Today’s post is all about HAIR!
Lately, I’ve had some questions about whether or not I’ve changed up my hair routine, and the answer is YES.
At least, a little bit.
In September, I tweaked my normal routine. I still go to sleep most nights with my hair wet, but I’ve been using some new products PLUS my Revlon dryer brush. I also think my hair just looks healthier now because it’s not summer any more when my hair is daily abused by sun, chlorine and humidity. That in itself has helped tremendously. As much as I love “living outdoors” during the summer months, it kills my hair.
Today, I’m sharing my new little routine in case you’re curious/interested/love a beauty post like me 🙂 . I’m always about 2 minutes away from cutting my hair. I get it trimmed every seven weeks or so, and right now, it’s longer, but I’m always on the verge of a fresh cut. Anyone else?
So, here’s my new routine:
1: I almost always wash my hair at night and then sleep with it wet. On the rare occasion that I do not do that, then I still do this same routine, but either let my hair air dry as long as possible or pull out my Dyson dryer to get it 90% dry. I use THESE TOWELS on my hair when I get out of the shower to get a lot of the moisture out.
In September, my hair stylist told me to switch to THIS SHAMPOO and THIS CONDITIONER. It’s not fancy, but it not only smells really nice, it has totally hydrated my hair!! In fact, thanks to switching, I am using fewer styling products after I wash it.
2: So, after I shampoo and condition in the shower, I get out, wrap up my hair in this towel for a few minutes and then brush it out with my Wet Brush. Then, I apply a dollop of THIS for a bit of extra hydration and to smooth it out a bit/prevent frizz. From there, I either go to sleep with it wet, let it air dry or use my blow dryer to dry it 90% dry.
3: The next morning (or when I’m ready to style), my hair is always either dry or almost dry, but regardless, I still pull out my REVLON DRYER and run it over my hair. I think this smooths everything out, dries any hair that might still be wet and then also gives it a little lift and “life” after sleeping all night/air drying. RIGHT BEFORE I use that Revlon Dryer though, I smooth a little of THIS on my hair as a heat protectant (it also really hydrates/perks up second day hair!).
4: After my Revlon Dryer, I’m ready to curl. Instead of using my T3 wand (which I used for years!), I’ve been using a 1 inch T3 barrel. I divide my hair into three sections and curl away from my face.
5: After my hair is curled, I run my fingers through it to break up the curls and then give it a light spray of THIS hairspray.
And then, I’m done 🙂 .
Nothing fancy, just a few basics, but I do feel like my hair is much healthier this year than last year.
So, what’s your favorite hair product??? I always like to try new ones!! What’s your number one go to? And don’t forget, you can see my UPDATED MAKEUP ROUTINE HERE!
Happy Wednesday, friends!! xo

And I’m a big fan of your side part! I’m off to check out those towels NOW!
Alexis deZayas says
You NEED to get the Kevin Murphy carbon comb! I bought it from my hair dresser to run through my hair after I curl and I can’t live without it now!! I’ve been getting my hair cut every 8 weeks for about a year now and it has made such a difference in how healthy it is! How often do you have to wash your hair?
Mix and Match Mama says
I like Kevin Murphy products!! I need to try this! I wash it every other day!!
Laura says
Do you wash your hair every night? Love the Revlon, too!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Every other night! 🙂
Mary says
Do you section your hair into the 3 sections by putting it up on the top of your head or leave everything down and curl
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! Bottom, middle and then top section! Sorry! Should have clarified!!
Amber says
So you don’t curl the back? Just those three sections on each side?
Do you still put it up west in a bun while you sleep after washing? Or do you just leave it down while you sleep?
Mix and Match Mama says
I curl all the way around, I section the bottom off and then the middle and then do the top layer of my hair all the way around.

I love Aveda products. They have something for every hair type and texture plus it’s naturally derived. I love phomollient for body and air control Hairspray for light hold.
Mollie Lieux says
Love Kerastase!! I haven’t tried that product you mentioned but I LOVE the green bottle shampoo and conditioner!
Kelly Sites says
I’ve been using Colleen Rothschild hair mask in the shower every day (makes my hair so soft and shiny) and I love It’s a 10 product before I blow dry. The Revlon dryer makes my hair so soft and is a game changer.
Mix and Match Mama says
I need to try that CR hair product!!

I think I am the only female on the planet that feels like my Revlon hair dryer gets too hot on my hair…I wonder if I have a lemon? It does a good job it just gets so hot I feel it is going to damage my hair. Ayy! I went back to my T3 dryer…I love all things hair and make up!
Kelli says
Me too!! I quit using it—it’s so hot! My hairdresser actually told me that they are so damaging on hair! She had a client who had a major amount of thinning due to hair breakage and come to find out, it was from this hair dryer.
Adriana says
I had the same thing happen. I have super thick hair and felt it was starting to the thin. Love the look I get with the Revlon but it is way too hot. I have received a few minor burns from touching my hair after drying. I recently purchased the Dry Bar version of the blow dry round brush and it is SO much better. Even on the last layer of hair nothing feels hot but same if not better results because my hair is not fried. You can tell the quality is better as well (i.e. the bristles, temp settings, etc) Very happy with purchase- highly recommend.
Shayla says
I am curious about this, too! My Revlon dryer gets SO HOT…the handle is sometimes even too hot to hold so I have to let it cool down for awhile before I can finish drying my hair. Is this normal?! I have really thick hair that takes a long time to dry, but I love how smooth the Revlon makes it. Kinda have a love/hate thing going on with this dryer – ha!
Kaitlyn says
Kate from the smallthings blog said the same. She likes it but would love if it had temp options.
ERIKA MILLS says
It does get hot on the HIGH setting so you def need a heat protectant that goes up to 450*. However, the COOL setting is still high air flow but lower temp and that’s what I use to protect my hair (and of course a heat protectant!)
Sheila says
No you’re not alone! I call mine my hair torch… and I use a hairstyling glove with it. But I still love it, I only use it about 3 times a week. My hairs super thick and long so I pretty much have to put it on the highest setting.
Erin says
Don’t cut your hair, you will regret it! Mine was about your length maybe a little longer this time last year and I cut it right below my shoulders and am having the hardest time growing it out! My daughter got slime in her hair and decided to cut it out (she was almost 6 at the time, had only had two trims in her life, and her hair was pretty long) and she had to get a chin length bob, so I felt I should get mine cut in support of her . . . . I shouldn’t have, haha!
Alison T says
I am loving the IGK Beach Club volumizing texture spray. I use it after running the same Revlon dryer through my hair. It really gives it some nice lift and texture without feeling all tacky and stiff. Question: do you ever straighten your hair? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen you post any photos with straight hair, just waves/curls. 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
A spray? I need to check that out STAT!!
Shannon says
I recently purchased the Revlon dryer and LOVE it! I don’t wash my hair every day, so I still use my flatiron on days I don’t wash. Another great Shay recommendation!
Happy Holidays, to you and your beautiful family!
Mix and Match Mama says
You too!!!!!!
KayLynn Stone says
I’m sorry the hair girl in me cringes when I read you’re sleeping in wet hair. Wet hair is more delicate and it stretches and breaks easier.
Mix and Match Mama says
I hate how blow drying damages my hair though, so it always seems like a healthier option for me.
Erin Orwig says
Maybe a silly question, but don’t you get a lot of water marks on your pillow going to bed with your hair wet? Even if you have it in a bun?
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s a great question that I’ve never considered. My sheets are flannel…maybe that’s why???
Olivia says
I had been thinking your hair looked healthier! I’m going to incorporate some of your products to give my hair a reboot.
Lauren says
thank you for sharing as your hair always looks fab 🙂
someone recently recommended that anyone who loves the revlon brush should try the drybar version as it is lighter and doesn’t damage your hair as much so i just ordered it and am anxious to test it out. thought you might like trying it too! https://www.thedrybar.com/the-double-shot-blow-dryer-brush
Mix and Match Mama says
And now…I’m so intrigued…
Adriana says
it is AMAZING!! do it- will not regret 🙂
Emily says
I love Keune products! I bought one from a salon one time, but haven’t seen it anywhere else since. The Amazon link says it won’t be released until January 15. Do you just buy yours from the salon? Or have any other links where we could buy it from online?
Mix and Match Mama says
I bought mine at my salon. I just looked and found it somewhere else for you though and updated the link!! 🙂
Beth Valenta says
OK…I am combining posts, but where in NYC do you go to a blowdry bar? Is it costly?
Mix and Match Mama says
Dry Bar!! 🙂
Stacey says
Do you have any issue with oily hair? When I wash my hair at night, it tends to get oily by the end of the next day.
Mix and Match Mama says
No, my hair leans more dry than oily.
Pat says
Shay, this week and now today I’m struck by the fact you are looking so much like you sweet mother lately.
Mix and Match Mama says
Well, thank YOU!!
Cheryl says
I have totally noticed the same thing in the last few posts about the resemblance! ?
Melissa says
Love these posts. I am curious to also hear about your color routine, how often, do you just get highlights, root touch ups or base, etc. Happy holidays!
Mix and Match Mama says
I’ve been going to the same girl for 16 years now!! She does mostly highlights and then every once and a while, she’ll stick color on my roots 🙂 .
Sandi says
Couple of things…I couldn’t bring up your page from my usual link so I searched your name and IMBD has you listed as the Bachelorette …. thought that was pretty funny. Also can you PLEASE do a tour of your closet 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
I just hope they didn’t put that I picked Sean Lowe because that’s AWKWARD! Hahahaha! 😉
Meghan says
Thinking of buying the Revlon dryer for my mom who isn’t the best with curling irons ? Do you think it’d be easier for her to use?
Also – how many inches do you get cut every seven weeks?
Thanks!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes!! And typically, just a trim!! She does it when she highlights my hair.
Molly Ravizza says
How do you like the Dyson hair dryer? Debating if I should get it!
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t think I use it to its full potential.
Andi says
Highly recommend Daily Keratin to put in your hair after you shower! My hairdresser gave me this to try about 5 years ago and I’ve been using it ever since. https://tinyurl.com/dailykeratin
Patty Anderson says
I have short, naturally wavy and very thick hair. (I have to have it thinned every few weeks.) I have to use products daily or it’s just flat after sleeping on it. So that means I have to wash it daily, too, to get the products out from the day before. How do y’all use products but not wash it daily? Don’t they just keep building up in your hair?
Mix and Match Mama says
I guess the only products I’m really using is hair spray and one of the reasons I like this particular one is that it brushes out at night before bed. The oil and heat protectant seem more hydrating to me and not anything additional.
Melissa says
T3 dryer and curling iron are sold at Costco. I think I need to try these! Your hair is beautiful.
Mix and Match Mama says
Awe! Thank you!!!
Kara says
Do you wash your hair after every workout? I always feel like I have to!! ?
Mix and Match Mama says
I do not! I just can’t seem to time that.
Virginia says
I love how soft the Revlon dryer makes my hair but I’m not sure how to best use it. Do you just use it just to seal the cuticle or do you style with it like when a round brush is used for a blowout? I can never get my hair to look as good as it does when I get it blown out! Any tips and techniques are greatly appreciated.
Mix and Match Mama says
I never get mine to look like a blow out either!! I think I need like 3 more arms for that 😉 . I would say I use it to smooth/tame and then give it a little lift around my face and crown.
Sara says
Hi Shay, thank you for a great post. What is the name of your heat protectant? The link does not open here in Canada! Thanks.
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s from Olaplex!
Montana Hyde says
OMG, Shay, you have to try the Dyson air-wrap curler! It is pricey but i’m telling you it’s so worth it. Changed my life — so easy to use and quick. If you like the Dyson blowdryer you NEED the curler.
Mix and Match Mama says
Looking it up NOW!!! Thank you!!
Meg says
I love the Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3, the Its a ten spray before blow drying and I sleep on a silk pillowcase to help prevent breakage 🙂
Julie says
What is your natural hair texture if you let it air dry? Mine is naturally wavy and frizzy, so I’ve never let it dry overnight because I’m afraid I won’t be able to tame it enough to curl or straighten in the morning.
Mix and Match Mama says
I would say mine is naturally wavy/flat, but I make it work. Hahahaha!
Gina says
When I open the shampoo and conditioner link many different products open up. Is the shampoo Pureology, Matrix or Paul Mitchell Tea Tree?
Thanks
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s so weird! I buy it at my salon, but I updated the link to show you on Amazon!
Gracie says
Hi I saw your post awhile back when you decided to switch preschools. We are in the process of applying for preschool for our daughter who will be 18 months when school starts. I’m having a hard time decided between 3 day and 5 day. It’s only for 2 hours but I still don’t know which is better. Which would you have done ? or which did you do? Also what are something you looked for in preschools when deciding on one? Any tips for questions to ask? Thanks Gracie
Mix and Match Mama says
Awe! Well, I think it’s so different for every child. My kiddos only went two days a week when they were really little, but that was just what worked out best for them and for me. Their programs were five hours though and not two. I don’t know which one you should do??? There are so many factors, but if you pick one and it doesn’t feel right, I think it’s totally okay to call an audible and change (which is what we did last year). Mama hearts always seem to know.
Nicole says
I’ve said it a million times, I love the blow dryer. I don’t know what I did without it.
But mainly I am posting because I can’t believe how much you look like your momma!
I get that from family and friends about my mom and I also and I love it. Who wouldn’t want to look like their beautiful mom, right?
Carol W says
Thank you for doing this post. So helpful and I’ve been totally admiring your beautiful hair in your posts lately. Love it!!!!!!
