It’s How We…Wednesday! Once a month, Erika and I host a link up where we talk about how we (fill in the blank). We’ll share and then we’re hoping you’ll link up and share too…because I LOVE learning new things from you ladies! So far this year, we’ve discussed…
JANUARY: Our New Year’s Resolutions.
FEBRUARY: How we take care of ourselves
MARCH: How we mom fail and live to talk about it
APRIL: How we spring clean/organize
And this month…HOW WE TRANSITION OUR WARDROBES!!
BUT, before we get to that…HOLY GUACAMOLE!
Did you guys read the comments yesterday on my Chores & Allowance post? I mean…WOW! So many great ideas!! When Andrew came home from the gym, I think I talked his ear off with all of these ideas. I was blown away!! Thank you all SO VERY MUCH!! If you missed it (or read it early), go back HERE and read the comments!
Okay, on to today’s post! So, here in North Texas, the weather has finally leveled off (I think) to warm outside every day. But seriously, friends, for the last two months, this has been me…
It will be 43 when I leave the house and 83 when I get home with the kids after school. Um, that’s hard to dress for…
When the weather is tricky like this, I tend to rely on the same staple items to transition me through.
Want to know what my #1 transition item is???
This…
My two denim jackets.
Whether it’s spring or fall, they’re my perfect extra layer. I toggle back and forth between my lighter one and my darker one…but I love them both. Another good transitional piece is that dress up there in that last picture! Mine is sold out but this one is very similar. It’s long, it’s light, it’s black…it just works when the weather is wonky.
Now, because I don’t live somewhere that gets really cold, I don’t have to totally sort out my closet with the changing seasons. I can kind of get by with keeping my winter/summer clothes are little mixed up. Like this…
Sweater, tank, shorts and Converse for the win. It’s a jumble of multiple seasons, but it works, right?!
Speaking of those shorts (that pic was from last September and I’m still wearing them pretty much every day!), I bought these too that are less distressed…
SHORTS//TEE//SANDALS//NECKLACE
Cute, right?
Here are the original ones again…
SHORTS//TEE//NECKLACE//SANDALS
Another pair of shoes that have gotten me through fall and now spring are these…
…I bought these open-toe booties during July in the Anniversary Sale and am still loving them! Because of the open toe, I feel like they can go either “it’s warm” or “it’s hot” or “this day has both warm and hot in it”. Being able to see my toes just makes me happy this time of year 🙂 .
So, what are your favorite staple items for transitioning from spring to summer? Let’s be honest…by the end of June, I’m wearing either workout clothes or swimsuits all day and not even getting myself dressed. Ha! Anyone else? I let myself go until September 😉 .
Comment and share please! And if you blogged How We…Wednesday too, please link up below! Next month our topic is…how we plan our summer vacations!
Speaking of which, don’t forget about this…
…if you book a trip with us this month (departing any time in 2018 or 2019), your name will be entered into a drawing to win a $500 Visa Gift Card!! Email us today at mixandmatchtravelagency@yahoo.com for info!
Happy Wednesday, friends!

Spring and fall are so annoying in terms of what to wear, haha! Where I live, the weather is sweltering hot for one week, then freezing cold the next. And now it’s raining!

I am happy when I can see my toes with my shoes too and I feel like that finally happened last week here in New York! I’m a big fan of the jean jacket and cargo jacket to get me through spring. Happy Wednesday!

I have such a hard time finding white tees that aren’t see through. Does everyone wear a tank underneath? Then it seems bunched up. Help?? 🙂

I do! I love the Halogen camis from Nordstrom. They are the best!! They wash and dry perfect every time too!

I live in New Brunswick Canada so we have extreme weather shifts! You are always a little scared to put away the snow gear in fear of it deciding to snow late in the season (which happens). But it’s a complete shift in clothes. All the winter gear has to be sorted; those unmatched gloves and mittens thrown out, the ripped snow pants and too small jackets. The stuff that stays for next season gets organized and tucked away and the others get thrown out or put in the sell in the fall bin! Then you go through the summer stuff you put away last year, realize your kids shoes don’t actually fit and that they have to sneakers or sandals!! It’s a fun time! haha!
As for the grown up clothes, you actually switch out the winter sweaters, fleece and socks for the shorts, dresses and tees! Same goes with the shoes. It’s a complete switch that requires bins!
I guess it’s the price to pay for fully experiencing all 4 seasons. Sadly sometimes all in one day!!!

I live in Upstate NY (think Buffalo Bills) and we are currently in this exact same transition. I rely heavily on my denim jacket to get me through! I have a harder time with my kids who want to wear shorts and dresses every single day now. That’s fine when it’s 77 like today, but it’s supposed to be 55 on Friday & that won’t work! What do you do with your kids to transition their wardrobe?

Where is the Navy floral top from in pic #2?
Mix and Match Mama says
Loft!

I live in the south too, while we do get all four seasons it’s not dramatic but it feels that way! A person with true winter would think we are wimps. HA! I switch my shoes out because I don’t wear boots in the summer or sandals in the winter. The out of season shoes go in the top of my closet and the in season come down to wear I can reach them. Like you, I don’t switch my clothes out but I should probably consider it so I have more room in my closet. Some items are definitely winter or summer and never cross over, other items I use for layering. By the way, I have closet envy! Yours is magnificent.

Transitions…the weather in VA is much like menopause year round. My favorite transitions are the sleeveless cotton shirts (new line at Target is so darn cute…Ann and Away. I just got a black with a floral pattern and so adorable. I wear these under jean jacket or nice blazer with jeans. Only $8 a shirt! My new favorite shoe is Franco Sarto wedge type with lace up pattern, but they zip. They are sheer comfort and so cute with shorts, dress, jeans, etc. I wore them on trip to Vegas and just worked!

I literally just LOL at that first sentence!

Are those sandals the Havana Red color? So cute.

They are!!

For me, the best way to deal with transitioning weather is to wear long sleeve light weight clothing. In the morning and evening add a jacket when going out. I check the weather forecast daily since some days are really freezing all day and then I’ll wear sweaters and boots. Our kids schools have uniforms so they don’t have to think what to wear in this weather. Since I’m a naturally hot person, I need dark color shirts and dresses to wear in the winter when the heating is on. Switching out the closets is a big job which hasn’t gotten done yet. I usually do two stages since our closets are small. First put away heavy winter and take out some summer, then the rest later in the season.

I just opened up a boutique called The Pineapple Porch and I recently got in a camo jacket that is the perfect transition piece. I have to stop myself from wearing it every day! It is lightweight enough to have on all day inside or in the morning and evenings when the weather hasn’t warmed up yet! I have worn it with maxi dresses, short dresses, jeans and now I want to pair it with the shorts you just linked in your post!
I love your style, Shay! Thanks for the spring/summer inspo!!
Audra says
Where did you get your CUTE wedges in the first 2 pictures? Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
Nordstrom!
Kathleen says
Hi Shay
I found your blog through Andrea over at Momfessionals a few months back. I went back to your first post and have read through to now. Your family is just lovely and you are pretty inspirational – I now get up at 4.20am (I know you get up 5am now but I started when I read that you got up earlier!) because I am a morning person and but never had enough time on the morning, duh me didn’t think to get up earlier as I was already getting up at 5am and that would be weird but it totally works so thanks for that! So hello and thanks from Australia!
Mix and Match Mama says
Well, hello to you, Kathleen!! Thank you so much for stopping by!! That means more to me than you’ll ever know!

Hey Shay,
Would love a mini Instagram video of your closet. We only ever see the one angle and it looks like something out of a magazine. Been following your blog since Miss K was a babe. Love having your blog part of my weekly/daily routine!
Much Love from Sask Canada

I had the same question as Audra about your wedges. Do you know the name of them or have a link to them? So cute!

Those pics are older, so they’re out of stock. They are Steve Madden though!

Hey Shay! This is a little random… but I noticed your Louis Vuitton bag in one of your photos above (and noticed you have a few from other posts over the years). I am getting my first LV for my 30th birthday next month and wanted to see if you like any style over another? Any recommendations on one I should start with?? Thank you!!! XOXO
Mix and Match Mama says
My faves are always the Neverfulls. I think the medium sized one is perfect for every day use.

How do you find the sizing runs on the distressed denim shorts? I was reading through the reviews and some say they run huge and others true to size, I’m interested in ordering them so was just curious on your thoughts, since you seem to love them!
Mix and Match Mama says
I bought true to size. I think that’s perfect!
