It’s Friday!
It’s been a nice week. Next week, I have too much going on (I hate when I over-schedule…shame on ME!), but this week has been pretty chill. I’m sure by next Friday, I’ll be limping to the finish line…so, I better enjoy me weekend, right?!
Here are some of my faves from this week…PLUS, I’m announcing five lucky winners from our giveaway too! Fun, fun, fun! Thanks to Erika, Andrea and Narci for always hosting!
Okay, I’m starting off my favorites with a look back at two posts this week. First up, my January Book Review. I have some thoughts:
1. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who didn’t like A Spool of Blue Thread.
2. Everyone should read The Woman in Cabin 10. I loved it and based on your comments, you all did too!
3. If you need even more book suggestions, READ THE COMMENTS in that post. There are a ton!
Speaking of comments…
My Traveling with Kids post garnered a ton of comments too. Thank you to everyone who left their favorite tips and tricks to traveling with kiddos. If you’re gearing up for a trip with your family, read that post and the comments HERE.
Instead of a YouTube workout today, this favorite is workout related (well, sort of). I had a lot of people (and I mean A LOT!) ask me what kind of protein powder I use after I posted these two pictures on Wednesday…
I have one scoop of chocolate protein plus ice and water here and then…
…one scoop of vanilla protein plus kale, kiwi, ice and almond milk here. I think “what kind of protein powder do you use” was the number one question that day and the answer is…Syntrax Nectar. We buy it at the local vitamin store but you can get it online too. I feel like over the years, Andrew and I have tried a million varieties of protein powder and this by far is our favorite. We use it all the time plain (like I did at the gym) or stirred into smoothies and such. So, it’s been a “favorite” of mine for years 🙂 .
So, last week, I told you that Nordstrom asked me if I wanted to talk about their winter wear and I said yes…and I wanted to do a giveaway too. Well, well, well…today, we’re sweetening the deal! I’m going to share my favorite beauty items from Nordstrom (you ladies already know so many of them!) plus, I’m going to give away one of them along with the Uggs to our five lucky winners. Woohoo! Thank you Nordstrom 🙂 .
So, in November, I did this post about my favorite skincare products…
…but I somehow forgot to mention one of my very favorite things. It’s something that YOU ladies recommended to me last winter that I cannot live without it…
…this Clinque Moisture Surge Overnight Mask. My skin gets really dry in the winter and last January, I asked you ladies what your favorite moisturizing mask was and so many of you suggested this one. I bought it and felt an amazing difference after just one use. Now, I use it all the time! I love that it goes on clear (not thick and colored like other masks), so I can just apply it at night before bed on top of my other nighttime serums and lotions (see other post for all of those details) and wake up feeling so hydrated. IT IS AMAZING. So, if you are one of the winners of the Ugg slippers today, you’re getting a bottle of this stuff too. Because this winter, we really only need slippers and moisturized skin, right?! Some of my other favorite beauty products from Nordstrom right now are these…
I have a personal affection for all of these products.
#1: Nars Radiance Primer: In the spring/summer/fall, I use Clinique’s City Block Sheer SPF as my sunblock and primer but I noticed right before Christmas that my face was all blah from the winter, so I bought this Nars Radiance Primer (which is also SPF 35) to use during the winter and I love it! It gives my skin just that touch of oomph it needs during these bleak winter months when my skin is nothing short of dull.
#2: Philosophy’s Fresh Cream Body Lotion: A lady at the jewelry counter at Nordstrom was helping me try on a bracelet and she smelled amazing. I flat out told her that she smelled good and she walked me right over to the beauty section and handed me a bottle of this. It smells just like it says: of fresh cream. Just light with the tiniest hint of vanilla. Love. It.
#3: Murad Intensive-C Radiance Peel: Well, this is a new one for me. I was reading a magazine at the beginning of January and it said this stuff was one of the better at-home peels for your face. And you all know how I love a good peel! I read the reviews and they were overwhelmingly positive, so I bought a bottle and have used it three times. It goes on easy (I have never felt any burning/stinging/discomfort) and then after 10 minutes, you wipe it off. And honestly, I think it does a pretty good job of getting my skin nice and exfoliated! My face is never red when I remove it (like it is when I get a peel at the dermatologist office). It just feels nice and fresh.
#4: Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask: I mean…I think I’ve gushed enough, right? The best stuff!
#5 Lanolips in Lemonaid Lip Treatment: I can’t stand dry lips, so I’m always swiping this stuff on morning, noon and night. It smells like lemonade. It’s thick and moisturizing and delicious.
And I couldn’t share my favorite beauty finds without naming one last one…
…this is how I look tan. I use the face wipes at least once a week and the body wipes in the spring and early summer. I’ve probably blogged about them 4,879,209 times…but that’s because I love them so darn much. They give off just the nicest subtle glow without looking orange or streaking. I am devoted to these things and can’t ever see myself not using them.
Okay, you can scroll and click below to see some of my other favorites. I’m a beauty junkie. Give me all the primping please! 🙂
So, who are the winners of our giveaway from Friday? These five lucky ladies will all receive a pair of my favorite Ugg slippers plus a bottle of the Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask. Drumroll please…

Winter wear and beauty at Nordstrom…two of my favorite things!
And finally, last week, I posted this…
…my Favorite Valentine’s Treats. Well, today, I’m adding these to that list…
…my homemade Red Velvet Cupcakes with a Pink Cream Cheese Frosting.
Yes. Just say yes.
See the recipe HERE.
Happy Friday friends! I hope you all have the best weekend!

Give me all the beauty products! I love reading what others are using and trying out some of their favorites. I’m pumped for those winners. And-after all that I can’t wait to start The Woman in Cabin 10!!!!
Jenny says
I’ve been in the market for a new “night potion,” so I’ve been doing lots of research. Time and time again, I’m finding people are really enjoying the Clinique line of skincare serums and masks–and the price is so reasonable compared to the other stuff out there. I might try this night mask next!

Per your recommendation, I bought those tanning wipes like 6 months ago, but i STILL haven’t used them! I’m afraid I won’t know how to apply them and then I’ll spend a week looking streaky! I’d love it if you would do a tutorial! Also, I just finished A Hundred Summers and loved it! AND I loved It Ends With Us so much that I bought Slammed, which is the first in Colleen Hoover’s three book series. I read it in one day! Put it on your book list!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh girl, it’s so easy! I just wash my face at night and then rub the wipe all over my face into my hairline and down my neck. Then let it dry about 3 minutes before proceeding with your usual nighttime serums and lotions. You’ll wake up the next morning with just a subtle glow!
Sara Wolf says
Just had to comment because I bought these tanning wipes on Shay’s recommendation too. I was nervous to try them too (because who wants a bad, streaky face??) but they are honestly SO easy! You can’t really screw these up. Just wash your face, rub the wipe all over your face and neck, and that’s it. Easy-peasy! I usually add some moisturizer about 10-15 min later. Just wanted to re-assure you that they really are easy (if I can do these, you can definitely do these!) and encourage you to give them a try.
Sheaffer Sims says
Reading about other people’s beauty favorites is a favorite of mine for sure! I want to try the Murad peel!
Amanda @ Cupcake N Dreams says
Yes so happy for more beauty recommendations today! I have been using the Clinique Moisture Surge Mask since you talked about it last winter and it’s made a huge difference. Now I want to try the NARS Radiance Primer. Happy Friday!

When you shared about the Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Masque, I bought it immediately and have never loved a product more! I live in the Great White North, aka Canada, and my face was so dry last year that it was peeling. I’ve used this for about a year now, and I haven’t had dry spots since! So anyone considering getting this, do it- run to your nearest store and buy it asap. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Lauren says
Me too, I bought it after reading here and I’m a big fan!

Have you ever tried Beverly International’s UMP protein? Oh my, it is so good! I mean, “jump up and down I am so happy” good. My husband considers himself a “protein connoisseur” and once he tried this he swears he will never drink any other protein. The chocolate is amazing and it smells like cake batter. Unfortunately, you can not purchase in stores but it is available on Beverly Internationals website, bodybuilding websites and Amazon (though Amazon tends to be a bit pricier). Beverly International has a ton of sales where you can purchase cheaper and they also send out a quarterly fitness/body building magazine that has some great info. I shared some with my son, who is in medical school and he is now hooked as well..(this is the guy who swears he would never ever touch any protein powder because it tastes so bad). BTW, I am not affiliated with Beverly International in any way…I am just a busy nurse who doesn’t have time to sit down and eat at work…so I have become a Super Fan of UMP!

This Friday Favorites is working for me this week! I need a new skin care regime. Before I order some products I just had a quick question. Do you know if the Murad radiance peel has Retin-A in it? Thanks Shay!
Mix and Match Mama says
I just checked the bottle and it doesn’t list it.
Kelly Franks says
Question about the Clinique Mask and the Murad Mask. For the Clinique do you put on your serum and other things under it or just avoid that on the days you use it and the same for the Murad Mask.?
Mix and Match Mama says
I put the Clinique mask on top of everything at the very end and then I use the Murad mask before I do everything (and then once I’m done with it, I add everything on top).
Hannah Long says
Do you use the tanning wipes on your hands too? If not how do you get them tan?
Mix and Match Mama says
I do not because with the cracks and such in hands, I’m afraid it wouldn’t look right. I guess I just don’t worry about my hands???
Jennifer says
I teach middle school and switched to fresh cream products about a year ago. When I lean down to help my kids they always take a big sniff and tell me I smell good! 🙂 I use the perfume and body spray, too. It’s the perfect amount of smell and I get compliments every. single. week. from random people at ballgames, the mall, etc.

Shay, I love your blog! I just spent over 2 hours down the rabbit hole clicking on links and reading past posts! Love your Norway vacation! I might be calling your travel company to help me plan that same vacation! Looked amazing!

I need to order some of these!! My face has been terrible lately!!! It needs some help!!
Sarah says
I’m so glad you posted about that Clinique Moisture Surge overnight mask. My skin has been so very dry when I wake up lately and it seems no matter how much I moisturize during the day, I cannot get rid of the flakes. I’m hoping this mask will do the trick.

I love seeing what other woman use! I am a product junkie as well, so appreciate your thoughts on the products you enjoy. Headed to the beauty counter…:)
Erin says
I love all things Philosophy, but Fresh Cream is my favorite fragrance. I also love Falling in Love for the summer.
Candace Zarecor says
Love learning about new beauty products to try! You need to try Beauty Counter products http://www.beautycounter.com. They are safer products containing less toxic chemicals! I started using them last year and have slowly tried to make the switch to only use them. Amazing products!!!!
amy says
I was thinking about you guys hating your mattress. My husband and I have both had a hard time sleeping lately, but I think it is related to the cozy flannel sheets on our bed. The weather has been so up and down that it hasn’t been exactly flannel sheet weather. We had to resort back to our regular sheets I just couldn’t take it anymore.
Carolyn says
Shay, you always have the best recommendations, you make it fun to try new things, thank you! Have a wonderful weekend!

Just ready to start Beatriz Williams new book Wicked City. Loved A Hundred Summers. Hope this one is as good.

I read “The Woman in Cabin 10” this week after your review. Wow! Such a good suggestion. It definitely kept you in suspense to the point that my heart was racing and I had to remind myself to breathe. I can’t wait to check out a few other recommendations. Thank you!
Lisa says
I was laughing at how many people asked about the protein powder. Honestly, I was over here like “I wonder what kind of brownie she eats every night”. 🙂

Hi everyone!
I am currently protein powder shopping! My husband is a bit lactose intolerant, does anyone have any suggestions for awesome protein powder besides whey? Thanks!!

For years, I used sunless tanner religiously. However, I found that all of them (and I do mean ALL of the products I tried) came right off in chlorinated pools. Have you had that issue with the tanner you use? 20 minutes in a pool, and I was ghost white again. Haha. Very inconvenient and annoying.
Mix and Match Mama says
Typically, if I’m swimming, then it’s summer and I don’t really need the tanning towels (because I’m outdoors all summer long), but if it comes off in the pool or whatnot, I would just do it again the next day. They’re so easy to use that it’s simple to reapply if necessary!
Sanna says
Whittywife,
I so feel your pain!! The tanning towels come off in chlorinated pools too! 🙁 I used it last summer. All self-tanners do, including the towels, unfortunately. Chlorine pretty much acts as a bleach on your skin. Isn’t it so annoying when you go in bronzed, and come out pale white!!!?? The same happens to me in the ocean with the salt water.
Tricia says
Your entire post is showing in my email and I’M BEYOND THRILLED. thank you thank you thank you. Seriously, may take me all day long at work (don’t tell) but your email seriously is read COMPLETELY through – i don’t wanna miss a thing about the Shull Six — each and every day I get it. way too many items on your beauty recommendations are on my “to buy” list now. you haven’t let me down with any recommendations so far so keep them coming. have a wonderful weekend. hope next week doesn’t wear you down too much. thanks for whatever, if anything, that happened. again, love the blog, love your family, love your heart.
Elizabeth says
I’ll have to try that mask! I have the moisture surge intense gel moisturizer and have been using it but I think it’s ended up being too heavy for every day. The mask sounds great every now and then for extra moisture!
Crystal says
Hey Shay! I would love to read a post on what you get done routinely at the dermatologist or spa for your face. I think I’ve read somewhere that you routinely get facials and peels but I’d love to know more details. Thanks for taking the time to share a little of your world with us. Praying for your sweet Ashby!
Angela Ellingson says
I read your post this morning but life pulled me away before I could comment. 😉 I love these posts and knowing what you use. You have beautiful skin!

Have you tried Sarah Happ’s The Lip Slip? It’s amazing! So moisturizing and leaves a tiny pink gloss and lasts for hours! I haven’t tried the lemonade stuff you posted about yet, but I highly recommend Sarah Happ’s treatment.
Stephanie says
I always love your Friday favorites! 🙂 Thank you!
I am however, so sad and disapointed to hear that Nordstrom dropped Ivanka Trumps line. What has happened to women supporting other women? 🙁 Since you have a relationship with them, I hope you will pass that along to them. 🙂
Melissa says
Thank you so much for posting your protein brand and smoothie recipe! I have one quick question… Do you buy the Syntrax Natural or just the Syntrax regular? Going to purchase today. Thanks again. I love your blog and suggestions. So helpful. 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Natural!
Melissa says
Thank you for the response ???

Girl, I just started selling LipSense (because apparently owning an online clothing store, blogging and being a stay at home mom to 3 kiddos isn’t enough) and you have to try it and add it as your final touch to your makeup routine! Once I tried it and it didn’t come off (seriously) I was a believer and couldn’t NOT share it!!
Meredith Walker says
Hi Shay! When do you apply the face pads as part of your beauty routine? I have been wanting to try them forever, but I have a pretty intense facial routine. Want to make sure I add it in at the correct time.
Love your blog! Thank you!!

Right after I wash my face before I use any other product!
