Since we’re talking January/resolutions/working out/being active/staying fit today, I thought I’d tackle a few of your fitness related questions.
Just a reminder, I’m not a fitness expert AT ALL. I’m just a busy lady who loves to be active.
I personally think getting started is the hardest part. Whether it’s a new class or a new activity or just starting for the first time, new things are hard/scary/difficult sometimes. I would say my #1 tip is to make sure what you’re trying to do honestly and realistically fits into your schedule. If you know you’re not a morning person, then I wouldn’t try to workout in the morning (if you’re never going to make it there and always beat yourself up about it). If you know you hate running, don’t run. If you know you have this crazy energy at night, look for a night class. I think it’s all well and good to think “I will wake up every morning and exercise”, but if that truly does not fit into your schedule or your lifestyle, then find another time that does work.
Well, I don’t know that I did. You can go back in the archives here on my blog and check out loads of “pregnant Shay” content and you’ll see, I was just doing “my best”. I worked out about 4 days a week with each pregnancy…but I also don’t think anyone would have called me “fit”. I think when you’re pregnant, you have a daunting enough task of just growing a baby, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Walk, take a swim, or seriously, nap. Do what your body needs to do. Being fit shouldn’t really be a goal when you’re pregnant…being a healthy carrier for you baby is more like it.
I do not ever wear socks with shoes. Period. End of story. I don’t even wear socks with my winter boots when I’m out in the snow. Socks annoy me. They get bunched up. They squeeze my toes. I prefer foot freedom in there 😉 .
Typically, I run 4 days a week…of course, sometimes my weeks look different, but that’s the “norm” right now.
Neither of us follow macros or stick to any certain “diet” or food lifestyle other than, we eat gluten-free at home.
Well, I’m totally posting this comment because it’s so nice. Bahahahaha! My body has totally changed. I started this blog when I was 25…I’m now 41. A LOT HAS CHANGED. I would say that even though I was working out and lifting weights back in the day, I wasn’t lifting heavy enough weights (I like to lift heavy now!). For me, running+yoga+lifting weights is the perfect combination for this stage in my life.
I workout while they’re sleeping 🙂 . If my peeps are awake, there is a 99% chance that I won’t get my workout in.
He should! I totally forgot about that! I just made a note. You can catch a really good strength workout from Andrew HERE and then my WORKOUTS IN A WEEK too!
I personally think that a “runner’s high” is real. If you’ve tried running and aren’t feeling motivated/excited/that “high”, I’m going to guess running isn’t your thing…so move on. I think the worst thing we can do is force ourselves to do something (exercise-wise) that we hate. WE WILL NEVER KEEP IT UP. I love to run. I love yoga. I do those things! I do not love spinning classes at the gym, so I don’t do those any more. If you feel like you might enjoy it but aren’t “there” yet, make sure you check out MY GUIDE TO RUNNING for more ways to do it and love it.
That wraps up this Thursday! If you have any other questions you’d like me to answer, drop them in the comment section. I’m off to grab a few more Athleta pieces now at 20% off! Don’t forget, this sale ends on the 23rd!
One more thing…if you’re looking for a yummy and easy breakfast recipe to enjoy after your morning workout, HEAD HERE!
See you tomorrow! xx

How do you typically plan out your weekly work out schedule? How many strength, yoga days? Do you ever run on strength/yoga days? Do you have a distance goal for your running days? Haha, so many questions!! Thanks Shay! You do look fabulous!!
Mix and Match Mama says
All great questions (and thank you!)! I am a creature of habit (as you all know!), so I typically aim for two strength days and one yoga day a week which allows for four running days. I don’t stack them as I only have one hour to workout, with the exception of an occasional weekend long run, so I don’t have time to do more than one thing. Also, I like to split everything up so that I’m not lifting two days in a row or running two days in a row too.

You’ve been wearing Athleta for as long as I’ve known you…..AND THAT’S A LONG TIME! You always look so cute in their pieces!
Kelly W says
I never wear socks either! My family and friends think I’m crazy but I just can’t wear socks with any of my shoes or boots! 😂
Jenny Suszka says
Same!!!!
Ranisa Brletich says
I am so curious about the sock thing?! How?! What?! Really?! I don’t get it?! Even in boots? How do you not get blisters? Was there a transition period? Do new shoes give you a hard time? How bad do your shoes smell? What do you do about the smell of or when it happens?
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t get blisters more than the average person (I don’t think)? I don’t know? I haven’t worn socks in about 10 years, so now, I don’t even think about it.

My favorite Athleta item is the Embrace sports bra with molded cups… no more lost or bunched up removable pads. It is currently $20 which is a steal for a good sports bra. Also since the brand runs pretty true to size it’s always a good idea to look at the Final Chance section. The items are not returnable, but if you know your size the item should work.
sandi says
I forgot to add that I despise socks…
Lori Whittington says
I have so many no sock questions. LOL How do your shoes and feet not stink?! How do you not have blisters on your heels from new shoes? Is this just a Shay thing or does your family not wear them either? 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
I would say that my little girls never wear them either and my big kids just recently started wearing them. I’m not a sweater…and honestly, my shoes don’t stink really. IDK? They just drive me MAD! Haha!
Marisa Tompkins says
Sock sister! I loathe socks!!! Straight Jackets for your feet! I never wear them with shoes. NEVER when working out. Maybe around the house without shoes or with Hunter or riding boots but I still get annoyed with them!
Laura says
Speaking of comfort and exercise…Will you ever post pictures of your home gym? Have a great day!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! At this point, the only reason I haven’t is my own laziness. I need to!
Jenny N says
How did I miss that you never wear socks?! I don’t wear them with my Uggs because they are already insulated, but I never thought about not wearing them with my tennis shoes. I might have to try it because I struggle with finding socks that don’t make my toes feel like they are suffocating while I am working out. I hate tight socks!!
Karah Stracener says
I love Athleta…….time to go buy some new workout gear. I do not understand how you cannot wear socks. LOL. My feet would freeze!! I have been getting up early at least 3 times a week to work out before my crew wakes up for the day. It has changed my world and I love it.

Please share more of the things you’re buying your little girls, especially if it’s budget friendly (Target, Old Navy, etc). My daughter is almost 7 and I feel like these are tricky ages to shop for! 🙂
WhittyWife (Lindsay) says
We’re currently working on finishing our home gym, and I’d love to see yours for inspiration!
Okay, so no way could I wear booties or many other shoes without socks, but I hate wearing socks at home or without shoes on. Haha! And don’t even get me started on people who wear them in bed! 🤮🤣
Hallie says
Athleta is my favorite brand too! Can you share what you are thinking about ordering from this sale?? Thank you!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I already ordered this morning! I bought two pairs of stash tights and two seamless racerback tanks!
Faith Kapp says
I appreciate this post so much! I hate running, always have. I feel like some people think you should do what they do. I’m also not a morning person 😆 so this just further acknowledge I should not run in the morning or ever! Lol
Tina says
Okay…I’ve been reading your blog for at least 11 years, but somehow missed the fact that YOU DON’T WEAR SOCKS?!? 😱😆 Personal question…do your feet not smell??😂 I’m constantly telling my kids to wear socks, because just ONCE without them seriously ruins their shoes forevermore.😷😝 I personally loathe wearing socks with certain types of shoes, but am afraid I’ll ruin them. I am intrigued!🤣
Mix and Match Mama says
Nope. No socks. I’ve never thought a pair shoes were ruined because I didn’t wear socks either. I don’t know, I find them so annoying in my shoe that I much prefer my toes free 😉 .
Tina says
So funny!☺️ I’m just now seeing your reply, and am currently wearing boots with NO socks.😱😂 We were running late for church and I thought, “If Shay can do it, I can too.”🤣 Put my boots on and ran out the door. Lol
Mix and Match Mama says
Woohoo! I bet your toes feel really free 🙂 .
Jennibell says
The sock thing is so funny. We took the dog out after work and it was MUDDY. I went to the park straight from work so just changed into some running shoes I keep in the car. I didn’t want to wear them home so put my muddy socks and shoes in a bag and put my boots back on w/out socks. I tell you this because YOU were the first person I thought of driving home…”does Shay really wear dress boots without socks?!?” Guess the answer is “yes” – ha! Feels really weird to me….or maybe weird that someone I don’t even know IRL is who I first think of???
