. I change my scents with the seasons for added delight.
6: Taking my dogs for a walk always puts an extra pep in everyone’s step.
7: Keeping a good list of books so that I always have something good to read. As soon as I finish one book, I always open another. I keep a list on my phone and then also on Amazon.
8: Limiting (or removing) the news has helped me so much. If it’s “big”, I’ll hear about it on the local sports station and then, should I choose, look into it further.
9: Using “nice” hand soap in the kitchen and bathroom is such a small detail, but one that always makes me happy. I change out the scents with the seasons here as well which also makes me happy.
10: Cozy slippers for my feet always bring me joy. They’re the most worn item in my entire wardrobe.
11: A great Pandora station to turn on (for me, it’s either Steve Tyrell Radio or French Cooking Music Radio) in the morning and enjoy all day long. I like stations that are soothing and peaceful and easily blend into the backdrop of my day (instead of overpowering the space).
12: Listening to a podcast in the car instead of the radio is such a nice way to spend time in traffic or running from errand to errand.
13: Taking a bath while watching Netflix is a treat for me! There are few times when I can sit down without feeling obligated to “do something else” like laundry or other household chores, but if I’m in the bathtub, I can really enjoy a show without the need to multitask.
14: Getting into freshly laundered sheets at night is one of my favorite things in life.
15: Sitting down with a favorite magazine (and maybe a cup of coffee!) if for only five minutes is energizing for me. If I take it out to the patio, it’s an extra extra blessing.
16: Dinner on the patio instead of inside just feels more special at home.
17: A cozy blanket to use at my desk while I work is a great way to feel happiness (and warm!) while working.
18: Watching any Nancy Meyers’ movie inspires me. Great settings, delicious food, wonderful music, strong women…always happy.
19: Planting herbs and weeding/tending to my little garden is a great way to spend a few minutes outside plus, it often inspires me to head into the kitchen and make dinner.
20: Using my favorite Flair markers for all of my work. The bright colors make me so happy!
21: Having a fern on my balcony to care for and water is an easy way to enjoy a little green each day.
22: Making homemade jam is one of my favorite hobbies. It’s simple and mindless and always puts me in a good mood when I make it…or when I eat it.
These are just a few things I like to add into my day to give me extra joy and find contentment. I’m positive I have more, and I’m positive you do too!! I would LOVE to read how you add little bits of joy into your days. Please, please, please comment and share! I just think in this crazy dark world, if we can be mindful and present, we can find joy in the small things which can add up to BIG HAPPINESS.

I love this post. Thank you. I enjoy many of the same things you do – morning prayer, reading, working out, gardening. I also love my daily hike with our dogs and talking to my college daughter every day. We all have to focus on our blessings during this season.
Susan says
Hmmm. For me it’s just 1 thing. The same that Paul alludes to in Philippians 4:12! While I have plenty of little, fun, happy blessings in life….He’s the only one/thing who brings me true contentment and joy-with or without all the other.
Sheila says
Love all of these Shay!! Ever since I saw you mention the Steve Tyrell station on Pandora several years ago, it’s become one of my favorites as well!! 😊
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m so happy you love it too!
Elspeth says
I love Shay’s ways! I always try to start my day with some quiet time and I have found myself taking advantage of silence, thinking in the car instead of listening to the radio. There’s so much noise, I crave the quiet!

I love this post! I try to incorporate a little prayer “meditation” into my day too. Just sit and “be” with God and think about the current moment He blessed me with. Listen to the birds sing, feel a gust of wind on my face, the sun on my skin and know God created all of that. 😊
Do you meditate? You might really like it! Prayer can be a form of meditation if traditional meditation feels too “out there” (like it did for me at first)!
And as weird as this sounds, sometimes cleaning brings me joy too. It makes me aware of the beautiful home I have, the children I’ve been blessed with, and how fortunate we are to have all that we have. I guess it’s just a matter of perspective? Instead of “I HAVE to do this”, it’s “I’m so lucky I GET to do this”. I hope that makes sense. 😊
Mix and Match Mama says
I absolutely think cleaning brings me joy. There is such satisfaction and contentment when I’m done. I’m not saying I love it every time, but cleaning the kitchen after dinner (for example) is one of my daily joys.
Kathy says
If I’m at a stoplight and see people walking on the sidewalk, etc, I’ll pray for their day as I’m waiting. I’ll probably never meet them, but God knows what they are going through.
This one will sound strange, but I like to do that when I see a jet flying across the sky when we are driving- I just stop for a second and pray for those on the plane.
Anyway, those are little things that make me feel joyful.
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh Kathy, I love this so much!!!
Kim says
I do that too! The privilege to pray for strangers knowing God knows what they need!
Deborah A Mayfield says
Every time I hear a siren from a police car, fire truck or an ambulance I pray for their safety as they answer the emergency. I also pray they have the skills and talents needed for the call they are answering. I have done this for years. I can be in a group of people, hear the sirens, and step away to pray for them. It is as natural as breathing.
WhittyWife (Lindsay) says
Deborah, I do that a lot too! My Dad used to do that. ❤️
Karen S. says
Thanks for sharing ~ I do this also. We have a Care-Flight path over our home, so I that also do one also. Praying for people at stop lights is something I will now incorporate.
Kara says
Favorite brand of hand soap?? I enjoy an iced tea from Starbucks every Wednesday on my day off! Bonus if the sun is shining! 🥰
Mix and Match Mama says
Michel Design Works is my very favorite 🙂
Deena says
Shay….I love that brand too! Will you please share which scents are your favorite for each season?
Melissa Terry says
Loved reading these…always keeping a good book on hand, taking a daily walk, scented candles, fresh sheets, meal planning, planting a little garden, color-coding my planner…those are things that bring me joy and might not someone else, and I’ve learned to lean into those things. Thank you for sharing yours!

I love love love this. Every day there are little and big things we can love and find joy in. I don’t watch the news either, especially first thing in the a.m. I love to put on perfume every single day just for me. I love doing my skin care at night. I love a text from my kids. I love touching base with a friend during the day. I love sending a friend or family member a card in the mail just for fun. Who doesn’t love getting mail? I love my birdfeeder. I love a good candle.
Hope says
Loved this post. I find joy in reading your blog and especially look forward to book day. I love getting up early to drink coffee and snuggle with my dog on the couch. I sometimes listen to podcasts but music is more uplifting to me and I can sing along. I also love to have a bag of chocolate candies or treats to hand out to coworkers. I love to brighten someone’s day a little.
Kay says
Awww, I love this post! I love to pair things I don’t feel like doing with things I love to bring a little more joy each day. So, I’m not the best about getting outside. The only way I allow myself to listen to your Podcast (which I LOVE) is if I’m walking my dog! So I pair walking with podcasts and it makes the time fly by and makes me enjoy the outside time. Or, if I’m in my home office doing something that tends to be stressful, I put on happy music. Almost always Aretha!!!, but sometimes Motown or something else equally upbeat. And to get through a tough meeting or stressful block of time, I promise myself that as soon as it’s done I can’t change into my PJs lol! Anyone else motivated by putting on PJs??
Sarah Conner says
It’s a tiny moment of joy, but now one I look forward to each morning- my husband casually mentioned a few years ago “there’s nothing like that first sip of coffee” and holy moly, he was right! I never realized just how amazing that first sip of morning coffee is and now it’s a moment I look forward to and savor each morning! I don’t know why or how but it really is so much better! 🤣
Kathy says
My husband and I get up an hour early every day so that we both enjoy coffee in bed and just time to just talk to each other, we are so much more calm! It’s even better as he brings my cup to me in bed. It’s small but it means sooo much to me!
Tracy Krzmarzick says
I have been a coffee drinker for years, and after all this time, that first sip never gets old!
Sandra Roberts says
This post is so great. Just reading it has me happy – and I’m also listening to good ole Steve Tyrell right now. It’s such a crazy world but I am a very blessed lady. Thank you for sharing!
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m so happy you’re listening to Steve too 🙂 .
Natalie says
Hi Shay! What candle scents are you loving for Spring and Summer? And what’s the special hand soap?? Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
Right now, I’m loving any sort of fruity (lemon, mango, coconut) scent and anything sea salt. They’re just fresh and very spring/summery. That soap actually came from Hobby Lobby. I like anything that’s not “normal”, you know?
Jcp says
Thanks for sharing! Someone recommended to me a while ago to create a joy “list”. So I now have one in my phone to refer back to, and after months of not looking at it, I’m still surprised and rejuvenated by what I included! It can make me feel like myself again.
Dana P says
Okay, Shay. Things are getting weird around here. 🤭 I do every single one of these except making jam! I wonder if it’s because I’ve read your blog all these years or I would have been doing them already? So funny.
One thing I love to do is send a quick text to a friend when I’m thinking about them. Whether to tell them I’m praying for them, send an old picture I ran across…keeping in touch just takes a minute and is a little happy for both people! I also love to stop and pet our animals, brush them, etc. Pets are a huge part of our life and they bring us so much happiness! I know a lot of people don’t love cats especially, but ours are just the sweetest and love for us to stop and pet their little head. 🥰
Mix and Match Mama says
Dana, it’s time for you to embrace jam making! Ha! I promise you…you will be HOOKED!!
Kit says
Just have to say I LOVE THIS POST. One of the biggest reasons your blog is the only one I consistently read is because you just radiate the joy of life!!! Thank you so much for being you and sharing your light with us!! Truly such an inspiration and a joy for me to read and learn from your blog every day (and reading for over 10 years!). XO
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank YOU! Your comment has really blessed me. I’m so very grateful for this community. xx
Dana P says
Oops…I do keep up with the news a little bit. But I read Axios Dallas, a newsletter that is short and even a little funny. That way I learn about local events as well as the big stories.
Pamela says
I LOVED this post!!! I also find so much joy in my quiet time with Jesus, coffee, reading, blankets, pandora and caring for my plants. I also find so much joy in reading your blog posts everyday…you bring happiness to people so thank you! Now I need to learn how to make jam next 🤣
Laci L Murray says
Very good simple ways to make your day better! I am not a morning person and I wish I were. It would make my day so much smoother, I need to work on that.
Dana says
Love this 🙂 For me one of the things that really make me happy is fresh flowers in little tiny vases throughout my home. Makes me smile every time i see them! Its the little things right 🙂 Thanks for sharing !
Lisa D says
These are such wonderful “ways” to be mindful and joyful. Happiness truly is a choice we make, whether it’s a beautiful day or a hard day. I have cultivated the habit of waking early to sit by the fireplace with my gratitude journal and devotional. When I start my day without Jesus it tends to go downhill, and when I start my day with a grateful heart I’ve opened myself up for blessings. 😊
Jennifer says
At the end of each day, I write in a gratitude journal. I always find at least one thing about the day to be grateful for.
Amanda Wilson says
I love all these. I only follow one blog and it’s this one, I would say this is my five minutes of joy before I start my day. I always read this blog to help me wake up and then I start into my quiet time and prayers. While I was working out one time Autumn Calabrese said “you need to be thankful your body CAN do this” it really stuck with me. When I am driving kids all night I try and just thank Jesus for kids that are able to be active. I would rather spend my nights driving and watching my kids then at a hospital bed. I often think about if I was sick or couldn’t take my kids how awful I would feel. Anyway, I guess what I am saying is for me remembering to be thankful for all the small things we can do helps me find joy.
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh thank you, Amanda. That just means so much. xx
Laura Thomas says
I needed this today. Love these ideas. ❤️
Erin says
This was such an encouragement to me today – thank you. I agree with you about the news and I’m off to find a couple of those podcasts.
Alison says
Thank you for sharing your small moments of joy! May I ask what are your favorite flair pens? I am a copywriter and editor, so I constantly have a desk full of pens and I’m always on the hunt for new ones that are well-loved by others.
Mix and Match Mama says
These right here: https://www.amazon.com/Paper-Mate-Medium-Assorted-Colors/dp/B01HAREUK6/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=flair+pens&qid=1681221136&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUE4TU9XUk9DQUg0SlYmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAzMjYzODMxQ0NGT05TWlM1VEw1JmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA3MTI0NTNUWjIyM1FLNDZVWFgmd2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl

Fresh flowers, windows open, candles burning, sunshine.. I’m smiling just thinking of all of these! I also agree with the no “news” in the traditional sense. When you first posted about not watching the news any more I hopped on that train so fast!! During the pandemic it’s like I was entranced by the news and it was so heavy and sad every single day. I never really realized how much it effected my day until reading your post last year. Cutting that out has made a huge difference! I also love baking + cooking for others. Those definitely bring me joy!
Taylor says
I try to sneak away to my favorite coffee shop once a week and sit at the window seat and read for a while. It brings me so much joy.
Beth Valenta says
I absolutely love this post! When you shared the flair pens…I was like YES! I love making lists with my favorite pens that sparkle with color. Always walking and taking in the outside is so energizing after so many school tasks. This time of year is it chopping up veggies, creating a good dinner, and oh the candles at Bath and Body works. A must candle is Laundry Day!
Kelly says
I love this list! It reminds me that there is joy in little things everyday. One of my favorites that you mentioned was having nice soap in the kitchen and bathroom!
Katherine Perez says
Reading this blog every day makes me happy! I love being a part of your family. And your energy for life is infectious.
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank YOU!!!
Connie says
Yep, I agree with you.
I would say cleaning makes me happy and refreshed when it’s done or getting rid of things we don’t need. Either to donate or sell. I like making crafts sometimes as well. Also shopping makes me happy! As well as hanging out with my family! 🥰
K.K. says
These are GREAT tips! I enjoy a lot of the same ones as well. 🙂 I have not spent as much time lately with fun reading, but this is a great reminder to put that back in!
Arika says
If you need a great podcast episode, Michelle Obama was recently on the We Can Do Hard Things podcast. I’ve gathered you’re not a Glennon Doyle fan, but this conversation was wonderful (mostly just Mrs. Obama talking) and not one bit political. I found her thoughts on marriage and motherhood so down-to-earth and relatable, and in fact found myself thinking, ‘I bet Shay would love this’, as it reminded me of some of the things you and Andrew talk about in your cute patio videos! It was just an easy, refreshing listen. The episode was on March 27, so you have to scroll down a bit to find it.
sandi says
These comments have encouraged me to stop more and find some JOY. I’m in a phase where I thought I would have more margin to do things I enjoy but actually have less. After four years of having drivers in the home I am back to being the driver. Instead of embracing that time in the car with the last kid in the house I dread sitting in the car pool line or waiting after a practice. These moments are fleeting and I need to change the narrative in my head. Thanks to all of the commenters and you for the reminder.
Ruby Huling says
I’m a retiree now raising a 9 year old (she brings me joy) and I love the time I spend waiting in the car line at school. I’m either reading a book or scrolling on FB. Also, it gives me time to think!
Sophie Brown says
Love this post and completely agree that eliminating or at least limiting “news” has helped my mood and mental health so so much! Sometimes thinking about the big picture is very overwhelming so appreciating the little things (like weeding or just playing with the dog) is calming.
Julia says
#10….I loved your UGG slippers but the price point was a little much and some of the reviews weren’t so good. I still loved them so I started looking around and found these dupes! Love having something cozy but not crazy hot to put my feet into.
Fireside for Dearfoams New Castle, Cairns, Benalla, and Sydney styles. They are 100% Australian genuine shearling scuff slippers with an indoor/outdoor sole. There is always a coupon code or sale going on, too.
I’ve been wearing the Cairns for two years now and I love them. They have held up very well and I love the supportive sole. I have the gray because I like to coordinate with my robe. I was so afraid they would be discontinued that I bought several pairs on sale!
Anne says
Did you see that Steve Tyrell is performing in Galveston next month?
Mix and Match Mama says
I did not?! I would love to see him in concert.

My simple joys: Sunshine, showtunes, books, travel& white wines spritzers! 🙂

Reading your blog is something that brings me joy each day! I honestly look forward to your content and taking a few mins away from work to see what you and your sweet family are up to. I also have a “gratitude practice” that helps me find joy each day. When you can name 5 things you’re grateful for each day, little or big, it puts your mindset in a different perspective.
AliJ. says
I LOVE this! I’ve tried eliminating the news and like you said, if it is big enough, I’ll hear about it. I can then choose if I want to find out more about it. I also try to surround myself with positive people. My husband is a very positive person so that definitely helps. I have quite a few friends that I believe fall into the “positive” category as well. It rubs off on you! I’ve also tried to limit screen time. I especially have edited down my bloggers that I read on the daily. I was finding myself comparing my house to theirs or spending way too much money to have the look in my home or even in my appearance. I also make sure I go to bed a bit early so I can read. Now that we have nicer weather in the midwest, I can go outside after dinner with the dog on the porch and read – we both enjoy being out there.
Lindsay says
I love this and as others have echoed your blog is the only one I consistently read (for 12 years now!) because this space you have created also brings a little joy to my morning! I love listening to podcasts as well. I have listened to Lewis Howes’ The School of Greatness for years! I recommend you look into it! He recently started a new podcast called The Daily Motivation which consists of 7-10 minutes snippets from his longer interviews! It is such a great way to kick start the day without committing a ton of time!
Bethany says
Our morning drive taking the kids to school, getting up really early and reading my Bible (always worth it once I am doing it!), fresh cut grass, visiting the mountains, also watering my ferns in the summer!, and sounds silly but I love doodling.🤗
Kelly says
Same to everything you shared, with the exception of jam making 😉
I also would add sweet tea- that first sip just gets me every morning- a gratitude journal, cleaning and thanking God for each space and person who dwells here, and cooking for my family. It makes me so happy to know that, even on the really, really hard days, we have to eat, and I can bless my family with their favorites. I love your outlook on life, and appreciate you sharing !
Jaren says
I started listening to Steve Tyrell and French Cooking Music radio when you mentioned it years ago. I absolutely love the way it makes me feel! You’ve also inspired me to listen to more podcasts lately. It makes folding those clothes and driving to and from practices for my kids not so much of a chore. And catching up on your blog is always a source of joy for me too!!
Valencia says
I to have stopped listening to the news. So much negativity happening in the world and it was always bringing me down. Game Changer.
Kristin says
Shay – thank you for sharing this blog post! I’ll echo the sentiments of some of your other readers and say that I love coming here each day for the positive vibes and energy you put out into the world. I’m still blown away and processing your most recent Ashby post. You’re dealing with a lot behind the scenes and always bring joy in your writing.
I listened to a podcast recently saying it’s important to know at least 3 things that can bring you back to yourself when you’re feeling stressed or out of whack – you have a great list! For me it’s sunshine, tennis/running and quality time with my husband, kiddos or puppy! I also love the 30 min of quiet I get in the mornings before anyone wakes up 💙💙
Janet Inman says
JOY! A little 3 letter word that can change a person’s day. I find JOY in writing in my gratitude journal every evening. I write 3-5 things that I was grateful for that day. Another thing that makes me happy is just praying throughout the day. I have found that I feel closer to God sometimes when I am driving or just out and about that during specified prayer time. My husband brings my iced tea to me while I am still in bed almost every morning which is wonderful and brings me so much happiness and gratitude. One of the other things that brings me so much JOY is spending time with my grandchildren. Nothing makes me happier than a big hug around the neck and an “I LOVE YOU GEE!”
Amy says
This is one of my favorite post! It just made me joyful reading it. There is nothing better than number 14 for me!!! I love me some fresh sheets. Organizing a drawer or cabinet (or anything really) is something I love to do and brings joy. Hope you have a great rest of your week.
Prayers going up for Ashby’s upcoming surgery.

I love incorporating things like this into my day to make life more enjoyable. I have a habit on Monday mornings now – I get up a little earlier, get a cup of coffee and take a bubble bath while I listen to the newest At Home with Sally podcast. It is a gentle and uplifting way to start a new week! I don’t dread Monday mornings!

I love this post so much. One thing I’ve been doing more after reading this was listening to podcasts. Great idea! I also finally got the chance to listen to “the stories we tell”. That really helped give me hope and power for being a mixed race (adopted Asian). ❤️
