It’s May!!!
Smith, May 2017
This is how I feel right now. Ha!
I just love May!
I love May like I love September…it’s the beginning of a fun season and you just see, smell, and taste all the possibilities out there in front of you.
Ashby, May 2017
This May, I’m going to try something different though and was kind of hoping you would jump on board with me. I made a list of some healthy/good for me things that I’m going to try and do EVERY DAY IN MAY. I thought it might be nice to go into the summer already doing some “good for me things”, so that maybe the routine will stick during the season.
Kensington, May 2017
I do a lot of “good for me things” most days…but not every day, and this month, I’m going to try and do them EVERY SINGLE DAY. So, here’s my list, but I thought maybe you guys could elaborate a bit more in case I need to add something to it…and I’m going to try to do these things EVERY DAY IN MAY. I am also doing a fun little giveaway today and then throughout the month, I’ll do a few more to keep us motivated. Fun? Maybe? I love stuff like this 🙂 .
Madeley, May 2017
Here we go.
May 2017
Every Day in May, I am going to do these things and maybe you can too…
1: DRINK MORE WATER
I am starting with an easy one. But right? I drink a ton of water…but sometimes, in the summer, I find myself drinking a lot of tea by the pool instead or I just find myself so busy having fun, that I’m not drinking anything at all. I did not grow up in a house where we drank water. We drank Diet Coke. Like all the time. Like morning, noon and night. I stopped drinking sodas a few years ago (I had a major Diet Root Beer addiction, is that weird?), and I do drink a lot of water, but this May, I’m going to drink even more so that by summer, it’s a habit that comes so naturally to me…even when I’m busy having fun.
2: SLEEP MORE
Guys! I had this on my list already, but then on Wednesday night, we were watching TV after the kids were in bed, and Andrew paused it and said to me, “I’m so glad you’re sleeping more, it has made a huge difference.” Hahahaha! I mean…how bad was it before that he notices now?! In January, I vowed to not wake up before 5:00 AM and that was SO HARD FOR ME, but has been HUGE FOR ME!! I mean…it’s only 45 minutes of extra sleep a night, but friends, IT IS ADDING UP!!! I love, love, love waking up early and getting things done. Truth be told, I’m addicted to it, but just like many addictions, it became unhealthy for me. I had been waking up prior to 5:00 AM since college (because I liked to hit the gym before my 8:00 classes), so this was a habit of like 18 years that I had to break…AND IT HAS BEEN AMAZING! I did not even realize that I was walking around exhausted until I stopped walking around exhausted. I have so much more energy, I feel like my skin looks better, my eyes are brighter (seriously, I didn’t realize how red they were before…but they’re brighter now!), and my husband has obviously noticed. So, in May, I’m going to try and even get a bit more sleep. I think my goal will be to go to bed earlier and if I can’t, then sleep in a bit more. Even if it’s just an extra 15 or 20 minutes, I now see how crucial it is to get enough sleep, so I’m going to work on that even more this month.
3: READ ONE MORE BOOK
Hi, my name is Shay and I love to read. I was always a reader, but then I stopped (hello, having small kids at home and being too overwhelmed to read!) and never read. In June 2014, I made a goal to read two books that one month and I have never looked back. This month, I’m going to try and squeeze one more book in. If you’re not currently reading, then maybe your goal is to read just one book this month. Or if you typically read one, aim for two. The more I read, the less I watch TV, aimlessly scroll my phone, and you know…waste time doing nothing. So, I’m working to get one extra book in this month.
4: SPEND MORE TIME OUTSIDE
I think I’ve said this before, but I’m always telling my kids they need to “earn their shower” each night. If my kids are basically clean when it’s shower time, then what did they do all day??? I like it when we all “earn our showers” meaning we play hard, have fun, get sweaty, a little dirty and are outside every day. This month, my goal is to spend time outside every day. Maybe I’ll work outside? Maybe I’ll plant my vegetable garden, go for a walk, play with the dogs? I’m just going to do something outdoors every day.
5: ADD MORE STEPS
Oh, I love looking at how many steps I take each day on my Apple Watch. I am always striving for 15,000 steps a day. Some days, I get 17,000 and other days, I get 7500. Hahaha! What happens on those other days? Seriously, my week toggles back and forth between HUGE days and then days that are like 10,000 less than the day before. This month, my goal is to take 15,000 every single day. If that means, I go for an extra walk after dinner, then so be it. If you’re a step counter like me, then set a goal and try to achieve it every day.
6: WORKOUT EVERY DAY
Ouch. I typically work out 4 to 5 days a week (skipping Thursdays and Sundays), but my goal this month is to do some form of exercise (a class, yoga, walk, run, life weights, etc) every day in May. This one is going to be the hardest for me because I’m a master at talking myself out of working out 😉 . Every day in May, I’m going to try. Eeeeks!
7: EAT ONE EXTRA VEGGIE
I really try and eat enough fruits and veggies every day…but I’m better some days than others, so this month, I’m just going to make a conscious effort to eat one more than normal. Maybe I add something extra to my eggs in the morning? Maybe I have bell pepper with my hummus instead of pita chips for lunch…I’m just going to try and sneak in one more veggie every day.
8: SPEND EXTRA TIME IN PRAYER/MEDITATION
I try and always start my day with my quiet time. (You can read about that HERE.) If you’re not a daily quiet time person, then I encourage you to try every day in May (or do what you do…maybe you meditate). This month, I’m just going to try to spend a little longer doing my quiet time (maybe doing it more than once a day?). Nothing puts my perspective back into focus more than spending a few quiet moments with the Lord.
9: WHERE SUNSCREEN EVERY DAY
Right? Because that’s a habit that should start NOW and carry us through the summer. I’m really good at putting it on in the morning…but then I forget to reapply. Hello? By 3:00 PM when I’m outside with my kids after school, I should have more on! I need to remember to be reapplying throughout the day.
10: PUT MY PHONE DOWN EARLIER AT NIGHT
So, my goal this month is to put my phone down, plug it in, turn it on vibrate by 9:00 every night. I mean…I could accomplish so many more of the above (read more, sleep more, pray more, etc) if I wasn’t preoccupied with my phone. I’m putting it away and not looking at it again until morning.
So, what are you going to try and do every day in May? I can add to my list!! I would just love to be doing some things daily and be in the habit and routine before summer starts. What else can we be doing????
And last but not least, did you hear me mention a giveaway at the beginning of this post?! Nothing puts me in a “let’s conquer the season” mood more than…
…a bright monogrammed Barrington Bag.
Erika was laughing at me the other day because I told her that when I’m stuck on hold, I often go to their website and aimlessly design a new bag. Just for fun. Not to buy.
These bags are just so cheery and happy and it’s so fun to design one!
So, today, I’m giving one away. You can pick either the St. Anne tote or the Savannah tote.
A new bag, new daily motivation, a new month…the possibilities are endless, friends.
One lucky winner will be announced on Thursday! Enter to win below!
Okay, three more things.
First, Erika asked me to join her in a Instagram challenge this month where you take a pic every day based on these prompts…

Second, tomorrow, I’m announcing the winners of this…
…so if you haven’t been to yesterday’s post, head there now!! You have one more day to enter to win.

Wow, I love waking up to a motivating post! I feel the same way about May, it’s my favorite month of the year for many reasons. My goal this month is to try and be more present and enjoy the people and the scenery around me. Happy first day of May!
Dana says
I love this! And I have no idea if it exists in the US because my search engines are different here, but Bioderma tinted sunscreen 50+ is amazing! It’s only 10 euros here, but is hands-down the best sunscreen/foundation I’ve ever used. It’s worth searching for!
Erika Slaughter says
Eeek!!!! What a FUN way to start May!! And if the winner needs design help, you’re there. Right? 😉
Ashlie says
Love this! In May it is so easy to push yourself aside because it’s the end of the school year and quite busy! I highlighted a few of your goals and I am going to strive to do them each day! Thanks Shay!
Nicole says
Love this!! Happy May! Have you tried Athleta’s new shorts?? Do you like them? If so, which ones? Thanks!!
Elspeth Mizner says
What a great list of things to accomplish! I’m gonn try to do them as well! Thanks for the tips
Maregaret says
I am going to try to do many of your suggestions! Wishing us both luck! Happy May.
Jess B says
Love this post! I’ve been trying to add a new healthy habits every month this year, trying to pile up the healthy habits so they stick. I’ve been feeling like I’m coming out of the baby fog of 4 kids in 5 1/2 years and I’m ready to start feeling better and caring more intentionally for my precious family. God’s given me this healthy body and sweet family, I’d like to be a good steward of both.
Jordan McCaskey says
I love this idea!! One of my goals this month is to create a nightly routine. I’m horrible about taking my makeup off before bed!
Laura says
Fun! My sister just told me about this app called Strides that tracks your habits. It would be SO helpful to you keeping up with all these goals 🙂
Tara Hall says
I am with you! I love a list like this! Something I have tried to do in 2018 is spend 15 minutes in prayer. I set the timer on my phone for 15 minutes & pray. I jot down things i am praying for in a little notebook which keeps me focused! It has made a huge impact – and has become a habit 🙂 I call it my #daily15
Lesley McFarland says
These are alll so great!! Thanks for sharing. I’m sooo ready for summer and it’s just around the corner!!!
Sarah says
I love this idea!!! Thinking off the top of my head, I’d like my challenges to be working out every day, using my phone less (WAY less..love this one!!), and writing every single day. I’m a blogger too, but I’ve been in “maintenance mode” for quite a while haha and need to get some serious motivation!!
Thanks for the encouragement!!! Best of luck on your goals! 🙂

I am working really hard to better myself. I often pour everything I have into my family, but I started last month. I deserve it too!
Susan Williams says
Just a little encouragment for everyone on the whole exercise/steps one: I bought an Apple Watch a year ago b/c Shay 🙂 loves hers so much and was determined to walk 10,000 steps every day this past year. I’VE LOST 20 POUNDS this year from that one small change. I’m on board with you this May for all of these – thanks Shay!
Mix and Match Mama says
No way?!?! That is incredible!!!! Way to go, Susan!!!
Sheaffer Sims says
Okay, I know me…and I know there is no way I’m doing all these things. But I will make the following my goals: drink more water, eat an extra fruit or veggie, and design 1 Barrington bag a day. 😉 What? That last one wasn’t a goal? Well, it is now.
Kara says
Thanks for keeping it real Sheaffer 🙂
Sarah N says
I’ve started Juicing and I LOVE it! I have waaaay more energy, my brain fog is clearer and they have now become a healthy craving for me ? if you’ve never tried juicing, this could be a great way to get in those extra veggies. Seriously – I’ve been doing this for only 2 weeks and the results are stunning.
Kellyann Rohr says
I love those totes!
Kelly Sites says
I’ve been trying to drink 1/2 my body weight in oz of water each day…..and I can really see a difference. I have more energy (not sure why….but hey, I’m glad) and my skin looks so much better. Thankfully I love water, so it’s not a big deal, all I needed was to be more intentional. And I started doing a daily arm workout (10 min) (you tube videos) each day, and Yoga (you tube videos- Sara Beth Yoga) 5x a week.
Linda says
Where did you find the daily arm workout?
Brooke Richardson says
Hahah! I love going to their site and designing bags too! Lots of great ways to take care of yourself, love it!
Meg says
I absolutely LOVE all of your goals! My favorite day of the month is the 1st because I feel like it is a new start! 🙂 Because of you I always try to write down small goals for the month. Also love the totes! I am moving to Savannah and could use a new big tote for the beach. Thank you for sharing!!
Rachel says
I too gave up Diet Coke years ago. White I’m not a fan of plain water. So every morning I squeeze 1/2 lime, a large wedge of an orange, and a hunk of fresh peeled ginger into my water bottle. Add ice and then water. It is so refreshing. I just keep adding water during the day (I’m a teacher) and the flavor stays! I especially love the added zip from the ginger and I hear it’s a good digestive thing too.
Bethany Skobel says
What a sweet giveaway! I would love to have a Barrington tote for the summer! All of your goals are awesome 🙂
Lisa D says
I have made some goals for May as well….. Walk daily now that the weather is warming up in Colorado, stop nagging my husband about his weight (this is going to be a hard one, I’m just being honest!), more water, more veggies, less carbs. I’m not as ambitious as you MandMMama!
Amber says
Wow! What a great way to start my day with such an inspirational post! EEEEk I would just die if I won a tote-I’ve been wanting one forever, but can’t make myself take the plunge!! Fingers crossed! I love your list Shay-you have some great goals on there! I need to drink more water and also exercise more-can we add put more hours into the day! LOL! May is exciting because it’s the start of summer! Makes my heart so happy! 🙂
Dianna says
Well, I already read your blog every weekday so this will be a good reminder of the daily goals! When you said “good for me things” to do “every day in May” I immediately thought I should try and workout (even if it’s small) every day this month! It’s funny to me that it was listed on your goals too, it just reaffirms what I thought. I am happy to play along with these goals, especially the working out, daily steps (I’ll keep mine at 10k since I have a desk job), and water. I’m already very serious about putting my phone down by 8, and even want to eliminate more of my screen exposure.
My extra goal will be more time with screens OFF including TV’s, tablets, computers, and phones. To be done during meals, during work, in the evenings, etc.
Ramona says
That’s a great idea, hmmm, have to think about my goals. Love the totes! How fun are those?!
Angela Ellingson says
What a great way to start my day/month!!! Thank you for always inspiring me! I’m going to join you for those goals every day! And the Instagram photo challenge, too. So fun!
Alexis deZayas says
Totally doing this with you!! What a good idea! I’m also going to try to do something good for my skin every day- whether it’s a face mask, putting on body lotion one more time during the day, etc. And I’ve been dying to try out a Barrington bag! So fun!
Kelly says
I think May is my new favorite month. It felt like winter was especially long here in the Northeast. And, I like nothing better for a new month than an inspirational post;). Thanks for all the great ideas, Shay!
Melissa says
All great ideas! I’m jumping on board with all of them.
Chelsea says
Everyday in May I want to read a book in place of tv or mindless social media scrolling. I should probably join in on the water part too ?
Amber Vance says
I love that you tell your kids to earn their showers! I’ll be using this one. 🙂
Julie says
I love your ideas!! One of mine is speaking an affirmation to my kids daily. This world is hard and they need to hear positive encouragement every day!! Just small things like telling them they look extra beautiful today or thank them for putting their dishes in the sink or praise them for a good test score. Just small things that i think will make a big difference in their overall emotional health. We can all use a little more positiveness in our lives right?!
MelanieL says
Yay for May! I’m in Indy where the month of May is INSANE with my son’s birthday, Mother’s Day, The Indianapolis 500, graduations, baseball, etc. I always feel like I’m drowning so maybe a good list to keep me on track is just what I need. I love your list!
Ashley T. says
Another snack idea for adding an extra veggie is red bell pepper and guacamole! So yummy!
Lynn Winter says
I need to just break down and get one of the bags. they are so cute.
Alice says
Great ideas!
I have started putting my phone away from my bed! I usually have it on my nightstand but I kept reaching for it and checking it one more time (over and over) so I leave the volume on in case of emergencies, but leave it where I have to get up to get it. It has been so helpful and I have been going to sleep around 10pm the last few nights. Praise hands!!!
SS says
Shay!!!
We must’ve been on the same wave length. I was just telling kiddo I need you to up my steps on my fit bit. Now that we have entered spring I want to try to get more steps too. I had a little bit lower level in the winter and want to increase it since we can be out now! I was also thinking I was doing a good job of using their water “chart” when I first signed in, but I need to put it in more. I just started doing a 30 day beach challenge from internet… only takes a few mins… but hey better than nothing. We have been trying to add more fruits and veggies too..(actually talking to an organic community share farmer right now). Reading is a little tough… but I am going to conquer my bin of printed pix and get those organized. I can do that while kiddos are playing outside!!! YAY!!!
Oh… we love photo challenges. Kiddos all have cameras (not phones…real cameras or tablets) so we all participate. Before we go on trips I try to make our own photo challenge. LOL!!!
Happy May!!!
Casey says
Love this so much!! Last night I was talking with my husband about how we both needed to get a little “selfish” in a good way and start taking better care of ourselves! More sleep is definitely in my list! Just slowing down, being more present with my kids. Getting back to better organization. I used to be so organized and it’s gone by the way side which causes major anxiety for me! Thanks for the great post!
Doreen says
Great list of goals that I am going to work on too!! Love the totes.
Sarah Parsons says
I love a month of goals! I am going to join in on the earn your shower goal, read another book, drink more water, and add a veggie. I already exercise every day. Today is day 486 of my run streak (1 mile or more per day). I think I am going to join Sheaffer’s goal to design a bag a day too, and maybe finally buy my first one! 🙂
Beth Jensen says
Those totes are adorable! I love a fellow list maker. I have my seasonal “bucket” list on my fridge and live by it. I have added spring cleaning, a box a day to my list and need to work on better sleep regimen for myself.
Brea says
At the beginning of the year I started doing monthly goals too, and to help track them I started doing a habit tracker. I basically just make a chart with about 6 trackable goals and a box for each day of the month, and each day before I go to bed I put a dot in the box for each habit I completed. It’s actually kind of fun, and great for accountability too!
Molly Kathleen Bierens says
Love these ideas!! In addition to several of these suggestions I am going to try to journal everyday. I love being able to go back and look at how God has worked in my life.
Janet Teeter says
Shay, have you tried La Croix sparkling water? They are a great way to boost water intake, and the flavors are very subtle. They also, are a great substitute for soda!
Debbie Carr says
Love your list. Water is in mine and organizing – this bag would really help with that! Enjoy this beautiful month!
mary says
Can you give me tips on 15,000 steps a day? I work 8 hours and drive to work 45 min each way. I walk about an hour 3 days a week but on those days I can only get 12,000 steps. I want more:)
Mix and Match Mama says
Girl! 12,000 sounds like a ton for all you do!!! I’m impressed!
Rebekah Dill says
Oh man. I’ve been wanting a Barrington tote for 727262618 years now!!! Ahhh fingers crossed! Such a fun May Day giveaway Shay 🙂
Also, those are great goals for the month! My goals include: drink more water, only eat out on weekends (cook more veggies during the week), finish a book, listen to one episode of the pregnancy podcast everyday, spend time with Jesus everyday, start getting nursery put together for our first baby due in July!!!
Happy May 1!!!
Amanda @ That Inspired Chick says
Love your list! I need to take better care of myself and quit putting everything else ahead of me. Maybe today is the day to start! 🙂 That Inspired Chick
Gracie Van Dhke says
Totally just wrote all of these down to follow along!! A couple of them are things I’ve been trying to do anyways (drink more water, workout everyday, daily quiet time) for 2018 and the others are just really good ideas! Thanks for being an encouragement even to those you don’t know 🙂
Gracie Van Dyke says
And by Van Dhke, I meant Van Dyke ?
Andrea koehler says
I love the everyday in May idea… I’m a Diet Coke addict, so drink more water is a good one. Also, i too sometimes design a barrington bag and save it to my Pinterest board just for fun?
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s so fun, right?!
Susy says
Spend less. Asking self if each purchase is really necessary.
Susy says
Perhaps the wording is spend more intentionally. Is it really needed? Or does the purchase enhance our lives in a needed way.
Lauren Reid says
May 1st is always an exciting time of year, being from the North it is definitely a time of weather change (for the better!!) This post has inspired me to create a goals list for myself especially since summer is approaching. Thanks for some of the ideas, Shay! Happy first of May!
Carrie says
Such good May ideas here!
kellie carrara says
All these sound like excellent suggestions…I will play along too!! (as I sip MORE water!)
Thanks for the chance to win a Barrington tote! I’ve wanted one for the longest time…
Now, if only it was warm up here in Boston… (41 when I got up at 545 am but we’re looking for some 60s today!) I’m ready for pool weather N.O.W! 🙂 Happy May Day!
Sarah says
LOVE this idea, it is so relatable! I can improve on every aspect, especially applying sunscreen more regularly. Such a great idea going into summer with a healthy body and mind! 🙂
Linda Filtzkowski says
My goal for May has been to give up the Diet Coke and drink more water so this is great!!! Love all of your ideas. My only addition would be to be kind to someone each day on purpose(smile and say hello, hold a door, any little thing). That is a challenge I gave my 9th grade CCD students this year and have tried to keep up.
Heather says
What a great list. We all need more self-care! Also, it should be “wear” sunscreen :)!!! Love your blog!
GAIL says
These are all great!. Mine is to actually TAKE all the vitamins I bought and not have them languish on the kitchen counter. Missed today’s already so not a great start!
Regarding ditching your iPhone at night, I set mine to go into ‘Night Shift’ mode at 5:00pm. No blue light and it is SO much easier on the eyes. I have a super hard time falling asleep, so I actually put my phone away by 7:00pm. It’s tough, but I figure if someone needs to reach me, they can text my husband (who can drink caffeine/watch TV till 11:00pm and still fall asleep as soon as he hits the pillow – so jealous of that!!
Susan Roberts says
Thanks for including a plug for daily sunscreen! May is Melanoma Awareness Month!
Barbara Parnell says
Definitely plant a garden!! This has been one of the greatest things I’ve ever done for myself and my family. My kids love to help, theyve learned so much and we eat fresh, delicious food! I just posted today about growing garlic…if you are interested check out my blog for the post(or my IG @parnellspantry)..it is so easy and the kids will enjoy helping you! Good luck with all your other goals…but if you do plant the garden, you will eat another veggie, drink water because you’ll be thirsty, exercise because it’s physical work and get to spend quality time outside either with the family or alone! It’s a win either way!!

I loved this post! It was so cheery and inspiring :p Kensington’s dress is gorgeous, where is it from? and Smith’s pose is awesome!
Stacey Schoelich says
Gorgeous totes! I love how you can see how they look before ordering. We apparently have the same initials and I hate traditional monograms because the two S’s together bug me for some reason. I need the balance of SLS haha
Emily R says
I cute idea if you want to do something in the financial neck of the woods…Share.Save.Spend. You can even get the kids involved on their own as well. You can set aside a dollar amount (or even change) per day per person. Each kid decides if they are going to put it in their share, save or spend jar each day. At the end of the month, you all can decide what charity to give the money to from the share jar, the kiddos can decide to put their cash in a savings account from the save jar and/or they can decide what they want to buy at the end of the month with everything they put in the spend jar. Also could eat out one less night of the week and put the money you saved aside for something special you’ve been wanting to buy at the end of the month…
Lauren Barnett says
AHHH! I LOVE the barrington tote, but can never convince myself to buy one! I am totally going to join the photo challenge. Sounds so fun for the end of my school year!
Lane says
Shay you have been so encouraging in the getting up early arena! I feel like I am always staying up too late though! What times would you say you are shooting for now for bed and wake up times? Thank you!
Mix and Match Mama says
I am going to shoot for like 9:50. I typically end up going to bed around 10:15ish, so that would buy me almost 30 extra minutes!
Kristal Strong says
I’m sure you’ve said this in the past & ive probably even read it before, but what’s your favorite sunscreen to use for yourself & your kids?
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m really into Supergoop these days!
Julie says
I.LOVE.THIS.LIST. I’m in real estate and it has been so very busy lately. I realized the other day how much I’ve let my personal care go…meditation, exercise, water, sleep! I was just going to use the first day of May as an opportunity to re-focus and add as much self care back in as I can. So thanks for providing the extra motivation, and for giving us all the sense that we’re not in it alone :). One thing I’m also going to work on is listening more to my kids (8, 10, 12). I realize so much of the time, I’m just nodding and saying, “oh yeah?” and “really!” and there’s only so long they’ll actually want to talk to their mom. So this month, I’m trying to work on being more present with them too. Enjoy Spring!
Patty says
I love your goals…all realistic! One of my goals is to be more intentional about prayer on a regular basis. Does anyone have any ideas of how to be consistent? I’ve tried prayer journals and keeping a list in my phone…with minimal success. I pray often throughout the day but want to do so even more. Also, as much as I would like to turn my phone off at night (and look at it less throughout the day), now that we’ve given up our house phone I don’t feel that’s a realistic goal. We have a daughter and son-in-law serving with an engineering ministry in Cambodia, so I want to them to be able to reach me anytime, day or night if they need to. I do set it so only my family can reach me at night between 10pm and 8am, though, so that helps.
Lorie says
I got a Barrington tote last summer (because you and Shaeffer told me to!) and I just love it!! Have you tried the Stadium Crossbody bag? I was wondering how you would design that size bag? Love the May Challenge…I’m in!
Jennifer says
I love this so much. I really miss your monthly goal posts – they were always so challenging and thought-provoking. It always made me assess how I was spending my own time and what I could/should do to be a better version of myself. I know as your blog, businesses, and family grows you have so much less time to give, but I love these kinds of posts you do the best of all. I always leave your little corner of the internet with a little more spring in my step and a can-do attitude. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

I love this idea and love those totes!!! Yey for May!!

I love this post! I have a lot of the same goals that you have, and whats a better time to start than now? Also, the water thing is so hard for me. I do not know why and I feel so much better when I drink plenty of water, but that is something I need to work on. This post helps motivate me to set some goals for myself, even if they are small they will pay off in the long run!

Have you seen the new Erin Condren life planners yet?!? Ordering mine today!! 🙂

Love all your ideas for Every Day in May! I’ve been drinking 1/2 my body weight in water for the past month and it is awesome how much it makes you feel better physically and mentally! I am going to be more intentional with God and spend more time in prayer daily. I’m also going to do something physical every day, and get more steps in! I love the Barrington bags–just haven’t convinced myself to purchase one yet. The designs you created for you two bags are so good!

Shay, another great idea is to put your phone on airplane mode at night. My mom actually makes a point to do this for at least 30 minutes each day (to read, nap, etc.) It will not notify you at all unless someone on your favorites is calling you- that way if there’s an emergency, they are still able to reach you, but all your emails/texts/other notifications will literally be on hold until you take it off of airplane mode. It’s very refreshing because you know you are out of pocket, and aren’t tempted to see if you have any texts or make a call. Great ideas! I need to drink more water, and I definitely need more sleep. I have a teething 9 month old, so I’m sure you can imagine how rough that can be. 🙂 I also think it’s good to treat yourself. For me, I love getting a manicure and/or pedicure at least once every month or 2. It’s just a nice little treat and helps relax me in a busy season of motherhood and being a realtor in Memphis. Love your blog so much!

I need better to do lists. With four kids all in school the end of the year and ALL.THE.ACTIVITIES with donations and parties and time slots and craziness! I need to be even more organized!

OMG…I laughed out loud when I read about you designing your bags for fun! I do that too : ) Amazing giveaway as always Shay!

Love Barrington bags! I’ve had mine for a few years now. I am a sucker for anything with my initials or name on it since I was never able to enjoy that stuff as a kid(I have a very unusual name). I have my daily lists of goals too! Things like 10,000 steps, drink a gallon of water, etc. I love crossing things off my lists ? http://www.caligirlonthemove.com

So many of these are on my improvement list for summer. Get more sleep, drink more water, get outside, get more steps, read more… All great things to work toward!

I’d love to know more about what kind of sunscreen you wear everyday!
Melodie says
I want to go to bed earlier. I wake early to make it to my workout. I’m often running on 5hrs of sleep all day which I just know isn’t healthy.
Heather says
Have you tried Hint Water? It is a really nice break from “regular” water. I had a bad Diet Coke habit but for whatever reason, it was hard for me to chug the amount of water that I needed to but when I found Hint Water, I became a water drinking machine! It is not sweet like a lot of flavored waters. And I love that a woman executive at Gogole started the company because she needed to drink more water. #girlpower

For obvious reasons – I really really hope I win the Savannah Tote. I absolutely LOVE it!!! Like mildly obsessed and feel like I need this bag of goodness in my life.
Overall – great post and great ideas! I’m right with you – drink more water, get more sleep, and work out every day!

To BE KIND, smile at a stranger, you never know what their story is or what they may be going through. Pay it forward when I can, everything in the line of making others happy in their heart.

Amen! Love this post. I’ve adopted minimalism and I own only two pairs of sneakers and one pair of sandals. I just don’t need more. My black Nikes go with everything. This small change has made me a better me. Thank you for advocating for sunscreen use, that is my next Best Me goal!

Your list for May is amazing, good luck!!
These bags have been on my wishlist for years. I sure would love to win one!!

I always love your May challenges! These are all great reminders. My biggest one I want to focus on is being outside more. I think I get a big boost in spring/summer when I spend more time outside. Whether it’s gardening, walking, taking my lunch/happy hour outside, I’m going to focus on that!

Great set of goals! So I LOVE Diet Pepsi (like a lot :)) and I think my favorite part of it is the carbonation so in an effort to drink more water, I started drinking flavored seltzer water (like LaCroix) and it has changed my beverage intake!!! It takes a little getting used to (and is not exactly super inexpensive, ha ha) but I figure if that is my worst vice in life – it’s ok. 🙂
Julie Jones says
Shay I’m so excited that you are giving away one of those bags, I’ve admired those for so long. I am going to use a fit journal everyday to record my water & food intake, track my vitamins, and exercise for everyday. I’m trying to provide some accountability. Thanks for sharing your list, that is so motivating. Good luck to both of us!

Loved this and I need to think about what I’m going to do in May in the way of positive changes. I’ve been getting up between 5 and 5:30 forever and ever and I can’t even imagine sleeping any later. But, I do go to sleep by 10:30 so I think I’m good on my sleeping and rest. And, I am drinking so much more water this year but it isn’t easy but I find if I’m not drinking that I sure do get thirsty. And, more steps, that’s always a good idea! Happy rest of the week!

Can you track your sleep stages with your Iwatch? I use a Fitbit Alta HR and tracking time asleep as well as type of sleep has made a big difference. I had to give up my bad habit of taking an Advil PM when I really needed to sleep. Those sleep aides keep you out of deep sleep, and that’s the stage of sleep where your body repairs itself.
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t know. Probably? I track my sleep with my Sleep Number app, so I’ve never looked.

Love all of this and admire your drive at TEN goals. I am going to join you on 2 – More Steps and More Water. Water is such an issue for me. I have a cup of coffee in the morning and then tend to go all day without drinking anything!
Shannon says
For sure going to try to get more sleep!!!!

Love your giveaways this week AND my name is Savannah so that would be the tote I would choose 😉

Great goals! I have several of those on my list. I’ve gone to the gym nearly everyday in April (huge change for me!) and determined to keep it going. Focusing on heart health and nothing else (past motivation has been weight loss). I’m hoping this shift in thinking will keep me going!
Just hard to be out 1.5-2 hours daily, Home life is suffering which equates to lots of guilt!

I have always wanted a tote 🙂 YAY! I also love this idea. I am trying to drink less soda and more water, I have found putting lime juice in helps me suck it down a whole lot faster! I love May for the same reasons! xoxo ERIN http://www.simplepurposefulliving.com

What a great idea and inspiration! Love your list and will definitely be adding some of your ideas to my list. May is my birthday month so I always set a list of new goals for the year. They always say birthdays are a time of reflection. Some goals I have are to be kind to a complete stranger everyday even if it’s just a small word of acknowledgement. To make their day, to be less critical of myself, to let it go if I don’t finish the entire to do list (it will be there tomorrow, to try to eat and live a more healthier lifestyle and to not feel so guilty about setting aside a little time. Good luck to everyone with their lists!

More water, more sleep, more quiet time with God and sunshine time with my boys–I’m all in 🙂

I would love to see these goal posts as a monthly feature! I loved when you did them before. It always helps me be more productive when I see others lists! ☺️ I love the “earn your shower.” I am going to try and be outside everyday, drink less Dr. Pepper, and read my Bible every day. Love your goals!!

I love your goals, thank you for the inspiration! I also love Barrington Bags, ost especially the totes!!!!! So I totes hope I win!

Yes to more water. That so does not come naturally for me and it’s almost more like medicine…lol. I grew up on the Diet Coke train to and have “mostly” given them up in the last few years. I mean Mexican food and diet coke are a marriage made in heaven, so let’s be reasonable…LOL. Barrington totes are soooo FUN and easy to play on their site designing new bags. Love that!
Shelly says
Working in an office it is so hard to get steps in every day! I have to consciously do things like wall down to the 1st floor and all the way to other side of the building to get steps in! Getting to the gym more is a huge priority for me!!! And water…blah…if I loved it I would be happier.

I just started using an app on my phone called insight timer. It has thousands of options for mediation modes: sleep, self compassion, calming nervous system, I love it. Second, once a week I’m going to actively use professionals to help me in my self care. For me that means alternating between seeing my acupuncturist, getting a massage, appointment with my psychologist, chiropractor. Just something once a week where I invest in my well being. As a teacher, my job is so taxing on my adrenals and I know I live in a state of toxic stress everyday. I want to counterbalance it. Finally, I started doing Self Care Sunday. I put my phone on airplane mode. I take a long leisure walk without my dog (cause she always needs to stop and get pets or smells so sometimes it isn’t relaxing) and listen to an inspiring podcast, no TV or Netflix, read for at least an hour, cook my food for the week while listening to music and enjoying wine, and do one thing to keep my space organized and free of clutter. I LOVE self care Sunday!

Love this! My goal is to be even more present with my kids. My second baby turns 1 on the 19th & wow that the time fly. I want to put away to do lists, skip grocery store trips, and just spend the time on the playing with my kids.

I need more water and sleep so badly! I am definitely joining you on these two 🙂 I would also like to read more. It helps me fall sleep at night if I read, instead of scrolling IG before bed. I have got to make these commitments to myself!

I love all of these things! I am going to make a goal of walking and start counting my steps on my Apple watch!! Thanks for the motivation for May!!!

Thank you for the fun filled May so far. I agree May has always been a favorite month. I think in part it is because it is my birthday month. However I think it is because it is really when spring hits us and we’re out of school. Don’t get me wrong I love school but I also love the freedom of summer. Maybe that is why September is a favorite is because after the freedom of summer we can get back to a more structured time.
I am loving the #aphotoadayinmaychallenge and you 10 things to do more in May.
Thank you for your inspiration! Your blog comes up at our book club often. I even have my 19 year old son reading Red Notice and then up next the Girl With Seven Names.

I am too late for the giveaway. I wanted to comment though and tell you I love your May list. I would add to mine I will organize 1, JUST 1 drawer or cabinet during May. I am not going to try and organize everything in my home all in 1 day. Also, I will list more on ebay, I have so many great items I could sell if I get my act together and list them. I only listed 3 items and sold the biggest one already, have been paid, printed the postage and will mail tomorrow. I feel so accomplished.

I love this! I have recently been thinking about doing something similar.. just make small habit changes. I am also trying to cut out the soda… diet coke is too good sometimes. Do you have any tips for how to add in more steps to your day? I am super inspired you can get so many steps AND read as many books as you do. Any advice?
Mix and Match Mama says
Nothing super original. When it’s evening and I notice, I don’t have enough, I set out for another walk with the dogs. That typically does the trick for me!
