Happy Friday, friends! Today, I’m partnering with my favorite brand EVER Athleta and ShopStyle and sharing my updated FITNESS ROUTINE! BUT, first and foremost, thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers and love on Wednesday. Procedure #19 wasn’t easy, but it was better than 18, and we couldn’t have done it without prayers. THANK YOU! She is doing so well that she actually wants to go to school today, so that’s a huge PRAISE! She is so tough. This girl is SO TOUGH! Thank you for the love.
Okay, today, I’m so excited because it is another “routine” post! (I love reading about other people’s routines!!)
In case you have forgotten, here are the other “routine” posts I’ve done this year: first, I shared with you our MORNING ROUTINE and then, I shared with you our BEDTIME ROUTINE, and then our THERAPY ROUTINE and then, our Pre-Op ROUTINE, and then, our MEAL PLANNING ROUTINE.
This post is the best of both worlds. First, I’m getting to share with you my favorite pieces from Athleta, which as you know IS MY VERY FAVORITE STORE, plus, I have a new fitness routine so to speak, and I’m excited about that too! Back in May, I worked with Athleta for the first time and gushed like crazy over how much I love their brand…
…I wear Athleta EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. Yes. Seven days a week, 365 days a year, I wear something Athleta at some point during my day. Maybe it’s because I worked out? Maybe it’s because I was outside with my kids? Maybe because I just wanted something comfy on? Whatever the reason, whatever the season…I’m wearing their clothes. I love them.
Um, how cute is my outfit?! I wear this all day long (not just for working out!)! TIGHTS//TANK//SPORTS BRA//SWEATSHIRT
I’ve had a lot of you guys ask me lately to share my new workout routine because I’ve changed it up! Let’s backtrack a minute before we dive in…I’ve always been a very active person. I started dancing when I was three…
…continued dancing and started running in high school as well. I have tried many different types of fitness classes/workout routines/ways to exercise over the years, and some things I always go back to while other things are just seasons in my life. For instance, I started practicing yoga when I was about 18 and have never looked back. It’s my favorite form of “exercise”. There was a season when running was my favorite thing…
…I ran long distances every week (over 20 miles at a time on Saturdays!) and completed two full marathons…I haven’t run over three miles in years and am perfectly fine with that. That was a season. When Kensington was six weeks old, I started a stroller-based workout class and attended four days a week for three years…
…that was such a sweet season because I was able to workout with both of my babies in tow.
After three years of stroller classes, I decided to join a gym!
My kids were getting too big for the stroller classes, so I found a great gym with an amazing kid’s area and started going to a HIIT class twice a week with an awesome instructor. I ended up doing that for 7½ years! WHOA!
I can’t wash this top fast enough! I want to wear it every day!! TIGHTS//TOP//TANK//SPORTS BRA Now, my top is available in other colors but no longer in black, for a similar top in black, check out this one.
Then this last May, I changed it all up again. All of a sudden, I realized that going to a mid-morning workout class wasn’t working for me. My kids were all in school, so I wasn’t using the childcare any longer, I was working so much more than I had been 7½ years prior, so cutting into my work day by going to the gym was getting annoying for me…and therefore, I was either skipping the gym or just cranky the whole time I was there (thinking about all I needed to do when I got home). I started talking to Erika about it and she was in the same boat. What used to work so well for us, just wasn’t working any more. We didn’t need child care and we needed all of our time during the day to work, but I was really worried about changing things up because I loved my actual class so much, and I adored the teacher. I had myself convinced that I wouldn’t ever find anything comparable. I mentioned this to my friend Lauren and she suggested I try one of the early morning classes at our gym. You know I love getting up early, but if you saw my MORNING ROUTINE post from April, I loved getting up, drinking coffee and working all snuggly on my laptop from bed, I was not a “get up and go workout” kind of girl…BUT she told me to try it just once. So, I did. AND I LOVED IT!
Friends, I love, love, love working out early in the morning now!! I am so glad I tried that one class! Now, four mornings a week, I’m at the gym. FOUR! I have this new routine where I wake up early, drink one cup of coffee and do my quiet time and then head to the gym (while Andrew does cardio at home and then goes to his gym when I return). Now, it’s early, do not get me wrong! I am waking up at 4:10 and at the gym by 5:20 every morning, but when 6:15 rolls around and the sun starts to rise and I’m done with my workout, I feel like a new person! I have so much more time during the day now, I don’t have the “I have to go to the gym” dread hanging over my head all morning and I’m actually working out MORE because it really fits into my schedule so much better. Plus, I’ve met two new instructors that teach these classes, and I love them too! I also really like the new friends I’ve made in these morning classes. It really has been such a blessing to me. Two days a week, I’m doing a HIIT class and then the other two days, I’m doing a weight-lifting class. On Fridays, I do some sort of cardio or yoga at home.
Last week, I wanted to take you along with me during the week so you could see my new routine PLUS, of course, I’m wearing Athleta in every picture because IT’S ALL I WEAR!!
Here we go…
Hello, Monday morning! I was up and at ’em at 4:10! Wake up, drink coffee, read Bible, get ready for the gym. I love Athleta’s tights because they cover the waist perfectly and don’t cut you off in the middle. They’re so comfortable that you’ll want to wear them all day long. I’m wearing them here with this tank (it comes in so many colors!) both in an xsmall.
Our gym is FREEZING! You could hang meat in there! Because of that, I always wear a sweatshirt until I warm up. You are missing out if you’ve never worn an Athleta sweatshirt. I cannot even describe how soft they are. I’m telling you, you will never wear any other brands. I bought pink, but it does come in multiple colors. This one HERE is very similar too and also available in multiple colors!
Love this!
Andrew walked through just as I was taking pics. Monday morning selfie for you!
Look who I found in the parking lot bright and early?! (Or should I say dark and early?!) It’s always more motivating when you know you’re meeting someone at the gym!
I got to class and started getting all of my stuff together.
Hello, 5:30!
Back in the car after class SO EXCITED to have my workout behind me!!
I took a quick pic with this cutie and drank one more cup of coffee before officially starting my day.
I’m telling you, you will live in these leggings and this sweatshirt! That’s what I love about Athleta! It’s clothes for working out but also for living life!
Tuesday morning came in a hurry…
…put on my tights, my tank and my sports bra…
Isn’t the back cute?!
Then, I topped everything with this top. You’re going to see me wearing it again this week because it’s so comfy!!
Back in the parking lot before the sun came out!
#gymselfie 😉
This top isn’t a sweatshirt, it’s like a roomy little tee that just drapes over everything so nicely!
You need the full effect 🙂 ! Tights, tank, tee…all my favorite things! (They all come in so many colors!)
A quick pic right before we all headed to school. I love my people so much!
This is the only pic I got on Wednesday, but I was there! I’m wearing my favorite Athleta shorts and a tank on this day as I did my HIIT class.
I woke up Thursday morning super happy that the cute top was clean and ready to be worn for the second time that week!
Cute top plus tank plus sports bra plus tights plus coffee equals the perfect morning 🙂 .
On Fridays, I skip the gym and do something at home instead! I either practice yoga, ride my stationary bike, go for a walk or do a fitness video off of my phone. Last Friday, I enjoyed the beautiful weather and walked three miles. I’m wore my fun pink shorts and that black tank again for my morning walk.
So, here’s the deal..I personally think working out comes and goes in seasons, and it works much better if you roll with it instead of beating yourself up over it. There are times in life when one thing works really well (whether that’s a class or a schedule or an instructor or whatever!) and then, there are times in life when you need to change things up because if working out is complicated for you, you won’t do it. Anytime I start to realize I’m not working out very often, it’s almost always because I’m either burnt out from that particular type of exercise or it’s not convenient for me…and if it’s not convenient for me, I won’t do it. My main goal every day is more about being active and less about hitting a certain number of calories or minutes spent “working out”. (I’ve done several posts about how I stay active throughout the day HERE.)
So, that’s my new fitness routine! What do you do to stay active? I’m always interested in everyone else’s routines too!! Please comment and share if you’ve found your “thing” and it’s made working out easier/more achievable.
A huge thanks to my favorite store for being a part of today’s post! I’ve been a true fan of Athleta for so many years, so it’s so fun to partner with them and hopefully, encourage all of you to think about shaking up your workout routine! I do not just wear these clothes for exercising, these are truly the clothes I live in.
I’m off to enjoy my weekend now! I hope all of you have a fantastic first weekend in October!!! Sending you lots of love this weekend! xo

Thanks for sharing your routine, Shay! It’s been so long since I’ve exercised myself… oops…

Hey girl!!
We are opening a Row House in McKinney and would love for you to try it! We think it’s something you’d love. Think spin class just on a rower. Personally, rowing wasn’t my favorite in the gym but when i tried this i was all on board for it. We look forward to hearing from you!
Amye says
Where/when is it opening? My husband went to one while on a work trip and literally hasn’t stopped talking about it for months!!!
Amy says
I switched to 5:30 or 6 am classes a few years ago and I don’t think I could ever go back! It took a little while to get used to it but otherwise I would talk myself out of working out all day long. Glad Ashby is recovering well!
Narci says
Those early morning classes are the absolute best, and you always look darling in your athleta. Seriously so cute, friend!
Annaliese says
Do you have a gym bag you could recommend?
Mix and Match Mama says
Mine is an oldie, but I love it…from Athleta 😉 !
Erika Slaughter says
Next time we’re selfing at the gym…you should give me a heads up! ????♀️??♀️

I’m in a season where it’s very difficult for me to get to the gym, even early. (I have a four month old and one of my two year old twins has been waking up at 5:30 AM!!) So I’ve been popping in Ballet Beautiful DVDs and doing them after my coffee and bible time. Perfect, short, high intensity workouts for a mama with not a lot of free time!
Mix and Match Mama says
Girl! You are in a season!!!! Good for you for doing anything at all (although your routine sounds so lovely to me!!)!
Nicole says
Love this post!!! Thanks for doing it!! What’s your coffee routine now? Haha! And do you ever do anything on Saturday or Sunday? Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
I really don’t do anything on the weekend unless I happen to go for a walk or something with one of my kiddos/ride bikes. I drink 2-3 cups depending on the weather 😉 .
Nicole says
If you have two cups of coffee in the morning, do you still do an afternoon cup?
Mix and Match Mama says
Most days 🙂 .
Dana says
Hi Shay,
Have you always maintained about the same weight? You look great! How do you stay so motivated to workout everyday?
Mix and Match Mama says
I have. I think that for me, routine is the key. If I have a solid routine, then it’s just like other habits of mine, it sticks. I also really, really think you need to be doing something you love. If you hate what you’re doing, you won’t do it.
Emily says
Are you washing your face/redoing your Cream/makeup etc for the day again after the gym? I find my face is getting so dry washing and applying my creams/sunscreen when I Wake up, then after working out washing my face again, then a third cleanse before bed! What is your routine? Your skin looks amazing!
Mix and Match Mama says
Before the gym, I’m just spritzing myself with the Kopari Rose Spray. When I get home from the gym, I’m washing it and doing my “normal” routine!
Lauren says
You’re back to your “super early” wake ups … are you still feeling as rested when you were “sleeping in” until 5 or so?!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I think so. I think getting up and hitting the gym is giving me the boost I need!
polly P says
Here in the Northeast, the winter exercise includes shoveling snow! brrrrrr…Seriously, talk about a workoout! Lots of times we have to shovel before work at 5:30am to get out of the driveway!!
Mix and Match Mama says
That would totally count as a workout for me!
Sarah says
We need an Ashby update!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Awe! I’m about to go wake her up! She wants to head to school this morning 🙂 . It wasn’t great, but it was better than last time. Thank you for asking!!
Courtney M says
I used to be an at home workout person and would come up with my own “routine” of what to do but getting the motivation to workout at home when you have all the things to do would get in the way. 3 years ago now, my husband got me into boot camp and I can’t imagine my life without it! That group atmosphere and having a workout already laid out for you is right up my alley! It also doesn’t hurt to have all the motivational trainers cheering you on and celebrating your growth and successes along the way. Like you mentioned, this is what works for both us now and we don’t see that changing anytime soon. I’ll have to try out Athleta! I usually wear Lulu or Under Armour, but always looking for cute new workout clothing! Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
I couldn’t agree more!!!!
Sheaffer Sims says
I can vouch for the fact that you are often in Athleta! And not just in it, DARLING in it! Great post!
Dana says
Love it, Shay! I love your ‘active’ posts because they inspire me to get moving. I personally have been allowing myself about 20-30 minutes of watching any YouTube I want (usually mom inspiration, lol) while I do stretching, leg lifts, any type of moving exercises. It’s fun, I look forward to it, and it’s easy! I also try to go on a long walk every day with my husband.
And I know all the mamas out there are wondering- are you still getting enough sleep?! I was relieved on your behalf when you decided that you were going to really start making sure you got enough sleep. 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Probably not! I need about 30 hours in my day!
Amanda @ Cupcake N Dreams says
I LOVE that pink top and off the shoulder black top!! I haven’t bought some Atheleta pieces in awhile so it’s time to! I just don’t think I can ever do the 5:30 am classes. I draw the line at 7am haha but I do like working out from home since it doesn’t cut up my day as much either.

Richelle Orman says
Hi! Was hoping you could give pointers bc I’m in a running season. Training for a half. I have a 1 and 2 year old. I was getting up early to run before my husband left for work because it was too hot to do it during the day and it was light early. Now that fall is here, I find it way too dark in the morning but same deal at night by the time my husband gets home from work. I can’t do runs longer than 4 miles on the treadmill. It’s dreadful. Maybe you can’t help me specifically, but curious to know how you did it especially with those longer runs. Thanks!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I did those before I had kiddos, so that made things really easy. I always ran outside. I could run 20 miles outdoors without batting an eye, but after 10 minutes on a treadmill, I was bored to death. Back in the day, I did 2 to 3 short runs a week (3 to 6 miles) and one long run on Saturday mornings. I would typically leave my house at 5:00 on those mornings and run 18 to 22 miles. I loved it…but now, I can’t imagine doing it!
Jennifer says
I love working out in the morning as well. It is such a great feeling to have it done for the day. I’m up at 4:15 and at a Crossfit gym by 5:00. However, I can only do it 2-3 times a week. I get so tired…I actually fell asleep in my car yesterday waiting for my daughter to finish her dance class…luckily I woke up right on time! ? ?
Laura says
I’m lucky enough to have a gym (converted garage so nothing fancy) at the house and subscribe to Les Mills On Demand. I workout after work which is perfect for this season of life. I do Body Pump 2x/week, two HIIT (Sprint and GRIT) workouts/week, and a few others.
Elspeth says
I’m all about changing up my work out routine, I love going in the morning too so you have your whole day in front of you.

I actually don’t know how you do it!! If I get to little sleep I get cranky with my kids….I am the worst for working out I really don’t like it so I don’t find time for it! Thanks for the Ashby update I have been so worried!!
Marie C says
I am just wondering if you eat any little thing for energy, before you workout? Or just coffee? Do you have breakfast after you come home, on the mornings you head to the gym?
Mix and Match Mama says
I only have coffee before the gym and then eat breakfast when I get home.
Alicia says
Hi Shay!
Thanks for sharing your routine!! I’m a new mama going back to work soon and will be changing my workouts from after work to 5:30am. How early do you go to bed to wake up @4:10? I admire your ability to have that time to yourself in the morning and I want to build it in for me!! Thanks for sharing your life! XO Alicia
Mix and Match Mama says
Awe! Congratulations on your new one!!! Okay, I typically go to sleep around 10ish!
Beth Valenta says
How long are the classes that you take? I would love to do the early workout before I come to school, as I need change. In a gym rut, but I think some new outfits might be the trick. What shoes do you wear? I am researching a new pair.
Mix and Match Mama says
45 minutes is my sweet spot! Once they go longer than an hour, I lose my motivation.
Samantha says
Love this! First time mom and I’ve been wanting to squeeze a workout in my routine. The stroller class for 3 years is inspiring! The clothes you posted are so cute. I feel like it’ll help motivate me to get out there so I can at least show it off ?
Sarah DeWald says
I invested in a Peloton and that’s pretty much the best thing I’ve ever done. I can workout in the morning if I have time or in the evenings before bed if that’s when I have time. It’s been amazing and life changing and sooo worth the money.
Clare Butler says
Working out at 5:30am is a game changer for sure! There is nothing like that feeling of having your workout done by 6:30!!!!!!!!!!
Connie B says
Staying active is so important for our well being! Just turned 66 and started a new workout program a year ago. My husband and I joined a 50+ program at a crossfit gym and love it! I’ve lost 20 lbs. and have gained muscle definition and strength. Is it hard? YES! But so worth it for the great feelings! However, we work out evenings-I just can’t get moving for early mornings!!
Jennifer says
I have an almost 3 week old baby girl. My routine has changed sooo much. I’m loving the slow days of snuggling up with my little one. I also can’t wait for clearance to star working out again. Mama needs to move. I’ve been walking as much as I can but I miss my routine. Just need a new one that works for me and the baby.
I love the Athleta swimsuits. Would you say their tanks and tights run true to size?
Mix and Match Mama says
They have THE BEST swimsuits!!!!! And yes, I would!!
Karen K Ivy says
You are SO right about finding something you actually like, and it doesn’t hurt when you have friends to do it with too!
I didn’t think I was going to love Camp Gladiator (HIIT, bootcamp style, parking lot workouts – ha!), but I do, and I realized, give me the outdoors when I workout!! I love being outside at 5am sweating it out before my day starts!
Julie says
I am so glad to hear Ms. Ashby is doing okay! I hope you are surviving too. So hard when something is wrong with your baby :(. I love all your routine posts and especially this one! I got up early once before everyone else and snuck a run in. It was amazing and I felt better the whole day! However, that routine happened…wait for it…exactly once! Sigh. I wish I could be a regular early morning person!
After I get three kids off to school each am, I get coffee/read your blog/meditate and write in my gratitude journal. Then, I’m all about the mid-morning exercise! I had exactly your routines in years before (gym/hiit/etc) but I’m in the same phase you are now. I need more work-home time! So, I do a Peleton outdoor workout at least three days a week. I LOVE their HIIT runs. You sprint/jog/run but only for brief intervals and then you get a nice walking rest. I used to hate!!!! exercise outside at all, and I’m not a big runner, but this Peleton stuff has changed my life. (Oh, air pods changed my life too as it makes it easy to exercise outside with your phone). As I’m in Boston and winter is coming, I think I’m going to purchase a (non-Peloton) bike so I can do rides with them all winter :).
Thanks again for inspiring us all with your daily cheer and energy! Enjoy the weekend with your beautiful family!
Colleen McTeague says
Can I ask a kind of sort of unrelated question? How do you keep your teeth so white!? I actually only drink 1 cup of coffee a day because I’m afraid of staining my teeth haha
Mix and Match Mama says
I use those darn Crest White Strips. They make my teeth super sensitive sometimes, but they work!
Sandra Knight says
I am dying to see all of your closet. My dream closet for sure!!
Erin says
Yessssssss! Once you get on the morning workout train, it’s hard to go back! I’ve found barre class once a week helps me with flexibility. Otherwise it’s running, walking, and weights for me!!
mary says
You are so right about fitness routines changing and sometimes they are seasonal. I was in a running season for a while, then I was in a spin season for a while. Then It was CorePower Yoga. Right now I am enjoying more yoga at home, and long walks outside. I also really love Pilates on a megaformer. It’s only 45 minutes and such a killer workout, can’t say enough good things about it 🙂
Sarah M. says
I love this attitude – rolling with it instead of beating yourself up. Right now, I do classes at 8:15 pm two nights a week, and one early on Saturday morning. I used to run more and do boot camps in the morning, but this is what works for me right now.
Question – how supportive are the sports bras? I really have a problem finding a good one, and I tend to wear two bras. We don’t have the stores in Canada, but I’m heading to San Fran next month so I’ll check it out there.
Mix and Match Mama says
They say they’re for “light to moderate” activity, but I find they work for everything!
Kindal says
It is sooooo hard for me to make it to the gym, but I have been doing online class from Obe Fitness for over a year now – they have so many different classes, including dance cardio – my favorite! During the live classes, they call out your name so you still feel like someone is watching you (so when you are coming out of your squat, you still feel guilty, haha!). And you can DM the instructors on Instagram if you are having trouble with a move and they will get back to you on how to do it – it is so interactive. It is the only thing I have EVER been consistent with because it is hard to make an excuse when it is as easy as throwing on some tennis shoes and heading to your living room to workout! And new clothes always motivate me to workout – I need to check out all of this cuteness from Athleta!
Katie Allred says
I love getting up early and heading straight to the gym! I’m a better mom when I’ve been. I swear it gives you extra time every morning ?! Now I better get some new stuff for the cold weather!
Aileen says
Do you still love your Peleton? I think we are about to pull the trigger on buying one! I have two under two and getting out to the gym these days is tough! Thanks and love all of these outfits!

I usually do Zumba on Tuesday and Yoga on Thursday while my youngest is at practice. I try to do Body Pump and/or Body Combat on Saturday mornings if we don’t have early games. And on Sunday after church, I do Body Pump and High Fitness or Cycle and Hot Yoga. Sometimes I do classes on Monday and Wednesday if time allows but since my son doesn’t have practice on those days, I like to spend time with him. I also walk at my office 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the afternoon and about 30 minutes on my lunch break Monday-Thursday.
Shawnee says
I get up at 4:30 and workout from 5-6 Mon-Fri and while I HATE getting up early that’s the best thing I can do for myself and my day is so much better when I get a workout in. We used to belong to P31 Fitness but now it’s just a group of us that meet at the park every morning and we either do weights or cardio. When the weather is bad and we can’t be outside most of us also have a gym membership.
Chrys says
This is a random question, but what do you do with your car key, cell phone, and sweater when you are taking classes? In the winter I leave everything in a locker, but in the Summer and Spring, I find that I am just randomly leaving it on the gym floor during class and it grosses me out. I feel I need a fanny pack in my life, but totally fear the judgement that comes with it haha.
Mix and Match Mama says
They stay on my mat during class. I always wipe my mats down before I use them, but you’re right, they’re often kind of gross!
Lynne says
Too funny, I wore the same costume for my dance recital circa late 1980’s!

I’ve been a 5x a week 6am workout class attendee for 3 1/2 years now and I agree with everything you said about it. It feels so good to have it done and to start your day that way. Not many things conflict with a 6am workout class as they do with say a 12pm or 4:30pm class. And i too, have to have a cup of coffee and quiet time before i head to the gym. 4:30am-6:45am is basically my favorite time of every day. 🙂
Allena says
I sound like I’m 65, but I go to Jazzercise and LOVE it! We have a studio 7 minutes from my house (I think gym proximity is very important because if it’s far away that just adds so much time to an already busy day), and the 2 owners are mid- to late-30s and fabulous. The classes vary all the time (from pure cardio to pure weights to everything in between), and I’ve been pretty consistent with working out since joining. I totally agree if you love something, you’ll enjoy going. I used to be a runner too and when I realized I dreaded running, I stopped doing it. I am fortunate to work from home, so I can usually squeeze in a class during the day 3 days/week and once right after drop-off, so I’m getting about 3 -4 classes in a week which is perfect for me. Those clothes are all super cute, I haven’t bought anything from Athleta before, but the tops are all so fun/cute, I need to check it out!
Katie Boyle says
Love to see this! It’s super helpful to hear how other busy mamas make a workout routine happen. I am super jealous of a gym with early classes. I live in the sticks with a gym that doesn’t open until 7:30am (what the heck!), so have to make my own HIIT workouts with things I find online. I dream of the day I live in a town where I can go to early classes! 🙂 Love all the cute clothing…shopping now! I met an Athleta rep at a conference recently who gave me a sweet coupon, so pumped to know what to buy!

Totally agree with the seasons. I’m a former college athlete…now a full time working wife and mom of 3 (1 who we adopted from foster care ?). Exercise all about convenience.
This year, my daughter’s middle school starts at 7:00. My husband takes the kids to school now, so for the first time ever…I get a 30 min stationary bike ride in before getting ready for work.
(5 days a week!)
It’s been amazing and now we still have time to do all the homework and sports in the evenings.
sara says
Have you tried Athleta’s venice joggers? I’ve NEVER been a joggers kinda girl – only tights/leggings. Dropped in this week, though, and a lady suggested them to me. They are AMAZING!!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I haven’t!! I need to check them out STAT!
Sarah Madsen says
Athleta is seriously my LOVE LANGUAGE! I cannot say enough good things about the brand! My mom and I have a serious obsession and 95% of our text messages these days revolve around pics or little comments about what piece of Athleta clothing we are wearing that particular day 😉 My college student budget will always make an exception to add something to the collection, haha! I have so many of their pieces and they’re GOOD. Like so good. Every day of the week I am wearing wither a sports bra, joggers, leggings, or a top and I think something from the brand will now permanently be a daily part of my wardrobe! And, I am also wearing the cozy pullover right now as well, that you featured in your first pic on this post! I have it in black and pink and love it so so much. If you haven’t already, try out the Elation 7/8 tight in Powervita. So so so amazing. you will never take them off. 🙂

Thanks for sharing! I’ve tried it all over the years and now as a working mom I have found that the BeachBody on demand workouts are fabulous. I wake up early, get them done and then the kiddos wake up….I don’t have to get ready…just go to the basement and turn it on from my phone. They have so many choices…cardio, strength, yoga, pilates, ect so I don’t get bored :-). I even got my husband into them!
Mix and Match Mama says
I love the Beach Body app!!!!!

Last year I was doing 5:15am spin classes 3x a week at my gym. But my hubby leaves for work at about 5:30am these days, so I needed to adjust. I loved the little community I found with the gym spin classes, but I love my new routine now, mainly because it’s convenient. Couldn’t agree with you more, Shay, gotta find something convenient for it to stick. So for me now, in this is season of small elementary school aged kids, working full-time, is early morning weekday workouts at home. I have a room with huge windows on our first floor of our house that’s now my workout room and gave room in the house! I don’t have a Peloton bike or tread, BUT I do have Peloton Digital on the app. I do HIIT runs 2x per week, a fun run a 3rd day, yoga, and strength training 4 days (along with my runs or yoga). My 5th weekday (Fridays) is a full body stretch. Then Saturdays are my long runs. Somehow over the past year I’ve become a runner; I even signed up for a half marathon in a few weeks! EEK! But I’m loving this routine for me. I feel strong, I have interesting Peloton workouts with the fun Peloton trainers, I am accomplishing a lot physically, I’m energized, I’m more productive at work and have a good balance with home life too. We’ll see how long this works for me, but this is what is working for me now!!!

I love this! Good for you, mama!

Interested in how you have a “workout” room set up! Looking to put together a dedicated space in my home and there are too many possibilities out there.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Orange Theory! I have tried everything, and this is the only thing I’ve stuck with (3 1/2 years now). I love going in and not having to worry about what I’m doing…they just tell me. I love the instant feedback with the heart rate monitor on the screen too. Keeps me accountable to myself. I can truly go in and turn my brain off for an hour, which as a mom of four is a much welcome break!
When I start to get in a rut I usually go and get a few new workout pieces to get excited again. I’m always more excited to go when I feel cute! 😉
Love my athleta pieces as well as some colorfulkoala pants I’ve found on amazon! So soft!
Mix and Match Mama says
I need to try that! Do you go at specific times or can you drop in?
Kristen says
You sign up for a certain time. They offer lots of different times. I go to 6 am. You have to cancel 8 hrs before if you’re not going. If not you charged $12. Keeps me accountable ?
Kara says
I know you have and love your Peloton since you’ve blogged about it before! Do you incorporate that into your fitness routine these days or is this a season where you’re choosing the classes instead? I ask because I’m really trying to do my research and figure out of a Peloton will be worth the investment for me or if it is going to be something that will lose its appeal over time…
Mix and Match Mama says
I use it on Fridays and then, if I have time, I’ll hop on after the kids go to school (especially on T/Th after my weight class). Andrew uses it almost daily!

I JUST tried a 5:15 am spin class yesterday for the first time and I absolutely loved it for all the reasons you just said. I liked hearing about your running past, as well. I’ve been running for a long time and I just recently started getting burned out on it. It’s definitely good to change things up.
Andrea says
Do you eat before or after your work out?? Can you do a daily diet one too?
Mix and Match Mama says
Sure! I’ve done one in the past, but I should probably refresh it. I eat after. I have one cup of coffee before I go.
Katie says
I spot BodyPump 🙂 my fav!! I have been loving Cardio Barre lately too!
Do the kids all wake up after you get home? Also when do you shower when you get to the early class?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! I wake them up after I get back (I have all of their things out already, so it makes it easier on me). I shower after they go to school (7:50ish).

I like the pink nail polish on your toes… flattering and natural. Better than the frosted white color.
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s not frosted. It’s OPI Alpine Snow!
Breana Lozier says
Have you tried Burn Boot Camp? I saw that one opened up in McKinney recently. The workouts and trainers are amazing and the community is even better. I just love it!
Mix and Match Mama says
My hair stylist swears by it, but I’ve never tried! I need to!
Andi Fairley says
Which of your Athleta leggings have more compression? I’d love to try a pair but I need them to hold everything together, lol!
Mix and Match Mama says
Ohhhh good question! I would say that, in this post, the black and white ones do!
Jenny K says
Love this post! Do you eat before the gym or when you get home? ?
Mix and Match Mama says
When I get home!!

Do racerback tops or sports bras ever cause you to have neck pain or headaches? For some weird reason, I have a hard time with them. (Crossbody purses do the same.) Just curious if you’ve had this problem with other brands but not with this one. If I can find a brand that doesn’t cause me pain, I will buy it forever!
Mix and Match Mama says
They don’t, but I can see how that could happen!!
Lara says
So here’s a random question for you – do you use the same deodorant pre-workout as post-workout? I ask b/c you inspired me to switch to natural and I love the Lavanila (especially the scent!), but I feel like it doesn’t keep me dry so I don’t use it on those days I know I’ll be running around. For the dry factor, I use Primal Pit Paste, but it’s like sand paper going on and I can’t use it after I shave or I break out in a rash. First world problems, I know. Ha!
Mix and Match Mama says
I do! I have been using Native lately. It was also in my second deo review. I’m kind of into that one right now!
Vivi Mackenzie says
Okay that picture of you when you were little looks EXACTLY like Smith! So stinkin’ cute! 🙂
Amanda @ That Inspired Chick says
That picture of you in your little costume is adorable! And you are looking all kinds of cute and cozy in your Athleta gear! And strong!! ?

I’ve never worked out until I had my second baby and became a stay at home mom. What started as ‘I need to get away from my kids for 30 min’ turned into ‘I want to take care of myself better’ into ‘I’m a better mom/wife/person when I exercise’. Like you I went through a few different routines and what works best for me now is 2 weight lifting classes (one at 5:45am) and 2 dance classes and 1 run.

Thank you for the update on Ashby so glad she is feeling good enough to want to go to school. ? I run M-F with my BFF who lives across the street. Then I do some short arms and leg strength workout when I get home from running. On the days we don’t run outside (bad weather) I do the treadmill and read and catch up on all my blogs. (Yours and Erika’s are some of my favorites ?) Thinking about getting a Peloton or even Nordic Track I believe has a comparable one…just to add something different to my routine. Have a fantastic weekend with your family!!! ❤️
Claire says
Do you eat before you work out? If so, what do you have?
Mix and Match Mama says
Just coffee!
Mary says
Definitely a major Athleta fan here, too. I might have the sweatshirt in 3 colors. It is just too good to only have one when it needs washed!
Laura JeanS. says
Weird question…but how often do you wash your hair? ?. I have long hair, and washing and styling after every workout drives me nuts!
Great post! Athleta makes my favorite every- day pants 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Every other day! It’s rare that I do it less or more.
Tully says
We got the Peloton tread in January and it is amazing- if you love the bike, you will love this even more. It has everything- basic running, HIIT classes, interval, distance training, boot camp, strength classes, yoga, meditation and more! It doesn’t disappoint! Plus you can do it at home. I have 4 small kids who hate the gym daycare so this is a game changer for me.
Kristen says
Do you notice sweat marks after you work out in your colored leggings? I only have black because I’m so nervous about the different colors, but I love the look of them!
Mix and Match Mama says
Sometimes, but not too often or I really don’t think I’d continue to buy them. I think it’s very minimal.
Amanda McPharlin says
Your post hit home for me. My workout routine has changed through the years too. When I had my babies, I would walk with them in the stroller. Then when they were old enough to go to gym care, we lived in McKinney and I loved the classes at the YMCA. When my youngest went to Kindergarten and I went back to work as a teacher, I just couldn’t fit it in. Now they are old enough to stay home on their own so I joined Orange Theory. I love it and it works for me because I have to book my classes ahead of time and plan them into our busy family schedule. Time for me =happy mommy!
Christine says
Hi,
I love Athleta too! Have you ever tried there dresses and skirts?
Thanks!
Christine
Mix and Match Mama says
You know, I haven’t!!
Angie says
I’m obsessed with Athleta ever since my husband gave me an outfit for Christmas! Perfect under my ski clothes or running. I also went back and bought their more casual clothes when with the kids or camping. Holds up well and so cute!
Anna says
Wow! You look amazing!
Heather says
This post is just the amount of cuteness and motivation that I need to make my work outs happen! I recognize that gym 🙂 I enjoy running or working out by myself with music, but there’s no accountability. I’ll have to try early morning classes and creating them as part of my routine. Love the workout clothes!!
Emily says
Is it body pump??
Leah Reinemund says
Love this! Morning workouts have changed my life! Now my friends and husband think I am absolutely nuts but at 6:30 AM when my workout is complete I am so happy!!
Katie says
What are your go to gyms shoes? I’m in the market for a new pair… 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Nike.com 🙂
Nora says
We need to get you into a 5:30am Pure Barre class! Nothing like it!! You look amazing in the Athleta clothes! 🙂
Annelise says
Have you ever tried a class at barre3?! I instruct at 2 barre3 studios in MA. Looks like barre3 Plano or barre3 Frisco would be closest. Trust me when I say, the workout and community there will change your life!!
Mix and Match Mama says
There is a barre class right by me, but I’ve never tried it. You’re right, I need to!
Annelise says
Yes!! Barre3 is life changing! They even have a Play Lounge area that you can bring your kids to while you work out — score!

Thanks for posting your schedule, I’ve been trying to figure out how to fit in my workout and Bible time before I have to get my son and myself off to school (I’m a teacher). It’s not quite 6 am here yet and I am done with my workout AND Bible time! Hoping I can keep this habit up, just gotta get in bed at a decent hour ?
