You guys, there is no topic more requested here in blog world than my DAY IN THE LIFE posts!
Over the years, I’ve had so many of you specifically ask for me to blog about our SUNDAYS (as I typically do week days), and so, I did 🙂 .
Why haven’t I blogged about our Sundays in the past? Well because they’re rather dull…but you asked, so I’m sharing. I don’t know about your house, but at our house, Sundays are very routine and kind of boring which I don’t mind as it is sandwiched between fun and busy Saturday and back to work Monday.
Settle in on this Tuesday and enjoy a look at our Sunday…
Good morning! My alarm went off at 5:30, and I hopped out of bed, stepped over one dog and two little girls and made my way through the family room…
…where I spotted another sleeping dog on my way to…
…get coffee.
With coffee in hand, I headed upstairs…
…to settle in with my quiet time. Yankee heard me and came upstairs too to finish up on her sleep.
I clearly can’t quit it with the dog pics.
When I was done with my coffee and quiet time (and I did a little reading too), Yankee and I found Poppy…
…and we headed outside for a minute.
Next up…
…I headed to workout for about 45 minutes.
When I was finished, I went downstairs to get breakfast together and look who I ran into…
…Miss Mades!
I got our breakfast together, and then headed into our room…
…to find the sleepiest dog and…
…wake up Ashby. The two little girls had made pallets in our room and slept there the night before.
Up next, I…
…showered and got ready for church. You can find MY DENIM DRESS HERE and MY WEDGES HERE.
It was your usual chaos after that of getting a family of six up, dressed, fed and out the door on a Sunday morning. I don’t know that there has ever been a Sunday morning when the lyrics to the Commodores’ song didn’t play in my head, and I didn’t want to ask Lionel Richie if he ever got his family ready for church.
Two out of four agreed to a Sunday morning photo…the other two looked very cute too…you will just have to trust me.
All six Shulls loaded into the car and off to grab…
…Starbucks on their way to church.
We pulled up at our church…
…parked and headed inside. Do you see my husband sprinting waaaaaaaay up there ahead of his family? In the heat, it’s “every man for themselves” according to Andrew Shull. He runs from air conditioning to air conditioning while I bring up the rear. If you look closely, you can spot Teen One and Teen Two who are sprinting even faster than Dad.
Our family goes to our life group (a.k.a. Sunday School) the first hour and then the second hour…
…Andrew and I serve in the guest relations/welcome center in between services until it’s time for…
…us to head into worship.
Our friends Greg and Janna lead worship at our church and they’re phenomenal!
And then the amazing John Mark Caton preaches. If you want to watch one of our services, you can catch them HERE!
Years ago, we decided that eating lunch out on Sundays is always better than arriving home at 1:00 tired, hungry, cranky, wearing “church clothes” and then having to make lunch, so we’ll either grab something quick to eat or…
…bring something quick home with us. On this day, we grabbed lunch from Hat Creek Burger Company which is one of our faves because they have SO MANY gluten-free options including fries, tots, burgers, chicken nuggets, even grilled cheese sandwiches.
I got a grilled chicken bowl which included lettuce, grilled chicken, pickles, sautéed onions, avocado and then I added their famous “Hat Sauce” on top. I also had tots 🙂 .
These two cuties post lunch 🙂 .
After we ate and cleaned up…
…the big kids both did all of their chores (laundry, cleaned up their room, finished their homework, got their stuff together for the following school day) while I played a speech therapy game with Ashby and Mades…
…and then, they played more GraviTrax while…
…Andrew and I made the bed. I always make the bed first thing in the morning, but on this day, I had decided to wash our duvet cover and well, putting a duvet back inside a duvet cover is really a two man job, so I had to wait until after church for his assistance as we shoved that sucker back inside so that I could properly make the bed.
After that…
…I headed up to my office to do about an hour of work, make sure my calendar and Cozi app were all in line for the week and basically “get my life together” before the work week.
After that, I had time and wanted to make another batch of cookies I had been working on…but I had run out of ingredients, so I did the thing I always tell you guys not to do…
…and hopped in the VERY hot car and drove to…
…the grocery store on a Sunday afternoon. Sigh.
I grabbed my ingredients and some new fall magazines (woohoo!)…
…and got to work with Madeley on cookies (recipe to come!)…
All three big kids were off with friends, so it was just the two of us in the kitchen (and Andrew who came in there to sample the warm cookies).
After cookie baking, I went upstairs and watched the final episode of PainKiller with Andrew. He watched the entire series, and I only watched the end. You guys, it’s really powerful (at least that last episode was).
After the show…
…I got to work on CHEESY RANCH TACOS for dinner because, of course.
Andrew was working on the guacamole, all the kids came back home and dinner was seved.
After dinner, we cleaned up…
…I love a clean kitchen.
Then after her shower…
…I went upstairs with Mades to help her hang her laundry. Do you guys see my little shadow?
I’m never alone. There is always a pup…
…or two nearby 🙂 .
At 8:30, these two headed to bed! They slept together in Ashby’s room on this night.
I said goodnight to my bigs, took my own shower and climbed into my bed…
…where I read (and listened to Frasier).
I snapped this pic as I was reading. We turned off the TV and went to sleep at 10:00.
And that, my friends, is a Sunday in the life. xx
Carolyn says
What a nice Sunday! Do Ashby and Madeley still share a closet even though Madeley has her own room now?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! Right now, they share so many clothes/pjs/swimsuits/etc that we all found it easier to let them share.
Alison says
Love it! Looks just right and very consistent with our Sundays. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Elspeth says
I love a good day in the life post! Especially on a weekend! Thanks for sharing!

Elizabeth Feldpausch says
I had been refreshing my browser over and over and the post finally uploaded! Happy you aren’t in a ditch somewhere #AnxietyThoughts 🤪
Mix and Match Mama says
Well, I’m happy too! Hahaha!
Angela says
Can you share that speech therapy game!? We need new ways to practice our “S” and “R” over here 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh gosh, it was one the speech therapist gave us last week. She always sends us home with games to play during the week between sessions.
Samantha says
We used the Articulation pro app for lots of reps with s and r. The matching game was of particular interest. 🙂 Even though this is an app, this is something we did together.
Kim says
Are your worship leaders Greg and Janna Long, formerly of Avalon? If so, what a treat that must be each week!
Mix and Match Mama says
They are!! They’re AMAZING in every way!
Amy says
While I was reading this post the only thing I kept picturing in my head was Andrew falling through the chair during church! I still laugh when I think about it…sorry Andrew! Thank you for the post and have a good week!
Mix and Match Mama says
Do not feel bad…we still laugh about it too! Bahahaha!
K.K. says
Me too!! I thought the SAME THING!! Oh, poor Andrew!!!
Kim M says
Shay, can you share how Andrew fell through the chair?
Mix and Match Mama says
The chair was apparently broken before he sat in it. He was just the unlucky guy to sit down. (They’re the movie theater style chairs that flip up when you’re not sitting.)
Leslie S says
It’s amazing how small the world is sometimes! Janna grew up in Florence SC and my aunt Edith, still lives in Florence, is good friends with her mama. I grew up going to see Avalon with my aunt anytime they were performing close. My aunt went with Janna to the Dove Awards one year. Sweet sweet Jesus loving people!! ❤️
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwww! They are AMAZING! Andrew and I have loved getting to know them (and their girls) this year.
Kelly Kirkland says
That grilled chicken bowl looked amazing. And, I couldn’t help but giggle thinking of Andrew’s incident at church with his chair when I saw a picture of the chairs in church! 🙂
Melanie M says
About 3 years ago, your pastor did the funeral of a good friend of mine. I was highly impressed with him and wished that I lived closer to McKinney. I also think one of my other friends attends your church. She is a Sign Language Interpreter. Her name is Carisa Parrish.
Mix and Match Mama says
Well what a small world! I wish you lived closer too 🙂 .
Bailey says
Oh! I must have missed it. When did y’all move from First to Cottonwood? And what do you like about it?
I’m an out-of-towner who often goes to Dallas for work, so always looking for a great DFW church.
Mix and Match Mama says
You should watch a service online! We love everything about it!
Pixie says
You have a beautiful family and home! I sY my prayers 🙏 and I thank God for everything I have! He has blessed us with awesome family that includes 10 grandkids, 3 of whom are great grandkids:) Thank you for sharing and have a blessed week 😀
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you, Pixie! You have a blessed week!
Hallie says
what is your workout typically on Sundays?
Mix and Match Mama says
I typically like to run on a Sunday…but I lifted weights on this day instead because it’s just icky outside.
Lin says
Did y’all change churches? I know y’all were really connected at your other church in McKinney!
Mix and Match Mama says
We did in 2021!
WhittyWife (Lindsay) says
Your church seems so similar to ours, and I serve on a similar team as you on Sundays. I, however, do not get as much done as you before church! 😅 Hahaha. You’re an inspiration. My goal is to be better about that this Fall!
Paige says
Thanks for always being a bright, happy spot!! Love reading your blog!!
Do you happen to have a link to the speech therapy game??
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank YOU for stopping by! Unfortunately, I do not. The speech therapist always gives us games to play with during the week, and this was one of her games.
Melanie M says
I am mistaken. It was the pastor from FBC McKinney.
Alison says
In the heat, it’s every man for themselves. 😂😂 Andrew’s motto is spot on. My kids know I have zero time for snails in the summer. Move it or get left behind. Lol
Thanks for sharing your Sunday with us!
Christina says
What time do you go to church. I always feel so rushed Sunday mornings before church
Mix and Match Mama says
It starts at 9:30. There is never enough time. If church started at 2:00 PM, I’d still feel rushed. Why is that?!
Martha says
Ok, two things: the Lionel Ritchie comment made me LOL, when does that easy part kick in..? The other comment about Andrew walking way ahead – yes! What is with that? My husband would always be out of the van, door closed, headed for destination while I stayed behind to make sure everyone was out, had their stuff, didn’t stray, didn’t get run over, etc. Anytime I would get out first and just bee-line it without waiting for anyone they all assumed I was mad! :-).
Mix and Match Mama says
Lionel’s wife was not singing that song while she got their kids out the door on a Sunday morning… 😉
Sara says
Every Sunday after church we go to my parent’s house for spaghetti. We’ve been sauce on Sundays for generations. Is there a particular day of the week you see your parents?
Is it too personal to ask why your family switched churches? It looks wonderful, and huge!
Mix and Match Mama says
It is wonderful and much larger! We’re really happy here!
Cathy Maureen Boulanger says
Did all, most, some or none of your friends move churches with you? (I know churches are VERY personal and even besties might attend different churches. )
Mix and Match Mama says
I would say that there was a mass exodus from the last church…my bestie attends Cottonwood Creek as well!
Kristin B says
Where did you get your coffee mug? I love that thumb rest!
Mix and Match Mama says
Anthro!
Susie Triplett says
I love a day in the life post! I love the pictures of your family and I always love the pics of your pups and any details about them!! Thank you for being a blessing to so many!
Andrea says
Speaking of good burgers, have you found something y’all actually like for when you cook them at home? Most of them I’ve tried taste like cardboard so I usually just skip the bun, but I always feel like I’m missing out!
Mix and Match Mama says
Trader Joe’s gluten-free buns are our go-to!
Kim says
Shay! I think all that Nantucket air really revved up your sense of humor, I still haven’t recovered from “street meat” yesterday and that Commodores comment was hilarious! Laughter is good for the soul!! Thank you 😊
Mix and Match Mama says
I think it’s the heat that’s revved up my attitude 😉 . Thank you! xx
Kelly Bonner says
Small world….I grew up near Houston (where I still live today) & Greg toured with our pastors daughter & some others. He was also on staff at a church near our house. We love a productive Sunday at our house too. Plus we always try to go to bed early on Sunday evenings, to prepare for the week.
Mix and Match Mama says
I love when worlds collide like this! I was at lunch yesterday celebrating one of my team member’s birthdays and Greg was at the table right next to us. I just love him!
Sheaffer says
Church was so good on Sunday! Loved the music, loved the message!
Kelly says
I agree that the Grilled Chicken bowl looked amazing! It’s my fall resolution to NOT cook for Sunday lunch:). Also, noticing that your teens did all those chores on Sunday afternoon. Do they have to have them done by a certain day or time?
Really enjoyed this peek into your Sunday!!
Mix and Match Mama says
We’re not super strict on when the chores need to be completed (as I know their schedules are busy/changing/we try to stay flexible), but Sunday afternoons is just always a great time for our family to regroup and “get our lives together” before the start of the new week.
Kaytlin Karr says
I saw this duvet cover hack several years ago, and it was life changing!! You & Andrew should try it, although I can even put in a king duvet on my own using this method! https://youtu.be/K-a36PqpUxM?si=wVH1vIt-Y5BpYV82
Mix and Match Mama says
I am so intrigued!! Thank you, thank you!
Sarah says
You said good night to the bigs and then went to your room for bed. Does that mean your bigs went to bed, or do they stay up a bit later than you? I would like to go to bed but my big likes to stay up a bit later than I want to. Just trying to figure out what that looks like for other families too:)
Mix and Match Mama says
My bigs go to bed pretty early as they both have to wake up around 5:00 to get to their schools for athletics. Some days, Kensington in particular, will go to sleep at 8:30, but for the most part, I think they’re both asleep by 9:30ish or so.
