Hey, hey THURSDAY!
It’s another edition of TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE!
You guys, I am really excited about this topic. I find this particular subject to be very controversial in my own home, so I imagine it will be in the comment section too.
Today, I’m sharing my TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE CONDIMENTS.
Years ago one of my teacher friends told me about a student she had whose parents just could not do anything to get his attention. They tried all sorts of consequences for bad behavior, poor grades, etc and nothing worked. One day, they told the kid that until he got his act together, he was grounded from condiments…and the kid changed his ways.
Condiments are powerful, y’all 😉 .
Okay, I think it’s time for a reminder that this post can not just be about what we like and don’t like…but (and I feel this is especially important today), it can be what you think is overrated and underrated.
Here we go…
TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE CONDIMENTS:
#5: RELISH
Yes and yes. It’s like a food that sits on top of another food. I give it points for texture (yes!), for flavor (no doubt!), for satiety…relish can make a boring ballpark hot dog something special.
#4: SRIRACHA
Put it on my eggs, on my rice, please put it on my chicken…I want it on everything. I love that the consistency is thicker than Tabasco sauce and that a little can go a long way. I like it on my avocados, my veggies…seriously, I love it on everything. I’m always disappointed when I ask a restaurant for it and they don’t keep it in stock. Sriracha please!
#3: HONEY
I’m not saying that I want it on everything, but honey is very underrated in my opinion…especially a good quality honey. It is great in marinades, a little bit in stew gives it an extra wow, it’s great mixed with the savory and of course, with the sweet. I think it pairs well in tea, in frosting, in pies, and on biscuits…please put some on my charcuterie board (extra points if it’s a hot honey!). I just really love honey.
#2: BUFFALO SAUCE
Yessssssssss. Is this similar to sriracha? No. Ha! These two condiments are both on heavy rotation in my kitchen but have different “zings”. Where sriracha makes everything a bit spicier, Buffalo sauce makes it more flavorful. I love adding some to my sandwiches, my shredded chicken…I love it in my soups too. I really adore it on my deviled eggs and especially in cheesy dips. Yes please!
#1: SPICY MUSTARD
Not just yellow mustard, I want it SPICY. I think any meat from roasts to hot dogs just tastes better with spicy mustard. I think it’s great to whisk up with oil and vinegar for a salad dressing (lovely on veggies!), it makes dips and deviled eggs better. Sandwiches? Zero flavor unless I have spicy mustard on there and it’s the easiest way to make a better burger. Hands down this is my favorite (and most underrated!) condiment. Why buy boring yellow when you can buy spicy?!
And now for my…
#5: KETCHUP
I’m not saying I dislike it. Of course not, I’m American, we put it on literally everything. I just think that it gets a whole lotta love when in reality, whatever you’re dipping into it would be better with something a little more unique. An aioli? A spicy mustard? I mean, is it really “that” good on everythinggggggg? I don’t think so. Speaking of which…
#4: BBQ SAUCE
…it’s just Ketchup’s much sweeter sister. Again, there is a time and place for it, but if I have a brisket sandwich I find it less sweet and more amazing with a spicy mustard.
#3: RANCH
I know I’m stepping on toes right now. I like ranch. In fact, I think ranch and Buffalo sauce pair well together, but I don’t think ranch deserves “the end all be all” praise it receives as a condiment. “What about dipping your raw veggies in it, Shay?”…that still tastes like a boring carrot stick to me no matter how much ranch you dunk it in. I’m unimpressed. Fine for a salad but please get it away from my fries.
#2: A1 SAUCE
I have nothing nice to say. I just DO NOT get it. At all. Like AT ALL. This is when I’d happily take that BBQ sauce instead.
#1: MAYONNAISE
If you hide it in something, I can deal with it. It’s basically like sour cream (great in dips and such to add a creaminess), but slather it on my sandwich or burger, and I will not eat it. I don’t even keep this in our house because the jar grosses me out. Have you ever looked inside a mayo jar? Gag. If I need it, I will buy a small jar, use it and toss it. The jar alone makes me nauseous.
Okay, it wouldn’t be a TOP FIVE, BOTTOM FIVE without Andrew weighing in too.
After yesterday’s marriage post, Andrew and I might have found ourselves in a pickle. We DO NOT agree!
ANDREW’S TOP FIVE CONDIMENTS:
5: BBQ SAUCE
4: AN AIOLI (Which is not “rebranded” mayonnaise, people! It’s different!)
3: SPICY MUSTARD
2: KETCHUP
1: SALSA
ANDREW’S BOTTOM FIVE CONDIMENTS:
5: MAYO (unless it’s in something)
4: TABASCO
3: RANCH
2: CURRY SAUCE
1: RELISH
Whew! Okay…

One of my favorite posts!! Thanks for sharing!
I love some ketchup for dipping!

Elizabeth says
My top 5:
1. Pesto
2. Olive oil
3. Caesar dressing
4. Olive oil
5. Honestly I can’t even think of anything else I want as an actual condiment
Bottom 5:
5. Tartar sauce
4. Pickle relish
3. Mustard
2. Miracle whip
1. Mayonnaise
Jess says
Love this! And totally with you that mayo and aioli are NOT the same, especially chipotle aioli!
On the note of honey as a condiment I’d add Vermont Maple Syrup! 😋 It goes on so much more than pancakes and a maple latte is a pretty beautiful drink.
Also I’d add Tajin. My four year old is obsessed and will not eat eggs without “sprinkles” now. 😂
Polly Pover says
Cannot stand mayonaise! Making a little from scratch is super easy if I need need it. I am gagging a little writing this! Have a spicy day, Shay!!
Erin says
Honey and BBQ sauce are the worst ever.
Toom reigns supreme. Have you had it??? I could eat it with a huge spoon. Followed closely by mayo, which is delish and always will be a must on a burger.
Allison says
Before I even opened this post, I knew mayo would be your number 1 bottom five. Is that impressive or sad? LOL!
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s a compliment 😉 .
Robin says
Whole grain mustard is my #1 underrated condiment. It’s kind of like spicy mustard but with more tang. I use it instead of mayo on a BLT!
I’m with you on the mayo jar – yuck! I have a family member who unfortunately thinks it is an acceptable condiment to eat on a sandwich and notices when I toss the jar! 😅
Like you, I can eat it if it’s mixed into something else, but only if I am not the one who makes it.
Sheaffer says
I can accept you hating mayo (although I will never understand it), but depriving your children of mayo? It’s Un-American AND I WON’T STAND FOR IT. And I’m about to send you a picture of a mustard that I LOVE from Trader Joe’s.
Mix and Match Mama says
You know, I bet my kids have never had mayo on a sandwich. Now that you are mentioning it, I better they never ever have had it. I’m actually quite proud 😉 .
Pamela Garrett says
I love horseradish sauce on everything. I also love Chick-Fil-A sauce. I also love balsamic glaze on anything. My favorite condiment tho is Jelly or Jam ❤️ I, too, am grossed out by Mayo…just thinking about it makes me feel nauseous 🤢
Kim says
Fun topic! I’m a yellow mustard girl but I could not be without my favorite salsa. I took breakfast tacos to work for lunch on Tuesday and forgot my salsa. Tragedy 😂 And I feel the same way about mayo. My first job was at a deli and I had to hold my breath to refill our mayo bottles.
Kara says
Ranch is a no for me too! Why do people dip everything in it!? I’m talking to you pizza with ranch people! Ketchup is my thing though… fish.. chicken.. burgers… can’t eat them without ketchup! I’m adding tartar sauce to my bottom 5 b/c I do NOT enjoy tartar sauce at all! haha
Sarah says
I’m from Buffalo so Blue Cheese has to be on my list! I’m confused because I thought aioli was a fancy name for mayo? lol
Mix and Match Mama says
I think it’s mayo’s way of “rebranding”. They have good PR people 😉 .
Heather Stanton says
I won’t argue….but let’s discuss mayo. Do I ever eat it on a sandwich? No, I’ll pass on a mayo slathered anything. I’m all mustard like you.
But mayo….for dips has got to be in a different category. I just made a spinach artichoke dip. Maybe we call mayo a “special exception”
😘😘😘
Mix and Match Mama says
I only consume mayo if it’s “in” something (like a dip). I would never eat a sandwich with mayo on the bread. Just typing that sentence grossed me out.
bette says
i feel condiments can either break or make a dish.
top 5
5 – pico de gallo: pairs well with any hot dish
4 – italian seasoning: makes everything tastes better, even scrambled eggs
3 – onion powder: makes everything flavorful
2 – garlic aioli: the perfect dipping sauce for fish & chips and the only sauce i put on my burger
1 – honey: love this, even in beverages, like hot black coffee
bottom 5
5 – hot sauce: any hot sauce
4 – ketchup: i’ll pass
3 – mayo: what is this exactly
2 – curry: smells like armpits
1 – mustard: no, no, and no
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank YOU for your list! I love that pico made your top 5! I laughed out loud at several of your descriptions too 😉 .
Kristin says
Shay- I’m completely on the same page! Give me all the spice and sweetness! Have you tried Mike’s Hot Honey? It’s SO good!! A new favorite on my list!
Mix and Match Mama says
I have not! Where do you find it?
Jess says
Trader Joe’s has their own hot honey as well! But usually you can find mikes hot honey at any grocery store. Even better, Spicy Maple Syrup, sooo good on an egg sandwich! 🤤
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! That’s the one I use. I LOVE it!
Jenny N says
I have never been a honey person, but I just started using Mike’s Hot Honey and it is delicious!! We went to a pizza place and they had a pizza with it drizzled on top and it was life changing! I love it drizzled on broccoli too! I got it at HEB, but any grocery store will probably carry it.
Kacey says
SOOOOO good!! It’s a crowd favorite here too!
SS says
Let me just say I am not much of a condiment person….I always say I am a purist. 😂 Not particular order….
Bottom
Salsa- haven’t had it since I was a pre teen…
Anything spicy
Mayo
Mustard
Relish
Top
Ketchup/ Marinara (I put them together since they are tomato based)
Ranch (I mean if you live up north it is a staple for everything) and not all Ranch is created equal.
A local place makes a great dipping sauce good for hamburgers to fries
Salt and Vinegar (just for my fries)
BBQ
Honorable mention a good cheese dip a local pizza place gives you marinara and cheese dip for your pizza puffs (think pizza crust dough but fluffier and bite size)
Mix and Match Mama says
Salsa at the bottom is just unheard of to this Texan 😉 .
Dawn Scheurich says
I’m just over here never using a condiment at all!! Not on a sandwich, burger, hot dog, etc—just give me it dry! Mayonnaise to me is the worst offender—gag!! Trust me when I tell you how hard it is for me to order and my husband of 40 plus years has been annoyed by me multiple times for this…
Kristen says
Hands down the worst of the worst is MAYO!!!! when people tell me they love mayo it makes me rethink what kind of person they are!!!!
best- Mustard!
Lisa D says
I think Miracle Whip is actually worse than mayo! Also gross is tartar sauce which is basically mayo with pickle relish mixed in. Yuck. Ranch dressing is gross too.
Best condiment is salsa!
Patty Anderson says
Your bottom five are my bottom five, too…I just don’t get the appeal of any of them. When we sit down at a burger place I move ketchup out of my sight. It grosses me out. And if something arrives with mayo I send it back. Gross! Of your top five, yes to a mustard sauce on pulled pork. I love Carolina mustard! And when I cook salmon, I mix stone ground mustard with brown sugar or a little syrup for a glaze and cook it in foil…so, so good! Mustard enhances so many things. You lost me on relish, though. I just don’t get it.
Linda Tonn says
Have you tried the sweet jalapeño relish by Best Maid? It’s delish with just a little kick.
Love your blog.
Nana
Mix and Match Mama says
I have!! It is so delish! Thank YOU for stopping by, Nana!! xx
Lisa N says
I just don’t even understand you😂😂 To me all the red hot sauces is all you tastes and not the meat they are on. Love a splash here and there though.
My grandkids are “dippers” so I can see the meltdown of withholding them😂😂
Love these posts!
Paige says
I’m your soul sister with the mayo…I just can’t! Even if it is accidentially put on my sandwich I can still taste it when scraped off, so gross!
mustard
relish…got to be dill
ketchup
soy sauce
ketchup again haha
Anne says
Finally someone who clarified dill relish. And sweet relish is a bottom five.
Katie Amerson says
What brand of spicy mustard do you prefer?
Mix and Match Mama says
Typically from Trader Joe’s, but I am not super picky!
Nicole Klaver says
My top faves:
1. Truffle hot sauce
2. Primal Kitchen Avocado Lime sauce/dressing
3. Hands down, best salad dressing: a great quality olive oil, balsamic vinegar and garlic salt.
4. Ithaca Everything hummus, it is the BEST.
5. Siete vegan queso, just trust. 😇
Laci says
I love condiments period!!! The more the merrier!! Love this post
Heather Stansell says
I can see you not liking mayo and I get it. I feel like it’s either love or hate with most people. What I don’t get is the RANCH!!!! OH MY GOSH I live for ranch. It is my favorite condiment. Only homemade ranch though! Anytime I go to a restaurant and they have homemade ranch (yes, I ask) I always get an extra side!!!!! The bottle stuff is gross.
Tonya says
I am with you on the mayo—I will not eat sandwiches and burgers when someone tries to sneak that on as a condiment—nasty!!
Amy T says
My Bottom Five:
1. Mayo
2. Ranch
3. Mustard
4. Aoili (because it contains mayo)
5. Sour Cream
Susan Jeffries says
The only condiment I like is honey. I consider it a food group. My husband loves all condiments especially horseradish and hot sauce. Opposites attract 🙂
K.K. says
I’ve never felt so close with you and this community in what seems to be a fairly unified front against mayo… 🙂
Julie says
This post made me laugh! Our lists are literally swapped! Your bottom is my top and vice versa!
Sara says
Ahhh this is hilarious!! Boston suburb (and ACK-loving) mom here. I’m with you on the mayo thing. Like why must it be so gloppy? Have you tried Mike’s Hot Honey? Can order on Amazon or grab at Whole Foods. If you guys are ever passing through Newton on your way to ACK, try Jinny’s Pizza. They use Mike’s Hot Honey as a crust-dipping sauce option. Jinny’s is tiny and the line is always out the door but there’s outdoor seating and you can take it to go. 🙂 Anyways, thanks for the laugh today!
Lizzie says
I’m a Miracle Whip girl. We never had mayo at home growing up. I love certain honey mustard’s, but I don’t eat plain yellow mustard on anything, unless it’s mixed in something. Same with sour cream, yuck. I know that’s not a sauce.
I like Ranch for dipping fried pickles in and Ketchup for FF.
Dislike Tartar sauce, horseradish and most other sauces. I do like sweet pickle relish in my tuna or deviled eggs that I make with Miracle Whip, of course. Lol
Marisa Patel says
HA! This is a sensitive subject in my house. First off, it is I who dislikes most condiments 🙁 I believe it starts from my dislike of vinegar (I do like pickles provided they are crunchy and not those disgusting saturated ones). I can tolerate ketchup so long as it doesn’t separate, BBQ sauce needs to be spicy, not too sweet, and I love salsa so long as it is fresh and not that gross stuff in a jar. As for mayo and mustard, they are both a great big NO for me, I will vomit if I bite into something with either of those on them. I have a lot of issues with most recipes due to my aversion to most condiments but I have learned some ways around them. The smell of the “hot sauces”, Siracha and Tobasco, is enough to send me running, so disgusting!
Faith says
Ha ha your top 5 is almost my bottom 5 and my top 5 is almost your bottom 5…..except for A1 YUCK
I do like honey on a chicken and pimento cheese sandwich and I use it it a lot in recipes.
Oh and a good honey mustard would be in my top 5….can’t be too mustardy or it’s not good!
Oh and it had to be Duke’s or JFG mayonnaise – especially on a good summer tomato sandwich! Hello south!
Cara says
I could have written the part about Mayo myself. Bleh! Unfortunately, my husband LOVES mayo so we have it in the house. I refuse to touch the jar or rinse off any of the silverware he uses in it. Same goes for sour cream. Pretty sure I have a phobia of any white, creamy condiment!
I can’t live without ketchup, though. 😉
Randi Acree says
Mayo haters unite! I’m from GA so everyone thinks I’m the weirdo but it makes me gag!
I do not eat other people’s chicken salad or tuna salad because there’s always so much mayo! I can sometimes eat it at home but I make my husband stir it!
Kacey says
I’m right there with you! Mayo – NO thank you!! Ick. Give me all of the Buffalo sauce and spicy mustard.
Alyssa says
I’m an outlier. Zero condiments for me. I have a picky palate, nor can my stomach tolerate hot things. The weird thing is that when I would ask for a hamburger plain & dry, meat and bun only, restaurants could not believe it and always added mayo. The number of burgers I have sent back = too many to count.
Melissa Donavant says
You’re cracking me up on the mayonnaise comment friend! I can eat it if it’s hidden and I mean hidden well, but just to look at the outside of the jar grosses me out – GAG…LOL!
Heather says
Ok so my husband and I have had this discussion before and for the life of me, I don’t know how we both missed honey! Most consumed condiment in our home for sure! We have honey comb at hand at all times for our charcuterie board.
Chow-chow was my number one but would be bumped to number two after honey now. Dijon mustard at 3, Texas Pete at 4 and Dukes Mayo rounds out my top 5.
Least favorites would be 1. Ranch, 2. Ketchup, 3. BBQ, 4. Polynesian 5. Garlic
Mix and Match Mama says
When I was a kid, I would get honey as my condiment to dip my McDonald’s nuggets into…it was the ’80s…clearly my parents weren’t into health at the time.
Leslie says
I did the same thing!
Amy Rae D. says
My favorite condiments: Chick Fil A sauce (love that you can get it at grocery store), honey mustard, mustard, ranch. My least favorite condiments: mayo (I really only like a little mayo on my BLT and mayo in chicken salad otherwisemayo is gross to me), and ketchup.
SC says
What a very serious topic?! LOVE!!! I am on a crunchy chili onion kick 😉
Beth Valenta says
Oh how I love these!
Top 5: sugarfree ketchup (yes it makes it better), Buttermilk Ranch, mayo on a cheeseburger and dips, dill relish (have you tried Wickles?), Malt vinegar…love it on fries. I do love dijon mustard…honorable mention.
Bottom 5: soy sauce-just gross, anything super spicy, is pesto a condiment? UGGG
sandi says
4th grade field trip to the zoo + tuna fish sandwich with mayo sitting on a warm bus = no mayo for me
If a recipe calls for mayo I am subbing plain Greek yogurt or plain coconut yogurt. My mom makes the most delicious chicken salad but she knows to not add mayo to my batch. A mashed up avocado or plain yogurt adds enough texture to hold it all together.
There are only a few condiments I like: relish, tahini, maple syrup or honey, whole grain or Dijon mustard and ketchup (sorry, it’s the only acceptable thing to dip french fries in). Avocados are in a category of their own… they are good on just about anything.
Mix and Match Mama says
GAG!!!!
Laura says
I didn’t grow up eating mayo, it was always mustard. The only sandwich I can eat mayo on is a BLT. My husband loves mayo and can eat it by the spoonful. Which I find disgusting. I thinks it’s all what you grow up with.
Shellie Boss says
Ugh sorry but I hate buffalo sauce. 🙄
Mix and Match Mama says
Well that’s just terrible to hear. 😉
Jennifer says
I haven’t seen anyone mention tartar sauce I love tartar sauce especially to dip fries and chicken fingers with!
Meghan says
Here’s the thing… I love ketchup (I won’t say it is my #1 favorite condiment, BUT I do not like American ketchup! (Yes, I am American.) Canadian ketchup is where it’s at! Same brand – Heinz – but the difference is in Canada, Heinz uses sugar, while in America, they use high fructose corn syrup. Big flavor difference!
Mix and Match Mama says
Well now I MUST try the difference!
Joanne says
Walmart sells Heinz with cane sugar. That is what I buy. Look for the Heinz bottle that has the brown stripe that says “SIMPLY no artificial sweeteners.”
Teri says
I use Heinz Simply Ketchup which has sugar and no artificial sweeteners.
Emilee says
My husband ordered us sandwiches from our local deli to celebrate our Iowa snow day. I’m enjoying my sandwich [with Mayo] while reading this and cackling. 🤣
Mix and Match Mama says
Enjoy your snow day 😉
Alison says
This is like asking me to choose a favorite child. I love them all, unequivocally. Except ketchup. Give me all the tomatoes and every byproduct of them, but do not waste them on whatever process results in ketchup.
Emily says
Saw someone recommended hot honey.. my husband loves that on pizza. Give it a try!
Stephanie Snyder says
I 100% agree with both your top and bottom lists! Perfection!
Jamie says
I have to disagree with you on Mayo!! I love Mayo! However, I do not and will not buy a jar of mayo! Only squeeze bottles! Mayo in a jar grosses me out!!
Deb says
I am with you on mayo. Other dislikes are tartar sauce and siracha. I also don’t really get the ranch craziness – I don’t dislike it but find it boring. My favs are mustard, especially sweet hot, Dijon, whole grain, spicy, and honey mustard. I also love salsa, pico de gallo, blue cheese, and balsamic glaze. Great topic!
Amy H says
I am really shocked at all the hate for mayo! It is definitely top 5 for me. Along with mustard (especially spicy and dijon), relish , hot honey and sriracha. Honorable mention goes to tartar sauce- its great with fries, scallops and fried shrimp. i also really like Trader Joe’s pepper jelly! I LOVE it on egg sandwiches now- thanks for the idea Shay!
I don’t really like ketchup that much- its good on a burger but only if the burger also has mayo and mustard on it. I never really thought about A1 as a condiment but I think thats because I don’t really like it either.
Betsy says
I’m not a mustard or mayo fan but can tolerate mustard. However, I love RANCH!!!
Kristin says
What even is mayo?! 🤮 yuck! We laugh bc my husband always says “I don’t do
Condiments” 😂 he hates them all
I’m with you on all of yours! Have you ever dipped your pizza crust in honey? Sounds weird but was introduced to this in Colorado at the famous “Beau Jo’s” and haven’t looked back. Soooo good
Katie Stewart says
Ok, since spicy mustard made your Top 5…. I have to recommend one for you to try!
In Dexter, Mo (I’m from Mo), there’s a tiny little BBQ joint called Dexter Queen. Get online, call them, something… but order their spicy mustard right now! I guarantee your friend Erika has at least heard of this place!
I have no affiliation with Dexter Queen… but you’ll thank me later! ❤️
KC says
This is so funny! Mayo is my absolute favorite condiment. I can eat it on and in anything. But it must be Dukes mayo. My husband gags when I pull it out. I buy a gallon jar from Costco and between me and the kids we go through it in no time.
Krista says
Mayo is my favorite and I can’t stand ketchup. If I’m eating ketchup you served me yucky tasting fries.
Patt says
I despise sweet relish, especially on a hotdog…I feel sick thinking about it. My favorite is horseradish sauce and salsa a close second, but buffalo sauce is nasty too, and anything you put it on tastes only like buffalo sauce.
Sarah B. says
I love any and all condiments! My mom said I was always last to eat because I had to “decorate” my food first! I greatly appreciate your Buffalo sauce on salad trick and it’s on all my salads now! 😄
Lorie says
Have you tried mayonnaise with a healthy dose of sriracha mixed in? One of our favorite burger places in Fort Worth offers it as a condiment. SO yummy!
Mix and Match Mama says
If someone handed it to me that way, I would try it, but I cannot mix it myself.
Deena says
I’m not much of a condiment person although I do like Mayo or Miracle Whip on sandwiches and turkey burgers along with dill pickles. I’m not a big fan of mustard and use it sparingly in hot dogs if I eat them and hamburgers (with dill pickles). I like honey mustard dip but don’t like barbecue sauce or relish. Yuck! Hot honey is good!
