If you’re new around here, on the last Wednesday of every month, Sheaffer and I host this little linky party where we share what’s going on with us right now. It’s a little food, a little family, a little what we’re wearing, a little what we’re doing, a little what we’re watching and a little bit of everything else all in one post.
Here we go…Happy Wednesday to YOU!
1: WHAT WE’RE EATING THIS WEEK:
If you missed my spring inspired Meal Planning Monday this week, you can see that HERE. That Oreo Peanut Butter Ice Box Pie is legit, friends!
Also, I am going to the grocery store tomorrow or Friday because we have been craving these…
…so, I’m going to make them this week too! My Lobster Rolls are really easy, friends!
One more recipe for your week, this one right here…
…my Sausage & Cornbread Breakfast Casserole is not only easy, but it’s easily tweaked to be gluten-free!
2. WHAT I’M REMINISCING ABOUT:
All of those April and May weekends where we watched all the sports and then spent all of that time on our town square. I know it will be back and that I should find the good in the now, but gosh, I miss those weekends. As the weather warms up, I think about them more and more.
3: WHAT I’M LOVING:
This combo here…
…I saw this comb on my friend Katey’s Stories, so I bought them right now during the Sephora sale. I love them! They’re a neutral but instead of being beige, they’re a little pink. The lipstick is HERE and the gloss is HERE. Both are called “Annie”.
4: WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO:
…we’ve been crafting! My friend Karianne goes to my church (and is an amazing author!) and she and her twin daughters wrote this book of crafts for girls! The best part? We already have so many of the supplies at home! On Sunday, Kensington made something where all she really needed was tape and an old barrette…easy as that! I also love that this book is easy enough that for most crafts, Kensington can do them completely by herself without any assistance. What perfect timing, right?!
5: WHAT I’M DREADING:
Nosebleeds.
Okay, I know we’ve talked about this before, but it’s been several years.
HELP US!
Ashby has always suffered from severe nosebleeds ALMOST DAILY!! This has nothing to do with her Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome, it’s a separate issue altogether. We’ve been to the ENT more times than I could count, and she’s even had her nose cauterized seven times, but they still persist every day. They happen a lot while she’s sleeping too so it disrupts her sleep and causes quite the mess the next morning for us to clean up. AND to add insult to injury, she has to take two new iron vitamins to help with the low iron the nosebleeds are causing and she hates them. ANY HELP, TIPS OR IDEAS would be appreciated here!!!
6: WHAT I’M WORKING ON:
All the vacations 🙂 .
Our travel agency is busy over here rescheduling, rebooking and gearing up for later this year and 2021. I get excited with each phone call because people are so happy to be talking about traveling again. It blesses my heart each and every time.
7: WHAT I’M EXCITED ABOUT:
MAY!!!!
Friends, you all know that I LOVE MAY!
Well, this year, I want it to be bigger, better and HAPPIER over here than ever before! Get excited for May in my little corner of the world! This year, it’s going to be the best yet!
8: WHAT I’M WATCHING/READING:
Well, I’m still working my way through Hart of Dixie (adorable!!) and contemplating a fourth dog just so I can name her Lemon (how cute would a yellow labradoodle be named Lemon?!)…but then Andrew and I started watching…
…Waco together over the weekend. This is a series based on the events that happened at David Koresh’s compound back in the early ’90s. As a Texan, this was a HUGE deal for us that I remember vividly even today. The series, so far, is really good, but I did spend the entire first episode trying to imagine that the actor playing Koresh was the actor who…
…stole my heart in Friday Night Lights 😉 .
Also, my April Book Review is TOMORROW! Make sure you come on back for that!!
9: WHAT I’M LISTENING TO:
Right this very second…
…Smith is talking to Yankee. These two are in LOVE!
10: WHAT I’M WEARING:
Speaking of right this second, I am wearing…
…this because it’s Monday morning, and that’s what I’m wearing! The joggers are sold out (boo), but as soon as they’re back in stock, I’ll let you know. My top is ON MAJOR SALE RIGHT NOW , so I went ahead and bought two more! They run TTS, and I bought an xsmall. I’m having a big moment with J Crew these days…
V-NECK SLEEVELESS//V-NECK SHORT SLEEVE//HAWAIIAN TEE//TIERED TOP
…all of their tops are super cute, easy to wear and go with both shorts and my joggers. I bought all of them in xsmall except for the v-neck tee where I sized up to a small (which by the way comes in a gazillion colors and is also on major sale!). You can also find my shorts HERE. I really am wearing them just about every day (when I’m not wearing my joggers!) because they’re so comfy!
11: WHAT I’M DOING THIS WEEKEND:
The weather is supposed to be warm and sunny, so I imagine we’ll be doing this…
…does that picture not look like “the weekend” or what?!
12: WHAT I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT MONTH:
FOR THE LOVE, I HOPE JUNE IS NORMAL!!!!!
13: WHAT ELSE IS NEW:
On Instagram this week, I’m giving away a Kindle Paperwhite to one lucky winner! To enter to win, all you have to do is like and comment on all of my pics this week. Easy as that!
Okay gang, I’m out! If you blogged WUW too, make sure you link up below. I hope you all have a great Hump Day! xo
Holley Cavaliere says
Hey Shay! The link party says it’s not open for 7 hours…. 🙂 lol!
Mix and Match Mama says
I am so sorry! I went in and changed the code!! I think it’s fixed now!!
Holley Cavaliere says
It’s all good! I just wanted to let you know! 🙂 I love these link-ups! Thank you so much for doing them! I’m so sorry to hear about Ashby’s nose bleeds that is so difficult for you and her. Poor thing. She is really an amazing little human!
-Holley @beesimplyorganized.com
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you so much, Holley!!!
Christine says
Has Ashby had her platelets checked? Low platelets cause nose bleeds. My son has ITP ( lie platelets), he takes meds.
Patty says
Oh my goodness, I haven’t heard anyone mention ITP since my now 31-year-old daughter had it when she was about 3. Thankfully, she outgrew it fairly quickly. I’m sorry your son has it, Christine, but I’m glad there’s now medication for it. Hopefully he’ll outgrow it, too. And Shay, our now 27-year-old used to get horrible nosebleeds as a child, too, and still does from time to time. She’s exceptionally tiny (4’11”) and we were told it’s because she has tiny capillaries in her nose like Asian’s do. I’d never heard that before. Does Madely get them too? Our daughter gets them every time she’s in a pool, so I guess maybe be thankful Ashby is able to swim without them? I hope you’re able to figure things out soon. It doesn’t sound like much fun for any of you.
Alex says
Hi Shay,
As a chronic nosebleeder myself I have a few tips that have really worked for me over the years. I’ve noticed I get them more often when the weather is especially hot or cold because of heat/air conditioning in the house.
1. The single best thing that has helped me is running a humidifier close to my bed at night so my nose doesn’t get dried out and “crack” leading to nosebleeds.
2. When I’m getting nosebleeds often I normally apply Vaseline into my nose a few times a day especially at night. Doctors don’t generally recommend this as a long term solution but normally if I can get it under control with this then after a few days I am able to apply Ayr nasal gel more as a maintenance solution and when my nose acts up and I’m getting nosebleeds every day or multiple times a day I switch back to Vaseline.
Such a bummer (and constantly doing laundry is such a pain!) so I hope these tips help your little one!
Elisabeth says
Hi – It says the link party won’t open for 7 hours…
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m so sorry about that! I went in and changed the code. I think it’s working now!!
Heidi Kapsalis says
Poor baby! My 9 year old gets them pretty frequently-when it’s super dry! So def try a humidifier? Also, I put a dab of Neosporin on a q-tip and kind of rub it around in his nose before bed. We also use a nasal spray to keep it clean and damp in there. Hope this helps!
Taylor says
Yes I’m so excited for May too! I had so many fun things scheduled that got cancelled but I’m still determined to make it the best month ever. I can’t wait for all the fun on the blog!
Mimi says
I’m sorry to hear about Ashby’s nosebleeds. My husband (and his mom and sister) all get daily nosebleeds. They have a genetic disorder with a name that is too long for me to write out, but which is abbreviated as HHT. My husband has figured out how to minimize the nosebleed frequency and handle them when they come, all based on guidance from his doctors and HHT message boards. Cauterization is actually not usually recommended for people with HHT. Even if Ashby doesn’t have HHT, maybe HHT best practices can give you some tips for dealing with them that would be helpful?
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you so much, Mimi!!
Emily says
Have your tried a humidifier for Ashby while she sleeps?
Also, Tim Riggins so misunderstood ?
Mix and Match Mama says
That last line made me LOL, Emily!
Kara says
Oh, sweet Ashby.. I’m sure the ENT recommended saline nasal spray, but if not.. they make an easy “aerosol” like saline spray for kids (little critters brand I believe but tons of different brands out there!) and use it twice/day regardless of nose bleeds and it might help! (Won’t interact with any other meds!) ? another tip-use In the bath/shower for less mess ?
Kim says
Do you run a humidifier in her room at night? That could help. Also, saline mist spray is better than the regular spray. And if you could get her used to a nasal rinse/irrigation before bed that’s the best of all.
Sheaffer Sims says
Precious Ashby. I sure do hope you get some good tips from readers to help your girl.
Christina says
My little one also suffers from nosebleeds….per advice from our ENT, we do a saline mist 2x/day, a saline gel inside her nose 2x/day (I use Ayr Saline Gel) and allergy medicine (her nosebleeds are always worse in allergy season). Our ENT also recommended Afrin spray inside her nose when it’s actively bleeding – apparently it helps stop the bleeding quickly by constricting the blood vessels. It’s hard to spray the Afrin in her nose – it’s more of a squirt than a mist – so sometimes I’ll put a few drops on a q tip and gently swab her nose that way. It works pretty well to stop the bleeding. Good luck!

That pic of Madeley SCREAMS SUMMMMMMER!!!
Ahna @ Hammers N Hugs says
WooHoo KariAnne! Getting to hang out with her in Waco this June! I got that book for my daughter too, and we love it! Poor Ashby! That is so frustrating! I cannot imagine I would be telling you things you have not already been told, but I tell my patients in the ER to always have a humidifier beside their bed at night. EVERY NIGHT.
Use a flashlight on your phone to see the steam and make sure it is blowing out directly over her head so that the air she breathes in and out all night is moist. I personally recommend Pure Guardian (https://amzn.to/3cZtmIQ) because of the timer, the angled nozzle, silver clean technology, water capacity etc, but I’m sure there are other larger capacity ones as well. Use gallons of distilled water only to maintain the life of the humidifier and the purity of the humidified air. Set it up on a stool or a chair if her bed is high. It needs to be very close. Also no overhead fans or it will pull the steam away from her. We use one in every bedroom all winter long for croupy coughs, colds etc. She should use a saline spray in her nose daily. Unpleasant and tough for her age, but she sounds like a little trooper and would probably get the hang of it! No nose picking. Avoid all decongestant sprays and avoid seasonal allergy meds as these will dry her out. Sinus rinses preferred.
Again, I can’t imagine you haven’t heard those things, but if putting my ER hat on for a minute helped at all I would be happy. Poor sweet girl. That would be so frustrating!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you so much!!!!!
Molly Kissel says
Waco. Ugh. We finished it a few nights ago. I was 11 when it happened and kind of knew the gist of it, but I guess I didn’t really know how it all went down in the end. Episode is is TOUGH!
Brooke says
nosebleeds…sigh. My 9.5 yr old gets them frequently and they are a mess. This isn’t “oh, it’s because it’s the winter and the air is dry”. I follow Dr. Ben Lynch and he mentioned that frequent nosebleeds can be due to a histamine intolerance or overload. It can be due to a “dirty DAO” gene (you may want to read his book Dirty Genes). We try to limit high histamine foods but this is difficult as she is already gf/df. I have bought several supplements that I think are helping her: Seeking Health Histamine Block (she can’t yet swallow pills so I cut this and sprinkle on food), Seeking Health ProBiota Histaminx (a probiotic) but we just started this. I also have been giving her Seeking Health’s Active B-12 with L-5-MTHF lozenges (cut into 1/4s–about two pieces a day) to help with her methylation. This is what I’m trying and I hate it but we are desperate to stop these nosebleeds. It’s been about 2 weeks since we’ve had one, so I’m going to keep this up. Not sure at all if this is Ashby’s issue but just thought I’d share.
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you so much!!!!! I appreciate it, Brooke!
Laurie says
Best advice for nosebleeds…My Dad can have the worst nosebleeds…is there a humidifier in her room?? As long as he’s been using his, no nosebleeds!!
His has got so bad that in the emergency room, they have had to stick “tampon” like things up his nose & has had to wear that for several days straight with a string coming out of his nose!!!
Enjoy your blog!! Keep it up!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you, Laurie! There is one in her room…but maybe I need to move it/get a larger one/etc. Thank you!!
Julia McLean says
My teenager has nosebleeds bad this time of year, flonase has really helped.
Deena says
Be really careful with that because I feel Flonase set off nosebleeds for me, possibly thinning the lining of my nose. I have friends with the same issue.
I’m going to try some of the tips here. Good luck with Ashby’s nosebleeds, Shay! I feel for her (and you).
Dana Nelson says
My son is 11 and has suffered from severe nosebleeds since he was about 3. The ENT said the blood vessels in his nose are really close to the surface. We have to get his nose cauterized at least once a year or so. One thing that has really helped, especially for those night bleeds, is this saline spray that our ENT recommended. He just keeps it on his nightstand, and puts it in every night before bed.

Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Beth Swindig says
For Ashby’s nose bleeds..have you tried giving her Vitamin K, using Saline nose spray, a humidifier, and also cotton balls with Vaseline. I come from a family of nose bleeders so these are all things that we have done. My brother even had to go to the ER for one when we were out of the country.
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you so much for so many tips!!
Amanda says
My mom and I both suffered from nose bleeds for years until we found Ponaris. You can get it on Amazon and it is magic!
Mix and Match Mama says
Ordering it right now!!
Brenda says
I used to always have low iron when I tried to donate blood. The lady suggested flinstones plus iron. She said it would upset my stomach or make me constipated. She was right. I have taken them for at least 10 years and no longer have an issue.

Thank you so much!!!!

Don’t watch the last episode of Waco! We finished it last night and I was up all night crying and with nightmares ?
Mix and Match Mama says
I haven’t seen the last episode yet, but I know what happens. Some things are too awful to comprehend. Thank you for the warning. xx
Bailey says
Stop whatever you’re doing and watch Outerbanks on Netflix. SO good.
Mix and Match Mama says
Why have I not even heard of this?! Looking it up!!
Lori Whittington says
Yes this is a great show!!
Anna says
#12..did you mean to say May instead because next month is May not June. As for the nose bleeds, have you tried a humidifier in her room or putting Vaseline/Aquaphor in her nostril to help keep them moist as well as nasal saline? I’m 28 and have had nosebleeds all my life but it basically stopped and then all of a sudden last month, I started getting them every day to this day and some days it’s several times a day and seems like it switches between nostrils too and now my method of humidifier and Aquaphor doesn’t work so the ENT is my next option
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh no, I’m skipping May and hoping for June to be back to normal 😉 .
Monica says
Hi Shay!
Are you finding any GF bread and rolls that you love? Like?
We absolutely are over the moon with Glutino’s English Muffins – we use them for sandwiches, burgers, everything! You need to toast them a little longer but they taste like REALY bread!
Cheers! And thank you for your recommendations! Always fun!
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t believe that’s a brand we’ve tried! Thank you so much for the rec!!!
Angie N says
These are delicious with turkey, cheese and a little bit of jelly instead of mayo. So good!
Michelle says
I know you use essential oils. Use Cypress on her inner arm daily and it will help.
My 10 year old had the same issue.
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you so much!!!!!
Lydia says
Hi Shay! I get nosebleeds in the fall/winter/early spring months (I live in Wisconsin, so this is the majority of the year) due to the dry air. I put some Vaseline on a q-tip then put up my nose and rub all around on each inside. I also sleep with a humidifier. Hope you can find some solutions for Ashby! Have a great day!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you so much, Lydia!!
Jana Domyslawski says
I am sorry sweet Ashby is having so many nosebleeds….she is an amazing warrior! My son gets nosebleeds frequently and we try and coat the inside of his nose with Vaseline to keep it from becoming dry and cracked and bleeding. We use a q-tip to apply it twice a day. I hope this idea may bring her some relief!
Amy says
Hi Shay, both of my girls get frequent and super heavy bloody noses too. We’ve had them cauterized and it works for a bit but eventually comes back. Our ENT said to put Johnson and Johnson baby gel just inside their nose right after and every morning if they are having them reoccurring.
Also to get them to stop quicker we use something called BleedCease. It helps to
Get the heavier ones to stop a lot quicker. I find them at cvs or amazon. Best of luck, it’s not fun!
Jaime says
My 18 year old niece has been getting nose bleeds daily for the last 2 years. We have been told it’s because she is on blood thinners. She had a blood clot 2 years ago and that’s when her nose bleeds started. I’m sure you have already checked this with her doctor but is one of her medications causing it?
Heather Stanton says
I see all the recommendations and did them all for my daughter. She had bad nosebleeds for years. One MD suggested a thin layer of Aquaphor in each nostril 2x a day for a month. It made sense that it kept the nostril moisturized all the time….even away from a humidifier durning the day. Saline moisturizes for a bit….it not long enough. Aquaphor worked like a charm!
Lisa says
My four year old gets frequent nosebleeds too especially at night. It looks like a murder scene in the morning bc he wipes it all over the walls ?. Some things that help: nasal sprays, humidifiers constantly, and taking Vaseline with a cotton swab and putting it in the nostril.
Sarah says
I felt the same way about Taylor Kitsch-
Many times during the show it bothered me but at the same time I also thought- “Why yes, I could be a polygamist and have your babies” ?
Tina says
For Ashby’s nosebleeds, have you considered allergy testing? I had chronic nosebleeds and ear infections until I got on allergy shots. Haven’t had either in years. I had Spring and Fall allergens identified, but I was surprised to be allergic to dogs even though I’ve been around them for years.
Mary says
Poor Ashby! I’ll say a prayer for her. Are you doing Everyday in May this year?
Mix and Match Mama says
I have something else planned! Maybe that too, but for sure something else!
Kristen Grell says
My son gets frequent nosebleeds. Nothing like what Ashby gets. That sounds intense. However, we have found that Lavendar essential oil over the bridge of his nose stops it quickly. Maybe also try putting it over her nose and down the sides before bed at night. Just be careful to not get too close to her eyes. My son says it burns when it does.
Katherine Darlington says
I use a humidifier or vaporizer at night. Sometimes I put the vics vapo steam in it during allergy seasons. It helps with nosebleeds.
I have to take iron & was told to take it with a cup of orange juice because citrus helps the iron be absorbed.
That little girl has a lot going on for any age, but especially so young but the fact she was put in your home with your family shows she sure has favor from God. She’s going to be quite the young woman one day with all that she weathers. Her character is strong & gets stronger with ever obstacle that comes her way. What a special little girl. My friend Kevin has had KTS on 1 side of his face since birth & his face is disfigured but he’s a successful cardiologist with a beautiful family and he’s a beautiful human being who’s really good at being a good human being.
Melissa says
I second the Outerbanks recommendation! It has been my favorite show of quarantine by far 🙂
My husband and I were thinking about watching Waco. Will it ruin my image of Taylor Kitsch? I’ll forever love him as Tim Riggins.
Seriously cannot wait to travel!!!
Sarah says
Can I ask you (or Andrew) your routine for keeping your pool clean? We do not winterize ours as our winters don’t often get too cold. I am asking because we just had our third Polaris break! The wheels break off..not sure if it’s the shape of our pool or what. One you might think on that’s a fluke but three! Just wondering if you had a different type of vacuum system/schedule.
Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
Andrew needs to come answer this one. I look out the window every single morning and he’s cleaning/sweeping/maintaining it, so I’m sure that helps plus we have a pool service company come once a week to do the chemicals.
Sarah says
Thanks!

So sorry to hear about Ashby! I am currently 20 weeks pregnant and have been suffering from massive nose bleeds everyday! ENT cant pin point a cause either… Fun fun! You may have already tried this, but Ayr GEL Saline nasal spray has been my absolute life saver! The gel and aloe coats the nasal passages and may help yall at least get her through the night! Good luck; hope yall have a great rest of the week!
Mix and Match Mama says
I’ve only had two nosebleeds in my life…both when pregnant!
Darcy says
My middle daughter used to battle the nose bleeds mainly during certain times of the year. Her ENT recommended Afrin nasal spray, not just the saline. Something about it helps with the inflamation of the blood vessels. She would do it twice a day.
Jaime says
Hi shay I wanted to share with you an idea for an activity to do with your kids. One of our favorite things we have done over quarantine is a cupcake wars. We took whatever box cake mixes we had and let the kids each make a cupcake whatever flavor/decorations they wanted and then my husband picked the winner. My kids loved this. I hope you guys try it.
Mix and Match Mama says
I love this idea, Jaime!!!
Chelsea says
I haven’t seen Waco yet but I’ve heard it’s really good!!
Poor Ashby and her nosebleeds. Those are never fun! We suffer from year round allergies in our household and they’re the worst. Maybe the humidifier will help??
I’m excited you’re so busy with vacation planning for everyone–that gives me hope of maybe the return to some normalcy soon? ha! A girl can dream, right?!
Nicole says
For your sheet meal with the sausage what temp do you put the oven at? Going to do this tonight for dinner.
Mix and Match Mama says
I like it somewhere around 400ish! Maybe a bit higher.
Jen says
Skip the nasal spray – the force of the liquid being shot up the nose actually irritated my son’s nose even more! Our doctor said to use the saline gel…it is called Ayr and you just rub it on the inside of the nose. Then crank the humidifier! The price on Amazon is CRAZY…I think it was around $6 or $7 at our local drugstore (CVS). Good luck!

We watched Waco last weekend and I too have vivid memories of following that story as it happened. But watching the show I kept thinking, “Wait, Tim Riggins is David Koresh?!” Texas, Forever!

Andrew has asked me to stop saying it throughout each episode 😉 . I can’t get over it!
Kirsten Juenke says
Ahh sweet Ashby, I’m so sorry to hear this! One of my few memories from my 5yo self was a sleep over at a friends house and I was hit with a mega nose bleed. Ugh. So many nightmares, even into adulthood. Cauterizing helped me, luckily….but a bigger humidifier might help. And scarily enough….I used to put Neosporin on a Qtip all the tip time, but my dr told me that these days they don’t like you to do that. Seems that nasal passage is too close to the brain and the mucus membrane is really good at absorbing anything you put up there. That kinda scared me. How many years did I do that!?!?! I hope some of the tips you’re getting help her. Big hugs to Ashby!
Mix and Match Mama says
They are helping!!! Sending big hugs back!!
Terry says
My kids are grown now, but several of them had nosebleed issues. One daughter still does. Thin nasal membranes with the blood vessels closer to the surface bleed easily when they get dried out. It’s a heredity issue from my husband’s side. My nieces and nephews have the same problem. Definitely use a humidifier. But we had great success using vitamin E oil on a q-tip every night before bed. It moisturizes as well as heals the skin. And I’m sure you know to pinch the bridge of the nose and put ice on the back of the neck to stop the bad ones. No looking up because that just causes the blood to run down the throat.
You’re so blessed to have a backyard pool! Here in central Illinois, not a lot of people have them. And they’re talking about keeping all of the pools closed this summer!! With potentially no sports and. O swimming, my 8 grand kiddos here will be miserable,?

I just finished Waco and my heart was broken for days after. I’m sure there’s more to the story from the ATF’s point of view, but that series opened my eyes to so much and broke my heart into pieces in that final episode. I feel like I need to join a Waco series support group to discuss all the feelings and thoughts!
Erica S. says
I really think you are so smart about things I hate to even put something here. I have a friend with a child who has vomiting issues. They put a towel down at night and layer sheets. So when he vomits they remove the towel and the sheets and there are already clean sheets underneath. They then lay down a new towel on the clean sheets. This saves them a lot of time of actually changing sheets. Perhaps this will help you as well?
Allena says
My husband and I started Waco last night (fellow Texan here), and I was shocked to see Taylor Kitsch! They used my hometown (just north of Austin) for all the outside shots in Friday Night Lights, used my high school’s outside, and based the uniforms on my school, used footage from our games (so funny to see a lot of the coaches that I knew since my dad was a coach) – it was such a trip to watch the show!
Jennifer Goodwin says
Waco sounds good, but I don’t know if I could get past “Tim Riggins” as David Koresh. Also, I don’t know if I want to relive the horror that it was. I do remember it vividly, though, and just the other day my mom and I were talking about how cool it is that Chip and Jo Gaines pretty much came in and revitalized Waco. If ever there were a city that needed it, it is Waco! I know it must have been even more horrifying for you as a Texan. I’ll keep binging Friday Night Lights for now. 😉 Thanks for hosting the linkup!
Ranisa Brletich says
Nose bleeds are awful. I had them all the time as a child. Earlier this year my three year old had a couple every day. I asked on a holistic Facebook I joined they all said it is a sign of dehydration. Well he had a 24 hour bug and I assume he was dehydrated. We got a “boogie mist”. Basically a saline mist you can shoot up their nose. Pinning a three year only down to shoot something up his nose was not fun. But it was easier to do than actually shoving a qtips covered in vaseline and coating all side-which is what helped me as a child. Pick your poison. We also do the humidifier. I love what others have had to say. I would look into the allergy and other things oh yes -up the vitamin k. For my son I think he was really actually dehydrated because they went away after about a week. Oh yeah my grandma gets them at night a lot. Or st least she used to until she started the Vaseline qtip before bed. If she forgets she will actually get her walker and go and do it. Oh I had my nose cauterized as a young adult. This is about to get a little gross-imagine a huge scab in your nose. Your nose moves every time to you take a breath moving the scab-or just really irritating it. Then it itches. It blocks your nose passage to an extent-so you want it out. It is super uncomfortable. I was irritated. How did She handle it?
Katie says
Not sure that you’ll see this comment, but just yesterday, a friend who’s with Young Living posted to her stories about an EO called Helichrysum that she uses to stop nosebleeds (swipes over bridge of nose) and other bleeding. I struggle with nosebleeds as do my kids, so I’m planning to order some to try it out. I’ve never found any good solutions (I’d have hour-long hemorrhaging nosebleeds when I was pregnant event the doctors couldn’t stop). Hoping this works!

Please don’t purchase another animal from a breeder. You advocate so well for human adoption. Would love to see you do the same for feline and canine. There are so many shelter animals out there waiting for a home.

I am sure you have already completed this, but she most definitely needs to see her PCP for genetic testing for multiple clotting disorders. Or the PCP may have a hematologist they work with/recommend. I would not normally jump right to a specialist but you have seen ENT multiple times, and iron deficiency due to blood loss (especially with nose bleeds) is significant. I think all the conservative measures you have employed are great, and would keep doing them, but ultimately they are not enough to correct the issue.
I thoroughly enjoy your blog. Have never commented, but you have a beautiful family and live life to the fullest as God intended us to do, by following his teaching/guidance.

Keep a key or something metal in your freezer. When she gets a nosebleed put the cold key on the back of her neck and it immediately stops the nosebleed. Works every time. Hope this helps.

Oh, poor Ashby! Nosebleeds are scary and disgusting! My son, who was born in 1972, yes, almost 48 years ago! also had daily nosebleeds when he was about Ashby’s age. Our family GP, who had been practicing for YEARS in our small town, recommended giving him Jello every day. Didn’t take long to greatly reduce the nosebleeds. I know…sounds like an old wives tale but it’s worth a try!
Joan says
Have you tried swabbing Vaseline on her nostril openings before bed? It doesn’t have to be much. I have found this to be helpful for me.

Loving your bright tees! Also super jealous of the pool activity since you guys are already into the warm weather. Checking out the lobster rolls recipe!! I miss New England so much right now.

My daughter was getting daily nosebleeds as well! Our pediatrician recommended saline spray (morning and night) and aquaphor on a q-tip inside her nose before she went to bed. It worked for us! I see from the comments it worked for a lot of other people, too. Hopefully you can figure something out! That is no fun for anyone.

When our son was younger and had to swallow bigger pills, we put them in applesauce. Pudding would work as well. It just helps them to swallow something like a larger pill.

Let’s be honest Shay….we all know that 4th dog is coming soon 😉 And, Lemon is a perfect name! I have another show for you to binge on Netflex-Schitt’s Creek. So good and so funny! Also, I’m so happy that a quality Canadian show has finally come out! LOL

Hey Shay! My 13 year old has had nosebleeds her whole life- mostly in the middle of the night or on top of a mountain ready to ski down? After doing some research we have been using a tip that has really seemed to help. We put fractionated coconut oil on the end of a qtip and gently wipe the inside of each nostril with it. Don’t know if that will help Ashby, but I hope she finds relief soon! They can really be a disruption to life? Happy Wednesday!

We watched Waco over the weekend. It was really good and sad. The last episode is very upsetting. I cried and my husband kept saying how sad all of this was. I was in high school when this happened. Such a different perspective as an adult and parent.

My 12 year old son has dealt with nosebleeds his whole life. For about 8 years we would gently put a little aquaphor on the inside of his nose with a q tip. Right on the inside wall. Worked wonderfully for a very long time. This last summer they got worse. He plays select basketball all year round and the contact was causing him to leave games all the time with nosebleeds. We finally saw an ENT back in the fall and he said he had a complex pattern of vessels and needs cauterization, but it was so vast it would need to be done under anesthesia to get all of it. We did that back in September and he hasn’t had a nosebleed since! It’s amazing!! His were often in the middle of the night as well. Looked like a horror movie sometimes! May be worth looking into or trying the aquaphor with a q-tip (an ENT told us to do that ). Good luck!

Poor Ashby! Have you tried running a humidifier every night while she’s asleep? We did that with my daughter who had constant nose bleeds and it seemed to help immensely with the frequency of them.
Jana says
My son had really bad nosebleeds around your daughters age really messy at night especially. My pediatrician who was the best ever, told me to try Bacitracin ointment under his nose and at the tip opening of the nostrils. He told me that was not was it was for but for some reason he found that it worked. Between that & a humidifier the nosebleeds stopped and he grew out of them. You can find it over the counter now. It definitely helped him. Be safe!

Haha I also watched Waco thinking man, Tim Riggins sure took a turn after high school.
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh my gosh, that’s so funny!!
Stacy Meek says
What they did to my Tim Riggins in this show is criminal. I didn’t even believe it was him when my husband told me. I had to google it. 🙂

I just LOL!!

My son was having frequent nose bleeds, the best thing that finally has pretty much stopped them is coconut oil on a qtip and swab the inside of the nose and a humidifier at night while he sleeps! Good luck, they are such a pain.

Funny about naming a new dog after Lemon – we actually named our dog Cricket after that show!

My daughter also has horrible nosebleeds. We swab her nose with a Q-tip dipped in an essential oil salve 2x a day. She sleeps with a humidifier in her room (sometimes we add EO’s to this). This is so easy, and it has made such a HUGE difference. Seriously, she used to soak a beach towel regularly. When she does get a bleed, we use Afrin to stop it quickly (tip from an ER nurse friend). We love the salves from this site.

First, I’m so sorry about Ashby’s nosebleeds. I wish I had advice, but glad others can give you suggestions. Second, have you ever seen Broadchurch? It’s excellent! It’s on Netflix.
Amanda Jennings says
Shay, please mention to Ashby’s doctor to have her tested for VWD (vonWillebrand’s Disease). It is a very common bleeding disorder, but many doctors don’t remember to test for it unless asked specifically. It is a simple blood test. I work for a non profit in Alabama to advocate and educate people with bleeding disorders within our state. If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them.
Thanks for sharing some bright and cheery in the darker times. I always look forward to reading your blog every day!

Thank you, Amanda!! I will!!!

I know you have a lot of nosebleed comments already. My 3 year old son deals with them constantly and the ENT told us he will until puberty because my husband did. Apparently it’s highly genetic for boys (who knew?!) Anyway, we do AYR gel daily on a Q tip up his nose. When they’re really bad, we do it multiple times a day, but especially before naps and bed. It wakes him at night when they happen and one night he slept on our floor and it looked like something died on the floor in the morning. Made me thankful for my good carpet cleaner!
I’m also hoping for more normalcy in June, especially since Baby #4 is due. It’s been a weird time to work in healthcare and be pregnant.

I use a vegetarian iron (VegLife Vegetarian Iron). I find it’s less harsh than traditional iron supplements. And the one I use, the tablets are really small and easy to swallow.
Emily Maybin says
NeilMed NasoGel for Dry Noses. WORKS WONDERS! It’s a nose spray of gelled saline and gets to parts you can’t get to with a q-tip. It helps my 11 year old so much.
Erika D. says
I use liquid iron from Nature’s Way and put it in OJ (vitamin C helps with iron absorption).

Have to agree, a humidifier and saline mist have helped tremendously in our home.. if you are liking Hart of Dixie, you need to watch Virgin River on Netflix, kind of the same premise of city girl relocated to small town, but a drama rather than a comedy.
Mix and Match Mama says
I loved Virgin River!!! Yes, yes, YES!! And thank you for the tips too!

My mom and sister swear by putting Vaseline in their noses every night. My son does the same and uses saline spray, which I think sounds horrible but he says it makes everything better 🙂
Jaime Scott says
My 10 year old son had really bad nosebleeds for years. We tried most of these suggestions with no real change until we took him off dairy. I believe it was causing inflammation in his nose/sinuses. Also we realized glycerin (an ingredient in some foods and meds) cause nosebleeds for him. ??♀️
Kate says
Shay- I don’t have advice on the nose bleed but I do have advise on the iron. Liquid iron or a multi with iron and 1/2 cup of OJ at night after dinner works well with no complaints for my 2 & 4 year old. I know iron can feeling yucky sometimes but this seems to work well!
Joanne says
I am so sorry to hear about her nosebleeds but I completely understand how she feels about having to take two iron supplements a day.
Lauren says
I had nosebleeds as a child and an adult, and one day, I realized I couldn’t smell and went to the ENT. Turns out I had a deviated septum and had surgery to repair it. Afterward, I haven’t had a nosebleed since. I would hope Ashby’s ENT would notice any deviation in her septum, but things can be overlooked. Just something to ask about, as I know how embarrassing and messy nosebleeds can be!
Christal says
I would look into a referral to hematology to rule out any bleeding disorders.
PS I’ve been following your blog for years now and I’m a big fan. ?
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you so much, Christal!! xo

Nosebleeds take a lot of time and the nighttime ones are upsetting for our child. We used saline nasal spray twice a day. A little while later we used a cutip type of swab, lightly coated with aquaphor and thinly lined the lower part of each nostril. We also used a humidifier here and there. For us, the thinly coated aquaphor is what helped the most. I hope you find a combination that works for you.

I don’t have any nose bleeding tips, but hydrogen peroxide is a miracle worker when removing blood stains.

Aww Ashby! My husband has been treated for nosebleeds and what’s worked is a simple tip from the doctor: put Vaseline in his nostrils!
Char says
Has Ashby been checked for von willebrands disease? Mild cases can included nosebleeds.
That being said – bleed stop from CVS helps a lot!
Lindsay says
Hello!!! My son (8) has two bleeding disorders, Hemophilia and Von Willebrands disease We deal with frequent nosebleeds. I don’t have any additional “treatment” recommendations but I do have a suggestion for stopping the bleeding! We use a swimmers nose clamp. As soon as it starts we put it on and he can go about his business with the clamp on. Trying to have him sit and pinch was so hard. Me trying to pinch his nose was hard. So this was a great alternative!

My 3 year old was on an iron supplement & didn’t mind Nature’s Plus high potency chewable iron. I ordered them on Amazon.

Check her pillow. We had a friend whose son had them and they changed his pillow to a natural chemical free pillow and they stopped.

Two of my five children suffer from nosebleeds. Daily awful almost make me pass out nosebleeds. What we have found to be very helpful is a nose gel moisture product that a doctor prescribed and it’s easy to use, you just apply it to the inside of the nostrils. It relieves dryness inside the nose which seems to be the main reason we have kids with nosebleeds. So keeping a humidifier running in each ones room
Is a must. We also have a whole house humidifier. Our kids suffer the majority of nosebleeds in the fall and winter and they seem to almost stop during spring and summer. Good luck at your house.
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you so much, Faith!!!!

Our ENT recommended an Afrin-soaked cotton ball in the nose when a nose bleed starts. We used to spray the Afrin, but this works much better. My daughter was diagnosed with Von Willebrand Disease a few years ago (where blood doesn’t clot as it should). She was sent for blood tests a few years ago after having a major nosebleed. Maybe something to look into?
