Happy Wednesday! It’s time for this month’s LET’S LOOK!
If you don’t know what this is, once a month, Erika and I do a little link up where we “look” at different aspects of our lives (and then if you blog, you share and link up too!). We have been doing this little linky party for years now, and it’s always one of my favorite posts each month because most of the topics are YOUR suggestions!
Just as a reminder, here’s what we’ve “looked at”so far this year…
In January, we looked at LOW LEVEL GOALS FOR 2025.
In February, we looked at HOW WE WORK ON OUR MARRIAGE.
In March, we looked at HOW WE RESET FOR THE WEEK ON SUNDAYS.
In April, we looked at MAINTAINING FRIENDSHIPS.
This month, Erika and I are sharing a look at OUR WELLNESS ROUTINES!
Our LET’S LOOK this month married perfectly with our WELLNESS WEDNESDAY and MY ROUTINES 🙂 .
I just love that.
As you clearly know by now, “wellness” is something I’ve become passionate about, and I love sharing/living it here with YOU.
Today’s topic is “MY WELLNESS ROUTINE”, so I’m going to share some things I “routinely” do that make me feel better/keep my spirits lifted/encourage health gains/build strength/bring peace of mind.
I’ll share and then I hope you share too! These are just 8 of the little ways I create a “wellness routine”.
Here we go…
I PUT MY PHONE DOWN
I mean, five little words that really do move the needle so much on my own personal wellness.
You guys know me, my phone basically does nothing. I have it on DND 24/7, I never ever have the ringer on, I have so many apps removed, so many that go on lockdown throughout the day…it’s basically a phone from 1998, and yet, IT STILL STRESSES ME OUT SOME DAYS.
(Side note, but if your phone isn’t on ‘lockdown’ like mine, I highly recommend it! Feel free to ask me what/how I do it in the comment section!)
Big things don’t typically fluster me. I’m pretty much the person you want in an actual emergency. I’m calm, I’m really cool, I think quickly, I’m decisive…I do really well in this area. A class party on Friday with a Sign Up Genius and 12 moms on a group chat texting back and forth about what streamers to buy…and my blood pressure rises. Notifications about what time to be at practice in the morning. An alarm going off to call someone. A text notification about an upcoming vet appointment. Seeing 35 unread emails in my inbox. Crazy neighbors going at each other on Facebook. The Red Sox are losing and here’s the score. You guys, I get overstimulated QUICKLY when my phone is lighting up like a Christmas tree.
Years ago, I heard someone say whenever they were having a bad day, they walked away from their phone and then over time, they realized how many of the “bad” things were coming from the device. Looking up and seeing their “real life” was pretty nice. The drama, the ‘to dos’, the reminders, the information overload from the phone/email/texts/apps/internet was the stressful part.
So yes, I highly recommend putting down the phone especially if you’re feeling like you need some extra wellness in your day.
I AM ACTIVE EVERY DAY
Every day.
I wrote a post called 12 KEYS TO ADDING ACTIVITY INTO THE EVERYDAY because I’m a big, big fan.
For me, this doesn’t mean just “exercising”, it means going outside and jumping on the trampoline with my kids, walking them to school, walking my dogs, shooting baskets on the driveway, swimming with the family…just moving my body is imperative for my own personal wellness. It’s a must for me every day.
I READ
I know not everyone is a reader, but it is truly my favorite of all hobbies. I love it for so many reasons, but I think my favorite is that when I read…I CANNOT THINK ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE. When I listen to a podcast though, I can simultaneously drive to the grocery store/workout/empty the dishwasher, etc. When I read, that’s literally all I can do in that moment, and it really calms my brain and instantly makes me feel relaxed. I love reading.
I CUT OUT “THE NOISE” AND PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT I CONSUME
This probably goes along with #1, but I have become a champ at “cutting out the noise” as a part of my wellness routine. Go ahead and tell me I’m sticking my head in the sand. I’m at a place in my life where I’m okay with that. I stopped watching the news years ago, and I only get my pertinent information off the sports radio station here in town. If it’s important, they’ll talk about it in a very non-partisan “bro, we talk sports but here’s something big that just happened” easy way. I love it.
Over the years, I have really reduced the number of “hard” books I read and graphic shows I watch. Occasionally, I’ll watch something “meaty” (hello, Landman!), but for the most part, I’m looking for Hallmark-y vibes in my podcasts, my books, my TV shows, and my movies. Cheesy, corny, upbeat and happy? Yes, sign me up.
I SPEND TIME OUTDOORS
I love to be outside. We try to eat as many meals as we can outside (I just had lunch on our patio table!), I read books outside, some days, I’ll just walk around in the grass barefoot while the dogs are out there and listen to the birds. If I can be outside, I want to be outside. This is Wellness 101 for me.
I ENJOY MY OWN COMPANY
The older I get, the more introverted I become…with zero regrets.
Hi, my name is Shay, and I’ve kind of decided I’m my favorite person to hang out with. Ha! I love my friends and family and do get “my cup filled” when I’m around the “right” people in my life (because some people are flat out draining), but whenever I’m having a bad day, it’s usually a minute alone that rights the ship.
If I’m overwhelmed/stressed/upset, a 5 minute drive to my local grocery store, cup of Starbucks and stroll around their home decor section calms me right down. I’m not buying anything (other than coffee), I’m just taking that minute alone to get my thoughts together and change my scenery and bam, I instantly feel better.
The other day, certain unnamed people who live with me were driving me bonkers, and I just put on my shoes and walked around the block alone and enjoyed the 10 minutes of peace. The older I get, the more I really do need that time alone.
I GET QUALITY SLEEP
You ladies have been telling me for YEARS that I needed more sleep and well, you were right. Not just “more” but “better”. Now, I can’t imagine going back.
I FOCUS ON GRATITUDE AND ENJOY THE LITTLE THINGS
I’ve shared this before, but for 13 years, I wrote down five things every day that I was grateful for, and the impact of that one activity was lifechanging. I think it’s probably the #1 reason I find so much joy in the most mundane and routine things. I have stopped the practice of writing it down, but I still think about it every day. It’s a part of who I am. I am very grateful for so many BIG and tiny things. Just looking at every day and forcing yourself to find gratitude can’t help but add to your wellness routine, right?
Okay, next time on Let’s Look, we are going to look at…
…OUR TRAVEL BUCKET LISTS!
I would LOVE to read the comment section today and learn how you work on your wellness routine!! Please, please comment and share.
Also, if you linked up today with us, please make sure you add your link below.
Have the best Wednesday, friends! xx

So many great pieces of advice! I love how you included time alone and time outside!
So important!

Carrie Martens says
I love the “move your body” idea! Working out stresses me out. I do a lot of walking and light lifting, but when I think in terms of movement, I can wrap my head around that! Thanks for the inspiration 😊
Kara says
Love all these! Can you share how you lockdown your phone but still see important notifications/updates?
Mix and Match Mama says
I only check notifications on apps a few times a day. Maybe three times? I keep the notifications cleared out so that makes it easy to look at my phone when it’s a good time for me to see if I have anything new to see. Truly though, texts and emails are the most important apps on my phone.
Amanda says
What if there is an emergency or child at school sick? I am totally loving this idea so I am just curious!
Mix and Match Mama says
You can add your kids’ schools’ numbers into the phone as a person whom you will “allow notifications” from 🙂 .
Kari Miller says
I LOVE this Let’s Look theme this month!! I can’t wait to read everyone’s!! Shay, you are the queen of healthy routines- I loved reading your list. I need more sleep, so I’m glad you’ve been sharing more on that.
I linked my Let’s Look, but today on my blog I’m sharing my weekly work out split. It is on theme today if you want to check it out.

Laura says
Thanks to you, I recently started putting my phone on do not disturb for the 2.5 hours that my daughter is home from school and before bed. Best decision I possibly could have made!
Jess says
I never thought to do it at this time. What a great idea!
Megan Saville says
Oh please talk phone lockdown! Just sitting my phone down is not enough. I seem to lack the self control for that 🤪.
Lauren says
Same!! It’s tricky because I will pick it up to do something “important” (ex: check my calendar while something specific is on my brain) and then I get sidetracked. It’s so hard!! I keep telling my husband I want a house phone too so I can keep my phone upstairs while I am downstairs with the fam, but still have the peace of mind knowing someone will be able to reach me if they really needed to. He isn’t on board yet though. I’ll take all the tips Shay can give because she is so right, my phone is my #1 source of anxiety!
Jess says
Do you have any US destinations on your bucket list? Im sure you’ve hit up a lot of the major US destinations but would love to see places here you’d like to go! Just a thought!
Mix and Match Mama says
I do feel super grateful that I have been to most of the US states already, but yes, there are some domestic spots including Leavenworth, Washington which keeps popping up by you guys as the BEST town to visit most of the year.
Jami Romano says
2 things… I would love a little mini tutorial on how to put my phone down more. I definitely remember reading about how you blocked some apps, but I totally forget the method lol. Secondly, I say a version of this to my kids all the time: “I love my friends and family and do get “my cup filled” when I’m around the “right” people in my life (because some people are flat out draining)”!!!! I use the exact same analogy… If it doesn’t fill your cup then what is the point! Great advice today. XO.
Nicole says
I love, love, love how your wellness routine is about all the areas of your life and not just nutrition/workouts. You teach me how to live life so well by example! Thank you! 🥰
But I’ll always still be your random question asking girl wondering about what supplements you take, what your current workout routine is and your eats in a day/IF schedule. 😜😇 I’d love to hear this soon!
Mix and Match Mama says
You are always a bright spot! I promise that post is coming soon too!
Lois V says
Hi Shay! I LOVE your wellness posts. Sleep has been a problem for me too, for various reasons. I feel managing stress has helped, but how to measure when I achieve “good” sleep? I hear so much about the Oura ring and want to buy one. As you use one, can you share your data as to how it measures your successful night’s sleep?
Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
I am about to do Oura Ring Part 3, but spoiler alert, I have really grown fond of it. It has absolutely changed the quality and quantity of my sleep. You can see my most recent post on the Oura Ring though here: https://mixandmatchmama.com/2025/02/oura-ring-review-part-two/
MIRANDA BODENHAMER says
I got the sizing kit for mother’s day and my ring comes today! I know my sleep habits are absolute trash, so I’m always combing ideas to make that area better. Thank YOU for inspiring your readers to be better moms, friends, humans and focus on taking care of ourselves so we can take care of others.
~B~ says
The Oura Ring has been instrumental in helping/showing my in-their-twenties daughters where they needed to work on – I’m talking to you, sleep. I have got to look into one myself! I can say, wholeheartedly and without a doubt, that when I started to notice some major, not good health concerns, sleep was deeply related. It’s truly the base of our wellness. Thanks as always for sharing, Shay!
Erin says
Would love for you to share ways to lock the phone down! Thank you for always inspiring me to keep moving.
Mare says
I love this post so much! We have to act like the person we want to become. It is so inspiring to see you doing this every day. Thank you for always being a bright spot in what can be a very dark world sometimes.
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank YOU for being here with me. xx
Kathy says
Going to try your #1, as I have to really step away from the phone. Love this post!
Mary Beth K. says
Love all of these!! #1 is what I am really working on….that dang phone stresses me out😆 I keep saying I want to go back to a flip phone with no email and T9 text . Please do a blog post on how you lockdown your phone…would love to learn more!
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m going to do that! I just added some details in the comment section too, so make sure you look them over for some quick ideas!
Sara says
Agree! I know I would text less if I was still using that T9 method! LOL!
SS says
Shay,
I agree with some of your items too. Walks, being outside, reading books(which have been the same books our kiddo reads). Yes, it has been fun to read the same series.. sometimes I get a card made by kiddo that tells me what to watch out for in books. We go for walks with dogs and chat about books.
I love to take pix. I always joke I want to be a photographer when I grow up. Not just of my family or dogs, but anything that interests me.
Throwing an a good song you can dance and sing along to is my go to!
Alison says
I love what you said about putting your phone down on a bad day and realizing a lot of the bad comes from it. I tend to gravitate toward my phone more when I feel stressed and I have no doubt it makes things worse. Implementing this tip immediately!
Mix and Match Mama says
It was a mic drop moment for me when I heard that tidbit.
Katie Stewart says
I do not have social media. The only “social” app I indulge in is Pinterest. I fear that social media would change the way I feel about myself or those closest to me (for the worse) and I personally just feel that it’s not for me! Obviously so many people rely on socials for business, advertising, entertainment, etc. It’s just not for me! And personally, I don’t think I’ve missed out on much!
Ashlea Patterson says
Can you give some podcast recommendations for when you are in the with Ashby? I have twin 12 year old and can’t seem to find one! Love this post! I’ve been reading tons of books you recommend and changes my workout routine based on outlive!
Mix and Match Mama says
Well Ashby loves true crime. We search around and find random ones, but we also listen to *select* (not all of them) Crime Junkies too. Ashby is my true crime loving kiddo.
SS says
Ashlea,
For your twins… not a podcast, but have they read any of James Ponti’s book series? City Spies (6 books), Framed (3 books) and our kiddo just read Dead City (3 books). I have read all City spies and on 3rd of Framed… all have that spy aspect, but kids are the spies. Very good reads. Kiddo loves City Spies… but says Dead City is really good too. I haven’t read those yet. Kiddo has only read one Framed book… but I think the 2nd is better than the first. Just passing it along. Our kiddo is into all of this as well!!!! I always say another police show… we watch the 911, the Rookie, Elsbeth, Tracker… anything that is related to solving crimes.
BeckyM says
I really like #4, Shay! I’ve stopped feeling guilty about preferring lighter or happier books and have found ones that include heavier issues without feeling darkly sad or overwhelming. I also find that reading the news instead of watching or listening to it is helpful!
I’m enjoying the Walk Every Day in May! There were 2 days I would have skipped but went because of the challenge!
Emily says
Please share details about the DND and the “lockdown” of your phone. You inspire me!
Mix and Match Mama says
Just do it 🙂 . Play around with the settings on your phone, you’ll see that if you go to settings-focus–do not disturb, you can turn it on and add people who get to bypass your DND, make changes to your apps, how notifications are received, set a schedule, etc. You can also go to settings-focus-reduce interruptions as well and that’s super helpful! Go settings-screen time-app limits to set those. There are SO many ways to make your phone more user-friendly for you!
Suzanne Bjortomt says
Thank you so much for this information! Sharing this with my sweet husband who never puts his phone on silent (mine is always on silent) and gets so many notifications and crazy Marine buddies who like to text all hours of the night 🙂 This will help both of us get more sleep! He was always worried to put it on DND because of maybe missing an important text from his family!
Sheaffer says
So many great tips. Makes me want to put my phone down and get outside right now!
Paige E says
I love this post so much! I love how your list is not necessarily huge life changes, but smaller things that are life changing! I’m at a season of life in my house of teenage boys that makes me feel a little ignored and not included. They have a wonderful relationship with my husband and I am SO THANKFUL! But I’m out of a lot of the conversation. That tempts me to put in the earbuds and be on my phone. I’m going to stop that right now. Even if I don’t understand and can’t contribute – we have limited time where we we all be in the same room hanging out and I want to stop missing it! This was just the reminder I needed. Thank you thank you thank you
Mix and Match Mama says
Sending YOU so much love, mama. The teen years are hard. xx
Kelli says
Same same. Thanks for saying this! Joining you in engaging in a house full of guys! ❤️
Lisa N says
Feed them and flatter them and you’ll be their best friend lol and be thankful for their relationship with dad but Mom rules the world😉
Paula Hobbs says
Such great advice! I can’t wait to focus more on #1. Thank you and have an amazing day!!
Kelly Sites says
I am obsessed with wellness and enjoy learning about it so much. I’ve always been on my wellness game (I stink at many other areas of my life, but this one-I’ve got). I take my supplements daily (by organizing them each Sunday into a weekly container for each day of the week), I LOVE being outside and walking on the trail, even in the winter. I do skincare every single day (I really love it, it’s so relaxing and I can see results which then motivates me to keep going). I get a monthly pedi. I love getting facials and have a great relationship with my facial gal. I look forward to seeing her. I love water and drink it all day long. I love doing yoga (for the stretching and mobility, especially my hips). There are great yoga classes on You Tube and I love them. I love a 10 min mobility or morning yoga. I lift weights during the week, and move every single day. The one big area I have had to work hard on is sleep. I stink at sleep. I’ve read a gazillion books on it, and am working hard on it (I wake up in the night and have trouble going back to sleep). I think a key to wellness is one step at a time- not trying to do ALL THE THINGS all at once. Just pick an area that you really need to work on and attack it, give it time, go all in. Then do the next one, and the next one. Over time you have changed your whole life. This approach works for me. I also added the Calm App this year and I’m obsessed. I have a very stressful job (disaster response nurse) and my mind is monkey brain all the time. The Calm App helps me chill for 20 min a day and it’s wonderful and teaches me mindfulness and to calm my brain and slow down. I have REALLY noticed a change because of this. Finally, my walk with Christ is the most important to my wellness life and life in general. I read through the Bible in chronological order every year (have done this for 12 years straight) and have a prayer journal and gratitude journal. I do a Bible study with a long-distance friend each week, to keep in touch with her. It may sound like I spend hours a day on wellness- but I use my time wisely and I can’t live my best life, or my life for Christ without first filling my cup up and taking care of me so I can take care of others.
Mix and Match Mama says
Well GOODNESS, I love, love everything about this, Kelly. Thank YOU so much for sharing. Truly, thank you. xx
Mel says
Love these ideas! Try the calm gummies / magnesium for better sleep 🙂
Kristin says
I work out 5-6 days/week, walk every day unless the weather is trying to kill us, and do yoga. Consistently exercising has done amazing things for my wellness. I am in my 50s, and it seems like it gets easier every year to let things roll off without getting worked up. I used to let things upset me so much more than I do now. There are so many huge things I am concerned about right now in our country and the world, that it really puts my smaller stuff in perspective.
Gretchen says
You should probably do a whole post on locking up your phone. (pretty please!) If you have your phone on do not disturb how do your kids/Andrew/parents get in touch if there is an emergency? So many questions!
Go Cats!
G
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m going to add that to my “to blog” list, but in a very quick nutshell, you can add people to your “list” that can get through. So, I can add and remove people quickly and easily. My parents, kids, hubby, besties, employees, and so many clients would be on that list. Maybe one day, I’m waiting for a specific doctor’s office to call, I’ll add them, etc. Just minimizing that noise helps me move throughout my day more focused and less distracted.
Traci m says
Love this!!! And yes please a blog post on how to detach from your phone!!
Grace says
Shay! This was such a great post. I felt like I needed all the points but it also made me realize that I am not the only one who feels this way. I also have started to realize how much more introverted I have become as I have gotten older. I thought maybe it was the pandemic that had caused it but truly making time for who I want to be with and when I want to be alone has been such a game changer in the last few years. I too also make sure to stay away from the media and try and find non-partisan outlets to share the important information. It is interesting you mentioned the gratitude journal because I too remember watching that Oprah episode too about gratitude. In the last few years, I started journal and would always try and start out the day journaling with what I am grateful for. Yes, it is harder on some days than others for sure. Cheers to Wednesday.
Laci says
Ok, I love the dnd and it’s set on my phone to start at 10pm…but would love to hear and see more about what you have done to silence your phone even more!
Ashley D says
So many great thoughts and ideas, Shay!
I love listening to podcasts that center around this topic (and I know you do too). One that I listened to recently was, Culture Apothecary w/ Alex Clark: The Lie of 9 to 5 – Fixing Your Circadian Rhythm (released May 5th)! This episode so was fascinating, and I think I will listen again. He talks about everything from your sleep patterns having to do with the seasons and the time of day to eat. to the light bulbs you use in your home, red light and more!
I also enjoying grounding (taking my shoes off and walking barefoot in the grass), using essential oils throughout our house, and putting Castor Oil in my belly button – I know it sounds weird, but there are SOOO many great benefits to Castor Oil! 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
And I’m looking that up right now…
Amy Owens says
Oh my goodness, yes! That was the best episode! I love her podcast but that one was especially good!
K.K. says
Shay, the phone tips are so good! I’m also a “ringer off” all day type, and no notifications from any app, except text. It’s a gamechanger!! I also really like the movement commitment. It’s so easy for me to sit at my desk a lot during some seasons of work, and then when I leave, I feel tired – but I’m just mentally tired. I always have to remind myself that I’m not actually physically worn out – and move! And that perks me right up for the next part of my day!
Becky Powell says
Love these! The locking your phone dawn sounds like something I need to try. I need to step away from my phone more often, because you are right the over stimulation of the phone going off is so real!
Suzanne says
I love and agree with all of these! I would love to know more about locking your phone down during the day. I have tried to make a point of every time I catch myself scrolling on my phone I chastise myself….then pick up my Kindle 🙂
Emilee says
Great blog post! I love my time to myself, or just with my husband and boys. I find myself so cranky if we’ve gone too long without down time just the 4 of us! I’m looking forward to summer break to soak up all the family time 🙂

Thank you for sharing!

I think walking and getting outdoors really helps. I also feel so much better if I start my day reading the Bible.
Betsy says
I love this post. What if your kids or husband need to get in touch with you?
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s super easy to add people who are allowed to bypass the DND feature!
Betsy says
Thank you!!!
Beverly says
Agree 100% with all the changes you have made. I also have done the same changes and it’s huge the difference it makes if you stick to it.
Becky says
I would love to know more about how you lockdown your phone! And what apps you use and what you’ve gotten rid of. Love all your tips for adding positive wellness to your life! Thank you for sharing.
Allison says
#4, #6, #7. For sure! I am older than most of your followers, as my kids are out of college and in another stage of life, but I really enjoy your blog and love these Wellness Wednesdays. You are so thoughtful with your content and reaching out to all of us no matter our age. Thank you!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank YOU for being here!!
Allison says
YES to all of these! Read, move, get outside, listen to nature, watch what you eat, sleep, NO ‘NEWS’ 100%, pray, read the Bible, spend time alone, spend time with family, indulge every now and then, find good music, find good books, AMEN!
kelly says
I LOVE all of these can can relate all too much to the 12 text messages about which color streamers to get for a class party becoming overwhelming hahaha! But honestly this post and the one you recently did about making the best of shuttling the kids around get me excited to continue to find peace and happieness in the mundane things.
Debbie Alsip says
I could not relate more to I’m the person you want in an emergency but the little things make me crazy. Numerous notifications and group chats that fight for my time must go NOW. I’m going to change my phone settings to hopefully change my stress level. Thanks for the info.
Kathy says
I am by nature an extrovert, but I 100% agree that the older I get the more I enjoy and NEED time by myself each day! Reading is one way to get that time by myself, and it brings me so much joy!
Heather says
Putting a phone down sounds heavenly and something I need to do more. I run a business and average 150 emails a day and feel like I can’t ever get my head above water. I need to implement putting my phone down as much as possible as I know it would relieve the stress. Thanks for sharing!
Nikki says
Shay! I just love your blog so much! You have the best gift at sharing your life without making me feel guilty but rather inspired. Okay, now to put my phone up and go outside 😉
Mix and Match Mama says
Enjoy 😉 !
Heather G says
Hi Shay! I absolutely love this list and feel so encouraged to find the little things each day to improve my life. Question- do you still have/use an Apple Watch that is connected to your phone and if you have your phone on DND- does it transfer to your watch? I don’t have one but my family was considering getting some but I’m nervous about it being another distraction. Thank you!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes, the Apple Watch always mimics what the phone is doing, so if you put the phone in DND, it puts the watch in it (and vice versa). Same with silence/ringer, etc.
Heather G says
Good to know! Thanks for responding 🙂
Paige says
Wellness is something I too am very passionate about. I love reading how it all looks different on each individual and gathering new ideas to incorporate into my routine. Thanks for creating a such an inviting and inspiring “space” we can do that, Shay!
Moni says
Ok this is with NO judgement (because I am VERY guilty of this) but I thought it was funny/ironic that for “better sleep” your picture was in bed with the TV (which is supposed to be a big no no) LOL! I have terrible “sleep hygiene” – I love to watch Tv in bed, I love to eat in bed, obviously love to read in bed, love to fall asleep to a podcast, etc.
Mix and Match Mama says
I love to unwind in bed with a funny show. I just don’t get the same affect from the couch before bed 😉 .
MelanieL says
I like to combine 4 of these and take a long walk, outside, alone, without my phone!! An hour of moving my body, noticing my thoughts and enjoying the scenery does wonders for me.
Your health and wellness posts have become some of my favorite blogs ever. I’ll always remember one of your posts in Feb 2024 mentioning how we only get one life to live…it was one day before I turned 44 and it resonated with me more than anything else ever has. Thank you so much!
Mix and Match Mama says
Wow! I am so blessed by this comment (and you!!). Thank you for being here for the journey, Melanie. xx
Maddy says
I will never forget you saying years ago “earn your shower” by the end of the day. I love that motto so much and use it daily!
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwwww! I still tell myself and my kids that just about every day 🙂 .
Valerie says
I love all of these Shay! Spending lots of time outside, being active, reading, not being glued to my phone, paying attention to what I fill my mind with, time alone, noticing all that I am grateful for along with all that I am doing that is right/healthy/positive, and sleep are all on my list too. I talk to very few people who get why I don’t watch the news, only read books and watch movies that are feel good or what my husband calls “bubblegum for the brain”. I am told by many that my head is in the sand. I’m ok with that. I love being outside and being active…walking/hiking is my all time favorite hobby/pass time/way I reset/personal therapy/etc. AND I so enjoy time by myself and have found that as I get older I am enjoying it more and more. Sleep is the one I am finding I need to focus most on. I get 6-7.5 hours a night but I’m finding I need more which is hard for me. Another one that comes to mind for me is having fun and laughing. As much as I love to be by myself, being playful is so important for me whether it’s alone, with my husband, or a friend. This one really is apart of many of the others too, especially being outside and active. We had a trampoline until last year and it was great fun and hard not to smile when on it. Thanks for this post Shay! Wellness is so important and I’ve always believed in a more holistic approach. I’ve really appreciated all your wellness posts. Have a great Tuesday! 🙂

I love this list! I started turning my ringer off during the day because it is so distracting. I’ve also started taking 15 minute breaks through out the day to sit on the patio and watch the birds at my feeder. It’s so calming.
Mix and Match Mama says
I bet bird time is truly one of the highlights of your day 🙂 .

I need a post on how you get that BETTER sleep. ALL the tips are needed!!!!

My iPhone is my online device. I do not have an Apple Watch. I’ve debated for years if it’s necessary. Do you have the same settings for your Apple Watch and maybe the settings are shared with devices?
Mix and Match Mama says
The watch mirrors the phone, so whatever settings you have on your phone, it will automatically happen with your watch. I adore my watch 🙂 .
Alyssa Norman says
I also find it easier to put my phone away/ down having an Apple Watch. I’m in a phase of life where kid calls ( school nurse, appointments, etc) are the main thing I’m “worried” about missing, and having my watch allows me to see important calls/ texts without necessarily having my phone out where I may or may not aimlessly scroll the web 😉

So many great things! I have definitely adopted a number of these things in my life over the past few years. I mostly need to let go of the phone. I know it taking up entirely too much of my mental space.

I’m just here listening to The Drive with Peter Attia podcast, the episode with Dr. Rachel Rubin. Thank you for letting us know about his book and podcast! I’ve learned so much about my health from listening.

It is going to be on this week’s Friday Faves. EPIC EPISODE!

So many great suggestions! I also enjoy my alone time more and more these days and at first it concerned me then I realized I’m so content and at peace that is must be ok. I love to read, listen to 70’S music, do Wordle and crossword puzzles. If I wasn’t actually a grandma I’d say I sure am acting like one lol!! I leave my phone at home when I walk and I also love to scroll through photos on my phone, seeing my family and memories we made is my form of wellness and joy. Thank you for encouraging wellness, in all forms.

I REALLY NEED to put my phone on DND more! Such a great suggestion!

I am 100% with you Shay – get outdoors as much as possible and MOVE my body every day!!

I loved this post! Also I loved having a conversation afterwards about the topic with my 9 year old son 😊 thanks for spurring us on, Shay!

Question for you when it comes to your apple watch, are you still liking it? I know you used to do reviews on them and when I went to look (b/c I’m in the market for a new one) the last one I saw was on the Apple Watch 7. Do you still have that version? I’m torn between the 9 and 10. Thanks in advance for your help and feedback!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I love my Apple Watch! I can’t think of a purchase I’ve actually used and enjoyed more than it. I have the 9. I don’t think I did a review of this one when I bought it (about 18 months ago) because it was similar to the one before? I don’t even remember why? (Maybe I did a review of it?) IDK? I just know that I love it!

So you and I are basically twins separated at birth-lol! I love every single thing on this list. I am 100% with you on overthinking little things-it gets me so stressed when people focus too long and hard on things that do not matter that much! (i.e. the decorating text thread!). Life is too short!
I really do not like my phone at all. The other day I totally forgot it! and I was like, this is bliss. I’m in real estate though, so I do need to answer calls ha! I only get calls to my watch which helps me feel not as dependent on the phone.
I have a lot of the same wellness tips you do-reading, getting outside, being ALONE! I would add being with animals and volunteering. I try to help out at our local food pantry a couple times a month and I’m always so happy I did it! And if I’m stressed, just seeing my dogs (or backyard chickens!) makes me smile.
Love love love these posts. Keep them coming!

I LOVE that you are my twin, Kay 🙂 . It means so much to me!! xx

One of the blessings of Spring 2020 for me was realizing what the outdoors do for my soul! I enjoy fresh air and walking so much and they instantly take down my stress level. I lift/workout in the early mornings, so the walks are for “fun”…which adds to my joy. Thanks for being an inspiration and sharing your journey!

Love this post. I was just listening to a podcast the other day about how to live a healthy life in an unhealthy culture and one of the things that stuck with me the most was to find people who don’t accept mediocrity, and STRIVE regularly to be better/ the best version of themselves. I think it’s so common these days for people to fall victim to the “I’m enough, IDGAF” mentality, and sometimes it’s OK and good and healthy to just want/ strive to be better! It’s not about perfection, it’s about honoring the beautiful life the Lord has given you by being your best! YOU are that inspiration, not just to me but clearly to many others so thank you! I’m sure your life isn’t perfect, but man it’s such an inspiration that everyday ( or maybe most days) you find ways to bring healthy, happy things into your life! Ok, now I’m gunna put my phone down now and get some good quality sleep 😉👍
Mix and Match Mama says
Well goodness, thank YOU, Alyssa. We all build each other up here. I truly do not know what kind of person I’d be today without the influence of YOU girls in my life. It’s really remarkable what well meaning, good intentioned, supportive women can do for each other.
Brianne says
I’d love to know how you shut down your phone. I’m constantly anxious about what’s going to be on the screen when I pick it up… appointment, email, phone call, etc.
Sarah says
Thank you for this post! So many good things to think about. I really liked the gratitude part and stepping away from the phone. What tips do you have to lock down your phone? What happens if the school calls?
Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t feel like I get those calls very often at all, but the schools’ numbers are in my “can bypass” list, so the phone will ring. 🙂

Hi Shay! Love this post. Last May, in an effort to focus on my children without distractions, I deleted my social media and I haven’t looked back. One year without it and I haven’t really missed it. It has been the best thing. Also, I love what you said about being outside. I LOVE TO BE OUTSIDE. I do go to the gym and another thing that I do is get in the sauna!!! I love that thing. Last thing-you should watch Ransom Canyon on Netflix. It is a little meatier than Hallmark, but not nearly as involved as Yellowstone. I think you would like it! Happy summer!
Mix and Match Mama says
I haven’t even heard of Ransom Canyon?! Based on your comment, I feel like we’re kindred spirts, so I should certainly try the show too 🙂 .
Tiffany says
I love this list! Your gratitude/enjoy little things was in sync w an article on happiness I read in the New York Times last weekend. It shared that happy people focus on gratitude (based on years of research).

Great reminder to put the phone down much more often than I do. And yes, as I’ve grown older, time with myself has truly become a must! Walking everyday, sometimes for fitness, sometimes to remove myself from a situation where ‘un named people in my house’ are driving me bonkers lol, has become such a part of me!
Diana says
I love your wellness posts! Such good reminders and things to think about! I definitely want to cut down on my phone, and I also try to be active and go outside daily! And I’m with you on reading and watching more happy, cozy, “hallmark” type content!
Debra Lowe says
Walking is always a help to me – to calm myself, to get myself away from a problem I can’t solve (the answer always comes to me when I get outside and walk around the block j a few time), or when I just need a few minutes alone. Love so many things you included. I would add one – a short chat with my sister or best friend is an amazing mental health boost for me when I need one (and even when I don’t).
