Friends, it’s our FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!
Honestly, this year in particular, we are so ready. After coming home from Nantucket to this extreme heat, we are needing to transition out of “summer” to “the school year” just to make the transition from Nantucket to McKinney easier. We tried to do *summer things* this last weekend at our house, but it was really too hot to swim (it was like warm bath water), too hot to go outdoors, too hot for pretty much everything, so we are ready for the transition to school things. Plus, everyone is SO EXCITED about this school year! Smith and Ashby are pumped to be the oldest at their schools, Kensington is so happy about high school…lots of fun transitions for them. My mama heart is, of course, sad to see them go and hates that they’re all getting older…but they’re excited so that makes me excited.
Since today’s the big day, that means, it’s time for our family’s traditional FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL MENU 🙂 .
Over the years, we’ve created this menu and stick to it pretty faithfully each and every year as we head back to school. Whether you’re looking for a few new ideas for the school year or just want to see what my family will be eating today, I have it all for you right here.
Whether you’re going back as a teacher or sending your kiddos back today (or both!), here’s sending you lots of love!
Happy First Day of School!
Maple Sausage Balls are a MUST at our house!! Once you make these, you’ll want to make them again and again! We make these year around, but they’re especially delicious on the first day of school.

Another savory breakfast option for your family…my Brown Sugar Bacon Wrapped Pigs in a Blanket!!
Years and years ago, my kids requested my green pancakes (which we typically make on St. Paddy’s Day!) for their first day of school breakfast and well, it stuck! We now make these every single year on the first day!
If green pancakes aren’t your thing…
…then you should try my Apple Bacon Pancakes instead! They are AMAZING!!
We always, always have my Butterscotch Maple No Bake Cookies after school on the first day. It’s such a special tradition!!
You can also always make these Flourless Peanut Butter Cookies too or…
...these Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich Cookies!
For dinner, our tradition is lasagna 🙂 . You can make either my delicious g-free version or…
…my Provolone Lasagna. Both are winning first day of school recipes!
Do you have back to school recipe traditions? If so, I want to hear about them!! These foods are always such sweet ways to celebrate a new school year.
Happy first day!! xx

I know you can buy gluten-free Bisquik for the sausage balls but can you point me to your favorite gluten-free pancake recipe?
Mix and Match Mama says
I typically use Trader Joe’s g-free pancake mix or make my own using Namaste GF Flour (I buy it off of Amazon!).
