Happy Thursday, friends!
As I head home from Boston this morning, I thought I’d leave you here with a new video tutorial on how I’m making my soft waves these days…
…I am not a beauty professional AT ALL, but I sure like to play around with different beauty products and techniques. Lately, many of you have asked me how I’m achieving my softer waves, so I thought I’d share! I’m currently doing two things that go very much against my “hair should be bigger and better in Texas” upbringing…I’m brushing out my curls AND I stopped using hairspray. (Someone please go pick my mother off of the floor…she is a devout hairspray user…) I am super pleased with the new results, and since it’s easy and fun to try new things, I thought I’d share it with you. I made a video of me doing my hair for you to watch and then, I have the details below 🙂 .
Check out the video here:
Okay, so if you watched the video, here are the products/random tidbits from it:
1: Lately, I have been washing my hair IN THE MORNING (gasp!) and letting it air dry an hour or so while I work before I actually do it (for about 20 years, I slept with it wet at night). I still hate blow drying my hair but thanks to my Double Shot dryer brush, it’s super easy to dry my slightly damp hair and style it after it air dries for a while. (You can learn more about why I love my Double Shot HERE). Also, I use this shampoo and this conditioner.
2: After I dry my hair with my Double Shot, I use this oil all over my hair before I section it off and start curling. This protects it from the heat and makes it super shiny and soft. I add it in on second day hair too to give it a bit of hydration and help it look fresh again.
3: I use these clips to section off my hair (I do three sections).
4: I use this hair brush…which at the end, is the STAR OF THE SHOW 🙂 .
5: I always use this 1″ curling iron.
6: I have been using my iron to “straighten” out my hair before curling. I don’t even think about it any more, I just do it. You’ll notice in the video that I quickly swipe it across my hair a few times and then curl. I read somewhere that if you do that, the follicle seals and it makes your curls smoother. I do not include the ends when I curl.
7: Now, I go in different directions (not always away from face) when I curl so that my curls are not too uniformed. I think this looks better when I brush it out at the end.
8: After all of my hair is curled, I take my big brush and lightly brush it all out to create softer waves.
9: Instead of using hairspray (which I swore by for like 30 years!), I’ve been using this matte texture spray. It holds my curls all day without making them sticky or stiff. It’s easy to brush all the way out the next day, and I think, it creates more texture than just “holding” it.
That’s it!
Softer waves.
What do you think? Do you like playing around with different products, tools and way to style your hair? I think it’s fun to try new things and change it up a bit. If you like my tank, it’s a great Amazon find too 🙂 .
Some soft waves for your Thursday!
See you guys tomorrow! xx

Ohh definitely trying this today. I use my straightener to smooth out the top first so it isn’t frizzy, then my curling iron. Good tip on the texturizing spray instead of hairspray!

It looks soooooooooooooooooooooo good! I actually bought a curling iron a couple of weeks ago to try something like this, but it was cheap, and I think the spring is too tight on the curling iron or something. Maybe I need to try this one!
Sarah says
I love this look on you, Shay! I’m a huge hairspray girl so maybe I’ll put it down and try it without 😉

Me too! It’s breaking a 30 year habit for me. 😉

Your hair is so beautiful with the waves of curls, ordering texture spray right now! REQUEST please, oh please…. have your mama do a Q &A on her favorite makeup, skin care, hair products. The reason so often you have said she is a no particular product grocery store type shopper of many of these products. She is so beautiful and always looks put together when you have pics, so inquiring mothers need info. Many Moms shop for items with groceries, as we sometimes just grab what we can for convenience and I have found many a great product(and plenty of duds) to use. I would so love to hear your Mama’s opinion on those items. Since I live by a can of hairspray at all times, I can relate. Would love to know her take on products. I think readers would LOVE, LOVE to hear or read her answers. There is an army of us buying milk, bread and then throw in a makeup, hair product and alittle skin care amongst the cereal boxes in the grocery cart!!

Your hair looks great. As a mature follower, I am curious what hair products your lovely mom uses. Her hair always looks great in Texas, Florida, Massachusetts…..etc. Thanks.

I can ask her!

Your hair always looks great! Out of curiosity (nosiness)?, I was wondering why you changed from washing at night, to the morning? You had a pretty efficient system.?
Mix and Match Mama says
I know, right?! I think, for right now, I have been enjoying watching a Netflix show in the bathtub at night, so that’s one of the reasons why I’m not showering. The second reason is that I am home most of the day (especially in the morning) working, so my hair has plenty of time to air dry while I work!

Will you please tell what cut you have? Do you have any layering? I love the blunt ends you always have! They look super healthy.
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh gosh, I probably don’t have the technical terms down at all, but I have her just add a few long layers throughout. I go through phases with shorter layers and/or no layers, but right now, I just have a few (not many) longer ones.
