My best suggestion for moving is that you designate each room in your new house to be a COLOR – and then label each box with a COLOR of the room it is going to. Then when you get to the house – put up a big paper in each room of whatever color it is. Movers don't know which is "Smith's Room" or in big houses what is dining room vs. living room, etc…..and you don't want to have to constantly be guiding every box and where it should go. Even if you do label the boxes with a description "dining room" that is fine… as long you put a sign in each room so they know what you are calling each room! Doing that is better than nothing – but the color system is great for those with terrible handwriting like me! 🙂
Also, designate a spot in each room you want the boxes so they aren't all put in the middle of the room. Designate a corner of each room with a sign where specifically you want the boxes to go.
The less you make the movers think, the quicker it will be! 🙂
I assume you are getting movers.
Hope you are doing great and enjoy 2013 so far!

I just moved at the beginning of this month, and my best tip is to get lots of help with the move! Our friends and in laws helped us, and it went very smooth!
-
First try to do a little bit everyday and do not put it all off until the very end. Organization is key so make sure to label, label, and label some more! I try to write on the outside of the box everything that is in there – which helps out tremendously when your looking for things!!! Good Luck!!!
-
Find somebody in your neighborhood or community that has just moved and ask for their old boxes! You can also ask moving companies if they have any used boxes they would give you. Good luck!
-
Pack up the small things first like pictures, vases, etc and pack up the rooms you use the least first. And get your big baby brother to help!!
-
As a girl who has moved four times in six years, thanks to the Marine Corps, I have learned many a thing about moving. My biggest piece of advice is if you are having movers come put anything you don't want them taking in one space (we usually pick a closet), and then tape it off so they don't go into it.
If you are doing it yourself, my tip would be to buy wardrobe boxes for closets. Seems obvious right?! They hold a huge amount of stuff on the bottom for shoes, etc and also have the rack for clothes. Also, they are great for the kids toys and bigger things that wouldn't fit in a normal box.
Good luck!
-
My best advice is to hire a mover. You will never regret it, it is money well spent. As far as packing, pack by room instead of by items. Much easier that way!
My name is Jodi.
-
My best advice is to label each box for which room it will go to on your new place. We were able to get large boxes from our local grocery store in the late evening when they were stocking shelves. Good luck!
-
My family and I move into our new house tomorrow, and i, like you, have 2 small kids, so trying to pack and organize and take care of them all at the same time was challenging. My suggestion to you, if you are moving yourselves w/o movers, is to plan a couple of days in advance to have your kids watched by someone else so that you can concentrate on packing. I would also suggest asking a very organized person to help you. For me, that as my sister-in-law. and really, thank God for her and her giving heart because she has helped me out so much and helped minimize my stress! She is also a very practical and objective person, so with her help i was able to get rid of ALOT of things that i realistically did not need or have not used in years. She is also so good at making things "fit" in boxes or the moving truck, so when we needed to get more things to fit, she was the one to call. And don't say no to help. If anyone offers their time, take them up on it! You will be glad that you did! Good luck!
-
My advice is to keep everything hanging! It is so much easier to keep all the clothes hanging and transfer them rather than packing and unpacking them all in boxes. Good luck!
-Kim R -
My best tip would be to just start now. Gather boxes everytime you go to the grocery store and start putting things away a little at a time. label every box so you know what it is. I bougth red tubs for my christmas stuff orange tubs for fall decorations etc. Hope this helps.
Kristin Stout -
My advice is to go through your stuff first and get rid of everything you haven't used in the last year!
-
plan ahead for free boxes! Shoe stores have the best ones. They are all about the same size, a good packing size and generally in much better shape than other stores.
-
Pack a little at a time, strat now. label everything. color code all your nice decorations christmas in red tubs, fall in orange tubs etc. Kristin Stout
-
Shay – my advice is to downsize your belongings as much as you can prior to the move. You may have things you don't use anymore or you don't want in the new house, donate it now before you move and then you don't have to pack and move it. We did that to a certain degree on our move this last year but not as much as we should have. good luck!
Doreen
-
My suggestion on packing is the same as what I posted on the food blog side….try to involve your kids! Even if it's as simple as letting them pack up and then unpack their stuffed animals. The whole move will be less stressful on them if you allow them to help out!
Kim Bayt -
Create “Open Me First” boxes- Pick one or two boxes per room as "Open Me First" boxes. Put in them the things you'll need first at your new location. Then mark the sides of the boxes so you'll know which ones are which.
-
Leave an empty box in each room (labeled) and when you are in these rooms, just constantly put things away that arent daily used, even getting the kids to help!
-
Go to your grocery store and ask them for boxes. Egg boxes are the best. Perfect size, and have handles. I use those for the things I want to move myself. Like my collectibles!
-
Don't move what you're not going to use! 🙂 Take the time to give away or sell any old clothes you're not going to wear, toys that don't get played with, or things you simply won't need in the new house, BEFORE you move. It seems like common sense, but it makes life ten times easier when trying to move in and organize things. Most of all, enjoy it! Order carry out and have a family "party" before you move in. Let the kids explore the house and make it fun for them and you!
-
We're an AF family and have had our share of moving. All of our moves have been international or coast-coast moves, so we've had experience with lengthy transition times, too. Some time ago, I had this same conversation with another blogger and she asked to post the tips on her blog; it was written specifically with having movers come do it all, but there are many things I would still do or adapt somewhat if I were to ever move myself: http://phillipsphamilyphive.blogspot.com/2009/09/moving-tips-101.html
A couple of things I would add- I am very particular about menus for a few weeks prior to the move- mainly because I can't move the food, but if you can pare down your pantry, it's certainly a lot less to pack and carry. Plastic tubs/baskets are helpful for organizing stuff in your transition home. Don't forget to keep out your trash cans, too.
-
My best tip is to work on a room at a time and get rid of anything that you do not use regularly and put it in separate boxes. Keep these in storage when you move and anything you do not use within the next year, just throw out.
-
My best tip is to be very organized!! Make sure you label each and every box. Also, keep all the boxes for each room together when you move, then you don't have to look around for them when you get there!
-
We have moved 7 times in 3 years! From Kentucky to Texas and back again 🙂 My favorite packing tool was the little saran wrap hand held tool that you can buy at Lowe's. It made wrapping pots, pans, coffee maker, etc so much easier than using tape! And we bought a big roll if bubble wrap too. Both made packing the kitchen a lot easier! Good luck!

Save every day items such as newspapers and grocery bags in advance. They are both great for wrapping breakables. And don't forget to label the boxes with the items so you don't have to go searching through them when you move in.

Purge what you no longer use. Label label label! Start early and keep like items together. Start slow so you don't get overwhelmed. Remember it will go back to 'normal' so try not to stress too much. Lastly, I almost always misplace something major, freak out, then find it, so just be prepared! Good luck!
-
I haven't done this yet, but it's a great idea: Stack your plates with styrofoam plates in between them…easier than wrapping each plate, but keeps them separated and cushioned. Genius!
-
Plan adhead. Purge what you no longer use.
Lable Lable Lable the boxes!
Do a little a day to not get overwhelmed.
Be prepared to misplace things and find it randomly one day!
Good luck -
We moved this summer and took on six weeks of a full house renovation and let's just say with little ones (mine were 3 and 1 at the time) it is NOT easy. It was probably hardest for my oldest. Change is just hard on them! So my tip is pack the kids stuff very last and once you move make sure it is the first thing you unpack. It wil help provide a sense of security for them and maybe a little bit of a sanity saver for you 😉 Best of luck!
-
I moved a few months ago with a 1.5 year old. It's insane moving with kids, but once you have all of your stuff in the correct rooms, I designated a certain room for each night of the week to unpack. So my first day there, I knew that the baby's room was most important, so I unpacked EVERYTHING in his room and got it completely done. Then, I knew that we'd need kitchen stuff, so I unpacked it (and a lot of the pantry stuff I went ahead and stuck right into the pantry).

Downsize! Go through your belongings now and donate/trash anything that hasn't been used in the past year. Good luck with the packing!
-
My tip would be make sure they are all labeled and as they are moving them put them in the room they should go in so when u go to unpack it will make it easy for you
Rebecca

Be sure to label each box with what is inside and get rid of things you don't need while you are packing. I donated alot of items to goodwill when my husband and I moved.
Casey Hayes

While you're packing, also clean out your stuff and de-clutter! Don't pack something that has been in the back of the drawer for years. Label boxes and keep boxes organized and not too heavy! Good luck and enjoy it! Go in knowing the process will be somewhat stressful and don't let small mishaps frustrate you!!
-
My best packing tip is: make sure to list what is inside each box, on the outside of the box. It makes it SO much easier when you need to unpack everything and have to find something specific!
-
From a momma who just moved overseas…
*Purge then Pack
*Pack by room – label every box w/detail
*Separate anything you can live w/out while in your rental and just keep it packed
*Move all bedding, linens very first so your first night can be comfortable
*Involve the kids and give yourself plenty of time
*Hire movers for the big pieces/furniture etc.Happy Move!
Morgan 🙂 -
my tip is to look of craiglist or facebook for somebody getting rid of boxes. that way you can get them for free! good luck!
-
The first night in our new house we hardly had any of our furniture. So my mom, my two brothers, and i had dinner on the kitchen floor. We were all just so excited for our new adventure together! We lived there for 12 years and the last night we were there we ate on the kitchen floor 🙂 as the end gets closer, don't forget to enjoy the house and all the wonderful memories that were had inside!
-
Free boxes! We were able to get boxes from a liqueur store. The boxes that wine bottles are delivered in are awesome. They have individual spaces for you to pack your crystal or any nice stemware 🙂
Good luck! Annie -
My advice would be to start early! Even if it means living out of boxes for a while it makes the actual day/days you move a lot easier. I also think it's important to stay organized and label, label, label :). What has also always made moving easier for me is having lots of help whether it be from friends, family, or movers! They can help take care of kids and dogs (well, family & friends not the movers), and having them around can help you stay sane and makes everything go by a lot quicker (and often times more fun)! Good luck!!
-
My best advice is to take pictures of what's inside each box you are packing and tape it on the outside so you will know what you have in each box without having to go through it. If you want to keep the same decorations in each room of your new house as they were in your old home, you can also take pictures of each room and pack items by room and area of the room for easy access and redecorating.
-
I like to take pictures of the items I put in each box when packing and tape the picture on the outside of each box so I know what is inside without having to open every box looking for one item.
-
Be sure to write on all 4 sides of the boxes what is inside, that way no matter how they are stacked after moving you can read the contents.
-
I started early collecting boxes from store recycling dumpsters. Most stores have 2, one for trash and one for boxes. Saved us a TON of money.
-
Start packing now. Even if it's just a couple of boxes a night so that your constantly making progress. Also label the boxes really clearly and even put a brief description of what in them so if you're searching for something specific it is easier to find. You can use rolling suitcases for heavy items like books so then you can roll it and it's easier to move. Good luck!
-
My best tip is to make sure to organize & clean out prior to packing! It will save you a ton of time & no sense in packing up something & taking it to your new house if you don't need it! Good luck 🙂
-
Whenever we go on a trip, I have to pack for myself and for my 3 kids (my husband only packs for himself). I make a very detailed list for all 3 of my kids and myself, down to the vitamins we'll need while we're away. I would be lost without that list!

Pack a box of things you will need the day of – toilet paper, paper towels, stuff you will need but don't necessarily think about!
-
How often do we have time to go through closets’, cabinets and drawers to clean them out and get rid of the pile-up? Never! And if we do have the time, it’s not necessarily what we choose to do. My advice would be to start packing early, take your time and do some purging along the way. That way you’re killing two birds with one stone! You will also be at a new home without all the clutter. Making room for new things, of course! 🙂 Good luck!
-
Oh my, we just did this 2 years ago and I'll be honest- I was a little rough. We put alot (most) of our stuff into storage and lived off the basics when we moved from Tyler to Houston to our permanent home. It made it alot easier to unpack & then repack our rental when the time came. It's a crazy time, but how exciting to be building! You can do it!!!
-
I have an almost 5 year old and we are moving soon after her birthday. I ask her how we should pack…..she said bubble wrap. So we are using bubble wrap to wrap the breakable stuff and her toys. I am also color organizing the boxes to the rooms. I am also making it into a game.
-
Use space bags for folded clothes! 🙂
-
My tip is to place paper plates between your glass plates so you don't have to wash them all.
-
Oh my, we did this when we made the move from Tyler to Houston and I'll be honest- it was rough (but you can do it!). We pretty much put everything except the essentials into storage. This made unpacking and repacking our rental much easier. Then it feels like Christmas when you find all your stuff in your new house! 🙂
-
My tip is to pack your plates with styrofoam disposable plates between them. So much easier than wrapping them!
-
My tip is to pack your plates with styrofoam disposable plates between them. So much easier than wrapping them!
-
My tip is to try and pack at least three boxes every day. And leave only the stuff you absolutely need out. Otherwise, books and toys not used every day go in a box!
AND My other tip is to try and eat up as much of the stuff in your refrigerator as possible. Don't go on big shopping trips. Packing the fridge and cleaning it out is the WORST job in my opinion!
-
I always clean and organize before I start to pack! Also, try to give anything away that you don't want/need so you're not bringing extra stuff with you! I also survived moving by making lists!! Make a list of things you will need at your rental house and things that can wait until your house. I would also only move a few decorations to your rental since you wont be there too long and you wont have to pack/move them twice! Last things, make detailed lists on each box so you know what is inside!! Hope some of this helps! Happy moving! 🙂
-
I love those rolls of plastic that looks like Saran Wrap. They work great for local moves if you want to wrap a filled side table or dressers to keep drawers in.
One other tip? Always wrap a mattress! They just get gross in moving vans and storage.
-
Make sure all your boxes are labeled!! It will make unpacking a lot easier.
-
Tip: Hire movers 🙂 LOL! Also, before moving make sure to declutter EVERYTHING! I made 3 piles before I moved (keep, throw away, donate) and that seemed to help all of us, including my 3 kids. Make sure to keep a few of the kids special toys/blankets/etc out of boxes. Let them keep them in a bag or something so they don't get put off until the last box to be unpacked. Thanks for the giveaway!
As I was reading through the comments I saw someone suggest about taking pics of what's inside the box and taping it to the outside…I will use that if I ever decide to move again. What a great idea!
-
If you have the time sort and go through everything before you pack it up. It's a great time to clean out and get rid of things you probably won't use. This is much easier than throwing it all in boxes and saying you'll sort it when you get to the new house.
-
Even if you have movers, invite friends and family to help with some of it – especially getting things set up like beds and the things you'll need right away. Someone can make beds while another person can be washing dishes. Also – pack one bag of just the bare necessities – toothbrush toothpaste shampoo deodorant etc for everyone in your family and take it with you to the new place. You'll have it in case night or morning comes and you can't find the box with that stuff! And back to having friends help – order pizzas and take a break together! Great conversation and fun memories!!!
-
does this mean the house sold?!!
as a military family we've moved alot!! my first tip is to relax!! do your best to not stress because one way or another its going to get done and stressing makes it sooo much harder.
label, label, label! be especially sure to label things like sheets, pillows…anything you will need the first night in the new house! it is NOT fun to be searching thru boxes for those things!
don't turn away help! i have a hard time accepting help sometimes but seriously? if friends & family offer to come help pack, let them!!!
i like to have my washer & dryer be the last thing on the truck so that they are the first thing off the truck at the new house! that way i can be washing the sheets, blankets, etc while everything else is being unloaded! (if you're anything like me, there is no way you're sleeping on those sheets after being in a box w/o washing them!)
and then just do atleast a few boxes each day so that it isn't as overwhelming!
and finally, have a bottle of your favorite wine ready for the first night in the new house! there is nothing like finally sitting down after the crazy that will be moving day and enjoying a glass of wine!! (or two!) =)
-
I would suggest to hire a mover 🙂
-
Hi! I'm Megan Walter! First off, I love your blog! You have the cutest little family!
I have a couple moving tips!
1. Break down or disassemble furniture, as many pieces as you can. It will give you way more room in your moving truck!
2. Start packing WAY in advance, a box at a time, and label what’s in it and what room it goes in!
Hope your moves are quick and painless! 🙂
-
We just moved this summer. The best tip someone gave me was to use towels (dish towels, hand towels, bath towels) to pack up the breakables. This was easier than using newspaper and didn't turn your fingers black. Once I unpacked, I put all the "used" towels in the wash and didn't have to worry about all the excess newspaper.
-
We had to move into a rental too before our house was finished. Our rental was furnished so it made it a lot easier. Try not to unpack a ton at your rental, only the necessities so you are not packing a bunch of stuff again. I think starting early is the best advice so you don't get stressed closer to the move. I would go through each room and pack up as much stuff as you can now and don't need in the next couple of weeks. Good luck! I always hated packing and unpacking. I wish I would have hired someone! 🙂

Go to the liquor store and get the boxes that have the dividers for wine bottles. They are great for packing many things – glasses, vases, wine! I love them!
-
My advice is to move as MANY things at once as you possibly can! The fewer the trips, the happier (and less exhausted) you'll be. 🙂
-
Most people pay quite a bit for bubble wrap but it's a great idea to use clean clothes to wrap dished and breakable items. This cuts the cost and hassle of buying newspaper or bubble wrap and works really well.
-
Label all of your boxes with the room that they belong in. It will save you a lot of time when unpacking!
-
Label, Label, Label boxes. Be as specific as possible. Also, on the day of the move, people need direction. Don't feel bad that you aren't moving boxes, or unpacking right away. When people are bringing boxes into the house, they need specific directions on where things go, otherwise they'll end up all over. Give people helping you move in a tour of the house so when you say "guest room" they know what you are talking about.
-
Purge as you go – less to pack and less to unpack.
Label as much as you can on all sides.
Be in a position inside new house(s) to direct those carrying in items so they go to correct room upon entering the house and don't need to be moved twice.
Assemble beds in rooms first. Then add large furniture before boxes.
-
Roll your shirts instead of folding them – saves so much room and you don't have to iron as much when you unpack! Good luck!
-
We are in the exact situation as you. We moved into a condo while our house is now being built. I also have 2 small children. My advice is not going to be on packing….its going to be on Packing for temp housing!!! Let the kids pick favorite toys..get them involved (you cant bring them all). Also pack only the necessities… like 8 plates/ glasses instead of all of them. Only pack the kitchen items you will need, (we all have kitchen gadgets serving trays we dont use). Pack 2 towels per person, instead of taking them all to the temp house etc. You get the picture…itll be that much easier moving out of your temp house if you dont have your whole house in it!! Good luck building make sure to post pics : )

My moving tip: Pay someone to pack, clean, and unpack!
@PrpattycakesPat
-
Spend the extra money and hire movers… makes things so much easier! OR… ask Sean to help you and I can guarantee you'll get at least 100 female volunteers!! 🙂

Pay someone to do everything !
@PrpattycakesPat
-
My advice would definitely be to hire movers! And have the move organized as much as possible so that moving is as stress-free as possible!
-
Take deep breaths and don't get too stressed.
Perhaps having papa and lovie entertain the kiddos on moving day might help, as well.
🙂 -
Hi Shay!
Love both of your blogs! We moved when my daughter was 18 months and then just did a kitchen renovation in October 2012, so had to pack the entire kitchen over again. Best suggestion is to pack things a like and label EVERYTHING!! I am huge with Excel Spreadsheets. Use that to keep track of what is in each box and how many you have. Hope that helps!
Would LOVE to use the Target Gift Cards for new accessories for my new kitchen! Thank you! 🙂
Mindy Tierney -
When packing dishes or more fragile items, put a beach towel or bathroom towel/rugs in the bottom of the box for extra support and protection.
-
My advice would be to use more of the small/medium sized boxes. Those large moving boxes get way too heavy otherwise. All I ever put in those are pillows!
-
When packing dishes or more fragile items, put a beach towel or bathroom towel/rugs in the bottom of the box for extra support and protection.
-
Label boxes! I prefer room by room so once you get to the house the moving guys can take the boxes to each room. Sell/donate anything you haven't used in 6 months. And most importantly pack a few boxes with the necessities that you can access easily, nothing worse than getting to your new home to need something all the way in the back of the moving truck— so put bathroom stuff, blankets, clothes for a a few days, games/snacks for the kids in a few boxes to last you for the first few days.
-
My tip is to put paper plates in between your regular plates when packing them. It protects them from breaking and when you unpack you can still use the paper plates. I feel for ya though! We sold our house in Sept and the 3 of us moved into a one bedroom apartment (with our stuff in storage) while we are building our house. The walls keep getting smaller and smaller!! Thank goodness we are down to the final month!
-
My advice would be to have a donate box next to the box you're packing at all times. If you haven't used the item in a year, donate it. I also make a list of what is in each box and tape it to the outside. Best of luck with the moves!
-
The best advice I have for you is to color code each room. That way when you are unpacking you will know where each box goes and you can get everything done quicker.
-Kimberly
-
Pack by each room. Have specific tubs/boxes for "living room," "kitchen," etc and have them each labeled. Makes it so much easier to put boxes in the new room!
-
Eww Moving is awful and a pain. Being someone that moves a lot my best tip to you would be don't overwhelm yourself with the whole house at once. Pack one room at a time. Don't stress yourself out with the whole house… baby steps. It also helps with the organization of the unpack.
-
My best advice is to get free boxes from work, and start saving newspaper. You will need alot of both. 🙂
Kristen
Kristen_bartek@yahoo.com -
I always wrapped my corning ware and breakable kitchen items in my kitchen dish towels.
-
When packing, clean as you go! I know you'll have to clean your old joint once all the big stuff is out, but it makes it a lot easier if you clean out whatever you pack up. I know you'll think "whoa! we are filthy people (you're totally not)" but it helps make it less overwhelming in the end. Happy packing!
-
My advice would be to hire movers. You will never regret that money spent and you won't be exhausted waiting at 3am for the boys to pull up with the second to last truck load! Meranda
-
My advice would be to only focus on one room at a time. Don't overwhelm yourself with the whole house. One room is a lot more manageable and makes the organization for unpacking a lot easier. Also, use BOXES! People that pack in bags almost always regret it. And same size boxes make for packing a moving truck almost fun.
-
Label two boxes each time you start in a room: keep, donate/garage sale. Sort and get rid of anything you don't want to find a new home for. Take a garbage bag in and try to really get rid of some stuff. Consider what you will use often and need in the rent house. Label those with red stickers and write rent house.
-
We moved into a rental property this year while building a house as well. Best tips include:
1. Have an OPEN FIRST box with each move, this includes the essentials such as toliet paper, papertowels, trash bags, toothbrush, etc. that you don't want to go digging for when you need!
2. If you are putting things in a storage unit, be sure that anything you put in is items that will not retain odor. we had a climate controlled storage unit with many of our things in it for 6 months and all blankets, clothing, etc had to be washed twice.
3. Declutter and organize BEORE you pack. Donate or get rid of old toys, clothes, etc that you know will not be used again- this way you don't move things you will end up getting rid of in a few months anyway!Sarah Henke
sarahjhenke@gmail.com -
Color code each room that you are packing up and then in the new house put a sheet of paper with the color of the room on each door so everyone helping knows the box with pink on it goes in the room with the pink on the door.
Start packing each room early, the stuff you can pack the earliest is also the stuff you can unpack last. So things you don't use a lot can be packed now and then unpacked last. The most important things are packed last and unpacked first.
-
As I packed I tried to not only color code the boxes according to room but I kept a notebook where I numbered each box and wrote a brief description of what was inside. My two kids are 15 months apart and it took awhile to unpack. This helped a ton when I really needed to find something that I hadn't unpacked yet. Good luck with the move!
-
Designate 1 day to pack each room, so packing is not too overwhelming….8 rooms=8 days. Also, getting rid of all of the "junk" this first move, will help when you move again into your new home.
-
My best advice is to use as many plastic storage containers as possible instead of cardboard or other types. You can always reuse the plastic boxes for storage later on but using them while moving helps reduce the chances of something happening to your things and its just easier in my opinion.
Taylor M.
-
Make sure you have a box with the things you will need the first night (toiletries, towels, pj's, etc). Have that box separate from the rest so you know exactly where it is.
-Becky W. -
Roll clothes! It keeps your clothes from getting wrinkled and makes each item of clothing easier to see since they're lined up. Also, keep your clothes that are on hangers on the hangers and move them that way! It saves so much time!
-
PURGE! My best tip is get rid of the stuff you no longer use NOW. Don't pack and move that stuff.
I'm excited about seeing the new house. How fun!!
Thanks for offering such a fun give away

Use whatcha got! Use towels to pack breakables – keep the silverware in the tray, etc. And ask all your friends/neighbors with infants for their diaper boxes!
-
"AshLee" from The Bachelor may be able to help since she is an "organizer". Perhaps she has a blog full of ideas. R

I wish I could move our kitchen outlets to underneath the cabinet, that way our back splash on the wall would not be interrupted by an electrical outlet plate!
Amanda
-
Instead of newspaper to wrap breakables in, contact your local newspaper and buy the ends of the rolls they don't use. Then you don't have to worry about the print getting on everything!
-
Roll your clothes instead of laying them flat! It keeps the wrinkles out and also helps you see what's there since it's lined up. Also, keep all of your clothes that are already on hangers on their hangers – it saves so much time when unpacking!
-
As someone who has moved to 7 states in 9 years courtesy of good ole State Farm, my best advice would be to start packing up the things that are not going to the rental house with you. I would assume that lots of your stuff is going in storage. I would pack up that stuff now and go ahead move that into storage. That way only the stuff you will need/use will go to the rental house. Nothing worse than having a whole room full of boxes that you won't be unpacking until you are in the permanent house. Good luck with the move. What an exciting adventure!
-
Hi Shay!
My best tip would be to fill your kitchen/rooms with COLOR on the walls! Bright, colorful colors can really make a difference. Also, getting colorful decorations&appliances to match the walls looks very sophisticated and cute. Happy Designing!

Label, label, label!! And use this opportunity to get rid of stuff. Good luck!

Have a packing party! Invite some girlfriends over for some food, wine, and packing. go room by room together and time will fly! Of course, there will be rooms that you want to do on your own, but toys, kids' rooms, etc. can be packed by anyone!!!
Enjoy building your dream home. We just built this fall and it was the best experience ever!
-
Put a paper or styrofoam plate between your dishes. Then you don't have to wrap them all with newspaper and it keeps them clean!

By best advice I can give just recently going through it. PACK everything. We had movers, but if everything had been in a box it would have gone much faster. ie: pictures, mirrors, pillows, lamps. Also, when labeling boxes make sure to label ALL sides. (Top and all sides) And designate which room. I was pregnant in my last move so I stood at the front door as the movers came in and if a box didn't have a label on it or room, I opened it right there and was able to tell the movers which room it needed to go to. Trust me, I was in no shape to move boxes!
-
My advice is to clean out every room and get rid of what you don't need and then start packing the things you don't use on a daily basis and be sure to label each box with the name of the room. Happy packing, how exciting!
-
Get boxes from grocery stores instead of buying them! Good luck 🙂
-
1. Purge
2. Organize
3. One room at a time, starting with the least used.
4. Call friends for backup and/or Starbucks 😉 -
Get boxes from grocery stores instead of buying them! Good luck!

Get movers! It's the best money spent! 🙂 As far as packing, good labeling will go a long way to make sure you can find everything when you get to your new home.
-
My packing tip would be to get rid of old stuff you dont use before packing it all up.
-
One tip that I used when we moved was to go to your local newspaper and ask for 'end rolls'. They are basically newsprint without the printing, it's the leftover. You can use it to pack up your dishes and breakable stuff. And it's usually free or super cheap, without turning your fingers black!
Good luck.
-
Pack up the small things first and also the things that don't get used often. Also, DON"T be afraid to ask for help and NEVER turn down help.
-
We've moved 4 times in 3 years so I feel your pain. My suggestion is to get detailed with your labels.
Make sure to say "kitchen utensils"
Also, take it slow! It's not a marathon. Enjoy some wine, pizza and good music.Best of luck
-
Transport your closet yourself… leave all the clothes on the hanger and hang them straight up when you get to your new house… Helps cut down on useless folding and extra boxes! Good Luck… moving is NEVER fun!
-
Declutter and organize before you move. Throw away, give to good will, give to friends all the things you don't want or need anymore. We've moved 5 times and this is the best advice I received. It's pointless to pack up a bunch of stuff you know you won't use or need at your new house!:)
-
I would def want a TV in my bathroom for nice relaxing bath and good TV watching.
Kitchen…hideaway garbage can.

Simple tip is to tag your furniture/boxes with what room they are going to in the rental/new house! Love your blog! Read and follow daily from Mississippi! -Sarah (sarahrchandler@gmail.com)

After moving back and forth from home to college MANY times in the past 4 years, my best packing tip is to use the space in your boxes and containers as wisely as possible!! Treat it like a puzzle and see how much you can fit in one box!
-Karen P. -
I moved last May and I found that it seemed easier and less overwhelming to unload all of the labeled boxes in the garage (or a spare room) and then bring them in one at a time and unpack them and put things where they belong. This way, I could easily do one room at a time and without having all of the boxes I hadn't unpacked yet in the way. Good luck with your move!

I have only moved twice in 35 years of marriage-the last almost 20 years ago. So I have no good hints, but I do love Target!!
-
Hi there! I just happened upon your blog from Pinterest Told Me To and I have to say…LOVE IT! 🙂 We just moved and I had to pack and am still working on unpacking… We have a 7 month old, so needless to say, it was/is a challenge. I would tell you to write everything on the box and note which room it belongs in. Then you won't have a room full of unpacked boxes in the basement waiting to be gone through like me…haha! 🙂 Good luck with the moves!
-
Label EVERY box with every detail of its components! It may seem obvious, but when moving gets hectic it is easy to just throw things wherever; when you are in dire need of that one thing that could be in 1 of 100 boxes you will be so glad you did!
-
Always pack by room and label, label, label! When we moved i always unpacked my kids room it helped make the different place feel a little more comfortable for them! Knowing they would still have there own comfy nook!
Good luck and God Bless!
Jessica Loftin -
Pack stuff that you wont need for a while in seperate boxes and dont unload those until you are in your new house. That way you don't have to move everything twice!

Use a different color/design duct tape on boxes for each room. 🙂

Get your kitchen setup first so you can still cook. Or even better have people bring you meals!

I would suggest hands-free gadgets for the kitchen faucet and and pull out cabinet for the kitchen trashcan!
-
Since you will be moving more than once, I would suggest packing all the 'out of season' clothes separate and putting them in storage. Less to keep in the rental!-Claire Hood
-
Deborah Rapose- Get lots of help from friends and family pizza and cold drinks help…. Also keep an organizing moving binder to keep track of where things are going so you know what is where if you need it
-
We moved a lot when my kids were little and to make them feel comfortable and excited about the move I let them put stickers on the moving boxes from their room. They loved it
-
Plan what holidays you will live in the rental house for and keep those decorations out! It will make living in the rental more like a home as you transition! 🙂
-
The U-HAUL store is your friend! U-HAUL makes the BEST boxes for moving! Yes, they do charge you for them, but they aren't THAT expensive and it's so worth it because the boxes are sturdy and come in a variety of sizes. Since you are moving twice, the boxes will hold up well and you'll be able to use them for both moves. U-HAUL also sells fantastic moving supplies like bubble wrap, plain newspaper, packing tape, "dish packing" foam, etc.
-
I would just say to label each box and pack them together. That way all the "Kitchen – Cupboard" boxes are together and the "Kitchen – Pantry" boxes are put in the right place from the very beginning. And when you label the boxes…label the tops and 3 of the 4 sides. It seems VERY time consuming..but so worth it! That way it can be seem easily and quickly. You dont have to worry about someone tipping your box of fridge food on its side to see whats in there.
Oh and Lots of Light Boxes are better the Less Heavy Boxes.
Good Luck! Happy Moving! -
My tip for you would be to call local grocery stores to find out what day their trucks come. Those days, they usually have alot of boxes and most of them have no problem saving them for you! If you are packing everything yourself, that is! 😉 Good luck! by they way…LOVE both of your blogs! I'm a new reader. –Abby McAlpine

We just built a house during the fall. During the build we put everything possible into a storage unit except for the essentials that we needed while staying at my husband's parents' house. A couple tips to share…
Take your time while packing if possible. Pack up a couple boxes each chance you get. Don't try to do it all at once otherwise you get frustrated and then just start throwing things in boxes just to get it done. As you pack (if you're a perfectionist like me) write on the box what's inside of it. (i.e. glass mixing bowls, glass glasses, etc) This helped me TERMENDOUSLY with being able to actually find what I needed instead of having to dig through each box.
Also, some how label every box according to what room it goes in.(writing it on the box, color coding by putting different color duct tape, etc) That way if you have family/friends helping with the moving in, they know where to put the box.
Finally, on move in day, YOU direct traffic! Let everyone else bring the items in, you just tell them which room is which. 🙂 Definitely helps cut down on confusion!Happy Packing/Moving!!
Kayli Burkhart -
Pack your sheets at the top of a box labeled "linens" so you can make your beds for your first night, and not searching endlessly through boxes at 1:30am. 🙂
-
Vacuum bags! They are great at making linens, coats, comforters, and pillows shrink to a more manageable size. Then label and pack each bag, that way you can reinflate as needed when unpacking. And always set your bedroom up first, that way one space (the most important space) is done!!! Happy Moving!!!
-
We just recently moved and I didn't label enough! I was constantly looking for stuff! So my advice would to obviously over label everything! 🙂
-
My best advice…hire movers! Haha. Even when I was in law school I hired people to move my stuff from my different apartments and it was the best money I have EVER spent!
-
My suggestion would be to purge all that you can beforehand. We didn't have time to do that before our last move so everything came with us.
-
Vacuum Bags!!! These things are amazing for linens, jackets, comforters, pillows, and bulky clothing items. They shrink the size so that these items are manageable!! Put like items in a back, suction out all the air, label and stack you are ready to go!!! We move multiple times a year and these bags are a lifesaver for us!!! Happy Moving
-
I would suggest purging all that you can before you move. We didn't have time to do that the last time we moved so it all came with us.
-
When packing dishes, buy some cheap styrofoam plates and put them inbetween the plates instead of wrapping each one.
Hope that is a good tip!!
Carrie Darney
-
My suggestion for packing is to wrap your plates in your towels. And wrap your glasses in handtowels – so on and so on. That way you pack 2 rooms at once!
Paula F. – North Carolina -
Organize, organize, organize! Number the boxes and then write down in a notebook what is in each box. ex-
Box 1- cleaning suppliesI hope everything goes smoothly for you and your family! 🙂

2 tips:
1. for hanging clothes, I lay out a big sheet, lay the hanging clothes on it, and wrap the sheet up…easier to carry out.2. put a styrofoam plate inbetween each plate instead of wrapping them individually

Organization is key in moving! Pack boxes meaningfully and label the boxes for their destination room and with a general list of the items inside…but most importantly, create "Open Me First" boxes. These boxes will likely be the last boxes that you pack in each room, as they are full of the items that you use most regularly. It will be really helpful when the unpacking feels overwhelming to know which boxes contain the necessities…like the bundt cake pans!
Happy Packing 🙂
Rebecca from Baltimore

Don't let your husband carry the box with the wine glasses in them…they will end up broke!! Just speaking from experience!!
-
I would say label everything neatly as you go. Take your time and space out the process of packing. Nothing worse than having to pack a family and a home within a few days. Don't stress and try and enjoy the process..

I have a couple of tips- In order to avoid being overwhelmed, pack a little every day. Also, in the kitchen, putting paper towels between dishes works great. Lastly, craigslist will have free boxes many times under the "Free Stuff" category.
-
I am not the best with planning ahead or being the most organized, so I suggest:
1. stock up now on free boxes (every time you go to the grocery store or liqeur store, ask for a few boxes)
2. assign yourself a room a day to pack. i suggest color coding the boxes – you can have your adorable kiddos help out with the color coding!
3. AS you pack, keep a box for GoodWill and a trash bag handy… perfect time to purge and pitch while packing!
4. pray for peace of mind and patience… this is usually my #1 🙂
Best of luck!
Bekah -
My packing tip for moving would be… If you have small boxes pack them in larger boxes. This will lessen the number of boxes you have. Don't forget to label contains of each box! Hope your move goes well! Love your blog!

We have moved several times in our young married life and the best thing we did was hire a company – they came and packed it for me in a day!!! I didn't have to do a thing!!!
But of course, I know that isn't practical for everyone (the church that my husband was pastoring paid for it). but I try to pack by room instead of my "type" – meaning instead of all frames in one box, I pack all that room in those boxes and label the room with the items in it. Helpful when trying to set up the new house!
Happy Packing!
Molly Spivey -
My best tip is wardrobe boxes. That way it's easy to move and you don't have to worry about all your hanging clothes getting wrinkled.
Abbie
-
Keep your clothes on the hangers!! I did this when I moved and had my closet set up in no time!
-
I numbered all of my boxes (as well as labeled them) and then I made an excel spreadsheet with the numbers and what was in the box. That way when I was looking for something specific I was able to find it. We did a temporary move too and it was a lifesaver to be able to find a specfic movie, vase, etc.
-
My tip would be if you, your husband, or kids haven't wore, seen or used something in over 6months then donate it to someone who could get use out of it. Not only are you making your move easier but your also helping someone else gain something they might not have been able to get before! Best of luck!

My best advice would be to use items you already have to wrap upnbreakables. I love using all my bath and kitchen towels to wrap up things like glasses, picture frames, etc.

I definitely think labeling is key. I would try to put away stuff that you don't use as frequently in boxes that won't even have to be opened at the rental house so you can keep it less cluttered.
Also, I recommend putting your very delicate necklaces that tangle easily inside of a straw and then clasp the necklace with the straw on it. It seriously saves on the nightmare of trying to untangle those if your jewelry box gets dumped upside down while moving 🙂
-
My tip is to get lots of friends/family to help! Even if you have movers, you can have your friends and family stay to help start unpacking. Then treat them with a homemade dinner and drinks in your new place!

My tip is if you, your husband, or kids haven't wore, used or seen something in over 6 months then donate it. Not only are you helping your move to be easier but knowing that you are giving it to someone who might not have been able to afford that before. Have fun packing/moving!
-
We just moved a month ago, so this is all still fresh in my mind! LABEL, LABEL, LABEL! I wrote a general idea of the items inside of the box as well as what room they went to, that way I knew which boxes I needed to unpack first. I also love the idea of color coordinating each room. Good luck with the moves!

First of all, congrats on the new home. Moving is exciting! My best advice would be to start NOW — however, based on what I read about you and your type A personality, you probably started way before now!! As you begin to pack, go room by room, and once each room is packed up, proceed to clean that room (unless you've hired someone to come in and clean the entire house for you once you're out). This way, everything in that room is complete and you don't have to go back. Also, have an organizational pattern and label the heck out of everything. Don't put K's toys in with S's things, etc. It might take more time now to be so precise, but it will save so much more time when you begin to unpack it all! Oh yeah — and if at all possible, get a sitter to watch the kids so you and your hubby and all your wonderful helpers can just get down to business without the cute little interruptions of the kiddos! 🙂
-
When I moved I went to grocery stores and others to see if they had any extra boxes they were going to through away…Petsmart had the best ones! They fold out where you don't have to use any tape on them (but of course you can to help secure them more) and the best part of them was they had inserts for handles, which made it a lot easier to carry. I would definitely recommend writing on the outside of each box what is inside or which room it goes in. It makes the moving process go much smoother! Best of luck to you guys with the move coming up!! I know you guys will have plenty of help from all your family & friends! 🙂
-

Whatever you don't get done before you move in will never get done! 😉 At least that is what I have found. Your house will be beautiful!!

my advise is to pack the moving truck with the kitchen stuff last, so you will be able to get to it first.

Best packing advise…..HIRE MOVERS!!!! 🙂
-
Get your kids to help you pack up the boxes. Give them little 'prizes' or priviledges for fastest packed box, or best packed. Or most stuff in it. Obviously give them things to pack that you're not concerned about being packed well, or breakable.

Label everything really well and pack all the like stuff together. We moved about 10 miles a few years ago and were able to settle everything in quickly because we had all of one room's items in these boxes, etc. Use laundry baskets and everything! 🙂

Put a st of sheets and towels for each bed and family member in your washer and dryer…that way you know where they are and aren't trying to open boxes when you want to go to bed! Plus a spare change of clothes!
-
Label everything really well so you know just where you put everything! Christina
-
You can go to a local supermarket and ask them to keep free boxes they won't use. Then a few days later they'll have them ready for you. Hope that helps! 🙂
– Katie Drake -
Best advice is to make sure you label everything! I've also used the color system and it works great!! Good luck!
-
It's kinda a duh but take anything of value with you…ie don't allow them to pack it for you. Let them know you are watching them. When we moved out of state, they asked to pack a camera…and then the camera didn't make it to the new location… The next time, I vocally let the packers know I was watching them.
Never leave your house unattended while they are packing.
I also second the COLOR tags! Makes it easy for everyone.
A moving binder is a great idea too http://www.abowlfulloflemons.net/2012/06/how-to-organize-your-move-2.htmlGood luck!
-
My best suggestion when packing is don't pack it if you haven't used it in a year or more. I can't tell you how many college books we recently moved, and why? Neither my husband nor I have been in college in over 14 years.
-
Don't wait until the last minute…as you pack take the time to clean out what you no longer use or want. Why move junk?!?! Label every box with what room it goes to…movers can put it in the room and makes unpacking easier!
-
Our house will officially be on the market next Tuesday (ahhhh!) and my biggest piece of advice is to have EVERYTHING you need to pack ahead of time. You don't just want to be throwing things in random boxes or bags because you're feeling desperate. That's how things get lost!
Good luck to you! 🙂
-
My best advice to help your kiddos adjust is to go the day before you move in and put one or two of their favorite items in their new room with a welcome sign on their door as a surprise to them. making it a new adventure is always fun. As for packing, wardrobe boxes are straight from the Lord above! They're worth the cost and they make life so much easier when you can just move everything on it's hanger and already organized for your new closet. Lowe's and Hoe Depot have better prices on them than buying them from Uhaul, etc… Best of luck!
-
If you haven't used it in the past few years, then you prob don't need it. Instead of packing it now, donate or trash it! You'll have that many less boxes to pack later! 🙂
-
How exciting for your family!! We just moved in May while I was 9 months pregnant with my second- yikes!! I'm not good at asking for help, but if anyone offers, take it!
We labeled each box with a number for the room, and put a map out on the day with the numbers for anyone helping unpack. Also, we unpacked the kids rooms and playroom first so our son felt at home quickly! Good Luck!
Can't wait to see pics of your new houses 😉 -
Growing up in a military family, we moved a lot! My best advice is to get rid of things you don't want before packing, so you don't have to deal with it in your new place! Stephanie
-
The best advice I was given was to use the move as a great opportunity to truly clean house! If you end up with even a little less to pack and move, consider it a success! Go through everything and be honest with yourself, if you havent't used it in your current house (aka the weird cutting board with a cheese slicer attached you received as a wedding 15 years ago…), then you certainly won't use it in your new house!
-
DON'T pack anything that you haven't been through and are sure you still want. When we moved I made the mistake of just wanting to get things packed and have it done, and said that I'd go through things when unpacking and throw them away/donate them then…but it really is best practice to just not even bring that junk into your new house in the first place, so its worth the extra time on the front end so you don't end up with boxes of stuff you don't want/need laying around for months and months after you move in!
-
We live in Alabama. In 2011 my husband was forced out of his home for a brief period of time due to tornado damage. One of the smartest things we did was pack in rubbermaid tubs that were clear on the bottom. We labeled the boxes with what room they came from but having the clear bottom made it MUCH easier when we were unloading. We could see the items in each box and helped us prioritize our unpacking. It also helped us know which boxes needed to go with us for the temporary time and which ones could go in permanent storage! We actually left some things packed in the basement even after we moved back in because they were"protected" in the tubs. After we unpacked, we kept a few of the tubs for storage and donated a few to a local shelter. Best of luck with the moves!!
-
My best tips are: Double tape every box bottom. Never overload a box. Even tho your hubby is strong, the boxes usually aren't. Wrap & double wrap the things that are most fragile & precious to you and usually pack & carry these things yourself. No one, not even family, seems to care for these items like you will. And NEVER label anything miscellaneous!! LOL
Good Luck! Praying for you!! XOXO -
I always pack up each room and label each box with a colored label specific to that room. I also list what is in the box. It makes it helpful to those who are helping you to know where to put the boxes and they don't have to bother you each time. I also like using paper boxes because they are sturdy and small enough to carry. Although big boxes hold more they tend to be more of a chore to carry.
-
Oh moving is soooo much fun, isn't it??
My best tip would have to be hire movers (I am sure you have this covered) and try to do as little physical work yourself as is humanly possible. (Yeah right!)
Also, if someone offers to watch the kiddos for the actual move, I would take them up on it. They will have much more fun with the grandparents (a little spoiling) and it will help to not have to worry about them getting trampled by the movers.
Good luck with your moves! I hope your new house exceeds all you are dreaming it will be!

Lots of cleaning out!!! Have some keep the kids. Keep their most important things out and lots of reassuring them!
-
I moved FOUR times the year I graduated college! I understand how stressful it is. My best advice is to be honest with yourself about what you need keep vs. what to give away. I go through my closet several times a year to avoid holding on to unnecessary things!
-
Katie here, when you start packing up your kitchen, bubble wrap is not necessary. If you are like me you have accumulated your fair share of walmart and kroger plastic bags, these will do fine to cushion some of your glassware. Happy packing!

My best moving tip? Get lots of yummy snacks all around you…pizza…yummo drinks…to keep the energy and body happy! 🙂

Hi Shay, love your blog! My husband & I just finished building our dream home last summer, so I have some experience in packing & moving. My tip is buy new furniture! I know it sounds crazy but when you have your brand new dream home you want new pretty things to go with it. For everything else began packing early. Any off season clothing pack up in clear totes & move these things first.
Good luck!Andrea Boggs (Kentucky)

When packing items that are fragile I recommend using the containers you use at Christmas time to pack up ornaments. Hopefully they are still available through organization stores such as the Container store. This will save a lot of time you would normally spend wrapping each individual item. Hope this helps!
-
When we move, I always try to start as soon as possible. I start in the rooms we use least and pack the items we use least. Label the boxes by room and number in order of them being packed (least used stuff in box #1, etc).
When the truck is being loaded, the box that was packed first(least used stuff) should be loaded last (so it's unloaded first). This way the least used stuff (box #1) is buried behind the most used stuff and you don't have to create a giant mess to find the stuff you use every day.
It sounds like a lot of work, but it really helps when you're unpacking! -
I start packing way in advance so that if I do a box or two a day, there isn't so much the week of the move. Also, I stick to paper plates and bowls for all meals so there is one less thing to do!

My best advice to you is to label your boxes with the important items in your box. Then label the boxes for the designated rooms they will be going into. When your moving, put all boxes in the garage. Then when your ready to unpack, take a labeled box from the garage and move it to the room in which it goes and unpack. It doesn't seem like such a huge task if your aren't looking at a ton of boxes to unpack.
-
I would agree with the comments that mention gathering/donating the things you no longer use. I've done this in my last two moves and have found that I'm much more aware of what I buy because of it. I donated tons of clothes and other household things I never used, but bought because they were a great deal, and now only buy things I love and will wear often.
Organization is also key – label, label, label!
I hope to move goes well and the weather participates! (I've moved in the rain twice, so pethaps I should also mention checking the forecast?)
Thank you for the awesome giveaway! Fingers crossed 🙂
-
Use moving as a chance to get rid of all the things you never use! Less to pack and less to unpack!
-
My advice would be to give yourself enough time so that as you pack, you can really decide what you use and what you don't. You can donate what you don't use/need anymore. That way you don't waste your time packing, moving and then unpacking stuff that you don't use or need.
-
Bring as many people as you can to help!

Collect boxes like yesterday. Color code your boxes… Easier for moving in. and finsih packing one room before you move to the next! Dont stress yourself out, have help! And pray for sanity!
-
Rushing and packing at the last minute is the worst, so I would say to go room by room and start packing up the stuff that you can live without for now. And like everyone else said, make sure you list everything that's in the box on the outside of the box!
Also, I would color code each room and then put that color of tape or marker on the corresponding box. So your living room could be purple, your bedroom blue…etc. This would help sorting on moving day go smoother 🙂

My advice would be to check the forecast! Whether moving yourself or with movers, you don't want to move in the rain, trust me! 🙂
I would also agree with the people that mention gathering/donating things as you pack. I did this in my last two moves and can honestly say it felt good to de-clutter and I felt more more organized in my new homes.
The last thing would be your labeling. I like the color code mentioned earlier, or really specific labeling worls well too (I.e. – linen closet, kitchen – pans, bakeware, etc.)
Early planning is the first step, so you're already ahead of the game! 🙂
Thanks for the awesome giveaway, my fingers are crossed!

When you start packing up your kitchen, bubble wrap is not necessary. If you are like me you have accumulated your fair share of walmart and kroger plastic bags, these will do fine to cushion some of your glassware. Happy packing!
-
We moved almost two years ago. Clean out as you pack!! Take one room at a time and have a "donate" box for things that you no longer need. Good labeling is another thing! Know what is in those boxes. Since you are moving into a rental home for the time being, take as little as possible and get a storage unit to hold the rest. Good luck!

We found those boxes that come with a metal hanging bar to hang clothes were extremely helpful. You don't have to take the time to take clothes off the hangers, fold and pack, just to do the reverse when you unpack. Worth the money!
Good luck with the multiple moves!
-
Put styrofoam plates in between your regular plates and pack a few at a time rather than packin one by one.

My advice would be to keep a separate bag or suitcase of just bed linens & kid pajamas (and some for you too!) and anything else you may want that first night/morning (toothbrushes, towels, etc). Keep it with you…not the moving van. That way, you can make beds and kids can feel comfortable that first night with out you being overwhelmed with finding the right box.
Good luck!!
-
My best advice is to have LOTS of (reliable) HELP!!!! 🙂
And, to organize/pack boxes according to specific rooms/areas. Obviously, you'll have all that you'll NEED for the rental labeled and the stuff that can "wait" until the new house is ready – can just be packed separately!!
Oh, and coffee will be your FRIEND!!! 😉

Sorry if I am adding another comment. It looked like my first one didn't go through! Anyway, love your blog so much! As a recent college grad and young professional, I have moved quite a bit over the last five or so years. Collecting boxes overtime was the biggest thing that helped me. If I ever see a big box I grab it while I can so I'm not going crazy looking for them when I'm packing. I'm also overly organized so I label everything and put specific rooms in specific piles! I also try not to spend a lot of money on packing supplies – use towels and old grocery bags for cushioning for fragile objects!
The biggest piece of advice I have is if you can, find movers to help. We found ours on Craigslist and they seriously helped tremendously! Best of luck!~madison
-
I didn't read through all the comments but I'm sure someone already mentioned it – I think the best thing to do is get rid of all the clutter you haven't used or don't plan on using. Moving is no fun!
-
START EARLY!! Do a little bit every day and keep it all organized!! Much more Efficient! Label all per room "Bedroom", "Ms. K's room", ect.. Happy Packing! xx
-
I feel like I've moved 200+ times, but each time I always pack stuff i'm planning to get rid of. SO what I've learned is throw stuff away/donate to goodwill or charity FIRST, and then pack/move the rest.
GOOD LUCK! 🙂
-
Start planning ahead now and get rid of anything you don't use/need! Also, plastic tubs make moving so much easier, they are all the same size, easy to carry and stack really nicely!
-
We just moved last year! Go through your house first and throw away/donate things that aren't used regularly. No sense packing and moving things unnecessarily! Also I am a huge fan of list making and labeling! Best of luck for a smooth move!
-
EW! I did that last year so I feel your pain. I packed all non-essentials first and never unpacked them in the rental. I had different color boxes for essentials (to unpack each time). This really helps with the second move!
-
Use a moving company for the big stuff! I always say it saved my marriage!
-
Leave all items you can (sweaters, small items, clothing in your dresser drawers. Tie down or strap them to your dresser so they don't come open or you can move these separately yourself. This made life so much easier and we did not have to pack these items into separate boxes. Label everything and make your movers place each box in the correct room you want them in when arriving at your new home. Try to keep everything together in your boxes according to each room. Wrapping breakables with washclothes and towels adds much more protection for your breakables and glasses, china, etc than paper towels. Good luck!

Color coordinate!!!
Designate a color for each room in the new home, such as yellow for kitchen, orange for dining room, etc. Apply colored stickers on the box near the box number. In your new home. Put a matching sticker on the door to each room. The movers will know where to put everything when they arrive at the destination. It's also helpful to post a big sign on the wall in the room where you want boxes stacked, ("Boxes here please") to keep them out of furniture and traffic areas!!Also have the Kids helps as much as they can! Having them pack up their rooms, and play areas (simple things) will save you lots of time!
GOOD LUCK!!!:)
XO,
Amelia Vignali -
Tricia C – my comment is to use styrafoam plates to stack between plates instead of wrapping them, also label – the more detailed the easier your life will be in the new house…..congrats and good luck!!!

my tip is use styrafoam plates to stack in between instead of wrapping, also labeling is a huge help, the more details the easier your life will be when unpacking! Congrats and good luck —–

Label and more label!!! Get a mover – youll be glad you did! And since you are moving into a rental first – put what you don't need in the rental in storage for when you move to your new house. It will save time packing and unpacking and packing it again.
-
I would suggest going through your things and really figuring out what you use and want to take with you!
We moved four years ago and some of our things are still in boxes! We could have saved some time and money by not moving those things that we obviously are not using!
I hope your moves go smoothly!

Shay, Thank you for sharing your life with us. What a fun ride.
My advice for packing, isn't necessarily how to pack but what to pack. As you're going through items in your house ask yourself this:
-Do I love you?
-Do I need you?
-Do I use you?If you can't answer "yes" to any of these questions, it's not worth packing and unpacking!
(I can't take credit for this advice, it came from Kelly over at flylady.com)
We are a former military family and have moved a good bit… this advice really helps with decluttering… even when you're not moving!
Enjoy the journey!

I have moved 3 times in the last 3 years because of my husband's job. The thing that probably helped me the most was having friends or family take the kids for a day or two. It was so much easier to pack when I didn't have someone else unpacking.
-
I find packing well is the most important thing in order to make it easier with the unpacking. That being said, when moving to the new place, settle the boxes according to the room they belong to instead of just setting them down anywhere and then getting to it. I also like to unpack one room at a time and organize as I go. 🙂

My advice-let the professionals do it!!!! : ) my husbands company moved us from Detroit to southern ohio, we'll never do it any other way!!! Also, if you're doing it yourselves, pack up everything on the walls first (as you need them the least) and days/weeks before live off paper products so you can have your kitchen dishes and glassware packed away!! Good luck!!! Sounds exciting!!!

Let the professionals do it!! : ) my husband's company moved us from MI to southern ohio and ill never move another way again!!! But if that's not an option, pack up all the wall stuff first as you need that stuff the least! And days/weeks before live off paper products so you can pack up your kitchen before the day of!!! Good luck, sounds exciting!!!

My advice is to start early by packing up things that you don't need/use very often. If you do a little packing each week, it doesn't feel as overwhelming when you REALLY have to get everything packed. And label, label, label!
-
Liquor store or copier paper boxes are great. They are generally heavier boxes with handles on the sides for easier carrying.
-
Pack up things that you don't use often first. Keep the necessities until the very end. Also, when you are unpacking, you can decide whether you even need those first-packed things anymore. I found that many things I thought I needed were totally forgotten by the time we moved and started to unpack. It helps with the clutter to get rid of some of this "stuff."
Good luck with the move!
Amy Beward -
I never knew about the boxes you can get that have a rod in it so that you hang your clothes instead of folding everything. My friend gave us some with our last move and I was amazed at how much fit into them! They were amazing!:)
-
Use printer paper boxes to pack in, they don't hold too much so they don't get too heavy AND they typically have handles!
-
1. Label your boxes. (Obviously)
2. Use your time packing to do some major spring cleaning. The easiest way to pack is to reduce what you are packing. Sometimes you don't realize how much you have until you are looking at each and every item you own one-by-one. Donate all you can.
-
I hadn't heard of those boxes with a rod inside of them so that you can hang your clothes instead of folding them all until our last move. My friend gave us some and I was in heaven! It kept our clothes so nice and I was amazed at how many it fit! It also made the unpacking so so much easier because they were already hung. I definitely saved those boxes! They were a life saver!:)
(I posted once but don't see my post so sorry if this showed up twice)
-
Starbucks Coffee boxes are great and easy to carry. Just ask the store when their delivery day is and have them save the boxes for you.

Start throwing things out/donating what you don't "need" . Seriously, it is AMAZING how much stuff you accumulate, especially with kiddos! You can pack things now that you don't need to 'use' for the next few weeks: decor, extra kitchen appliances (like my juicer that never gets used :)) etc…And make sure to label EVERYTHING! GL!
-
LaRae: label each box for the room it goes in and a small list of contents! Then you'll know which need to be unpacked right away (underwear) and which can wait a bit (beach towels)! Also, wrap items in towels and other linens so you aren't wasting money on packing supplies and also packing things that will already be going with you!
As far as the movers knowing where a box like 'smith's room' is– make a key for them and tape it right next to the front door as they walk in– do this even if you have friends helping you move! Then you don't have to repeat yourself 🙂
-
I'm the best packer in the family. The best tip I have is to pack one room at a time, label each box with the designated room and the basics of what is in the box (ex: Kitchen: Dishes, Kitchen: Dry Goods, etc). I suggest leaving the Kitchen for last since that is probably the stuff you use most. Also, as you are packing it will be a good opportunity to donate or throw out items you don't want or need anymore, therefore you won't be taking that stuff into your new space…kind of like a fresh start.
-
Start now! Also, try to go ahead and get rid of items and clothes now so that you don't have to move them twice! I did this with clothes (took them to a consignment shop) and other household items I donated. You will feel so much better about not taking things with you that you didn't need!
-
something that has always helped me was getting rid of as much stuff as possible before the move! if I hadn't used something in 6 months, it got donated. It helps to have less things to move and also less to unpack!
-
Put paper/styrofoam plates between your china when packing rather than having to wrap each plate.
-
My tip is to label every single box and write down everything in the box on the outside of the box so you will not have to look through every single box to find that one item you need.
-
When we moved into our house 5 years ago, I told my husband I wouldn't move again (after 7 moves in 6 years) until we could pay someone else to move AND to pack us. So my advice is to shell out the dough and make other people do as much of the work as possible. 🙂
-
Use colored shipping tape to seal boxes to designate rooms and also upstairs vs downstairs if you are moving into a two story house. This same tape can also be placed on pieces of furniture to easily designate what furniture goes in each room. They also sell cute patterns to make the move a little more fun! Rebecca C.
-
Label every single box and write a list of what is in the box on the outside so you don't have to look through every single box to find the one item you need.
-
Hmmm, there are few things in life I hate more than moving, but I do love starting a new chapter! Label your boxes and keep in mind that small things can be heavy, so just because it all fits doesn't mean it will be easy to move 🙂
-
Donate everything you haven't used in the last year. It will save major time packing and unpacking. Good Luck!
-
We packed everything in plastic totes! Easy for moving and reusing:)
-
Of course I'd love to win! I don't have a ton of moving experience but my best tip is to go to the ABC/liquor store for boxes because they always have a ton and are willing to give them away!
Thanks for the giveaway!
-
Stack your plates with paper plates between them instead of wrapping them.
-
I hated moving my clothes every semester at K-State! My roommate taught me to take a coat or jacket, still on the hanger, and put my hanging clothes inside the jacket, and then button or zip the jacket around them. It keeps them from sliding all over the place and from falling off the hangers, and makes for several less trips!
-
Don't be afraid to ask for help when moving, but make sure you are ready to go when people arrive! Have stuff boxed up and labeled so they can be efficient and things go quickly. Then when you move again into your new house, they won't mind helping again.
-
Love your blogs! All of them;)
My bet suggestion for moving is to label each box with the room that they need to go into and place them in the room they belong right as you unload them from the moving truck. It really saves you time and avoids those " where is this box" moments. Hope this helps
NYRLA Orlando , Fl -
My recommendation is only take the necessity's to the rental. Put everything else into storage. Label, label, label, and take a ton of pictures. Good luck! Hilary
kevinhilaryzacharywill.blogspot.com -
I would use different colors/patterns of duct tape for the boxes so you know which room they belong to and it's easy for moving helpers to follow!
-
We have been in the same boat and are currently in a tiny rental while we wait on the right house to buy. My advice…
– Purge/Giveaway/Clean/Organize first!
– Print out the awesome spreadsheet from this girl and pack accordingly, being super detailed as you label the contents of each box on the spreadsheet (http://shannonbrown.typepad.com/life_in_general/2012/05/how-to-move-1000-miles.html)
– If you're putting things in storage while in your rental, go ahead and make those storage boxes their own separate pages on that spreadsheet. If I didn't think I'd really need it in the next year, I put it in storage. It has been refreshing to live simply this year, and if I really need/miss/want something I just have to look up the box number on my spreadsheet and hubs can go get it from storage! -
Use printer paper boxes, they don't hold too much so they aren't too heavy AND they usually have handles!
-
Best packing tip….get rid of anything that you haven't used within the year!! Clothing, sheets, pots, pans, jewelry…anything!!!! Good luck!
-
I'd suggest finding creative ways to get your kids involved in the moving process. I'm sure they'd LOVE to help. (and then pray for patience) 🙂
-
My name is Lauren Ball. (I left a comment earlier, but don't see it and don't know if it went through.)
My advice would be to get free boxes from lowes, home depot, etc. They usually give away their refrigerator, washer/dryer, etc. boxes to people who ask! They are so nice to pack in because they are nice and big! -
My suggestion is: label, label, label. The last time we moved I was meticulous in my labeling of boxes (by room, as well as what was in each box) and the moving and unpacking was so much easier.
-
Cook some of your fabulous food and invite your friends over for a "party" and then SURPRISE!! It's actually a packing and moving party and they all get to help!!! But really, you could still feed them the food! 🙂
-
Even though moving is one of my least favorite things, I love that it is an opportunity to evaluate what you really need and don't need. We've moved 6 times in the last 5 years and I've donated so much to the Goodwill each time, eliminating any possible clutter! Donate, donate, donate! 🙂
-
Label, label, label! Don't just put living room on a box — write as much detail as you can. Last time we moved, I made sure that my son's room was set-up first. The rest of the house was a mess, but at least he was "home" in his room. I love organizing and cleaning … I always look forward to helping my friends move!
-
We are a military family….so we've got lots of experience moving!! Try to declutter as much as possible now and when the packing starts make sure every box is labeled very well!!! Also start separating items that you don't want the movers to touch into one area….and then make sure that area is off limits to the movers on moving day. Good Luck!
Carissa -
We did the same thing! My tip is to get a Get a SAM (or a pod). Put all non-essential items in there. They pick it up at your current house and then deliver it to the new house when you are ready. That way you don't have a ton to unpack and repack at the rental.
-
The best tip that someone told me is that when you pack your kids clothes put them by outfits in gallon ziplock bags. It makes it really easy to pick out outfits the first couple of days while you get unpacked in your new place…so much so that each child can go look at the bags and pick what they want and there aren't missing socks or items out of place.
Blessings!
Mimi
http://www.mimielmer.blogspot.com -
Get the moving-seran-wrap stuff! Wrap it around EVERYTHING (pictures, furniture, odd and ends). Keeps everything protected, clean, and together.
-
I would number all of your boxes and then either make a spreadsheet or write down in a notebook, everything you put in that box (or at least write down the theme).
When we moved, we did not do this and then realized that we are missing some things but don't have any type of reference to look off of to get reimbursed from the moving company. Good luck!Nicole K
-
Label, label, label!!! Make sure each box has what room/what's in it written somewhere on it. Just in case you need something that's not unpacked yet! 🙂
Krystal Dubas -
Color code each box and then make a master list or two to hang at each entry to the house and then hang a color by each room! That way you aren't constantly having to be director and can be unpacking while they are!
-
I hate packing too, but one of my fav packing tips is to use all my towels to wrap anything breakable. Beats washing black newsprint off dishes and you get 2 things packed at once!!!!
-
Donate & get rid of a ton of stuff so you can start with a simpler, cleaner home. A very wise person once told me that when you are unpacking in your new place, the first thing you should do is set up an area to rest before anything else – ie: your bed! put sheets on it, etc. Otherwise you'll start with the kitchen.. get carried away.. next thing you know it's midnight & you have no bed to sleep on!
-
Have a packing party! Provide food and wine and have friends over to help you pack. Best thing I ever did!! We got our entire kitchen packed up in one night.
-

-
Consolidate. Get rid of things you don't need before packing them. Instead of packing them and then getting rid of them after you unpack because you realize you don't truly need it.
-
A year and a half ago I moved from my home to my fiance's home and most of my stuff went into storage until we bought our home we live in now.
Advice – label boxes based on the rooms you want them in. Kitchen, bathroom, hall closet, etc.
Also, label boxes that are Fragile, that way everyone knows they are Fragile.
One more thing…when boxing up clothes, bedding, towels, if you are not going to unbox them till you move to your new home, but a couple of dryer sheets in with them. It will keep them smelling fresh.
Good Luck on your move.
-
Avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same box. It will make your packing quicker and your unpacking a lot easier, too. And don't forget to label each box with the room it's destined for along with a description with its contents. Being organized makes moving a little less chaotic!
Good luck – love your blog!
-
LABEL, LABEL, LABEL 🙂 Or just hire movers because they truly have it down to an art!!
Lacie Duffel
-
Good luck with your move! I recently moved into my fiance's house and until we could find a place that was ours I put alot of stuff in storage.
Here is some advice:
1. Label boxes for which room they go in. Makes it easy for those moving you into your new home.
2. Label which boxes are fragile and need extra special care. Also keep those seperate from all the other boxes.
3. If you are packing away sheets, blankets, towels, clothes and leaving them packed until you move into your new home, add a dryer sheet or two to the box. Helps keep them smelling fresh.
Good luck and best wishes!

Tote, totes and more totes! All matching of course so they can stack on top of each other. Easy to carry and fits great in moving trucks and back of cars! We moved a few months ago and bought a bunch of totes from Menards/Home Depot and they worked great! Make sure to label them and buy them clear so you can see through them. They kept me sane while moving:-) Happy Moving!
-
We hoarded as many paper boxes as we could, and they are such sturdy lifesavers!
-
Many have already said this, but label all of the boxes. It's so worth the time. Good luck!
-
Wrap your breakable stuff in your towels, washcloths, etc. Then you don't have to waste money on bubble wrap or newspaper, and you don't have to use extra boxes for your linens.
-
We moved a couple of months ago (lived in our previous house 3 years), and as a general rule if we had not touched/used an item in 3 years it was time to part with it.
-
I would label all of your boxes, ( Let the kids help!) Make it fun for them! And also hire movers! It is worth it! 🙂
-
As alot of people have already mentioned, this is the time to get rid of stuff! If you havent used it in over a year, get rid of it.

Hello! My best tip is to use index cards. As you pack a box, list the contents of the box on the index card and tape it to the side of the box. I say the side b/c as the boxes are stacked up inside the moving truck or in a storage facility, you will want to be able to see the index card. I am a bit type A so I created two cards and placed them on each side. This works a lot better then just writing "Kitchen" or "Bathroom" because now you know exactly what is in the box! Hope you have a stress-less move!
-
As annoying as packing probably is, I think it would be a great time to get rid of clutter or stuff you haven't used in awhile! From Whitney Bandermann
-
The more bubble wrap the better!!!!! We bubbled wrapped everything when we moved and nothing was broken in the process. Good luck!
Abby Lea -
My tip is simply to label, label, label… everything. It makes it so much easier when you begin unpacking to know which boxes belong in which rooms. This has saved me so much time every move I have had to make.
-
Enough Plugs in the kitchen and be sure to tell the builder exactly what you want so you wont regret anything! Enjoy!
-
Label everything. Pack one room at a time. Have someone watch the kids the day of the move. Start packing now. Good luck. I hate moving but fun adventures ahead with a new house. Heather Miller
-
Best advice….anything is easier to move, load, carry if it is in a box. also, pack a little every day (i am sure you are already doing that because you are super organized). have fun building…it is a lot of fun.
deborah p. -
Sometimes moving across town is harder!
Let your kids each pack one box close to the move day of the toys they want to play with first in the new place. Carry these over in your car and let them unpack them in their new rooms. It keeps them occupied for a little while and i think it helps them "get it" a little better.
Also, you can contact Grant Byrd at our church to hire some cheap, but quality teenage muscle if you are doing any of it yourself. (My son would love to help–a little cash and pizza is all it takes:))
And definitely get everyone you know to pray about the closing dates, utility hookups/disconnects, etc. Every time we moved I would think we were all set and something would change and cause major mom stress!
I love reading your blog!!

Best advice I can give is to invest in some colored duct tape. Once you fill the boxes from each separate room in your home, color coordinate them to that room and use a different color duct tape to secure each box. That way your movers already know pink taped boxes go to the pink (kensington) room.
Also, no need to invest in wardrobe boxes when moving clothes, just keep them on their hangers, cover in trash bags and secure them with rubber bands and they should move quite easily!
Moving is never fun, so good luck!

If you don't want to spend money on wardrobe boxes but want to keep you closet organized during the move them here is the trick for you. Measure across your back seat from hanger hook to hanger hook. Get a broom stick and saw off the extra. Place the stick on each hanger hook and now you have a hanging rod for your closet! My dad taught me this one! I follow your blog so I'm sure you probably have your closet organized by color! Don't want
To mess that up! Also pack the kitchen last, specifically the pots!!' -
Hey I know I am one of tons, and never win anything, but I have moved 16 times in the last 7 years and would definitely recommend just focus on 1-2 boxes per day. I am a stay at home mom of 3 ages 3 and under and I know how life is just insane, especially when you are so amazing at keeping up with your blogs and such. So might not be the most amazing advice to get, but its just reality:-)
-
My tip is to make a list! I love making lists so I don't get paranoid of forgetting something at the last minute! Good luck moving!!
Pooja Patel
-
My best tip would be to go through all of your belongings as you pack and get rid of it them/donate them. I've made the mistake so many times of packing unwanted things/clothes and it was so much more unnecessary work!
Laura C.
-
– start going through rooms and getting things you don't need, have a garage sale or take to a resale place
– organize as much as you can while you pack
– think about your new spaces and closets and decide where everything will go
– label boxes that don't need to be unpacked at the temporary houseGood luck! So excited for you!

Stay calm and remember it's a season.

Okay……..this isn't a packing tip, but something I wish we'd done when we moved out of our first house (the house we brought our first child home to). Video every room in your house for your kids complete with stories you can think of about them in those rooms. They won't appreciate it now, but I think they'd love seeing their first house when they are older and can't remember living there. We have plenty of pictures of rooms, but no video. I'll definitely video our current house for my girls when we move again:) Good luck!!
-
Pack paper plates I'm between your "real" plates! It helps protect them!
-
My best advice is to take this time to do as much purging as you can! If you haven't used it/worn it/etc in at least a year, give it away or donate it! There's no use in packing up and moving things that you don't need! 🙂 Good luck!
-
Purge!!!

My favorite tip that I've received on moving is to use Styrofoam plates in between your plates when you pack them. Saves lots of time because you won't have to wrap each plate in newspaper. And, you can re-use the Styrofoam plates if the need arises! And of course, label everything! When we moved, I labeled each box with what the contents of it were and what room of the house it needed to be put in. Happy moving!
-
I have moved around a lot and one of the best tips i have is to pack all of your clothes on hangers inside suitcases so once you get to your new house all you have to do is hang them right up..it saves a lot of time!
-
My best advice for moving – use different colored duck tape or packing tape for each room that you box up and make a sign at the new house with a piece of the tape that you want those boxes to go into at the new house. Quick and easy up front so you don't have a headache finding and uppacking later!!

Use different colored duck or masking tape when packing up boxes for each room of your house. At your new house, make a sheet of paper with a piece of the tape used for the room you want those boxes moved to. This is super easy on the front end and makes unpacking less of a headache since everything should be in the room you want it to be in. Good luck!!

I have never tried this, but recently saw a tip to pack plates by putting a styrofoam plate in between rather than wrapping them up individually…seems like a good idea (and would save a lot of time)! Good luck with the moves!!
-
As a recent college grad, I've moved lots in the last couple of years. A few of my favorite tips are.. 1. Throw out/give away everything you haven't used (clothes, junk, etc…). 2. Organize everything ahead of time so it's not mass chaos (your tooth brush shouldn't be with your socks haha!) – color code/label/whatever you have to do to make it easy once you get to your new home. 3. Wrap things in towels and old grocery bags. No need to waste money on bubble wrap or packaging supplies.
4. This goes without saying, but help is the best… we found our movers on Craigslist. They were INCREDIBLE!Love your blog! Best of luck with the moving transition!

My best moving tip would be to label not just the tops of the boxes but all of the sides as well because you never know where a box will get left and if only the top is labeled you may not know what's inside the box!
-
My advice is use tubs instead of boxes! I've moved a lot in the past few years and had a situation like yours where I moved into a rental waiting on the move to a new house. Tubs help so much! You won't unpack all your things in the rental house, so it'll sit in storage somewhere. Boxes get wet and ruin what's inside. Tubs keep things fresh and safe! Color code tubs for different rooms. It does add a bigger cost into the picture, but you will always use tubs. Organizing the new garage, storing kids clothes, toys, or moving another friend/family member. Who knows, you could even save them and use them for when your own children have to go to college. 🙂
-
Take a picture of complicated wiring of cords so you know how to plug them back in once settles in your new house. Label a couple of boxes from each room as "open first" and fill with items you will need right away.
-
Label the outside of your boxes with the room it goes in…..makes unpacking so much easier
-
my tip is to LABEL LABEL LABEL the boxes. with whats in the box and what room the box goes to. Also, try not to throw random things in boxes, try to have a theme for each box!

Hire movers to pack and move your things. We are moving in two weeks to a rental house while we are building a house so we are in the same boat. Good luck!
-
I've moved 14 times, and I'm only 34!!!
1. Have a garage sale prior to moving into your rental. Sell those items you know won't fit or go with your new home decor.
2. Use the proceeds to buy boxes (Home Depot is the cheapest!) and super industrial garbage bags.
3. Use the garbage bags to pack items you'll unpack right away (clothes, toys, shoes) and you'll save so much money on boxes!
Have a safe and fun move!
Andrea -
Leave folded clothing in the drawers. Remove the drawers and move to the new house. Then you just have the frame of the dresser to move and slide those clothes in drawers right back in there! Cover with a garbage bag if you're worried about them getting icky on the way.

Hire a moving company 🙂

LAbel each box with the room they will go in.. Makes it so much easier than having to direct people when they tell you what is in the box:)

Hi Shay,
I love your blogs and your family is so awesome! I am so glad I get to see Sean every Monday night again.
I am moving in about a month, and I am going to start purging things soon. I have gotten a ton of ideas from reading here today. I have also done the color coding thing and it works! I also always get food (usually pizza) and drinks for my moving crews. I find if you treat them like family, they will do a great job for you!

Hi Shay,
I'm definitely commenting on both blogs- you can't ever have enough Target gift cards 🙂 My suggestion is to go to grocery stores & ask for egg boxes. The boxes are a great size and they tend to be really durable because they carry such fragile food. You can get these for free, and they work great. I got most of mine from Martin's Supermarkets but if you don't have any in your area, I'm sure you could get them at any other grocery store as well!

Buy a double oven and a convection oven! Also utilize pinterest for ideas!! Much quicker and more efficient than searching the internet or magazines.
-
My packing tip is to organize your packing so that there is stuff you will need and want to unpack at your rental and then stuff you may not necessarily need until your other house is done being built!! Good luck!
-
As a Navy wife who has moved 4 times, I would say to start about 2 months prior to the move and get rid of things that you haven't worn or used in 9 months-1 year. Put everything in a designated donate pile and call your local thrift store/women's shelter to come pick it up for you. Anything not able to be donated, trash it. Go through all drawers and toss miscellaneous items that you don't need, want or use because movers just dump the whole drawer into paper and ball it up, placing it into a box.
Make Smith's room blue, Kensington's room pink, kitchen is yellow, living room green, bathrooms brown/black/grey, master is RED, guest bedroom pink, dining room orange. Buy sharpies (the assorted colors) and ask the movers to label the boxes appropriately. They usually go from room to room so it shouldn't be too hard to give them the appropriate color. On move IN day, use a sheet of construction paper in each to show the movers where to place it. If there are stairs, put the colors on the stairs to show them that those belong upstairs.
Put something down to cover the carpet for heavily traveled areas. Whether it's an old towel or sheet, a plastic runner, trust me – you'll be glad you used it because movers will NOT remove their shoes everytime they come inside the house.
It is expected that you will buy the movers and packers lunch. It's best to buy pizza and drinks to have delivered. Keep some paper plates on hand. You are also expected to tip them as well.
Anything breakable or anything you cherish, move on your own. Anything valuable, don't let the movers touch. You move it.
Be nice to the movers. They are packing your stuff up and moving it. They can be as rough with it as they like or as gentle as they like. Give them every reason to be gentle with your stuff. 🙂
That's all I have for now. I've never built a house (thank you Navy!) but I look forward to the day that I can.
HUGS!
-
I would recommend pacing yourself. It will probably take you longer than you would anticipate to pack up your whole house. So pace yourself by packing things you don't need in your day to day life early on and then continuing through more important daily items as the move date gets closer.
Good luck!! 🙂

I moved for the first time ever 6 months ago! Before that, I lived in my parents' house after they moved! So I was really new to the process. My best tip is to wrap things that could get dirty or damaged in a truck, especially your beds. I wrapped mine with lots of plastic and it stayed clean. You don't want your beds to be dragged across a dirty truck bed! Good luck!
-
My tip is something that I've never actually done and always regret. Every time I've moved, I mean to go through stuff and throw it out, but I always run out and time and never do. And I wind up packing everything which just makes more work. So not that I can say from experience, but definitely try to get rid of stuff instead of automatically just packing it up!
-
Shay, we just built and move….best tip ever is to put RED tape on the boxes that need opened immediately! Like stuff you'll use and need right away, the rest can wait!
Gena 🙂

Pack all your essentials that you will need for the first few days in your new house in separate boxes so if you don't manage to unpack everything right away you'll still have clothes to wear, toiletries and all other essentials.
-
Hmmm, we are building a house too! I'm going to steal all these tips too.
The best tip I have is to get TONS of blankets from wherever you rent a truck, and make sure you wrap everything. Especially furniture!!
You would hate to get to the new house and have your table all scratched up. 🙁
Good Luck with the moveS!

Best moving advice I can think of: pay someone else to do it!!
-
Make sure that roll clothes up. It makes t-shirts smaller.
-
A lot of labeling advice already–but if you can, number any boxes as well–and have a list on hand as to which numbered box holds what. That will save you time on the unpacking end. Before you open a box, you'll know what's in it.
Avoid the "miscellaneous" boxes as much as possible. 😉 -
We are military so have moved a few times. My favorite tips are to pack all silverware, utensils, and any thing small that belongs in a drawer in a ziploc baggy. When you unpack it everything goes right back into a drawer. Also make a list of what you will need with in the first few days and put all that stuff in a desinated spot and pack it all together. Label all boxes and put what to major items in it are such as toaster, blender. So you can find them easier. PANS… DVD, PRINTER… all the stuff would will be looking for… towels.
Good luck with your move. -
As you know, we have moved A LOT!!! I've found that sometimes long distance moves are easier than local moves. And I think part of it is the mentality with a local vs long distance move. That said, pack everything you can in boxes. The temptation with a local move is to think "Oh, I'll just throw that in my car…" But then you end up with all this random stuff at the end that you have to move by hand. For uniformity and cleanliness BUY moving boxes and packing paper. You can buy at Uhaul or order online.
-
Get as much possible done before you move into the new house — much easier that way! Also, recruit friends to help (this is one surefire way to find out who is really a friend…) Good luck!
~Michelle (@mhughessc)
-
Label EVERYTHING!! Write the contents of the box on the outside of it to help with unpacking. Once the boxes etc. are moved into the house, set them in the room they have to go in and attack one room at a time. I found that I left non-essential boxes to the end and spent 20 minutes every few hours (in between everything else I was doing) and did one or two boxes at a time. Makes it not so overwhelming! Good luck! 🙂

With your family facing "two moves", my suggestion would be to rent a storage space and store things that you and your family can do without,
while living in your rental home. When your new home is completed, you can take your time moving the things in storage.
May the peace of Christ be with you and your precious family.
S. Bridges -
Use this opportunity to organize and get rid of things you no longer use so that you won't have to stress over going through everything again at the new house. Happy Moving 🙂
Rita -
Get rid of things you haven't used in a long time or that your family has outgrown first. A garage sale or consignment store are great ways to do that, and then you can use the money you make to put towards things you love for our new home
-
I like to keep my kitchen drawers as organized as possible when i move. To do that i put one drawer of stuff in a brown paper bag, label the bag (ie measuring spoons) then box it up. It makes unpacking the kitchen a breeze and keeps from having so many loose items in the moving box.
-
save your sanity and pay someone to do your packing 😉
-
I'm an organizer so I label everything!!
On the side of boxes I like to put the main things in the box & on top of the box I write what room it belongs in. Makes it easier for you & anyone else helping you move! -
My best advice for packing is to pack one room at a time. We moved last year and instead of going crazy on a packing frenzy I just focused on one room at time. It really help a lot! Good luck, Shay! LOVE your blog!
-
Number your boxes and do a corresponding inventory notebook, that way you will know exactly what is in each box. You can be very general like "toys" but for some you will want to be more specific, especially for the boxes with different category items in them 🙂
Good Luck! -
Start saving boxes like yesterday, label them, and set each box in its appropriate room the minute it gets to your new home so that you don't have to move them more than once.
Good luck!
-
I say hire a moving company….well worth it!

-
I'm only 19 and I've moved 6 times 🙁 I would say have a few "open me first" boxes for your sweet kiddos! (stuffed animals, favorite pj's, toys etc). It will probably be weird for them moving at such a young age (as it was to me too) but having one special box that they get to open first will be fun!! good luck!!
-
Girl… we've talked. Rubbermaid containers ALL THE WAY! 🙂
-
Label your boxes on EVERY side!!! That way, no matter how they are loaded or arranged, you will know what is in them. ~Whitney Davis
-
My only tip is to somehow label each and every box. I know, I know, it's so DUH but the last move I didn't do that and it was a big pain. I would label by color or at least very boldly so you know exactly where to put each box when it's unloaded.
-
Label, Label, Label!!!
-
I saw this packing tip on Pinterest: Place Styrofoam plates in between your breakable plates when you stack them. It saves you the trouble of having to wrap each plate in a towel or newspaper or something else.
-
In 7 years of marriage, my husband and I have moved 8 times! My best tip, hire movers!!! No seriously, try to pack organized and throw out anything that you think you won't need. Don't move junk! We have things that my husband will not part with, this box of his junk, has been in every attic of every house we've ever lived in. Don't fall into this trap! Toss it when your husband (or kids) aren't looking!
-
Even when you get frustrated don't just start throwing things in a box. It will be so hard to unpack it all when you move and you WILL regret it!!
-
I would suggest packing up by room, putting items that you need first and the most together, labeling the boxes well and then start unpacking by those things you need the most.
-
Pack an emergency bag for each of you. The must haves- special blanket, book, spare outfit, special toys, books, anything you can't live without for more than a week. Mom and Dads bags might include phone charger, computer and everyday items.Put those in the car so they are always with you and can be easily found.Even prepackages treat to fall back on– you will all be stressed and tired. Juice box, cutie orange and teddy grahams can pacify even an adult in an emergency:) Good luck, in the end it will all be so worth it!! Sue O
-
Get rid of as much stuff as possible before you start packing, so you are not moving stuff that is not important any more!!!
-
Work on one room at a time and label everything! Denise

Make sure you get real hardwood floors not pre-fab. Let them actually install the hardwood and stain them to your liking so that the color is rich and get high gloss. Beware of back doors by these floors due to great dust collection. Get a JENN-AIRE Down draft stove with the indoor grilling feature it is the best. DOUBLE OVENS ONLY! Vegetable sink and Regular Sink. Awesome large eat in Kitchen and a Keeping Room (extra den) for family with fireplace real cozy. Design making sure there is enough privacy. With open plans you can hear TV's throughout the house especially if you have surround sound. Make it homey and cozy not just gorgeous. You have to live there not just entertain there. A keeping room with walls gives you a home feel and open two-story foyer and close off some of the privacy areas upstairs, so your kids are not showing off undies to neighbors with those large windows. 🙂 My baby son gave the neighbors quite a view! We built double stairs and lovely archways and angles. Beautifully done. Did not go with white trim outside but cream and that same look as the Harlequin mansion for a Roman look. IT set our house a part. I can send you a picture of what I mean if you need it. Mona
-
tip #1- pack your dishes or breakables in your linens and
#2- no matter how far you move EVERYTHING should go in a box.
#3 Hire movers. Moving is stressful and you still work your tale off no matter what.
Happy Moving! -
Shay – Thanks for the great giveaway opportunity. My suggestion is to do a purge before you move! We moved into our house 8 years ago and there are still boxes in the basement we never fully unpacked. Obviously stuff we didn't need to move! (And you don't want to move those twice!)
-
Take the paint chips from the colors you choose, put a small key ring on them and carry them in your purse! That way, if you are out shopping and see something that you like, you have the colors of the room right there with you! It also helps to write room dimensions on the chips to help with knowing if something will fit! 🙂
Love your blog and your family!

Here goes… Throw your hair up, put on some Michael Buble.. grab your coffee and a suitcase, yes that's right, a suitcase. You're going to pack a suitcase for each of you 4 as if you are taking roughly a 2-3 day trip. This will make everything you need to function, handy and available during the madness!
Once finished, refill your cup…
1. Gather boxes/plastic storage containers
2. tape
3. markers
4. scissors, newspaper/bubble wrap or maybe even peanuts…you can also use bedsheets and blankets for your most precious delicates.Pick the least used room, start there and pack away! Put the items you want to take out first, last so you won't be digging through looking for things.
Color code your boxes by taking colored sharpies and designating a different color for each room (Red-Living Room, Blue-Kitchen, then just make a simple mark or get the kiddos to streak the box with the appropriate color.
Be sure to have boxes that are designated priority that will have any necesary "moving day" necessities such as:
1.Light Bulbs
2.Flashlight
3.Paper Towels
4.Plastic utensils
5.snacks
6.toilet paper
7.bottled water
8.sippy cupsALSO have a box with
1. Bleach
2.All Purpose Cleaner
3.Rags, Bucket
4.Broom & Dust Pan, etc.Keep these boxes so you know where they are so you can easily make the new place "functional" and free from bacteria and funk.
Move in all furniture first, these items are heavier and you have more energy when the day begins rather than the end of the day when everyone is zonked! Arrange accordingly (By having the children's beds already put together, if it gets late and they're sleepy they'll feel more at ease to have their own beds to climb into), then move in the boxes, starting from the back of the house to the front so you aren't tripping and wading through boxes and clutter.
Also be sure to notify the Post Office, Bank, etc. And I'm sure you have this covered but don't forget your Renter's Insurance, so you don't loose your furnishings.
You might want to change the locks, who wants someone out there to potentially have a key!Oh yea, SMOKE DETECTORS, make sure they're in working order and have 9 volts handy. OR …. Yes you guessed, there's ALWAYS an "OR"…. bite the bullet and pay movers, in that case … grab your most prize possessions, pack them up, take photos of each room and then hit the mall, gym or somewhere and let them bust a move!
I hope this helps make the day more productive and minimizes the chaos! Best of Luck & God Bless

Hire packers and movers. It makes life so much easier! Just make sure you label your boxes REALLY well. We are in the same boat as y'all. Moved to a rental while our house is being built. Mover packed us, but didn't label well, and we can't fin anything! Good luck! ~Betsy
-
Pack your dishes using foam plates between them.
-
I would suggest labeling each box with what is in the box and also which room the box should go to. A space saving tip is to roll up tshirts instead of folding them flat. I just learned this method, and it saves a ton of space! Happy moving!!
-
Label everything and put what room it goes in so the movers know what room to put the boxes in. Think of your typical day and what you typically use. Have a box that you pack with all that stuff for each room/area. You can color code those boxes and have them loaded last so they will be the first off the truck. Best of luck! ~Edith
-
Label well!! Good luck! Lizzie S

Throw away and donate the things your don't use, so you don't clutter up your new house =)
-
We just moved across the country 4 months ago from GA to CA. I always worry about dishes and glasses. Even when you wrap them they still end up break because of pressure of them rubbing together and laying on top of each other. I went to a package store and got the wine boxes with the dividers. I wrap them in newspaper and put them in their individual slots. We also packed them last so nothing would be on top of them. Not one broken dish or glass 🙂
-
We moved across country several months ago and used a moving company to load and unload the truck. The best tip that I have is to generically label the boxes and on a separate sheet itemize the boxes with the specifics of what's in the box. That way you can easily identify what's in each box and you don't have to open each box to find what you are looking for. This also makes it more difficult for someone to steal valuables if you are using a moving company.
-
Create “Open Me First” boxes- Pick one or two boxes per room as "Open Me First" boxes. Put in them the things you'll need first at your new location. Then mark the sides of the boxes so you'll know which ones are which.
-
I love the wardrobe boxes!! Also, label any and everything that you are moving!! We also did a big purge before moving into our new house. I was amazed at how much stuff we had that we didn't need! Good luck!
-
My advice is for the building process. My most favorite thing we did when we built our house was hand writing Bible verses on the wooden frame of our house. We went through each room of our house and wrote with Sharpie markers the verses on the wood. It really was a special memory and even now I think back and love that our house was literally built upon God's word and promises! Praying that your precious family loves every moment in your new home making lots of new memories! Brandy S.
-
I like to go room by room. I buy different colored duct tape and color code the boxes according to the room. Try not to think too hard about what not to pack, you'll end up with way more than you need.
Packing is the pits so think of how exciting it will be to unpack!
Best wishes on your big move!
Mandi L. -
Hire movers!
-
We have moved 4 times in 3 years (military) and we always move ourselves. My best advice is keep a hotel room or rental house until your home is somewhat live able. You'll need a break! Also clean before you start putting things in the house and organize as you unpack or it may never happen… You don't want to have to move things twice within the same house!
-
We just moved from AZ to VA a few months ago. It may be my type A personality but I labeled each box kitchen box #2, kitchen box #2, dining room box #1, dining room box #2, etc. Then I took it a step further by writing down in a notebook the exact contents that were in each box. This way when we unpacked I knew exactly which boxes contained what we needed most and which boxes could wait to be unpacked. Also, we placed some items in storage so if and when I need to access those items I already having a running inventory of those items because after a few months or so I know I will forget. Good luck on the move!
-
Maybe you should call AshLee – she is a professional organizer right?!
-
The best tip for packing or moving is to color code the packaging tape that you use on your boxes by room. This helps keep everything organized and more easily identifiable than simply writing the corresponding room name on the side of a box.

I meant to respond to this post and forgot. Thought I'd share my experience/ tips with building a home. We built ours 2 years ago, but it feels like yesterday!
If you build a house:
Don't go with "standard grade carpet" we did and I regret it, 2 years later and it already needs replaced.
Pay the extra to get rooms extra insulated such as office. We have kids bedrooms down stairs and right next to each other so we paid extra to insulate their rooms and have thicker doors. Makes a difference if one is crying and one is sleeping for us!
Sealing the tile, granite, and stone the day before you move in if the builder will let you.
K hovanian was our builder and they were great! I've also heard highland is a good builder.
Also if you are staying in the area, winding creek is a great neighborhood and houses are going up fast. It's in Frisco with Frisco ISD. It's on the boarder of Frisco and McKinney.
That's about all I can think of, good luck!

My tip for house-building (if your experience is going to be anything like mine) is to be prepared for lots of delays! It's okay! You WILL get into your beautiful home eventually!! <3 Trust in God's timing!

Make sure to have easy pull together meals or already prepared meals for the first few days in the house when things are in disarray – it will make your life a lot easier and less stressful when dealing with everything else going on in the house with the move. During the chaos it so nice just to sit down enjoy a nice meal with the family!
Chrissy says
Make sure you get a linen closet in your kids bathroom. We were kid free when we built and there is no closet in that bathroom and no room for shelving. 1 sink cabinet for a daughter and guests is not going to be enough and I'm not sure how we fix that now!

My advice would be to print out pictures of ideas you like to show your builder. I printed pictures of layouts for the laundry room, mudroom, etc and then discussed them with the builder and customized them to make them exactly how I wanted so later I wasn't left wishing it was a bit different. Now is the time to make it exactly like you want and works best for your family! Good luck!

Shay – love your blogs! We have built 4 homes and now we just moved into our 1st ready built home (won't do it again). My advice is this. Even though we have wireless phones, printers, and etc please continue to put telephone jacks in rooms. I work from home and my basement office doesn't have one and it makes it difficult at times to get good reception on your cell phones. I had to put in an outlet phone transmitter just to have a land line but I wish I had a direct wired line. Also, for each bed and the bathrooms I had a box that I put in the clean sheets, mattress pads, towels, toilet paper, soap and etc in so when we got the beds setup I had everything I needed to get our rooms ready for our 1st night's sleep without rummaging through boxes. It was a life saver. Best of luck on the move(s) and build. I'm secretly jealous. I think we are going to put the house the market in the spring and look at building again.

This sounds odd, but have plenty of light switches. The house we bought was built by an electrician and has lights and switches galore. We have light switches on each side of the bed (one for the main bedroom lights and one for the outlet beside the bed for turning lamps on/off). Plus two other sets of switches on the room to turn these same lights on/off.

Don't forget to label fragile or this side up!

Ireland somewhere that if you have extra room your property always build an extra space in your garage.
It is typically the cheapest space to build and provides an extra space for a car or storing work supplies.

Hi Shay.
When we built our house I wish we made our garage larger so we would have extra storage room, almost like having a built-in shed.
Good luck with your house and enjoy the process! It's fun and exciting to have a brand new house to make memories in!!
BTW we have the same birthday!!

If I were building (or renovating my kitchen), I would definately include a double oven. I am lusting over one of those babies now and have been for over a year. Oh, and by the way—my family LOVES the lasagna rollups with spinach and cream cheese; they are DELICIOUS!
Kim Bayt says
Hey Shay,
My piece of advice would be to make sure to include your kids in the process. Let them have input on the colors/themes of their own bedrooms and bathrooms. Try to make what could be a scary experience (leaving the only home they know)into a positive and exciting event!
Kim Bayt
Hannah Myer says
Order extra! For things like paint and tiles (even door knobs) order 10-15% extra of what you need. When a mark gets on the wall or tiles crack down the road, you'll be grateful that you have the exact same item to repair it with, and you don't have to worry about it being discontinued. Also, put dimmers on all your light switches! Nothing can kill a mood more than a room being too bright or too dark!
Didi says
My advice is to trust your instinct on what you want. You may be in this house for a long time so make sure your builder is not trying to convince you to do something you don't really want or need. Also, tons of closet space! You will never regret it!
Mary Mueller says
Storage! I don't think you can ever have enough storage room… closets, drawers. One tip for the bathroom, don't put pull-out drawers right next to the bathroom door. As a dear friend just discovered as her one year old pulled the drawers open, making it impossible to open the bathroom door more than a half an inch, she was locked in their for quite awhile as they figured out how to get the drawers shut! Good luck with your house building… too fun!
Tara G. says
Another quick thought- if you have things that are sentimentally valuable that you won't need during transition (photo books, your husband's football items, etc.), I would pack those myself and store them at your parents' home rather than at a commercial place if you plan on going that route.
Assuming this means you've sold the house and I rejoice with you! We are heading out today to go back and take care of a house we rented out while we were overseas and put it back on the market. Having a hard time getting motivated for the trip and work ahead…!

1-Nurture your relationship with your builder and be a good communicator-which I'm sure you are already!
2-If possible put in a laundry chute? Depending on the design of house.
3-Create a Drop "Locker" Zone – where you will most likely be entering the home.
4-Have your Kitchen open to your living spaces for entertaining purposes.
5-Think timeless when choosing perm fixtures, colors, trim etc.
6-Maximize all storage options.
7-Create a fun spot for kids ie. phone booth, small play nook…
8-Kitchen-put in drink fridge drawers? and maybe two dishwashers…just tips I have seen done.
Can you tell I want to build a custom home…sigh.
Blessings to you Shay (&Sean) 🙂

Shay – My husband and I put in a slate shower. It is very pretty. However, it is extremely difficult to keep clean. If I could go back, I would NEVER use slate in the shower. It is my biggest regret about our house. So my advice is, whatever you do, do NOT use slate in any of your showers. An interior designer picked the slate for us…big mistake!

Kitchen advice:put the outlets under the counters, not on the wall in the backsplash. That way your backsplash is solid and beautiful with no outlets breaking it up!
Kitchen pantry:if space allows build a small desk in back of pantry. This is a perfect place to store bills, manuals, recipes, etc and it is out of the way and hidden!

Good luck!!

Hi Shay!!
We literally JUST moved into our newly built home that we custom designed and built. 🙂 LOVING it!
#1 – My kitchen is the favorite room in the house, so I spent some extra time planning and designing it 🙂 Something we did that EVERYONE has commented on, we have an EXTRA large walk-in pantry WITH our upright freezer inside of it 🙂 Extra freezer space for all the freezer meals that we do and no need to have to go downstairs every time.
#2 – Also in the kitchen, we have 9 ft ceilings and decided to go with extra tall cabinets throughout the entire kitchen. Not only does it give extra cabinet space, but it also gives it a really modern look and makes the kitchen look HUGE!
#3 – We have USB outlets multiple place throughout the house! Some people don't even know they exist. They are so handy now that so many electronics can be plugged in by USB. We have one right in our kitchen so that phones and iPods, etc can be plugged into charge while sitting on the kitchen counter-top. 🙂
#4 – We have a mudroom/laundry room right off of the hallway coming from the garage! I love having the extra sink right there so that if we come in from outside all muddy or dirty, hands can be washed right away without going through the house, ALSO dirty clothes can come off right away and go into the washer. It's also nice to have the laundry away from all the bedrooms so that if needed, a load can be going while sleeping with disturbing anyone.
Hope these are helpful! ENJOY every minute of the building process. It goes by quickly! Ours was 90 days from start to finish 🙂

My biggest piece of advice comes from the kitchen. Make sure to enclude a cabinet for baking sheets. And a cabinet for spices. This has helped me make my kitchen so much more organized 🙂 Best wishes! Building a home is an amazing experience!

Hi Shay, I have been following both your blogs for 9 months now. I love both your blogs & cute family! We are in the process of building a house as well! One of the first changes we made to our plan was to close off our second story great room, as it would share a common wall with our master upstairs, and my husband had a concern about noise. Having the 9 ft ceilings, and adding a lot of windows helps the great room not feel closed in. Since we closed off the great room, we decided to install a dual zone thermostat (one for upstairs, and one for downstairs). This way we can turn off the heat/cold downstairs at night….save $!!

Hi Shay,
There are a few things they I wish we would have done in our house when building. We have a closet right when you enter from the garage but I wish I would have put lockers too. That way there is a place to store my purse, bags, etc…now they end up on our kitchen counter. I also wish we built extra storage in the garage for riding toys. We are trying to figure out a way now to add on or build a shed. Good luck! I loved building and enjoyed the process. Try not to stress and keep in mind that they always take longer than expected. I also blew our budget right away…whoops!

Our house was custom built, but not by us. The one thing the previous homeowners included that I LOVED was built in hampers in the bathrooms. It’s right underneath the towel closest with a small door to lift up and drop clothes in. No more messing with the store bought hampers with liners.
I do not have this, but, I like the idea of having “hideaways” on the kitchen counter to hide appliances. It’s almost like a little door that slides along the kitchen counter. It gives the kitchen a clean, clutter-less look.
Something I saw on Pinterest that I will definitely be including in my house (one day) is little nooks in the shower to put shampoo, soap, razor, etc. I do not like the look of the shelves that hang over the showerhead, or having everything placed along the edge of the tub.
Can’t wait to see pictures of the new home! Good Luck!

Transition to two homes in such a short period of time can be difficult but doesn't have to be. Make several boxes to set aside that you will need handy when you move into the new house from the rent house…things like towels and linens. It's super important to label what's in each box to make the hunt more easy when you need to find something you thought you had set aside already. Best of luck!

My two favorite features when we built are: (1) lockers that we put when you enter from the garage. Even my young kids know to put their stuff there and (2) garbage/ recycling station that we put in the island. My kids don't think twice about recycling. Its so convenient.
When you do your electrical and are deciding outlets, not only think about where you want lighting but also other things you will use them for like vacuuming. I wish I had an outlet on the landing of my slingback stairs, it would make it so much easier. I also wish I wouldve put one on the floor instead of wall in my living room. Agree with a prior outlet around phone jacks…you just never know and I wish I had a few more also because I work from home and prefer not to use my cell.

Love both of your blogs. We just finished our Kitchen Renovation. Took 6 weeks and totally gutted the entire kitchen down to the studs. We created extra 12 inch cabinets on the back side of the island for kid storage (school papers, art supplies etc). So, we have doors on both sides of the island. 4 Total cabinets for the island. Two are for pots/pans etc and the other are the Kids STuff. LOVE it and best thing I did. Here is the link so you can see the entire project. Be sure to save extra paints/finishes… because you will need them and nothing is worse than not being able to match up paint colors when your toddler has decided to run his/her toy into your newly painted walls! Also, storage, you can never have enough! Last but not least, for your children, design their rooms for them to grow into… you dont want to be re-doing a room in a few years, so keep the colors/designs simple and then you can change out items in the coming years as needed. 🙂 Love your blog!

My advice on building, is pay attention to some little thing that you might not think of….outlets and placement of them!
I wish I had put an outlet just above my mantle, for plugging in those Christmas lights on the mantle. Also, consider putting an outlet in your bathroom cabinet to plug in things that need charging (electric razor, etc) so they don't have to sit out to charge.

Check out cstyle blog's awesome closet with tons of drawers! Love! We love having built ins in bedrooms. As for the packing, I buy a pack of multi colored paper and dedicate one color for each room printing the room name, a table to list out contents and whether it is short or long term storage (we've moved in stages). I print out the 8-1/2 x 11 sheets and tape them to the outside of the moving box (check Craigslist for gently used professional moving boxes). Then fill out contents as I go with the sharpie. Love the quick visual cue when moving in and others are distributing boxes. Oh, have family take the kids so you can get the majority of it set up without them! Have so much fun! Barbra S.

We remodeled our kitchen last year and I have 2 favorite features that I'm not sure how I ever lived without.
The first is a extra deep single basin sink. It was actually my hubby's idea to get a single sink instead of the double and I love it! You don't have to worry about cookie sheets and large pots & pans fitting awkwardly in the sink. The sink is so deep that my large stock pot can sit in it & you can't see it.
The second feature that I love is roll-out shelves. All of our cabinets have shelves that pull out so that you can easily reach that pot or pan that got pushed to the back. So convienent!

If I ever build a home, I would have two master closets!

We just recently bought our first, already built, custom home and we are so thankful for the amount of light switches and outlets they first owners thought of. There are plugs that you wouldn't even think to have them. Love reading your blog, too!

1.Have a Double Oven
2. Make your garage larger. We have a 3 stall garage and on the two door side where we park our vehicles, it's a very tight squeeze- apparently this is standard and you need to ask for larger. I would highly recommend this.
3. TONS of light switches and outlets. You can never have too many – If you know what headboard and size of bed you and your husband will have, put light switches on either side of the headboard for your main light, fan, etc so you don't have to get out of bed to turn the lights on and off.
4. Add a broom closet in your kitchen. We found our idea off pinterest (like I found many of our ideas) and everyone who comes in our house has never seen anyting like it. The top part has a few shelves for all your cleaning supplies, and the bottom has hooks or even room for a vacuum. That way everything is right where you need it, but hidden nicely. Here is the picture we had shown our builder :http://pinterest.com/pin/24347654206039411/
5. Soft close toliets, cabinets and drawers. This was a somewhat expensive upgrade in our home but TOTALLY worth it. My husband claims I am a "cabinet and toliet slammer" so this was on our must have list. You just touch the toliet lid and it goes down, and for the drawers and cabinets you push it to close and it does the rest on its on.
6. Don't get dark/espresso colored cabinets. They are absolutely beautiful and it's what we have, but they show everything- they need to be dusted almost every other day and they show water marks, hand prints, etc. Same goes for our dark hardwood- it's also an espresso and very pretty but I need to clean it almost daily for it to look nice (and we have no pets/kids).
7. Make all of your under cabinets have drawers that roll out. When you need someone it's so much easier than reaching far back to find it when the drawer can just roll out. Here is the picture we used for inspiration: http://pinterest.com/pin/24347654205156041/
8. If your laundry is downstairs and your bedrooms are upstairs, put a laundry chute in our closet. It's one of our favorite things we have in our custom closet.
I could go on and on- these are my favorites of our newly built house!

My best advice on building a house is expect setbacks. Don't be disappointed at the process or how long it takes. Think of it like a marriage. Your focus should not be on the actual house (the ceremony) but on making the house a home (the marriage) once you are in it.
Also make sure the painters leave the leftover paint they use indoors. Trust me you will need it for touchup through the years. And don't store it in the garage. The heat can destroy. Best place is in the pantry or linen closet.

I haven't built a house myself but we recently moved into a new house and here are a couple of things I desparately wish I had:
-The Christmas Electrical Package: this is where there is an outlet under each window in the house so at Christmas when we put candles in the windows, you just keep them plugged in and flip a light switch everyday when you want them to come on
-Outlets in bathroom drawers. This way, you can keep your hair dryer and other hair products plugged up and hidden instead of on the counter. I don't know that I would keep a hair straightener or curling iron plugged in but I love the concept of not junking up the bathroom counter.
Congrats on your new home!

Make sure you have enough electrical plugs put in in places you will need them! Our house has them few and far between so it is a pain to get lamps in rooms, etc. And in our kitchen there is a whole counter space that has no plugs – for a chef/baker it is tough!!!

If you're going to have stairs, I recommend you put an electrical outlet close to either the top or bottom (preferably someplace inconspicuous). Vacuum cords and Christmas lights on a garland will be much easier to plug in.
I enjoy your blog! I'm much older than you – and entertain a lot – your comment "cooking is not entertaining" really spoke to my heart. I've passed that wisdom on to my daughter and several friends. Thanks! Leslie

My best advice, coming from nannying for a family who is remodeling, heated floors are awesome. They are putting them in the bathrooms and the entryway from the garage. It's awesome. Granted we are in frigid Minnesota and you are in Texas, but they are great.

Dream big, be patient…and take lots of pictures! Obviously you like to take lots of photos already…and as a scrapbooker, that was my original purpose for taking weekly pictures as we were building our house, but since then we have found those pictures helpful when we were doing other projects. Essentially, we can see behind our walls and above our ceilings, with out needing to open the walls. Plus it is awesome to look at the evolution from an empty lot to our perfect home!
Enjoy,

Go for the three car garage option. You can always fill the extra space with random stuff that needs to be stored in the garage (i.e. Christmas decor, gym equipment, dog food, emergency stockpile) and will love being able to completely open your doors to get the kids out of their carseats.

I've never built a house, but I hope to someday!
Two suggestions:
1. Pray over each room as you are building. You can also write scripture or quotes on the frames. My mission team did this while building a home in Mexico. It was pretty neat and pretty powerful! 🙂
2. Saw this on pinterest – use recessed outlets so that the plugs don't stick out from the wall. It allows for the furniture to be flat agains the wall!
Best of luck!

I personally have never built a house but my parents built 2 while I was growing up. So from a kids point of view, it can be a little hectic not being in a permanent place, especially if the new house gets delayed. My tip would be to let them be a part of the process – maybe help with a design feature or even just the paint color in their new room or playroom. It was also really cool for us to see the process of our house being built, from when it was just the frame, to the drywall, etc. If you go to check on your houses's progress, let them explore a little (as long as it's safe).

🙂 – Kara

If your house is already being built, it might be too late for this now, but install electrical outlets INSIDE some of the closets. Here you can plug in all kinds of things, a night light, your electric vacuum or dustbuster, your iron. They surprisingly come in VERY handy.
Have your pantry door open to reveal sliding drawers. I LOVE this. Easy to see your spices and canned foods all laid out before you.

Lots of Plugs….as we use so many for all our 'powered' gadgets!
NO to dark colored bathroom sinks….toothpaste is white my friend and it's always showing on my dark sink….Big mistake…never again!
Watch what the builders are doing. We knocked out our bathroom wall 3x times cause it was framed crooked.
Pre-wire sound system, etc.
We bribed our builders (Pulte) to leave the attic open (ie. no tresses (I think that was the name)…so we could floor it later.
Also verify the brick before they put it on the house…(Yes, they bricked ours with the wrong brick even though we told them it was the wrong one) the day before our wedding.
SO verify EVERYTHING!
Be Patient!! Stressful but fun!

Very exciting! Two little things…
-Make sure that you have everything in writing for you plans. Sometimes builders are busy and may not remember all of your conversations.
-Also, sounds little, but try to think ahead of about possible furniture placement and make sure that you have outlets for lamps based on where furniture may be. You have even have them on the floor by where you think you may have a coffee table.

If you know you want something, then ask for it and incorporate it now! Its a lot easier/less costly to incorporate the littler details while everyone is already there doing the work and making the mess building, so you might as well get what you REALLY want (like a space just for your crafty stuff/baking stuff/built-ins/a window seat, etc.) and even though it might feel like you're just adding to an already costly build, you'll be happier in the long run and it will cost less than having them come back another time to put something in/rearrange something previously done!

One thing my sister and my aunt both have that I covet is built in trash can cabinet in the kitchen near your work space. It slides out and conceals not one but TWO trash cans! The front just looks like the regular cabinets. Keeps the smell out and allows for a lot of trash before it needs dumped 🙂

Kitchen advice (and sadly I speak from experience):
Be VERY careful when designing what goes in the corners of the design. In one corner, our dishwasher was put in at the end and then the counter turns left and has a bank of drawers. After the knobs were put on the drawers, we could not open the dishwasher because it hit the knobs on the drawers. Let me tell you how fun that wasn't to deal with, But clearly corners weren't our builder's specialty, because on the other corner, we have a drawer that you can't open even halfway because it hits the knob from the pull-out trash can that's up against the corner. We since learned that anything being put in a corner should have at least 8 inches between it and the true corner, to allow plenty of room so the crazy things that happened to us don't happen!!! 🙂

Hi Shay,
I just finished building my dream home last year. My first tip for building is to have a wonderful contractor. Ours did EVERYTHING & followed my directions wonderfully! Second, pick out the things that you will need in advance. If you know you will have a hard time picking things like cabinets, spend time in advance so you will not have to make quick decisions that you may regret.
Good luck!

My best house building advice comes from me hearing my mom talk after she had built her "dream house." If there is something you really want, such as a specific backsplash or tile, do it now so you don't regret it later. If you think "we'll save money now & redo it later" 1) it usually doesn't happen 2) it's more expensive to do later 3) you'll regret it in the long run. XOXO Praying for you guys! Michelle

Make sure you are involved in every aspect. Both times we were remodeling our home I was pregnant and I made quick decisions or handed the decision off to someone else. When I had the babies and I was sitting down breastfeeding… I would look at the house and say, "What was I thinking?" such as choosing carpet over hardwood in the new addition. WRONG. It's been a nightmare with spills and already looks terrible. So, take your time and don't do major remodels when pregnant. hehe 🙂

I haven't built a house but we have remodeled 85 % of ours in the last 2 years. I biggest piece of advice is that things will go wrong. I'm somewhat of a perfectionist and you can get ulcers from mistakes that contractors make, the paint color isn't what you thought, it costs more than you had budgeted, etc. So my piece of advice is to choose the things that are most important to you and make sure those things happen just as want but you will have to let some things go or you will make yourself crazy trying to make it "perfect" because not everything will be perfect.

We have built three homes, so I have lots of advice. I would definately recommend having a walk-in attic. This is so nice and so much easier than having to pull down stairs to get to an attic. Also, a laundry sink is a must, especially with little ones- this makes life so much easier for spot cleaning their clothes. I would definately have a large island in the center of your kitchen with an additional sink in the island. Another great help is a pottery barn style entry system built in with hooks and drawers or baskets for the bottom. This is wonderful with kids!

We've been in our the house we built for just over a year now.
Some regrets we have: light switch and eletrical outlet placing. Really think that over. Also, if you're doing tile flooring, our grout colors turned out several shades lighter. Not sure if it was our installer or the brand, but get a good idea on what it will look like so you're happy with it in the end!
Some things we are glad we did: Pocket door on the mud room. We're in an out so much that having a regular open door would be in the way. Instead we leave our pocket door tucked away most of the time and out of sight. I also love my tub sink in the laundry room!
Good luck! It's an exciting time to build a house and then make it your home!

My friend did this and I LOVED it!! As a family, right before all of the floors were carpeted/wood was laid/etc., they went and wrote Bible verses in each room. Their kids were a little older, so they chose some of their favorites to write, but I just thought that was the coolest idea!! 🙂

I have zero advice in this department, but after living in my small, two bedroom, one bath home… I would say lots of cabinet space is a MUST, in both the kitche and the bathroom(s). I am constantly trying to declutter or rearrange things in my cabinets and it seems like there just isn't enough room for everything! Very frustrating. Another necessity for my next house will be three- prong outlets! The house my boyfriend and I live in now only has two prong, and it makes things really difficult! Some cords (my Keurig or plug-in wall Scentsy burners to be exact) are too heavy for adapters. I know pretty much all homes come with three- prong outlets, but you don't realize what a blessing they are until you are stuck with old fashioned ones! 🙂

I would suggest if having a second floor to have the main laundry room on the second floor and perhaps if it is possible to have a stack able laundry system on the first floor perhaps near the backdoor entry. We just built a home so I could probably think of alot of tips. But one is to think of where you are going to put up Christmas lights and decor and plan electrical outlets and switches accordingly. I've got an outlet above the kitchen cabinets w/ a switch near the sink for the lights that I put in the garland on top of the cabinets. HI Shay,
I wrote on your other blog as well. We are doing the same as you, sold our house and are living in a condo while building.
TIPS-
1) Electrical…think Christmas. Plug by stairs for lit garland, outlet in corners for decor, outlet in soffit outside for lights (no hanging strings). Also put an outlet in pantry, utility closet for charging vaccuum etc.
-put outlet in your cabinet under the sink in the bath…great for charging sonicare, electric razors..that you dont want on your nice counter all the time!
2)Everyone seems to have lockers and cubbies in thier mudroom nowadays, I put a door on our lockers so you cant see all the coats etc. hanging there. We also did a locker for each kid for thier personal space.
3) Ceilings!!!! Your house will look soo beautiful and custome with some different ceiling designs..cauffered, wood plank, corbels, beams etc.
Cant wait to see pics! Do you have a design yet?

My best homebuilding tip is to make a list of everything you want in a home and then prioritze it: what you absoultely cannot live without down to things you can pass on. When it comes to making big decisions (especially ones that hit your budget), pull out the list. Also, know that after the fact that there will be things you wish you had done differently and that is okay. Also, we chose o have them paint every room the same color (except the nursery) so we could live in it a year and then paint. We have been here 2 1/2 years and we have almost everything painted now and almost everything is a different color than I would have done when we were building.

We are still about two years away from building our forever home, but weirdly we like to drive through our future neighborhood just to dream!! Ha!! One thing I think you should think about with the layout of your family or great room is where your Christmas tree will go!! My mom always says that when they built she wishes they would have thought about that. And I know you love Christmas, so I'd make sure you have the perfect house layout for the summer months or during Christmas!

I think this is common sense but from the stories I hear from friends and family that have built…. apparently it isn't. 🙂 As you build, and options come along, ALWAYS ask how much it will add to the cost of the house. Options are almost never free. And if they are… ask why! I know people who never asked and at the end of the building process, realized they were paying a lot more then they initially budgeted for. Hope this doesn't happen to you! Happy building!!! – Shonda

Look around your house now and decide what you wish you had. Do you have any clutter that would be nice to have a solution for? A better way to store pots and pans? A place for backpacks and shoes? Etc. I want a cleaning closet specifically for the vacuum and all things cleaning. And I'd love to have a little prayer room – my doctor has one in the office and its sooo peaceful. Even has LED lights in the ceiling that look like stars. Love it!

My tips are to do as many upgrades as you can afford now, because it will be less you have to do later- such as higher quality carpet or better yet hardwood floors, hardware, kitchen appliances, etc. Also, be aware of wasted space in a house & try to avoid it. I regret having a dining room and sitting room (colonial style). I would use the space for one big kitchen. Also I would have a mudroom if I were to do it over again.

Make it unique! When my parents built our house, instead of wasting the space underneath the stairs, they made that space into a little room with carpet and an outlet for a lamp. The room was only about 4 feet tall, so adults couldn't really fit into it, but it was perfect for us when we were kids. We were short enough to be able to stand the little room. We put a small kid's table and chairs into the room and made it a play area. It was one of my favorite places in the house!

Shay,
My best suggestion? I saw this on pinterest (of course)! You trash & recycling chutes to the garage (you basically install them in your backsplash, and have 2 chutes (on pinterest they are stainless steel chutes), but it could be any color or type of surface. This way- all your trash & recycling go straight out to your garage & then you can just roll it out to the street. It eliminates having to keep trash in your kitchen & having to haul it out to the garage. Seems easy enough if it works with the layout of your house 🙂 Good luck building!!!

I would say the kitchen is one of the most important rooms, if not THE most important. So it has to be perfect! I think double ovens are a must, especially for someone like you who bakes a lot. You can have a bundt cake in one, and dinner in the other. And they're really great for holidays and other big meals.
I also love the cabinets that have drawers that slide out. It makes it so much easier to put stuff away and get things from the back of the cabinet. Have fun picking out everything for the new house!

I would say take as many pictures as possible throughout the building process. They are not only fun to have to see the progress, but if you need to do any work later on you know where studs, electrical, and plumbing is. It could help in the future!
Also, get as many outlets as you can! Think about where you will set things up: Christmas lights outside, Christmas tree, outlets in the pantry, in the drawers in your bathroom to disguise straighter and blowdryer. There is NO end!

In the cabinet which holds your stand mixer put a adjustable shelf that will swing out and bring your mixer to cabinet height for use and then can swing back down for storage. PS- Being from Boston I must share the fun thing some of our friends have done with their finished basements/ playrooms/ mancaves. There is a paint by Benjamin Moore (I believe) called "Green Monster" and they paint at least one wall in said room this color. A couple of suggestions regarding electrical outlets. One in the kitchen recess your outlet boxes into the wall, that way when you plug something in you don;t have to worry about it protruding on to the counter. Add extra outlets outside to plug your Christmas lights into, makes decorating a whole lot easier! Add a central vac system, if you can and even if you can't still put the coundit in for the runs and you can always add it later. Think about your furniture and make sure your walls are big enough in certain rooms, for example the dining room. I am sure I have more but this will get you started! Have fun building!

Hey! I think you should totally do a pantry like Pioneer Woman… she has a counter in there where she stores appliances that she doesn't want on the counter. 🙂
JESSICA says
LOTS of outlets in the kitchen…on the island, in appropriate places where you plan to plug in mixers, food processors, coffee makers, etc. Same for the bathroom.
I have always said that I would get a built-in fan in the walls next to the sinks in the bathrooms because I hate to get hot when I blow dry my hair. You wouldn't have to worry about that so much since you are a natural hair gal, but it's a great added perk for sure.
Also, if building a guest room, make sure it's downstairs with a bathroom because older guests don't like going upstairs. (Grandma made sure to tell me that one. LOL.)
I am also a fan of the garage, or space where you plan to park your cars, being the closest thing to the kitchen. A) Nothing is worse than walking through an entire house 13 times bringing groceries in, and B) If something ever spills, it's easy clean-up.
Last thing (promise!) – if you have a half bath downstairs, keep it away from the kitchen because ummm…ya. Need I explain? 😉
Hope the house is everything you want plus some!
Thanks for the opportunity to win!

Hi Shay,
I've read a lot of the comments, but not all, so I hope I'm not repeating anyone.
My dad owns a lumber company and my parents used to have their own construction business where they focused on building residential homes. With that being said, my parents have built two of our families homes. With building your own home you'd think that you would be fully satisfied, however this doesn't ring true. My mom never seems to be fully satisfied with any home that we have lived in or our family home now. She is always saying "In our next house I'd do…" I guess that's part of the builder/decorator in her 🙂
My best advice would be to do what's best for you now, but also think of the future. Think of your kids growing up and possibly needing more space. My sister and I (when home) share a bathroom, but it has a vanity with two sinks. It also has a separate shower and toilet room that is just simply closed off by a door. This was great, especially in high school, one of us could be taking a shower while the other was blow drying their hair.
Also, I don't know how cold it gets in Texas, but here in MA it gets pretty chilly in the winter. If it gets cold there for a decent amount of time I would recommend radiant floor heating, it's AMAZING!! I definitely miss it when I'm at school.
My dad also used the radiant heat coils, or something similar, under the concrete of our patio to have the pool water run through. It acts as a pool heater. The water circulates through the coils in the patio which is warmed by the hot sun, and then re-enters the pool. It's a great little trick to have a warm pool on not such a warm day 🙂
One last thing, how did you become a Red Sox fan? I was just wondering, so if you don't have the time to answer I completely understand.
Hope this helps!
Best of luck,
~Kacey

My best tip is to make sure your kitchen cabinets roll out and get all the hardwood you can while building. Also, make sure that you customize your closets while you are building. First let me say, Kuddos to you and all the irons you have in the fire! I have always been a planner so prior to building, I tried to do my "homework." Here's what I came up with.
1.If possible, face the home away from the West/Southwest most bad weather comes from that direction.
2.If it's 2-story, keep in mind that if you line up room such as Kitchens, baths, laundry rooms, over each other, it will cost you less in plumbing cost because it will be faster(less man hours) and fewer materials when they aren't chasing hook-ups.
3.Roof-lines that are significantly complex will add THOUSANDS of dollars with limited return (except for looks), maybe there's a roof line that will fit your requirements for appearance and may be considerably cheaper than a simliar roof-line
4.Never too many outlets, use dimmer switches (they're not costly and they give many options to your lighting needs and mood)
5.If your contractor will allow it, buy your own materials (If he'll provide you a list and if you can communicate ahead of time and know what's coming up you can SAVE significantly-why give money away? You won't be paying him to run around and you can purchase on eBay Lowes or Home Depot 10% off coupons and use those each time, it saves thousands!
I'm full of ideas, but the space is limited. Lastly, STICK TO THE PLANS, once you decide on House plans, agree to NO changes, they will cost you dearly unnecessarily!
Best Wishes & God Bless- Michelle P

I know I am behind in entering the contest but I still wanted to give my two cents as both my parents and husband's parents have built custom homes.
While things may look great on the blueprint visually put yourself in the room and 'walk around'. Are there enough electrical outlets where you will need them? Will doors, cabinets, etc. open up the right or correct way or will scones or lighting fixtures get in the way with these? From what I have heard it is the small things like these that often cause the hiccups at the end.
Jaci says
Even though I missed the contest here is my advice:
Put your laundry room or a second washer/dryer on the same level as the bedrooms.
Add an extra shower head (for front and back) in the kids shower. When our kids were little, we had them shower together and then both had water hitting them!
If you are having hard wood floors and plan on putting down a rug, consider doing an inlay of carpet. It won't curl up on the edges and looks nicely finished.
REgarding moving: We rented a semi trailer for our stuff instead of a storage unit. It was way cheaper and we only had to pack/unload one time. We stored the semi trailer on a relatives farm and kept out the essentials and when we were ready to move, we had it backed up to the new garage.
