Happy October, friends!
I just love this month.
Pumpkins, leaves, costumes, jeans, football, sweaters…all the happy fall stuff!
About once a year, I do a “what’s my favorite skin care products” post. I’m a big fan of skin care products. (Let’s be honest, I’m a big fan of beauty/makeup/hair/skin products in general!) I grew up with a mom and grandmother that realllllly emphasized good skin care over makeup. The better your skin, the easier it is to wear makeup (and the less you have to wear), so it’s been ingrained in me for a long, long time. Since last year, I’ve changed up a few products and kept a few the same. My skin is pretty normal but can lean dry when the weather changes. I also rely a lot on at-home masks and am always experimenting/looking for new ones that aid my basic skincare routine. I also round out every single day with SPF…because you know, that stuff is worth its weight in gold. So, here’s a little look at what I’m using right now. I would LOVE to know what you’re using too!! These are some of my favorite posts to read on other blogs. I don’t know why…but I find them so interesting and helpful! Tried and true products are always my favorite recommendations!
First up…
My morning routine is pretty simple. I usually wash my face with a little coconut oil (like the kind you use to cook with). It’s very hydrating and a little goes a long way. After that, I apply a thin layer of SK-II Treatment Repair Serum followed by Chanel’s eye cream and then I top it off with Tula’s Hydrating Day & Night Cream. (After that, I apply my SPF which also doubles as my foundation’s primer). I actually read about Tula on two of my friends’ blogs and once I tried it, I was hooked. First, I love that I use it both day and night and second, it’s thick and very hydrating. Win, win! I’ve been using the SK-II serum for over a year now, and it’s the best one I’ve ever tried. The other serums I’ve used in the past would tend to make my skin red or flake…but not this one. It’s never irritated my face. And a magazine article convinced me to try the Chanel eye cream, and I’ve never looked back. It’s moisturizing, not greasy, helps with both dark circles and bags under my eyes. I’m hooked now! I would say a little goes a long way on all three products. They all will last you a long time!
There are a few more steps to my evening routine. First, I get all of my eye makeup off with Julep’s Hydrating Cleansing Oil (you can also use coconut oil for this too). I received a sample of this and loved it so much that I bought a bottle. It smells like orange zest and removes all of my eye makeup without irritating my eyes whatsoever. After that, I wash off my makeup with Tula’s Purifying Face Cleanser. I love this because it works by itself or also on a Clarisonic. It’s light and gentle. After my face is all clean, I add a layer of Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Serum. This might be my very favorite product! It’s a cult favorite and honestly, I think it’s done wonders for my face over the years. After the serum, I apply my eye cream and then add Tula’s Hydrating Day & Night Cream before finishing with Retin-A. I get my Retin-A from my dermatologist’s office, and it’s probably the most effective thing I put on my face. It’s not hydrating (which is why I also use a night cream), but it’s powerful. I use a smaller percentage (.025), so that I can use it daily without making my face red, flake or dry. Ask your doctor about this stuff!
I’m a girl who loves a face mask. I use one about every other night or so. I have a mask for every skin occasion 🙂 .
#1: Tula’s Exfoliating Treatment Mask: I would say this is the basic “does everything” mask. I put it on, take a bath, wipe it off with warm water and my face just feels nice and clean. This is the mask I use when I just want my face deep cleaned, all of my pores cleaned out, and such. It’s the work horse of the group.
#2: Fresh Rose Face Mask: This is the mask I put on when my face feels dry and I want a little extra hydration. When I wipe this one off, my face still feels nice and moisturized and not tight at all. Bonus, this one smells insanely good!
#3: Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask: This is the one I use when I know my skin needs some help. I used this one after we got back from Mexico, because no matter how much SPF I applied or how much I stayed under the shade of my hat, my face just needed some help. This one is more intense, and I would not recommend it if you’re about to go in the sun. This mask feels more like the treatments I do at the actual dermatologist’s office.
#4: Clinque’s Moisture Surge: This stuff is a-mazing! I put this one right before bed (on top of my other PM products) and wake up with very hydrated skin! I use this mask the most because it really does deliver. Whenever you think your skin is dry or parched, apply a layer of this and then go to sleep. Your skin will feel so good when you wake up!!
Now, this product get honorable mention because I do love it too…
Bobbi Brown’s Radiance Boost is great when you need a good facial scrub. It also smells like orange zest and well, that makes me happy 🙂 .
So, what are your favorite skin care products??? Do share! I love to experiment with new ones!!
Also, don’t forget this…
I’m giving away an All-Clad Slow Cooker and all five copies of my books to two lucky winners this week! To enter to win, click HERE.
It’s October, friends! That makes me very happy.

Have you ever used Beautycounter? I started using their products a year ago and my skin has never looked better, I would highly recommend it!!!!
Bethany says
I love Beautycounter as well! The eye cream is amazing!
Lina says
Me too! I was able to stop using prescription creams because my skin improved so much!
Lauren G says
I’ve heard so many good things about the SK-II serum. I think I need to get it! Do you still get monthly microdermabrasion treatments and chemical peels?
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t! I did for years, but about 2.5 years ago, I decided to do one photo facial series a year instead and I think it works better!
Kira says
What type of photo facial series do you do? I’d love to see a post on this. I really look forward to these beauty posts that you do, I have tried so many new things that I love because of them. Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
I need to ask! She just calls it a photo facial. I’m sure it has some fancy name. I’ll ask!
Angela Ellingson says
I’m super curious as well! Thanks for checking!
Kelly Franks says
Do you get this done at the dermatologist?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes!!
Julie says
Do you have a favorite hand cream and chapstick. I’m already so dry ?
Mix and Match Mama says
My hand cream varies. Right now, I’m using Laura Mercier. I’m loving Kiehl’s Butterstick for my lips!
Darcy says
Malin + Goetz Mojito Lip Balm is the BEST!!!! My lips flake/chap every year, but last year I started using this and have not had any problems. One tube has lasted me 6 months, I only need to apply it in the mornings and it lasts a long time! (And this is coming from someone who has tried A LOT of chapsticks.) 🙂
Sheaffer Sims says
I’ve been hearing about Tula products all over the place. My curiosity is now officially perked!!!!!!
Erika Slaughter says
I have that Bobbi Brown mask and haven’t used it in a while! I need to get that out ASAP!
Megan Stembridge says
I also LOVE skin care and products! One tip I recently received was that moisturizer needs to go after RetinA. It needs something to “lock it in” to your skin.
Thanks for sharing your products!
Narci says
Oh, I just love your skin care posts!! You always have the best product suggestions!!!
Gina says
Turning 40 next year, so I am in need of a facial routine. Can’t wait to try this.
kathy says
I bought a travel size of the Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin mask off of ebay. It smells divine. I think it worked great – I wish it were a little more affordable from Sephora. I loved it!
Alexis deZayas says
I was going to recommend that Fresh Rose face mask before I read you were already using it! I also love Clinique’s Pore Refining Solutions charcoal mask. I use it between my makeup remover and cleanser in the shower and can really tell a difference in my skin after!
Jennifer F says
I haven’t taken very good care of my skin in the past and I’ve just started using tretinoin. I’ve been searching for other really good products and have seen so many people recommend SkinMedica and Skinceuticals, both of which are incredibly expensive, but I may try them out. I’ll have to look into these products, too!
lauren says
Ditto Megan- I was always under the impression that RetinA goes on first, on very dry skin after you’ve washed your face? I was told to let it sit for about 20 minutes, then follow with serums and moisturizer. ?
Mix and Match Mama says
My derm told me to put it on last because it was better over the moisturizer. I’m sure either way is effective.
Michelle says
I love these posts! I’m a skincare junkie ? Have you ever read any of Paula Begoun’s books on skincare? She explains so much about deciphering labels, how jar packaging can degrade the contents, why scent is harmful to the skin, the absolute importance SPF daily, and all sorts of useful skincare info. It’s nice to feel informed when shopping for skincare!
Angelique at FourPointsMom.com says
There are so many new products on your list today – I think it’s time to do some shopping! If you haven’t tried the Rodan + Fields Microderm paste, I highly recommend it. My face literally glows the following day. Also, I’m curious about your retin a application too. I’m going to ask my derm again about when to use it. 🙂

Mary Jane McNeill says
Oh yes!! And then the little blue serum capsule that goes on after that. My skin feels soft as BUTTAH after that!
Ashley says
How long do you keep face masks 1-3 on?
Mix and Match Mama says
Usually about 10 minutes!
Traci Rivard says
Shay, good morning! thanks for your blog. I love reading it! I use EVER skincare.
http://www.everskin.com/with/tracirivard2 Check it out. I think you’d LOVE it!

I love the fresh mask – all of their products are just the best. I need a good serum – might need to try the Estée Lauder one next. So far the ones I’ve used make my face feel sticky :/
Anissa says

Thanks for sharing ! For what purpose do you use the Retin A? I used it as a teenager for pimples!

I’m told it helps with cell turnover and preventing/minimizing fine lines and wrinkles!

I use a whole range of products from special order to over the counter. I just added Aveeno Ageless Intensive blackberry serum to my day and night routine, and it made a HUGE difference in just days. I read about it in a magazine and it protects your skin from free radicals, and all that stuff. I just put a thin layer on before my moisturizer (am) and night cream (night) and it has made my skin clear and so so soft! It’s in drugstores and not expensive-try it! 🙂

Tina says
Rodan & Fields Active Hydration Serum is officially my FAVORITE skincare product. I’ve seen it explained, using a grape and raisin analogy. They’re the same fruit, but one is hydrated and the other dehydrated. I use it day and night and that’s exactly how I would describe what it’s done for my skin! “Crepey” skin runs in my family and I could already see some signs of it on my face.☹️ That’s completely gone now and I’ve only used it since June! Idk if Erika still sells R+F, but I definitely recommend asking her for some if she does!?
Amy says
I love Murad products! I switch between the Clinique SPF primer and the Murad Oil Control Mattifying Primer. I just turned 20, and based on your suggestions I want to start retin-A.
Jennifer Furrey says
Just curious….does SPF break anyone else out? Every product I’ve used with SPF makes me break out and I hate it. I keep hearing about how important it is but I never use it because of this.
Jen says
Try Glytone spf 40. It’s oil free, lightweight and is my favorite daily facial spf ever!! Their mild face wash is great too!
Megan says
Have you ever tried LimeLight products? The skincare line is chemical/toxin free and the makeup products are what the pros use. I would love to talk with you more about it!

Kate Somerville Daily Cleanser Exfoliokate smells AHHHMAAZING and leaves your skin feeling so soft!
Sandi says
My favorite is Paula’s Choice 2% BHA, it’s an exfoliant that I use at night, before anything else. It leaves my skin so soft.
Amanda @ That Inspired Chick says
You have such great skin! I’m going to check some of these out for sure!
That Inspired Chick
Ginger says
If you haven’t, you should try LXMI at night. It’s a very rich night cream. It feels really greasy, but it isn’t; doesn’t leave any stains on your pillow. I was amazed at how smooth my skin looked, especially around my eyes, after using it a short time. I originally got it in a TestTube to try and ended up purchasing the full size on QVC. It is only one ingredient, and the story behind it is very interesting.
Kelli says
Love reading about all these products! I am 44 & started using the Ever skincare line this summer. It is amazing! Love everything in this line! Especially the eye/face serum, the tinted spf moisturizer and the retinol eye smoother & overnight facial oil. https://www.everskin.com/with/kellikucera
Tomorrow the travel size set comes out. You should try it!
Amber Mckee says
Hi Shay,
I know before you were using R&F products, are you no longer using them? I thought you had said your friend sold them as well. Curious as to know why you no longer use them?
Mix and Match Mama says
I used it for three years and loved it! Erika has stopped selling it, so when I ran out, I decided to try some new things. I’m still a fan of R+F though!
Renee says
i think you have convinced me on the Chanel eye cream.
Kelly Franks says
I was going to ask you why you stopped using the r&f eye cream but now I know. Another question. Did Retin-A make your skin red and dry and flaky at first?
Mix and Match Mama says
Erika isn’t selling it any longer, so when I ran out, I decided to experiment with new things. I still love R+F though!!
Caroline Hall says
I’m a college student in Alabama and every girl/woman I know uses Rodan+Fields. We all started using it in highschool and have kept using it. We use “unblemish”. But my mom and all of her friends use “redefine”. It’s amazing. I think you can buy it online now, but you used to only be able to buy it through a consultant. The products come in four steps and are super easy and short. Rodan+Fields was started in Alabama so that is why it’s so popular here but it’s also spreading throughout the deeeper South (Mississippi, Tennessee, etc). Definitely worth looking at!!!
Emily King says
I love a lot of the same products as you. I do get hormonal breakouts, so I use this at night: https://www.amazon.com/Mama-Mio-Gorgeous-Balancing-Facial/dp/B00HNTQVBS/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1506953860&sr=8-1&keywords=mama+mio+face+wash. It may be one to try if you ever have a round of breakouts. I also love the Rodan & Fields roller once a week before my Retin-A to give myself a facial. I agree on moisturizers then Retin A, my face peels otherwise!
Laci says
I love a good face mask. I am currently working my way through R+F microdermabrasion paste. It makes my face feel amazing. Love beauty post, I need to grab some of that moisture surge with winter coming.
Meredith says
Love this post! I have been wanting to try some sort of mask weekly so I’m looking forward to seeing responses. Here are my faves.
Make up remover: Bobbi Brown instant long wear. This has been a staple for me for > 10 years
Face wash: kate Somerville daily exfolikate
Moisturizer (summer): Kate Somerville oil free moisturizer
Moisturizer (winter): Bobbi Brown hydrating face cream
Exfoliator twice weekly: Kate Somerville exfolikate (this stuff if amazing. Just started using a month ago. Called “Hollywood’s 2 minute facial”
Eye cream: Rodan&fields
Layla says
Hi Shay, would you be willing to do a post talking about what treatments you’ve had in-office at the derm and what you do now? I’ve been following along for years and I know you’ve talked about it before… I’m new to the wild world of skincare and would love to know what your thoughts are on different in-office treatments you’ve had done!
Kelly Franks says
I agree. I would love to see this too. Your skin is gorgeous. Sorry I’m stalking all the comments tonight. Lol!
Katie M says
Can you only get Retin-A through the dermatologist? Is there anything you can purchase over the counter?
Rachael Stout says
Thanks for the face-mask recommendation. Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer is my favorite, I can wear just that without foundation.
Constance says
I started using Valmont moisturizer and it’s so hydrating! It’s light and my skin feels great in the morning.
Stephie Chipp says
I heart your skin care posts! Thank you for the tips!
Susan says
I am a big fan of EltaMD for SPF protection…amazing for sensitive skin.

I love reading about your skin care recommdations! I love TULA too-buy it off of QVC when they have special offers!
I like to use PETER THOMAS ROTH Firm Peeling Gel- use it twice a week than I use a Dr. Dennis glow pad that you got me hooked on?

Hey Shay! I love this post, I worked in the cosmetics department in college and you are right about the Estee Lauder Serum, it has a following like no other! I’m curious if you have established a skin care regimen for the girls yet? I did not grow up learning how important it is to care for our skin. I have started both of my kids using cleansing wipes every night and recently bought a Neutrogena ultra gentle cleanser for my daughter. Is there anything you do with your kiddos you would recommend?
Mix and Match Mama says
Urg. No. I am taking any and all recommendations for kiddos too!
Meg says
After seeing you talk about the Pumpkin mask, I got Peter Roth’s mask sampler…I am loving all of them so far. The mud one feels like it really cleans out your skin :-). Always love the Glam glow masks too.
Vy Garcia says
I just recently got the Clinique Moisture Surge as well and I AM IN LOVE! It’s amazing! If you haven’t already tried Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask, you should, it’s great. I will have to try the pumpkin one. Great suggestions! Thank you for sharing.
Jennifer says
You can try Differin which a retinol product that previously was prescription but now over the counter
Gail says
I am almost 65 and people have stopped me for years to comment on my skin. I’ve always used great products and lately I am using products from Sheeperfect, a local Seattle online company. You only need a small amount so it goes a long way and is affordable. They use very pure sheep lanolin and my skin is the best it has ever been, even better than when I was in my 30’s and 40’s!
Tamra says
You have to try the Rodan + Fields Active Hydration Serum… This stuff is AMAZING! I use it on my face, neck, and hands at night with my regimen… it is pretty much magic! 🙂
Kim says
I love Beautycounter and the fact that their products are free of all chemicals and harsh ingredients.
Susie says
What happened to your silver mask? Do you still use it?
Mix and Match Mama says
I ran out of that one and decided to try something new instead. I would say that the Tula one probably replaced that one in my arsenal!
Emily says
Are there any procedures at a day spa/derm that you’d recommend? Facial peels, botox, anything a little stronger than a topical but not invasive! 🙂
Lauren says
Laura Mercier’s flawless skin face polish is amazing. I use it every 2-3 days while in the shower. Also, Caudalie’s overnight detox oil has been a serious game changer for my skin.
Christina McCoy says
Love, love, love your skincare posts! Do you ever use a toner?
I really like the Tata Harper moisturizing mask. It’s pricey but it’s non-toxic and lasts forever ❤️
Crystal McDonald says
Yay!!! I’ve been waiting for a skincare post!!! Wahoo! Just ordered the Tula hydrating cream! Can’t wait to get it in. Thanks for sharing!
Jenny says
When (i.e. Morning or night) & how often (how many times a week) do you use your clarisonic with this regimen?! Also when you say you use a mask at no get is that after you’ve cleansed and then follow mask with serum, moisturizer, Retin a etc?!?! Thanks!!! Have a great day 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
I would say that I use my Clarisonic about every other day at night with my face wash.
Jenny says
Sorry when you use your mask at night I meant- autocorrect drives me nuts sometimes!
Taylor says
Katey Mcfarlan got me hooked on Tula products! Love skincare posts.
Mix and Match Mama says
She was one of the ones who convinced me too!

I’m curious about washing your face with coconut oil. I assume the goal isn’t to try to get it all off once you’ve washed your makeup off? I just imagine so much scrubbing!
Mix and Match Mama says
Coconut oil is so moisturizing! I use it in the morning (when I don’t have on makeup), but you can use it at night and it easily and effortlessly wipes off all makeup (including stubborn eye makeup!).
Avril Jones says
You have some great products here no doubt but they only take care of the epidermis.

Katie Brenning says
I have been using SeneGence skin care and love it! My skin has never felt or looked better!
Kelly Evans says
I am 46 and I have always had great skin. We flooded in Hurricane Harvey and all of a sudden, I swear I look ten years older. Girls, I’m serious. I have dark circles under my eyes, which I have never had!
I’ve been using Rodan and Fields for about a year and I was about to stop using it when I looked in the mirror one day and saw a HUGE difference in my skin. I’m not a consultant, so this is an unpaid testimonial. I would love some ideas for undereye miracle creams that will help get rid of these bags and dark circles. I realize a lot of this is situational stress, but this southern girl cannot go on looking like this, even in these trying times!
Kacy says
Clinique’s moisture surge is the best!
Amy says
I cannot live without my Estée Lauder advanced night repair! I also can’t live without my Beautycounter balancing facial charcoal mask, I feel like a new woman every time I use it. And I second the retin A, so important for preventing wrinkles.
Madeline says
How do you keep your teeth nice and pearly white?

Ha! Crest White Strips 🙂

LOVE reading about your routine and recommendations! So helpful! Your skin looks fabulous!

I love the Meaningful Beauty products. The day and night serums are wonderful!! I started 4 months ago and see such a change.
Renee says
What king of shampoo and conditioner are you using these days?
Mix and Match Mama says
Moroccanoil!

I love all of these suggestions and am obsessed with facial masks. I use Beautycounter and have never loved products more. I now sell the products and love how safe they are without chemicals and really appreciate the desire behind the company to get safe products into the hands of everyone!

if you’re on a budget, which am and which pm product would you use/recommend the most?

The Tula (so you can use it both AM & PM) and the night serum.

I love this post so much! Just wondering if you have any experience using the Skinceuticals? I was recommended this brand but would love to hear from someone using it 🙂
JJ Mercer says
LOVE this post! So VERY intrigued on washing with coconut oil in the a.m……do you just rub it on and then wipe it off? No water or additional cleanser? I think it would be great but didn’t know if the application of make up afterward would be effected…..
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s right!! You’ll love it!
Jenny says
How many times a week would you say you use the Bobbi brown facial scrub?! And Is that am or pm? Also, with the Clinique moisture surge mask do you use that every night after your pm products or how many nights per week ?? Thanks! Looking forward to getting these products 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
I probably use that one once a week at night. And I use the Clinque one about 3 times a week!
Heidi says
Hey Shay! I’m so curious about the Retin-A…. When you first started the Retin-A, did you use it every day, or slowly work your way up to everyday use? Did your skin go through a ‘yucky” period while it was getting used to the product? Do you use it all over your face, or just in certain spots? Have you ever used it under your eyes?
Mix and Match Mama says
I started by using a dose that was too high (my face was always red and flaky). When they backed me off the higher dose, I could use it daily. And I use it all over.
Pamela Kennedy says
I recently learned about Philosophy’s “Purity made simple facial wash”. Some Philosophy products bother me a bit. I have really sensitive eyes. I kept hearing that this will take off your makeup and every last bit of it. You can even rub your lashes, open your eyes, …and it doesn’t burn or anything! It is amazing! It has won several awards for best makeup remover and cleanser. Give it a try…I think you will like it.
Pamela Kennedy says
One more thing! ( I get so excited when it comes to skin products! Woo Hoo!) Josie Maran Whipped Body Butter. This is more of an all over moisturizer. You can get unscented, which I love, or you can get one of the scented ones. They are natural and none of the scents have a strong smell…very subtle. I adore these and on QVC, they have huge sizes around the holidays plus new limited scents. Vanilla apricot, unscented, and vanilla bean are all great…but there is also lavender citrus and other really yummy scents, too. Also, the Josie Maran Milk is great. Her line is based around Argan Oil. Okey Doke, hope that helps!
Meredith says
Biologique Recherche products changed my skin, especially their P 50 Lotion/Toner and the Masque Vivant. I had adult acne and had tried everything, but these were a game changer! They’re pricey, but worth it!
Maya says
I noticed someone else mentioned Philosophy Purity Made Simple cleanser- seeing its raved about in so many magazines, reviews, Sephora, Ulta, etc just curious if you ever tried it? And if so, what did you think?
Mix and Match Mama says
I haven’t tried it but maybe I should???
Maya says
They say it doesn’t dry out your skin and removes all makeup including eye makeup- no need for extra cleansers just one step/product :-). If you do try it out can you post a review on your blog so we know if it’s worth it or not! Enjoy your day!!!
Eryn says
BeautyCounter! I’m really just getting started with this brand. Over the last few months I’ve begun to switch my facial products as well as my makeup little by little. We don’t realize all the toxic chemicals we put on our face through cleansers, masks, makeup products. This company’s mission is all about safe products. I’m 32 (soon to be 33) and I’m beginning to realize how important it is! I also still get monthly facials for the benefits but really just some me time!!
Laura says
Can anyone recommend a good wrinkle cream for my eye lids?
Tara Friedmann says
Try the It cosmetics CC cream it has SPF 50 and provides great coverage! I just bought it and I’m in love and apparently it’s really popular!
Katie says
Tartes exfoliate charcoal stick is amazing. They only sell you one per order because they can’t keep up with the demand. I love it- all natural. I’m also a fan of Kiehls products. I’m using the midnight recovery oil right now before bed and I wake up with hydrated, plump looking skin. I will definitely try out Estée Lauder’s night repair oil next. Another one of my all time favorites is Lancôme’s energie de vie- it’s a liquid moisturizer I put it on before my make up and it helps with all the little areas on my face that are flaky and dry, helps with a nice dewy glow without it being a cream lotion.
