Happy, happy Wednesday, friends!
Before we start, I have to say WOWZERS to all of the comments yesterday!! I am so absolutely thrilled that you ladies wanted to conquer May with me. It was really inspiring!! If you haven’t checked out that post, make sure you do because I’m giving away a super cute Barrington tote as well! That giveaway ends tomorrow morning, so head there NOW!!
Today, I’m talking all about my new Apple Watch 3.
Now, if you’re new around here, let me go back a minute…I am the LAST person on the planet who needs an Apple Watch. Like seriously, I am so technologically inept that if I can fall in love with one, you can too. Like for real, I still call Siri “Suri” (because I am more versed on pop culture and Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ child than I am on talking to my Apple devices).
Two years ago, I bought myself an Apple Watch and Andrew legit told me that I wouldn’t know how to work it…because he knows me THAT WELL, but friends, it changed my life!!
You can read all about why I love my Apple Watch so much HERE. The reasons are all still the same, but the only difference now is that they’ve tweaked this baby a bit since then. Last year, they came out with…
…the Apple Watch Series 2 and I sold my first one to a friend and bought that one instead because…IT WAS WATERPROOF!
I mean…I basically never take it off 🙂 . You can read all about my love of the Apple Watch 2 HERE.
So, I had heard about the Apple Watch Series 3, and was contemplating another upgrade, when I received an email from Apple telling me I could trade in my 2 for a 3 and get $125 credit applied to the upgrade. I took the email and went to my local Apple Store to check them out and friends…just when I thought this silly watch couldn’t get any better…
…it did because the 3 has cellular on it.
Yes.
That’s right.
I can now use my watch a part from my phone to make calls, texts and search the internet with Siri (not Suri).
(If you have no clue what I’m talking about at this point, refer back to my post on the first Apple Watch HERE!)
So, the first two Apple watches needed to be near-ish your phone in order to make/receive phone calls and/or texts along with using Pandora and other internet based apps. So, at home, I could talk on my watch and such with my phone downstairs in my purse, but the minute I set out to walk the dog, etc., I could no longer do that. With the three, if you call your cellphone carrier and add the watch to your existing plan, then you can use it independently from your phone (it was $10 a month for me to add mine to my plan).
So, here are some examples of things I do with my watch without my phone:
1: I walk the dogs, go for runs, bike rides, etc without my phone every single day. I don’t bring my phone because I don’t want to carry one extra thing and I also don’t want to be bothered with it while I’m out and about. BUT, I’ve always been a little nervous because what if I have an emergency? What if I fall and get hurt? What if (God forbid) the dogs get hit by a car? What if I get attacked by a dog OR PERSON? I am out by myself with no phone. Now, I can use my watch. I can call and/or text without having to have my phone out and about with me. Also, what if there is an emergency at home that I need to return for? No one could reach me either…but now, they can.
2: I can listen to Pandora and other things like that without my phone. I hook my watch up to my wireless headphones and bam! I’m out running and listening to Pandora without having to bring my phone along.
3: I can use apps to pay for things with my watch. We live near a Starbucks, so I’m always walking/running/biking over there and now, I can just open the Starbucks app on my watch to pay for drinks and such without having to have my phone or wallet. You can also use things like Apple Pay and other apps to make charges with your watch.
4: If I hop in my car to go pick up my kids, run an errand or whatnot, I don’t necessarily need to bring my phone…if I need to make/receive a call/text while I’m out, I can do so.
A few other random tidbits:
1: If you look back, my first watch was “gold”, my second watch was “rose gold” and now my third one is also called “gold”…but it looks rose gold to me. I even held up my new one with my old one that day at the Apple store and they looked pretty identical, but the Series 3 is called “gold” even though it looks pink (especially compared to my first one!).
2: I did not like the band that my Series 3 came with, so I immediately bought a new one from the Apple Store and switched it out. I wanted the 42mm gold watch and unfortunately for me, I didn’t love the band (the color or the material), so I just paid for a new band and swapped it out.
3: Speaking of bands, I always buy my bands at the Apple store. I bought one two years ago on Amazon because it was less expensive and it broke the first day I wore it. Thankfully, I found my watch face on my rug in the living room, but what if I’d been out and about when it broke? After that, I decided just to stick to bands sold at the Apple store.
I mean, I’m sure there are many, many, many other things I can do with my watch now that I couldn’t before…but let me remind you, I’m technologically challenged, so I’m learning them more slowly 🙂 .
So, I keep upgrading because they keep making it better. First, it became waterproof and now, it’s independent from my phone (and still waterproof!). Like seriously, what’s next? Will the Apple Watch 4 be able to fold my laundry? I mean…how can they top the three????
Now, I told you guys on Monday that I spontaneously decided to declare this giveaway week…which means today…
…I’m giving one lucky winner an APPLE WATCH 3!

Bethany Skobel says
A Barrington tote AND an Apple Watch in the same week? Wahooooo!!!!
Kerri says
Please note that you have to put the watch in “waterproof” mode before you it is waterproof. It is not just waterproof all the time. My husband and I both have one, but he upgraded when they first came out so he didn’t have any mishaps at the lake. The worst part is the remembering to change it to waterproof mode. As a teacher I couldn’t live without mine, since we aren’t allowed to have our phones out at school. I’m not a techy person ata ll.
Mix and Match Mama says
I never have! I don’t know if that’s accurate info or if you guys just got duds. I’ve always just gotten in the water and they work just fine.
Missy B says
I agree… mine is waterproof. The water drop button blows the water out of the speaker when you are done, but I rarely bother with it.
Sheri says
I had no idea there was a waterproof button!! I wear mine in the shower every day…..no problems yet…..:)
Laura V. says

Nicole says
I purchased my Apple watch after your last review. I wear it every day and love it, especially feeling like I can “disconnect” (physically) from my phone, without missing any important/emergent texts/calls as I’m able to quickly look at my watch. Still in awe at all the watch can do! Thank you for your time in the upgrade review.
KRE says
I enjoy your reviews on the watch. It helped me decide on getting last year. Are you concerned at all about having a cellular device attached to you all day? That is one of the reasons I won’t upgrade from my series 2 watch.
Mix and Match Mama says
You can switch it off easily! So, you can switch it off and then turn it right back on in like one second.
Connie says
Guess it doesn’t take a picture, does it?
Kylie says
Love the review! I have the original Apple Watch and am definitely hoping to upgrade soon. Really like that the new one is cellular too! 🙂
Allie says
That would be amazing!!!!

Sara Oliver says
Love my Apple Watch. I just love everything Apple. So easy to use. Can’t imagine life without them. The timer is one of the best features.
Carolyn says
There was just a story on GMA about a girl who was wearing an Apple Watch and it suddenly showed her heart rate at 190 beats!! She was an active young lady so she was surprised. She went to the ER and they diagnosed her with Kidney disease. She said if she wasn’t wearing a watch she would never have known her heart rate was so high or that she had kidney problems because she felt fine otherwise.
Molly Bierens says
Love my Apple Watch!! I have the 2 now and love that its waterproof. It would be great to have the cellular service on the watch so I don’t need to have my phone on me. 🙂
lilly says

Susanne says
Wow! What an awesome giveaway. I’m the same way technologically! ?
Chrystianne says
I DESPERATELY need a new Apple Watch!! I have the first one and the battery life on it is tragic (dead by dinner time, which is when I do most of my running around in the kitchen). It is also really slow, especially in sending messages, which defeats the whole purpose of having it. I won’t win this giveaway though because I never win anything haha. How is the battery life on this new one Shay?
Laci says
I would LOVE to upgrade my watch from a Series 1 to a 3! Waterproof and Pandora through my watch would make running so much easier!!
Shawna says
Fingers crossed! I love your blog!
Michelle says
Oh wow! What a giveaway, so exciting for whoever wins it!
Claire Andrade says
I think I would love an Apple Watch but I worry that I will then never wear my nice Kate Spade and Coach watches (that weren’t cheap either!) How do you handle it? Do you still wear your nice “traditional” watches?
Mix and Match Mama says
I do when I go places that are “nice”, but when I”m home, I have my watch on 24/7 and most of the time when I leave, I keep it on and don’t switch.
carly says
Omg I love this! I currently have a Fitbit but have been eyeing the Apple Watch for a little.
Wendy says
I sold my series 1 and got the series 3 for Christmas…where has it been all my life! I LOVE it.
Skimama says
“Will the Apple Watch 4 be able to fold my laundry?” Bwaahaahaa. I would pay a million dollars for that!!
Lisa says
I purchased my Apple Watch after your first review of yours. After reading this I think it might be time for an upgrade!!! Thanks for sharing! Can you share your favorite pandora stations? I can never find a good “going for a walk” station!
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m so lame. For walking, I either do praise and worship music (if I’m feelin’ spiritual) or like the Justin Timberlake or Taylor Swift stations.
Abby says
I can’t get my Apple Watch 3 to play pandora. Any tips?
Mix and Match Mama says
Do you have the app set up correctly on your phone? Do you need to do an update?
Marina says
I still have the very first one and it works so well, except the battery! How long does the battery last on the series 3?
Mix and Match Mama says
I can go two days without charging it!!!
Lisa says
I was debating an Apple watch, you have sold me!
Amanda @ That Inspired Chick says
I still have the first series watch and all of the things it does now are things I knew it would eventually do! I should have waited. I barely use it anymore. Maybe time to upgrade!

Shannon Gerard says
An Apple Watch would be so amazing!! I am a new mom going back to work Monday (baby is 3mo) and I know I won’t be able to have my phone on me all the time. An Apple Watch would truly be such a comfort and life saver!
Jennie says
This almost makes me want to switch from Samsung to Apple! Almost! LOL
Winnie says
Just entered! The Apple watch would be a perfect Mother’s Day gift for myself.
Patty says
I’m technologically challenged, too, but married to a nerd. Challenge accepted in learning to use an Apple Watch! Wouldn’t he be surprised if I could do it, too?
Kathy says
Thanks for the giveaway! I have a series 2 watch which I LOVE. I didn’t think I needed to upgrade, but now, maybe…..?
As for bands, I think you must have gotten a lemon. I have purchased at least 4 bands from Amazon, and they’ve been great. No problems at all. And they’re WAY cheaper than Apple, so I can switch them up when I feel like it.
Have a great day!
vivian thoma says
Morning Shay. Yesterday I was out shopping and stopped in Ulta to see if I could find the eyelash curler that you use. However, I couldn’t recall the brand. The wonderful staff tried to help but without the brand name we didn’t have any luck.. I came home and looked through your past posts but couldn’t find it Could you please let me know the brand of your eyelash curler.
Thanks so much
Viv
Mix and Match Mama says
Laura Mercier! It’s the BEST!!
Lindsay says
I also bought mine after your last review and I love it! Quick question – I have been thinking about buying wireless headphones. Could you recommend what you are using? Did you buy the air pods? Thanks!
Kerry says
I have the Apple Airpods and they are life changing. They are expensive for earbuds but I love mine. So easy to use and like everything else Apple…they just work!
Angela Ellingson says
Ahh! I want an apple watch so badly! It doesn’t ever quite make the cut in the budget though. 😉 Love when you do these reviews!
Jaime says
Silly question – but how do you get the temperature (degrees) to show on your modular screen? Is it an app? The only weather I can view is the umbrella with the percentage chance of rain!
Mix and Match Mama says
You go into the Watch app on your iPhone and from there, you move those things around.
Meg says
Oh my goodness, I was just reading through your Apple Watch reviews yesterday because I was thinking of asking for one for Mother’s Day and my birthday ?. So glad to hear you like the new one just as much and so sweet of you to offer a giveaway!!!! Now for the 4….you need to be able to just say “Siri, fold the laundry”, “Siri feed the dog”, “Siri, clean the house” ?
Mix and Match Mama says
Hahahahahaha!
Cathy Carter says
I got the Apple Watch 2 because of your last review! Hoping to win the giveaway for the 3, but if not , I’ll be making a trip to the Apple store to upgrade!!!! So excited!!

Mix and Match Mama says
Not this year. I love those girls though!!
Emily says
What wireless headphones do you use? I am having a hard time finding a good pair.
Mix and Match Mama says
I should know the name…but I don’t. I don’t think they’re fancy…because I wouldn’t know what to do with fancy. Hahahaha!
Meg says
I love my skull candy ones ?
Leslie says
Susan Williams’ comment yesterday about walking more and loosing 20 lbs. after reading your 2nd Apple watch post really has resonated with me. I’ve been shopping for a fitness tracker watch because I need to stay more active and your post and readers’ comments have convinced me I “need!” an Apple watch. I’ll keep you posted on the 20 lbs!
Mix and Match Mama says
Good luck!! Seriously, keep me posted!
Amy says
Did your watch come with the yellow band, or did you have to purchase that separately….I love that color!!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I purchased it separately!

I keep contemplating an Apple watch from your reviews! I actually went back and read your MacBook post when I switched couple of years ago to Mac for some tips and tricks for the everyday user like us! 🙂 The 3 series might be what makes me finally go for the Apple watch!!

Michelle Reiter says
I have been eyeing an apple watch and have read all of your reviews in preparation haha!

I look forward to reading your blog every morning, its part of my morning quiet time routine :). I have been wanting to get an Apple watch since reading your first post on why you love yours! Unfortunately, being new home owners, pursuing a masters degree, & having a 2 year old and newborn due any day now means the Apple watch is not high on my husband & I’s priority list. Keeping my fingers crossed!!
Ana Espindola says
I. AM. SO. EXCITED. FOR. THIS. I loved your first review! I was contemplating the purchase but I think this post is a sign I need to bite the bullet and finally get one!

DANIELLE K RIGG says
I heard on the TODAY Show this morning, that a women had her Apple Watch on at church. Her blood pressure went through the roof. It alerted her to seek medical attention right away. Which then did, turns out her kidneys with failing her. She said the apple watch saved her life and this feature she did not know it even had. She is trying to get her story out so more know about it. AMAZING what technology can to do help us.
Jen says
Thank you so much for this post! The second you explained it’s untethered I thought of if this could be used for my mom, who lives alone, as a fall alert sort of device? I’ve been looking into home alert systems but none seem like the type she would actually wear, plus their range is limited to home. She doesn’t have an iPhone so I’m wondering if I can add the watch to my iPhone and then turn off all the incoming alerts so she can just use it for outgoing calls? Will definitely investigate.
Michelle says
This is so great! I’m in the process of becoming a foster mom and this watch could be a lifesaver! Thank you!
Becca Maddigan says
Great post!!! I have been looking at the Apple Watch 3! I have the first one and it’s the Only thing that keeps me motivated to be consistently active! Since those three little rings are what I use it for the majority of the time it was hard for me to justify buying a new one but you make it sound like a dream!!
Jennifer Ward says

Soon to be mom and I’ve been thinking I need an Apple Watch so I don’t have to hold my phone or keep track of it. Fingers crossed!
Teri says
So SAD that the Apple Watch competition is only for US residents ? I am so DESPERATE for an Apple Watch but can’t afford one. Been eyeing one out for months as I do quiet a bit of running and would love to monitor my heart rate and mileage. I also struggle anxiety after having Myocharditis when I was 18 – the heart rate monitor feature would be something of great interest to me about the watch as well.
I follow your blog and wonderful family all the way from South Africa – you are such an inspiration to me and the family I want to stArt having with my wonderful husband soon, God willing.
Keep well Shay and keep up the wonderful blog
Ellen Perine says
Thank you for sharing your views on the Apple 3 watch. It is confusing to me and I take what you say to be the truth! After reading your posts on the Kendall this past December I ordered one. I love it! I need an Apple watch to help monitor my health. I need to Bri g my weight and blood pressure down.
Colleen says
What a fun giveaway! I have been debating getting an Apple Watch for awhile now and your reviews push me closer. My question is probably silly, but when you talk on the “phone” with your watch, do you just talk? Or do you wear earbuds? If you just talk, do people seem to be able to hear you okay? I would love that feature because keeping up with my phone and a bunch of littles is nearly impossible!! Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s actually a really good question! Yes, you just “talk”. Easy as that!
Christyna Stuart says
How kind of you!! So funny that i saw this post because I just lost my apple watch yesterday. I was driving a rental car while my car was getting fixed and left it in there. And…. it’s gone! I love your yellow band btw!

This is amazing!!! My fingers, toes, arms, and legs are crossed! I went back and forth for about a month on whether or not to get an Apple Watch, and decided against it because of price. Samantha says
Hi! I was wondering, what size is the face of your apple watch 3? Is it the 38mm or 42mm? thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
42mm!
Beth says
You have great taste! I’ve noticed that very few of your outfits include your Apple Watch. I would love to see more pictures of how your wear it in everyday life. There are two or three pictures of you wearing it with bracelets. Could you do more in the future?
Rachel says
I’m a new mom and now feel like I have to have an apple watch! My friend has the 42mm as well and her only complaint is that she has a small wrist and has a hard time finding watch bands that fit. What has been your experience on this?
Mix and Match Mama says
All of the Apple bands fit me! Most of them, come with two bottom bands (s/m and l/xl).
Donna says
Thanks so much for the in-depth review of the I phone 3. I have been trying to figure out a good way to carry my cell phone when I have my grandkids because I need my hands free and this is perfect. When I say I love my watches, I really do! I have close to 20! I currently have the Fossil smart watch and love it, and never thought of getting an Apple Watch. Hey Shay! LOVE your blog… just wanted to give you a heads up that I bought a 3rd gen Apple Watch for my husband after reading your reviews. He LOVES it but I thought it may be worth mentioning ( you may have already discovered) that Pandora has removes their app from the Apple Watch as of mid April and will not be updating for now.
Pandora streaming away from phone was a huge plus in my mind… so just passing along if you want to update post!

I read you May goals and this blog post and thought you may like an app i recently discovered. You can keep track of your water throughout the day. I love it so much the timer lost its spot on my watch face now. :-p You can enter the water your drink in through the watch and see a progress bar right on the face of the watch. I also have four kiddos and its a nice reminder to drink water throughout the day.

I know I am late on this post, but just now catching up….Do you use a screen protector on your Apple Watch? I just got one and already have a scratch on it 🙁 Curious if this is something I should look into, but I’m wondering if it will feel bulky on the tiny watch.
Mix and Match Mama says
I do not. I don’t think any of my watch faces have ever been scratched. They seem very durable.

The face on my Apple Watch got a scratch too. I ordered a screen protector from Amazon and you can’t even tell it’s on there!

Oh my goodness! Did I miss the announcement?
