The most requested blog topic each and every year…a day in the life posts 🙂 .
Just like always, I picked a random date on my calendar, wrote it down, set a reminder alarm on my phone and off I went documenting our day.
Here is our February 20th in photos…
I am sleeping in more often now than not (5:00 is more my “norm” now), but two days a week, I like to go to classes that start early which means…I wake up early. This was one of those days.
Coffee, quiet time and a little reading before getting up and getting ready.
Yankee snoozing by my fire while I do my quiet time 🙂 .
Alrighty, time to go! I’ve changed from my pjs to my yoga clothes and am heading out the door…
…here I am walking into my hot yoga class.
After an hour of hot yoga, I head back home but first…
…I grabbed me a coffee 🙂 .
When I got home, I said bye to Kensington (who was just about to leave for her school day) and then…
…pulled clothes from the dryer and…
…moved the clothes from the washer to the dryer.
Next up, it was time to make the littles breakfast and on this morning…
…they wanted waffles with…
…Nutella and peanut butter. Ashby would rather not eat breakfast, but her medicine requires some food in her stomach, so it’s non-negotiable…thus, I will pretty much let her eat anything she wants.
While they finished up eating breakfast…
…it was time for me to make my bed…
…awwww! So much better!
After that…
…I grabbed my girlies, and we headed off to school.
When I came home, Smith was in the middle of making himself breakfast, so I helped him a bit…
…and we chatted a minute before I took my coffee and headed…
…upstairs. I like to check my blog, check my email and get my day rolling before I take my shower and officially “sit down to work for the day”…
…It was 7:55 AM and three out of four kiddos were at school and things seemed to be moving right along.
Andrew took Smith to school, and I…
…headed for the shower with my entourage in tow.
Before…
…after. So many things to note here. First, I just realized that my clock is set to the wrong time, so ignore that part…but take a look at how many minutes transpired between the two pictures. Why did it take me so long to shower and get dressed when I didn’t even blow dry my hair? Because a few minutes after I got out of the shower, I heard Andrew basically yelling from the kitchen, so I threw on my robe and ran in there. This is how the conversation went:
Andrew: I sliced my finger cutting my chicken for my lunch (that he was putting into the container to take to work).
Me: Do you need stitches?
Him: (Holding his hand above his head wrapped in a kitchen towel) No.
Me: You’re not even looking at it. What if you need stitches?
Him: It’s fine.
Me: How do you know?
Him: I don’t need stitches (as it continues to bleed through the towel).
Me: Sit down so you don’t faint.
Him: I’m not going to faint.
Me: Well, I need to sit down because I think I might faint. (I don’t do well with cuts.)
Him: Ironically, I have an appointment to give blood today.
Me: (Looking around at his blood all over my kitchen) Ummmm…I think you just did.
Him: It’s fine.
Me: It doesn’t look fine. Let me clean up this mess and put your chicken away.
Him: I’m totally fine (as he proceeds to do it all himself with his hand over his head still wrapped in the kitchen towel).
Me: Um, since you seem to have this under control, I’m going to finish getting ready. Holler if you need a ride to the hospital.
Him: I’m fine.
Anyone else married to someone like this???
Here I am ready for work. Andrew hollered bye on his way out the door. I’m assuming he’s headed to work…but he could be on his way to give blood or get stitches. Maybe we’ll find out more as our “day in the life” continues to unfold below? In the meantime…
…I sat at my desk the rest of the morning and worked with my pups…
…all three of them with me the whole day 🙂 .
Around noon, it was time for lunch…
…this scramble has recently turned into my favorite lunch. I am sharing the details HERE today as well! I can whip it up in about five minutes.
After lunch, the weather was GORGEOUS, so it was time…
…to walk my pups. I always walk them when the weather is the most gorgeous that day. Sometimes, it’s the morning and other times, it’s the afternoon. It was 42 degrees this morning, so I waited until it was a glorious 68.
When I got back home, I decided to take…
…one more cup back to work with me.
Baaaaaaack for an afternoon of work 🙂 .
The doorbell rang, and guess what arrived?!
…my latest order of LMNT 🙂 . I promptly enjoyed an orange one.
Back to work upstairs…but with the door open to enjoy the day.
Before I knew it, it was time…
…to walk to school and pick up these two girls 🙂 .
We walked home, dropped off their things and then they had after school tutoring. I drove them there, dropped them off and…
…stopped by the pharmacy. #mylifeisjustsointeresting
I did a little more work and then grabbed the girls and headed back home.
From here, it was kind of chaos. Kensington came home, Andrew and Smith arrived home…
…we took a very serious photo and then, it was time for guitar lessons…
…and dinner prep and all the things.
Okay guys, from here, Andrew is going to grill burgers, we’ll eat outside, I’m going to clean up after dinner, put away that load of laundry, take a bath, tuck my kiddos in bed and then head there myself to read my book and go to sleep (hopefully by 9:30!).
And that is a day in our life 🙂 .
This is actually the second “day in the life” post from this month! If you missed…
…my DAY IN THE LIFE ON NANTUCKET {02.01.24} make sure you catch that one too!
Have the best day, friends! I’ll see you tomorrow! xx

Best line of the day-
Him: Ironically, I have an appointment to give blood today.
Me: (Looking around at his blood all over my kitchen) Ummmm…I think you just did.
Okay, I am crying and laughing this morning while reading this scenario!!!!!

Like really…what are the odds, right?!

Curious- Have you been implementing Intermittent Fasting into your health journey? If so, can this be a future blog post. I’m wanting to do it but I’m slightly nervous. Especially because I work at a bakery and immediately get hungry when I go to work so I try to eat before to stay away from any treats lol. I purchased some lmnt so I’m hoping that will curb the appetite! Thanks for sharing your day.
Mix and Match Mama says
What I’m eating now/how I’m eating is my next wellness post! Stay tuned!!
Angela says
I can’t wait for you to share your next wellness post, as I’m curious, also!! I’m trying intermittent fasting, but then I hear so much debate about how one should be eating more frequently to help with their metabolism. I just get so confused on what really works. Excited to hear what you’re doing, Shay!!
Also…I love these “Day in the Life” posts!! It sounds so weird, but it helps me organize my life to be a little more productive. Thank you for always being a bright spot in my day, Shay!!

These are my favorite kinds of posts! I love learning about people’s lives! Thanks for sharing!

It feels like mine where it’s semi calm & routine until after school. Then all the activities, practices & schedules are a bit all over the place until bed time. I completely relate.

Andrew sounds so much like my dad! My dad went for a run one day and got attacked by a dog during the first mile, he didn’t get rabies information, and then proceeded to run 12 more miles! When he got home, my mom had to force him to call his colleague who is an infectious disease doctor because he wasn’t listening to her about needing to go to the ER. #men
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh my gosh!!! #men is right!!

Can you link your coffee maker?? We are in the market for one similar to this style! Love these posts!

The one here in this post is many years old, but we have this (updated) model on Nantucket. We love them! https://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/jura-z10-aluminum-white-fully-auto-espresso-machine/?_br_psugg_q=jura%20z10%20automatic%20coffee%20machine

Funny how Andrew was “fine” but yelled loud enough to get you in the room with him. 😉
Mix and Match Mama says
RIIIIIIIGHT?!
Susan says
But did he get stitches?! Don’t leave us hanging! 😉
Mix and Match Mama says
Nope…probably should have, but he didn’t.

Where did you get your makeup mirror that’s in your bathroom? I love it!
Mix and Match Mama says
I’ve had it now for two years and LOVE IT!! https://shopstyle.it/l/b8j9F

Love this. I’m curious about the pink mirror on your bathroom counter. I’m looking for something similar.

Amy says
You left us on the edge of our seats!! So no stitches?!
Mix and Match Mama says
No stitches. Just a big bloody thumb with a Band-Aid…
Elizabeth Dunleavy says
My husband is the same and I would most likely have fainted!
Can you share where your nightstands are from? I’ve been looking for something similar and love the size of yours!
Mix and Match Mama says
I would rather see pretty much any other injury besides a knife. I wish I had sources for either nightstand, but they’re both super old, and for the life of me, I cannot remember. I’m sorry!
Jennifer Meehan says
I’m so curious: did Andrew need sutures?! I’m also married to an Andrew who will take it one step further. A couple of years ago, he lacerated his knee on a shell at the beach. It need stitches. It OBVIOUSLY needed stitches. My Andrew says “well, it’ll clot eventually. I’ll take care of it when we get home”. Not even kidding: 4 HOURS LATER. This man grabs what he needs and then proceeds to suture his leg up himself at my dining room table 🤦🏻♀️ with our 5 year old hovering and watching. Never a dull moment
Mix and Match Mama says
Stop it! Stop it right now! Agh! That’s terrible!!! He tried showing me his finger later last night, and it looked gross, but no sutures. He did reschedule that blood donation though and is doing it today instead. That was probably a good call.
Jamie says
Do all three of your dogs walk well together on a leash? I have two and even that can be tricky haha
Mix and Match Mama says
They do. They’re all pretty excited/hyper most days, but they never bicker with each other.
Mandie says
Could you break down your mornings a little more please? Like what time you leave for yoga, how long you do your quiet time, how long you read, etc. you just get so much done before 8 am that I’m curious how it is broken down? I love these posts. They motivate me!
Mix and Match Mama says
Sure! That could probably be a whole post, but in a nutshell, I give myself an hour for my coffee/quiet time/reading time. On mornings like this, it’s more like 55 minutes, so I was back in my closet getting ready by 5:05ish and out the door by 5:15. My quiet time is usually around 40 minutes (more or less depending on how much that day we are to read in The Bible Recap) so that always gives me at least 10 minutes or more to read for leisure.
Kiki says
I have a very similar lunch – but I use a “country hash” from TJs which is basically chopped onion, peppers etc then I scramble 1 egg with egg whites from TJs. Serve it with sliced avacado – it is sooo good.
Mix and Match Mama says
Delish!!
Terry says
Hysterical! Yes, I have a husband just like that!!
Just curious, what brand of mattress do you have?
Mix and Match Mama says
A Sleep Number!
bette says
so … did andrew end up giving blood or getting stitches?
Mix and Match Mama says
He rescheduled his blood donation to today and opted out of stitches…sigh.

Shay, this is off-topic, but have you read The Women by Kristen Hannah yet? I am reading it now and I am obsessed – I don’t want it to end! I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on it!
Mix and Match Mama says
You’re going to have to wait for a book review 😉 . I love me some Kristen Hannah! Have you read The Great Alone?
Anne says
Do all four kiddos head to bed early like you and Andrew? I remember times in high school I would be up until 11pm some nights finishing my homework.
Mix and Match Mama says
K goes to bed the earliest because she has to be at school the earliest. This means though that she’s home every day by like 2:45, so she has a lot of time to do homework after school before she goes to bed (typically by 8:30). Smith goes to bed last, but at this point, it’s not super late (by 10:00) because he to wakes up early (next year, he’ll have to wake up super early like K).
sandi says
I am NOT married to an Andrew… but my husband is. I’ve gotten clumsy in my later years (some testing going on regarding that) and cut myself frequently. My finger wrapped in a damp paper towel with another towel around that held above my head while continuing to fix dinner… that is a more common sight in our kitchen that I would like to admit. I’m fine… it’s fine… everything is fine.
PS this sounds worse than it really is but it does happen several times a year.
Sheaffer says
Okay, that’s it. I’m having eggs for lunch.
Natasha says
My dad just stitched himself up with some black thread when he cut himself badly enough for stitches… #nothankyou

Do your kids have daily chores, like laundry, dishes, etc…? Would love a post on what this looks like in your family. Do you give allowances? Always enjoy A Day In Your Life posts.🥰
Mix and Match Mama says
Everyone has their chores but I would call them more like “weekly” as most of it doesn’t happen every day (cleaning up dog poop doesn’t necessarily have to happen daily, they do their own laundry but again, that’s not daily, taking out the trash only happens on Monday nights, etc). My big kids do get a monthly allowance now for their contributions, and the littles will too once they’re a bit older (but they still do chores that are age-appropriate for them now).
Tami Meng says
I would love to know the times you fit in reading besides bedtime!
Mix and Match Mama says
The months when I read the most books are the months when I travel the most (flights, airport time, by the beach, etc). In “normal” life, I read a little each morning, always at night, and then anytime I’m waiting (so under the dryer at the hair salon, while my kids are at the dentist/doctor/therapy, while I’m waiting at my doctor, or for a soccer practice to end, etc). I use the Kindle app on my phone which makes it easy to even read in line at the grocery store or pharmacy if I have to wait a few minutes.
Sharon says
Hi Shay! Two questions — do you have a blog post about how you approach your oral health? I made it one of my monthly goals to get on top of my oral health and I’d love to see your routine here. Also, do you still have your own monthly goals? I miss the days that you would do a dedicated post on all your goals every month!
Mix and Match Mama says
I do not. I could write one though! And I so appreciate your feedback here. I will keep this in mind. THANK YOU!
Jennibell says
Those monthly goals inspired me then and they are what got you back into reading, right? I now still do the monthly goal thing, but just at work…but now, just reading and replying to this comment, makes me want to try personal goals again!

Looks like a great Tuesday!

Love the day in the life post. Looks like so much food for lunch for someone who s so fit and trim. Do you always eat such a hearty lunch???
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! I am trying to consume as much protein as possible for building muscle.

Hi Shay. May I ask where you got your black fleece jacket you wore to yoga? Looking for something exactly like this!
Have a great rest of the week Shay!

Thank you Shay!

Love Day in the Life’s! I’m curious if you have time set aside for scrolling on your phone? Do you set timers for this?
Mix and Match Mama says
I always set timers when I’m on social media (I use my apple watch timer). I try never to be on there more than five minutes at a time.
Anita Hays says
Yep, my husband is pretty much like Andrew as far as how he handles cuts, like it’s a big deal but yet it’s not a big deal and he won’t do anything about it but hold a cloth on it to stop the bleeding. Once he sliced his finger with a mandolin (after I told him not to slice the cucumber so fast). We now keep steri strips/butterfly closures handy. Thankfully he will use those to “stitch” his wound together. That’s progress.
Lindsey Beckski says
Can you do a full post on monthly allowance? We are just about to enter that phase and I’m so curious / need advice. Also, does K drive to school on her own? If so, how did you decide what car to get her? Again, about to enter that territory. Thanks in advance!
Mix and Match Mama says
I can totally do a post on it (I’m not sure we’re doing it ‘right’, but maybe other mamas can chime in and help). K doesn’t get her license until September, but we’re in a carpool where one morning and one afternoon a week I take four girls and then their moms do the same. Next year, she’ll drive herself.
Andie Ruppert says
Not sure why men don’t want to get medical attention for most things! My husband was trying to remove the pole from our basketball hoop. It was rusted and wouldn’t come out. So, he gets the drill. He literally drilled into the palm of his hand! He had to put the drill in reverse to get it out. Pole was rusty too! And, yes, he refused to have it looked at. That wound took about 3 months to fully heal. It was oozing blood and other fluids for more that 2 months! 🤦♀️
Lindsey says
Love this post. Andrew…ha! I am late to the party, and just read through the comments. I, too, am inspired by how much you get done early in the day. I’m having trouble going to bed earlier – so I sleep as late as possible. My kids don’t hop on the school bus until 8:50, so we tend to stay up later, spending time together, watching a TV show, etc. and it’s 11 or so when I go to sleep. But by the time they are off in the morning, I do my Bible recap (first time doing it – I listen to the Bible app, but then I typically read through it before listening to TLC’s recap) and eat breakfast and clean up the kitchen, it’s like…10! Then I go to see your blog and look where I am now…it’s after 11. Self control, self control! Ha…
Mix and Match Mama says
And I am SO THANKFUL you are here!!! I loved reading your routine!!
