Happy Monday, friends!
All 10 Shulls are back home in McKinney, but our season wouldn’t be complete without a look bACK on our summer.
Oh I’m going to try not to cry nor preach here, but my mama heart has all the feels as we enter our family’s last few days of summer break before school starts on Thursday.
Saturday marked my 17th anniversary as a blogger. Seventeen years. I sat down on August 3, 2007 as a 25 year old young woman in the throes of infertility recovering from a miscarriage only six weeks before. I was unhappy in my job, pretty lonely and needing an outlet…so I started a blog. It’s a running joke now (clearly!)…but my mom and Andrew thought it was silly to start a blog and that no one would read it but my dad (always my biggest cheerleader). I started it though because it was a place for me to write…and I’ve always loved being a writer.
Circa 2007, words like “influencer” and “Instagram” didn’t exist. There was no LTK or collaborating with brands. I sat down that day just wanting to do something that brought me JOY. I had no idea what was in store. I had NO idea.
Seventeen years later and I’ve accidentally raised my family on the internet.
There have been surprise pregnancies, adoptions, a Bachelor, the death of a best friend, a travel agency was born, two grandparents have passed, so many trips and holidays celebrated, goodness, there have been a lot of pumpkin references, hundreds of books read and reviewed…and a community was formed. When I look back, I see so many wonderful days…and, of course, there were some dark chapters too…but geez, I sat down that day to find joy and thanks to YOU, I found it.
YOU all bring me joy.
YOU all have blessed me more than words could ever, ever adequately describe. I only get to do this job because YOU show up. That’s it. Period. End of story. YOU are the reason I’m here, and I appreciate it more and more and more today than ever before. The world is dark. The internet and social media are filled with a million other directions for you to be pulled and yet you choose to spend minutes of you day here with me. You are choosing to spend your life reading about my life, and I’m incredibly humbled by that.
Thank you.
One day, when I die, I hope all they say at my funeral is that she loved Jesus and loved her family. I started this blog not knowing if I would ever be a mom…with a heartache so deep after losing my first baby that it just BLOWS MY MIND how much God has done over these last seventeen years.
Last year, I shared a “looking bACK” post, but when I sat down to do this year’s and uploaded all of the photos, it just made me feel so very grateful for my family. I have no idea if Andrew and I are doing this “right” or not. We are trying so hard to pour into our kids and spend as many minutes as we can with them…but don’t know though if it’s right/enough? Only time will tell. We’re trying super, super hard to soak up as much as we can because we will blink and another 17 years will pass, and I want no regrets.
So, thank you, thank you, thank you.
As we begin to wrap up summer here and kick off “back to school” season, this is my (very family-filled!) post of pictures looking bACK on our summer.
From Nantucket to Nicaragua, Northern Ireland, England and bACK to our favorite island, Summer 2024, I’m grateful for all the time with these five.
No captions, just photos of our summer…
Summer 2024 is officially in the books! We have a few more days before we head back to school.
Happy Monday! I’ll see you guys tomorrow. xx
Susan Jeffries says
What a blessed summer! I have been following along since there were only little Shulls. I have always enjoyed your posts. Thanks for always keeping it positive, joy filled, and family centered. Enjoy this school year!
Emi says
Been reading your blog for ages. It’s the ONLY blog I still read! Everyday except Sunday I check for the latest post. Thanks for sharing your life for all these years!
Kelly Franks says
I’m right there with you! I used to read tons of blogs but Shay’s is the only one that stuck!
Becca says
Me too! Shay’s blog is always a safe place for joy, sadness and all the real life that happens.
Diane Moore says
Hi Shay, the end of summer always feels a little melancholy to me. I do like the change of seasons, but …
You capture the blessings of each new season and remind us to be excited about what’s ahead. That’s a real gift. Thank you for being our cheerleader, encouraging us to enjoy each day God grants us. 💕
Samantha says
I can’t even remember how long I have been reading your blog. Maybe 10 years? More? It is my favorite little corner of internet to come to & get a little dose of happiness before I start my day. Sometimes I will start a story to my husband with….you know that blog I follow and he will interrupt me “yes, mix and match, I know…. continue” 🤣 This teacher in NC is thankful for you!
Kristine Guider says
Haha I’m a teacher in MN and I say the same thing to my husband…and kids too! lol
Amy says
I say the same thing. “Ya know, Shay, the blogger I follow…?” 😂
Heather says
Ha! I don’t know how many stories I tell my husband that start with “So, you know my blogger friend in Texas…” <3
Chelsea Donovan says
Hahaha same here 🙋♀️
Debbie Hibbert says
Congratulations on 17 years of blogging! I very much enjoy reading your little corner of the Internet … you’re my favorite (but don’t tell that to any of the other bloggers I read!🙃). Thank you for sharing your family with all of us.
Tracy Sokol says
I only discovered your blog a couple of years ago but I love reading about your life and your family. 🤗
Laura says
Because of you & this blog over the 11 years I’ve been reading each morning: I work in early or different hours to spend more time with my kids. I started lifting weights. I had tips easily at my hand when I found out I had to go GF. I now thoroughly enjoy “Hallmark” books/chick lit that I never thought I would! I try to enjoy each season more- but pumpkin season will always be best 🙂 Fall is never complete here without your pumpkin sausage pasta. I am over halfway through the Bible Recap and loving it! And I had hope when I was in my darkest season of loss that it wouldn’t last forever and that I wasn’t alone in my feelings… just a few years later I have 2 precious (loud!) boys at home!
Thank YOU, Shay, for “influencing” in the BEST ways possible! I am so grateful for you and all the ways you love and encourage on this platform.
Dana P says
This is such a fun way to think about how you’ve touched our lives, Shay! I have no doubt that there are MANY things I do because you suggested or mentioned them. Thank you for being a highlight of so many of our days!! 🩷
Grace says
Shay! Happy 17th anniversary on your blog! This is no small feat but just goes to show your spirit with consistency, vulnerability and strength. Thank you so much for sharing and being such a light. Cheers!

The family pics are precious, but seriously, Mades just has the BEST smile!
Stacie says
I was introduced to you while watching your brother on the Bachelor, found your blog thereafter and have been following since. Thank you for being honest in sharing your life and bringing some light in this crazy world.
Leah says
Same!! And to this day one of the only ones I still read regularly 🙂 thank you thank you!
Jennifer C. says
I start my day with your blog – and to be honest, it’s the only one I read consistently anymore. I just love how you write, I love your content and oh. how I love the Shulls! Thank you for sharing your precious family with us! It’s such a pleasure!
Paula says
Happy 17 years! What an amazing accomplishment. I believe I have been following for 15 years. Not sure, but you were pregnant with Smith. Your little corner is such a bright highlight in my day. It especially was the days when my 4 were all small. Now mine range from 19-14. How did that happen? I have always loved your content, but it has changed a little as we’re both getting older and I still love it. It just fits the season I am in at 47 years old.
Cheers to 17 more and many more fabulous memories!
BTW, I think you & Andrew are doing a fantastic job parenting. Saying yes to relationships and making that time is never a wrong investment.
Beth Knecht says
Thank you Shay for taking that leap! I love starting my mornings with YOU after I’ve done my prayers and devotional. You make the day so happy and bright amid a world that is so dark! I can’t believe how old your kids are! I remember yearning for a family myself and watching you take your kids to the park and do so many fun things that I jotted down that I wanted to do with my future family one day! Thank you for the ideas, inspiration and prayers! I hope you did something extra fun to celebrate 17 years! 🎉
Stephanie says
Beautifully said! You are a blessing to us, thank you for sharing your family and Jesus! Congratulations on 17 years, Shay! My morning has started by reading your blog for the past 9! To many more! Xoxo
Stacey says
Shay! Thank you for this little space on the internet. I appreciate that you ‘still’ blog as instagram and other online things have crept in. It’s a lot! Your heart comes through your words-and recipes and book chats and travel thoughts (and business! We loved the UK last summer with m&m!) and Bible recap recommendations. May God bless you as you walk with Him, serving and loving many.
Stacey

What a great look back! Thank you for sharing your life with us. We have three kids (10 and under) and hope to take each kid on a solo trip with just one parent. Is there an age that you would recommend we start doing this? Would love your thoughts. Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
I love that idea!! In my opinion, there is no “wrong” age to do this. I think taking littles on a trip is just so sweet, special and they’ll be super snuggly and lovable…taking 10ish year olds is nice because they don’t have phones or “plans” they’re missing and they’re still kind of into you…but then taking teens is awesome too because you get one on one time with the busiest people in your house and they’re mini adults, so that’s awesome too. I know I didn’t answer your question, but I really think you can’t mess this up.
Melissa says
Thank YOU for sharing your life and being such a bright spot on the internet! That is exactly why so many people come back day after day.
Deb says
I found your blog when Sean was on The Bachelor. I love how positive it is and how much TRUTH about Jesus you shine! It’s been fun watching your family grow and going on traveling adventures. I don’t know you, but I feel like I do. Thank you for being a ray of sunshine!
Michelle says
Thank you so much for sharing on this blog. I found you years ago when you were preparing to bring Ashby home. I found you through another influencer sharing your ingredient pumpkin muffins and I was hooked. I was always a reader but through the years, I stopped reading until your blog. I live in Massachusetts and never visited Nantucket until this year and I loved it. I am going back in September and I appreciated your blog post on where to eat in Nantucket. I also met your parents when I was there and I was touched at how sweet and wonderful they were. I really love that there is still a very positive space on the internet in your blog and thank you.
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwww! I love that you love Nantucket now too!! I’m so happy you met my parents 🙂 .
Kara says
Thank you for sharing all these years! You bring me joy too every day, inspiring me to be my most positive, adventurous and giving self.
Donna Mason says
Happy 17th Anniversary Shay! I have been reading your blog FOREVER. I can’t even count how many years. Watching how you raise and LOVE ON ALL OF YOUR CHILDREN and your entire family melts my heart. You and Andrew are amazing parents and are giving your children such a well-rounded incredibly amazing life. You both have huge hearts!!! I absolutely love reading your blog every morning. I couldn’t be happier for you and the life you live. You live it so LARGE and the love you have for life in general— it fills my heart with happiness for you.
Laci says
I came here from The Bachelor days! I loved Sean and Catherine and started reading your blog then (I had never heard of a blog) from there I have loved starting my day here. Thank you for showing up and giving us the best ideas and ways to be “cozy” our favorite word here on the blog! Happy Back to School week for us and your family!
Pamela says
Shay…YOU bring us joy 5-6 days a week so THANK YOU!!!! I have started my day with Jesus, Shay and Andrea for 10+ years 😀 Hope you blog forever and hope your family has a blessed school year❤️
K.K. says
17 years – wow!! I’ve been reading since before Ashby and Madeley, and it’s been one of the most fun ways to start my days! Thank you for the fun posts, the honest posts, and mostly – sharing Jesus. I wonder how many people pause on those posts who don’t know him. So amazing!! So, in three years, it’ll be 20… Your blog won’t be a teenager anymore… I’m just going to say – I think there should be a party! 🙂
Faith says
Thank you for sharing your life, family, and time. You are so right, the world and internet can be a dark place and you bring so much light.
KIM B says
Thank you for the joy you share! I’ve been reading for 11ish years probably, back when I was still in my teens and now I’m 30. I have been in a very different stage of life than you, but your blog and family has still brought me so much joy and I’ve felt the good times and hard times with you. And have read many a book you recommended :).
Your blog has given this childless, liberal, millennial who has never been to Texas a lot of happiness and love!
Karen says
Hi, I came across your blog back in Sean’s Bachelor days and have been reading and enjoying ever since. Are you able, and willing to share your very first blog so that we, who have enjoyed your journey can see how it all started. Thanks!
Marlene Manell says
Congratulations on 17 years of sharing your family and life with all of us. I found you after the Bachelorette epsode when Sean showed Emily his room. (Laughed so hard and still chuckle when I think of it). I love that your blog is just about family, kindness, love. I love your family, your parents (especially your dad) and that you love Boston and Nantucket (I’m a native New Englander). Thank you for sharing and being just you with no outside agenda! Congratulations again!
Debbra Weber says
Thank you for providing a positive, uplifting, informative place to come to every day! I’m grateful I found your blog. You have sparked positive changes in my life and I’m sure in the lives of many of your other readers.
Have a great first week of school! My son is fresh out of college starting his first year as a teacher and assistance football coach so I’m feeling all the feels this week as well. Prayers for your family and everyone for a safe, positive school year.
Mix and Match Mama says
Wow! What a huge milestone for him?! Sending you so much love!!
Maddie Giamello says
Sweet Shay, I’ve been meaning to send this to you for awhile and today feels like the perfect opportunity! I want to say thank you for your blog, you have added so much to my life! I randomly found you in 2015 on instagram. I believe you showed up on my explore page and I thought your family was adorable so I started following. We were in very different life stages. I was a couple years out of college, living in Dallas, working in the insurance industry and dating my now husband. I didn’t have kids yet but I dreamed of a life like yours with little kids. I have read your blog every morning with my breakfast/coffee since then. I don’t comment much, I need to be better about that, but your blog is truly a highlight of my day! I get so much motivation, encouragement and happiness from your page! I want to share one story with you. My husband and I also dealt with infertility. We tried for 2 years for our daughter and experienced 2 miscarriages. I went a little crazy during that time, trying to do all the things. I was undergoing an IUI and things weren’t looking good that cycle. My eggs didn’t grow that big and my lining was super thin. The doctors told me I only had a 6% chance of the IUI working but we decided to move forward with it because I had already done all of the meds. The morning of the IUI, I was reading your blog per usual. At the bottom of the blog post, it always recommends other older posts. That morning, it randomly recommended one of your infertility posts. I had read it before but I read it again that morning and it had the biggest impact on me. You said something about how you can have the best doctors and all the medicine but if God doesn’t want to bring a baby into the world, he’s not going to. That hit me so hard. It completely changed my perspective and I went into the IUI calm. That cycle ended up working and now our daughter is going to turn 3 at the end of August. I truly believe that God sent me your blog post that morning to get me to realize it was out of my control and to trust him. So THANK YOU for everything!! But especially for always leading us back to His word! PS, we live in Lakewood in East Dallas. I know you’re sometimes down here at White Rock for Smith. If you ever need restaurant or coffee house recommendations, let me know! Thank you, Shay!! xoxo!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh goodness, Maddie, I’m going to cry. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. I am just so honored to be a small part of your journey and SO excited about God’s timing in the birth of your sweet girl. This entire comment gave me chills. Thank you so much for sharing this. I am so blessed by you. Enjoy your sweet baby girl day!! xx
Dana Jackson says
Congrats on 17 years!!! Love all the fun summer pics! I love checking in with you “my internet friend” each morning…getting recipe ideas, book reviews, makeup tips, fashion tips, doing MMM Bible recap with you and so much more! You brighten my day like an IRL friend!! 🫶🏻
Lisa N says
So thankful that you love what you do and share it with us. I have learned so much from recipes to toilet paper rolls to control wayward hair dryer cords lol I’m not a traveler but love reading about your adventures. But honestly your daily life posts are my favorite!
Every life stage gets better, trust me! You are raising some amazing kids and I love that you respect their privacy if they ask for it! No regrets!
Congratulations on 17 years❤️
Amy Azza says
Shay, thank you for bringing me so much joy every morning. Your blog changed my life in so many ways. I am a better, more intentional mother because of you, I leaned into Jesus because of you, and I now love traveling because of your amazing travel agency ( shout out to Clare and Erika). You bring joy and purpose every day. I have loved watching your beautiful family grow. Cheers to the next 17 years!
Beth Valenta says
My journey started seeing you on the Bachelor in a JCrew green top that I was like …I wonder if I can email her and ask where she got it? Of course you can, it is Shay! I have followed, bought, laughed and journeyed with you since. Thank you for my bringht spot each morning. Here is to fall!
Mix and Match Mama says
I loved that top 😉 . Thank you for sharing this, Beth! I’m so grateful for YOU!
Polly Pover says
Shay, what a lovely post. One thing that you don’t often discuss is the “business” aspect of what you do. Your beautiful family is obviously your pride and joy, but you are inspiring as a successful woman business owner. You took your blog and developed several successful businesses!! How incredible! Congrats on that!!
Stephanie says
I started reading your blog about 15 years ago when our daughters were 11 and 5. I was in the throes of preschool and elementary school, carpool and after school activities. Now I’m an empty nester with my oldest married and graduated with her Masters Degree and our youngest daughter serving as a United States Marine in Japan and getting her bachelors degree. I still read your blog every morning when I have breakfast after my walk. My day wouldn’t be the same without you and your family! I’ve rejoiced with you and cried with you. I was so excited when you went through both of your adoptions since that is so tender to me – both our daughters came to our family through the blessing of adoption. My husband and girls all know who “ Mix and Match Mama and Shay Shull” is!!! Thank you for all you do !!!
Mix and Match Mama says
THANK YOU, THANK YOU for being a family that serves. I am so grateful for YOU and your family! xx
Robin says
Congratulations on 17 years, Shay! Your corner on the internet is filled with so much goodness! Thank you for blessing us with your sweet self and family; but most of all, thank you for sharing Jesus. Looking forward to many more years!
Jaci says
I have been a follower for quite some time and just adore you and your precious family! It is always crazy how you feel like you know someone thru a blog yet never have met them! In fact the other day, my daughter does strength and conditioning training with a man named Coach Rod Cole. He was one of the head football coaches I believe at K State when your husband was playing there and convo came up about what a great guy Andrew was and he coached him. I’m like I know his wife……but explained not like know her personally but read her blog daily so pretty much feel like I know her! Lol! You are such a ray of sunshine in the blog world! Love your post in regard to teens most especially because those are some tough waters to navigate blindly yet they are some of the best times! Just nice to know we aren’t on an island alone in areas of the teen world!;). Love your blog, your love of the Lord, and know you are such a blessing to many!
Mix and Match Mama says
What a small world?! Andrew and Sean both loved Coach Cole! I love that your daughter knows him too! Thank YOU for the sweet comment 🙂 .

Congratulations on 17 years, Shay! I’ve been a follower since 2012 and ain’t goin’ no where until you kick me out 🤣
Have a wonderful last few days of summer, Shull Fam!

Martie in FL says
Thank YOU, Shay for sharing so many wonderful and uplifting things on your little slice of the internet. It is a pleasure and privilege for me to check in with you each day for what I know will be a friendly/positive/informative few minutes of my day. I truly do look forward to seeing your posts (for the past 11 years)!
And as to whether you and Andrew are doing things “right” or not…. take it from someone with grown children who has been through your present season of life… whatever you both decide prayerfully “to do” is right. Full stop. You do the best you can with the information you have at the time and with God’s guidance… and yes, it will all be all right!
Amy D. says
Shay, your blog has been one of my favorites since I started reading them years and years ago. I commented on your IG post saying that I was so excited to hear you speak and meet you at the Nashville Go Wild. I remember screaming my head off when they announced that you were going to be a speaker and I immediately put it in my planner. I don’t comment on every post but I read almost every single one. (I really do need to get better at commenting). It looks like you and your beautiful family had an amazing summer. I hope all of your children have wonderful school years.
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh thank you so much for sharing this! That was truly SUCH a fun event!! It makes me so happy to know you’re out there still reading all of these years later. I’m so blessed by it!
Lisa Black says
I have been reading since Ashby was just a name above a hook in your mudroom. Just good, family-friendly, God-loving content. And are you the third shortest Shull now?! 😂😍 Congrats on #17!!! 🫶🏼
LuAnn Jankowski says

I’ve been following you for what seems like forever but probably since you adopted Ashby. Thank YOU for sharing a little piece of yourself with us every day. I love hearing about your family, travels, and what you’re eating, wearing, watching. Cheers to 17 years and many more good ones ahead!
Josie says
I hope this doesn’t sound too creepy/ weird but you made an appearance in my dream last night. We were friends in real life and I had a big math test the next day (Why? I have no idea as I’m SO far out of school.) Anyway, you were so sweet and called to check on me and see how I was doing and then were so excited for me when I got a 96 on the test. I remember thinking (in my dream) she’s such a sweet friend for caring so much about my math test. Also, friendship goals for always remembering the “math tests” in friends lives bc that really does mean a lot!
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwww! I love that you were dreaming about me! This is sweet…it could have been a nightmare 😉 . xx

Happy 17th anniversary! I’ve lost track how long I’ve been following. I think since Smith was about four? You’re a favorite follow and I enjoy the book recaps the most since we don’t travel a whole lot outside of Michigan, it’s nice traveling the world with ya too via photos. A cute coincidence is that Smith shares a birthday with my Daddio and you got married on my birthday. ☺️
Janet says
I remember I was looking for a recipe/idea of something to make for dinner that my oldest (now 16) and husband would like, that was easy and delicious. I stumbled on all your mix and match recipes and started following you.
Thank you for being a “virtual” friend. One time I PM’d you after it rained in our house, as we were doing a roof project. Everything was ruined, and I knew you would understand;) You so kindly prayed for me and my family. I’m happy to report we are in a new home (the roofer bought and flipped our rained out disaster). Thank you for being my daily coffee companion. You are a positive and encouraging voice and I’m so grateful for all your posts!
Jeanette says
Wow! Happy Blogiversary! I know we mainly see the smiles and fun times, however it sure does appear you and Andrew are doing an amazing job raising your family. Your children are able to have experiences that most can only dream of. In my congratulations at the top, I noticed the word giver… you truly are to your family, friends, and this community you have built. Thank you for showing up including us in your life 🤗.

I wish I could remember when I started reading, Shay, it might have been around the time Sean with the Bachelor?? (Side note – always and forever our family’s favorite season!) Anyway…I have always been a reader. But there came a time when busy with three teens going every direction that I just couldn’t find the time or mental space for reading…and then I discovered blogs. I could fit reading a blog easily into my day and I was hooked. I often think about how thankful I am for what you share. That really takes bravery and I respect and admire you for that. Our kids are raised and grown now, our first marrying soon, a whole new chapter in life. But your blog and this little bit of life is such a fun constant in my life that I am so thankful I get to continue reading. Thank you, Shay, for all you share.

Love your blog! Most of the books I read are from your recommendation. And I am also a momma of 4 kiddos. Mine are older and I still don’t know if we’ve done it right but it’s been our best try! Love how you love life! Thanks so much for sharing!!
Susan says
Congratulations, Shay! I am so happy that, in August 2007, you started writing your blog. I, too, was struggling with infertility back then and was waiting for China to match us with a baby. Our baby (now 16) was born just over a month later, but we wouldn’t know of her until the following May. I didn’t know of your blog until a good friend mentioned it (thank you, Megan!) well after you adopted Ashby. I have loved following you daily since then. I’m a social person, and so from the beginning reading your blog has felt like a daily check in with a friend. Thank you so very much for sharing your life with us.🩵

You’re my favorite friend that I’ve never met in person. 😄💕💕

I found your blog years and years ago when i first found out I couldn’t have children and was considering adoption. I remember I emailed you and you were so so kind, thank you for that! Our adoption ended up falling through but I’m now snuggling my two year old from many rounds of IVF. Motherhood truly is the most important thing!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh Becky, I have chills. I am just so grateful we connected. Snuggle, snuggle, snuggle that precious baby.
