Well, today is June 1st, and it’s supposed to be the big day that Erika and I announce our huge Mix and Match Travel Agency giveaway…but in light of what’s happening in our country right now, as much as we like to be light in the darkness and would love to go all out for a giveaway today, it is just not the time.
You know what it is the time to do?
Pray.
Erika and I talked this weekend and decided that instead of reading our blogs this week, we would love for you to take those several minutes every day and pray.
There is a lot in this world you could be praying about right now, so if you’re a person of faith, that’s what we’re hoping you do this week during the time you normally read our blogs.
If you have any specific prayer requests right now about things you would like someone to pray over, feel free to leave it in the comment section of my post or email me. mixandmatchmama@yahoo.com.
I will be praying this week over our country, our world and over any prayer requests you share.
God bless you all so very much. xo Shay

Dana says
Great idea, Shay! Praying over here. I feel so helpless to do much, but you’re right- praying is the most important thing we can do!
M says
Hi. I appreciate your requests for prayers, and as a Christian, always support the spiritual relationship between God and man. However, after this past week of pain, hurt and divide in our country — we need prayer, but also action. We need to listen and learn from black voices. We need to better educate ourselves on systemic racism. We need to dismantle the culture that rewards overt and subtle racism. I’m learning so much this past week about what I, as a white women of privilege, can do for our fellow citizens that are in so much pain and fear. So while I agree that it is time for prayer, I’d also like to suggest that it’s time for for education,‘self reflection, behavior changes, conversation, listening, peacefully speaking up, and so much more. With respect, M.
Abigail says
I agree that action is critical right now, I wanted to create a way for us to learn and discuss this topic together. I am suggesting reading the book, “Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race” by black female author Reni Eddo-Lodge. I propose we read this book together during the month of June and then discuss it at the end of the month, as it is so important to be having these difficult conversations right now.

Thank you for this comment. As a POC, I appreciate your desire to learn more and your concern for doing the right thing.
Michelle says
M, I agree with everything you are saying. Shay,I love reading your blog everyday but sometimes and especially now praying will not help this issue. You have a huge following and would appreciate your thoughts on what actions could be taken and what you will be doing.
Thank you
Lindsey says
Praying helps every issue for a person who follows Christ ❤️
Ashley says
Education is essential, but nothing happens without prayer changing things. Ladies, let us not forget what the Bible teaches us about prayer. It was crucial then and it remains the same now. Educate yourself and others, pray, listen.
Allena says
Yes! This!
Annie says
Totally agree with this! Would also add donating to organizations like the NAACP / NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Color of Change, Black Visions Collective, ACLU, Black Lives Matter, and The Bail Project where financially able. It helps so much in advancing the cause and supporting our black brothers and sisters.
Mary says
Yes to this! We are far past the point of “thoughts and prayers”
susan says
with kindness & respect I would challenge the thought that prayer alone is not enough..it is the faith of a mustard seed that can move mountains. prayer serves as a single & direct channel to a big God who has authority over all of this, but in His love for us gives us freedom to make our choices. clearly we are failing. true honest reflection, humility and repentance from our sin is the way forward to solve these issues. but it was prayer and faith that gave Moses the power to speak and lead when he felt ill equipped to do so. prayer and faith that helped David face his giant. prayer and faith that helped Daniel survive his lion’s den. and prayer and faith that spread Christianity despite all the apostles’ oppression and obstacles. of course we should take advantage of the knowledge, tools and resources available to help further promote conversation and positive action to the issues we continue to face, but we should never underestimate prayer, or think that it alone cannot be enough, when it is genuine. true humility and repentant hearts from all mankind toward God, through prayer, is the real solution. since we haven’t been able to manage it, I am thankful for our Lord on Calvary whose own prayer gave Him the courage & strength to innocently suffer, saving us from ourselves, and give us an eternal hope where one day we all will know how to live with love for one another in peace, for always.
Sarah Anikpo says
Prayer is very important. God is in control. I am living in the middle of Minneapolis with my godly, beautiful, most amazing Papa in the world black husband. Shay, just like you advocate for adoption, please speak up for truth here. Do justice, love mercy, walk humbly…
Respectfully,
Sarah

Please listen to this well educated, articulate black woman. Candace Owens: “I DO NOT support George Floyd!” & Here’s Why! | Durtty Daily
E says
We DO need to take action. Absolutely. But Shay is not suggesting “thoughts and prayers.” That can be a canned response we give at times when we don’t know what else to say. Like, “I’m sending you good vibes.” That means nothing.
Real prayer, real intercession is what’s needed. No politician, no movement, no election will heal this land. Those things can help, but it will only be the love of Christ that will heal the divide.
Real love takes action. Christ took action to love, heal and do good on the Earth. He also prayed at length.
Both.
We would be wise to follow His example.
Sammy says
Thank you M. That is what I would like to see as well.
Sharon Henry says
That is beautifully stated. Thank you.

My husband is a Firefighter in Metro Nashville, and they had to wear bullet proof vests on calls last night. Please pray for safety of all our first responders.
Amy says
I most certainly will be praying for your husband and family! ALL first responders need a prayer of protection during this difficult time.
LIndsey says
I think it’s awesome you are using your platform this way. Thank you for being a voice for those who are not heard.
Jessica says
As a wife of a state trooper here in WV I love this and so appreciate your heart. Thank you for reminding us all to lean into the Father. Although I love your blogs and stuff as a few minutes of escape, I def love to escape with Him. I would love prayers of protection over my husband. We’ve gotten some tips on possibly rioting here in our very small town later this week and believing for hearts to change and learn to walk in love instead of hate. The Lord told me that Love is a weapon, it combats all the ways of the enemy so as it depends on me I’m going to Love like He Loved/Loves. Bless you, Shay! ?????☺️
Tamara R. says
Thank you for this Shay. I’m ashamed to say I never thought about white privilege the way I have this past week. I have been reading, listening, and learning. I pray that others do the same. That those of us who have been quietly non-racist stand up and be actively anti-racist. Then maybe we will see real change. ❤️
VICTORIA ADAMS says
I have loved following your social media presence for years (10?) and have shared my love of your blog with many people. As a person of color (POC), it would not seem that we do not have much in common….different backgrounds, different culture, different socio-economic backgrounds, etc. But, your love for family, adoption, food, shopping, and your strong faith were all things that called to me. This past week has been very difficult for all Americans and especially hard for people of color and for law enforcement. While I appreciate your call for prayer, as a long time follower, I’d love to see influencers such as yourself step up/out on your platforms and raise awareness for what is going on in this country. Racism and abuse of basic human rights is not ‘ok’. Let us all acknowledge what is going on, use whatever platforms we have, whatever means we have to raise awareness and do our part to make things better. If we can speak openly about our lives, our health, our families….then let us speak openly about these things that pain our country. All of us.
Sarah Anikpo says
Victoria,
Yes. Absolutely. Amen. We can no longer stand to be vague. It is time for action along with our daily prayers.
Amelia Johnson says
Absolutely. Action is what is needed here. Not silence. Shay- you read a lot. There are some great books on this topic I would love to see you reading and recommending. Waking up White- by Debby Irving would be a great start.

Tamara, I so agree. My eyes have been so opened and although it is an ugly reality, I am trying to educate myself so that I can do better. I just joined a “study” group through the organization Be the Bridge that meets each Wednesday night for 4 weeks, and it is very enlightening and informational.

Please pray for my son-in-law Landon. He is a police officer in Iowa. There is talk of protesters being bused in to the town he is in from Minneapolis. I pray it doesn’t happen.
Sarah M. says
Praying is great but action is also required. Don’t just pray for change, be the change! Make donations to charities that support this cause, speak out to friends and family who still hold racist views, vote for progressive ideas, read about the black experience, diversify your social media feeds with people of colour.
This is directed at all reading this, not just you Shay! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
My prayer is for people to see all human beings as such, human beings. To feel the pain of others even if you have never and will never experience that same pain.
Mandy Huckins says
I completely agree with “M” and wish I had written that myself. Yes, now is the time to pray, think, reflect, read, listen, speak out, donate, and show love. I will be praying for justice for George Floyd and comfort for his family during this unimaginably difficult time. I will be praying that God will open the eyes, ears, hearts and minds of many Americans so that we can use this to move forward and come together rather than becoming more divisive.

I pray that anyone who is murdered receives justice. I pray that the terrorist groups funding and paying for these violent riots are brought to justice. And I pray that the media – who is currently foaming at the mouth with this but wouldn’t cover peaceful protests last weekend “due to Covid” of good people wanting to return to work – would find The Lord as well.
Jordan says
I’m sorry but I need to correct you. There are no terrorist groups funding the protests. The majority of the protests have been very peaceful until a small number of people have disturbed them. The majority of this country wants equality and peace.
Dena says
There are groups of people being funded to go in and disturb the peace and create violence. She is not talking about terrorist groups such as the ones you are used to thinking of like those from 9-11. These are terrorist groups within the US.
Aimee says
I don’t think the Media is “Foaming at the Mouth” with this. Sorry. They are working hard to cover situations that are changing by the minute. You need to put yourself in a reporter’s shoes. I see them working incredibly hard, and many are placing themselves right in the middle of situations. During the day, I see them covering peaceful protests. At night, I see them covering what would be considered not so peaceful protests. I think our President has done a fine job of protecting himself by disclaiming the Media and it’s disturbing, to say the least.
Mimi says
Thank you for speaking out, Shay. Prayer is good, but action is what is truly needed right now. Support black owned businesses and content creators. Educate yourself and your children about how to be anti-racist. Speak up when you see or hear something wrong.
As a mom of adopted and bio kids, my heart breaks for the moms out there that fear for the safety of their children.

Thank you Shay!! Cry and pray that’s what I have been doing. Canada is praying for your amazing country and all the countries. Let us all change and show the love God so desperately wants us to show!
Joan Walton says
Praying belongs to each of us but is private and apart. You have a large and influential platform here. I would love to see you use your strong faith to find and promote material which speaks to combatting racism and white privilege and post it on your blog. Add books that deal with this topic to your reading list each month. Maybe talk about what is happening in your church to promote understanding and inclusivity. M’s comment at the top is really well said.
Paula says
Joan – I completely agree!! I posted on social media this morning about my own white privilege, and some of the hateful comments are so sickening and sad. This is an article I posted also, which states it pretty plainly: https://www.tolerance.org/magazine/fall-2018/what-is-white-privilege-really
It’s a foreign phrase to so many, and so many assume they know what it means…but we can help raise awareness on behalf of all of our friends of color and we must! <3
Lizzie says
On my knees pouring my heart out to our Lord. My prayer list grows and grows. Thankful we have a God who is always there.

Thank you so much Shay- I love the prayer requests being posted to be able to pray for as a community.
Living in Minneapolis and working in the community that was hit hard has led to so many emotions. It’s been amazing to see our city pull together to help with clean up during the day and donating needed supplies and groceries for the hardest hit areas.
I agree with many of the above that education and asking God to show me the opportunities that He puts before me to stand up for others and help make a change. God created and loves ALL and wants us to follow His example. ?

As a wife of a police officer in MN not far from Minneapolis please pray for all first responders and their families. How do I explain to my kids who are seeing “kill all cops” “the only good cop is a dead cop” “F***K the Cops” graffitied and chanting all over on the news. All of this violence and hate isn’t helping the situation. I understand how the black community is afraid when dealing with police, but guess what so are the police. How can they not be afraid when they see all these people all over the news who want to kill them, how do they know when interacting with someone if thats the way they feel? Having both parties be on edge and scared is what leads to bad decisions and mistakes on both ends. I’m terrified, my husband is terrified – but he still goes out and protects everyone else’s families and puts his life on the line everyday leaving us home alone. This whole thing is a nightmare that will continue for us long after the protests are over.
Pamela says
Praying for you and your family. God Bless.
Smitha says
It’s unfortunate that the system has failed so much that it comes down to this. If it’s a nightmare for you, please think of the nightmare the black community has been going through for years. It’s going to take meaningful change, to rebuild the trust that was lost.
I understand your fear and will pray for your family and all first responders.. I know there are great cops out there! We need to hear from those great cops, on what they can do to serve and protect the black community. They need to speak up on how they can bring change.
There are lot of people hurting right now. The hurt and pain from a system that has been failing them for so long. The trauma
From all of that is the words you see, and the riots. Educating your children on what is happening and why it is happening is the right thing.
Arika says
To hear a grown man call out for his mama in his last moments shattered my heart to pieces.
White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo and How to be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi are both up first on my summer reading list. People have much too narrow a definition of racism. They think, “I’m not racist, I don’t hate people.” Allowing ourselves to live with such a limited view is the hallmark of privilege. Racism is pervasive. The books I mentioned above come highly recommended and I hope to learn a lot about my own privilege and bias while expanding on specific actions I can take every day as a woman and mother to be actively antiracist.
Shay, I work at a university in the midwest, and our vice provost recently sent out a great list of books and other resources to encourage us to grow in our awareness. She said the USC Race and Equity Center recently hosted a webinar called “Chinese Virus: Why Anti-Asian Racism is so Contagious.” I have not had time to view it yet, so I can’t personally recommend, but it sounds like important content. I’ve got it bookmarked to listen to on their YouTube channel.
Thank you for recognizing the need for a pause to reflect and grow.

In this moment, we all have some level of responsibility. The standard you walk past is the standard you accept. As Martin Luther King famously said, “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

Thank you Shay and Erika. We have been praying hard over here. I follow both of your blogs because I am a mother through adoption, and truly enjoy your stories. My son is 12 years old and African American. These last few days have been so heartbreaking. I pray for peaceful change because changes is long over due. It’s heartbreaking seeing what’s happening but strong leadership is needed to pull us through and to drive real change. I pray for peaceful protests, I pray that people use their ballot to speak instead of their violence, I pray that our children don’t feel worry over this and that we their parents teach them to love and respect all. Thanks for your post Shay!
Julia says
Hi Shay-Maybe you could do a “reader guest post” for each day this week? (Or the last few days or something…) I would love to talk over what is going on as a community here. I would love to hear from others how they are making a difference, what they are teaching their kids, etc. Your site is always such an uplifting and happy place and amidst all the social distancing it makes me sad not to read something here each morning. Just a thought, but if we can use this as a forum to share ideas as women and moms it might make us all feel better and feel like we’re doing something! Thanks and look forward to having you back soon.
PS for book suggestions, ‘Such a Fun Age’ was a good recent read about race!
Rachel says
Hi Shay, I appreciate the acknowledgment you’ve provided here. Your post today does not include the words race, racism, Black, or “killing by a police officer.” Consider reflecting on why that is. Vaguely referring to “what’s going on in our country” doesn’t name the action or the identity the problem. I’d love to see tomorrow’s post with a list of action steps for people (your readers have listed some wonderful options.). We’d also love to hear where you’ve donated money and what resources you’ve used to talk with your kids about white privilege.
Smitha says
I have to agree with Rachel here. As a Christian, I am praying too. Prayers are very important. No doubt on that. But I think you should consider using your huge platform to be more transparent… and actually acknowledge that racism as what’s happening in our country and what you can do and have been doing to bring awareness to the situation.
Abby says
I have to agree as well. I have wondered for awhile now why this topic has never come up prior to now on your blog, given that it has been occurring with too much regularity in recent years.
Mix and Match Mama says
A lot of really tragic topics haven’t appeared on my blog. I purposely haven’t shared anything about so many horrible events because I always want my brand to be an escape from what you see on the news. I am in no way qualified to be a platform for sharing horrible news coverage. This is actually the first time that I’ve shared something negative that’s happening in the world on my page because I feel it’s so important. I have always been and will remain a light during dark times.
Abby says
Thank you for responding and explaining!
Joan W says
I respect that and agree that your blog is not meant to be a place for discussing the news. However, you can still be a light in dark times by sometimes including books that offer a path to understanding and equality, share what’s happening in your church to encourage positive inclusivity, etc. without discussing the news. It can be about encouraging hope and Christian ideals of love, rather than escapism.
Mix and Match Mama says
Absolutely and that’s why I’m including some new things especially now for us to consider together next week when I’m back to posting. My blog is about me and my family, so I will always keep it upbeat, happy, light and cheerful as much as I can because that’s what I want to contribute to the internet. During this time, if people crave more than that, I fully understand their desire to seek that out instead from other online sources.
Cilla says
Agree. Shay it seems you’ve approved comments that don’t dissent too much. This is about a very specific systemic issue in our country. I’m going to unfollow if you can’t reflect that moving forward. White privilege and systemic racism are very real and praying is a great first step but this requires acknowledgment and action. As white women we benefit every day from this system and we have to be a part of the change. The resources to help learn are everywhere right now. No excuses.
Mix and Match Mama says
No, actually, I’ve only blocked hateful comments (from both sides). I am trying to stay off of my blog (and other people’s) this week to spend that time in prayer. For more about what I’ve been sharing, please see my Instagram for this week.
Cilla says
My comment wasn’t hateful. It was pointed. But you allowed a comment to remain that insinuates that property damage is more important than human lives, and that perhaps tells me something about how you think. I have seen your Instagram, and it doesn’t reflect doing the work for introspection. You have a huge reach. You don’t need to ask followers for suggestions, you could do that yourself and share, if that was important to you. This really isn’t about “sides.”
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t even know what you’re referring to, but I hear you and want to respect you. I’m asking you to respect that I’m keeping things light and happy. If you’re frustrated with me or my content, I support you looking elsewhere for blogs that speak more to you. I just want people to find what they’re looking for right now.
Emily R says
Please pray for my little five year old daughter who just had surgery on Friday to remove a bone tumor from her little leg.
Sammy says
I agree with M’s comments. It’s important to push for policy and change, acknowledge white privilege, and amplify Black voices at this time. I hope you will share more on those topics.
Danielle C says
. As a black woman I can tell you this does not help. It should not take a catastrophic event to an innocent person for you to ‘take time to pray’ This type of thing happens all. the. time. And it’s not always publicized. Do you even know who Rodney King is?? It does not always come in the form of police brutality either. Pray anyway. Try to be be more more mindful of who you allow in your friend groups and into your homes. I have read your blog for years and can honestly say I am disappointed. All of a sudden you care and want to bring awareness. You should want to do this anyway. All of this will blow over in a few months but unfortunately it will happen again. Do us all a favor and keep this same energy moving forward and not just because it’s in the news
Mariely says
I couldn’t agree more with this comment.
Lydia says
Hi Shay. I appreciate the sentiment and as a Christian, agree that prayers are needed. But action is needed right now to support our black community. This is a fight to not be discriminated against because of the color of their skin. There is so much work to be done and I hope that you can use your platform to share some of those resources. White people need to educate ourselves about so much, including our privilege, donate to causes that support black communities and be sharing voices of black people. It’s not enough to be “against racism”. Being anti-racist takes action. Below is a document that has been shared the past few days. I hope that it can be a great resource for you, your family and other readers.

Ann says
More than praying for businesses affected, police/fire people affected, etc, etc, I truly believe that we should be praying for the black and non-white communities, in general, that, on a DAILY basis, have to live with certain circumstances and difficulties that we cannot imagine. Imagine not being able to bird watch, walk down the street, make a mistake, get pulled over, etc., without being in fear for your life. Imagine watching your friends or family die unjustly because of those things. Imagine justice not being served and nothing changing. How angry would YOU be? I cannot even imagine. We need to keep that at the forefront of our thoughts. Let’s try to reframe how we think about what’s going on and instead of saying, “It’s horrible that an innocent black man was killed, but destroying property has to stop” to, “It’s horrible that property is being destroyed, but killing innocent black men and women has to stop.”
Norita says
Thank you for doing this. One of the great things about your blog is your faith.
Deb says
I went and looked through the people and accounts you follow on Instagram. Not a single black person and not a single Asian person. Imagine Ashby picking up your iPad and scrolling through your Instagram feed and seeing nothing but white, mostly blonde women. Maybe pray and reflect about that this week.
Mix and Match Mama says
I completely agree that my IG could be more diverse, but your statement isn’t entirely true.
STEPHANIE SANDERS says
Shay, don’t let anyone “shame” you for what you follow on Instagram. Really? Does that honestly say who you are as a person? No it does not. Up until recently, I didn’t follow many POC, but I do now. My eyes have been opened by Candace Owens, David J Harris Jr, Brandon Tatum, and other black conservatives who are amazing!
Pamela Kennedy says
Shay, just wanted to say thank you for always giving us positive, heartfelt, and sincere information to enjoy. Your blog is my “happy spot” and my “Mayberry”. You asked for prayer and that is exactly what we are doing. Don’t change a thing. You’re the mom who everyone wants, the friend that everyone needs, and the most devoted Christian daughter that parents could hope for. Just keep being you. You’re a beautiful soul. God Bless.
AIMEE BOYER FEATHER says
Thank you for this Shay. Prayer is so important. This is a very difficult time. I also hope that as Mothers, we can come together and help become more educated around the issue of Racism in America. Change starts with becoming more Aware, even if it’s uncomfortable. It also means Electing Officials that support Equal Rights for All, as well as creating actual Laws that Support the rights of Minorities and those of Color in America.
