Apple Watch Series 6


Happy Tuesday, friends!

Today, I’m sharing my APPLE WATCH SERIES 6 REVIEW!  I would typically have my watch a bit longer before sharing a review but with the holidays approaching, I thought I should share it today in case this is a gift on your list or you’re thinking about gifting it to someone else.

Brace yourselves, this review is pretty short, sweet and to the point but first, let’s work backwards…

I just traded in my APPLE WATCH SERIES 5 about three weeks ago.  I had it a little over a year and if you read my review last year, you know, I didn’t love it  The watch on the left is my Apple Watch 4…

Apple Watch 4 Review

…which I reviewed it HERE.  I had it one year (after having the 1, the 2 and the 3).  I bought my first Apple Watch in 2016 and loved it.  I am the least techy person you’ll ever meet, but it was so user-friendly that it quickly became one of my favorite things.  The only thing not perfect about the Apple Watch 1 was that it wasn’t water proof.

And then…

…Apple came out with the Apple Watch 2 which WAS WATERPROOF and my world was once more rocked, so I upgraded to that one.  It was amazing.  It did everything my first one did, but I could swim with it on, take a shower with it on, wash dishes, bathe kids…do everything with it on and my love of the Apple Watch just grew and grew.  And then…

Apple Watch 3 Review

…Apple came out with the Apple Watch 3 that could have cellular functions without your phone nearby.  What?  I could leave my phone at home and drive to my kids’ school and still make/receive calls and texts?  I could go on a run or bike ride and leave behind the phone, but still have access to calling/texting if I needed to? What?  Amazing! I upgraded again to the Series 4 which pretty much functioned the same as the 3, but the face was larger and thinner…I liked that.  Bigger screen but with less bulk?  Yes, please! I upgraded.  And then for the last year, I had the Apple Watch 5 which, naturally, I thought I’d love, but I didn’t.  You can read the review HERE.

My biggest beef with the Apple Watch 5 was that my battery died every day.  On my other watches, I could go a full day (if not a day and a half) before it died, but with my 5, it died every day around 6:30 or 7:00 at night.  (And really, is there anything more pointless than a dead watch on your wrist?!  I think not.)  I took it into the Apple store and was told that a short battery life was a common complaint for the 5 and that I wasn’t alone.  Needless to say, I have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Series 6 and even pre-ordered it (a first for me!) this fall.

Now, the big new feature of the Apple Watch 5 is that the screen never turns off.  With all of the other watches, when your wrist isn’t up and you are looking at it, the screen is black.  So, for instance, when I’m holding planks, I can’t see my timer because my wrist is down, so all I see is black, but with the 5 (and now 6), the screen is ALWAYS on.  I ended up turning this feature off early on with my Series 5 in order to save my battery (so cool new feature, but I couldn’t use it).

So…now that we’re all caught up…let me tell you about my Series 6…I love it 🙂 .

Yay!!!!

My Series 6 looks and acts almost identical to my Series 5 BUT I can keep the face lit up all day long and not only does it not die, by the end of the day, I’m still typically around 40% of my battery life.  WOOHOO!!!!  I am sure there are a million other little differences but honestly, the fact that it “stays alive” all day is really all I care about.  This new watch does monitor my blood oxygen level during the day and has other advanced medical technology.  You can read all about it HERE on their website.  You can also add an ESC app, monitor sleep…there are so many new advances in health technology with the 6.  On Apple’s site there are videos and demonstrations too.

Because I haven’t had my watch a very long time, I don’t know all the ends and outs just yet, but I do know this…I love it more than my Series 5 and am so happy with the upgrade!

Here are some bits of info regarding me and my watch:

1: I have always bought the largest size available (which has changed throughout the years).  Right now, the largest size is 44 mm, so that’s what I bought.
2: I have always bought the “gold” option, but you’ll notice, in 5 out of the 6 watches, “gold” looks very “rose gold”.  I don’t know why that is…but I’ve always bought “gold” and it’s almost always a pinky-gold.
3: I’ve always bought the “aluminum case with sports band” option.  There have always been a variety of options, but this one (which is the most basic) is the one I’ve always purchased.
4: Up until this fall, I’ve always used the basic Apple watch bands…their “sports” bands.  Whenever I wear my yellow one, I get lots of questions and compliments.  That particular band is probably about 3 years old but they do have a different yellow color online right now.
5: Washing bands are easy!  Many days, I just shower in my watch and it gets clean (since my Series in waterproof) or I take a Clorox wipe and just wipe it down.  When I’m not wearing a band (over the years, I’ve collected so many!), I keep them all in one baggie in my office.
6: I wear my watch all day, every day.  I almost always put it on around 4:10 in the morning and then don’t take it off until 10:00 at night.
7: This band here is my first non-Apple band and I LOVE it…

 

I bought this band in September and when I’m not actively working out, I have it on.  Online, it doesn’t say that it fits the 5 or 6 but it fit both my 5 and my 6.  It comes in multiple colors.  I didn’t realize how much I would love a “leather” band until I bought one!

Whew!

In a nutshell, I love my Series 6 and much prefer it to my Series 5.  If you want to compare the different Series that are being sold right now, Apple has a place on their site for that.  If you have other specific questions, please leave it in the comment section, and I’ll do my best to answer.

Two more things before I go…

Andrew and I are both taking the day off of work tomorrow to decorate our house for Christmas 🙂 .  I will therefore, not be “here” tomorrow but you can catch me again on Thursday!  What does 2020 need right now?  CHRISTMAS LIGHTS AND CHRISTMAS CHEER!  I. Am. So. Pumped.

    I upgraded to a Series 6 when it first came out and I love it! I also got the largest screen this time (I didn’t on my other watch) and stayed with the gold frame too. I do love that the battery life lasts much longer! That was something the Apple store workers told me was a new feature.

      It’s not. I like to control how loose/tight my watch is, so that made me nervous.

      I have the one loop band and I really like it! It has you measure your wrist before you order, so you are able to choose your size based on your measurements. I bought one for myself and for my daughter and both of ours fit perfectly. I actually really enjoy just being able to slip it on and not have to fool with a buckle.

    I traded in my Apple 5 watch for the 6 on Saturday, and my husband purchased his first Apple watch! We both got the cellular capability and we couldn’t be happier. Love not having to carry my phone around any longer. I’m not sure why I didn’t purchase previous watches with cellular capability. I had an Apple 3 first, based upon your recommendation. 🙂 I’m just as technology-challenged as you say you are, but this watch could not be more user friendly. My husband loves that he has access to phone and text no matter where he is, and doesn’t have to have a 2nd phone (work only) in his pocket or clipped to his belt when in the office.

    I pre-ordered and got the 6 too!!! I still had the series 2 so lots of new features for me… I’m loving it so far but HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU GET THE WEATHER/TEMP ON YOUR WATCH FACE?! Lol… I have tried EVERYTHING!

      Go to your PHONE and change it on your WATCH APP! It’s the “modular” face and then you can change all of the options (there are up to 6 on that face).

          I bought it on Apple’s site about three years ago. It’s slightly different than the yellow one they sell today.

    Shay, thanks for your review of the 6, I have a 5 and found the same issue with the battery life. One other issue I have is the exercise app doesn’t always track my time well. I’ll walk briskly for 50 minutes and it will track 22 or I’ll take a slow walk with my dog and it will count all the time! You mentioned you noticed the calorie count was off on your 5, have you had the same issue on the 6?

      I think my 6 is more accurate. I’ve noticed a bump on all of my workouts back to where they were calculating when I had my 4.

    I got my first watch in quarantine (as a treat to myself) and got a 4 based on your recommendation and LOVE it. I got the 44 mm face too and am so thankful to have your reviews to read. I had to get a new phone and couldn’t get it to pair to my watch and had to reset my watch – I was SO sad to lose all my activity history – all my challenges and awards erased, that was my favorite thing!

    Hey Shay!

    I know you’re a big fan of LV (like myself). I was able to get an authentic LV watch band made from a retired purse. It fits my 6 perfectly. 🙂

    I had mine custom made by someone in California, but I’m sure any leather worker would be able to make one (or if you don’t mind paying for shipping, California has lots of people who can do this!).

    Do you change your band to a sports band each morning for your workout then back to the leather one? I find changing the band annoying.

    I have a stainless watch series 4 – I was wondering what your (or others) experiences have been with the hardiness of the Ion-X glass on the aluminum versions? I was wondering how well it holds up for day-to-day life. I’m pretty rough on watches. Thanks for any feedback from the group!

      I’ve personally never had any problems with mine. They’ve never even scratched and I’m hard on mine too.

    I got my first Apple Watch last month. (Never bought one before because my husband purchased a LeVian timepiece for an anniversary gift and I felt guilty about not wearing it.) But with all of the tech capabilities- I had to try it. Sooooo glad I did! LOVE LOVE LOVE! And I cannot thank you enough for your review posts! I read them before I purchased because at the time the Series 5 was discounted. But after learning about the battery issues you had – I got the 6. So THANK YOU!!!

    Now let’s talk apps – do you have any specific apps you recommend for the watch?
