Happy Tuesday, friends!
My family arrived here on Sunday, and it’s been nothing but FUN since they’ve arrived on island. We have another big day ahead of us, so I’m going to share this post and then head off with my peeps.
If you haven’t seen my previous posts, first, I shared OUR FAMILY ROOM and then I shared OUR KITCHEN on Nantucket and today, I’m sharing OUR “BUNK” ROOM.
In McKinney, our kiddos each have their own bedrooms and bathrooms, but on Nantucket, they all share one room 🙂 .
We have a three bedroom home here, but decided to make one room our primary bedroom, one room a guest bedroom and one room a bunk room of sorts.
Here’s what we did…
…see the opening at the top? We decided to add on a bit more up there and close it up. What used to be an open loft area became a great space to park the kids.
Here is a before pic…
…they had carpet (we pulled that and added wood floors) and two beds up there. We removed everything…
,,,they got to work on extending and walling off that opening…
You can see clearly here what is newly added and where the original flooring line is as well. They came in and built in four beds and…
This is what we have now….
…we have twin sized bunks and…
…two other twin beds. Our contractor had these beds all custom built to fit the space. Under the bunks and one of the other beds, we have drawers (these pics were taken before the hardware was put on the drawers) and then under the other bed, we have a trundle bed to allow us one extra bed in the house.
We also added a ceiling fan as well.
The kids each brought their own things from home to give their bunks a “them” feel, so now, after we moved four kiddos in, the space looks more like…
How sweet is Mades’ bed with all of her books and art supplies?! Plus, her blanket from McKinney. (And because, of course, one of the handles was broken on the back, so we’re getting it replaced.)
Next you have teen boy’s bed with his weighted blanket. His cubby is behind his pillows there. The three big kids have cubbies with electrical outlets to charge their AirPods/phones/etc.
No one has a TV in their bedroom at home, so we decided to be fun and let them have one here. They have to agree on what to watch (always a lively topic), but it’s been so sweet to walk by at night and see them all in their bunks watching a show (99% of the time, I feel like it’s The Office).
Excuse the blinds on the floor, but we decided to pull their old blinds down (we tried to keep the original ones, but they’re pretty terrible) and the new ones are about to arrive (an Amazon find, so I’ll keep you posted!).
Ashby’s bunk is on the bottom (so cute and tidy!), while oldest teen has constructed some elaborate setup with twinkle lights, faux-vines and a “curtain” system.
I just ran into Pete yesterday out and about in town and told him how much I love all of my new pieces…but this one here is probably my very fave!
So, that’s the bunk room 🙂 .
I walked by the other day and snapped this pic because this is really how the space is used…
,,,kids, dogs, coloring and coziness.
Here are some sources for you today…

Alrighty, I’m off to spend time with my sweet family!
I’ll see you back here tomorrow 🙂 . xx
Erika Slaughter says
It looks like THE PERFECT use of that space! And I can only imagine how excited they were about a tv in their room!
Elspeth Mizner says
Wow! I can’t imagine having everyone in one room. How are they all getting along? I love the colors and the bunk beds!

Other than arguing over what to watch, it’s working out well!
Katrina says
Love the last picture! Have fun with your family today!!
Laura says
What a great transformation! Does Kensington have enough room in her bunk, it looks like the smallest spot? What are the metal looking things on the walls? I love your vision for different spaces. It’s special to know that sweet memories will be made with them all together!!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
She does (it goes back a bit further than I think it looks. They each picked their own bunks, but let’s be real, the bigs picked first and bossed the other two around. Hahaha! Those are little reading lights by the beds 🙂 .
Nicole Meyer says
Cute! Also, I was so relieved to hear last week that you all got library cards. Libraries are such a critical resource in our society — truly one of the last few places where you can simply exist and enjoy without the expectation of spending money. So many people rely on libraries for the resources they provide, and having as many area residents as possible signed up for library cards is how the public library is able to leverage their membership to apply for and receive more funding! Everyone reading this: please go and get a library card if you don’t already have one!!
Kim Taylor says
I couldn’t agree more! And you can even borrow ebooks for your kindle if you wish. Magazines…..books…..the library is such a wonderful space. When my girls were little, we went to the library for story time and to borrow books every week.
Margaret says
It looks great
Laura says
Brilliant!
Sarah Shaneyfelt says
I love this! Your contractor did such a great job utilizing the space!

Love seeing every inch of your space!!!
Kristin M says
What a great space. How nice for them to all be together.
What are the gold rectangle things near each bed?
Mix and Match Mama says
Those are little reading lights 🙂 .
jennifer lynn sickle says
Love everything!! Have you thought of using Beddy’s bedding? They help littles make their bunk bed!
Angela Wilke says
SUCH a cute space! Can you link the rug?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! I should have done that! Just did!
angela wilke says
THANK YOU!
Kacey says
This came out so great! What a cozy space and so fun! Reminds me of camp =)
Brooke says
It looks so great! Did everyone agree on who got which bunk? I was guessing in my head who would be in which one. The only one I got right was Ashby.
Mix and Match Mama says
We let them all select and for different reasons they picked different ones. I honestly think Ashby has the best one with the extra little ledge space. Kensington would say she does because it’s more private. The big kids made very convincing arguments to their little sisters about which ones they should select 😉 .
Mal says
You crammed 4 kids in 1 room so you could have a guest room that’s usually going to sit empty? Kensington’s bunk is so tiny too. How on earth are your kids ok with this?
Mix and Match Mama says
I mean, they each have private bedrooms AND bathrooms in McKinney. Do we really feel sorry for them? I don’t think we do. Also, my grandparents are in that room right now, so I wouldn’t exactly call that empty 😉 .
Denise says
Shay you are the epitome of grace. To suggest your children are somehow suffering because of having a shared room is absurd . I’m sure when they are all grown up some of their favorite memories of Nantucket will be from sharing that room. The bunk room is fabulous. Love the updates!
Alexis says
Great response. 🙂 I think it’s really cool and extra fun that your kids have a shared room for the time you’re there! Reminds me of camp! Plus, the tv is a fun summer bonus!
Also, I love the fact that you intentionally built-in cubbies! Great use of space and great idea!
Maureen Werner says
Shay, I think it is wonderful that your four children are sharing a fun bunk room at your vacation home!! They will remember these times forever!! My children all share their rooms in our regular home and as they get older and move out they all reminisce fondly about all the togetherness!!🤗❤️. Love that you are sharing all the Nantucket pictures!! Can’t wait to see all your adventures there!
Erin says
It’s a gorgeous vacation home on Nantucket, I think the kids are just fine 😂
Mix and Match Mama says
Amen! 😉
Mother Henn says
Our family rented a vacation home in Florida last year with one bunk room for our younger girls and another separate bedroom for our 18 year-old daughter. Guess what?! Our 18 year-old didn’t sleep in her room a single night and that bed became the suitcase space. Instead, she chose one of the bunks and hanging out with her sisters and our dogs for the week…all piled into that bunk room, and if I could count the giggles and resolved spats they worked out on their own as currency, I’d be a rich mama. When we travel and stay in hotels, our entire family is in one room and that’s part of the memory making. To be honest, I crave the close proximity and family time much more than the space. I love your layout and think it’s perfect!
Lisa N says
I knew you’d have a great reply but I could also imagine the kids replying don’t worry about us, we are living a dream lol
And geez it’s not like they haven’t all “bunked” together in your room almost every Friday night for years…. in a sprawling house! I agree with the others, they are making memories they will talk about with their own kids❤️
Kim says
I want that bunk room. It’s amazing. They are very lucky kids! Great memories and a wonderful childhood. Enjoy every minute this summer!
Kimberly E Kilduff says
he is the nicest guy! He literally tracked us down one year to give us his purple dog shampoo
Kathy says
Can you send the link for the flooring?
Mix and Match Mama says
We added real pine to this room, stripped it an white washed it!
Natalie L says
I love it!! It’s my fave!!
Alysa says
I love seeing all of your Nantucket posts ☺️ very curious how your kids chose which bed was theirs!
I hope you’re having a great visit with your family.
Mix and Match Mama says
They all picked…I think two were highly influenced by the older two though.
Anna says
So. Stinking. Cute. How did you choose who got which bunk??
Mix and Match Mama says
They all picked!
Brooke Retherford says
Something about that last pic really got me! Happy to see kids being kids and not with an ipad stuck to their face! I love how you guys manage to keep them doing kid things!
Paula R. says
Shay,
This bunk room Is so awesome! I love the built ins. Well done making good use to maximize the space.
What are those small gold things next to each bed? Are they little lights?
So how did the process go with each child deciding which bed they wanted? Was it an easy process or did they have to draw straws😊
I can’t remember if you said that you had 3 bedrooms plus an an additional dedicated office space or do you and Andrew work in the common spaces or patio area?
One last question… did you guys put a step stool next to the washer and dryer set up? I noticed those buttons on the top machine were Andrew height, ha! I would have to use a step stool to start the machine. It’s so fun that your family is visiting. I bet you are all having a blast!
Mix and Match Mama says
They are little reading lights 🙂 . The process was pretty easy, the big kids eyed the spots they wanted and convinced the littles why their beds were “perfect”. #sigh And this washer and dryer is actually “normal” (unlike our upstairs washer and dryer in McKinney). Even little old me can reach it all!
Faith Kapp says
What a cute space! I laugh at the “oldest teen’s” set up. I have 3 girls now 18, 20, 22 and that would have been sooooo them!!
Molly says
Are those reading lights by the beds? Link?
Mix and Match Mama says
They are! Aren’t they cute?
andrea in mn says
Very cool! Thank you for sharing with us and have a great time with your family!
Michelle Wile says
Your Nantucket home is so beautiful, Shay!! Thank you for sharing your life through your blog. I look forward to reading your posts and getting inspiration!
Brittany says
This is precious!! What sweet memories your children are going to have from their time together in that room!
Lori Whittington says
Love the use of this space! And it looks like your teenagers don’t make their beds either. Same at our house 🤦🏻♀️🤪🤣
Alexandra says
LOVE this new space, per usual. Everything you pick is amazing! Next time you have a hankering to change something, I think you should look in to adding a pull down trundle under the TV, Disney villa-style! I love that your kids are sharing one room, core memories are for sure being made! Happy summer, Shull fam!!
Alison says
I feel like this is a great way to encourage your kids to learn how to share personal space with others (e.g. college dorm room 😂). I love that they’re getting along so well on this summer adventure! You are creating lifelong memories, for sure.
Ali says
Love that we are seeing this space! How fun! I bet your kids are loving it for the summer. They will make special memories here – the summers where they all shared a bedroom!
One question, where do they put their clothes?
Mix and Match Mama says
The drawers, the closet in their room and then, we have a closet and drawers in the guest room too.
Hope says
That is such a fun room! Bunking is such a summer vacation vibe and the tv is the cherry on top!
Sara says
So cute! Any bed looks like a good spot to me! I wonder if each time you stay they will stay put in the same beds.
Do the drawers fit everyone’s clothes? How did you decide how many clothes/shoes to bring?
Mix and Match Mama says
We have drawers for everyone plus, the kids use the closet in their room plus…in the guest room, they use the closet and a set of drawers. We’re making it work.
Thoa Nguyen says
Aww such a cute and cozy space and I like that you teach them to share the space so they can learn to compromise and strategize how to manage space but with siblings around! I am curious to know where the rest of your family who’s visiting is staying if only 3 bedrooms and grandma is staying in the guest room? 💓
Karen says
It’s SO cute! They were all very creative with their stuff! Is Smith going to move to the guest bedroom once he’s a little older and needs privacy from 3 girls???
Mix and Match Mama says
I have no idea!
Beck says
Love everything you’ve done! You really do have a talent for design.
I think the link for the fan is linking to yours vs the one in the bunk room? Can you take a look? Thank you!
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s the same fan, just different blades!
Danielle says
Love this Shay! My brothers and I all had our own rooms growing up but often would sleep all in one room just because we loved being together – those are the best memories now, I think you’re kids will feel the same!
Michele says
So, is there a bathroom connected to that room, that all four of them share also?
Mix and Match Mama says
We have two bathrooms here (and an outdoor shower), so we all get to share 😉 .
Leticia says
This is awesome! I have a brother and sister close in age, and growing up one of the fun things we loved was sharing a room on vacation! Of course there would be squabbles but for the most part all was resolved by bed time and we would talk until we fell asleep.
Amie says
I love that they are all sharing a room together!! These are special times together they will never forget.
Jen says
I love this! Such a special time for them and different from what they are used to! Very cool space.
shawnna griffin says
hey girl- Ooh I just love that bunkroom!! Oh so cool! Coziness is right- So happy y’all are having fun up there!
Heather says
Is your whole family staying with you right now too or did they get hotels in Nantucket?
Mix and Match Mama says
My grandparents are staying with us and then my dad rented a house not far from ours for the rest of the family.
Ramona Puckett says
The bunk room looks so spacious! I love the colors and everything, y’all did a great job!
Jeanie says
How many square feet is the house? It’s deceiving from the outside. The bunk room is cute. I certainly got the bunk assignments wrong. I figured the teeny tiny one was for your teeny tiny Madely.
Is this a two bedroom cottage? I do love the prints from the Nantucket artist. Very cute!
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s 1700 square feet (three bedroom, two bath).
Amanda says
I’m curious how you will shift things as Smith in particular gets older! Love this for now! Not sure it will always be so grand being a teen boy sleeping with your 3 sisters.
Mix and Match Mama says
I have no idea! We’re playing things one season at a time. Right now, he’s hardly here but to sleep, so it seems to work well.
Shelly says
Really nice, Shay! I’m curious if sometimes one of the kiddos choose to sleep in the guest room when it’s vacant or do they all always sleep in their bunks?
Mix and Match Mama says
They could always sleep there if they wanted to, but so far, no one has. There’s not a TV in there, so…
Michele R says
I love bunk rooms! A bunch of my friends and myself rented a cabin in Broken Bow and we each had our own room but the bunk room we all fought over. 6 grown 50 something year olds all wanting to stay in the bunk room together and we did. Staying up late and talking into the night felt just like camp. Memories will be made all staying in that gorgeous bunk room!
Lindsay D. says
That looks like such a cool space and what a great way to make life long memories! Thanks for sharing this with all of us!
Jill Martin says
Love the Kids room! They will have such great memories of this time/ space together. I totally agree with your logic of this shared space, especially since they each have their own space including bathroom at home. How fun!
Kristin says
Shay- I absolutely love reading your Nantucket updates! And seeing your family get this sweet quality time 💙please keep it coming! Y’all did a beautiful job on your house – seems so cozy and perfect. I love how the kids are sharing – they will have so many special memories from this
Lyndsey says
Suuuuuuch a fun/cute/cozy space! Perfect for ACK! Pete’s artwork is just the BEST. I have so many ideas of where to put some pieces once we are settled back in Texas. That one of yours might also be MY fave!
Carol W says
This looks amazing. SOO fun!! My aunt has a home on Lake Michigan and we stayed in a room there with our four kids in one room in bunks and my husband and I in a queen bed. 7 nights, we were tired at the end but it was soo fun and such sweet memories!!
Stephanie Paul says
This room is big enough to hang ceiling tracks with indoor curtains or light doors as dividers so when the kids (especially Smith) want privacy. Like making a few mini-rooms in one large room.
Mix and Match Mama says
If Smith needs that much privacy, he should go back to McKinney 🙂 .
sandi says
I am laughing at some of your responses to rude nosy people. And I love when others chime in too! Such grace, Shay, such grace.
I don’t think I have ever asked for a resource but Kensington’s blanket looks like the V and the orange and blue colors for University Of Virginia (but I’m sure it’s for something else).
The idea of the kids all bunking together is delightful to me. We have one boy (20) and three girls (19,19 and 15) and they would totally be fine in that space. Memories are being made in that room!
