A Day in the Life of Poppy

Today, I’m talking about my dog.  If you’re a dog lover, you’ll be excited, if not…come back tomorrow ;).

The other day, I briefly mentioned Poppy and many, many, many of you had questions about our dog, wanted to see more pictures of our dog, you didn’t know we had a dog…let’s put it this way, I received a lot of dog comments and/or emails.

Quick Facts about Poppy:
1. She’s a Coton de Tulear.
2. She’ll be three in April.
3. She’s small (about 10 pounds).
4. She’s really sweet and super friendly.
5. She has decided that she’s Andrew’s dog and follows him everywhere.

Since so many of you wanted more Poppy pictures, I decided to do a Day in the Life of Poppy

Andrew’s up at 4:15 each morning, I’m up at 4:20 and Poppy is up at 4:25.  She’s waiting for us to get our coffee and then to let her outside to potty.

As soon as she pottys, she comes straight to my office and lays on the floor by my chair while I work.

Around 6:20, when I go to the kitchen to get the kids’ breakfast together, she always goes and sleeps on the back of the couch.  Andrew doesn’t let her on the furniture (which she and I both  know) but…I really don’t care what she does as long as she’s being quiet (let’s all hope Andrew doesn’t see this…).

This is where Smith sits each morning while he’s watching TV and waking up…she can hear Smith talking in the kitchen, so she’s waiting on him.

Andrew gets home from the gym (we all pretend like she’s never been on the furniture…she scampers off quickly when she hears the back door open) and he feeds her breakfast (or Kensington does…they take turns).

And then Poppy heads to her favorite spot…under my bed.  This is where she stays 95% of the time that she’s at home.

Andrew takes Poppy to work with him every single day.  He’s been doing it since she was a puppy, and they both love it.  Each morning, she hops in his car and off they go.

Poppy lays on this little pillow under his desk all day.  When clients and staff members come in and out, she just stays there quietly.  Clients never know there’s a dog under there.  There are perks to owning your own business…and bringing your dog to work every day is apparently one of them :).

Occasionally, she’ll come out for some fetch…

…or to chew on a bone.

Kensington ran out to greet them after work.  (FYI: I was yelling at Kensington to get in the house as I took this picture.  It was 20 degrees and she’s barefoot and in short sleeves!).

Poppy comes in and says hello to everyone.

She’s walking to her spot under the bed.

As I’m making dinner, she brings me her dragon for fetch.

Now, she’s listening to me tell her that I can’t play fetch now, I’m cooking dinner.

It’s 9:50 and she’s looking at me still awake saying “come on mom, isn’t it time for bed?”.
And so, we head to bed.  Her under the bed, of course :).
That’s it!  That’s our Poppy Popsicle.  She lives the most exciting life ;).  For exercise, Andrew either walks her or he rides his bike and she jogs next to him on one of those dog jogger pole things (you know, you attach the leash to it and it to the bike).  I didn’t document exercise pictures because it was too cold for me outside!
Hope you got enough Poppy today!

  • Erika Slaughter February 18, 2015 at 11:36 am

That is hilarious!! It's like an unspoken rule. Love it! Hope Andrew stays away from the blog today. πŸ˜‰

  • kelly February 18, 2015 at 12:27 pm

My sister has been BEGGing me to make her some white chocolate macadamian bars…so I'm going to make those tonight! I can't wait to try those. Love, your biggest "bar" fan ; )

  • Meggie February 18, 2015 at 12:50 pm

So cute! She seems like the sweetest little dog. We have a miniature schnauzer who we love and who is definitely part of the fam… But she isn't as sweet as Poppy. She would be asked to leave a place of business I'm afraid. Ha!

  • Polka Dot Blossom February 18, 2015 at 1:10 pm

The furniture secret is the best. Hilarious!

What a cutie and she seems to be a great family dog!
On a side note I was wondering what type of hardwood floor you have?
I love the color and it looks great.
    Please share. πŸ™‚

  • Jaren February 18, 2015 at 1:37 pm

Love that she goes to work with him! She's such a cute dog, and if I were a dog person, I'd want one as cute as her!

  • Tracy February 18, 2015 at 1:45 pm

Poppy is adorable! I don't know why I thought she was an older dog. She looks like a sweetie. How is Ashby doing with her? I think you mentioned once that she was scared of her. Hope they've become fast friends. πŸ™‚

  • Heather Forcey February 18, 2015 at 1:50 pm

I busted up laughing at all of you pretending not to let Poppy on the furniture! Too funny! Cute dog! We have that same dragon, but my dog destroyed it.

  • Miranda February 18, 2015 at 1:53 pm

Please tell me where you got that shirt from? Also a sizing reference?! Thanks!

  • Haley Southey February 18, 2015 at 1:57 pm

  • Kelly @ The OK Momma February 18, 2015 at 3:02 pm

Oh to live the lives our dogs lead!

  • Lauren February 18, 2015 at 3:48 pm

    1. What do you do with Poppy when you travel? I hope your dog sitter is used to your pup's early wake up time πŸ™‚

    2. I know you mentioned that you have never watched Modern Family. You have to at least watch the episode when Phil gets his car wrapped with an ad for his real estate biz. Seeing Andrew's wrapped car in the garage has me giggling just thinking about it.

  • Liz February 18, 2015 at 4:03 pm

I love how you pretend Poppy hasn't been up on the furniture! I do the sAme thing eith my cat when he sits on the table to look out the window. Gross I know but whoam I to take away the one thing that truly makes him happy. Poppy is so adorable!

  • Hannah Hardy February 18, 2015 at 4:16 pm

We have a Coton too and sounds like yours is very similar to ours! Ours also loves spending majority of her time under our bed, sitting on the back of our couch, and follows me around in the mornings.

  • Darcy February 18, 2015 at 4:24 pm

What a fun post! Our little Border Collie Leo loves sleeping under our bed too. πŸ™‚

  • Tara Smith February 18, 2015 at 4:53 pm

I'm so glad you did a Poppy post! She's a doll!

  • Whitney @ Work it Mommy February 18, 2015 at 5:15 pm

Love it ALL- my dog decided she was husband's dog, too! I'm not bitter or anything… If only she could go to work with him her life would be made. Then again I wouldn't get any exercise because walking the dog is my exercise πŸ˜‰ Poppy is too cute!

  • Unknown February 18, 2015 at 11:24 am

We own our business and had a 55 lb lab mix in the store with us for 11 years before she died. Now we have two cats so I totally get it!

  • Cheryl February 18, 2015 at 5:39 pm

Shay, we have the same breed of dog. Looking at Poppy is like looking at Charlie. Charlie is so sweet and loving. Definetely has attached to me.

  • The Nelson Happenings February 18, 2015 at 11:58 am

    Poppy is adorable !

  • Kelly February 18, 2015 at 6:30 pm

I love this post! As an avid dog lover and mommy to two goldens, I think I will do my own post one day about their (boring) lives. My favorite part of your post was the furniture. Hilarious!

  • Lindsay February 18, 2015 at 6:36 pm

    Now I need a dog!

  • Aubrey February 18, 2015 at 8:02 pm

Without a doubt the first time I've ever seen a day in the life about a dog. Hilarious! πŸ˜€

  • Amanda @ EA Guide to Life February 18, 2015 at 3:12 pm

Cutie! My Sampson has that same dragon. We play with it all. the. time.

  • 4sweetboys1princess February 18, 2015 at 9:49 pm

I love the part about the furniture. Our Silky Terrier thinks that my husband does not want him on our bed (he really doesn't care)so as soon as the front door shuts in the morning he jumps on the bed to sleep by me, if the door opens again (husband forgot something) he quickly jumps off the bed and acts like he was never up there. He cracks me up.

  • Jordan February 18, 2015 at 9:56 pm

This is the best post ever! πŸ™‚

  • Jeanie February 18, 2015 at 11:46 pm

Poppy is adorable! I'm glad you let her get on the furniture. πŸ™‚ I love dogs and have three of them: a cocker mix, a shih tzu and a labradoodle. They own this house but let me stay here.

  • klmoore23 February 19, 2015 at 2:54 am

Hi shay, love the post about how dog crazy you guys are too. Just curious as to how Nieman Marcus bars got their name?

  • graywolff February 19, 2015 at 5:52 am

( I bet you never lose your car in the mall parking lot)

  • sarah mcclanahan February 20, 2015 at 4:45 am

What a cute post this was πŸ™‚

  • Jennie Benke February 22, 2015 at 3:27 am

What a sweetie! I had a Maltese who Poppy sure reminded me of! Her fave spots were on the back of the couch (which we also pretended didn't happen) and under the bed!
