Hey, hey, hey, it’s What’s Up Wednesday!
If you don’t know what that is…on the last Wednesday of every month, Sheaffer and I host this little linky party where we share what’s going on with us right now. It’s a little food, a little family, a little what we’re wearing, a little what we’re doing, a little what we’re watching and a little bit of everything else all in one post.

Grab your iced coffee and settle in as we see “what’s up” here on this July 29th 🙂 .

We are eating all the fresh seafood.
Sushi.
Lobster.
Scallops.
Crab.
Tuna.
We are eating ALL of it.

These two are about to be a JUNIOR and a SENIOR in high school!
Stop it right now.
I took this pic a few weeks before Kensington started kindergarten. A lot of life has happened between now and then, but goodness, it feels like yesterday.

It is HARD to find a photo of me not wearing…

…a necklace from Love Shack (Lola) here on Nantucket (and my girls too!)…

…I get asked about them all the time…

…I have been buying them for years, and I mix and match the pieces every day…

…if you have been curious about them…

…you can find THEIR ONLINE SHOP if you can’t make it to Nantucket.
If you do make it to Nantucket, they are open during the summer season and you will LOVE their cute little shop!

Somehow I blinked and…

…this cutie grew to be a big 16 year old boy who…

…took me on his own little boat to TUCKERNUCK ISLAND!
Four years ago when we first started living on Nantucket over the summer season, Smith and I went on an “adventure” at the end of the summer. We had so much fun that we do it each year now. We always pick something different (we don’t repeat), and we always explore something new/go somewhere kind of remote and spend the day together.
This year, Smith is a boat owner, and he has been telling me since the end of May that our adventure was going to be boating over to Tuckernuck Island…

He was very very confident that on a great weather day, we would have no issues getting over there. We have several friends here who are locals and work in commercial boating/fishing on Nantucket. They all were encouraging him, giving him their best tips, routes, time of day…it has been very sweet this summer to see these men (who own and operate BIG commercial boats) build up a boy with a nine foot inflatable dinghy. On Monday, even as we were getting our boat fixed up and ready to take out of the harbor, a captain pulled up and docked next to our dinghy. He was whistling and smiling and chatting with us, and when Smith told him our plans he said “it is a beautiful day to head to Tuckernuck”. I just love seeing these guys (this one a stranger) encouraging a young boy who is trying to learn how to captain a boat.
Tuckernuck Island is incredibly remote. From what I understand, almost all of the homeowners on this island have other homes on Nantucket. These are *bonus* places. There are only a handful of houses, and they all run on generators. There is no power on Tuckernuck. No actual roads. Not one shop or post office or anything. This is a deserted island with a handful of people who have (somehow?!) built a handful of homes (because really, I don’t understand the logistics of building houses over there!). It’s a little island with not much on it right off the western end of Nantucket.

That’s Tuckernuck across the ocean.
Side note: Smith told me I was on “depth duty”. I actually put myself on shark duty instead.

We see seals all the time on Nantucket, but on this day, I saw more than I’ve ever seen…all so up close and personal.

Our first stop was this beachy area on the far eastern end of Tuckernuck. It only took us about 45 minutes to get from the Madaket Marina to here…

…we made it! We touched down on Tuckernuck!

I felt like Christopher Columbus. Bahahaha!

This first spot was very beachy.
We took a little stroll and decided to…

…head north instead…

…to this part of the island. See the houses?
We anchored our boat and walked to shore…

…this part of the island had a rockier coastline.

…here we are! See us!
We walked up the hill and look at the views…

…just so pretty, right?!

We were excited to explore a bit.

There was a sandy road at the top of this little hill. One direction looked back over the ocean where we had just come from…

…and the other direction looked like this…

We decided to follow this little road…

…off we went. Barefoot, of course 😉 .

We saw several houses after about a mile walk up this road. At this house, a dog barked at us and we waved to a woman in the doorway. We saw about eight other people out and about working some property. They were cutting down trees and doing some yard work. I bet I counted about fifteen different cars parked in various spots. I have no idea how those cars got to this island…the whole thing was really fascinating to me.

Views for days.

Old Glory flying over Tuckernuck.
We spent about an hour exploring and then headed back…

…to our little boat.
On the trip back over to Nantucket…

…we saw a lot of horseshoe crabs…

…we anchored and went for a swim on a sandbar…

…and we saw the largest group of seals we’ve ever seen. They were watching us watch them.
And that was our adventure to Tuckernuck.
Next year is going to be hard to top 🙂 .

You will not be surprised to read that I am dreading going from…

…this to…

…this.
Sigh.

You know me well enough to know that as much as I don’t want summer to end, I am very excited about BACK TO SCHOOL SEASON!

It really is 🙂 .
I fully believe that even when I don’t have kids in school, I will still get excited about school starting back up. For me, it’s even better than the January 1st refresh/new year/new beginning.

It’s SHARK WEEK and we have been…

…watching it all.day.long.
We LOVE Shark Week.
We haven’t watched anything else. Ha!

Like I just said…

…Shark Week 😉 .

Well for starters, DRESSES on repeat this summer…

I love THIS NAVY & SKY BLUE DRESS! Love. Also, my earrings are HERE.

A TEE SHIRT DRESS for the win! It comes in solids too, but I loved the stripe!

A DRESS WITH SEASHELLS? Yes, please! I love that they’re embroidered on the dress.

How adorable is THIS DRESS?! So so cute, right?

How many times have I shared THIS DRESS with you? It is my very very favorite LBD, and it absolutely goes back and forth with me. It’s loose fitting yet not too baggy, it has deep pockets, it does not wrinkle, it’s so comfortable, it comes in a wide variety of colors, and it’s only $32. Love, love, LOVE.

THIS SKIRT was a summertime fave! I typically try and keep Nantucket clothes on Nantucket and McKinney clothes in McKinney, but this skirt is FOR SURE coming back to Texas with me. It is so soft and like wearing a pair of sweatpants or shorts…but it’s a skirt. It comes in SO MANY other colors too!

THIS TOP legit says SUMMER! You won’t believe how many compliments you receive when wearing it. I am wearing it with my FAVORITE TENNIS SKIRT.

THIS TENNIS SKIRT is blue and white with whales. A Nantucket “must”!
And if you’re looking for athletic wear that looks SO SUPER CUTE…

…these are THE CUTEST SHORTS! Can you believe they’re actually ATHLETIC SHORTS?! They’re lined, they have pockets, they’re comfy…love.

Soaking up the last bits of Nantucket.

As sad as we are that summer on Nantucket is coming to an end, there is SO MUCH GOODNESS ahead in August including…

…Friday Night Lights in Texas 🙂 .
Friends, on Monday, it will be the 19TH ANNIVERSARY OF MY BLOG.
Nineteen years!
Doing anything consistently for 19 years is something to be proud of and to celebrate. I’m not celebrating alone though because I could NOT DO THIS WITHOUT YOU. Period. End of story. The only reason this blog is turning 19 years old is because YOU. I don’t care who you are or what your story is or why you come to my site…but your time is valuable, life really is very short, and you will never get these minutes of your day that you spend here reading about my family back. This is valuable time you’re spending, and I know you don’t have unlimited time, so thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you for stopping by. I am humbled and honored and grateful for each and every one of you. Truly, I am.
How does someone spend their 19th anniversary of blogging? By not blogging 😉 .
I’ve done this long enough to know that there are some moments when you need to step away, and that’s my plan beginning today. I am going to take Thursday through Monday off to enjoy my last days on Nantucket with my family, and then I will be back with you on Tuesday, August 4th for our July Book Review.
Again, THANK YOU for being here with me these 19 years. You showing up here has forever changed my family’s life. Sending you all so much love and gratitude. xx Shay

Congratulations on 19 years of blogging! I remember when I first came to your blog because of the bundt cake recipes and cake bars! Still love all the recipes, from baking to the crockpot dishes. As your content has evolved over the years to other topics, it feels so nice to find a nice spot on the internet where we treat others kindly and can relate to one another. Cheers to 19 years!

Congratulations on your 19th anniversary of blogging. I’m not sure when I found you and Sheaffer, but it’s been several years now that I’ve been reading you both. You’re definitely a bright spot in my daily life. And also, I don’t have kids in school anymore, but I do still get excited for back to school and watch the kids walk to the bus stop and pray for them. It’s definitely a thing that doesn’t end. Have a blessed and beautiful day. T
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank YOU so much, Kathy. I am so so grateful for YOU! xx
Paige E says
I have a kinda dumb question. I grew up going to the beach all the time and swimming in the ocean and never once even considered a shark situation. Being a mom, a lot changes and with that comes more fear. 🙁 Do you ever worry about sharks when you are enjoying the beach, or is it one of those things you just can’t get crazy thinking about ALL THE THINGS and you be aware but push through and enjoy the time? Am I the only crazy one? God and I are battling a lot of my fear right now, so its just one on the list.
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m not much of a worrier, so it’s not something I really think about. Here on Nantucket, the beaches with life guards raise flags and close beaches if there is a fin spotting (not all beaches have life guards), so it always makes me feel better that eyes are out watching.
Pamela G says
THANK YOU so so much for blogging all these years! I have followed since Smith was a baby and I have so enjoyed watching your family grow up. I always start my day with Jesus, Shay, and Andrea 😀 I am so appreciative of all your hard work…your blog brings alot of joy to the world

Happy 19th Blogging Anniversary! 🎉
You’ve been such a special part of my daily routine for many years. Reading your blog is the very first thing I do when I start my workday, and it’s become one of my favorite parts of the day.
Over the years, I’ve made countless recipes, discovered wonderful books, found beauty and fashion favorites, learned valuable life and family lessons, and been inspired by so many creative party ideas—all thanks to your blog.
Thank you for the time, effort, and heart you put into sharing your life and passions with us. Congratulations on 19 amazing years, and here’s to many more! ❤️
Mix and Match Mama says
Gina, goodness, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I am truly so very grateful for you. xx
Marlee says
Someone introduced me to your blog about ten years ago, and at first I thought we just don’t have much in common…we are too poor to travel, we live in Canada where it’s cold 99.9 percent of the year, and we have no family who live close by (that choose to connect anyway). But I kept reading and found that we have so much more in common than I realized. Your love for God, your family, your joy, gratitude, and effort to find beauty in the little things every day can resonate with all of us, not matter our lifestyles. And I’ve been faithfully reading ever since. Thank you for sharing daily joy with all of us.
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh wow, thank YOU for sharing, Marlee. I am so grateful you are here with me each day. So so grateful for my Canadian friends! xx
Paula Hobbs says

Happy 19th anniversary Shay! Been reading am for about 11 years and it’s been fun watching your family grow, evolve, and adventure. I started reading before I had any children and now I have an almost 5 year old and a 17 month old. I find a lot of inspiration in your parenting and how you make everything magical for your kids. My mom did that for us, and I always knew I wanted to do it too, so thank you for tips and ideas!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh sweet Karleigh, you are always one of my faves. Thank YOU for being here with me.xx
JoAnne L says
Wow, 19 years. I remember when you celebrated ten years, time flies. Thank you to you, friend. I have read so many of the books that you’ve reviewed, listened to podcasts that you’ve shared, and dreamed about visiting places that you’ve traveled to. Congratulations to you, and your family for being willing to share themselves with all of us.

Stephanie says
Wow 19 years! I know I’ve been reading your blog since Sean was on The Bachelor and you only had 2 kiddos! Time sure does fly. Even though my sons are grown and I have grand daughters now, I really enjoy reading your blog every day. From your recipes (which I’ve made ALOT of them) to travel, to fitness, and to seeing the joy in every day life you’ve been a great inspiration Shay. I’ve never met you or your family, but I tell people all the time “This family I know that lives in McKinney Tx…”, blah, blah blah LOL. Enjoy your long weekend with your family soaking in the last of summer before the crazy starts!
Mix and Match Mama says
Goodness, THANK YOU, Stephanie! I am so happy you are here with me. xx
Bren says
I have to add my reply here with Stephanie’s as so much is similar. I believe I started reading right after Sean was on The Bachelor and I know I began when you had just two littles, or right about the time Miss Ashby entered your world. I feel so honored and blessed to read your life that you share with us, Shay.
I honestly cannot believe that you have two entering their junior and senior years of high school, just like I felt when I reached that milestone age in our own lives because time truly flies by. Looking forward to what Kensington feels comfortable with you sharing and hearing your perspective, with what you feel comfortable sharing, during this season of life.
Ending with, so much like Stephanie, while I’ve never met you, I find myself saying often “Oh, this amazing lady, Shay, I follow from McKinney,Texas shared….” insert whatever I’m talking about. 😊 As always, thanks for sharing, Shay, and enjoy your time off.
Mix and Match Mama says
Bren, you are such a faithful part of this online community. Thank YOU for your kind words and genuine encouragement. I am just so very grateful for you!

Love, love, love this, Christopher Columbus! 🤣 I don’t think I could do it but it did look like the perfect day to make the voyage! You’ve had a permanent spot in my favorites folder since the day Chris Harrison shouted you out so however long that’s been!! Congratulations on 19 years ❤️
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwwwww! Thank YOU, Melanie! So grateful for you!!
sandi says
I wish I could remember exactly how I found your blog but it was before the two youngest became a part of your family. There are so many things to cherish about your blog… the positivity, the love of Jesus, the love for your family and of course, the book reviews.
Back to school is looking different around here this year. My husband and his brother graduated from a small Christian school, my mother in law taught there for 28 years and all four of our kids have graduated from there. This will be the first year without someone in our family on campus since the 1970’s. There is a bit of sadness in that, but I am going to celebrate with a milkshake and look forward to no more school emails! The baby of the family is heading off to college in a few weeks and its funny to see her older siblings ask “who gave you permission to grow up”? She has helped move everyone else into college so they will all be there to move her in too. Even our newly married daughter living in another state is driving home to help move her in. These babies don’t keep!
Mix and Match Mama says
Sandi, you are truly truly such a valuable part of this community. Your comments contribute more than you could ever know. From the bottom of my heart, thank YOU for being here with us every day!
Michelle f says
Congratulations on 19 years! I have been reading your blog daily since 2013 and I can’t thank you enough for what you do. I came here for the three ingredient pumpkin spice muffins and I have stayed and enjoyed every moment. It has been a pleasure to watch you raise your children, adopt the girls and see them grow into wonderful children. I love Nantucket, and when I am not there, I love to read your posts so I do feel like I am back on the island!
Enjoy the time and how about those Red Sox! I knew they would turn this season around!
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwww, Michelle, THANK YOU! I am so so grateful for you! Go Sox!
Kristin S says
Way to know what you need and take a break. Enjoy soaking up time with your family!

Happy 19th Anniversary of blogging. I’ve been here since you announced you were adopting Ashby, so it’s been awhile. My oldest is also going into Grade 12 this year (we’ve got this, right?!?!?), and we also love to travel. I’ve read many of your book suggestions and one of my favourite sweaters is a striped one from Amazon you recommended a few years ago. And I love my Blue Jays as much as you love your Red Sox, so there’s that too 🙂 Thank you for continuing to share your family with all of us and inspiring your readers along the way.
Mix and Match Mama says
We’ve got this (I think?!)! I’m so blessed to do life online with YOU, Natasha! Cheers to anyone who routes for a team that isn’t the Yankees 😉 .

Congratulations on 19 incredible years of blogging!
I’ve been reading for a long time, and it’s hard to put into words how much you’ve inspired me. Through your blog, you’ve encouraged me in fitness, fashion, cooking, creating a welcoming home, growing in my faith with Jesus, discovering great books…and so much more. Your authenticity, kindness, and consistency have made such a difference in my life.
The truth is, your blog is the only one I still read, and I genuinely look forward to it every single day. It’s become such a special part of my daily routine, and I can’t imagine my mornings without checking to see what you’ve shared.
Thank you for faithfully showing up year after year and for using your gifts to encourage so many of us. You’ve built so much more than a blog—you’ve built a community, and I’m so grateful to be a small part of it. Congratulations on this amazing milestone, and here’s to many more years!

Carrie, your words mean more to me than you could ever know. Truly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much. I am so grateful for YOU!. xx

Wow! I began following you 7 years ago after I had my first baby. You wrote a devotion for Proverbs 31 Ministries and your blog was linked. It has been such a happy, cozy part of my day from that point on. I have learned a lot and appreciate you, and the other ladies in this group, sharing wisdom and insight. I am currently listening to Slow Productivity and it is so timely as I head back to work as an instructional coach this week. Enjoy the time spent with family!

I started reading your blog many years ago and it is my little piece of happy in the morning while I am having breakfast.
Just the other day, I remembered the picture that was taken of K, Ebby Lee and the rest the year they were going to kindergarten together and thought how sweet it would be to recreate that for their senior year.
Mix and Match Mama says
Wasn’t that just yesterday?!
Bev says
Cheers to 19 years! Thank YOU for providing such a sweet place for those of us who have followed you for years. It’s not by chance but rather loyalty because you make this more about your followers than you do about yourself. Such helpful resources you share from recipes, travel, books, movies, music, fashion, gift ideas, etc. plus your beautiful family which is always a favorite! You give of your time and it’s so appreciated. We had our favorite everyday meatballs again on Sunday and lemon coconut bars for a church potluck, both so yummy.
Enjoy some well deserved time off! 🩷

Yes, Shark Week! Been watching for years. My boys got me hooked on it and it’s one of my summer’s pleasures. Is that Smith in those pictures LOL You would say that it was hard to be allowed to show him on social media. He has grown. My boys tower over me. Love being boy mom!

Happy 19th! I hope you remember…you are my sunshine! 🙂

Years ago I read a daily devotional that you wrote. I was so inspired by it, I saw on the bottom of it a little bio of you and your blog was listed there. Nineteen years is absolutely an accomplishment! I’ve been reading since before Kensington started kindergarten, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve learned several things here, but most importantly, is prioritizing daily Bible reading … including reading through my Bible two times (soon to be 3 times!). Enjoy your off with your family.
Mix and Match Mama says
Debbie, this makes me so so happy! Thank you so much for being here with me. I am so happy you found me. xx

I have been reading your blog since I retired from teaching in 2016. I am not much of a traveler, but I do enjoy reading about your family’s adventures. It is hard to believe that this is your 4th summer on Nantucket. It seems like it was just yesterday that you were talking about finding and buying your house. Enjoy you time there before you return to the heat of Texas. It has been crazy hot and MUGGY in Missouri too.
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank YOU so much for being here, Robin! I am so grateful for it!

I LOVE adventures with my boys. I’ll entertain my oldest (23) tonight! And who ever thought Tuckernuck was an actual place? A house on a super remote island with no power? Cars with no roads? Sounds like the twighlight zone….
Mary says
Congratulations on 19 years! As they say the best is yet to come! Although the first 19 have been so fun and informative! Looking forward to your further adventures!

Wow! Love this special time you are able to share with your son. I also have one son who is 17 and being with him is oh so special. My girls are so sweet and our bond is wonderful but I know what you mean about being together just the two of you. Just like you always say, Those babies don’t keep! 🥲
Congrats on 19 years! I have been along for the ride for 10 years and truly love being here each and every day with your family.

Congrats on 19 years! I’ve been following along since 2010 – it definitely does NOT feel like it’s been 16 years. This is the only blog I’ve continued to follow all these years – thanks for showing up!
I was intrigued by Tuckernuck after reading your story so did some researching and found it interesting that it’s entirely a private island and according to what I read, you’re only supposed to visit with an invitation from one of the owners – is the word on the street with the locals there that it’s more laid back than what I read online? It seems interesting that you’d be encouraged to boat over there by local fishermen if the island is supposed to be by invite only. Either way, super cool trip for you and Smith and good for you guys for allowing him to grow his independence!
Mix and Match Mama says
They definitely don’t want the Hyline ferry dropping people off over there, but there are certain spots where we were told you could go and land your boat (or anchor) and be out of the way. Everyone was very encouraging and supportive of us heading over.

Congratulations on 19 years!
