Happy Wednesday, friends!
It’s another edition of SHAY’S WAYS, and this one here might be one of my very faves 🙂 .
Over the years, I’ve observed some of my favorite ladies (I’m talking to you Mom and Grandmother), read countless Francophile books, and listened to dozens and dozens of podcasts which have encouraged me to do little things each day in order to “elevate” it. You know…little things I do to make that boring, normal old Wednesday feel just a touch more special.
Because why not?
Life is short and tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, so if we can take a regular old day and incorporate a few little habits/ideas/things to make it feel more special, we probably should. Even if no one else notices us doing these things, we’ll notice. We’ll appreciate the difference. We’ll feel the contentment in the ordinary when we’ve taken the time to slightly “elevate” it.
Amen and amen.
I could have made this list much, much longer, but I stopped myself with twenty one.
Settle in, it’s MY 21 KEYS TO ELEVATING THE EVERYDAY…
1: LIGHT CANDLES
In the morning, while you work, before dinner, at night…just light the candles whenever you can. A normal work space instantly gets elevated with a candle burning. (Side note, right now, you can get some of my very favorite fall candles on sale!)
2: PLAY MUSIC
Not just any music, play music that makes you feel like you’re in a hotel lobby or a nice restaurant. Music that isn’t taking over the space but adding to it. Music that’s in the background and instantly conjures up a feeling of elegance. I love French cafe music, music from The Great American Songbook, classical music…anything soothing and relaxing.
3: MAKE YOUR BED
I mean, how can my day feel elevated with an unmade bed? It can’t. As soon as I wake up, I make my bed. The difference in how I feel when I walk through my room with a bed that’s made and a bed that’s unmade is substantial. I also think that getting ready for bed at night and unmaking the bed is a ritual that should not be missed. To me, it feels way more luxurious to unmake my bed before settling in with my book for the night than getting into a messy bed.
4: GET DRESSED
Every day. This one is big for me, and I don’t always do it, but I certainly always try. When I think about movies with leading ladies that I love, they’re always “dressed”. In every Nancy Meyers movie, even if the leading lady isn’t “dressed up”, she’s wearing really pretty “at home clothes” (think Cameron Diaz in the all white outfit at the beginning of The Holiday when she’s kicking her boyfriend out of the house). She’s not “dressed”, but she looks effortless, put together and polished. When 5:00 rolls around and my family is all home for dinner, I don’t know, I just always feel so much better physically and mentally if I’m dressed and not still in my dirty workout clothes from 5:30 that morning.
5: WASH YOUR HAIR
I was once reading a a little Francophile book and the author wrote something to the effect of “you never regret washing your hair”. Well, that hit me between the eye balls. I know washing our hair can be a royal pain, but I really don’t think I’ve ever regretted washing it…and I often regret not washing it. Need a mood booster on a Wednesday? Wash your hair.
6: USE GOOD PENS
I love writing with Paper Mate Flair Pens. I feel like my handwriting is better, I slow down and take my time, I just feel good when I pull one out to use. Whatever you favorite writing instrument is, having them on hand is just a simple little way to elevate the day.
7: USE REAL FLATWEAR AND DISHES
Even on days when I’m eating lunch at home by myself while my family is away…and it’s typically some sort of salad or wrap from Trader Joe’s (nothing fancy)…I pull out real dishes and real flatware. Even the most basic meal that you didn’t make feels instantly more special on a real plate with a real fork and knife. Speaking of eating…
8: SIT DOWN TO EAT
Years ago I made the decision to always sit down when I eat. Sometimes, I sit at the table, sometimes outside, but I always sit when I eat…including snacks! I don’t even remember which book I was reading that encouraged this, but once I started sitting down to eat everything, I noticed quickly how much more I paid attention to what I was eating and savored and enjoyed it just because I was sitting.
9: LISTEN TO PODCASTS THAT GROW YOU
I love me a podcast. I kind of listen to them all day long. I listen in the car, I listen as I putter around my house, I listen when I’m doing chores, on an airplane…I really like to listen. This year though, I started editing the podcasts that I listened to because honestly, too many of them were just kind of trashy reality TV recap podcasts which is fun on occasion, but not really doing anything for me as a person. Now, I try really hard to listen to podcasts about parenting, travel, faith, ones about entertaining and lifestyle topics, health and wellness is a new genre I’ve really gotten into and then I still seek out “sweet” podcasts just for laughs (I’m talking to you The Office Ladies!). I just realized I was filling my brain with “something”, so I should probably make an effort to fill it with “something beneficial”.
10: GO FOR A WALK
Not for exercise but just to enjoy being outside. I never regret stepping outside and getting a minute of fresh air, saying hi to a neighbor, listening to the birds and just moving. Even if this walk is only five minutes, it instantly boosts my mood and gives me an extra bit of energy.
11: GROW HERBS
Herbs make me so happy. There is something so satisfying about adding fresh herbs to your home cooked meal. You don’t have to have a garden (although, kudos if you do!), just a little pot of herbs is enough to make each meal a bit more special.
12: READ
You knew I would include this one. You know why I don’t listen to audiobooks? I personally enjoy reading because it’s just about the one thing I do that I give my 100% undivided attention to and do not/cannot multi-task. I can’t read and fold laundry. I can’t read and exercise. I can’t read and check my emails or Instagram or even talk to my family. When I read, I can only read. My brain is pretty crazy chaotic all day long, but when I read, it gets to relax and unwind and only focus on one thing.
13: CREATE A COFFEE BAR
My little coffee area makes me happy. I have my favorite mugs, spoons, pretty paper napkins that I swap out seasonally, and my favorite creamers/sweeteners. My coffee time is elevated just because I have a nice little area dedicated to that happy space.
14: STOP SCROLLING
I just think endlessly and mindlessly scrolling on our phones is not a way to elevate our everydays. Spending time on things that are inspiring (hello, Pinterest and certain influencers) for specific reasons and for set limits of time is fabulous. Mindlessly scrolling a bunch of nothingness, not so much.
15: WEAR HEELS
Yes! Listen, I know they’re not practical for every single day, but don’t we just walk a bit taller and feel a bit more put together with just the tiniest heel? It doesn’t have to be a stiletto either as a heel on a bootie elevates that pair of jeans instantly.
16: HAVE A SIGNATURE SCENT
Hi, my name is Shay, and I adore seasonal perfumes and scents. I once heard on a podcast that you should have a scent for every season or a scent for different times of the day (for example, a “work” scent and then a “dinner out” scent). I personally like to change mine out seasonally (my spring/summer scent and my fall/winter scent). Spritzing on something that smells yummy always makes me feel good…even if I’m not leaving my house and wearing my “comfy” clothes. Speaking of which…
17: ENJOY YOUR “GOOD” CLOTHES AND SHOES
I’ve read so many Francophile books that preach this message: wear your nice things and don’t save them. I’m not saying I plan on wearing a ball gown to Target, but I probably should wear my nicer sweaters and boots on a random Tuesday to run errands instead of just pulling on my sweatshirt and sneakers. I mean…I have them right there in my closet and invested in them, so I should wear them as often as possible, right?
18: CLEAN OUT YOUR HANDBAG
Well you probably know that I love me a handbag. Whether I’m switching out my bags or just stopping to tidy, I try to take any opportunity I can to clean it out. Discarding random trash/paper/wrappers in my purse, editing the lipstick pile accumulated at the bottom, and removing four pairs of sunglasses (why do I always end up with so many floating around in my purse?) always makes me feel way more elevated as I go about my day. There’s nothing less “elevating” than digging through your bag looking for your wallet/keys/whatever while someone is standing there waiting for you to produce said object.
19: MAKE DINNER
I just think an elevated every day probably includes a home cooked meal. Right?! I’m not saying there isn’t a time and place for take out or eating out, but a good home cooked meal at the table with my people always elevates my day.
20: PUT ON NICE PJS
Years ago, I read in a book that we should throw away all of our old ratty tees/sweats that, although comfy, look a mess and instead, we should wear “nice” clothes to bed. I’m not talking about expensive clothes, just clothes that perhaps don’t have holes in the sleeve or stains. That’s all. When I finally decided to do this, I was slightly embarrassed at what I had been wearing as pajamas. Spoiler alert: I wouldn’t want to answer the door/an emergency in the middle of the night where I would be forced to go outside in said garments.
21: USE WHITE BEDDING
And finally, I’m a big fan of solid white bedding for an elevated look. I personally like flannel sheets, but you know, some people like the fancy high thread count stuff. Either way, all white looks more “I’m at a nice hotel” than any other color and the monochromatic look of all white always looks inviting and cozy.
And those are 21 of my KEYS TO ELEVATING THE EVERYDAY.
Now, I’m POSITIVE that you have your own keys! You guys are my people, and I know you incorporate certain little things into your day to make you feel a bit more elevated. Please share! I would love to know and include more into my daily routine too.
One more super fun thing to add in today…
…right now, Life in Lilac is offering my readers 15% off my three favorite fall/winter candles in THIS BUNDLE!
Here’s how this went down (because let me assure you, this isn’t “the norm”). I was burning two different Life in Lilac candles in my house that I love last week, so I emailed them directly (as they’ve been very sweet to work with in the past), and asked if my readers could get a discount code on my favorite fall scents. Within minutes they emailed me back and enthusiastically said YES! Isn’t that awesome? They asked me which three I wanted to bundle and BETTER THAN PIE (a yummy fall apply scent), BACKYARD BONFIRE (a nice wintery/smoky scent) and FALL FEVER (it’s like cinnamon pumpkin goodness) were all three I had loved in years past and currently burning/had at home, so that’s what I selected.
I love that these jars are white, that the candles burn clean, and that the scents fill up a room nicely every time.
Thank you, Life in Lilac!

It got away from me this week! I started it and then life happened and well, now, it’s Wednesday. Agh!
Elspeth says
I love love love this post! I always try to start my day with purpose and not try to rush through it! Another way i elevate my day is really try to be present in conversations with friends and family!

Mix and Match Mama says
Being fully present in my life is something I’ve been working on all year long. Not kind of present but fully, fully present. I couldn’t agree with you more!
Laura A Fuller says
Agree 100%!! I would love to know more about the podcasts you’re listening to. I like one that jumps right in to the topic and teaches me something, stretches me, etc.
I also cleaned out all my old pajamas a year or so ago. I’ve been buying one new nightshirt/PJ set every couple months. It just feels better!
London says
I would love some podcast recommendations also!
Melissa Cooper says
I neoyorquino also love to know which podcasts you recommend, Shay – thank you! Great post as always. 🙂
Tiffany Buhr says
I would love to see podcast recs too! Always looking for more!
Dana Grugan says
Yes! This is what I wanted to know too. Always looking for a good, uplifting podcast that can help me to become a better version of myself ❤️
Sarah C says
It’s super small, but sitting to enjoy the first sip of coffee just brightens my whole morning. Nothing tastes as good as that very first sip and so I always make sure to stop, sit, and savor it!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes, yes and YES! I agree!
Emilee says
I love these little inspirational posts!
Jami Romano says
I really did this post 🙂 some of the tips I already do and some I will be sure to incorporate. I immediately put on the great American songbook playlist and New. I would love it 🙂 reminds me of father of the bride for some reason and that makes my heart so happy! Have a wonderful day ◡̈
Mix and Match Mama says
YES!! Steve Tyrell did all of the music in Father of the Bride (Diane Keaton says his name actually when they’re sitting at the table discussing who can/cannot come to the wedding…she says Steve and Stephanie Tyrell which is him and his wife!). I love him!
Dana P says
Aww…i didn’t know that! Our family has the Father of the Bride movies practically memorized, but I’ve never noticed!
I LOVE these posts!
Jami Romano says
Love that!!!
Tina says
Okay…this is one of my favorite movies of all time and I’ve NEVER noticed that! (Gonna have to watch it today.☺️) One thing that always elevates my mood/day is a clean car. (Unfortunately, my car does not stay nearly as clean as yours on the regular. Lol) I had a friend who used to tease me because I made the statement that my car “drove better” when I washed it.😄 But it’s true! It never drives smoother than when it’s clean inside and out. 🤷🏼♀️
Jennibell says
I love everything about this post! Everything. A part of that last phrase hit me so hard I wrote it down and will be repeating it, “Do not live passively, live passionately”.
Yes, I have additions but I’m hoping this will be so popular you make it a quarterly post 🙂 I’m going to pick 10 things to start doing this month, starting with ordering your candle pack and intentionally burning them, even if it’s just “for me” 🙂
Thank you for this awesome Wednesday post!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Wow! Your comment has blessed ME!! Thank you, thank you for always being an enthusiastic member of this little community. I am so blessed to do life with women like you! xx
Katie says
Would love to know the podcasts you listen to –especially about faith! Love this post 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
I need to make one big list. I’m writing that down. Maybe I can get this shared on Friday or Saturday?
Amy says
Yes I would love to know some of the podcast you listen to. I would also like your thoughts on why you listen to them!! I listen to The Simple Sophisticate because of you. If I listen to the office ladies do I have to have watched the show? Love this blog!!
Emily says
Yes – health and fitness! 🙂 Thank you for helping us flourish!
Kathy says
You are so right! Everything you mention here is so good. I love anything that can make an ordinary day feel special (although October days are pretty magical).
I like to put apple slices, orange slices, cloves, pumpkin spice, whatever I might have in a simmer pot on the stove. When the kids come inside the house, they always say,”Oh, it smells so good in here!” It’s so welcoming and makes a house feel like home.
Mix and Match Mama says
I should do that today! You’re right, that would be a very easy way to elevate my afternoon.
Pam English says
Decorate your space seasonally. Even if it’s small. Change out those pillows to represent Fall, Winter, Spring and even Summer. I love adding little seasonal pops of things in my kitchen or desk. It just makes me happy and keeps me intuned with where we are in the year. Loved your list today and #14 is one I’m trying to rid myself of and work toward more mindful use of my time. I love starting my day reading your posts though and absolutely will still incorporate into my morning . Thank you for your years of blogging such a positive space.
Mix and Match Mama says
YES!!!! Of course, yes! I should I included this one too! Thank YOU, Pam! You are truly a blessing to me, and I am so grateful you take time to be a part of this community. xx
Kristen says
Love all these.. question, I love burning candles but I always forget about them… EEK! Do you light and relight every time you leave the house?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! If I ever light one in a not “normal” spot in my house, I put an alarm on my phone just as an extra reminder to blow it out before leaving. The two main candles I burn all day long (kitchen and my office), I always remember to light and relight.
Beth Knecht says
Yes! I love elevating the everyday! As you said we aren’t promised tomorrow and I learned that so well these last few years! Nothing makes me feel more me than a shower and washing my hair! I feel I w grown so much over the years listening to informative and inspiring podcasts! I, also, feel like some sort of homemade dessert elevates my day. My grandma used to always have a cookie or dumpling or pie on the counter, and I always feel like the day isn’t as complete without it!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes, Beth! I love this addition to our list!!
Sheaffer says
What a great list! And Life in Lilac candles are truly amazing.
Mix and Match Mama says
Truly!
Grace says
Thank you so much for sharing. There were so many “ways” on your list that I often follow but just rush through them. I definitely need to read this morning. I feel you on the PJs for sure! Game changer! Hugs. Have a wonderful day Shay!
Mix and Match Mama says
Hugs to you!!! xx
Amy says
Not rushing in the mornings. A calm quiet morning starts all of us off on the right foot. I accomplish this by getting lunches and outfits laid out the night before. I even lay out my clothes. Also, my husband does donut Friday for us. It’s something special every week to treat the kids for all their hard work. We have been doing for a couple of years now.
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes, yes and yes! I love these, Amy!
Whitney Collins says
I love these ideas! The fall/winter scent link isn’t working. Can you share again please?
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m so sorry about that! It’s fixed. I’m wearing it right now 🙂 .
Rachel says
I truly enjoyed this post, thank you for sharing! I realized recently that I prefer investing in things (whether with time, money, or intentionality) that make my daily life better. Lighting a candle in my dining room is one of those things. I kept “saving” it for when people are over – makes no sense, so now I light it right after walking in the door every afternoon! I also recently increased my grocery budget to more thoroughly enjoy the shopping and cooking process. I would love to see a list of podcasts you enjoy!
Mix and Match Mama says
I love this!!! Such a great way to elevate the everyday.
Shelley Holden says
Love this post! I do many if these things but want to include even more….
I would add have fresh flowers in your home. I get them every week at Trader Joe’s and have so much fun arranging them.
Use nice soaps and lotions every day, don’t just save them
Seasonal decorations also elevate the day!
Thanks for your tips! Always love them and the reminder to make every day special.
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes!! Every single day is truly such a gift.
Debbie Alsip says
Nothing to add to the ways to elevate but blog ideas. It sounds like you’re on the podcast list, and I hope other readers leave suggestions, too. I would also love to read a post about your favorite hand bags. I LOVE hand bags and buy and sell them regularly. I always research before buying. I’m thinking Goyard, Gucci, LV, etc.
K.K. says
I love the list you have!! So inspiring and great reminders to enjoy the everyday!!
A few I can add from my own “list”:
1. Write letters to people you love and mail them. There is something so special about sending “old fashioned” messages that let people know you care, and I know I get excited when I receive a letter in the mail also.
2. Sometimes drive with no music or noise. I love podcasts and music on, but every once in awhile, I turn it all off, and it’s so helpful in a weird way. I think I enjoy the drive more actually. (I also don’t have little ones, and that’s probably a huge factor!)
3. Start planning a new trip, or a bucket list trip. Sometimes, I need to stop and re-center on some things that I’m looking forward to, and taking ten minutes to research a town or restaurant I might visit gives me a mental break when I need it! And one day, I WILL be taking a trip with M&M Travel!! 😉
4. Last one…Giving myself a number – such as 20. Finding 20 items in my home that I’ll donate, give to a friend, or just throw out – depending on what it is. That’s so refreshing as well!
Thanks for starting this conversation, Shay!! Happy Wednesday!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh gosh, these are all four GOLD!!!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to so thoughtfully share each one. xx
Lisa D says
Love these little “tips” that elevate the everyday.
I always start my day with coffee and devotional time. I love to have fresh flowers in the house year round, flowers make me so happy and a small bouquet is not expensive. Seasonal decor and pretty sofa pillows add a special touch. I have pretty plates that I use daily for our lunches, just for my husband and me. 😊
Life is truly so short and we are not guaranteed long life. Enjoy the special things. And take that vacation! 💜
Mix and Match Mama says
And take that vacation 🙂 .
Jessica Tribbett says
Great list! I’ve incorporate many of these over the years of reading your blog and they truly elevate my day. I enjoy fresh herbs as well but between my black thumb and the CO sun I struggle keeping them alive. We got an Aerogarden last Fall and I love having fresh herbs year round. And it looks nice on our counter!

Mix and Match Mama says
Thank YOU so much for sharing this, Jessica!!!
Paige says
I love this so much! I’m encouraged to slow my roll a bit. I started getting up earlier years ago after fallowing your blog and I’ve never looked back. I cherish my quiet mornings with my coffee and my daily bible reading in the quiet. I know I said quiet twice but geez how did I ever start my morning without that quiet settling time?!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I couldn’t agree more, Paige. My mom used to always consider herself a night owl and slept in as late as possible until about 10 years ago, and now, she’s a changed woman. She craves her morning time, and I would say it’s probably the very best part of her day. I truly don’t think people get it until they do it.
Tish says
Love your blog, Shay! You mentioned your mom moving from night owl to a morning person. Wondered if you have ever shared what your parents schedule/day looks like now with kids out of the house. We are a short few years away from being empty nesters so I think about this from time to time. Plus, I just adore your parents. (not that we’ve actually met! haha!)
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwwwww! I could ask them! My dad still works a “9 to 5” but my mom is retired, so her schedule looks much different than it did when she had kids at home and a full time job.
Valerie Stults says
Thank you for sharing!!! I can tell when I do some of these things it makes my day better!!!
Deena says
Shay! You are such a blessing. Have followed you for many years. I love all things cozy! These are good reminders for me! I can tend to get overwhelmed and not do these things to elevate my day. Doing them (at least some of them) will help. So thank u! I’m gonna try these candles. Excited! Fall is my favorite season!!
Mix and Match Mama says
You will love these candles, Deena. Thank YOU for being a bright spot in my day. xx
Martha says
I grew up with parents, aunts and uncles who all drank tea so I never became a coffee drinker. I have several cups of tea each day and though I will sometimes use a favourite mug, I usually drink my tea from a cup and saucer. I have many to choose from and I rotate them constantly so they all get used. When you drink from a cup and saucer you automatically slow down, use both hands, admire the pattern, maybe think about where the teacup came from, etc. I love this little ritual. Thank you for putting into words #14! I find myself slipping into “mindlessly scrolling a bunch of nothingness” when I tell myself I’m tired at the end of the day and need to unwind, but that mindless scrolling never makes me feel refreshed it just robs me of my time. There are so many better ways to unwind! Thanks Shay!
Mix and Match Mama says
What a wonderful observation, Martha! Thank you so much for sharing. I love, loved your comment. xx
Maddie Giamello says
This post is one of my favorites!!! The not sleeping in old pajamas one hit hard, whoops, I need to get on that asap! Would also love to see a list of the podcasts you’re loving! I started office ladies because of you and love it!
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m going to get my list together and share ASAP!
MelanieL says
What a timely post as I thought of you this morning when I turned on my “YouTube Fireplace” 🙂 The mornings have been chilly and just seeing the flames, hearing the crackling, getting under my cozy blanket, reading and sipping coffee…it’s an experience I LOVE and look forward too! I think anything we love and look forward to each day elevates our lives and sets us up to have a great day!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes, yes, yes! I love that idea!
Sandra says
Great list Shay 🙂
This might go without saying, but buy the good coffee or beans for that coffee bar. Enjoy that first morning coffee!
Sabrina says
I love these “keys” so much! I do my best to elevate everyday and there are a few I can incorporate here! I agree about making the bed every day – I need to be better about this. I love how you noted the feel of your room with a made bed…so true! I also loved that you mentioned having seasonal magazines last week to fill extra time instead of scrolling the phone – and you mentioned that again today. I am going to make an extra attempt to put my phone down and elevate the day around me instead of mindlessly scrolling. And lastly, I am going to incorporate “sitting down to eat”. I live alone so, oftentimes, dinner is on the couch in front of the TV and that’s certainly not elevating…I can do better!
I love playing “hotel” music in my office all day long, seasonal napkins at my coffee bar, white bedding, afternoon walks (fresh air is my favorite!), encouraging podcasts, and nice PJs….and that first sip of coffee in the morning is the best way to start my day elevated! 🙂
Have the best day!
Mix and Match Mama says
Sabrina, thank YOU for the sweet and very thoughtful comment. I hope you have the best “elevated” day! xx
Maryellen says
I love this Shay. I am turning 64 the end of October. I retired last year on Jan 31st after 40 plus years at same job. I make it a must whether I am leaving the house or staying home to get dressed, put on my make up, fix my hair. Oh what a difference it makes in my mood and my joy level. I have been incorporating things I especially enjoy into my day. I am a list maker and kept up the effort even after retirement. If I don’t have a track to run on the day will slip away mostly wasted. Since I’m retired I don’t stress about the list, what I don’t complete I move to the next day. Retirement gives me that freedom.
Thank you for your wonderful ideas . . . ♥
Mix and Match Mama says
Good for YOU!!!! I am so inspired by your comment today. xx
grace says
Like so many other readers and followers, I too loved this post – in fact, I loved it so much I wrote down how much I adored it while journaling this morning during a late breakfast. I’ve followed this blog for years (since 2015) and reading your posts in the morning always makes my heart smile and sends me off on a good note to begin the rest of the day. Thank you for these fun, inspirational entries!
Faith says
I feel this! I need to get my life together and I agree with this post so much. I love listening to podcasts – in fact I miss one of my very favorite ones and REALLY REALLY wish new episodes were out but I understand these two women are super busy. Sigh……so what other podcasts do you recommend?
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwwwww! You are too sweet!!! You know, I just don’t think that’s where God wants us to put our energy. We spent time together just this morning, and it’s so nice to be able to do it without having to mess with podcasting/have it on the brain. xx
Faith says
Everything has its season. I bet it was very nice! 😊
Kacey says
So many great little gems! A few of my faves…
1. Candles, of course!! And this season of Fall scents is the BEST! I just recently found Arbor Made candles, they have refillable containers which is really cool and the scents are incredible! From one candle lover to another, just had to share.
6. Also a paper mate lover, but my go to are inkjoy gel! There’s just something about a good pen
9. If you haven’t listened to “Live in Love w. Lauren Akins” its a great family, faith + parenting podcast. I highly recommend!
13. yes, yes, YES!!! A freshly brewed cup of coffee, the smell, the taste, nothing beats it on those early mornings.
xo
Mix and Match Mama says
I love, love, love your list!!
Jessica Foster says
Number 20 is a big one for me. I am a hoarder of pajamas and agree 100% with what you’ve said. My mother used to say “ you have better dreams”.
Meg says
Who are your favorite influencers/bloggers to follow?

The best way to see is probably to check my IG and see who I’m following. I’m pretty picky about who I want in my feed (happy, seasonal and inspiring only!), and thankfully, I have found so many!

Thank you for sharing these tips. I love them all. I come home every day from work and immediately light my candles. I also love to play music when I am picking up the house or cooking. Michael Buble and Steve Tyrell are my favorites to listen to. EEEKK thanks for the tip on pjs, I need to clean out my pajama drawer. Have a happy Wednesday Shay!

Love these ideas so much! I just lit a candle after reading this, so cozy.
I’ve been trying to “elevate” my feet on the wall at night, I’d heard it helps with circulation. I love to do it while I read or listen to bedtime songs with my kids…it feels so good!
Thanks SO much for your post! It really is the little things every day

Shay, this post reminds me of the phrase “Romancing the Ordinary.” There is actually a book by this title that you might enjoy reading.
Also, regarding #9 and the “trashy reality TV recap podcasts”… I really enjoyed listening to the Bestie Breakdown when you and Erika would break down a specific topic and give us a glimpse into your lives or “life hacks” or tips that we could implement in our own lives. This last season of the podcast seemed to just be a discussion of the latest Bravo TV shows that you watched. With 2 young kids, I don’t get to watch “adult” shows very often and could not relate to what you were discussing on your podcast. Will you please go back to your old format of breaking down certain topics? I’m not trying to be rude but just want to offer some constructive criticism!
Mix and Match Mama says
I am going to look that book up right now. Honestly? I think the Bestie Breakdown has retired, but we value your feedback *should* it ever make a comeback 🙂 .

I need to invest in some new pajamas, what brands are your favorites?
Mix and Match Mama says
You know, I’ve been really into the quality and softness of Soma’s for the last year or so.

I loved this post! I always burn my candles and wear nice pjs, too. I also ALWAYS put on my makeup. One thing I started doing a few years ago is wearing matching bras and panties. Nobody knows but me, but I feel pretty from the inside out.

You have given me so many ideas to try and calm my crazy life down.

I love these type of posts you do! I agree with the above comments, I’d love to hear about the podcasts your listening to and if there are episodes you recommend. Thank you!

I have been saving a specific candle for “a special time” and I was inspired to light it after reading this, and it has certainly elevated my work from home day! Thanks for being my very favorite “blogger”, I love all of your posts, reading all of the comments (especially ones you reply to), and making your yummy recipes! What an inspiration you are to so many 🙂

Thank you for sharing your tips, you and everyone on here have great ones. I don’t have anything different, have a morning/night routine, I’m retired and it’s so easy to let the days go by. I do love my morning French press coffee with fresh ground organic beans with real half and half. I do have decent pajamas, have a nice comfortable bed with a good pillow. I’m trying to get back in the habit of reading scriptures, and I’m looking forward to reading what your Bible podcasts are. I walk every morning. Getting back in the habit of getting dressed, wearing makeup, I have to ask myself “did I comb my hair this morning?” Lol, this is getting too long but I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your posts, your positivity on life, Christ and family! I really look forward to reading your posts.
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh goodness, thank you so much! I appreciate blog readers like you more than you know!

Hi Shay! Great post today! I’m not normally a candle person but you’ve inspired me! I feel like at one point you gave some “rules” for candles like when to trim the wick and how long to burn or something like that. Can you remind us your tips?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! Never trim the wick of a brand new candle. Light it and allow the entire top of the candle to liquify before blowing it out (that prevents the cave affect happening). After that, from that point forward ALWAYS trim the wick. I use wick trimmers and then put them in my dishwasher when they’re super dirty.

What a WEEK it’s been! Trust me…next week I plan on elevating each and every moment!

White sheets drive my bonkers… even if it is a little stripe or pattern I have to have something that lets me know this is the top of the sheet. Wrestling with a fitted sheet and trying to find the sides and top made me invest in small patterned sheets. I also love my mismatched PJ bottoms and random old t-shirts but I’m sure my family would love to look at me in something else.
I enjoy the subtle scents of a diffuser, citrus, lavender, whatever suits me that day. Our daughter’s love candles and lament not being able to light them in college so I’m thinking diffusers might make a great Christmas gift for them
Last year I refinished a china cabinet we inherited when my mother in law passed away. It is over 100 years old and not a single nail was used in the entire piece. I have several mix and matched plates that belonged to my mother in law, great grandmother, grandmother and my mom. It is fun setting a table knowing that I am using plates with a history. They need to be used more!

I agree, Sandi!! Yes, yes! Thank you for sharing!!

Thanks Shay! Love this! Could we get a top 10 Francophile/ Elevating your life book list? Sounds like a perfect Mix and Match Mama blog post 🙂

I can totally round those up!

LOVE this! I’m a little late to the party, but I’m wondering if anyone has suggestions for good, less expensive candles in France or Europe? I know they have nice high-end ones, but I like to burn them regularly and those would burn up my budget. Ha!
I love hearing everyone’s favorites! Here are a few of mine:
1. My friend told me she gets out of bed to position herself in her house with the best view of the sunrise and a cup of tea. It works!
2. Having a balanced breakfast helps me. I have a little egg cooker and hard boil some eggs to keep in the fridge. I honestly don’t love them, but I add a side of fruit and a breakfast bread, plus collagen tea and it makes me feel good!
3. An after-lunch coffee or tea plus a little treat (usually a couple of chocolates), really helps me with a mid-day pick-me-up.
4. I try to really enjoy prepping dinner. I love veggies so try to include plenty of them in meals which makes for a lot of chopping. I’ve been watching favorite movies while I cook and it’s a game changer!
5. I don’t eat a ton of desserts, but I also keep little hard candies in the car. If it’s an especially long drive, I’ll eat one or two and listen to some favorite music. It makes it so much more enjoyable! I also have 3 playlists in my phone that I’m always adding to: favorite Christian music, favorite pop music and favorite country music. I think I’m going to add a 4th soon-favorite relaxing music! Maybe it’s because of the movie La La Land or turning 40, but I’ve been really enjoying jazz in recent years! So weird for me.

Oh I love these so much!! Thank you so much for sharing, Dana!

Also, I actually combine By the Fireplace and Burberry Brit for my fall/winter scent! Love love love both of them!

Hi Shay, This post really made me stop and think. Aren’t we silly humans for “saving” so many things for a more important time? I buy expensive candles but wait to burn them until the time is right. I have beautiful China that I’ve used twice in 29 years of marriage. A closet full of cute clothes for when I’m going somewhere. I even have a cute bathroom rug that I only put out when company comes over! The list goes on and on and it needs to stop. You’ve inspired me through the years in many areas, but this one really hit me. What am I waiting for? I need to elevate and enjoy every day. Not just the special days that we all elevate naturally. So thank you. xoxo

I have a feeling a post about podcasts is in our future! I HIGHLY suggest Dear Hollywood. In my opinion, it’s the very best podcast out there right now.

I used to only use my nice handbags for special occasions, or only burn my fancy candles when I was entertaining, or only use my pricey bubble bath occasionally. Then I was diagnosed with breast cancer (on my 46th birthday) in 2019, and man did I learn some great lessons! I do not put off anything that I can enjoy/wear/experience by saying “Oh I can do it tomorrow.” Because there were many sleepless nights I had after surgery and during chemo & radiation I was not sure that I would even see my 47th birthday. I am not frivolous by any means now, but I cherish every single day and do the things that make my days brighter and my smile bigger. Once I made it to the other side after all of my treatments were completed, I made a vow that I would live each day to the fullest in honor of others who were not able to win their cancer battle. I know how absolutely blessed I am (but also know it can come back any day).
This is something I started doing recently and while it doesn’t elevate my day (because I do it at bedtime), I put a spray of one of my favorite perfumes on before I crawl into bed. Something about that just makes me happy! I don’t save wearing my nicer ones for only the daytime.
PS- In March I will be 5 years cancer-free!

I love this! I used to wear workout clothes a lot but I recently started dressing better, nicer jeans, shoes, jewelry, etc. not fancy but nicer and I noticed I feel more put together, people treat me more professional, etc. It really does make a difference!

Did you just tell me to make my bed?! HAAAA!!!! I swear I needed to hear this 🙂
I love elevating a lot of things, but my bed wasn’t one of them. Our bedroom is tucked away upstairs, so I usually don’t care that it’s a mess. Because of you I decided to make it this morning, and it made me so happy when I walked by later. Can’t wait for my husband to come home and see it so pretty!
I’m running out to buy your French lady’s book…Thanks for all the inspiration!
Mix and Match Mama says
YAY!!!!!!!!!!! See?! It’s so nice to walk through and see a made bed even if no one else really sees. And yes, yes, grab those Francophile books. They’re so inspirational!
