I recently bought these Christmas plates and mugs to use this holiday season and they are ADORABLE! My mom saw them and immediately wanted them too.
Set of four plates, all different scenes.
Set of four mugs, all different scenes.
I am showing you these today because I have a feeling you’re going to see 4,000 pictures of my family eating off of the plates and drinking cocoa out of the mugs come December and they’ll be out of stock…so, you might want to snag them now.
The plates are big enough to eat dinner off of and the mugs are the PERFECT size for coffee, tea or hot chocolate. They are soooooo cute!!
***One last thing before I get to today’s recipe…on Monday, I had a very yucky and harmful area removed from the middle of my back. I am currently sporting a very long incision with dozens of stitches that is extremely painful and will leave a very nasty scar…this is the fourth area I’ve had removed from my back in the last 10 years…all because between the ages of 18 and 22, I thought it was cool to visit tanning beds. Shame. On. Me.
I have since wised up and spent the last decade really trying to live a very healthy life…but the damage I did as a dumb teenager is affecting me today. If you are not protecting your skin and especially if you’re lying in tanning beds, I beg you to stop. I took a picture of my back but Andrew said it was too graphic to blog…listen friends, it’s ugly. It’s dangerous. It can kill you. Stop doing it.
That’s my PSA for your Friday…take care of your skin and get skin checks regularly at the dermatologist! I never would have seen this spot in the center of my back…I had to go in for a skin check with my dermatologist and she found it (thankfully). This is super dangerous stuff and I wish someone would have gotten in my face about it 15 years ago and told me I was stupid for doing it.***
Alrightly…on to dinner…
…tonight, it’s my Tex-Mex Chicken Pot Pie.
It’s a pot pie with a Tex-Mex flair. Perfect for your weekend!
Happy Friday friends!!!

Great post, and I love those plates and mugs! Thank you for being honest about your scare and procedure at the dermatologist! I, too, went to the tanning bed in high school and regret it. This was a good reminder for me to schedule my skin check (a few months overdue)!

Wow! Thanks for the info about your back. It makes me want to get my skin checked out! Love the Christmas plates .

?? oh shay, even though the photo of your back would probably make me throw up, my 19yo daughter needs to see it. she is gorgeous and works at a tanning salon and tans. she ignores the warnings of myself and her 25yo sister who works at the center for reconstructive and plastic surgery and sees the reality of what tanning beds do. they promote skin care as well. thank you for your psa! my other daughter {25yo twin} tans as well.

Love your favorites. The kiddos are just adorable, your scarves are fabulous,,,but more importantly I'm glad you are ok. I don't even know why tanning salons are even still operating!!!!

Thanks Shay! I am currently recovering from a procedure on my back. No fun! I am 26 and this is my 2nd time on my back. I make sure to go in every year. I worked at a tanning salon in high school. If only I would have known then, what I know now! I too, encourage everyone to get checked out regularly!

I love those plates, but I love your PSA more. My mom was diagnosed with stage IV melanoma almost five years ago, and it is something that we all think about every single day. And we did have our time in the tanning beds. Sun safety and skin care is so important to me – not from a vanity perspective, but from a health perspective. It is serious! Praying that the results are clear and that you don't have to have anymore procedures. Xoxo

Crate and Barrel always has super cute mugs and plates, too. I love the matching child size! There were some cute ones left in the outlet online that have a vintage like truck with a tree tied to the top.

Shay, how do you get the glow that you have today? Im scared of tanning beds but im also pretty scary so white! ? Can you recommend an alternative?
Anonymous says
preach, girl, preach! I am in the exact same boat. Thought that visiting tanning beds to achieve that summer glow was wise in my younger days, and have paid for it dearly. I have massive scars all over my stomach/abdomen from having cancerous tissue removed. Tanning beds should be illegal because their primary customers are young women. Everyone, regardless of whether you've used tanning beds or not, get an annual skin check from a dermatologist!!

Love the cute pics of the kids and love, love the plates and mugs. Thanks for the PSA. I did the tanning beds in my youth and could kick myself especially since my dad passed away of Melanoma so very soon after his diagnosis. He was only 59 when he passed. I go every year sometimes more if my doctor is keeping any eye on something. Praying that you have good news. Take a picture once the healing process starts and post it world wide! People need to see what can happen!

Thanks for sharing your experience, it makes me want to get my back checked as well.
One of my clients is a medical spa and the dermatologist there gave me some great sun care tips.
She said that sunscreen is the last thing that you should put on your face before foundation and that it needs to be separate from your moisturizer/foundation. Don't get something that is mixed in.
You want to use at least SPF 30 and your sunscreen should have either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as one of the ingredients to be the most effective.
I recently did UV photography and got to see all of the sun damage on my face and as someone who is a stickler for sunscreen and not laying out, I was surprised at the damage that is already there.

Shay,
What did the areas on your back look like? Did they look like moles or were they just spots? This definitely makes me want to go in to the dermatologist!

Praying you are okay!

Happy Friday Shay! Happy (early) birthday too!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge/experience with tanning beds and skin care. I hope your readers/fans see this and take action.
I get yearly skin checks and use sunscreen daily.
Enjoy your weekend.

Great PSA Shay! Praying that you heal quickly. I love the plates and mugs. Too cute! Every year I add a couple of new things to our holiday decor. I think the plates and mugs will be something I add this year. Thanks for the recommendation. 🙂

Hi Shay! I'm so sorry about your procedure. I just got one taken off my arm this fall and have a huge scar too. I'm a sunscreen convert now!
I know you loved the Zara plaid blanket scarf (that's all over pinterest) as much as I did, and I missed it too. But American Eagle just put up blanket scarves, and in the "buff" color it's an almost exact match for the Zara one! They're 25% off and free shipping with the code NEWVIBES. Just thought I'd share in case this makes your morning like it made mine :). Happy Friday!

Shay, kudos to you for such an important reminder … I literally just looked up a new dermatologist in my network, booked an appointment for 11/20, and am so thankful to you for giving me the little push I needed. I also tanned from time to time in college and about two or three years afterwards. I cringe when I see photos of that orange skin now.
We'd love to have you link up with us sometime at Five on Friday if you are interested! 🙂 Happy Friday!

I had a spot that was found on my face about 6 years ago…had I not gone in for a checkup I would have just thought it was a new mole/freckle coming up. Thank goodness for my doctor who found it and cut it out. And that was on my FACE! Stop using TANNING BEDS is what I tell everyone now!
Jamie Ross says
Those plates are adorable. I want to get some asap. 🙂 And that scarf is so cute!
Lastly, A big Thank you for the PSA about skin care. I use to go to the tanning salon in High School and I really regret it. I need to definitely see a dermatologist. Thank you for your compassion, Shay!
Sara Laverty says
Yes! Great PSA!! I go to my derm couple times a year for skin checks and after hearing about my various stitches and biopsies on my back and tummy it pushed my dad to go see a derm as well. THANK THE LORD HE DID! My dad just got his stitches of his skin graft out yesterday – thankfully the cancer was caught early and he's on the mend. You can't talk about taking care of your skin too much! You never know who it might help — in addition to yourself! Happy Friday – hope you get to feeling better!!!
Lana says
I hope that your back heals up quickly. Thank you SO much for sharing this with us. I get my skin checked every year, and the last two years my doctor has had to remove a few suspicious moles. Very scary, but when caught early, that's the end of treatment. Hope you have a wonderful weekend and feel better!!
Jaclyn Johnson says
Hi Shay! Great post today, I hope your back is feeling better really soon and I'm so happy that your doctor found the spot so that you could get it taken care of. Have a blessed weekend!
The Bryan Family says
Thank you for sharing! I agree get regular checks!!! I had one of my students find out she had cancer from removing one of her moles and she died within two years at the age of 17. It is serious – do not tan and protect your skin with sunscreen. Have a great weekend.

That is the perfect Fall polish!
Of course I love seeing photos of those sweet kiddos of yours! Love the monkey on Smith's back 🙂
Hope you are feeling better after your procedure! I can completely relate to over using the tanning bed in my early years 🙁 I have stayed away for about 10 years now and I think my skin and body are thanking me for it! Great PSA!
And now I need to head over to Pottery Barn and get those plates and mugs! Oh my do I love them!
Have a great weekend Shay!

If you think it is too graphic to show your incision at this point, you could consider showing it after it has healed more. A visual does help get the point across!

I tanned all through high school because it was required for my dance team. Ugh. Is that even legal? Anyway, I haven't tanned since my early college years but I can't keep myself from missing my tanned glow! Do you have any products you recommend for a sunless tan?
Courtney says
Thank you for the PSA! But so sorry to hear about your minor surgery. My husband had melanoma at age 32 and has continued to have basal cell carcinomas about once a year. So. NOT. Worth IT! Thankfully, he has a wonderful wife now that makes sure he wears his sunscreen when he's out and about 😉 But, I unfortunately was among the stupid teenagers that went to the tanning bed. So dumb. Could a 2-week tan be worth your life? NEVER.
Courtney Cammarano says
I disagree with Andrew. I think a harsh reality can be very effective at getting people to understand the real damage and very real risk they are taking when they get in a tanning bed or don't use sunscreen. My darling step-daughter believed for years that the UV rays from the tanning beds were "healthier" than exposure to the sun. My head nearly exploded when she tried to convince me of this "fact" (that she learned, no doubt, at the tanning salon). As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words and I do hope you reconsider. If it helps drive the message home to just one person it would be worth it.
Good for you for getting regular checks and getting it taken care of. Hope you heal quickly!
Robyn says
I almost NEVER comment on blogs, but your PSA made me want to. Thank you so much for sharing such an important message. I too have had some yucky experiences at the dermatologist in the last few years and I feel for you! Hoping you have a quick recovery and keep up the regular skin checks!

Keep those PSAs going! We know way too much now about the impact of sun/tanning beds that it just makes no sense. I'm a redhead who did terrible damage in junior high. I still have scars on my chest and shoulders. Sunscreen. Hats. Long sleeves. Sometimes I don't look cute, but I don't want skin cancer.
Ladies, go to the dermatologist and get checked!

I spent decades in a tanning bed and now I am also dealing with the effects and it is not pretty. I had melanoma on the back of my leg right were the bottom of my bathing suit would have been. Lucky for me it was caught and removed and has not spread to my lymph nodes. I have horrible scars all over my back for what seamed a 100 basal cell skin cancers that were removed. All of this had to be done in a hospital so this is a long surgical procedure. The problem is they do very wide dissections so they will have clear margins. This surgery took 6 hours since they consult with pathology to make sure every lesion is not malignant. At the time I used tanning beds there were no warnings of the skin damage. I simply do not understand how anyone can still be using these beds since the consequence could be death if it is not caught. My melanoma had gone thru all the layers of my skin so it is a miracle it did not spread to my lymph nodes. I know pay my dermatologist's mortgage since I spend far too much time in his office! His name is Dr Peter Hino at Presby if you are looking for a good dermatologist. He has been voted "Top Doc" in D Magazine the past several reasons.

I just turned 40, never went to tanning beds, but grew up in Arizona, so I was exposed to mostly sunny weather my entire life. In May I had a basal cell carcinoma removed from the side of my nose during one surgery & a skin graft taken from my neck to cover the hole in a second surgery, not fun! Everybody says it looks great, but the graft is healing a bit puckered. The plastic surgeon that did the graft said after a year of healing (bc that's how long it takes for grafts/scars to heal) we can talk about some options to help, or redo the graft! I honestly think I'll just leave it bc I don't want to go through that process again. There were stitches holding the graft on, then on top of that a large, ball of a netting type dressing was sewn in, with more stitches, on the top of the graft to protect it. It felt strange & itched a lot, & was just bothersome!
So, great psa for your readers! Having skin cancer, especially on your face, is not fun at all!!! Though I'm very blessed it wasn't bigger, or melanoma, which can be deadly!
🙂 Rebecca

I will think of you when I set them out! 🙂 Great minds think alike 😉 And thank you for your reminder about getting skin checks – I'm overdue!

Thank you SO much for your PSA! Young girls NEED to see and hear it. My son in law is being treated right now for Stage 4 Melanoma. Skin Cancer is a beast. Tanning Beds should be illegal for under 18 and over 18 should have to watch a video on skin cancer and the amount of damage and deaths that it causes.
