It’s the April edition of LET’S LOOK!
Once a month, Erika and I host a link up where we “look” at little aspects of our lives. If you’re a blogger, make sure you blog and link up!
Last month, we postponed Let’s Look and have decided to move it to NEXT WEDNESDAY! So, this month, you’ll get TWO Let’s Look posts.
Today, our topic is Easter at Your House and then next week, April 15, the topic will be THE INSIDE OF YOUR PURSE.
Here’s what we’ve been “looking” at so far this year…
In January, we looked at our bedside tables.
In February, we looked at our winter wardrobe.
Ready for April? Here we go…
Over the years, we have carved out quite the little routine for our Easter (you know how much I love a routine!), and it’s always one of our favorite weekends every spring. It involves all my favorite F words: friends, family, food and FAITH!
Here’s a look…
On the Saturday afternoon before Easter, we always go to our church’s Easter Egg-stravaganza where we…
…get our faces painted…
…ride the rides, pet the animals, have a snow cone and participate in a massive egg hunt…
…that is nothing short of Easter chaos.
On Sunday mornings, we…
…head off to church and enjoy worship with our church family before…
…meeting our family for lunch. We typically alternate between lunch in our town or lunch in my aunt and uncle’s town. After lunch, we head back to either their house or my house for…
…Easter baskets and…
…an egg hunt.
Now, every year, you ladies ask me what I put in my kids’ Easter baskets and for some reason (I’m still not quite sure the reason), in our family, the tradition is for the grandparents to provide the baskets, so I’ve never done one.
What do I do? I like to bring some of the snacks/goodies/treats to be enjoyed on Easter afternoon/early evening. I started thinking about staple recipes and these three here are ALWAYS included when we celebrate this holiday…
#1: Deviled Eggs
Do you guys eat Deviled Eggs on Easter? I feel like we could do a whole SNL skit over the irony of the two together…but it wouldn’t be Easer without them. I personally like mine a little “fancy” in some way, so these Smoky Pecan Deviled Eggs are always a fave!
#2: Coconut
Coconut is to Easter with us as pumpkin is to Thanksgiving. It’s a necessity. Whether we have a cake, a pie or a cupcake, you better believe there is coconut on Easter afternoon. My Mini Coconut Cream Pies are super delish easy to make!
The third and final “must” at our house on Easter is…
#3: Carrot Cake
You are either a carrot cake person or you or not (same with coconut!), and my family is a carrot cake family. In fact, I view carrot cake as an Easter only dessert. Anyone else? Like, I wouldn’t eat a pumpkin pie in July, I wouldn’t eat carrot cake in October. Is that weird? Is anyone else like this? I have several carrot cake recipes on here, but my Buttermilk Layer Cake is always a hit!
I’ve been trying to think of ways to tweak our 2020 version of Easter, and I think for starters, we might grill this year. I also think that this year, we’re going to watch The Passion of the Christ with our kiddos. We did this last year and the kids really loved it (I did too!). We’ve been talking a lot this week about what was happening all those years ago leading up to Good Friday and Easter Sunday, so the visual of the movie (for older kids) is a great way to reinforce what we’ve already been discussing each morning.
What are we missing? Anything? This year will be odd, but in other years, I feel like we do cover all of our bases. The most important thing I want my kids to know is that Easter Sunday is the most important day of the year because it’s the day HE LIVES! If everything else gets lost this year, that’s at least one thing that is always the same.
Okay, don’t forget, Let’s Look is happening again NEXT WEDNESDAY!!
If you have any Easter traditions that we should incorporate, please share!! I’d love some more!! xo

Such fun traditions! We no longer do much for Easter as my kids have outgrown baskets, bunnies, and egg hunts. They won’t even dye eggs anymore. We’re planning a quiet dinner at home and I got the boys each a chocolate bunny and a book and I’ll whip up some cards this week.

My kids always liked the Resurrection Eggs when they were younger. We put them in our seasonal basket of activities/books that I’d set out and go through them with a couple of books we had. On Easter morning, we’d hide those eggs for them to find and then go through the story- the last empty egg was quite exciting! We’d also eat the cookies we made the night before that were now hollow inside.

I love this idea!!!

Our church is hosting virtual services, as the actual building is closed. I assume yours is too?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! We’ve been watching on Sunday mornings,
Kendal says
Love reading about your tradition! Does the Easter Bunny visit your kiddos? 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
No, we’ve never done the Easter bunny over here.
Jen says
Re: deviled eggs – growing up, my mom always called them stuffed eggs! She said that way we wouldn’t feel bad about eating them on Easter, plus she didn’t want to give the devil credit for anything that delicious. LOL
Mix and Match Mama says
I actually love that!!
Bev says
Easter is my favorite too because of what you said, HE LIVES! That changes everything! Happy Easter to you and your beautiful family.

I don’t know if it’s a strictly asian thing to do, but I know a lot of Chinese do it but my whole dad’s side of the family will get together every Easter after Sunday service and go visit our loved ones at the cemetery (ex. my grandma, great grandpa, etc.) and bring them Easter lilies and then go eat lunch afterwards. My church will usually host a spring festival for egg hunts/petting zoo on the weekend for children too. And watching Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston is a major tradition!
Mix and Match Mama says
I love that idea!!!
Kara says
Will you handle the baskets this year or just skip it?? Have a great weekend celebrating Jesus! ?
Mix and Match Mama says
My mama is sending a goodie box!! She will not let this year be skipped! 🙂
Erika Slaughter says
Love all those traditions! Next year will be even more special…right?
Amanda Utley says
I’m so glad you mentioned showing The Passion of the Christ to your kids because I’ve been wanting to watch it with mine, but wasn’t sure if it was too much. My kids are similar ages to yours…10, 8, & 5…how did yours handle it? Did you fast forward through parts? Did Madeley watch too? Would love your thoughts! ❤️
Mix and Match Mama says
I think you try it this year with your 10 year old, and then maybe wait for the other two. What do you think? Ease your family into it!

If anyone is looking for younger age appropriate Bible Videos, this website from my church has so many and they are so well done.

We just showed the Easter ones to our 7, 5 and 3 year olds last night.
Happy Easter! ♥️

Yes!! Deviled Eggs are a MUST for Easter, however this year since we won’t be able to gather as a family (aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins etc) we won’t have any because I’m the only one In my immediate family who eats them? We are planning on changing things up a bit: having fried chicken, green beans, homemade bread and I’m not quite sure what else because my family is BEYOND picky? We will watch our church services on tv; we will have an egg hunt (more than likely inside because it’s suppose to rain). As far as baskets: it’s what I’ve managed to order and have delivered here. We are still dying eggs not as many as we usually do because they are hard to find/ limited at the stores and my family isn’t fond of hard boiled eggs and since I’m not making deviled eggs I won’t need that many. We will still do the resurrection rolls- family tradition and the kids look forward to them every year!
As much as I will miss gathering as a family it will be a special Easter!
Sarah says
I am going to dye eggs and put stickers on them with my two year old. My family is also going to have Easter “dinner” together by having a Zoom conference call while we’re all eating dinner in our own homes. I’m actually really looking forward to seeing my parents and siblings and feeling a little bit like we’re together.
Emily says
I love the idea of watching The Passion of the Christ as a family. Our kids are 8 and 9….that’s a great idea! I haven’t looked yet but do you own it or know of some tv platform that shows it or where it’s available?
Mix and Match Mama says
Last year, we found it on TV and DVR’d it!
Jenn says
Sight and Sound Theater is releasing their Jesus production for free viewing over Easter weekend! Another great family watching opportunity. Not sure if you have ever seen one of their productions but they are amazing!

My son is a college student but I still give him his dinosaur Easter basket filled with goodies lol! He appeases me because he knows I am sentimental! Right now he is home from school and I am really enjoying this extra time with him. The time goes by so quick, so thankful God picked me to be his mom! Happy Easter to you and your family, God Bless!

That’s super cute!!

We like to “Egg” some of our friends or neighbors. Fill small Easter baskets with teats sprinkle a few eggs in their yard, leave a printable from Pinterest at the door, ring the door bell and drive off. My kids always get excited to help!
Mix and Match Mama says
So cute!!!
Sandi Kellman says
We have all the traditional things that you do with Church being at the top of the list because of Jesus but what we did in the past with the older kids and sometimes the adults we had what was called the golden egg hunt and it was so much fun and the kids got to participate with their own little golden egg and at the end of it whoever found the egg with an amount of money “was the winner was very fun activity for the adults and the kids alike
Ruth says
This is my baby’s first Easter and I was looking forward to church and having our annual lunch/Easter egg hunt for at my parents house along with some friends and their kids. Plans have obviously changed, but I think it’s still going to a good day! We watched The Passion last Sunday…it is so well done but so intense that I have a very hard time watching it a lot. Like I watched it in the theater when or first came out and didn’t watch it until 15 years later. ?
Mary Jane McNeill says
I had carrot cake as my wedding cake…and I got married in DECEMBER!!! Hahaha!! Reading your post just made me think that was kinda odd! I just love carrot cake that much!
Mix and Match Mama says
My dad does too!!!
Sheaffer Sims says
I have one thing to say…when you’re in charge of your grandkid’s Easter baskets, you’re going to be in a world of trouble. I mean, how many grandkids are you going to have????? I need to start some sort of deep breathing exercises right now. 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Will you please help?!?! 😉
Sherry Lowe says
HaHa Shaffer! My mom started the tradition. She ended up with only 4 grandkids. I’m at 7 and counting! Love making the baskets, I just have to start by February now!
Breana Lozier says
Do you let just your older two watch Passion? We were thinking of letting ours watch Passion this year as well. Our oldest who is almost 10 would be fine, but I am not sure about my 7 1/2 year old. How did your kids handle it last year? Did you show it all to them?
Mix and Match Mama says
Ashby hasn’t watched it yet. I do think she’ll watch it this year, but with the understanding that she can get up and do something else at any point.
Sugar Bostick says
How did your kids handle Passion of the Christ last year? Our daughter is 10 and I’m nervous for her to see it. It is such a powerful movie and I want her to experience it, but I’m concerned about how graphic it is. Did M and A also watch?
Mix and Match Mama says
It was very powerful, we stopped several times during it to talk/discuss/answer questions…but a year later, they still talk about it and are excited to watch it again!
Tracie says
Our pastor told about a conversation he had with a Jewish rabbi. He said Christians are missing the tradition of worship at home. Well, we are having to learn fast now!
White’s Chapel in Southlake, TX is encouraging families to set up a communion table for tomorrow evening’s Maundy Thursday service. I am planning to make unleavened bread with my kids tomorrow afternoon to review the story of Passover to prepare them for the remembrance of Jesus’s last supper with his disciples.
Growing up Baptist I had never heard of this part of Holy Week, but it has become my favorite service of the year. I hope you can join us online! Thursday evening, 5:30, 7:00, or 9:00

I second the production of Jesus by the Sight and Sound Theatre in Lancaster, PA. Their productions are so amazing. The fact that they are airing it this year is wonderful. I have seen several and plan to go again at some point.
