Another day, another vacation post 🙂 . I’m almost done! Just one more after this one.
We spent some glorious post-Christmas days in Colorado, and if you missed my first post (Days 1 & 2), click HERE or the second post (Days 3 & 4), click HERE.
Today…the lazy days of days five and six.
Day five was New Year’s Day…or as we say in our family, Grandmother’s birthday 🙂 . After we called and wished my precious grandmother a happy birthday, the boys went off to snowboard that morning and the girls stayed behind to do a whole lot of chilling out. It was perrrrfect!
Around noon, the girls all went to the mountain to have lunch with the boys on the base (and bring them home). I’m wearing that Patagonia sweater from this fall. It’s so cozy and comes in many colors! And that beanie is still 40% off 🙂 .
We were ready for chili. I’m pretty sure we had chili for lunch every.single.day. It was just so good up there!
After lunch, we decided to walk back to downtown Aspen and see what was up.
Ashby found these earmuffs at a store…and we all knew she was meant to have them 🙂 .
Loving spending the first day of the year with this guy.
We stopped for hot chocolate…
…those dimples…
…and I had something called a sticky chai latte…and it was divine.
Just a bunch of Shulls strolling Aspen.
Later that night, we had dinner at The Monarch Steakhouse…and it was our favorite meal of the trip!
Not the best pic…but I wanted you to see the fireplace behind us. We had a lovely table, great service and wonderful steak! We all had steak except for the two littles who split lobster carbonara instead. I sampled that, and it was delish too!
A cozy steak dinner hit the spot!
And one family pic before we called it a night.
The next morning, the boys headed off to snowboard again while we stayed inside and cuddled.
This girl slept in her earmuffs. Hahahahahaha!
At 11:00, I took the girls and we headed to Snowmass for lunch and tubing!! This was Madeley and Ashby’s first time on the gondola. They thought it was so much fun!
She was loving the gondola!
First stop, lunch at the top of the mountain.
This kid was having the best time ever!
We took the magic carpet up to the tubing spot.
There were four lanes of FUN!
Little Miss Madeley wasn’t tall enough to tube, so she played with me in the snow instead.
Here comes Smith!
Ashby did it a few times with Kensington and then decided playing in the snow sounded like more fun.
We had the best time outdoors with our crew!
Here comes Kensington!
Snow fun in-between tubing.
Ah! I love this picture so much!! My sweet girls 🙂 .
Later that night, we cleaned up and enjoyed our last night in Aspen at the Kitchen…
…ahhhh! It was a good day 🙂 .
After dinner, we headed back to our Airbnb, packed up and went to sleep…because the next day, we were heading to Breckenridge to meet up with the Slaughters! #yesyesyesyes

Tubing looks so fun, love the photos! 🙂 I’ve only done it once and in an artificial winter slide place (it doesn’t snow where I live) but I wish I could do it again!

I have loved reading all your Colorado posts. It’s getting me so excited for our trip. We leave Monday to go to Winter Park and cannot wait. It looks like y’all had the best time. We plan to try tubing this year.

Your blog posts about this trip are making me want to go to Colorado! I have never been, and don’t really skii, although my husband loves it so I would be willing to give it a try again! Maybe we will plan a trip next winter. It seems like so much fun there!

Random question, where do you buy sheets for your sleep number bed? I just bought the bed and they tried to say I need their sheets! Is that where you buy yours? Sorry to be off topic, wasn’t sure where else to ask you. Your trip looks amazing!
Mix and Match Mama says
As long as you don’t get a Sleep Number with a divided middle, you can put any sheets on it. Ours is the i10 and we use whatever sheets we want.

I’m with the girls… I sleep in ear muffs when I’m cold too… & it helps with a new puppy in the house 😉 haha

Love reading about all of your adventures! Its so nice that you get to share these experiences with your family and that your kiddos will have tons of great memories with their Mom and Dad! Random question about travel..when walking a ton and dealing with keeping track of your little ones, what suggestions do you have for a crossbody/money belt/ fanny pack (insert eye roll from my teenagers here! haha). I have been using a basic LeSportSac crossbody, but it seems to swing, rub and snag on any cute tops im wearing. Any suggestions for something that will keep my hands free, hold everything I need AND still look cute?

For me, it depends on where we are and what I’m carrying. Typically, if we’re overseas, Andrew carries everything on him because I would rather not be responsible for having that important stuff on my body.

Hi! Were you pleased with your condo? Do you have a preference of vrbo over airbnb? Looking to do that with our family of 6 next winter. Thanks in advance!
Mix and Match Mama says
We’ve only used Airbnb, and we have always loved it. We really liked this one! No complaints!

Oh my gosh!!! So much fun!! I’m texting my mom right now…. We may have to go next year for Christmas or NYE!

Love your white ski jacket! What brand and where from please! Thank you!! 🙂

Well, this was just delightful! Snow tubing looks like so much fun (skiing terrifies me!), maybe I will get up the nerve to try it. And, your restaurant choices looked so good! The Shulls really know how to do vacation!
Kimberly says
I went snow tubing at Olympic Park when I went to Utah for a competition in college — soooo much fun! Looks like you all had a great time — especially Smith ? Can’t wait to see what Breckenridge looks like! Your trip photos aren’t doing anything to curb my desire to go to Colorado! ?

Would love to hear your tips on dining out with young children. How did you get them used to it, do you use any entertainment for them, etc.
Mix and Match Mama says
I wish I had some groundbreaking tips…they color, they talk to us, sometimes, they use our phones. I really believe that practice makes perfect in these kinds of situations. Of course, they have meltdowns, but my kiddos are older now, so it’s really pretty easy.
Lauren says
I need to know all of the secrets to eating out with your crew! I have 2 littles and eating out is somewhat dicey for us. Your kids seem to go out all the time and always look happy. Can you share your tips and tricks?! Please and thank you 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
I really think it’s because my kids are older and have had practice. I really don’t have any magic tips. I wish I did!!
Dania says
I love Chai!! I was in Colorado the week before you and had a Chocolate Chai for the first time-so good! But I don’t know what a Sticky Chai is-can you explain?
Mix and Match Mama says
It had honey in it and was delish!

Love to see our favorite Spring Break location featured. Next time you’re in town you have to have lunch at The White House Tavern. So Yummy. Also, Snowmass has Ullr nights on Friday nights. They open the gondola to the base of Elk Camp. There’s s’mores, open bar, snacks, snow bikes for the Little’s and tubing for the older kids. The ride down the gondola is spectacular at night.
Mix and Match Mama says
We tried to get reservations there but never could. The menu looked so good!!
April A says
Love this post the most! It looks like this was truly such a fun family vacation!! The pic of you and Ashby after she slept in her earmuffs…. precious!!! I loved it!! And Smith, can he be any cuter??? It almost looks like he has a few freckles!!!

Because this was your first time skiing I would love to pick your brain (or you do a blog) about the do’s and don’t. We are planning a trip to Red River, NM in February. I have two boys 4 and 6 and none of us (including my husband) have been skiing. I am trying to decide if we need to do lessons every day or just the first 2 days. Tips regarding ski gear? Group vs private lessons for adults etc.
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh! I grew up going to Red River every December!! You’ll love it!! I’m no expert…but I thought everyone learned more in private lessons. I would also think you need at least two full days. Have fun!
Taylor says
Hey Shay! I love reading about your vacations and all the fun places to do! I had a question: when traveling with littles (or even in general) how do you teach them to go out to fancy restaurants? When did you start going out to eat at nice places with your kids? We have a 17 month old and we take her out every now and then but it’s a challenge! I don’t like using phones to distract her so I try to bring small toys and books but it only helps for 5-10 minutes. Do you have any tips/tricks for this? Thanks in advance!
Mix and Match Mama says
We started when they were babies. Please know, they’re not always perfect…it’s much easier now that everyone is older. When my first two were babies, we didn’t have iPhones (way back in the stone age. ha!), so we did what you’re doing…brought small toys, books and such. They just learned over time how to behave at the table.
