Helllllllo Monday!
I hope you guys all had the best weekend! Anyone besides me freaking out a little that Christmas is NEXT WEEK?! Where does the time go????? We were able to enjoy some of our favorite holiday activities over the last few days, so that’s such a blessing, but I’m not ready for the season to end. I’ll have more on that later this week…today, I thought I’d share a little update on some of us as so many of you have sent me the sweetest messages, emails and comments praying for us, encouraging us and wishing us well.
I’ll go first…as you now know, I had a hysterectomy last Friday. I’m sure I’ll get into all of that at a later time, but I think it’s probably a little too premature to do that now. I want to finish healing before I start answering questions and explaining/describing my recovery. So many of you have reached out about possibly having one too, and I’d love to answer your questions, but I want to make sure I have the full picture before I offer my insight and experience. Right now, I’m like 9 days out and still very much recovering. I do feel like I’m on the upswing, but I also know that recovering from this type of surgery is not fast and every day is different. Many of you asked what exactly I had removed and the answer is everything. They took not only my uterus, but my ovaries and fallopian tubes too. I have been doing hormone replacement therapy for 7 years now (you can read more about that HERE), but clearly, I’ll need to do an updated post on that as well now that I realllllly have to manage my own hormones. In the meantime, I go later this week for my post-op appointment and am hoping he thinks I’m recovering as well as I do. I’m feeling great this morning, so that’s a plus! This week, I’m going to rest as much as I can in-between the fun holiday things we have planned.
Now, an update on Kensington. On November 15th, our oldest kiddo went under general anesthesia for the very first time to have a biopsy. The results came back and they were what we were expecting/prepared for. They have confirmed one issue, but we’re still waiting on more information about a second one. Once we know exactly what’s going on, I’ll let you know, but in the meantime, I wanted you to know that she’s doing great and handling everything in stride. We have our ups and downs, but she’s really grown and matured this fall due to all of this, and I’m so proud of her. So many of you have asked about Kensington, and I just wanted you to know that she’s doing well. Thank YOU for your kindness this fall.
Finally, our Madeley Moo. Oh geez, I was waiting to share this until I knew exactly what was going on, buuuuuuuuut who knows when that will be?! Back in April, Andrew and I took her to the endocrinologist because we were concerned about her growth. She’s pretty tiny for her age, so about once a year, she sees the endocrinologist for a check up. This time around, the doctor had some concerns and ran a blood panel that included a few labs on her liver annnnnnd…her liver enzymes were elevated. So, off we went to see another doctor about her liver. Fast forward to November and she has been poked, prodded and examined more times than I can count trying to figure out her liver. She’s had images taken, she’s given so much blood, we have had so many tests and even though we’re very thankful that we’ve been able to cross off things, we still don’t know the problem. Sooooo…she was supposed to have had a liver biopsy in December, BUT the last round of genetic testing came back in November and concluded that yes, her liver enzymes are elevated and acting up, BUT it’s probably because of her kidneys. Urg. We haven’t been looking at her kidneys. So, tomorrow, she actually goes in to see about her kidneys for the first time. Before they go in to do a liver biopsy, they want to make sure they don’t need to do a kidney one too (or maybe it’s just the kidneys?!). So…it’s been 9 months and we’re still going in circles. A lot of things they’ve eliminated over the last nine months are good. We’ve eliminated pediatric liver cancer, all sorts of Hepatitis, a variety of things she might have contacted from her birth mother, and some things she could have contracted from the conditions she was born in to. They feel very confident that whether it be the liver or the kidneys, it’s genetic and not a result of something that happened to her in China. We’re eventually going to get to the bottom of this liver/kidney situation, but for now, it’s been almost 9 months and we still don’t know anything.
So. That’s what we’ve been doing lately.
I know this doesn’t give you all the details, but honestly, we don’t have them yet ourselves. I’m still waiting to see how long it takes to recover from hysterectomy, we’re still waiting on Kensington’s results and we’re still waiting on Mades too…but that’s a little update for you.
Thank you again so much for all of your prayers and words of encouragement. I read every single one and they all mean so much!
Now. Anyone ready to find out who won…
…those two Gucci bags?!
Sheaffer and I are excited to tell you that SARAH SALAZAR is the big winner!

You certainly have had your share of stress this season. I don’t know why some seasons are like that, but I certainly am thankful that Jesus can handle it all for us. I will be praying for your family and hope that you all recover well and enjoy this Christmas season.

Amen to that, Susan!

Ahna says
So sorry, Shay! That has to be painful for your mama’s heart! I just wrote on my blog about the life and death of my best friend who passed away a week ago after battling breast cancer, and boy, sometimes it’s hard to write our struggles down on paper because it makes it even more real. Praying, this Christmas, anyone experiencing that difficult dichotomy of “sorrowful yet rejoicing” (2 Corinthians 6:10) would be lifted up, and He would breathe His glorious hope and rest into us all! Hugs to you and your sweet girls!
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m so sorry for your loss. It makes me think about my Manda. God bless you and her family this season.
Ahna @ Hammers N Hugs says
Your friend actually crossed my mind because I remember you honoring her love for Jesus through a post even this many years later and I loved that. Heather would have wanted the same. I only started blogging a year ago and never thought I would be writing such a hard post on a DIY inspiration blog, but I appreciate how you have used it as a platform. So thanks for that. XO

Sweet K is sooo pretty now. EXACTLY like your mother in law! I can’t believe it
Have a great day.
Michelle J says
Wow. That is a lot going on at once. Prayers for all of you. I have a daughter that is small for her age and had elevated liver enzymes. She has glycogen storage disease type VI, which was found through a liver biopsy and managed through diet. It seemed to take forever to eliminate other things and to get test results back. Waiting through the unknown is hard. So prayers for you during this waiting game.
Cristina says
Hi Shay and Michelle,
My kid’s AST and ALT are around 80. We don’t know where to start, which kind of doctor. Any suggestions? Thank you!
Cristina
Natalie Alvarado says
Praying for the health of your family today!
Michelle J says
Cristina – we started with the liver clinic at the Children’s Hospital in our state. We were then referred to the genetic clinic there. I would think your primary doctor would know where to refer you. But if you aren’t getting the right help, always ask for a second opinion.
Cristina says
Michelle, thank you!
Kristen Cole says
Thinking about you and your family! Hoping you guys find answers soon! Xoxo
Jill says
Praying for you and your family. That’s a whole lot going on, I hope you get to enjoy all the Christmas festivities you want to and truly enjoy the down Christmas time spent with loved ones.
Joyce says
Did you get Madeley tested for Wilson’s disease? It’s a fairly rare genetic disease but one sign of it is elevated liver enzymes.
Mary Ann says
Daily reader here-just wanted to say thank you for your openness and know that you are being prayed for. I will believe that your whole family will feel a special “Emmanuel’ (God is with us) touch this holiday season. Thank you for all you do to brighten my day. Merry Christmas!
Paula says
Sounds like a season of waiting and through my experience, that is always the toughest. Having a plan, even if tough, is always easier than waiting.
Praying for you all and all that lies ahead. I really hope the next two weeks are super sweet and peaceful before heading into 2020.
Gillian says
Oh Shay. I am so sorry to hear about all of this, what a stresssful time. You guys are in my prayers and I have my fingers tightly crossed for good news for all three of you 🙂 glad to hear you’re feeling good after your hysterectomy, take it easy and enjoy the holiday season with your family and friends!

Jonna Adams says
My son has a rare genetic growth disorder called Russell Silver Syndrome (RSS) which is something you may want to look into. His original genetic testing came back normal so they had to test again and go into his 7th & 11th chromosome because that’s where RSS is usually found. His came back in the 11th chromosome and he has what’s called RSS 11p15 with LOM. However genetic testing can come back normal but you can also be clinically diagnosed with RSS as well. He’s on daily growth hormone injections and thriving. I encourage you to look into the Magic Foundation. They are a wonderful organization that can help with any type of growth disorders/issues and can maybe help you find some answers. There is Turners Syndrome to look into as well. As I heal from my own major surgery, I wish your family many blessings and answers this holiday season.
Kristi says
Wishing you a speedy recovery and that you have answers soon for Kensington and Madeley. I had a robotic hysterectomy a year ago – it was a sad decision to make, but it was for the best, especially because of my underlying health issues. An added bonus is that I don’t have to dread that time of the month!
Randi Jo Rooks says
Thank you so much for sharing your life with so many. I’ve been wondering and praying and I’m so grateful for the update. You are shining brightly so of course attacks will come – but God is sovereign! He is your shield and defender. He will help you not fear and will use all for good. Praying His presence love and comfort is so real to you this season. Keep shining!!!!
Ashlea Patterson says
Praying for you and your family! Always remember that god loves you and wants good for you even if it doesn’t always feel that way.
Molly says
Thinking of your sweet girls and hoping you get answers soon. This is totally unrelated but I made your sausage and smoked Gouda cups this morning for a work party. OMG idk if they will make it to the party! My husband and I can’t stop eating them!
Mix and Match Mama says
This made me happy! Thank you, Molly!
Jennifer says

How do you keep your spirits up? Do you ever feel downright depressed? I’m amazed by your bright spirit on your blog. What are all the things you do or what is it about who you are that helps you get through such hard times? I am so inspired by you.
Mix and Match Mama says
Of course!! I rely on Jesus for my strength, but yes, some days, I get really down. I’m thankful for “my people” who are always there for me.
Greta says
My thoughts exactly! I am amazed by Shay’s spirit and happiness that she tries to maintain during these truly difficult times. A very inspiring lady for a lot of women and me, personally. She has been a huge influence in my life.
Amy W Getz says
Shay . . . that’s a lot for one mama to handle. I don’t often comment but feel very compelled to let you know that you are being lifted up. Answers will come . . . you will handle it all with grace . . . and I pray that all the resolutions will be fabulous! Hugs and love from one mama to another. xoxo

Praying for you specifically this morning that you can enjoy a peaceful and restful Christmas season. for healing and for answers heading into the new year.
Beth Valenta says
Praying for all of you sweet girls.
Kathy Lang says
I imagine the uncertainty with Madeley and waiting for more info on Kensington can add to the stress, so I am praying for answers and direction soon. I believe God uses your family and this blog to bring joy to others~ such a blessing. I continue to pray that God heals you, and all in the Shull family that need it.
Kristin says
That is more than any family should have to deal with at one time. How hard it must be to take care of yourself when you must be so worried about Kensington and Madeley. I hope that your faith is helping you deal with this, though I know for me, it really doesn’t! Praying for great outcomes for all of you.
Erin Smith says
Shay, my heart just sank reading all that you guys have been walking through. Praying now for peace and strength in the waiting.
Ann Walker says
Continued prayers for you and your family. Take your time, heal, love your family. You are very generous to share so much of your life with us. You have every right to take your time to decide what and when you want to share.
I had a complete hysterectomy when I was 45. (I am 61 now). After much trial and error, and really wanting to be as safe as possible, I have had great success with the Vivelle Dot which is a patch.
Good luck finding your balance.
Lisa B says
You are younger than I was when I had a total hysterectomy, but have never regretted it as the symptoms leading to it were so bothersome. Hormone replacement went well, and I always said I wish I had done it earlier.
But kids having trouble, now that is a real worry for a mom. Hang in there.
Marie Claas says
I mentioned this once before, several years back when you mentioned Madeley was on the smaller side. My 7 year old girl has mosaic Turner’s Syndrome. It’s a genetic disorder that affects growth, there are learning delays with speech etc., and it can affect kidneys (their shape and function) and heart, and later it affects reproduction. It has to do with the X chromosome, given by the father. To look at my little girl, you would never know anything is wrong. Just giving you another possibility to explore. I’m praying for all of you!
Charly says
Praying for strength and healing for all 3 of you girls ❤️ God bless your sweet family. Prayers from Kansas ❤️
Lauren says
Blessings to you and your family! So strong of you to share and just know the community is thinking of you and praying for you. Merry Christmas
Kristin says
Reading your update…and it was like I was reading WebMD because I left there in a panic. Lol. My 5 year old is also adopted (30 week preemie by guess could be younger, bio mom on meth, don’t know who her dad is). She is the size of a 3 year old. We have done bone age testing and other testing and all is normal. Figured she was just the runt. My question, are they wondering if the liver is causing her to be small (never heard of that) or was it by mistake that they found elevated liver enzymes?
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m going to say it was thanks to divine intervention they did the liver panel. She’s small, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem. xo
Skimama says
My goodness you have a lot on your plate. I’m praying for each of you and hope you get answers and healing for everyone soon.
Dawn Engle says
SO much to deal with during an already crazy/busy season! Praying that you and your sweet girls recover/know what is going on soon!!
Amanda Wilson says
I will be praying for you all!! The unknown is so hard sometimes Shay especially for a mom who wants to help and fix things. MY quiet time this morning was this quote “Love the cross and let us remember that we are not alone in carrying it. God is helping us and with God who is comforting us we can do anything” Merry Christmas to you guys’ll!!

Shawna @ Lunchbox Babies says
Praying for you and your sweet family! Hoping you have some clarity and peace by Christmas. Much love.
Lisa says
That’s a lot going on! Keeping you all in my prayers. Start a journal, if you don’t already do that. I’ve found much comfort in looking back at the valleys my family and I have been through at various seasons and finding that Christ was there, working things out for us, even when I felt abandoned at times. That’s not to say we always got the answer we wanted, but He always sent the right people to us in those circumstances. It helps me get through the bumps now, and the inevitable ones that will come in the future, to know He is always there, in control. Merry Christmas to you and your sweet family!
Mary says
Praying for your sweet family! Wishing you a very happy holiday season!
Karen says
Wow Shay! You guys are dealing with a lot right now. I know you are no stranger to dealing with health issues and kids, but you have a lot at the moment. I know from experience that health issues with your kids and yourself can be very stressful on the whole family. My prayers are with you and your family and I pray that you experience a deep and abiding peace.
Amanda Jennings says
Praying for you and your sweet family in this difficult and uncertain season. Lord, please cover this family with your healing arms and give them the peace that only you can give. Amen.
Kim says
Shay, oh my goodness, you are the perfect example of get up, dress up and show up!! I don’t know how you do it sweet lady. You inspire me every day and make me feel like a big wimpy cry baby lol! I only had a partial hysterectomy and was a HOT mess for weeks. You are brave, beautiful, strong and courageous and you don’t know it but you’ve been keeping this lonely empty nester company for years now. God bless you and your family. Hugs and prayers coming your way! ❤
Sara says
Wishing your family the very best. That sure is a lot going on….
FaithG says
I’m also in a season of waiting and not knowing my health results so I can only imagine that times three (times 4 with all your girls). Praying for answers, peace and healing for your family. Your faith in God is a blessing to see.
Brooke Garwood says
Praying for your precious family! Its so hard when our kiddos are sick or we just know things arent right! I respect and admire your fight for your kids… we are their advocate here on earth. I’m thankful He goes before us and promises to walk in the valleys alongside us. Thank you for being vulnerable! Jesus shines through you ?
Correna Parkinson says
I’ve had 10 surgeries in the last 10 years and my hysterectomy was my latest back in June. I commented to my husband that perhaps it was my age (I’m only 38!) or else the type of surgery but I found my recovery process so much harder and longer with it than even my discectomy surgeries. The recovery kicked my butt for a week …. lots fo sleeping, pain meds. But after a week, I felt like I was back on the upswing. So praying for you Shay, that this will be the same for you!
Beth says
Omg! That’s a lot, your poor mama heart, but somehow your smile hasn’t faded! Prayers for holiday peace and healing health
Rachel says
What a season you have been in – continued prayers for you and your sweet family! I don’t know if you remember from my book (Expect God), but our daughter, Lily, has tiny ear pits (one beside each ear). When she was first seen at our International Adoption Clinic the doctor told us that your kidneys and ears are formed at the same time in the womb, so the ear pits could indicate a problem. She had her first of many many tests and we are still uncovering things 12 years later! Anyway, we’ve been through a lot of tests/surgeries/diagnoses with her kidneys and other issues – please reach out if you have any specific questions – I’m happy to share with you more of our experience. I pray you all have a blessed and merry Christmas!
LB says

Praying HE will glance your way and breathe healing over you and your girls.

Tammy M says
Hi Shay. I had a hysterectomy in my late 30’s about 15 years ago and have never regretted. My only advice is get plenty of rest and take it easy. Some days you might feel you can move around like normal but everything will be very tender inside even after several months. A friend of mine recently ended up back in the hospital with a severe infection because she over did it at home so please be careful. I didn’t start feeling like myself until after a year of my surgery but like you said, everyone is different. Anyway, I have been reading your posts for a few years now and feel as if I know you and your family personally. Even though I don’t normally leave comments, I felt it in my heart to let you know I am praying for you and your sweet girls . Hang in there.
Prayers from Orlando, Florida,
Tammy

I pray you all will have good outcomes with your health challenges. But do you not worry about putting all this personal health information about your kids online for thousands of people to read? It’s your job to protect their privacy.

Merry Christmas to you and yours. ?❤?

Prayers for your whole family- you’ve got a lot in the ‘unknown’ category of life right now, and coming from one planner to another, that is VERY challenging to let go and let God. I’ll pray for that for you too!
Laura Reimer says
Pretty easy to read your posts, see your beautiful family and think you are immune to the hard parts of life on planet earth. Thank you for your honesty and transparency and please know i am praying for you all. I had a hysterectomy and even though I was well past child-bearing years and in my 50’s, that is a very special part of me. The place where my most valued people began their lives and there was a deep kind of loss knowing all of it was who knows where now. I am also praying for your children – that is very difficult to have any one thing – and all three together are a lot. Prayers abound. You brighten my day each morning – thank you for what you do <3
Haley says
Each of you are on my heart!

Praying for all of you, especially those sweet kiddos!! I know anything with our kids scares us so much, but prayer changes things!! I had a TAH almost 20 years ago and I can honestly say it was the BEST thing I ever did!! It eliminated so much misery. Recovery is tough but it’s so worth it. I hope y’all have the merriest Christmas ever and a blessed new year!!❤️
Dana says
Oh, Shay. This is so much to deal with at one time. It reminds me of some health scares we had with 2 of our kids several years ago. One was a heart issue and I was so shaken and scared, but it turned out to be literally nothing. He also was very small for his age and after years of testing, he was diagnosed with familial short stature (he’s just petite, lol.) Fast forward 5 years later and our 4th baby started having terrifying seizures (she would turn blue and cold to the touch) just as we had moved to a foreign country and had no real community and barely spoke the language.
I remember in those moments not being able to ‘feel’ God was near, but now looking back I can see it so clearly. I hope that as you are going through all of this you can trust that God is near, but if you don’t ‘feel’ it, remember that He really is and sometimes he even allows us to see a glimpse of why He allowed certain things later on. You have been on my mind and in my prayers for the last 10 days or so and will continue to be! Oh, and listening to Scripture and good preaching (John Piper is a favorite!) also helps me to remember He really is there even when I’m struggling in my own faith. I’m not saying you are, but I know I was when everything felt so overwhelming!
Robin Thompson says
Shay, my heart goes out to you and your family. That is way too much stress at one time. My prayers are with all of you. Gods blessings to you.
Camille says
Hi Shay! My daughter is also adopted, elevated liver enzymes, low weight gain, tiny too! Tons o tests throughout her life—all the ones you mentioned plus cystic fibrosis, twice! She is now 15 and just this fall we finally got an answer! Her stomach over produces acid…she starts eating, stomach fills up w acid, then she doesn’t absorb what she ate, and she is full quickly. She is on an acid blocker and has gained 18 lbs in 4 months!! Anyway, it may not be that for your Madely, but maybe?! Merry Christmas!
Jordan says

I know you need it so much Shay because worrying about our children is the ultimate pain we Mama’s endure in this life. I thank God for your faith that you so freely share and God sees. It will be ok. Love to y’all.

Well, it doesn’t seem fair for all of you to be dealing with health issues all at once. Some seasons it seems like when it rains, it pours. I’ll continue to pray for you and your family. I think some years, depending on what is going on in my life, I lean more into the joys of Christmastime, and other years I identify more with the waiting, wondering, and uncertainty that are also a part of the Christmas story. Either way, I find comfort in Christmas. Hoping you can as well.
Sheryl says

Wow that is a whole lot for your family. Through it all there is lots of love and smiles. God has a plan for each one of us. He knows what is going to happen and is always near. He is holding all of you in His heart and hands.
You are so close and strong that now matter what happens you will get though it and be stronger because of it.
I had a hysterectomy when I was 28. They tried all kinds of hormone replacement but what finally worked for me was the patch. I changed it every 3 days it was quick easy and no weight gain or side effects for me. So happy it worked for me. When it came time to wean off of it to go into menopause it was easy. I am now 63.
My son was in the hospital when he was 8 and they didn’t know what was going on with him. Liver counts were sky high and all of his other levels were out of wack. They finally figured out he had, “Mono, with Stephen’s Johnson syndrome and Kawasaki disease”. He was one sick kid and we all thought he wasn’t going to make it. I stayed by his side for weeks. Prayed by his bed and they figured it out. He is a healthy, amazing 31 year old man now. We got our miracle. I still believes that God does miracles. Yours is on it’s way. Enjoy your Christmas and know that He is the reason for the season. He loves all of you. Hugs and blessings

Lots to go thru, especially during the holidays! Has Madley been tested for celiac disease? one of the crazy parts is that if effects everyone differently, but can attack organs like the liver and kidneys – and can also explain why she isnt growing/developing because you loose important nutrients when eating.
I was diagnosed as an adult because my liver numbers were elevated to a scary level, and after scans and tests and even a biopsy with no clear results, they did blood work and then a scope to confirm the celiac. Just a thought (and i know everyone is throwing suggestions at you!)
Jami says
Hi Shay… so sorry you’re dealing with all this. I will say a prayer for your girls. I also had to have a total hysterectomy last year when I was 39. I’m curious to what your doctor plans to do about hormones. Mine would not let me take any so I’ve had to manage menopause… at 39! Would love to chat about that. Curious how others around my age have handled it.

I had a full hysterectomy when I was 38, after being diagnosed with Uterine Cancer. That was 20 years ago and while the hormone thing was quite an uphill battle, I am so blessed to be healthy and Praising God for such wonderful doctors!! The best part about that surgery for me (Besides no more periods!) was realizing God’s plan for me through adoption! I don’t know if I would have actually traveled that journey if God hadn’t closed that door for me! And I am so thankful for His guidance and all of my blessings! Praying for you all and hoping you recover well, definitely do not push yourself! Hugs to your girls too! Our family will be praying for good results for both of them!

I pray you see this- my sister is also adopted from China. Probably about 4 years ago she started having kidney problems. Blood cells would pass in her stool and they didn’t know what was causing it. She went to Children’s Mercy hospital in Kansas City and the doctor immediately put her on a fish oil supplement and her symptoms went away. I think it is because they just have more fish in their diet than we do. I don’t know if this helps one bit but I had to at least say something!
Mix and Match Mama says
I see it, Laura! Thank you so much for sharing this with me!!!
Lauren says
