Happy Monday, friends!
It’s April, it’s the day after Easter…I would say that spring is truly and officially HERE 🙂 .
Guess what I’m talking about though today?
CHRISTMAS!
Well, not really, but last year, after about three years of really wanting a change, Andrew and I gifted ourselves a “Kitchen and Great Room” refresh!
On December 1st, we started ordering, changing and rearranging things to give our kitchen and great room area a nice little update…and it legit just got completed this last Wednesday. Yup. For example, I ordered my barstools on December 9th and they didn’t arrive until March 12th…things just took a bit, so we’ve been slowly getting it all updated and now today, I can share the pics with you 🙂 .
My last KITCHEN UPDATE was ironically on June 15, 2020…and for those of you who have been around a bit then you also know that just four days later, on June 19th, it rained inside our home and pretty much destroyed it. It took us about a year to rebuild after that.
I say all that to say, I have been itching to give it a really good refresh pretty much since then (but at the time, I had to focus on other things that took priority). Now that we have the Nantucket house all fixed up and that project is over, we were able to do a mini makeover downstairs in McKinney.
Today, I just have a bunch of pics to share. I’ll list as many sources as I can at the bottom as well.
Here we go starting with some “before” and “afters” for your Monday…

And now, here are just a bunch of random “after” photos for you to enjoy 🙂 …
And there you go!
This space is really nice and big, and I wanted a lot of places for people to be able to sit, gather and visit or watch TV (the chairs swivel which has been amazing!), and I wanted to keep the coziness of the floors and the darker pieces along with all of my light fixtures, but I also wanted to brighten and lighten as well. I am very, very, VERY pleased with the results!
So, that’s what we’ve been up to! Honestly, I haven’t talked a lot what we did for Christmas this year yet…but instead of traditional gifts this year at our house, everyone received something “different”. More to come about those things later, but for now, I’m going to go sit on my couch and read your blog comments 🙂 .
It’s always so much fun to share my home with you all. I wish you were all here in person drinking coffee with me.
Should you want a list of sources, I did my best below.
Happy Monday, friends! xx

Love, love all .. love the lighting, love the colors, and light furniture too. Looks so good! Thanks for all links. We are about to begin a remodel on an old farmhouse and I may use some of these if available. 🙂
Amy Heinl says
The refresh is stunning and so warm and inviting. It also really lightened up the feel of the whole area. You guys did an amazing job
Bev McGuire says
Love how light and bright it is! My favorite is the kitchen island and stools!!!!
Debbie Hibbert says
Absolutely beautiful!! So fresh and light!😍
Lauren Sheaffer Sims says
WOWWWWZA!!!!! What a difference! All of these updates are absolutely beautiful!!! I can’t get over your new sofa, AND THOSE BARSTOOLS! Love! All of the new items are so light and bright! I love it all so much!
Grace says
it all looks great!
Karen says
Absolutely gorgeous, from top to bottom, but I will admit, on first glance, I can’t help but wonder how you will keep all of that light and bright and beautiful furniture, etc. pristine with 4 growing yougins and 3 pups? 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Mr. Clean Magic Eraser…and it’s still new. Ask me again in a year. Bahahaha!
Angela says
Shay, I recommend you grab a bottle of Shout Laundry stain stick! We just updated our home with light colored furniture (sectional, barstools, chair), too! When some greasy food fell onto our linen colored barstools, I was able to wash out the grease spot with the Shout laundry stain stick. (The one in the blue bottle with the orange plastic nubby brush on top.) I’ve used it on our sectional and chair, too! I found it works way better than the carpet/fabric stain remover that was recommended to me! And with teens and a dog (and this mama who accidentally spilled some coffee on the sectional), this Shout stain stick has been perfect… helping us keep our light colored furniture looking new!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you, thank YOU!
Bre says
Can’t help but feel like there are some Nantucket vibes creeping in to this Texas abode 😉 ;). Love it!
Megan says
Folex is what I use to spot clean my white furniture. It works wonders!
Mix and Match Mama says
Folex is amazing on rugs too!!
Rebecca says
Just gorgeous!!! Your family is so blessed to have you adding so much beauty into your home!!
Do you have a favorite quartz countertop cleaner? I am on the search!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh nothing I just love, love, love. Right now, we’re using one from Weiman.
Anne says
Try the DIY stone cleaner from Clean Mama.
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank YOU!!
Lisa N says
My quartz guy told me to just use windex so I do🤷🏻♀️
Mary says
Mrs. Meyers…. I love to change the scents with the seasons. If I need a little “extra” I use a Clorox wipe.
K.K. says
I love the neutrals though I’ll admit that blue on your island was very pretty too!!
With neutrals, I love that you can pick out pops of colors when you want and what you want, too. Gorgeous space, and those couches and chairs look so SO comfy.
I’m wishing to be hanging with you there too!! 🙂
Oh and a question: do you have any issues with scuffs from shoes when people sit at your bar stools?
We want to become a “kick your shoes off at the door” kind of house, but we hate to force our guests into socks. (Shoes are just so dirty…)
Mix and Match Mama says
Sometimes, but I can always remove them with a Magic Eraser! Those things are MAGICAL!!
K.K. says
Nice!! It seems to be a popular comment in this post, too! 🙂
Jeanie says
I love it! It looks very updated and light without losing any of the special details, I love the pantry wall paper and the kitchen table chairs especially!
Jessica says
It looks amazing! The lighter color sofa, chairs, kitchen chairs, bar stools and coffee table make it all brighterand not so heavy. It feels light and cozy. You did a great job! I love the wall paper in the pantry.
Ann says
That wallpaper is everything!
Marianne Hardwick says
Looks gorgeous!!
Kathy says
The furniture really brightened the area! Very nice!
Libby says
Very nice and refreshing. I wish I could find people that do good work. We’ve been through 3 handymen! Sigh
Kelly says
Looks great! I love the new barstools and painted island- looks so fresh! And the sectional is amazing! Beautiful- glad you are happy- that’s always the best feeling – when the plans come together the way we hope !
Kay says
You NAILED it!!! (Realtor over here). I absolutely love the way you combined light and dark. The new furniture is amazing and those CHAIRS. I want them! I also love the fun wallpaper in the pantry. It totally transforms the space! I hope you enjoy it and thanks for sharing with us all!
Angela says
Beautiful and so light and airy!!! It looks great, Shay!!!
Lisa N says
Just beautiful! Stunning and cozy all at the same time😊 Enjoy!
Cherie says
I love the new look! Quick question about the swivel chairs does Andrew fit in them? My people are tall, all over 6′, and I’ve been struggling to find swivel chairs to fit them. Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
He does! I mean, he doesn’t have a ton of extra room, but yes, he fits nicely in them.
Mary says
It’s beautiful!! Fresh, bright and cozy all at the same time 🙂 We debated about a leather sofa but went with a light upholstered one very similar to yours….I love it but nervous if I made the right choice with kids and a dog, ha. 😬 So of course my question is whether you have any tips on keeping yours clean (while still letting everyone enjoy it and feel comfortable on it). Thanks Shay!!
Denise Noss says
Loved how you layered the rug in the living room.
Do you mind me asking what sizes are thet?
Mix and Match Mama says
I just looked for you. They are 12×18 and 10×14.
Kathy Schikevitz says
LOVE LOVE LOVE! What a difference the lighter furniture makes and the clean lines with the sectional versus the couches. great job on all the pieces. Love the chairs at the kitchen table as well! Would love name of the John Michael couch – which design. Love the angle of the back… Thank you in advance!
Amanda Sinclair says
It’s so light and airy and really brings the living room and kitchen together. Love the fun wallpaper as well!
Beth Knecht says
So fun! Are you enjoying more lighter and brighter styles now? I love the northeast vibe with light and bright!
Yolanda McLean says
It is all so lovely! I love the light paint and furnishing and the pops of dark with the beams and built-ins, flooring too. So cozy!
Jennifer says
You are the best decorator! Love everything you do! So beautiful!
Christy says
I have white countertops & floor tile (and a one year old)
If you have really tough stains, dip a magic eraser in bleach and I swear it gets everything off if you scrub hard enough!!
Laci L Murray says
I love the neutrals and touch of blues!
sandi says
That wallpaper is spectacular! I will admit to liking the pop of blue on the island, BUT it is amazing what a lighter color paint can do to a space. Your before space looks like ours, a couch and many chairs… with a family of six everyone needs a place to sprawl. Add grandparents or friends and those spaces fill quickly. It is amazing how spacious the rooms feels by adding the sectional and removing two chairs. It looks very inviting. The light colors will be fine and the way fabrics are designed these days, cleaning small spills is a breeze.
Sandy says
It looks so beautiful! I saw your couch is from Stacy’s. Where do you and your mom find to be the best places to shop for quality (made to last) couches and chairs? I need them but don’t know where to start!
Mix and Match Mama says
Stacy’s was great, we like Wayfair too (that’s where you can find the couches from my brother’s collection that we have as well!). If you’re local, my mom likes Weir’s too.
Angie R says
I love that big sectional!!
Will be fun to see Christmas 2024 and where the tree is!
Mix and Match Mama says
We’re curious too, bahahaha!
Sharon says
Everything looks beautiful but I’m curious why you have a rug on top of a rug.
Mix and Match Mama says
For a layered look 🙂 .
Audrey D says
I love that layered look.
Chrissy says
Wow, looks so nice and light! I think the biggest difference is the sectional sofa–really pulls the room together! Curious and wondering for myself as well, what do you do with your old furniture? Sell it/donate it?
Mix and Match Mama says
We sold it all! We sold it on Facebook Marketplace.
Keisha Dawson says
It’s beautiful! The living room furniture looks so cozy!
Sonya Z says
I am madly in love with your new kitchen chairs. ❤️ A beautiful refresh that looks so cozy.
Amy McConnell says
I love it all! Wonderful job 🙂
Robyn Gregory says
Absolutely stunning! The light sectional really lightens us the great room! Love the layered rugs! Gorgeous. Enjoy!
Angela Pleune says
Shay, It looks so light and bright! It’s amazing what a difference a “refresh” can make instead of a complete remodel. I love everything!!
Arika says
Looks so pretty! I love the big floor lamp. Let me know if you still have a link for that one.
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s not new, but I think they still have it at Restoration Hardware.
Darlene says
What’s with the animal heads? Are they real?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes, they’ve all been there a long time. Andrew went to South Africa four years in a row with a group of guys and over that time, they built a school and outfitted it with a kitchen and then stocked it with meat harvested from animals (including these).
Shawnna Griffin says
hey girl- ooh the refresh is so nice! Y’all did a great job! A little coastal colors there mixed in huh? So pretty!
Emily V. says
It looks amazing Shay! So warm and cozy while still being “bright”! I always look forward to your posts (even 10 years later!), thanks for always showing up!
Jodie says
It all looks so pretty. Do you have a link or details on the round rug under the breakfast table? Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
That isn’t new. I bought it a few years ago from Pottery Barn.
Jaime Matherson says
do you still have the pantry sign with your recipes on it?
Mix and Match Mama says
I do not. After 10+ years, I parted with that too.
Laura Holmes says
Love the update-especially the pantry wallpaper! It really struck me that this is now a “big kids” house. Ie: upholstered dining chairs. I love to see how family houses change and adapt as they grow. Looks great!
Lindsay D says
Love it!
Alyssa says
Just lovely Shay! It’s a little Nantucket touch to your Texas home! The Sullivan woven chairs are just the right touch for your counter! The creamier tones are just perfect… Isn’t it nice to lighten things up? We did that as well when our youngest was about 8 years old and we knew she was out of the drawing on furniture phase 🙂
Karen in Virginia says
Hi Shay, did you happen to see House Hunters on HGTV the other night? It featured a family in McKinney! I saw your town square. The only reason I knew everything, is because of your blog! See if you can find it. You may even know the family!
Mix and Match Mama says
No way?! I did not see that! I wonder who the family was on the show? That is so fun!
Kandi L Barber says
Looks so pretty. I especially love the picture of the terriers <3
Dawn says
Looooooovvvvvveeeeeee!!!!
Beth says
Beautiful refresh! Is the paint color on the island the same as the rest of the cabinets? Also, where are the beautiful sofa pillows from? Thank you!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! The paint is the same on all cabinetry. The pillows are from either Pottery Barn or this little boutique in Southlake, TX called Sally Lynn’s.
Beverly says
Both before and after are beautiful. I would not h ave been brave enough for light color furniture with kids & teens. You really missed your calling. You should be an interior design as you have impeccable taste.
I love everything about it.
Mix and Match Mama says
You are too sweet. I was fortunate enough to grow up with one as a mama 🙂 .
Julie says
Love the updates! Can you tell me who did your back sliding door?
Mix and Match Mama says
I think all of that info is here in the post and/or the comment section: https://mixandmatchmama.com/2020/10/welcome-fall/
polly pover says
So funny to see your layered carpets. I just did that in my living my room and my husband said, “I just don’t get it!!” Ba ha ha!! Looks great!
Rebecca says
It looks beautiful! Is this the 2nd time your cabinets have been painted? Did they need any special prep? Ours were standard oak when we bought our house & we had them painted. That was ~7 yrs ago & I think they need a brighter white, so I wondered. Thanks so much! 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s the fourth time (I think that’s right) they have been painted. It took about 10 days. It was a messy, messy process to strip them and get them painted again (well and not poorly). Lucky Andrew was snowboarding during most of it…
Laura says
I absolutely love the fresh new look! You have such a gift in making your home look so cozy. I wish I had known you were getting rid of your end table and coffee table. I have admired both of those for years. I believe I would have flown the 1200 miles to McKinney to buy them from you.LOL Enjoy your “new” spaces.
Laura says
Love the lighter and brighter look! Am not a fan of dead animal heads hung as decorative items or trophies. It just creeps me out and I think it takes away from the vibe of the rest of the beautiful elegant room. My opinion, that’s all.
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh I’m not either. I actually came into my marriage from an anti-hunting family…but he seriously lets me do whatever I want in life, always supports and encourages me, and pretty much spoils me rotten, sooooo he can do his thing.
Katie Stewart says
Loving the coastal vibe that you’re bringing to Texas! Your family’s love for Nantucket shines through your TX home now. 😊
All beautiful additions, Shay! The light, coastal vibe is my jam! ❤️
Carla Brown says
Beautiful!
Love it ALL
Can I ask where did you get your floor lamps?
Mix and Match Mama says
Restoration Hardware! Thank YOU!!
Hope says
That couch looks so comfy! Great one to curl up with a blankie.
Karen says
Just stunning but warm as well… love it for your family! I know it isn’t new, but can you share a link to your range? Thanks in advance!
Amy says
Where is your side table from. Just did a Reno as well and need a small side table and that one looks perfect.
Thanks
Mix and Match Mama says
We have actually had that one upstairs in our play room for years and years. It’s from Restoration Hardware, but I repurposed it downstairs.
Danielle says
Absolutely love it! Honestly loved it before but the afters are stunning! Merry Christmas to you! 😉
Kacey says
SO much to LOVE!!! The wallpaper, bright refresh with your island paint and countertop change, the new living room furniture… obsessed! It’s giving coastal grandmother/Nancy Meyers and I’m in love <3
Karen says
Absolutely beautiful….love the refresh!! I just purchased a new dining room table and have your kitchen chairs bookmarked. How are you liking them? Would appreciate your thoughts…
Mix and Match Mama says
I love them! I was nervous about them being light in color and eating on them, but I can already tell you they seem easy to clean. They were the very last piece of the puzzle (arrived last week), and I’m so happy with them!
Karen says
Thanks so much!!
Laura says
I LOVE love love the refresh! It all looks fantastic. I have to say, besides the livingroom furniture, my favorite change is the pantry wallpaper! So fun and beautiful.
Charmin says
Beautiful as always! Love the “lighter” fabrics in the family room. I will admit though, I LOVED the blue island.🥲
Serena W. says
Absolutely stunning! It is so bright and yet still so cozy – you are so talented! I also cannot wait to see where the Christmas tree goes this year 😉
Larissa says
So beautiful, love it!! I just read through all the comments to see if someone asked about the breakfast table yet. 🙂 I’ve been looking for a round table and I love the base on yours! Where did you find it?
Mix and Match Mama says
Awww! That is our original one. My mom found it years and years ago. I don’t have a source.
Heather Resnick says
Love it! You’ve inspired me to refresh my family toom. Question – do you have a link for the round rug under the table in your kitchen? Thank you!
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s one I purchased several years ago from Pottery Barn. They *might* still have it or a similar one.
