I’m so excited about this post 🙂 !
Today, I’m showing you one of the newly added on portions of our house!!
Woohoo!
Let’s recap: in May 2020, we started on a new construction project that would add additional square footage to our house to include fun things like my office, a home gym, an upstairs laundry station, a full bath, a bigger family room and loads of new storage. We knew this project would be a huge undertaking (and mess!), but we were so excited. And thennnnnnnn on June 19, 2020, our house had the roof off of it to add on this new area when…it rained. So, what began as a fun project to add a few new rooms ended up being the total gutting and rebuilding of our entire house. If you were around last year, then you know that I took the ordeal completely in stride and it didn’t inconvenience me at all nor did I ever complain. #yeahright It was honestly terrible, and I complained daily the entire 10 months it took to put it back together. #ugh
So, over the last few months, I’ve been sharing all of our new spaces, and today, I’m sharing one of my very faves…our new and improved upstairs family room! If you want to go back and check out the other newly added/remodeled spaces, I have them here below…
Andrew and I built our house in 2014 and this used to be the back of it…
…but now, after this new addition, this is the back of it…
So much fun, right? We added a staircase inside on the right side of the house that leads up to my office on the second floor (extending the fireplace up). We also added a gym, a laundry area, a full bath, loads of storage and made the family room larger upstairs (which connects over the patio to the existing part of the house. This way, you can enter the new area from all three main staircases inside the house and everything flows.
I reallllly wish I would have done a better job photographing this part of the house buuuut…I didn’t. I think, if the house wouldn’t have flooded, I would have done better, but this time last year, I was just trying to keep my head above the water.
Ha! I did find this old picture from last year…my walls were taupe and the upstairs was chaos, but now…
…come on in to our new family room 🙂 .
Before the new construction, there was a wall with windows overlooking the backyard that went from the corner where the faux-deer is to the corner where the first step is. I made a little video for Instagram last year that I’m going to re-post here so that you can better understand…
…make sense? We used to use this room a little, but now, I would say we LIVE in this room especially during the school year when we’re cozy and inside at night.
We’ve always saved a lot of our kids’ art from elementary school and framed them for this wall.
Do you see my fish?
I’m really obsessed with my fish paintings. We bought them in Nantucket from the artist who actually catches the fish and then takes them and makes a stamp out of them for each piece. I don’t know…they speak to me 🙂 .
We are OBSESSED with our couch! I had been telling Sean and Catherine how I was going to buy this couch for our new upstairs area since I love theirs so much. (Sean and Catherine own Home By Sean and Catherine where they make the world’s most comfortable furniture!!) Well, they knew which one I really wanted and one day after the house got destroyed…
…Sean brought it to me as a gift! Awwwwww! Insert all the sweet happy tears for that little brother of mine (and his beautiful bride). We are obsessed with it. I knew I would love it for how comfy it was, but my mom kept telling me how much I would love it for how easily things clean off of it…and boy, she was right! So far, I’ve easily cleaned off all the lovely things like chocolate pudding, mud and blood. #sigh #fourkids
We have this work station here for homework, projects and it’s just right down the hall from my office, so if anyone who works for me needs a spot to camp out a bit, they have one!
This game table here is one of my favorite finds! In this picture, we have the solid top on it, but you can easily take that off and you have a poker/card table underneath. We’ve been doing puzzles, board games and lots of coloring up here (and yes…some poker 😉 ).
I saw this guy at a store on our town square and he just spoke to me. Bahahaha! Why? Why? Why? I’m not sure, but I saw him and wanted him to come live at my house.
We bought the prints on the top shelf from the artist in Norway and had them framed. The other items all came from Nantucket. In Nantucket, almost all of the houses have names that are meaningful/kind of beachy and so we bought our sign for our one day house in ACK.
Down this hallway, you get to the front staircase.
Santa brought the kids an old fashioned arcade machine (you can hear more about it on The Bestie Breakdown) and then in the back there, is our play room (now podcasting studio 😉 ).
The battle of the stools.
If you go up these stairs, you’re in the rest of the new addition which…
…on the other side connects to me here in my office 🙂 .
And that, my friends, is our new and improved family room.
Okay, if you missed some of the other home update posts, here you go:

You should decorate the deer for the holidays! I’m sure we all know “someone” who knows how to be festive and can make this happen (wink wink)! It all looks gorgeous and well thought through! Curious what the sliding barn doors in the hallway lead to? Did you and Andrew come up with the designs for the remodel? Really like the flow!
Mix and Match Mama says
YES!!!! That’s a great idea!!!! The barn doors are going to be in another post!! And yes, Andrew and I came up with the idea. Well, I came up with all the ideas (I’m good at ideas) and Andrew came up with how it would actually be possible (he’s good with all of that…you know…hard part! Ha!).
Kelly says
Ha! This is how our marriage works too. I’m the visionary but my husband makes it happen:).

Susan says
I’ve been looking for the best way to do that too. Do you just stick with the same black frame and do the size custom?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! At Hobby Lobby, they keep your previous framing info, so every year, I just have them pull up what they did the year before and repeat it.

Elizabeth says
Hey Shay! What paint finish did you use for your trim? Thank you!!
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s SW Antique White!
Tina says
I never realized your walls were textured. I’ve always wondered…is there a reason why most walls are textured in Texas (environmental?) or is it just a design preference? LOVE the new family room!
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m going to say it’s a design preference. Typically commercial walls are not textured but residential walls are.
Connie says
I LOVE your gorgeous home!! All of it. You have the best taste and know how everything should come together. Thanks for sharing once again.
Joanne says
I just spent all morning out furniture shopping looking for a sectional; I’ll have to look at the one you have here as it does look very comfortable. I am loving all these colors.
Mix and Match Mama says
We seriously LOVE IT!!!!
Leanne Gilchrist says
It looks so fabulous, so homey, like everything just goes so well together. I was following the whole renovation/redo of your home, and I felt for you every step of the way! Sigh. Thanks for linking to Sean and Catherine’s furniture~~we’ll be needing a new couch next year, and I love their things. The basket in the family room, the one with the blankets in it, can you please tell me where you got it? I’m a HUGE basket fan, and it’s gorgeous. Thanks, Shay, for linking to all of your things you used and your generous sharing of pictures as you redid things~~we’ll be renovating our downstairs next year, and it helps to get ideas! God bless you!
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwww! Thank you, Leanne! I linked the basket at the bottom of the post. It’s from Pottery Barn!
Leanne Gilchrist says
Thanks so much for the link, Shay!
Our stairwell is incredibly tall, and I’ve got years of artwork from my kids, so I’m “stealing” your idea to frame it, and I’ll put it all in the stairwell! That way, when we open it up that closed stairwell when we renovate/remodel, their artwork will be already there!
Sarah says
I absolutely love your style. So beautiful and cozy!
That also might be the best kid art display I’ve ever seen. Such a fantastic idea. I’ll be keeping that in mind for when my babies start creating their own artwork! 🙂

Mix and Match Mama says
It’s an oldie from Pottery Barn!
Rae says
Did you frame their original artwork or make copies of it? If copies, where did you have them done?
Mix and Match Mama says
We framed all of their original art and had them custom framed at Hobby Lobby.
Francesca says
Love your TV stand! Where is it from / can you link it?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! It’s the sideboard linked at the bottom!
Kate says
Did you start year one by hanging I’m the kids photos in the middle of the wall and then work your way out? I’m trying to envision how it grew without looking awkward or off center for 8 years! Great idea! Love the color pop it adds!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes!! So, it started small (like three stacked pictures) and then over the years, we added, we moved, we added and moved some more to get this entire look. It was “complete” until the end of May when Madeley came home with her kindergarten artwork. We tried not to make it look awkward but I guarantee you seasons looked more wonky than others.
Christine says
The art teacher in me just LOVES your kiddos art gallery wall!
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwwwww! I love it too!!
Rae mccarty says
Sorry to comment late…Did you frame the kid’s original art work or a photo of it?
Mix and Match Mama says
We framed the actual art!
