Over the summer, one of my most requested “will you please blog about ___” topics was my TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE. You people clearly love it when I say controversial things 😉 .
I looked at my running list of topics and today, I landed on my TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE: SMELLS.
Here’s the deal, we’re not talking about public bathrooms, skunks, stinky feet and teenage boys. I think we can all collectively agree that they smell bad. I’m breaking down smells/scents that are “normal” that I either really love and think are underrated or really hate and think are overrated (even though it’s a ‘normal’ smell). Got it?
What’s weird to me is that I’ve now written six of these posts and this one was BY FAR the easiest. I clearly am very tuned in to what scents bother me and which ones I love because it took me no time at all to decide.
Alrighty, here we go, in reverse order here are my TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE SMELLS…
#5 STREET MEAT
I know. You didn’t see that one coming, did you? You guys, I am that person who would buy street meat just because of the smell alone. Who doesn’t love walking down Broadway in NYC and smelling the onions and sautéing sausages wafting from the vendors and their carts? Hello?! I fully expect the entrance to Heaven to carry the same aroma. If it’s cold outside, the street meat smells even better. It’s spicy, it’s smoky, it’s garlicy and mouth watering. I want a sidewalk hot dog just writing this blog post.
#4 DIRT
Yeah, I said it. I love the smell of fresh dirt and soil…bonus if it’s springtime. When I dig into my garden to plant my herbs or maybe I’m pulling weeds, I love the smell of the dirt that comes from the ground. Take me to Fenway Park, and when I get close to the field, I love the smell of that dirt too. It’s earthy, it’s rich, it’s just pure. Now, do I love the smell of mulch? No, that smells terrible, but freshly tilled dirt? That smells amazing.
#3 BIG CITIES
I know this sounds broad, but if you’ve ever been to New York or Rome or London or Beijing, you know what I’m talking about…there is a certain smell that comes from pollution, a big population and cigarette smoke that just smells like VACATION! Ha! It’s so true and I know you know what I mean! Occasionally, we’ll be somewhere random and one of my kids will say “it smells like a big city” and I’m like “actually, it’s just that guy over there smoking on this Ozone Red Day here in North Texas, but YES, it does!”. Big city smell just reminds me of traveling and exploring and I love it. It’s probably a combination of terrible habits humans have and the Earth falling apart, but geez, it smells like a good day to me.
#2 WOOD BURNING FIREPLACES
I’m a really big fan of smoky, woodsy colognes, so if the fragrance you’re selling me at Sephora smells like my fireplace on a cold night, here is my Mastercard. I know it’s maybe “masculine”, but really, who cares? I love when I’m walking my dogs during the winter, and I can smell it from afar coming from one of my neighbor’s chimneys. It just smells cozy. If cozy had a smell, it would be a wood burning fireplace.
#1 THE OCEAN
It’s just the best. That salty, briney, fresh scent just reveals endless possibilities and all of God’s glory. I cannot think of a smell I enjoy more. It’s like fresh rain but even better. The scent means you’re on the edge of the Earth and standing with your toes in a vastness that only God can truly see the depths of. I could sit and just inhale all day long. It’s the perfect mixture of fresh air and underwater magic with a dash of sand and sun. I love it.
So that was my TOP 5, now…here are my BOTTOM 5 SMELLS that people tend to love but I just do not get…
#5 DIVA LAUNDRY DETERGENT
I am about to offend many of you, but guys, I don’t get it. This cult-favorite laundry detergent scent reminds me of my great-grandmother’s house…after she was already in the retirement home, and we were there to collect some of her dust-covered items to take back to her on our next visit. The scent is so powerful that it clings to everyone whether your clothes have been washed in it or not. It’s just not pleasing to my nose at all, and unfortunately for me, it’s very popular here in Texas, so I smell it often.
#4 LEATHER
I don’t understand the scent of leather. People even purchase candles in this scent. Gag. Let’s all be real, leather is dead animal skin, no? I mean, it can be beautiful and supple and heavenly on a say a jacket, but when I walk into a store filled with real leather items, I do not enjoy it. I don’t want to stand in Wilson’s Leather circa 1998 nor do I want to smell your leather scented candle.
#3 POPCORN
Yes, I said it. I don’t get it. Popcorn smells like popcorn which is fine as long as I’m eating popcorn (I guess, but let’s be honest, I don’t really eat popcorn), but I’m not one of those people who walk into a movie theater and buy a bag just because it smells like popcorn. I’m that person that wants the theater to smell like a Sour Patch Kid…not buttery, kind of burnt, corn kernels. When my kids make it at home, I always light a candle and open the back door. Ick. It just smells like buttery ick to me.
#2 ROSES
Hi, my name is Shay, and I love a little bunch of fresh roses on my kitchen counter, but literally anything more than that, and I’m immediately transported to a funeral home and standing over a casket. Nothing has ruined a whole lot of fresh roses more to me than the funeral business. We sometimes visit really nice restaurants and hotels, and upon entry, if they have a lot of roses in the lobby, my nose can sniff it out by the time I hit the front door and I ALWAYS say that it smells like a funeral. WHO WANTS TO SMELL A FUNERAL? Not me. In fact, let it be known that when I die, I do not want you guys sending roses, I want you guys to light a fire outside of the funeral home, throw some fresh soil around and get a street meat vendor, okay? I don’t want the scent of roses in my perfume, my candle, or my laundry detergent either. No thank you. Oh, just thinking about a lot of roses makes me nauseous.
#1 FOOD FROM THE MICROWAVE
This is no lie, and I truly blame my pregnancies, but the smell of any food heated up in the microwave makes me want to vomit. The other day, Smith Shull was microwaving pepperoni pizza, and I came downstairs and told him that once when I was pregnant with him, I smelled that exact smell, went into my bathroom and vomited and then cried on the floor of my closet…and I was thiiiiiiiiis close to doing it again. Pizza smells amazing out of the oven, but out of the microwave? Um, no. Yuck. Gross. Nothing, I repeat NOTHING can ruin pizza for me more than microwaving it. I don’t want to smell your reheated chicken, chili, or tacos either. There is something truly upsetting to my senses when I smell food in the microwave that wasn’t intended for the microwave. It’s truly the worst.
And those, my friends, are my Top Five, Bottom Five SMELLS!
I asked Andrew if he would share his TOP FIVE/BOTTOM FIVE too. I laughed when he texted them to me because you guys…as you’ll see, we’re two peas in a pod. Two freakish peas in a pod 🙂 .

Kelly says
Gain is one of my top 5 favorite smells! So fresh and clean:)
Erin Rivers says
YES! Chicken cooking is the actual WORST!! I LOVE chicken & dumplings but the way that chicken has to be cooked and sit around for hours smelling up my house?? NO ma’am NO sir NO thank you very much. Ugh. Blech.
Natalie says
Yessss! I want a turkey leg right now after reading your number 1!
Christina G. says
OMG- Shay! This post was so entertaining and hilarious! Please do more!😉 I was cracking up so much at 6:30 this morning when I stopped by to read it. The one about the roses, have you seen the hunger games? I’m sure that would just increase your hatred of the rose smell even more! And your comments about heated food in the microwave was hilarious! Do you never use a microwave? I know it’s not good for your health, so I was just curious. I’m definitely in agreement with Andrea on the wet dog smell, that one makes me wanna vomit! Have a great day, and thanks for the good laughs😂
Mix and Match Mama says
I haven’t seen/read Hunger Games? I’m so intrigued now though about how roses play into it! Ha! I rarely ever use the microwave, but my family uses it all the time.
Jen says
You haven’t seen/read the Hunger games?! You have to!
Mix and Match Mama says
Kensington went through a phase two years ago where she was obsessed, but I didn’t want them with her. Andrew and K bonded over the Hunger Games. It didn’t sound very “Hallmark-y” to me. Should I try?? I haven’t watched/read Harry Potter either.
Natalie Lyles says
Yes def watch!
Holly says
Hahaha….I totally agree with Andrew. There are certain restaurants that I won’t go to (even when I love the food) if I am going to smell
Like the food later. 😂😂😂
SS says
First of all let me say I am VERY sensitive to smells. I cannot burn candles for too long it gives me a headache.
Bottom 5
5. All the Canadian wildfire smoke this summer we have had Air quality alerts like all summer long because of it.
4. People burning thing other than wood/yard stuff.
3. Seafood. I cant’t stand the smell of seafood cooking or being eaten. This is partly the reason I don’t eat it. (When I had COVID and lost sense of smell for awhile my family was like cook seafood Mommy can’t smell it…they love it).
2. People who wear waaaay too much cologne/perfume. As they say a little dab will do ya.
1. With all the farms around here the manure spreading in the fields gets overwhelming.
Top
5. Fresh flowers (outside)…I am talking lilacs the strong smelling ones and our cherry blossoms in the trees in the spring.
4. Freshly baking cookies or desserts…when weather cools kids always ask me to make my 3 ingredient pumpkin cake.
3. Bon fire/leaves burning in the fall.
2. Apple anything. Love walking into a cider mill. Can’t wait that is coming soon!
1. When my husband cooks. The main ones are his red sauce sauce for his pasta dishes, his crockpot chicken cordon bleu and pancakes.
Going to add I miss… I miss the smell of my of my Dad’s cologne when he would hug me. Ugh.. sorry not to be a downer.
Katie Compton says
Oh my goodness… Andrew’s bottom #3 is probably my bottom #1 and it made me crack up!! My family always plans ahead when we eat at Mexican restaurants… is it something that has to be dry cleaned? Nope don’t wear it! Winter coat on? Nope! Leave it in the car. I don’t even wear my Uggs into Mexican restaurants. Ha!
Paige M Wright says
This post made me laugh out loud too many times haha!! I’m with you on Diva detergent!! Your comment on your funeral😂
Heather Stanton says
I snorted and spilled my coffee at…street meat! 😂😂😂
Going to have to work those words into my day!
Beth Knecht says
Ohh the wet dog smell is just terrible! I hate that smell, especially when there are no dogs around and I still smell it! Yuck!
Nicole B says
How you feel about roses is how I feel about lilies. Love the look, but I feel like I am smack in the middle of a funeral home!
Claire says
I totally agree with you on the big city smell! I just had a baby in June, so I would add “warm baby hair” smell to the list! 🥰
Mix and Match Mama says
YESSSSSSSS!!! I need to snuggle your new baby 🙂 .
Abbey says
I’m right there with you with the Diva smell. It makes me nauseous. We finally figured out that is what was giving me headaches and making my stomach hurt when I went to my in-laws. Many people love it. I cannot stand it. I work out outside in the mornings, and even outside if someone is wearing it, I have to move to a different area. I just cannot.
Kelly Marie Sites says
Oh man I hate when my clothes smell like food of any kind. Gross. And I hate damp musty smells. Love fireplace smells, woodsy pine smells, and a spa smell at my favorite hotel in Mexico.
Debbie says
I love how you described the ocean. There are people who just don’t get the appeal of the ocean, but you described it perfectly. The smell of microwaved meat also makes me want to gag. I do like the smell of popcorn. For me, peanut butter (unless I’m currently eating it) brings me to the verge of vomit.
Mix and Match Mama says
Now peanut butter didn’t come on my radar, but I bet you’re not alone. I’m going to guess many out there feel the same way!
K.K. says
Yes, yes, yes… I thought peanut butter too!! Ugh. I don’t mind eating it, but the smell is not great.
I’m also the weird one who doesn’t like chocolate and peanut butter mixed – like Reese’s cups, which always is an unpopular opinion!
Susan Angvall says
Totally random but I love the smell of a hardware store. I think it’s the fresh cut wood but take me to Home Depot and I’m in heaven!
Susan Swiggart says
This is great! I hear ya on the city smell! My favorite candle is New York (Homesick). I love the mixture of smells in NYC so much. Coffee, steam, pollution, bread baking, pot 😳, pizza, street meat, the park, horses, ALL OF IT. 👏
Other than…Chinatown. 🤢 That is on my list of worst smells. I can’t stand the smell of raw seafood, especially at an outdoor market. Just gross.
Laci says
I love the smell of leather!! So funny what people love and hate….
Shirley says
I enjoy these lists & find them very intriguing! I would love to know what perfumes/colognes you like as I also love the smoky, woodsy smells of them on me.
Mix and Match Mama says
My favorite is Replica’s By the Fireplace!
Denise says
Andrew’s #1 FAVORITE is Gasoline 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢?????? Rational please!!
Lisa D says
My husband loves the smell of new car, and new tires
Denise says
Lol, those are totally understandable- especially the car
KC says
It’s my husband’s favorites smell too!
Leslie S says
Yes! The ocean is my favorite smell too! I also really love and coffee is a strong second. Breakfast (French toast, waffles or pancakes) with real maple syrup, the air after the rain, and anything baking round out my top 5.
I haaate the smell of Gain detergent. I just don’t get the appeal, to me it’s so strong and I just can’t stand it. Wet dog, carnations (those remind me of funerals!!), laundry scent beads of any kind (they’re just too strong for me!) and 100% agree with Andrew on the clothing smell for hours after eating at a Mexican restaurant round out my bottom 5.
Amy Heinl says
I am with you on the smell of Gain. It was #1 on my hate list. Glad to know I am not alone. Lol
Allison Ferrell says
“Curry” ☠️☠️☠️☠️
Mix and Match Mama says
He blames his time in India for an overload of it.
Rona says
I’m with you on the “Diva” laundry detergent. Barf.
MelanieL says
LOL! Smelling like the restaurant several hours later is the absolute worst!! Your top 5 are another reason we love you…this is like a book review of smells and I can’t wait to read Street Meat and Polluted Vacation Air!! I cracked up all the way through this…thanks for the laugh this morning! 🙂
Sarah M. says
I laughed at the street vendor at your funeral! Love it.
Kim says
There is a candle that bath and body works has that comes out in the winter. I can’t remember the name it’s my favorite. It smells just like my grandmothers house when I was little burning a fire in the fireplace. I think it’s marshmallow fireside. You would like it.
Deena says
I get allergy symptoms from the top 3 scents in my bottom 5 in addition to not liking the smells. You don’t eat popcorn? I love it and the smell of it in the theater even though I don’t buy it there anymore. Tell Smith to try heating up his pizza in the air fryer. It makes it nice and crispy.
Top 5:
5. popcorn
4. Coffee
3. Libraries/books
2. Onions frying
1. fresh cut grass
Bottom 5:
5. Strong garlic smell
4. Fish cooked in house (shrimp is ok)

Maureen says
I’m with you on the roses, if you add baby’s breath to the roses ..even worse. I very much dislike new car smell.
Fresh brewed coffee and the smell of the ocean are what dreams are made of , especially if I’m sipping that coffee while sitting on the beach!
K.K. says
I share so many of the top and bottom ones, though you lost me on leather… New car smell – leathery… AHHH! 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
I would argue that new car smell is its own amazing scent, right? That is not leather. Am I crazy?
hammondzoo says
I love the smell of clover. That goes along with your fresh-cut grass. And the smell of an area near a river. That cold water and green.
For my mom, lilies are the same to her as roses are to you.
Ashley Reiss says
Diva detergent scent is the worst and it’s everywhere in NOLA also. You can smell it on the streets when walking in neighborhoods. 🤢
Beth Valenta says
Oh how I love these lists! My top 5: wood burning fireplace, grill with charcoal/lighter fluid, fresh cut grass, white pumpkin candle, men’s cologne…Bottom 5: Women’s strong perfume, pot roast (gag), mulch, roses as well! My least favorite of all flowers, and anything cherry…YUK to pies, drinks, anything with cherry is gross.
Tara says
Oh I’m with Andrew! Why do I love the small of gasoline? I have since I was a kid. And diva detergent is gross to me too. LOL!
Lisa says
I hate Diva detergent, too. I have horrible allergies and it sends me over the edge AND it is huge here in Alabama, too!!
Lauren says
Do you prefer unscented laundry detergent, or do you have a different detergent brand/fragrance that you love?
Mix and Match Mama says
I actually like a nice scent, just not that one. I am obsessed with Laundry Sauce! They have a Siberian scent that I love the most!
Erika Slaughter says
GIRL…alike in SO many ways BUT our favorite smells. Street meat? GAG!!! BAHAHAHAHA! And I’m gonna add extra Diva in my next load of laundry and dedicate it to YOU! XOXO

Your replies are always my favroite! 😂

Jill says
Diva Laundry Detergent? What does it smell like? Florally? I’ve never tried that one! I DO love a freshly washed towel that doesn’t have that mildewy smell! I guess that’s why I have a variety of detergents and fabric softeners!! Here’s my link to see my favorites and not-so favorites!
https://jillonthehill.com/top-five-bottom-five-smells/
Jenny N says
I personally love Diva laundry detergent and use it daily and I agree that it makes everything smell like Diva. I can not tell you how many times my husband gets stopped by people asking what he is wearing because he smells so good. I am cracking up at your description though…..like literally rolling laughing!!
Elizabeth says

Patty says
LOVE the smell of the ocean, fresh cut wood or sawdust (reminds me of my dad who was a woodworker), babies fresh from a bath, Karl Lagerfeld mens cologne (they don’t make it anymore, but when they did, I could pick it out in a crowded elevator. It’s the only mens cologne I can stand.) And I adore the smell of pine trees lots at Christmastime!
DESPISE the smell of coffee, roses, cigarettes, cigars, and strong hairspray or perfume on older women who think more is better. (Perfume counters in department stores just about do me in.)
Jenn Workman says
I love the smell of the pages of a new book. And puppy breath!
I can’t take the smell of Goldschläger…too many shots of it in the ’90s at East Carolina University😖
Gillin Foreman says
That is how I am with Lily’s. They are so pretty to look at but smell awful and remind me of a funeral.
I also hate the smell of Lavender, it is not relaxing
Tamara R. says
I love these posts, so fun!! Ahh the ocean smell is the best! All of my life, we have rolled down the windows as soon as we get to the final bridge we drive over to get to the beach so we could take in the smell. I also love new car smell (I agree, it is not leather, what is it?). I just thought of a good idea for a topic for top/bottom five – will send it to you! Happy Monday!
Melissa says
I love how your most and least favorites really don’t have anything to do with the smell, but the memory associated with it!
Mix and Match Mama says
Great observation!!!
Stephanie S says
Favorite: the smell of walking into Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland!
Karen K Ivy says
You might be right! I’ll just say I like them both. 🙂
Ruthmary Muir says
Gotta agree about the Diva. I bought some after someone recommended. Horrid. Finally threw it out after one time use
Dawn Brunink says
I gave my bottle of Diva away after one use!!
Joanne says
Oh I had to laugh; seriously one of my best friends thinks skunks smell good so I guess we can’t ALL agree on that one (though I love to tease her that she’s nuts!). While I can not stand coffee I do love the smell of it and yes, the ocean is a great one too! Anything cinnamony/ pumpkin spice that reminds me of baking whether it’s actual baking or just a candle or made up scent is always a winner with me too.
Jodi says
Patchouli oil makes me want to vomit instantly. To me it smells dirty. When I am next to someone wearing it or walk by it takes everything in me not to make a scene gagging. It’s disgusting.
Linda says
Definitely!
Rachel says
Yes, Andrew! We have one particular Mexican restaurant in town that I don’t like going to for lunch because you will smell like it for the rest of the day and everyone around you will know where you went! If you go for dinner it’s ok because you can shower and change into your pajamas right after!
Linda says
What is Diva laundry detergent? I must be living under a rock! I am positive it would set me off.
Lauren says
Top five:
1) Fresh cut grass
2) Fresh air – Nothing like an open window.
3) Spaghetti and meatballs

Bottom five:
1) Pot. The smell just grosses me out.
2) Coffee (I don’t drink it)

4) Flowers
5) Ice-cream places (why do they always smell like garbage?)
Sharon says
Hi Shay, is there a reason you ended this post with saying this is about your top fav CEREALS? Am I the only one confused by this? This post is about scents!
Mix and Match Mama says
Because clearly my brain isn’t working. Agh! I’ll correct it! I probably had just pasted the cereal link into the post and cereal was on the brain.
Kacy M says
I HATE the smell of roses. They are pretty and I like to look at them (or receive them), but the smell makes me gag. I’m also allergic to rose products (oils, face masks, lotion, etc)…they make me itch/have redness and irritation.

Jen says
Hate the smell of roses too! One or two is okay, but never more than that.
Tell Smith to reheat the pizza in the air fryer! Much better!
Tina says
Fun Fact: Butterflies don’t like roses either.🤷🏼♀️ I got tickled after reading your blog yesterday and then learning this in my daughter’s schoolwork a couple hours later.🦋 Now you know!🙃
